Big Pink Volleyball Tourney Returns

THE PARTHENON The Marshall University Rec Center and Cabell-Huntington Hospital’s Pink Ribbon Fund are hosting the annual Big Pink Volleyball Tournament Oct. 29 and 30 at 2 p.m. at the Rec Center Basketball Courts.

The event will raise money for women who are uninsured or cannot afford an annual mammogram.

All matches in the tournament will be played with a

pink volleyball that is four feet in diameter. There is a $5 entry fee per player and all proceeds will go to the St. Mary’s Pink Ribbon Fund. Participants may create teams with a minimum of four participants and a maximum of 10.

In addition to the proceeds for participants to sign-up, T-shirts will be for sale to benefit the Pink Ribbon Fund.

Short sleeve shirts will be available for $10 and long sleeve shirts for $13.

“The tournament definitely raises awareness of it and gets the word out. It is a good way to get out and have people share their experiences with breast cancer and what it means to them,” said Matt Schaefer, coordinator of Competitive Sports and Camps at the Rec Center.

Justice, W.Va. Democrat candidate for governor owes millions in taxes

ASSOCIATED PRESS Jim Justice, a coal billionaire running for West Virginia governor, owes millions in back taxes to some of Appalachia's most impoverished counties, including one in Kentucky that is struggling to pay the debt on a new rec center and has turned the lights off in its parks and reduced hot meals for senior citizens, according to tax records and government officials.

Many of these counties have been devastated by the collapse of the coal industry over the past few years, and their financial struggles aren't all Justice's fault. But county officials say things would be a lot easier if he paid up.

"It's just absurd that a billionaire wouldn't pay his taxes," fellow Democrat Zach Weinberg, the top elected official in Kentucky's Knott County, said as he thumbed through a folder of Justice's debts.

Justice, who is leading in the polls, makes no apologies for the debt owed by some of his coal companies, saying he is doing everything he can to keep his businesses running and workers employed while other companies go under.

One of the biggest chunks of money owed is in Knott County, where Justice has unpaid taxes of $2.3 million dating to tax year 2014. That's a substantial hole, given the county government's $10 million budget and its separate $23 million school budget.

Justice has other unpaid tax bills scattered across the hills and hollows of eastern Kentucky: $1.2 million in Pike County, $500,000 in Floyd County, $228,300 in Magoffin County and $167,600 in Harlan County, according to county officials.

He also has millions in West Virginia state tax liens against his companies. Because of privacy laws, the state won't say whether he is paying them back.

The Associated Press has reported previously on Justice's debts to coal suppliers and contractors, and a recent National Public Radio report compiled a list of Justice company debts,

including back taxes and mine safety fines totaling $15 million.

At the same time, Justice — the richest man in West Virginia, with a fortune estimated at $1.56 billion by Forbes magazine and a profusion of coal and agricultural interests — has spent almost $2.6 million of his own money on his campaign.

His opponent, Republican Bill Cole, has made an issue of Justice's bills, saying the businessman is putting counties at risk. "They don't need the money in a year or two years from now," Cole said during a recent debate. "They need it right now."

In his defense, Justice cites the downturn in the coal industry and the complexity of the 102 businesses he is juggling.

He doesn't have "barrels of money" sitting around, he said, and his companies have paid over $70 million in taxes annually over the last four years.

Justice has cast his efforts to keep his mines open in heroic terms.

"I didn't declare bankruptcy, did I?" he said when asked about his unpaid debts at the debate. "You saw every great coal company in the world belly up. They stiffed everybody. I just kept digging. It's tough. It's really tough at times. But we didn't give up."

He added: "If we would have given up, what would have

happened? Those good people, men and women that were working, they would have gone home, they wouldn't have had their jobs. And I won't feel bad for a second for trying to keep those people in their jobs."

Justice's campaign has also emphasized his ability to pull off unthinkable economic development projects, pointing to his purchase and turnaround of the once-broke Greenbrier resort, a longtime playground in West Virginia for members of Congress and foreign dignitaries.

