Gilbert ‘honored’ to be installed

THE PARTHENON Wearing full regalia and a smile, a Mississippi native walked up the green carpet and took a seat among attendees of Thursday’s Investiture ceremony.

He answers to “Dr. Gilbert”, “Jerry” and “Pop” — from his granddaughter, Eliza. Thursday, he added “President” to that list.

Jerome A. “Jerry” Gilbert was officially installed as Marshall University’s 37th president with a grand investiture ceremony Thursday in front of the John Marshall statue by Drinko Library.

Individuals representing all facets of Marshall University and West Virginia, from Governor Earl Ray Tomblin to Student Body President Matt Jarvis, formally welcomed President Gilbert to the Marshall family. They shared their admiration of his commitment to students, his drive to see others succeed and his devotion to the Marshall community.

Jarvis told Gilbert, “You put us first, you engage with us, and, most importantly, you love us. I speak for all sons and daughters when I say this — thank you.”

“This is a great day for West Virginia and for Marshall University,” said Dr. Paul Hill, the Chancellor of the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission. “I can feel the excitement here, and the shared sense of purpose between the faculty, staff and students.”

of Agriculture and Life Science of Mississippi State, Dr. William Fox, and the Mississippi State President, Dr. Mark Keenum, showered praise on Gilbert as their friend and as a leader. Both men travelled from Mississippi to West Virginia for the ceremony.

Dr. Fox said, “When I crossed the Big Sandy River yesterday, I said ‘Mary, we’re in the Promised Land!’”

Fox continued, telling the audience he could speak all day about the merits of Jerry Gilbert, but condensed them into three four-letter words — love, work and fair. He commended Gilbert’s outward focus towards others and his respect for tradition.

“Today I have heard about so many accolades about Jerry,” Fox said. “And I can tell you now, they’re all true.”

Dr. Keenum said, “It’s an honor for me to be here and be a part of this ceremony.

He’s a remarkable individual.

He’s someone who gets it.”

Keenum and Fox thanked Gilbert for allowing them to take part in “his special day” and wished the Gilbert family the best as they embarked on their new journey in Huntington.

Governor Tomblin, Chancellor Hill and Board of Governors Chairman Wyatt Scaggs installed Gilbert into office with an oath, with which Gilbert promised to uphold the constitutions of the United States, West Virginia and Marshall University.

When the men exchanged handshakes and hugs, the

audience rose to their feet and applauded their new president.

Newly sworn in, President Gilbert began his Investiture Address by graciously thanking members of state legislature, his colleges, his friends and his family. He named and thanked several important people in his life, including his “inspirational” 94-year-old mother Elizabeth.

His immense respect for tradition was apparent as he spoke on the legacy and namesake of Marshall.

“I requested this ceremony to be held as close as possible to the birthday of John Marshall,” Gilbert said. “I wanted this event to honor him and his legacy for the university.”

The rest of Gilbert’s address focused on his desire to see Marshall succeed.

He said he wants to use the great history of Marshall to carry on the “tradition of striving for excellence.”

His commitment to students was evident as he named various goals and paths he plans to pursue for their achievement. He wants the university’s students to be “leaders of the 21st century.”

“I am convinced the future of Marshall will be a bright one, despite the challenges presented to us,” Gilbert said.

Gilbert acknowledged the significance of his positon in the university community.

Marshall professor Phone charging stations added receives grant from NASA in Joan C. Edwards Stadium due to the extensive training they have to undergo prior to space travel, so their bodies aren’t in the prime condition to recover like they would be if they were in their mid 20’s.

Toma is also taking the sex of the subject into account while doing the experiments.

Toma seeks to find ways to counteract these effects through the NASA grant. Some of the experiments she is trying places rats in a zero gravity state through a special type of suspension harness. The harness holds the rats in the air and keeps their limbs from moving with their head down to simulate the type of blood flow an astronaut would have in space.

She is experimenting to see if continuous stretching of the leg muscles of the rat throughout the zero gravity state will cause the leg muscles to not deteriorate as much. This research will help to see if stretching would be a good countermeasure to fight muscle weakness.

Toma said any of the research she finds can be related to everyone’s life. Muscle deterioration effects almost everyone as they get older and she said her research may help in the fight to combat that as well.

Study Abroad: A Life Changing Experience

THE PARTHENON The Study Abroad Fair informed students about the options available to them to go to different countries, experience different cultures and learn different languages Thursday.

Freshman biology pre-medicine major Delaney Ellis, one of the students who attended the fair, said she is looking to go to Ecuador in the summer of 2017. She said this study abroad opportunity seemed to relate the most to her major, in addition to practicing her Spanish.

