Herd seeks second win over Akron

THE PARTHENON A week after defeating the Morgan State Bears 62-0, Marshall looks to start their first winning streak of the season versus the Akron Zips.

The Zips come to the Joan C. Edwards Stadium with a 1-1 record after a 54-10 loss to Wisconsin last week. This will be the 13th time that Marshall and Akron have met, with Marshall leading the series 8-4.

The last time these two

teams met was 2014, with Marshall coming away with a 31-point victory. The Zips are coming off a successful 2015 campaign that saw them win a bowl game and compete for the MAC championship. They are a much different team with 15 new starters on the depth chart.

Doc Holliday knows the Zips are not a team to look over, especially with Terry Bowden coaching on the opposite sideline.

“I have great respect for

Terry and what he has done for that program,” Holliday said. “They were one of the worst programs in football and he has them winning bowl games. They will be well coached, they will tackle well, they will execute the fundamentals. Wherever Terry goes, he finds success.”

Holliday is much more worried about defensive lineman Jamal Marcus on the field.

“He is fun to watch play against other people,” Holliday said. “I don’t know

how fun it will be to see him against us. You always need to know where he is on the field, and it is going to be up to our offensive line to handle him effectively.”

Marcus is a transfer from Ohio State University, who was named 3rd team All-MAC and racked up 30 tackles, 5.5 sacks and 10 hurries. He also contributed to the Akron defensive front, which ranked number 3 in the nation.

Marshall is coming off of a dominating shutout

performance versus Morgan State that saw the offense gain over 500 total yards and the defense force four turnovers. The early blowout allowed Marshall to give their starters some rest, and young players some work, but starting quarterback Chase Litton also sees other advantages to the limited time the starters had on the field.

of them,” Litton said. “We have a lot to improve on from our first game in every aspect. Every day this week Akron is going to be on our mind, every practice, Akron, every film session, Akron.

We expect a lot from this Akron team, they are very disciplined and have a great coordinator. Their defensive ends really stand out on tape, they are animals and they like to pressure guys like me.

Herd4Christ kicks off new semester with events THE PARTHENON Herd4Christ is one of the many religious organizations on Marshall University’s campus, but leaders of this group distinguish it from the others by planning more than just weekly congregations.

Chris Roberts, who has been a minister at the 26th Street Church of Christ for about eight years, said one of his weekly responsibilities is to be at the Memorial Student Center Starbucks at 9 a.m. every Wednesday to provide “Coffee with Chris,” where students have the opportunity to meet with Roberts and pray or talk about their lives.

“College is a crucial time for people spiritually,” Roberts said. “We want to be there for folks as they might be questioning their faith and to be there to hopefully

strengthen that faith.”

In addition to “Coffee with Chris,” members of Herd4Christ participate in church services on Sundays, monthly service projects both on and off campus and Herd4Christ classes.

Classes are typically divided into age groups, one of which is specifically for college students. Travis Huffman, a Marshall graduate who has participated in Herd4Christ since 2010, said the group is how he met many of his friends.

“It’s a good group of kids where we have similar interests, similar backgrounds, the same beliefs and the same attitudes,” Huffman said. “Not only does it give you an added spiritual aspect, it gives you a solid group of friends that you don’t have to work really hard to get. It gives you a sense of family on campus.”

Aside from service projects, which Roberts said include volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, children’s homes, a clothing giveaway and a “parents’ day out,” where volunteers watch children, Herd4Christ members also meet for more relaxing activities, like a dinner and movie night at Roberts’s house.

Roberts also said Friday devotionals occur at 6 p.m. in various locations and consist of singing, prayer and a “fun activity,” like miniature golf or a scavenger hunt.

“The group’s goal, and my goal as well, is to spread the gospel of Christ and good news about Jesus, so we would like for as many folks to know about that as possible and have their lives changed by it,” Roberts said.

A regional infertility treatment center is seeking women 20-32 years old willing to donate their eggs anonymously to infertile couples. Treatment involves an approximate 10-20 day course of daily injections, followed by an outpatient egg retrieval procedure done under intravenous sedation. Donors who are accepted and complete a treatment cycle will be paid $2,000.

