Background Our world continues to face an ever increasing challenge of securing access to clean water and proper hygiene to control and prevent the spread of disease Among the most critical hygiene and water related statistics: A WHO report concludes that antimicrobial resistance is a serious threat to public health in every region of the world and the health care industry must work quickly to enhance infection prevention and control Health-care associated infections contribute to more than 4000 child deaths each day; hand hygiene is a critical step to prevent this. Viruses and bacteria can live on surfaces in hospitals for up to 9 months, and in some cases even for years. 50% of hospital beds around the world are taken by patients suffering from diseases related to unsafe drinking water, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene. 1 billion people do not have access to potable water supply 2.4 billion people don’t have access to basic sanitation facility 2 billion people annually die from diarrheal diseases; most of which are children under 5 years of age Protozoa, bacteria and viruses are among the many types of microorganisms that can cause water borne diseases. In the absence of proper medical treatment, the consumption of contaminated water can often be fatal. When medial care is availed, it can be one of the main contributors to families remaining in poverty.
Sanifide introduces proprietary XiniX technology to offer affordable products for both water purification and hygiene. The liquefied chlorine dioxide products are all-natural highly effective, fast acting bactericides and virucides. XiniX technology provides an environmental, healthy and superior performing alternative to alcohol, chlorine and other chemical based alternatives for both water purification and hand/surface disinfection.
Chlorine Dioxide (ClO2) Facts What is ClO2? Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is a gas with strong oxidizing properties. It is the only biocide that is a molecular free radical. Having 19 electrons of its own, ClO2 only reacts with substances that give off an electron. An "oxidizing agent" removes electrons from reactive molecules, and by this process, ClO2 quickly neutralizes and eliminates odors, acts as a bleach, and also breaks the cell wall of microorganisms. ClO2's action is rapid on most microorganisms and is unique in its ability to kill bacteria, virus, fungus and spores. Currently, there are hundreds of water treatment plants in the United States and more than one thousand across Europe utilizing ClO2 to purify municipal drinking water systems. Numerous studies have proven that chlorine dioxide, when used at the appropriate concentrations, has no adverse health effects, either by skin contact or ingestion.
How Does ClO2 Compare to Chlorine-based Alternatives? Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) and chlorine (CL) share the commonality of both having chlorine atoms, having the name chlorine in it and the fact that they both react by a process called oxidation. That is where the similarity ends. The mechanisms of their reaction and the by-products of that reaction are very different. Chlorine reacts by adding chlorine atoms, particularly when reacting with organic compounds. This process is what causes trichloromethanes, dioxins, and trihalomethanes, which are carcinogens. Chlorine is also highly alkaline, resulting in limited antimicrobial activity. On the other hand chlorine dioxide reacts with organics by adding oxygen. When this process is completed, the ClO2 is reduced to the chlorite ion, CL-, which is found in sea salt and table salt. Throughout the whole oxidation process, no toxic by-products are ever formed. That is something that chlorine can never replicate. Chlorine dioxide, when used at proper concentrations, is much less corrosive than chlorine and also requires much less product to kill bacteria and microorganisms.
What Does Chlorine Dioxide Do? Against Bacteria Substances of organic nature in bacterial cells react with chlorine dioxide, causing several cellular processes to be interrupted. Chlorine dioxide reacts directly with amino acids and the RNA in the cell. The production of proteins is prevented. Chlorine dioxide affects the cell membrane by changing membrane proteins and fats and by prevention of inhalation. When bacteria are eliminated, the cell wall is penetrated by chlorine dioxide. Bacteria are incapable of building up resistance to Chlorine Dioxide, which makes ClO2 highly effective for any kind of disinfection.