As recently as five years ago, Knott County had about 1,000 miners producing some 5 million tons of coal a year and could count on $8 million to $9 million a year in mining-related taxes. In those heady times, the county built a 66,000-squarefoot sports and activity center on top of a former mine.

Now, the county doesn't have a single working mine, unemployment is around 10 percent — or more than twice the national average — the mining tax revenue is down to just a few hundred thousand dollars a year, and the county still owes $6 million on the sportsplex.

"We're trying to do everything we can to keep the doors open, to provide services to keep the roads up, to keep the jail going, to keep the dogs off the road, and we just really

don't have money to do it," said Weinberg, the county's judge executive.

For 2014 and 2015, Justice owes the county $1.46 million in property and other taxes, and $915,000 in fees involving unmined minerals.

There and in other counties, Justice agreed to installment plans to pay his back taxes but then stopped making payments, officials said. Knott County sued one of Justice's businesses and set up a second plan, with the company making the first $40,000 installment in September, Weinberg said.

In the meantime, the county is trying to save money by shutting off the lights at 10 parks and substituting cheaper cold meals once a week for senior citizens who depend on food deliveries. County employees also are being asked to take on more duties.

Chris Amburgey, who runs the sportsplex, parks department and tourism office, said he worries that drug use and vandalism could increase in the darkened parks. Standing on a basketball court near a recently closed coal mine, he pointed out the nets and stripes, upgrades made before the bottom fell out.

THE PARTHENON Career Services at Marshall University’s annual Fall Etiquette Dinner will take place Wednesday.

The dinner will feature Terri Thomson, an etiquette consultant, who will offer her professional business etiquette tips for handling meal-time interviews and networking events. Thomson started the companies Etiquette in Action and Swizzle Stick Speaking, and has helped many people develop professional etiquette and personal

communication skills.

“The event is a four course meal and, through each course, Thompson will teach etiquette such as what utensils to use when, how to eat some of the food, where to place your napkin and what to do if you have to sneeze during the meal,” Jennifer Brown, a representative from Career Services, said.

There are two seating times available at two different locations for the dinner in order to accommodate more students.

The first is 4:30 p.m. in the Shawkey Room and the other

is 6:30 p.m. in room BE-5, both in the Memorial Student Center. The Shawkey Room doors open at 4 p.m. and BE5’s doors open at 6 p.m.

Debby Stoler, assistant director for Development and Outreach at Career Services, said that all Marshall students may attend, however juniors, seniors and graduate students are especially encouraged to attend. The skills they will learn at the event are skills they will need to know in the near future as they apply for internships and jobs.

Formal dress is required

to attend the event in order to properly educate during the dinner.

Brown said Career Services is a referral for places such as Hire for Attire and Dress for Success if students are in need of appropriate attire for the event.

Brown said another etiquette dinner is taking place next semester for students who miss the one in October or wish to refine their skills at the dinner table.

Want to see World Series at Thundering Herd Wrigley? It will cost thousands women's soccer in

ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO — Fans hoping to see the Cubs play in the World Series for the first time since 1945 are finding a seat could cost them more than what their grandparents paid for their houses.

The euphoria from Saturday night's victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers gave way Monday to the realization that history doesn't come cheap.

Box seats on ticket-selling sites such as StubHub were $50,000 and up, with one seller asking $100,000 for a seat and another asking for just under $1 million. But there are lots of box seat tickets in the $5,000 to $10,000 range. Tickets to just get into the park and stand behind those with actual seats were going for more than $2,200 each.

Ticket prices are up in Cleveland, too, but prices suggest Indians fans are not willing to pay nearly as much. And there are indications that Cubs fans, getting a look at what they'd pay at Wrigley versus Progressive Field, are buying two tickets: one for a plane and one for a game.

Ticket brokers were being flooded with calls from fans looking for tickets and, as of Monday, they were willing to pay as much as $12,000, said Dan Makras of Classic Tickets in Chicago. But he said prices

might climb because Cubs fans are proving to be reluctant to sell no matter how much money they're offered.

