COUNTRIES OF THE WORLD

UNITED S

The United States of America is made up of 50 states and five self-

governing territories scattered over mainland North America, the

Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. By total area, the United States

is the fourth-largest and third-most populous country in the world.

Alaska, the largest of the country's states, covers an area of

7,663,940.6 km2 (2,959,064 sq mi), while the total area covered by

the five self-governing territories is 23,789 km2 (9,185 sq mi). In the

mainland's north, the Atlantic coastline is overlooked by deciduous

forests that eventually rise to become the Appalachian Mountains.

meet with the Pacific coast in more fertile regions in the south. Such a vast mainland offers virtually every type of climate, including

tropical, continental, Mediterranean, alpine and arid. The country is also subject to extremes that range from regular tornadoes in the south and the midwest to hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico and

volcanic activity in Hawaii and Alaska.

CANADA

Canada is the second-largest country in the world

and is situated in the north of the North American

continent. The country extends from the Atlantic

to the Pacific Oceans and the United States

border to Alaska and the Arctic Ocean. The country is divided into 10 provinces and three

territories and is chiefly dominated by mountains, dense forest, tundra and lakes. Most of Canada's population lives near the southern border, and

Canadian cities are home to 82 percent of the entire population. The capital city of Canada is Ottawa, with Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal its

largest cities. Other major centres include

Edmonton, Calgary, Hamilton, Winnipeg and

Quebec City. Geologically, Canada is volcanically

active, and its most notable non-dormant craters

are on Mount Meagher, Mount Cayley, Mount Garibaldi and the volcanic complex of Mount

Edziza. The largest recorded eruption was in 1775

in British Columbia. The Great Lakes are situated

on the border of Canada and the USA, connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the inland of the country

through the Saint Lawrence River. The lakes are the largest freshwater group of lakes in the world

and account for 21 percent of the world's surface fresh water. Canada's climate varies between its

vast regions, and many parts of the country

experience harsh winters. In the interior, the Prairie lands are the country's food bowl and

experience an average daily temperature in winter of −15°C (5°F), and occasionally drop to below

−40°C (−40°F). Much of Canada's coastal areas are

snow-covered for half of the year, and the warmest areas in the country are found between

the east and west coasts and can climb to 30°C

(86°F).

SOUTH AMERICA

South America is a continent in the Western Hemisphere, mostly in the Southern Hemisphere, with a relatively small portion in the Northern Hemisphere. It may also be considered a subcontinent of the Americas, which is how it is viewed in the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking regions of the Americas. The reference to South America instead of other regions (like Latin America or the Southern Cone) has increased in the last decades due to changing geopolitical dynamics (in particular, the rise of Brazil). It is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean; North America and the Caribbean Sea lie to the northwest. It includes twelve sovereign states (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela), a part of France (French Guiana), and a non-sovereign area (the Falkland Islands, a British Overseas Territory though this is disputed by Argentina). In addition to this, the

BRAZIL

ABC islands of the Kingdom of the Netherlands,

Trinidad and Tobago, and Panama may also be considered part of South America.

CENTRAL AMERICA

Central America is sometimes defined as a subcontinent of the Americas. This region is bordered by Mexico to the north, Colombia to the southeast, the Caribbean Sea to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west and south. Central America consists of seven countries: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama. The combined population of Central America is estimated to be 42 million.

HONDURAS

The Republic of Honduras was once known as the

Spanish Honduras and it sits on the southern Pacific

Gulf of Fonseca and the northern Caribbean Gulf of

Honduras. On land, Honduras is bordered by El

Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua. The majority of

Honduras' landscape is covered with mountains, with a lowland jungle in the north-east, a densely

populated lowland in the north-west and narrow plains

along the coastline. Offshore from the north coast are

the Swan Islands and the Islas de la Bahía. Natural

resources within Honduras include gold, silver, timber,

lead, copper, iron ore, zinc, fish, coal and shrimp.