Trump signed improper charity check supporting Florida AG

ASSOCIATED PRESS Donald Trump's signature, an unmistakable if nearly illegible series of bold vertical flourishes, was scrawled on the improper $25,000 check sent from his personal foundation to a political committee supporting Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi.

Charities are barred from engaging in political activities, and the Republican presidential nominee's campaign has contended for weeks that the 2013 check from the Donald J. Trump Foundation was mistakenly issued following a

series of clerical errors. Trump had intended to use personal funds to support Bondi's reelection, his campaign said.

So, why didn't Trump catch the purported goof himself when he signed the foundation check?

Trump lawyer Alan Garten offered new details about the transaction to The Associated Press on Thursday, after a copy of the Sept. 9, 2013, check was released by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.

Team receives funds for addiction research Student THE PARTHENON Opioid addiction is becoming a larger and larger problem throughout Appalachia. Steps are being taken to combat this through a project

by The Pediatric Research Subgroup of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Region III Opioid Overdose Prevention Collaborative.

SAMHSA was approved for an award of $15,000 by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute for their project, which will focus on “engaging community partners to decrease addiction.”

“The purpose is to bring together different people in the community, health

professionals, young people and families to take a look at the problem of pediatric substance abuse issues,” said Jo Dee Gottlieb, a member of the Research Leadership Team undergoing the project and director of Marshall University’s undergraduate social work program.

Gottlieb said the goal of this group is to find out what exactly to research in order to find an effective approach to stop drug abuse and, as more is learned on how to combat it, then the group will apply for more awards in order to implement their findings.

Gottlieb said most of the region’s social workers see the effects of drug addiction daily in their practice, with it reaching up to almost 90 percent of their caseload. She said she is passionate about the research project because the more they understand, the more they can help those people that they interact with in the field.

Gottlieb said it is an honor to represent not only the school of medicine and pharmacy, but also Marshall on this research team. She said the research team is doing great things to combat substance abuse in the community.

THE PARTHENON Chen Changqi is an INTO student from China at Marshall University majoring in computer science. Changqi came to America in Aug. 2015 to attend Marshall.

Changqi was given a list of states and schools when he was trying to decide where he wanted to go in America, and he had some specific qualities he was looking for when making his choice.

“I decided to go to Marshall because my agent gave me a list of schools in America and showed me the crime rate for each school,” Changqi said.

“And West Virginia has the lowest crime rate, so I chose West Virginia and then I looked at the schools, and Marshall had a high probability of letting me in.”

While Changqi said there are a lot of differences between China and America, he said the first major change he noticed was positive.

“The Wi-Fi. The first night I stayed at the Dallas airport, I stayed all night and the Wi-Fi speeds are much faster

than in China,” Changqi said. “That was the first major difference between America and China that I noticed.”

After Changqi arrived in America, he said he only found more things he liked about the campus and Marshall itself.

“My favorite parts about Marshall are my girlfriend, Hannah, the gym and I really like how small the cam-

pus is,” Changqi said. “In China I had to ride the bus everywhere, but here I can just walk.”

Changqi said he has also started participating in more hobbies and clubs since he arrived at Marshall.

“I like coding, walking and I go to the gym and play basketball sometimes,” Changqi said. “I just joined the Thundering Nerds math club this semester.”

Changqi said he hopes to stay in America after graduation.

“I want to get a job in computer science somewhere on the East Coast, whether it be Washington, Boston or New York.”

LIFE! EDITOR Let me preface this by saying that I have absolutely no connection to the world of sports. I played little league soccer, football and baseball, but really just warmed the bench for the majority of the time, with the exception of a homerun that resulted in a gnarly injury, but that’s a story for a different time.

There is one name I keep seeing despite not following ESPN or Sports Illustrated on Twitter and Facebook, and that name belongs to San Francisco 49’ers, Colin Kaepernick.

Kaepernick started sitting during the national anthem during the NFL pre-season instead of standing with his other 49’ers to protest an almost systematic killing of African American men and women in the United States. It wasn’t too long before fellow NFL players joined Kaepernick in this silent and peaceful protest. Players from the Seahawks linked arms in solidarity, players from the Dolphins are taking knees, players from the Rams and other teams are raising their fists in the air, a move more commonly associated with the black power movement. Players are increasingly ready to acknowledge that there is a severe issue in America.