"People have waited so long for this," he said.

How long? Well, the last time the Cubs were in the World Series, a ticket in the upper grandstand was $6.

That pent-up desire might explain why more than 2.6 million people — about the population of Chicago — signed up for a drawing for a chance to buy the few thousand tickets the Cubs are now selling themselves.

Fans with more creativity than luck or money are making some unusual pitches to pry tickets from the hands of their owners.

In Southern California, Annie Coffman posted on Craigslist an offer to exchange no fewer than two tickets for a week at her ski cabin near Big Bear Lake.

"Rental for a week is about $9,000," said Coffman, who grew up near Chicago. Not only that, but her sister owns a ski cabin near Lake Tahoe and would be willing to sweeten the offer.

"If someone wants to make it a whole tour of California, we could do that," Coffman said.

Jesse Altig, a firefighter in Portland, Oregon, who grew up watching Cubs games on television with his dad in the 1980s, also took to Craigslist.

He placed an ad offering to show whoever gives him a ticket a tour that includes Mt. Hood, the coast of the Pacific Ocean and the fire station where he works.

"I am a regular guy with a family and mortgage and these prices for tickets are kind of astronomical," Altig said. "Maybe there's somebody looking for an experience versus a monetary gain."

Some Chicago fans apparently are going with Plan B and heading to Cleveland.

Cameron Popp of StubHub said a quarter of the tickets being sold on the site for Game 1 in Cleveland on Tuesday are being paid for with credit cards associated with Illinois ZIP codes. In comparison, only about 2 percent of the sales to Game 3 at Wrigley are coming from Ohio.

No wonder. Papp said the average ticket price for Game 1 is about $1,000.

Such a bargain does not tempt Tom Wilbeck of Chicago.

"Tickets to Wrigley are three times as much and I asked myself if the experience is three times as cool," said Wilbeck, 38, who is willing to go as high as $20,000 for two Chicago at-home tickets. "And the answer is yes. So many people died wishing the Cubs would win the World Series at Wrigley and you can't let this pass you by."

THE PARTHENON The Marshall University Thundering Herd women’s soccer team has one game remaining in the regular season, with a potential spot in the conference tournament still undecided. The final game is scheduled to be played Friday against the University of North Carolina at Charlotte 49ers.

“It’s win or go home at this point of the season” head coach Kevin Long said “Motivation is at an all-time high, there is nothing I can say or do that motivates them more.”

Marshall sits in a precarious position, but if the season were to end today, they would be in the eighth seed, making it to the post season tournament for the fourth consecutive year.

There also exists a scenario allowing the Thundering Herd the potential to overtake and finish in the seventh position.

The simple issue is the Thundering Herd have just one game remaining, while two opponents within striking distance in the standings have two. Two more opponents within distance of passing Marshall also have one remaining.

That leaves a grand total of six teams battling for two positions, and the top seeds of the tournament not set that should mean every conference game remaining still has massive implications.

The overriding theme for Marshall is to win, and hope they get help from other teams.

Even if Marshall still wins the match Friday, they can still be left out of post season play. Six teams have clinched tournament berths, although not a single position in the rankings is set. Depending on the weekend match results, Marshall could be as high as seven, or as low as 12 in the standings.

While the possibility of Marshall getting into the post season without a win is severely diminished, a draw would not eliminate them from contention, and a loss would not mathematically eliminate them either.

Standing in the way of the Thundering Herd will be the 49ers. The 49ers have been dominant in home games, but have struggled away from Charlotte. The road record is 2-6-1, while at home the team posted a 7-1-0 record.

In conference play, the 49ers have earned a 5-3-1 record.

Those results have already earned them a spot in the tournament, which is being played at Charlotte.

The 49ers have two standout threats for offense, Martha Thomas and Megan Greene.