There are 18 departments that comprise Honduras

administratively. Of those, Francisco Morazán is a

department in Honduras' central district, and it is

home to the country's capital, Tegucigalpa. Honduras is a biodiverse country, renowned for its plant and

animal species. Over 600 species of orchid can be found in the country, along with 250 species of

amphibians and reptiles, 110 mammal species and 700

bird species. Half of the mammals indigenous to Honduras are bats. The forestry of Honduras is world

renowned, and the north-east of the country is home

to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Río Plátano

Biosphere Reserve. As well as rainforests, Honduras

has cloud forests that sit at levels of up to 3,000m

(9,700 ft). Other notable geographic features of Honduras are savanna, mangroves, pine and oak

forests, and the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System.

CARIBBEAN

Situated largely on the Caribbean Plate, the region has more than 700 islands, islets, reefs and cays. Island arcs delineate the eastern and northern edges of the Caribbean Sea: The Greater Antilles and the Lucayan Archipelago on the north and the Lesser Antilles and the on the south and east (which includes the Leeward Antilles). The Lucayan Archipelago (the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands), do not border the Caribbean Sea, but are still within the boundaries of the Caribbean region. On the mainland, Belize, Nicaragua, the Caribbean region of Colombia, Cozumel, the Yucatán Peninsula, Margarita Island, and the Guyanas are often included due to their political and cultural ties with the region. EUROPE Europe is a continent located entirely in the Northern Hemisphere

and mostly in the Eastern Hemisphere. It is bordered by the Arctic

Ocean to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Asia to the east, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. It comprises the westernmost part of Eurasia.

Europe is most commonly considered to be separated from Asia by

the watershed divides of the Ural and Caucasus Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian and Black Seas and the waterways of the Turkish

Straits. Although the term "continent" implies physical geography,

the land border is somewhat arbitrary and has been redefined several

times since its first conception in classical antiquity. The division of

Eurasia into two continents reflects East-West cultural, linguistic and ethnic differences which vary on a spectrum rather than with a sharp

dividing line. The geographic border between Europe and Asia does

not follow any state boundaries: Turkey, Russia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Kazakhstan are transcontinental countries. France, Portugal,

Netherlands, Spain and United Kingdom are also transcontinental in that the main portion is in Europe while pockets of their territory are located in other continents.

Europe covers about 10,180,000 square kilometres (3,930,000 sq mi),

or 2% of the Earth's surface (6.8% of land area). Politically, Europe is divided into about fifty sovereign states of which the Russian Federation is the largest and most populous, spanning 39% of the

continent and comprising 15% of its population. Europe had a total

population of about 741 million (about 11% of the world population) as of 2016.

Europe, in particular ancient Greece and ancient Rome, was the

birthplace of Western civilization. The fall of the Western Roman

Empire in 476 AD and the subsequent Migration Period marked the

end of ancient history and the beginning of the Middle Ages.

Renaissance humanism, exploration, art and science led to the

modern era. Since the Age of Discovery started by Portugal and Spain, Europe played a predominant role in global affairs. Between

the 16th and 20th centuries, European powers controlled at various

times the Americas, almost all of Africa and Oceania and the majority

of Asia.

The major part of Germany experiences a temperate,

seasonal climate, which is moderated through the effects of the North Atlantic Drift's warmer waters.

In the east of Germany, the climate is more continental, with cold winters, very warm summers

and less rainfall than the west. The plant and animal

life of Germany is common to most of Central

Europe, and oak, beech and assorted deciduous

trees mainly populate one-third of the country's

forests. In mountainous areas, conifers, firs and

spruce trees grow widely. The country's 16 national

Scandinavia The name Scandinavia originally referred to the former Danish, now Swedish, region of Scania. Scandinavia and Scandinavian entered usage in the late 18th century, being introduced by the early linguistic

and cultural Scandinavist movement. The majority of the population

of Scandinavia are descended from several North Germanic tribes

who originally inhabited the southern part of Scandinavia and spoke

a Germanic language that evolved into Old Norse. Icelanders and the Faroese are to a significant extent descended from the Norse and are

therefore often seen as Scandinavian. Finland is mainly populated by

Finns, with a minority of approximately 5% of Swedish speakers. A

small minority of Sami people live in the extreme north of Scandinavia. The Danish, Norwegian and Swedish languages form a dialect

continuum and are known as the Scandinavian languages—all of which are considered mutually intelligible with one another. Faroese and

