ABOUT ME

I AM MURAD ALI, AN ARCHITECT DRIVEN BY A PROFOUND BELIEF THAT ARCHITECTURE IS AN EXPRESSION OF HUMAN CIVILIZATION. INSPIRED BY ARCHITECTURAL FORMS THROUGHOUT HISTORY, I STRIVE TO PUSH THE BOUNDARIES OF DESIGN THROUGH INNOVATION AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL. MY WORK FOCUSES ON CREATING SPACES THAT BLEND FUNCTIONALITY, SUSTAINABILITY, AND ARTISTIC FLAIR. JOURNEY

IT IS HOT, HUMID AND WARM OUTSIDE. AFTER DEBOARDING THE BUS, YOU WALK TOWARDS THE MUSEUM. TIRED OF THE CITY LIFE, OF CONCRETE JUNGLES AND OF TOXIC AND POLLUTED AIR. YOU SET YOUR EYES ON A GREEN LANDSCAPE. YOU HEAR THE SOUND OF RUSTLING LEAVES. A COOL BREEZE MOVING THROUGH THE GREENERY INVITES YOU IN. YOU ENTER A PUBLIC SPACE WITH NO BOUNDARY WALLS. YOU STOP FOR A MOMENT AND THEN WALK TOWARDS THE ENTRANCE OF THE MUSEUM FOLLOWING A PATH THAT SUITS YOU, YOU DECIDE WHETHER TO WALK ON THE PAVEMENT, GRASS OR HIKE THE LANDSCAPE.

YOU SEE NATURE REFLECTING ON THE LARGE GLASS PANELS OF THE MUSEUM. YOU FEEL DISCONNECTED FROM THE BUSY CITY LIFE. YOU ENTER THE MUSEUM AND ARE GREETED BY A WIDE HALL. YOU TAKE A BREATH OF CLEAN COLD AIR IN AND MOVE THROUGH THE OPEN HALL, SERVING AS A BUFFER BETWEEN THE OUTSIDE AND INSIDE. YOU MOVE THROUGH THE MUSEUM FOLLOWING THE LIGHT, COMING THROUGH THE SKYLIGHTS ONTO THE SCULPTURES. YOU VISIT GALLERY BY GALLERY. YOU DESCEND DOWN THE BASEMENT. THE PROSCENIUM GUIDES YOU TO THE ARTISTS’ GALLERY. YOU FOLLOW THE LIGHT, AND VISIT THE SCULPTURAL GALLERIES WITH A CENTRAL SKYLIGHT. YOU VISIT THE REST OF THE MUSEUM. BEFORE YOU DEPART, YOU TAKE A MOMENT TO ENJOY TEA CUP AT THE CAFETERIA, ABSORBING THE BEAUTY OF NATURE. YOU MOVE THROUGH THE GREEN ROOF MERGING WITH THE LANDSCAPE. WALKING DOWN THE RAMP, YOU STOP FOR A MOMENT. THE SOOTHING VIEW OF NATURE SETTLES IN YOUR MIND AS YOU LEAVE.

THE MASTERPLAN FOR THE EARTH SHELTERED MUSEUM IS METICULOUSLY DESIGNED TO MAXIMIZE ITS INTEGRATION WITH THE NATURAL SURROUNDINGS. IT INCLUDES STRATEGIC PLACEMENT OF THE MUSEUM WITHIN THE LANDSCAPE, UTILIZING THE SITE'S CONTOURS FOR A SEAMLESS BLEND. THE MASTERPLAN ALSO INCORPORATES EXTENSIVE GREEN SPACES, GARDENS, AND WALKWAYS, ENHANCING THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE AND PROMOTING ECOLOGICAL HARMONY.

REGULATING LINES CONVERGE AT THE CENTER, CREATING A PROSCENIUM EFFECT. MOVING AWAY FROM THE CENTER, LINES CREATE FORESHORTENING, MAKING DISTANCES SEEM SHORTER. CURVED CORRIDORS ALSO CREATE A SENSE OF SHORTER DISTANCE.

/TOWARDS LIGHT

NATURAL LIGHT GUIDES IN GALLERIES. ENTRANCE, EXIT, AND BREAK AREAS HAVE AMPLE NATURAL LIGHT. AUDITORIUMS, DIGITAL GALLERIES, AND TOILETS USE ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING. CONTROLLED ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING IS PREFERRED IN WASHROOMS FOR GERM-KILLING BENEFITS.

AIR

THE DESIGN FAVORS MECHANICAL VENTILATION IN FAVOR OF NATURAL. THIS IS IN REACTION TO THE AIR QUALITY OF LAHORE. MECHANICAL VENTILATION WILL ALLOW FOR ACTIVE AIR PURIFICATION THROUGH HEPA FILTERS WHICH HAS PROVEN TO BE QUITE AFFECTIVE.