Thomas leads the team in goals with 9, while Greene has 8. With those goals scored, Thomas is second overall in the conference, while Greene is tied with two other players for third. Aside from Thomas and Greene, nine other players have scored for the 49ers, compiling a team total of 35 goals this season.

While the offense has been solid for Charlotte, the weakness Marshall will need to exploit to win is Charlotte’s defensive side.

Charlotte has allowed 28 goals this season, relying on offense to win games. The 28 goals conceded are fourth most in the league, and 10 more allowed than any other team that has clinched a post season tournament position.

ASSIGNMENT EDITOR The readers submitted some questions about life, love and everything in between. I answered them as honest as I knew possible. I’m here to keep it real with you when no one else is and to answer with no judgment because I don’t know you! I’m just a college senior who enjoys giving his opinion. Here are some of the questions I got this week: If you were offered a great job, but had to drop out of school to take it, would you?

Negative. I would definitely not drop out of school, especially when I am a semester away from finishing. I’ve worked too hard to just give it up for a job; I want the degree and a job. If this were the case, I would simply have to pass on the opportunity. Also, it isn’t guaranteed that I would be with this job forever, but no one can take my degree away from me. I earned it.

Have you ever been in love? If so, what’s it like?

Yeah, the first thing that comes to my mind when trying to describe love is the end of a Lauryn Hill song. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you don’t know music. It’s like the young kids talking in the classroom. It’s magical.

Do you think animals have souls?

I mean, yeah, I guess so? I’m not really an animal guy. I’ve never really thought about this. Sure, animals have a soul.

If you could change anything in this world, what would it be?

I would change the killing of innocent black men in America.

This is one thing that has got to stop; it is something that honestly saddens my soul when I see a new hashtag has been started. I also would change the negative connotation that comes with being homosexual. Love is love, whether you’re with the same sex or not.

Mind your business and let people live.

What is your favorite non-social networking website?

I want to say Tumblr or Pinterest, but then I realize that’s social media. It’s not like Facebook or Twitter though. I believe those two to be a little different. This is actually a hard question to answer, I guess. We do so much social networking today that I realize if I’m not on some sort of social media outlet that I’m doing schoolwork or online shopping.

If you won the lottery, who would you call first? What would you do with the money?

I’m not really sure whom I would call first. It would be a toss-up between my parents or sisters. How much I won would determine what I did with the money. I would want to donate money to some sort of cancer research, probably Make-A-Wish Foundation.

I know all too well how cancer can affect a person and their family.

I would also want to donate to Students Against Destructive Decisions, this organization did so much for me when I was a teenager and I am forever thankful. I would like to donate to the School of Journalism and Mass Communications here at Marshall, if I had enough after spoiling myself like I never have before and taking care of my family.

Young voters now coming through for Hillary Clinton

By LAURIE KELLMAN and EMILY SWANSON ASSOCIATED PRESS Liane Golightly has finally decided who she’ll vote for on Election Day. Hillary Clinton is not a choice the 30-year-old Republican would have predicted, nor one that excites her. But the former supporter of Ohio Gov. John Kasich says it’s the only choice she can make.

“I kind of wish it were somebody else, somebody that I could really get behind 100 percent,” said Golightly, an educator from Monroe, Michigan. She’s voting for Clinton, she said, only because she can’t stomach “childish” Donald Trump.

Like Golightly, many young voters are coming over to Clinton in the closing stretch of the 2016 campaign, according to a new GenForward poll of Americans 18 to 30.

Driving the shift are white voters, who were divided between the two candidates just a month ago and were more likely to support GOP nominee Mitt Romney than President Barack Obama in 2012.

In the new GenForward survey, Clinton leads among all young whites 35 percent to 22 percent, and by a 2-to-1 margin among those who are likely to vote. Clinton held a consistent advantage among young AfricanAmericans, Asian-Americans and Hispanics in earlier GenForward polls, as she does in the new survey.

The new poll also suggests enthusiasm for voting has recently increased among young AfricanAmericans, 49 percent of whom say they will definitely vote in November after only 39 percent said so in September. Just over half of young whites, and about 4 in 10 Hispanics and Asian-Americans, say they will definitely vote.