These men make stacks and stacks of money and are now using their influence and position to shed light on an atrocity. I can’t bring myself to understand the hate towards these, usually, black men.

It’s no surprise that people are pissed off, but is this anger misguided?

I would venture to say yes. Jesus Christ, yes.

People want to act like Kaepernick is solely responsible for

mass genocide and let me tell you, that certainly is not the way to go.

Is this because Kaepernick and others are disrupting the status quo of the NFL? In a league filled with men who are committing crimes like rape, murder and theft, why does everyone want to talk about these men? Robert Rozier played for the St. Louis Cardinals and admitted to killing seven white people and offering their body parts to appease a cult leader, but you guys are upset over a small, silent disruption.

I’m left wondering if people are mad just because they’re a different color, which I’m sure has something to do with it to a small degree. I believe a lot of these stuffy white men are viewing these smart, politically and socially conscious black men as threats.

Not to mention, there is no law, or decree that states that you must stand for the national anthem. It’s nowhere. Please, find it.

I am waiting.

America is no stranger to fighting for what’s right and aligns with the general idea of justice, so why is it that these people can’t fight their battle and try to make a difference? Threats of violence are just propagating the completely wrong message. Men and women died violently to preserve the right to both stand and show adoration for the country, or sit and make a statement.

Say what you want about Kaepernick and his peers, but they are getting you to talk about them, which in turn, sparks more conversation about the issue. Like it or not, Kaepernick and other men are getting you to think about things that you wouldn’t have otherwise thought about, sitting in your LAY-Z boy, eating chips, drinking light beer, not standing for the national anthem at all and cheering on people who have done much, much worse.

Dear (Students): I just read (the) article about sexual assault in the Parthenon and wanted to make a statement. I did not recall saying that I did not care to comment. Quite the contrary, I do want to comment.

Sexual assault is a very serious problem on college campuses. I want to go on record as saying that I personally abhor the action of sexual assault or domestic/partner violence. It is my goal to have a zero tolerance for sexual assault at Marshall.

I have instructed the staff in the Office of Student Conduct within Student Affairs to do a thorough review and revision of our conduct policies and procedures so that we will protect the rights of our students and be fair in making decisions about possible sanctions. The revisions are about to be finalized, and I want to thank all of those who have participated in it.

The university investigation of possible sexual assault and rape is a very serious process. The university investigation is separate from the criminal investigation in cases of rape and sexual assault. Many times information about what has happened cannot be released because it is critical to the investigation that the information remain confidential until the time of possible criminal prosecution. The lack of information from the

university about the proceedings of the university investigation should not be interpreted as hesitation on the part of the university to properly follow our processes or to not actively attempt to achieve justice. Also, the process is sometimes slow and it cannot be hurried or we will end up with problems in the process that will prevent us from having the proper end result.

I have spoken with Vice President Cedric Gathings and Women’s Center Director Leah Tolliver about bringing additional training to raise awareness about sexual assault. We are considering several campus initiatives such as the Green Dot program to train individuals and raise campus awareness about the seriousness of sexual assault. I want all of our students to know about consent and what constitutes proper consent when sex enters into a relationship. Marshall to honor new Hall of Fame Class

THE PARTHENON Marshall University will hold its annual Hall of Fame Banquet Friday, where nine former Marshall athletes will be inducted into the Hall of Fame for 2016.

The banquet is at 7 p.m. in the Don Morris room of the Memorial Student Center. Tickets are $45 each and can be purchased at the Marshall Ticket Office in the lobby of the Cam Henderson Center. All current Marshall Athletics Hall of Fame members can attend for free.

This year’s inductees include Bob Barnett, Melvin Cunningham, Dani Derricott, Courtney Driscoll (deceased), Lynn Kochendorfer, Catie Knable, Jeanne Noble Lunsford, John Spellacy and Bill Yanossy. Inductees will be showcased in the new Chad Pennington Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame, located at the Chris Cline Athletic Complex next to the Joan C. Edwards Stadium.

Inductees will be attending the M Club tailgate on Saturday before Marshall takes on Akron, and will also be honored on the field during a pregame ceremony.