/SECTION

THE ELEVATION OF THE EARTH SHELTERED MUSEUM SHOWCASES A HARMONIOUS INTEGRATION OF NATURE AND ARCHITECTURE. GLASS REFLECTS THE SURROUNDING LANDSCAPE CAMOUFLAGING THE BUILDING EVEN MORE. THE SECTION REVEALS A CLEVER USE OF THE EARTH'S THERMAL MASS FOR NATURAL INSULATION AND TEMPERATURE REGULATION, ENSURING A SUSTAINABLE AND ENERGY-EFFICIENT DESIGN.

THE SUN IS ABOUT TO SET, AND GOLDEN RAYS OF LIGHT LEAKING FROM THE BRISLING LEAVES HIT YOUR FACE AS YOU WALK ON THE FOOTPATH TOWARDS THE SQUARE. YOU HEAR BIRDS, PEOPLE AND THE SOUNDS OF THE CITY AS YOU ENTER THE SQUARE. THE WHITE ARCHITECTURE AND THE DELICATE DETAILS OF INDO-SARACENIC ARCHITECTURE RUN THROUGH YOUR EYES JUST BEFORE YOU ARE DISTRACTED BY THE URBAN LIFE BOOMING IN THE SQUARE. YOU FEEL BOTH ALIENATED AND AT HOME AT THE NAME TIME IN THE VERY HEART OF THE CITY.

THE SQUARE AND COMMERCIAL AREA IS DESIGNED IN SUCH A WAY THAT AN IDENTITY IS CREATED, SUCH IS ACHIEVED BY USING THE PRINCIPLES OF URBAN DESIGN. BY CREATING VOLUMES, REPETITION, PATTERNS, HARMONY, HIGHLIGHTS, AND CONTRAST IN MATERIALS WITH RESPECT TO THE HUMAN SCALE, THE SPACE HAS BEEN GIVEN A NOT ONLY UNIQUE BUT ALSO AN ENGAGING CHARACTER.

NORTH - SOUTH AXIS

THIS AXIS CAPTURES TWO REALITIES OF CITY LIFE; ONE IS THE NEED TO CONNECT TO THE NATURE WHILE THE OTHER IS THE INEVITABLE WORK AND RESPONSIBILITIES THAT COMES WITH LIFE. LONGING FROM NORTH TO SOUTH, ONE SEES NATURE FRAMED IN AN ARCH WHILE LOOKING FROM SOUTH TO NORTH ONE SEES BUSY ROAD AND COMMERCIAL AREA.

EAST - WEST AXIS

THE MAIN ENTRANCE OF THE MOSQUE FOLLOWS AN EAST-TO-WEST AXIS. THE JOURNEY FROM EAST TO WEST STARTS WITH A STAIRWAY LEADING UP TO A PASSAGE BETWEEN TWO BUILDING BLOCKS OF THE MOSQUE WITH ARE ARRANGED IN SUCH A WAY THAT THEY CREATE A FORCED PERSPECTIVE MAKING THE PASSAGE SEEM LONGER BUT ALSO EMPHASIZING THE ARCHED ENTRANCE FRAMING THE DOME, COURTYARD, WINDOW OF THE PRAYER HALL AND ENTRANCE TO THE PRAYER HALL.

THE DESIGN PROPOSAL FOR THE MOSQUE EMBODIES AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE ESSENTIAL VALUES THAT MAKE A COMMUNITY THRIVE. IT RECOGNIZES THAT ARCHITECTURE CAN CREATE MORE THAN JUST A PHYSICAL SPACE, BUT A SPIRITUAL AND SOCIAL SPACE AS WELL. THE INCORPORATION OF TRADITIONAL ISLAMIC ARCHITECTURE IS A NOD TO THE RICH HERITAGE OF THE COMMUNITY, WHILE THE CONTEMPORARY DESIGN ELEMENTS SIGNAL A WILLINGNESS TO ADAPT AND EVOLVE WITH THE TIMES. THE PROPOSAL'S PRIORITIZATION OF ACCESSIBILITY, SUSTAINABILITY, AND INCLUSIVITY REFLECTS A COMMITMENT TO THE VALUES OF EQUALITY, ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP, AND SOCIAL COHESION. AT ITS CORE, THE MOSQUE REPRESENTS A SPACE WHERE PEOPLE CAN COME TOGETHER TO CONNECT, TO LEARN, TO PRAY, AND TO FIND A SENSE OF BELONGING. IT RECOGNIZES THAT WE ARE ALL INTERCONNECTED AND THAT FOSTERING A STRONG SENSE OF COMMUNITY IS ESSENTIAL FOR OUR COLLECTIVE WELL-BEING. IN ESSENCE, THE DESIGN PROPOSAL FOR THE MOSQUE SPEAKS TO A VISION OF A SOCIETY THAT IS HARMONIOUS, SUSTAINABLE, AND INCLUSIVE. A VISION THAT IS CENTERED ON THE COLLECTIVE GOOD AND RECOGNIZES THE ESSENTIAL ROLE THAT COMMUNITY PLAYS IN ACHIEVING THAT VISION.

