Holidays REFLECTIONS
& FRIENDS
A
s I sat at the kitchen table to go over a few lastminute details before giving the OK to publish this month’s issue, I couldn’t help but peer over at my husband, Scott. We were in Utah celebrating his 50th birthday and had just finished a big meal with friends and family. He had this huge smile on his face — like a kid in a candy store. “What are you smiling about?” I asked with a laugh. “It was just a really good night,” he said. “Now we’re both hard at work again.” We were just kids when we got married and started our publishing journey all those years ago. And I can’t tell you how many times this same scenario played out where one or the both of us would be burning the midnight oil at the last minute, desperately trying to make sure everything was perfect before going to press. I wouldn’t change any of it. And neither would Scott. I bring this up because, well, it’s the holiday season, and I’m feeling extra grateful. I’m grateful for my 50-year-old hubby, who has been the best business partner I could ask for — and an even better husband and father. I’m also grateful for the friends and family who refuse to miss a single celebration. No matter how busy we all get with “life,” we never let anything get in the way of holiday traditions. Lastly, I’m grateful for the ability to reflect on so many great memories. It’s been a fun ride, and the best part is that it is far from over.

Ask The Expert: Fitness
WORKOUT smarter by Jesse J. Leyva, Owner of Outlaw Fitcamp
All workouts were not created equally. Sadly, many people simply waste time in the gym.
rule of thumb never use the same routine for more than 4 weeks and always keep it challenging.
Here are 5 tips to ensure that every minute of your workout is well spent burning fat and toning your muscles…
WORKOUT SMARTER TIP 3: Never Skip
WORKOUT SMARTER TIP 1: Use More Resistance In order to get the most from each rep, it’s important to challenge your muscles, and not simply go through the motions. If you are able to complete 15 repetitions easily, then the weight is too light. On the flip side, if you aren’t able to perform an exercise through its full range of motion, and find yourself cheating on form, then the weight is too heavy. The correct weights will feel challenging by your last few repetitions but won’t force you to sacrifice form. WORKOUT SMARTER TIP 2: Keep it Fresh You may have noticed that most people do the same exercises each time they visit the gym. Maybe you’ve been doing the same exercise routine as long as you can remember—if it isn’t broken then don’t fix it, right? The truth is that exercise routines have expiration dates, and that is the date that they begin to lose their effectiveness. As a
the Warm-Up
Most people consider warm-up time to be wasted time—they’d rather jump right into the heart of the routine. What they don’t realize is that a good warm-up will allow you to perform at a higher intensity, which means greater results. The point of a warm-up is to increase your muscle temperature. This increases blood flow, muscle contraction and reduces muscle resistance. Your warm-up should last 5-10 minutes.
see fewer results. It makes sense, doesn’t it? Why rush to the gym if no one is there waiting for you? Why push yourself if no one is watching? The best way to avoid injury and to see results is to work with a dedicated personal trainer. The Outlaw FitCamp team is passionate about seeing clients achieve results by working out smart and without wasting time, energy, and effort on mistakes. Don’t know where to start when it comes to exercise? Let us help you!
WORKOUT SMARTER TIP 4: Focus on Proper Form Gyms are filled with people performing exercises with bad form. The two biggest reasons are that you aren’t concentrating on the exercise, or you’re trying to lift a weight that is too heavy. Lifting with improper form almost always results in injury. Take the time to achieve proper form, and by doing so you’ll avoid injury and will reap the full benefit from each exercise. WORKOUT SMARTER TIP 5: Together is better People who exercise alone are less challenged, less accountable and typically

urt Conner first picked up a guitar at age ten and never put it down. His love for guitars and expertise to give a creative touch to them is what makes him popular in the town. From serving in the U.S. Navy to leaving a successful 30-year long marketing job and finally spending full time on what he loves, the artistic journey of this Flower Mound aesthete is as inspiring as his artworks. Kurt’s talent combines his two greatest interests, guitars, and art, to create magnificent customized guitars. “Too many guitars look alike. I’m trying to change that for one person at a time,” he says. The artist grew up in Indiana, served four years in the U.S. Navy, and graduated from John Herron School of Art with a BFA in Visual Communications & Photography. “I like to say that I am literally a product of art – for my parents first met at, and graduated from, that very same art school,” he shared. After 30 years of creating and marketing products for other entities, the musician and songwriter finally chose to listen to his inner voice and do it for himself, three years ago. “My trigger was when I realized how short life is and that I wasn’t doing what made me happy. And that I was not effectively leveraging my true interests, knowledge, and skills to my benefit,” he said. He formed Conner Guitart, Guitart being a combined term for guitar and art. Conner Guitart is a one-person studio that offers unique, custom, and functional guitar/art solutions.” My goal is to 14 | FLOWER MOUND TOWN LIFE | DECEMBER 2021