Induction into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame is

considered by Marshall Athletics as the highest honor a former athlete can receive. Inductees have to meet multiple requirements before becoming eligible for the Marshall Hall of Fame, which include graduating at least 10 years prior to induction, two or more earned letters in a single sport or at least one letter earned in multiple sports, good standing with the university and exhibition of good citizenship after leaving the university.

Once an athlete becomes eligible for the hall of fame, their name is placed on a list with the other eligible athletes. Each year, in January, the Marshall University Athletic Hall of Fame Committee meets and spends months deliberating until deciding on the year’s inductees.

“It is a lengthy process and is not taken lightly or without a lot of information and discussion,” said Linda Holmes, Chairwoman of the Marshall University Athletic Hall of Fame Committee. “This is the most prestigious honor that a former athlete can receive. What it does is keep these former athletes currently engaged with the athletic department and Marshall University.”

One of the guys that Litton will be relying on to keep him upright all game is offensive lineman Clint Van Horn, who will be going head to head with Jamal Marcus.

“Those ends are all conference types, Marcus is extremely fast and active with his rush,” Van Horn said. “He is

twitchy and plays well against the run, it is hard just to get your hands on him, overall he is just a dangerous player.”

Van Horn said Akron also has Se’von Pittman, who they saw two years ago and has only gotten bigger and better since 2014.

“I have played a lot of great defensive ends, though,” Van Horn said. “My freshmen year I was going up against Vinny

Curry, who is probably the best I’ve ever seen. I’m not worried about Akron, but I respect them and know I need to bring my A game against them.”

Marshall and Akron will meet at 12 a.m. this Saturday at the Joan C. Edwards Stadium.

Garten said the series of errors began after Trump instructed his staff to cut a $25,000 check to the political committee supporting Bondi, called And Justice for All. Someone in Trump’s accounting department then consulted a master list of charitable organizations maintained by the IRS and saw a Utah charity by the same name that provides legal aid to the poor. According to Garten, that person, whom he declined to identify by name, then independently decided that the check should come from the Trump Foundation account rather than Trump’s personal funds.

The check was then printed and returned for Trump’s signature. After it was signed, Garten said, Trump’s office staff mailed the check to its intended recipient in Florida, rather than to the charity in Utah.

Emails released by Bondi’s office show her staff was first contacted at the end of August by a reporter for The Orlando Sentinel asking about the Trump University lawsuit in New York.

Trump’s Sept. 9 check is dated four days before the newspaper printed a story quoting Bondi’s spokeswoman saying her office was reviewing Schneiderman’s suit, but four days before the pro-Bondi political committee

reports receiving the check in the mail.

Compounding the confusion, the following year on its 2013 tax forms the Trump Foundation reported making a donation to a Kansas charity called Justice for All. Garten said that was another accounting error, rather than an attempt to obscure the improper donation to the political group.

In March, The Washington Post first revealed that that the donation to the pro-Bondi group had been misreported on the Trump Foundation’s 2013 tax forms. The following day, records show Trump signed an IRS form disclosing the error and paying a $2,500 fine.

Bondi has endorsed Trump’s presidential bid and has campaigned with him this year.

She has said the timing of Trump’s donation was coincidental and that she wasn’t personally aware of the consumer complaints her office had received about Trump University and the Trump Institute, a separate Florida business that paid Trump a licensing fee and a cut of the profits to use his name and curriculum.

Neither company was still offering seminars by the time Bondi took office in 2011, though dissatisfied former customers were still seeking promised refunds.

The 2013 donation to Bondi’s political group has garnered intense scrutiny because her office was at the time fielding media questions about whether she would follow the lead of Schneiderman, who had then filed a lawsuit against Trump University and Trump Institute.

Scores of former students say they were scammed by Trump’s namesake get-rich-quick seminars in real estate.

Bondi, whom the AP reported in June personally solicited the $25,000 check from Trump, took no action. Both Bondi and Trump say their conversation had nothing to do with the Trump University litigation, though neither has answered questions about what they did discuss or provided the exact date the conversation occurred.

House Democrats called earlier this week for a federal criminal investigation into the donation, suggesting Trump was trying to bribe Bondi with the charity check. Schneiderman, a Democrat, said he was already investigating to determine whether Trump’s charity broke state laws.
