ALLIES IN THE SAME MOVEMENT TOWARD

When Dr. Lisa Elliott thinks about the partnership she and her team at Cook Children’s have with Connections Wellness Group, each sentence that comes from her mouth is riddled with one heartwarming adjective after the next, and she playfully adds that she has to hold back tears thinking about a community that is becoming healthier and happier by the day. In all her years as a mental health provider, one of the bigger things she’s noticed is that while everyone is committed to kicking the stigma on mental health for patients of all ages, there hasn’t always been enough collaboration. That all changed once she got to know the people at Connections. “It brings tears to my eyes,” said Dr. Elliott, a renowned Clinical Neuropsychologist at Cook Children’s in Denton. “Being a mental health provider in this area for as long as I have, I can tell you that we have been desperate for quality, warm, genuine, compassionate, and higher level of care. It’s a great partnership, and I can’t be more thankful.” She added, “We have to work together when it comes to mental health.” By now, everyone in Denton County has heard of Connections Wellness Group. They have reinvented the healthcare wheel by consistently delivering a full wellness model for their patients, from family counseling to primary care, mental health for kids and adults, nutritional wellness, and everything in between. The idea is that with one phone call, a patient can have a team of doctors under one roof working together to solve everything from the flu or a stomach ache to more complex issues like depression, anxiety, and thoughts of suicide. And they are really good. Connections Wellness won six awards in Best of Denton County. This includes Children and Adolescent

Therapy, Couples and Family Therapy, Psychiatry, and Trauma Counseling. Michelle Dean was also named Best Children and Adolescent Therapist. Michele Menzie was named Best Mental Health professional. While awards are great, what makes Connections Wellness that much more unique is recognizing that they don’t function as an independent organization. Rather than get caught up in a territorial mindset, they routinely work alongside other healthcare professionals, community leaders, school districts, universities, and neighboring businesses, collaborating to live out everyone’s mission and vision of giving back wherever and whenever they can. “We are in a very fortunate position to be in a community that is focused and centered on its people,” said Vianey Reinhardt, LPC and VP of Business Development at Connections. “We know we must contribute to that.” That mindset has had everyone taking notice from Day 1. “I met [CEO] Awstin Gregg around the time when things were getting kicked off at their ribbon cutting with the Denton Chamber of Commerce. I could tell then that community was a high priority for them,” said Nathan Garcia, a member of the UNT Athletics corporate sponsorship team. UNT and Connections partnered up last year with a special Kick the Stigma program at UNT football games. “We’ve worked together quite a bit to help get people to realize that it’s okay to not be okay. It’s been a great partnership, and I couldn’t be more excited to have them in this community.” Ray David Jr., President of PointBank, and Lisa Cave, PointBank’s Branch Manager in Denton, agreed.

“A healthy community is a strong community, and many times, the most overlooked area is our mental wellness,” David said. “It’s simply not understood how much mental health affects everything else in our lives. “I have the wonderful memory of being there for the first meeting with Connections Wellness,” Cave said. “Everything they are doing now was just an idea in their mind that hadn’t come to fruition yet. To be in that conference room and to still be a part of that journey now is amazing. I’ve learned so much, and to watch them grow has been special.” Connections currently offers 4-hour programs per day for teens and adults that include a wide array of services in a packaged approach: Process groups, psycho-educational groups, experiential groups, psychiatric evaluations, nursing evaluations, and medication education. Their therapies include cognitive-behavioral, solutionfocused, dialectical behavior, motivational interviewing, cognitive processing, rational emotive behavior, SMART recovery, and many other services depending on the need. Making sure the school districts and other providers are aware of these services simply makes sense.

a godsend in today’s environment as students, teachers, parents, and administration do their best to navigate uncertain waters with the COVID-19 pandemic. “When times get tough, we come together to embrace mental health,” she said. “We want to make sure parents feel supported, kids feel supported, and even teachers feel supported. In fact, our entire office also has an air purification system, so it’s 100% purified.” He continued, “Our surgical staff are highly trained, and are committed to keeping our office spotless so patients can trust that they are going to be treated in a pristine environment.” And that is just the beginning of the care and concern Dr. Shillingburg has for his patients. He is a bona fide specialist, confident to perform even the most complicated of procedures and validated by the long list of his credentials: Board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon, trained and credentialed in dentoalveolar surgery, facial cosmetic surgery, implant surgery, orthognathic surgery, facial reconstructive oral surgery, and dental anesthesiology. In addition, he holds membership with the American Dental Association and is a Diplomate of both the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology and American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Regardless of the pain and discomfort a patient may be experiencing when they first present to Advanced Pain Institute of Texas, the doctors know they must inspire hope in order to restore health.