“It’s a whole different thing; you can’t get here what you can get somewhere over there,” Ellis said. “Being able to immerse in another culture, I can definitely stay away from home, especially if I was doing something I am so passionate about.”

Marshall University offers faculty-led programs, like Kentucky Institute for International Studies, to teach students about ways they can adapt in new and different cultures.

Director of the Chile program, Shawn Schulenberg, recruits students for study abroad opportunities in Chile, decides where the students will stay and what excursions they will partake in.

“For students who are afraid of leaving for too long, by the time they get over their homesickness they’ll be sent home,” Schulenberg said.

Senior print journalism major Caitlin Fowlkes studied abroad through Marshall in Cambridge, England at Anglia Ruskin University for three months. She said it was a lot to do in terms of figuring out the process of going to another country, but it was a life changing experience.

“The experience of being able to live in a different culture showed me a different perspective on things,” Fowlkes said. “When I get out of school, I want to travel internationally, so it was really cool to get to see so many different European cultures.”

Students who want to study abroad are required to have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA and have completed their freshman year.

Students can also choose to take courses in their major or fill up their elective hours in the span of their study abroad experience.

Scholarships and funding are also available for students to apply.

THE PARTHENON Marshall University and technology company, Brightbox Inc., teamed up over the football offseason to bring secure phone charging stations to Joan C. Edwards Stadium.

Before the 2016 football season, Brightbox Inc. installed five charging stations throughout different parts of the stadium.

The charging stations are located in the concourse next to the entrance of sections 102104, 112-114, 117-119 and second level deck 205. The charging stations allow fans and stadium employees to use a small phone charging locker, in which they can securely charge their phones for as long as desired.

A credit card is required to

access the locker, however, the card acts as a key and users’ bank accounts will not be charged. Unlike other public charging stations, these allow users to secure their phone in a locker and leave it unattended.

“It’s a Linux-based platform and we’ve written all the software ourselves,” said Billy Gridley, chief executive officer of Brightbox Inc. “We know exactly what’s going on in a unit at any given time. If you lose your key (credit card), you can call Brightbox, identify yourself, and we can open it remotely from our software platform.”

The charging stations are technologically secure, as well, meaning the contents of connected devices are protected.

Each unit includes six separate lockers. The lockers include charging cables

compatible with iPhones 3-6, Motorola, Samsung, Blackberry and numerous other models. A USB-C cable is available, as well.

Marshall is planning to have three more identical charging stations installed in the Henderson Center before the coming basketball season.

Brightbox Inc. planned and installed the charging stations in conjunction with Marshall Athletics. Brightbox has installed charging stations at multiple professional sporting venues such as AT&T Stadium (Dallas Cowboys), Chase Field (Arizona Diamondbacks) and American Airlines Center (Dallas Mavericks). Brightbox worked with American Airlines to bring charging stations to the 2016 Rio Olympics, as well.

Though Brightbox partners

with a variety of professional sports stadiums, the company has only worked with fifteen other university properties.

The partnerships are not official, so the names of the universities, besides Central Michigan University, are not yet available to the public.

Marshall is one of the first college football stadiums to install phone charging lockers.

“The point of this is to put your phone in there for an hour or a half hour and go do what you need to do, then pick it up,” said Gridley. “It’s a whole phenomenon of what they call the ‘second screen’. Your phone is the second screen and the first screen is the game you’re at and watching.”

Spanish Club comes to Marshall

THE PARTHENON Marshall University has not had a Spanish club in over 6 years, but a few Spanish students have taken the initiative to start one again.

The Modern Languages Department of Marshall University is home to numerous clubs that coincide with the official languages of their department. The president of the Spanish club, Catherine Wippel, said she felt like the Spanish department was being left out.

“We decided to start a Spanish club because we feel like there are a lot of Spanish speakers and a lot of students studying Spanish on campus who don’t have a way to get in contact with each other and we also want to bring in more cultural ideas and social connections,” Wippel said.

The first club meeting began with assigning officers for the positions of president, vice president, secretary and

treasurer. The rest of the meeting became a brainstorming of ideas for events and activities for the club to take part in.

The club decided one of the most important aspects of the club should be about communicating in Spanish, speaking Spanish during meetings and making connections with fluent speakers to give them more real life experience.

“We just want to talk,” said Vice President Taylor Stewart.

“Honestly, if all of us could just speak in Spanish and immerse ourselves in the culture that would be more than we need.”

Members expressed a desire to have “cooking parties,” where the club would get together and teach each other how to make new foods from Spanish cultures. They also decided to make a session about Hispanic dances and the cultures behind them.