Icelandic, sometimes referred to as insular Scandinavian languages, are intelligible in continental Scandinavian languages only to a limited

extent. Finnish and Meänkieli are closely related to each other and

more distantly to the Sami languages, but are entirely unrelated to

the Scandinavian languages. Apart from these, German, Yiddish and Romani are recognized minority languages in parts of Scandinavia.

Whereas the term "Scandinavia" is relatively straightforward as

traditionally relating to the three kingdoms of Denmark, Norway and Sweden there exists some ambiguity as regards the ethnic aspect of the concept in the modern era. Traditionally, the term refers

specifically to the majority peoples of Denmark, Norway and Sweden, their states, their Germanic languages and their culture. In the modern

era, the term will often include minority peoples such as the Sami and Meänkieli speakers in a political and to some extent cultural sense as

they are citizens of Scandinavian countries and speak Scandinavian languages either as their first or second language. However,

Scandinavian is still also seen as an ethnic term for the Germanic majority peoples of Scandinavia and as such the inclusion of Sami and

Finnish speakers can be seen as controversial within these groups.

MIDDLE EAST

The Middle East is a transcontinental region centered on Western Asia, Turkey (both Asian and European), and Egypt (which is mostly in North Africa). Saudi Arabia is geographically the largest Middle Eastern nation while Bahrain is the smallest. The corresponding adjective is Middle Eastern and the derived noun is Middle Easterner. The term has come into wider usage as a replacement of the term Near East (as opposed to the Far East) beginning in the early 20th century. Arabs, Turks, Persians, Kurds, and Azeris (excluding Azerbaijan) constitute the largest ethnic groups in the region by population. Arabs constitute the largest ethnic group in the region by a clear margin. Indigenous minorities of the Middle East include Jews, Baloch, Assyrians, Berbers (who primarily live in North Africa), Copts, Druze, Lurs, Mandaeans, Samaritans, Shabaks, Tats, and Zazas. European ethnic groups that form a diaspora in the region include Albanians, Bosniaks, Circassians (including Kabardians), Crimean Tatars, Greeks, Franco-Levantines, and Italo-Levantines. Among other migrant populations are Chinese, Filipinos, Indians, Indonesians, Pakistanis, Pashtuns, Romani, and subSaharan Africans.

and its surrounding semi-desert areas. The largest continuous sand desert in the world, the Rub' al Khali, is

located in the southern sector of the country. Saudi

Arabia's most populous city is its capital, Riyadh, located in the centre of the Arabian Peninsula.

AFRICA

Africa is the world's second largest and second most-populous continent. At about 30.3 million km2 (11.7 million square miles) including adjacent islands, it covers 6% of Earth's total surface area and 20% of its land area. With 1.2 billion people, it accounts for about 16% of the world's human population. The continent is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Isthmus of Suez and the Red Sea to the northeast, the Indian Ocean to the southeast and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The continent includes Madagascar and various archipelagos. It contains 54 fully recognised sovereign states (countries), nine territories and two de facto independent states with limited or no recognition. The majority of the

SOUTH AFRICA

continent and its countries are in the Northern Hemisphere, with a substantial portion and number of countries in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Republic of South Africa is the African continent's southern-most country. Its coastline stretches along the Indian and South Atlantic Oceans, and it is bordered by Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Swaziland, Mozambique and Lesotho. As the world's 25th-largest county, South Africa is the only country to border both the Indian and Atlantic Oceans, and its coastline covers over 2,500 km (1,553 mi). South Africa's interior is comprised of a vast plateau that varies in altitude from 1,000 m (3,300 ft) to 2,100 m (6,900 ft), sloping down from the east to other points of the compass. Around the interior plateau sits the Great Escarpment, which at its highest (and eastern-most) point is known as the Drakensberg. To the south of the plateau lies the Great Karoo Plain, which runs north to become the dry and arid Bushmanland of South Africa before meeting with the Kalahari Desert. The middle of the country's interior plateau is the Highveld, which forms the hub of South Africa's commercial farming activities. The country's north-east is home to the Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces and the world renowned Kruger National Park, and its opposite south-west corner is comprised of the Cape Peninsula and the legislative capital city of Cape Town. South Africa's largest city, Johannesburg, also known as Joburg, Jozi and eGoli, is one of the world's 50-largest urban areas. Located in South Africa's wealthiest province (Gauteng), Johannesburg is also the seat of South Africa's Constitutional Court and the centre of the country's lucrative diamond and gold trade.

