Nothing in her nearly 10 years in practice could have predicted that Dr. Rebecca Butler and Lantana Pediatrics would need to help more children than usual during a pandemic.

Before COVID-19, Butler was a sole practitioner who set aside one day a week to treat youth for mental health aid for depression, anxiety, and ADHD. Today, she and two others see someone every day as children’s mental health has escalated.

“Kids are really struggling with all the changes with school. There’s a lot more anxiety and depression, really, in all ages,” she said. “I’ve never had to send so many kids to treatment because they’ve gotten so down and in a bad place. We actually brought back Children’s Medical Center that has a mental health

To keep patients safe during the pandemic and likely beyond, Lantana Pediatrics has well-child visit patients use the back door while sick kids use the front. It also has eliminated its waiting room.

Butler aims to keep kids out of the urgent care facilities and into hers, including setting aside some of each day for same day appointments.

“My goal is to keep things more like a family feel with a small practice where patients come in and know us and we know them,” Butler said. “It makes our families feel

“I’m so glad kids are back in school for their mental health. Overall development to adulthood is important to be in that environment,” she said.