“We realized we are novices and we are almost finished with the Spanish program,” said Treasurer Delana Price.

According to these students, the university has not has a Spanish club in over 6 years.

“And we just thought it was a shame being juniors and seniors that we don’t know enough about the culture or the language.”

The club will offer an opportunity to study with fellow Spanish students by forming study groups consisting of

upper level and new students.

Meetings for the Spanish club will start on Mondays at 5 p.m. and Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. in the Memorial Student Center.

THE PARTHENON A Marshall University professor received a $15,381 grant from NASA to study microgravity and how astronauts can avoid muscle decay from being in space.

Kumika Toma is an assistant professor and the undergraduate exercise program director at Marshall. She explained that when astronauts go out into orbit, they experience microgravity, and while floating in their spaceships and space stations, the body requires a lot less energy than when they were on Earth because their muscles don’t have to fight off gravity.

The human body is an extremely efficient system and will only use the muscles that it needs to. The muscles that are needed for standing up, having good posture and walking will deteriorate in space as they are not being used because the microgravity takes care of those things for the astronauts.

Toma said this can cause problems for astronauts when they come back from space, as the recovery process to get their muscles up to tip top shape again is long and strenuous. The problem is even more exaggerated by the fact that most astronauts are in their late 30’s and 40’s

Thundering Herd football hopes to bounce back against No.3 Louisville

Louisville has lost the last four meetings against Marshall, with the Herd last playing the Cardinals in 2011, walking away with a 17-13 victory. The Cardinal last beat the Thundering Herd in 1981.

Herd sophomore quarterback Chase Litton will play a key role Saturday night.

Litton will need to clean up his game, coming off a four turnover outing against Akron last weekend.

“We just need to execute and focus on Louisville,” said Litton. “I had 4 turnovers by myself against Akron, but that was Akron, this week is Louisville. We are going to head into the game confident and play the best in the country on a national stage. We need to get first downs and stay on the field, we need to execute better on 2nd and 3rd down and keep their offense off the field.”

We were sick to our stomachs watching our tape against Akron and we are ready to work all week in practice and take them on. Their wideouts are long and fast so we need to have good technique and be disciplined with our eyes.”

Head coach Doc Holliday stressed the importance of putting last week in the past, in an effort to focus solely on the Cardinals high-powered offense.

“We have to get better as a football team this week because we have a great challenge coming here,” said Holliday.

“As long as I've coached the sport I'm not sure I have ever seen a quarterback that can take over a game like Lamar Jackson.

I have never seen a guy just run away from defenders like he did against Florida State. We have to have a great week of preparation and the good thing is we play them here so I know our guys will be excited.

I don’t think the loss to Akron helped us, I believe you learn by winning games.”

The game is widely expected to set attendance records for the Joan C. Edwards Stadium, which has a capacity of around 38,000 seats. According to the Marshall Ticket Office official Twitter account, nearly 40,000 people are expected to attend.

Marshall has not played a top-10 nationally ranked team since 2011, when number three West Virginia University travelled to Huntington.

THE PARTHENON Following a disappointing 65-38 loss to the Akron Zips, the Marshall University football team looks to pull off a potential upset of the year against the Louisville Cardinals this Saturday night.

Louisville rose to number three in the nation in the latest AP Poll after dismantling then number two-ranked Florida State last week, 63-20. The Cardinals currently sit at 5 to 1 odds to win the national title. 19-year-old quarterback Lamar Jackson also heads to Huntington as the early leader in this season’s Heisman Trophy race.

Even with his immense talent, Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino isn't writing the Herd off just yet. Petrino was last at Marshall University in 1987, the raucous crowd leaving a lasting impression.

Column: Race still matters

MARSHALL UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT As recent events in Baton Rouge, Minneapolis and Dallas have shown, race still matters in our country. We do not live in a post-racial society. We are still striving for a time where people will “not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character,” as Dr. Martin Luther King imagined more than 50 years ago.

I grew up in the deep South in the days of Jim Crow laws and to be sure, American society has moved the needle toward equality. But we still have a ways to go. Regrettably, there are those in our society who still use race as a divisive and discriminatory tool. At one time in our nation’s history it was mainly African Americans who were the victims of racial discrimination. Although the intensity of discrimination may have diminished today, the net has unfortunately gotten wider and more people of color are being singled out. The divide seems to be growing.