HOSPITAL DESIGN

RAVIMEDICALCOMPLEX

THE RAVI MEDICAL COMPLEX IS A PROFOUND EXPLORATION OF HEALING ARCHITECTURE THAT AIMS TO RESHAPE HEALTHCARE DESIGN. IT TRANSCENDS CONVENTIONAL BOUNDARIES BY CREATING A SPACE THAT GOES BEYOND FUNCTIONALITY AND EMBRACES THE SPIRITUAL ESSENCE OF PATIENTS.

THROUGH THE INTEGRATION OF NATURAL ELEMENTS, HARMONIOUS COLOURS, AND CALMING TEXTURES, THE COMPLEX BECOMES A SANCTUARY OF SERENITY. THE DESIGN OPTIMIZES THE FLOW OF PATIENT CARE, PROMOTING A HARMONIOUS RHYTHM WITHIN THE SPACE. ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES ARE SEAMLESSLY INTEGRATED INTO SPECIALIZED DEPARTMENTS, ELEVATING THE STANDARD OF MEDICAL CARE. SUSTAINABILITY AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY ARE UPHELD AS SACRED RESPONSIBILITIES, WITH ECO-FRIENDLY MATERIALS AND SYSTEMS INCORPORATED.

SHADRAH GATEWAY

THE GATEWAY DESIGN OF LAHORE MERGES PARAMETRIC AND MUGHAL ELEMENTS, INVITING REFLECTION ON IDENTITY, TRADITION, AND INNOVATION. IT REPRESENTS A THRESHOLD BETWEEN PAST AND PRESENT, DELVING INTO LAHORE'S COLLECTIVE MEMORY. WITH FLUID FORMS AND INTRICATE DETAILS, IT HONORS HERITAGE WHILE EMBRACING HUMAN CREATIVITY. IT IS A PHILOSOPHICAL JOURNEY OF SELFDISCOVERY WHERE DESIGN AND PHILOSOPHY INTERSECT.

06/ HOUSE OF HORROR

PAVILLION DESIGN / CONCEPT

HOUSE OF HORROR IS PAVILLION DESIGN BASED ON “AJJ AAKHAN WARIS KHAN NU” A POEM BY POETESS AMRITA PRITAM, IN WHICH SHE DESCRIBES THE HORRORS AND DESTRUCTION IN PUNJAB FOLLOWED BY THE PARITION OF INDIA. SPACES ARE PLACED IN A CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER, ACCORDING TO THE HORRORS DESCRIBED IN THE POEM. CREATING TWO DIFFERENT EXPERICENCES UPON ENTRANCE AND DEPARTURE. THE FORM IS DESIGN TO OVERWHELM AND DWARF ONE, SHOWCASING THE HORRORS OF THE TIME OF PARTITION.

THE PAVILION DESIGN CONCEPT AIMS TO EVOKE THE EMOTIONS OF SADNESS AND HORROR DESCRIBED IN THE POEM WHILE SYMBOLICALLY REPRESENTING THE HISTORY AND CAUSES OF THE PARTITION OF INDIA. THE SHIP-LIKE FACADE SIGNIFIES THE ARRIVAL OF THE BRITISH, THEIR USE OF THE "DIVIDE AND CONQUER" STRATEGY, AND THE SUBSEQUENT PARTITION THAT LED TO HATRED BETWEEN PREVIOUSLY PEACEFUL SECTS. THE STEEL FACADE IS FOLLOWED BY PISE WALLS, WHICH REFLECT THE HUMBLE NATURE OF PUNJAB.

/ FLOOR PLAN / DETAILS

AS ONE ENTERS THE SPACE, THEY ARE GREETED BY THE DARK INTERIOR CONTRASTING WITH THE RED SKYLIGHT AND THE SOUND OF WATER ECHOING THROUGHT THE PAVILLION FOLLOWED BY IVY, PEEPAL TREE AND THE STATUES WITH ANOTHER RED SKYLIGHT.

KATAS RAJ TEMPLE COMPLEX - A HINDU TEMPLE COMPLEX SITUATED IN KATAS, NORTHERN PUNJAB, PAKISTAN. LOCATED ON THE PEAK OF A SMALL HILLOCK OF THE KATAS TEMPLES LIES SATH-GARH TEMPLES. "SAT" IS AN URDU LANGUAGE WORD THAT MEANS "SEVEN" AND "GARH" IS ALSO AN URDU WORD THAT MEANS "VILLAGE OR DISTRICT" BUT IN THIS CONTEXT, IT'S USED AS THE WORD "MANDIR". SATH GARH MEANS "SEVEN HOUSES" OR A GROUP OF SEVEN ANCIENT TEMPLES, AMONG THESE TEMPLES THERE IS A CENTRAL BIG TEMPLE, SURROUNDED BY THE SMALLER ONES.