INDIA

India is the world's seventh-largest country by area and the second-largest by population. The

country is situated on the Indian Sub-continent

and is surrounded by the Bay of Bengal to the

south-east, the Indian Ocean to the south and

the Arabia Sea to the south-west. India also shares land borders with Pakistan, Nepal, China,

Myanmar (Burma), Bangladesh and Bhutan.

Nearby countries include Sri-Lanka and the

Maldives, while the Andaman, Nicobar and Lakshadweep Islands are also part of India's territory. The coastline of India, including its islands, is 7,517 km (4,700 mi) long, and the

majority of the mainland coastline is comprised

equally of sandy beaches and mudflats. Rivers of

Himalayan origin flow through India, and the

most important to the country's people is the

Ganges, followed by the Brahmaputra. Both

rivers flow into the Bay of Bengal. Other major

rivers include the Krishna, Godavari, Kaveri and

Mahanadi Rivers on the Bay of Bengal side, while the Tapti and Narmada drain into the Arabian

Sea. The Himalayas and the Thar Desert have a

major impact upon India's climate and are the

source of the seasonal monsoons experienced

throughout the country. India is one of the

world's 17 megadiverse countries, and it is home

to a large number of exotic animal species. Those animals live in habitats that are often

covered in canopied forests and comprise a little

over 20 percent of the entire country, or are part

of the Western Ghats, the Andaman Islands, North-Eastern India or the coniferous forests of

the Himalayas.Within protected habitats, the

most endangered of India's species are the

Bengal tiger, the Asiatic lion, the Indian white-

rumped vulture and the snow leopard.

KOREAN PENINSULA

Until the end of World War II, Korea was a single political entity whose territory roughly coincided with the Korean Peninsula. In August 1945, the Soviet Union declared war on Imperial Japan, as a result of an agreement with the United States, and liberated Korea north of the 38th parallel. U.S. forces subsequently moved into the south. By 1948, as a product of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States, Korea was divided into two regions, with separate governments. Both claimed to be the legitimate government of all of Korea, and neither accepted the border as permanent. The conflict escalated into open warfare when North Korean forces—supported by the Soviet Union and China— moved into the south on 25 June 1950. Since the Armistice Agreement ended the Korean War in 1953, the northern section of the peninsula has been governed by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, while the southern portion has been governed by the Republic of

KOREA (SOUTH) Korea.

South Korea is officially known as the Republic of Korea, and it sits on the Korean Peninsula to the south of North Korea and the Korean Demilitarized Zone. Maritime borders include the Sea of Japan to the east, the Yellow Sea to the west and the East China Sea and the Korea Strait at the country's southern tip. There are four distinct geographical regions within South Korea, those being the narrow coastal plains and high mountain ranges of the east, the broad coastal plains and hills and river basins of the west, and the Nakdong River basin in the south-east. Most of South Korea is mountainous and difficult to farm, and the centres of population, agriculture and industry are concentrated on the plains. South Korea's territory also extends to several thousand islands that sit off of the country's southern coast. The largest of the country's offshore islands is Jeju-do, which is 100 km (62 mi) away and has a total land area of 1,845 km2 (712 sq mi). On the South Korean mainland there are only 20 national parks, which are located away from the coast, as a vast majority of the country's coastal lands are devoted to urbanisation. Most South Koreans live in towering high-rise buildings, which are concentrated in the country's capital city of Seoul. In total, the population of the greater Seoul Capital Area sits at approximately 25 million people, and it is the fourth-largest of the world's metropolitan areas. The city of Seoul itself is home to 10 million South Koreans.