The educational aspect entails making the patient a partner in restoring and ultimately maintaining their health. The goal is to educate patients by explaining to them why they feel the way they do.

The journey to the founding of Advanced Pain Institute of Texas began with Dr. Anderson and Dr. Broadnax working together at a pain management facility in Chicago. Dr. Broadnax had already made his mark in the city. After graduating medical school at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and completing residency and fellowship at Harvard Medical School, he began practicing in Chicago and was elected to the Board of Directors of the Illinois Society of Interventional Pain Physician.

“It is so important to fully educate patients about the cause of their pain and to guide them through the treatment process in order to provide patients with the best opportunity to address their pain in a meaningful way,” said Riley Bingham, PA-C; the physician assistant at Advanced Pain Institute of Texas.

Dr. Anderson also began practicing in Chicago after completing the prestigious pain fellowship at Texas Tech University. He was quickly nominated for the “Chicago’s Top Doc” award and served on multiple committees of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians.

In other words, Dr. Anderson, Dr. Broadnax, and Ms. Bingham have a desire to spend one-on-one time consulting with patients so they can ultimately work toward the best treatment option for a great (and pain-free) quality of life. It is an approach that defines Advanced Pain Institute of Texas.

They had a vision for a practice that provided cutting- “Everything we do is for the patients. “We wanted to create a world-class interventional pain practice that would serve the needs of the community and have the ability to provide a meaningful impact in the lives of patients who otherwise might have some limited treatment options,” Dr. Broadnax said.

“We’ve come so far since we started working together in Chicago,” Dr. Anderson said. “ And we’ve continued moving forward ever since we opened the Advanced Pain Institute of Texas. It’s incredible when we take the time to realize just how far we have come and not only the impact we’ve made on the community, but the impact this community has made on us.”

The choice to begin that journey within the North Texas community was a natural one. Dr. Broadnax grew up in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, and Dr. Anderson grew to love Texas during his medical training here. The two physicians soon began the arduous task of building the practice and bringing the new clinic to fruition. Finally, in December 2017, the doors were ready to open.

Dr. Rebecca Butler was born and raised in Lubbock, a tenacious old West Texas town that boasted a post office just eight years after being established in 1876 in the northwest portion of the state. Lubbock was there to stay, spawning personalities such as famed rock-and-roller Buddy Holly. Butler stayed close to home, attending Texas Tech University. She graduated in 2002, remaining at Texas Tech until 2007 to complete her Doctorate of Medicine. She declared pediatrics when it was time to name her area of specialization. Making a decision about something that will chart your entire life, as well as the lives of those close to you, is a heavy responsibility. It was a natural affinity for children that pulled her toward the challenges of pediatrics. As a direct result, Dr. Butler spends her days surrounded by children at her Lantana Pediatrics Clinic, established in Lantana, Texas, in February, 2012. “Looking back, I know I couldn’t have made a better choice,” says Dr. Butler. “I love joking with children. I love talking with them and listening

to their perspectives on themselves and the things affecting their lives. I begin seeing most of my patients as infants, so I’m able to watch them develop and mature. “COVID-19 definitely had a variety of effects on us. We had to develop ways for patients to enter the clinic, be treated, and exit in a safe manner. It was our responsibility to help them feel comfortable. Our clientele dropped off for a while but, now, we are again seeing new patients on a daily basis. That’s exciting.” Gus, Dr. Butler’s husband, manages the business side of the practice. “Plans are to add another physician by the first of 2021,” explains Dr. Butler. “Our goal is to grow with our community.” There’s a sense of continuity in pediatrics. Dr. Butler’s cut-off age is between 18 and 20, giving her plenty of time to form close connections with most of her patients. An added bonus is that some of those patients now have children of their own and Dr. Butler is their pediatrician as well.

Asking for help with hearing loss can bring about plenty of mixed emotions. On one hand, you can tell things aren’t as they should be: you’re turning up the TV just a few extra notches at home, and you can’t follow conversations in noisy conference rooms or restaurants. It’s frustrating, but you shudder at the thought of wearing a clunky hearing aid and being looked at differently by your family and peers. At Family Hearing Practice, Dr. Allison Liberio understands that living with these challenges isn’t fair. But with the right care and equipment, she believes her patients can have both their hearing and sense of self restored. “My patients are generally happy and healthy people — they just can’t hear as well as they used to,” Dr. Liberio said. “They are looking for a little bit of help that’s not obvious or awkward, and I enjoy watching that transformation happen.” Dr. Liberio is a licensed audiologist and has been serving the Flower Mound area for the past five years. The ABC’s OF Giving