In a speech at a recent Huntington Regional Chamber of Commerce dinner, national political commentator Chris Stirewalt spoke of the political divisiveness and rancor that exists in our country today. Although he was not specifically addressing race, the proposed solution he suggested for ending many of the ills we see in American society is the same solution that will work to finally move us past race. He had a simple, yet powerful, solution and it was one word: “Love.”

His message touched a number of people in the audience that evening. It affirmed what we know at our core.

We need to begin treating one another with more respect and truly demonstrate brotherly love. We need to take ownership and start being more involved in all society’s institutions. Mr. Stirewalt’s message made it clear what we need to do.

In West Virginia, in Charleston, in Huntington, and at Marshall University, we all must be resolved to be steadfast in our commitment to fight discrimination and to teach respect by proper example. As the students of Marshall return this fall, we will continue to find ways to engage them in service to our local community as part of their education. We will encourage them to seek out and become friends with classmates from different backgrounds, of different races and of different creeds.

Through their service, education and the experiences they have at Marshall, I hope they will realize we all have more commonalities than differences, and that race and other attributes do not matter when you are dealing with human beings. The solution is, indeed, love. It’s that simple.

In our journey to a more civil and equitable community of mankind, we all need to remember these additional words of Dr. King: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

THE PARTHENON Matt Jarvis is the new elected president for the Student Government Association. He is a finance and economics major and musical enthusiast who was born and raised in Nitro, West Virginia.

While attending Nitro High School, Jarvis participated in cross country running and developed his love for classical music and the performing arts.

“I love classical music because of the depth and emotion any particular song evokes,” Jarvis said. “My favorite song to sing is Mendelssohn’s “It Is Enough” from “Elijah.” I can sing in a different language and still feel the emotions portrayed in the song. I love classical music because of the substance.”

Upon graduation, Jarvis said he planned on attending the University of Dayton and was enrolled to be a performing arts major. His

plans changed when he spent a weekend with his brother in Huntington, who was a student at Marshall University.

After his visit, Jarvis said he fell in love with Marshall and made a last minute decision to enroll. Jarvis said he trusted his instincts, but at first he wasn’t so sure he had made the best decision.

“My entire first semester I hated Marshall,” he said. “I simply didn’t want to be here. I thought once I made my decision to enroll that I’d like it when I got here, but that wasn’t the case.”

Jarvis got involved with SGA early in college, but said he would attend meetings and go out to dinner with his peers, then immediately go back to his dorm. He said he decided to further extend his involvement on campus by joining Kappa Alpha Psi and Kappa Alpha Order, but he said at first he was hesitant.

“Being openly gay, I thought I wouldn’t be allowed to join for some reason or be accepted, but took initiative and started to hang out with the other members of the fraternity,” Jarvis said. “They couldn’t have been a better group of guys and welcomed me with open arms.”

Being more involved with campus and the community, Jarvis began to change his perception about Marshall and what it had to offer. But it wasn’t until the fountain ceremony that Jarvis was completely sold that he had made the best decision ever by enrolling in Marshall University.

“The fountain ceremony was the nail in the coffin for me,” Jarvis said. “Attending this event made me realize how special this university truly is. Feeling that sense of community, that love and warmth based around such an unfortunate event that the plane crash of 1970 was, this university embraced it, grew from it and didn’t let that define them, but allowed it to be the foundation for growth and improvement.”

Before being elected president of SGA, Jarvis, along with current vice president Emily Kinner, discussed the unique aspects of Marshall that makes it what it is and how to ensure all students attending the university feel the same love they do.

“We wanted to give students the same experience we’ve had, unfortunately that is not the case for some of our students,” Jarvis said. “There are a lot of barriers for some students to fully enjoy the

THE PARTHENON The Huntington Museum of Art will present a new exhibit, “A Fragile Peace: The Magic of American Cameo Glass from The Touma Collection,” Saturday, Oct. 1.

All the cameo glass pieces in the exhibit are made by Kelsey Murphy and donated by Doctor Joseph Touma.

Murphy worked at Pilgrim Glass Corporation in Ceredo, West Virginia. In 2002, marketing conditions forced the Pilgrim factory to shut down. Through the support of Touma, Murphy has produced a series of works from the last of the remaining uncarved cameo blanks from the factory that consist of five layers of glass or more.

“The Marshall University Drinko Library has a lot of work that he donated that Kelsey designed in her earlier work,” Chris Hatten, senior curator at the museum said.

“These are new things, so we are excited to see those and have them on display here.”

Cameo glass is an ancient technique that the Romans used. It is made by glass blowers blowing a form or shape and layering different colors of glass inside. By etching and carving through the fused layers of colored glass, it creates designs derived from nature, mythology, local

landmarks and more.