at 15th on the World Risk Index as a result. Due to the

distance between the country's islands, the climate of

Japan is a varied one and generally considered to be

temperate. The country's capital, Tokyo, is located on the island of Honshu in the Kantō Region. The city is

technically classified as a metropolis, and its main centre sits to the north-west of Tokyo Bay. Tokyo's

climate is a humid subtropical one, and its warmest

OCEANIA Oceania is a geographic region that includes Australasia, Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. Spanning the eastern and western

hemispheres, Oceania has a land area of 8,525,989 square kilometres

(3,291,903 sq mi) and a population of 40 million. Situated in the

southeast of the Asia-Pacific region, Oceania, when compared to

continental regions, is the smallest in land area and the second smallest in population after Antarctica.

Definitions of Oceania vary; however, the islands at the geographic

extremes of Oceania are generally considered to be the Bonin Islands,

a politically integral part of Japan; Hawaii, a state of the United States;

Clipperton Island, a possession of France; the Juan Fernรกndez Islands, belonging to Chile; and Macquarie Island, belonging to Australia. (The

United Nations has its own geopolitical definition of Oceania, but this consists of discrete political entities, and so excludes the Bonin

Islands, Hawaii, Clipperton Island, and the Juan Fernรกndez Islands,

along with Easter Island.) Oceania has a diverse mix of economies

from the highly developed and globally competitive financial markets

of Australia and New Zealand, which rank high in quality of life and

human development index, to the much less developed economies

that belong to countries such as Kiribati and Tuvalu, while also including medium-sized economies of Pacific islands such as Palau,

Fiji and Tonga. The largest and most populous country in Oceania is Australia, with Sydney being the largest city of both Oceania and

Australia. In the 1950s Indonesia and Philippines were removed from

Oceania and added to Asia; this resulted in Oceania as a "great division" of the world being replaced by the concept of the continent

of Australia.

The first settlers of Australia, New Guinea, and the large islands just

to the east arrived more than 60,000 years ago. Oceania was first explored by Europeans from the 16th century onward. Portuguese

navigators, between 1512 and 1526, reached the Tanimbar Islands, some of the Caroline Islands and west Papua New Guinea. On his first

voyage in the 18th century, James Cook, who later arrived at the

highly developed Hawaiian Islands, went to Tahiti and followed the east coast of Australia for the first time. The Pacific front saw major

action during the Second World War, mainly between Allied powers

the United States and Australia, and Axis power Japan.

INDONESIA

Indonesia is a transcontinental country that lies mainly in Southeast Asia and has territories in Oceania. The country sits

between the Pacific and Indian Oceans and is the largest island country in the world. Indonesia plays host to over 17,000

islands, 6,000 of which are inhabited. Within the world's fourth-largest country by population, half of Indonesia's

population lives on the island of Java. Outside of Java, islands belonging to Indonesia include Sumatra, Borneo (shared

with Malaysia and Brunei), Sulawesi and New Guinea (shared with Papua New Guinea), among others. Outside of its

shared island borders, Indonesia also shares maritime borders with Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Vietnam, Palau

and Australia. The capital city of Jakarta is on the island of Java, and it is also Indonesia's most populous city. Outside

of the country's numerous cities and towns, Indonesia is a country of high mountain lakes and vast rivers that act as

significant transportation and trade routes. There are at least 150 active volcanoes on Indonesia's islands, and the most

active of those today include Tambora and Krakatoa. Indonesia enjoys a relatively even climate on a year-round basis,

and it proximity to the Equator sees no great extremes between summer and winter. Across the majority of the country,

the wet season lasts from November to March, while the dry season arrives in April and ends in October. Outside of the higher mountainous regions, monsoons are common in Indonesia, and much of the country's landscape has been

shaped by seasonal rainfall. Outlying islands, including parts of Sulawesi and Sumba, have a drier climate.