The word “service” means different things to different people. But for Dennis and Jennifer Jenkins of ABC Home and Commercial Services of DFW, the definition of that single word is significantly broader than it is for most people. ABC appeared on the scene in San Antonio in 1949. Dennis’ parents, Bob and Sandy Jenkins, purchased the company in 1965. They worked hard at growing their new business while working equally as hard at teaching their three sons the intricacies of inheriting and preserving both legacy and tradition. They wanted Bobby, Raleigh, and Dennis to understand “service” meant the work they do for their customers as well as the “service” they give back to their communities. All three sons followed in their father’s footsteps to Texas A&M University, and all three shouldered a portion of the family business. They learned straight from their dad how to

keep the endless varieties of swarming, stinging, biting, and just plain nasty varmints out of Texas homes and yards. Dennis has controlled the “undesirables” in the DFW area for 30 years. Bobby does the same thing in Austin, and Raleigh in Houston. Each brother oversees a strictly defined territory, and each operates according to what the Jenkins family refers to as the 11th Commandment: “Thou shalt NOT cross thy brothers’ territory.” It’s never been broken during the last three decades.

For some, the words “tattoo studio” might conjure up images of a dreary hole-in-the-wall place. You enter, and the tattooist points to a few numbered sample tattoos on the wall that you may choose from. Not so at Dark Age Tattoo Studio. Beginning with the front room, its red sofas with gilded gold trim, chandeliers, and distinctive paintings create an atmosphere that compliments the artistry you’re about to see. Owners Rember Orellana and Francisco Sanchez, both tattoo artists themselves, teamed up and opened Dark Age Tattoo Studio on the Denton Square in 2014. Kelly Graff, first a customer of Rember’s, soon joined the fledgling group and is now their general manager. Since then, Dark Age has become internationally known for its artistry. They see clients from all over the world,

and some of their loyal patrons include local professional sports figures, musicians, even mainstream doctors and teachers. Presently, there are 21 artists and six apprentices, but that number seems to increase every year. Only those having the best artistic skills earn the right to be part of the group, and each one specializes in specific styles of tattoo art. Kelly explained, “There are, for example, styles like traditional and neo-traditional, realism, script, new school, and patriotic.” She further explains, “The fact that we have so many artists all

devoting themselves to different styles gives us the versatility to satisfy any request a client might have.” “Rember, Francisco, and I encourage our artists to improve artistically because we want them to succeed,” Kelly acknowledged. Additional support for their staff is provided through weekly art classes, and the artists often attend seminars. Well-known artists are brought in throughout the year to further generate inspiration. Every tattoo is customized, so the process begins with the artist meeting with the client to discuss their vision. The artist puts that vision to paper, and no actual tattoo work begins until both the client and the artist are happy. The walls of Dark Age Tattoo Studio are filled with numerous awards for excellence from around the country, including Best of Denton County two years in a row. Animal shelters are forced to cope with excessive animal intake through euthanasia. The Texas Coalition for Animal Protection knows that this problem is rooted in pet overpopulation and this is where they focus on making a difference.

The Lash Lounge has made a splash in the community over the last few years, and leading the charge is owner Yvonne Hemphill. Seven years ago a client sheepishly approached Jesse James Leyva, Owner of Jesse James Fit in Flower Mound TX. to ask a favor. Inside JJF there is a large wall, growing each year full of client photos who had competed in various bodybuilding and fitness shows. The pictures were for everyone to see – like a wall of fame – and the men and women in them were sculpted from head to toe. Everyone loved the display. This particular client wanted to be a part of it. “I remember them asking, ‘I don’t want to do a show, but it’s a goal of mine to get on that wall!’”. “You don’t have to be a competitor to get on the wall and I thought it was an awesome idea.” replied Leyva. It has become a safe place for many people.” Leyva’s passion for health and fitness began with him taking a heavy interest in bodybuilding even earning the title Mr Texas in 2010. He has also been candid about the fact he grew up the son of a single mom in a poor family from Los Angeles. He eventually moved to Texas to open his first gym Nu Body Gym & Tan then Texas Sports Club. Leyva had always instilled passion, discipline, hard work and dedication into each of his clients. Working with people towards meeting their goals and self betterment with amazing retention as a personal trainer he used his strengths and passion to create Jesse James Fit in 2007. At the heart of his new venture was individualized training with a focus on family fitness. Unlike big box gyms, everyone at Jesse James Fit is paired with a trainer. Those trainers share the same core values that Leyva has, and they are in it for the long haul. Some trainers even left corporate America to pursue their passion and make a career in fitness. When Jay Marks met with his real estate team in January to map out their plans for the year, he, like so many Denton County business owners, believed 2020 would be another big year. “We had a pretty powerful meeting that day,” Jay said.