Against Viruses Viruses are eliminated in a different way; chlorine dioxide reacts with peptone, a water-soluble substance that originates from hydrolisisof proteins to amino acids. Chlorine dioxide kills viruses by prevention of protein formation. Chlorine dioxide is more effective against viruses than chlorine or ozone in water purification. Chlorine dioxide is more effective as a disinfectant than chlorine against water borne pathogenic microbes such as viruses, bacteria and protozoa, including Giardia Lambiaand Cryptosporidium parasites, which are found in drinking water and induce diseases called 'giardiasis' and 'cryptosporidiosis'.
What are the Advantages of Chlorine Dioxide? As a disinfectant it has the advantage that it directly reacts with the cell wall of microorganisms. This reaction is not dependent on reaction time or concentration. In contrast to non-oxidizing disinfectants, chlorine dioxide kills microorganisms even when they are inactive. Therefore the chlorine dioxide concentration needed to effectively kill microorganisms is lower than non-oxidizing disinfectant concentrations. Microorganisms are incapable of building up any resistance to Chlorine Dioxide, which makes ClO2 highly effective for any kind of disinfection. Chlorine dioxide is less corrosive than chlorine and superior for the control of legionella bacteria. Chlorine dioxide is superior to some other secondary water disinfection methods in that chlorine dioxide: 1) is an EPA registered biocide, 2) is not negatively impacted by pH 3) does not lose efficacy over time (the bacteria will not grow resistant to it) and 4) is not negatively impacted by silica and phosphate, which are commonly used potable water corrosion inhibitors. As a hand sanitizer, chlorine dioxide based products differ significantly from alcohol based products, since chlorine dioxide is an oxygen emitting oxidant. Alcohol does not have the same effectiveness rate as chlorine dioxide and it requires a longer contact time and larger volumes of product for each treatment. This means that all micro organisms are not killed or removed, and it also dries out hands and another sensitive materials. Alcohol based hand and surface sanitizers are also ineffective on spores, whereas Chlorine Dioxide eliminates both bacteria and spores that can lead to the spread of disease.
Addressing one of the most problematic issues in health care Over the past decade, there has been an increasing incidence of healthcare associated infections. This is of particular concern for patients in acute care scenarios who are at higher risk of infection, but also applicable to other patients treated in hospitals. The World Health Organization (WHO), in their ground-breaking reporting in 2014, warn that this is no longer a serious future global threat, but a frightening reality now. MRSA, known as “the Bug" is passed by the intestinal bacterium Clostridium difficile. This can cause severe diarrhea after antibiotic use, called Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea ( CDAD ). The most well known is the widespread bacterium methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA ). According to the WHO, people with MRSA infections as opposed to non-resistant Staph infections are 64% more likely to die. In the Americas region, up to 90% of Staph infections are now MRSA. Bacteria’s ability to effectively form spores (resting stages) makes it easy to spread within health care environments. The spores are resistant to heat as a disinfectant and can remain infectious in the environment for months and years. Disease transmission occurs directly between patients or by health workers and the environment. It is now more critical than ever to enhace infection prevention and control. Today the most common 70% alcohol hand disinfection solutions used in health care, nor surface cleaning agents, have the desired effect on spores that contaminate the hospital wards. Chlorine Dioxide has a known effect on spores and can be delivered through the air. Two independent pilot studies in 2008 conducted at the University Hospital in Orebro Sweden, exhibited a good effect of C. difficilespores in contaminated solutions, and can be an effective weapon to help the health care industry prevent further spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria and related infections.
SanDes Impact on Bacteria and Spores vs. Alcohol Test results show that SanDes has a very strong inactivation effect on bacteria and spores. Ethyl alcohol (liquid or gel) is only effective for inactivation of bacteria but is without effect on spores.
At 400, 800 and 1500 ppm respectively, the inactivation of the spores is complete and generates the same result as at the low concentration of 200 ppm. The result is very good , showing that SanDes for hand disinfection is also effective for surface disinfection. For treatment of larger surface areas with machine equipment, SanDesSurf may be used without any modification. For hand disinfection the recommended concentration is around 500 ppm. For surfaces the concentration should be around 200 ppmto a maximum 400 ppm.