GenForward is a survey of adults age 18 to 30 by the Black Youth Project at the University of Chicago with the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. The first-of-itskind poll pays special attention to the voices of young adults of color, highlighting how race and ethnicity shape the opinions of a new generation.

It’s not necessarily because they like Clinton, but is nevertheless a late sign of strength among a voting bloc that the former secretary of state has struggled to win over.

“There’s a gray area with her, where maybe she hasn’t broken any laws, but she’s always skirting the edge, it seems,” said Galen Mosher, 30, a lighting technician from Sandy, Oregon, who voted

for Clinton’s primary rival, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Mosher, who is white, said he got behind Clinton once she won the Democratic nomination, because “at least she’s a step” toward the free college tuition and higher taxes for wealthy people that Sanders had proposed.

The poll also provides evidence that Trump’s behavior toward women has hurt him among young voters, while Clinton’s characterization of a large portion of the New York billionaire’s supporters as “deplorable” did not damage her candidacy.

The GenForward survey included interviews both before and after the release of a 2005 recording on which Trump brags about sexually assaulting women. But support for Trump

didn’t shift among young voters overall or among young whites after the tape was released, suggesting the shift in young whites to Clinton came first.

All of the poll interviews, however, were conducted after the first presidential debate, when Clinton told the story of former Miss Universe Alicia Machado and Trump’s assessment of her as a “Miss Piggy” after she gained weight. Most young people across racial and ethnic lines say that Clinton’s accusations in that debate about Trump’s behavior made them less likely to support the GOP nominee.

Most young people weren’t turned off by Clinton calling some Trump supporters “deplorable” in September. Sixty-two percent of young adults, including 82

Guard seeks federal aid to soldiers told to return bonuses

ASSOCIATED PRESS Members of Congress from both parties and national veterans leaders on Monday called for federal action to absolve the debts of nearly 10,000 soldiers who have been ordered by the Pentagon to repay in enlistment bonuses a decade after they signed up to serve in Iraq and Afghanistan.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, a Republican, and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, both Californians, were among those who expressed outrage.

Maj. Gen. Matthew Beevers said the California National Guard is working with members of Congress to reintroduce legislation that, if approved and signed by the president, would order the National Guard Bureau to clear the debts of soldiers who were wrongly told they were eligible for bonuses of $15,000 or more. It’s not clear the total amount given out in bonuses, but $22 million has been recovered so far, The Los Angeles Times reported.

“This is how you destroy all faith in a Pentagon that is supposed to have your back,” Brian Duffy, head of the national service organization Veterans of Foreign Wars, said in an emailed statement. “Instead of seeking repayment, the Pentagon owes them a debt of thanks and an apology for insulting their honorable service to our nation.”

The Guard offered bonuses of $15,000 or more and student loan aid, to re-enlist at the height of the two wars in the 2000s.

The Pentagon demanded the money back after audits revealed overpayments by the California Guard under pressure to fill ranks and hit enlistment goals. If soldiers refuse, they could face interest charges, wage garnishments and tax liens, The Los Angeles Times reported .

Soldiers told the Times they feel betrayed by having to repay the money. They can apply for a federal review of their debt, but that appeals process does not guarantee it will be waived.

“Our military heroes should

not shoulder the burden of military recruiters’ faults from over a decade ago,” McCarthy said in an emailed statement. His statement said that the House would investigate the reports but spokesman Matt Sparks declined to comment on what that would entail.

Four people were convicted of fraud over the improper bonuses.

Pelosi called for a “legislative fix as soon as we gavel back into session.”

Defense Department spokesman Navy Capt. Jeff Davis encouraged service members to appeal the debt and said the department would work with the Army, National Guard Bureau and California Army National Guard to “strengthen efforts to respond to this situation.”

