SUMMARY

An interstellar excursion, a journey across hell and an adventure through the world of Arabian fairy tales: this evening we are inviting our audience to take a unique musical journey hand in hand with some of the finest artists in the classical music world. Martin Grubinger was born in Salzburg in 1983. His awards at international competitions quickly attracted interest around the profession, and his high level of technical preparation and musical versatility make his performances unmissable experiences. Valencia-born Gustavo Gimeno is the music director of the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. He launched his international career in 2012 as an assistant to Mariss Jansons and honed his skills alongside such outstanding conductors as Bernard Haitink and Claudio Abbado. The Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg was founded in 1933. Uniting 98 musicians from some twenty different nations, the ensemble is renowned for its elegant sound. Under Gimeno’s baton, they have worked together with luminaries of the music industry like Isabelle Faust, Diana Damrau and Emmanuel Pahud. The programme for today’s concert kicks off with the world première of Judit Varga’s (born in 1979) latest composition, stars buried deep. The work, scored for a full orchestra, was commissioned by Müpa Budapest in 2022. The composer herself acknowledges that this piece was inspired by the pandemic, and the title also refers to the victims of COVID-19. The next phase of our journey, which began at the dizzying heights of the stars, takes us into the flaming pits of hell. Born in 1979, Daníel Bjarnason is a pivotal figure in the Icelandic music world. His Inferno, a concerto for percussion and orchestra, was written for Martin Grubinger. Today’s performance will also be the work’s Hungarian première. The basic thesis of the piece is quite simple: anything at all can serve as a percussion instrument. A wine bottle, a piece of wood and a key ring in a ceramic bowl are just some of the orchestral percussion instruments employed in Bjarnason’s work. After the intermission, the second half will be spent under the spell of the world of Arab fairy tales. The Russian Post-Romantic composer Nikolai RimskyKorsakov (1844–1908) was famous for his unique talent for orchestration, and his orchestral suite Scheherazade brings to life the magical world of the Thousand and One Nights. In musical form, we will hear about the travels of Sinbad, the tricks of the Kalender Prince and the love between the young princess and the prince, before finally getting a glimpse into the turmoil of a celebration in Baghdad.
