Dinosaurs are a diverse group of reptiles. They first appeared during the Triassic period, between 243 million years ago. When dinosaurs appeared, they were not the dominant terrestrial animals.
Dinosaurs first appeared 243 million years ago. Some were plant eaters and others meat eaters. Evidence suggests that all dinosaurs were egglaying; and that nest-building was a trait shared by many dinosaurs.
Dinosaurs lived many millions of years before the first humans. Dinosaurs are represented on every continent by both extant species (birds) and fossil remains.
It is believed that Dinosaurs were wiped out 66 million years ago, when an asteroid struck Earth.
Since the first dinosaur fossils were recognized in the early 19th century, mounted fossil dinosaur skeletons have been major attractions at museums around the world, and dinosaurs have become an enduring part of world culture.
Diplodocus is the longest dinosaur known. It had a long neck that it would have used to reach high and low vegetation, and to drink water.