“This is very sophisticated with the drawing and the design work that goes on and the results are pretty stunning,” Hatten said. “There is one that has scenes from 3rd avenue down by Pullman Square. I think our visitors will really appreciate the work.”

These works of art will join a smaller display of Pilgrim cameo pieces in the HMA Glass Gallery to showcase the glass creations that sprang from this West Virginiabased venture.

“The other angle on this is that Kelsey is getting ready to move to Florida,” Hatten said. “It’s one more chance to honor her for the work she has done here.”

The exhibit will be on display Saturday, Oct. 1 through Jan. 8. The opening reception and catalog debut for the exhibit will be free and open to the public from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 2.

During the reception, Kelsey and Dr. Touma will make a few brief remarks and the HMOA will also unveil a catalog of the show as well. Copies of the catalog will be available for purchase from The Museum Shop.

Upon being elected president of SGA, Jarvis made history, but he said he didn’t even know it and often forgets.

“It wasn’t until an administrator told me in the nicest way possible that in the history of Marshall’s SGA program there has never been an openly gay nominee elected as president,” Jarvis said. “I don’t know how true that may be, but it is an honor to be in this position.”

Jarvis said the administrator that told him about his historic accomplishment said it is not only historic for Jarvis, but for the university as a whole in regard to acceptance and growth among the student body.

“When she told me, she also mentioned that this wouldn’t have been tolerated here 10 years ago,” Jarvis said. “I know there are still some colleges where this isn’t tolerated. I’ve talked to some students attending universities down south and they’ve said that accepting an openly gay president wouldn’t be accepting. Me being elected into this position showed me that this campus is ready for change and ready to set the standard for the future.”

Both Kinner and Jarvis are setting an example, with Kinner being a woman elected into a leadership role and Jarvis being openly gay, for establishing equality in light of the preconceived notion that only straight men can be great leaders.

“We can use ourselves as a platform to evoke change,” Jarvis said.

“For anybody from any background … there is an opportunity here.

You are valued as a person on what you think, say or do not, on things that you can’t change about yourself.”

Although Jarvis is paving the way for change, there are still some areas that he said he will be working to improve during his term as president.

“We do a great job in diversity, but not in inclusiveness,” he said.

“Yes, the people in power positions may be diverse in race, but that hardly means anything if they don’t talk and collaborate.”

Gilbert called Huntington “a city on a hill” and expressed a hope that Marshall University might grow in the future, through enrollment, adding doctoral programs and increasing faculty and staff salaries. He said as the university grows, the Huntington community will grow alongside it, through service learning projects,

university partnerships and students becoming active in the work environment.

“It is my goal not to disappoint those who have great hope in the future of Marshall,” Gilbert said.

Gilbert said the future of Marshall is greatly dependent on its students. Gilbert characterized what he wants to see in Marshall students as “seekers of truth, lifetime learners, defenders of justice, problem solvers

and encouragers of diversity.”

The Investiture ceremony ended with a standing ovation and a swell of music, ushered in by Gilbert’s final encouragement toward his fellow members of the Thundering Herd.

“We are destined for greatness,” Gilbert said. “We are sons and daughters of Marshall.”

The interview with comedian Zack Galifianakis appeared on the Funny or Die website Thursday.

Among Galifianakis’ questions was whether she ever watched Donald Trump and thought, “I should be more racist.” Clinton just shook her head, smiling.

“I really regret doing this,” Clinton deadpanned at one point during the tongue-andcheek interview.

Galifianakis’ popular online program generated more than 35 million views when President

Barack Obama appeared on it in 2014 while he was encouraging young people to sign up for the Affordable Care Act. The latest interview comes as Clinton has been courting young voters in her campaign against Trump.

During the five-minute exchange, Clinton and Galifianakis riffed about what Trump should wear to the first debate. Clinton said: “I assume he’ll wear that red power tie.” Galifianakis replied: “Or maybe a white power tie.”

The actor said he wanted to meet the person who makes Clinton’s pant suits because he wants to go as a “librarian from outer space” for Halloween.

Looking back, Clinton denied she had any regrets over losing the support of Baio, the 1970s

and 1980s sit-com star who spoke at the Republican National Convention.

Delving into her time as secretary of state, Galifianakis asked Clinton how many words per minute she could type. And whether Obama liked his coffee, “like himself — weak?”

He also asked the potential first woman president — who is 68 — if the nation would be “stuck with Tim Kaine for nine months” if she became pregnant.

Ending the interview, Galifianakis referenced her use of a private email server, asking, “What’s the best way to reach you? Email?”

Clinton stared at him and didn’t respond.