“We take doing right by our service members very seriously, and the senior leadership of this department is looking very closely at this matter,” Davis said.

improperly doled out to California Guard soldiers. About 9,700 current and retired soldiers received notices to repay some or all of their bonuses with more than $22 million recovered so far, the Times reported.

California Guard’s former Bonus and Incentive Manager, Army Master Sgt. Toni Jaffe, pleaded guilty to fraud for misappropriating the funds and was sentenced to 30 months in prison in 2012. Jaffe gave out $15.2 million in bonuses and loan repayments that she knew soldiers were ineligible to receive, federal prosecutors said at the time.

Three additional officers pleaded guilty to the fraud.

Additionally, Beevers said the California Guard fired one general and two colonels. The Guard punished more than 100 other soldiers following the incident; most of them are no longer in the service.

The survey was paid for by the Black Youth Project at the University of Chicago, using grants from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the Ford Foundation.

Respondents were first selected randomly using address-based sampling methods, and later interviewed online or by phone.

THE PARTHENON The Fall International Film Festival take place at the Keith Albee Performing Arts Center Oct. 27 through Oct. 30.

Starting off this year’s festival is “The Lady in the Van.” Based on a true story, the film is a comedy-drama detailing the story of Miss Shepherd, a woman who made the decision to temporarily park her van in Bennett’s London driveway, where she proceeded to live there for 15 years. What started off as a favor, became a relationship that changed both of their lives. The film is presented in English and runs an hour and 44 minutes.

“A War” is presented next in the festival. The film is about a Danish army commander in Afghanistan, Claus Pedersen, who is determined to lead his men with integrity after one of their young comrades is killed by a landmine. After an unexpected siege occurred, Pederson was called to make a life-changing decision, which leads to long-term effects for himself, his company and his family. “A War” is presented in Arabic, English, and Danish with English subtitles and runs an hour and 56 minutes.

“The Last Diamond” is a crime and drama film about Simon, who had recently been released from prison and is now on parole. Simon’s friend, Albert, lures him back to his old ways for a final hit to steal

a priceless diamond. When Simon’s plans go sour, he is faced with gangsters and ruthless killers in pursuit of the diamond as things begin to unravel. The film is presented in French with English subtitles and runs an hour 48 minutes.

“Viva” is a film about Jesus, a hairdresser, who works for a group of drag performers in Havana. Problems arise when a stranger from the crowd hits Jesus in the face during a performance. The stranger turns out to be his father, a former boxer who has not been in Jesus’ life for 15 years. The two reunite and both struggle to understand one another and each other’s expectations of the other while trying to become a family again. “Viva” is presented in Spanish with English subtitles and runs an hour and 40 minutes.

“Prescription Thugs” is a hard-hitting expose of Big Pharma and its marketing practices and impact on the staggering level of addiction to prescription drugs in North America. Director Chris Bell turns the camera on sensitive subjects when it comes to the abuse of prescription drugs.

After witnessing friends and relatives face tragedy of becoming addicted to prescription drugs, Bell set out to explore the goals of pharmaceutical companies and doctors in this ever-growing market, and raised a question: how are these employees are

any different from back-alley drug-pushers? The film is presented in English and runs an hour and 26 minutes.

A free post show discussion will take place immediately following the Saturday, Oct. 29 screening of “Prescription Thugs” at 2:45 p.m. The discussion panel includes: Huntington Mayor Steve Williams, Huntington Chief of Police, Joe Ciccarelli, physician director of the Cabell-Huntington Health Department, Dr. Michael Kilkenny, and Huntington Fire Department Chief, Jan Rader.

“Mustang” takes place in a Turkish village where five orphaned sisters cause outrage by innocently playing with a group of boys. Their actions result in living in a prisonlike atmosphere at home and dealing with the results of arranged marriages. Longing for freedom, the sisters rebel against the limitations. “Mustang” is presented in Turkish with English subtitles and runs an hour and 37 minutes.

Tickets for the Fall International Film Festival are free for full-time Marshall students with a valid student ID. Tickets may be purchased 15 minutes prior to each film at the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center.