promote the appreciation, creation, and sharing of music through ART with the guitar as a central and consistent theme,” Kurt shared. Guitart is about uniqueness and personalization focused on players, collectors, and anyone who loves guitars and art. “I believe that between the mass producers and the master luthiers lies immense opportunity to create and offer quality guitar/art solutions as unique as you are and the music you create and appreciate,” he added. The pandemic was also a catalyst driver, as he knew it was a time for reinvention. During the pandemic, he created 12 original guitar directions, honed his business model, and created all the branding, photography, copy, and content for his website connerguitart.com. “When I
designers, shares information, experiences, and practices with other artists and organizations in the area. Conner Guitart was recently chosen to show some of the artworks at Flower Mound Town Hall. The exhibition has received great reviews from the public. The work will be displayed through the holidays into January. He aims to promote interest in music, guitars, and art and wants to continue creating guitars as unique as the people who play them. One motto that drives him to move ahead is - “The best thing I’ve ever done will be the next thing I do.” “I’d like to bolster and salute all those, faced with new challenges, who are finding new and effective ways to reinvent themselves,” Kurt added. Millions of guitars and millions of musicians, Guitart is on a mission to enhance their existence so that you want your guitar upfront and on your wall. You need it on your wall visible, accessible, ever-present, and something you love to interact with daily - like a grand piano in your living room.
decided to make this change, I found that I knew much more than I thought I did. So I objectively combined my knowledge, capabilities, interests, and loves into one collective effort and redirect them in my favor,” he mentioned. “All that I have ever learned and experienced is contributing to this effort/change.”
It usually takes him 3 to 6 months to build a guitar. At any given moment, he has 3 to 6 pieces at different stages of completion. Beyond guitars, Kurt has won awards in creative direction, design, illustration, photography, sculpture, and writing. Kurt has lived in Flower Mound for over 20 years. he holiday season is often an opportune time for crime. The Denton County Sheriff’s Office urges you to take special safety precautions during this holiday season. If you are traveling or away from your home, leave some lights on or consider an automatic timer for your lights. It’s always a good idea as a neighbor to watch your home or park in the driveway if you are going to be away for a while. Also, make sure to keep wrapped gifts out of sight.

If you are out shopping, stay alert and aware of what’s going on around you. Park in a well-lighted area, lock your car and hide shopping bags or gifts in the trunk. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash while you are out. Whenever possible, walk to your car with someone or ask a security officer or store employee to walk with you after dark. Criminals sometimes pose as couriers delivering gifts. If you are expecting
packages to arrive, monitor when your
packages are expected to arrive. Don’t let
your packages sit for criminals to see. Talk to your neighbors or have your packages delivered to an alternate address if you are not going to be home.
The holidays are a time of celebration. Drinking and driving is a danger to
everyone on the road. If you choose to
drink during your holiday celebrations, don’t drive! Have a designated driver or have an Uber or other service drive you home. Have fun, but celebrate responsibly. he entrepreneurial spirit of the American people is responsible for this country’s strong, diverse economic development, with the local family-owned business functioning as the backbone of the overall economy. According to the SBA, small businesses account for 44% of all activity in the United States, create two-thirds of the new jobs, and deliver 43.5% of the United States’ GDP. In 2021, a new local business opens every five to eight minutes of every business day, with a range of diversity that’s mindboggling. Food, especially fast food, is still a primary focus but convenience stores and professional services are also high on the list. That entrepreneurial spirit was the driving force behind the Baird family – husband Todd, wife Lori, and son Eric – launching their Fully Promoted franchise in Flower Mound in January 2021.

and promotional products firm supporting businesses and groups with their brand marketing and events. Their goal is to develop custom-tailored solutions to enhance their clients’ brand awareness, increase customer and employee retention, and market share. “I had a successful, 32-year career in sales and marketing,” Todd explained. “Our firm represented over 1,000 client brands, which provided me with a well-developed skill set that I wanted to continue to utilize after I retired in 2018.”
Internal branding contributes directly to engagement, morale, and retention and, in turn, the health of these attributes impacts the efficacy of the product or service being provided by the firm.
Lori, a retired educator, is focused on creative and product sourcing for the business. Eric and his wife, who had relocated out of state for work, were eager to get back to the DFW area. Starting Fully Promoted Flower Mound served as the perfect opportunity for them to return home. Today, Eric handles the production and social media aspects of the business. “Lori and I spent 18-months doing ‘retired stuff’ that we never had a chance to do over the course of our careers,” Todd said. “With all that done, we started thinking about going back to work and talking about branded apparel, promoting other peoples’ products in a B2B environment. One thing we all three share is our passion for our community of Flower Mound. After 20 wonderful years of living here, it seemed only right to plant our business flag here. We felt it would also increase our vested interest in the business.” The Bairds found a home with Fully Promoted. “The Fully Promoted family has equipped us with the tools and capabilities to provide services to local businesses within our community as well as to large enterprises that stretch across the globe,” Eric said. “Many people think of branding as an external element primarily designed to attract customers to a business. That’s true but I also believe internal branding is an equally important success driver in any given firm,” Todd explained. “Internal branding contributes directly to engagement, morale, and retention and, in turn, the health of these attributes impacts the efficacy of the product or service being provided by the firm. “Corporate America is moving more and more in a work-at-home direction, but leaders must still find solutions to promote mission, vision, and values. Branded apparel and products, when done effectively, enhance a client’s culture internally and externally. “We specialize in large quantity, custom embroidery, ranging from sports apparel to corporate wear for a large event or conference. finding a specific product and customizing it. “Our main challenge was to figure out how to set our work apart from our competitors. Our answer was to differentiate ourselves through our customer service and the quality of products. “
“Our job is to make certain our clients are recognized for who they are and for what they do.”
“With access to over 700,000 different items, we are able to provide customized solutions to our clients across various industries such as healthcare, construction, and education,” Lori said. “The branded products industry is looking at a double-digit percent annual growth curve. Our customers expect us to help them grow their own customers. They can do that only if we make sure they’re noticed, thought of positively, and remembered favorably.

Her journey started at age 3 in gymnastics at the Arlington gym where her mother was coaching. In the years after moving to Highland Village, she went to Excite, Denton Gymnastics Academy, U.S. Gold, Southlake Gymnastics, and for the past three years at Flower Mound’s WinKids. “Mentally, I think I’ve been the happiest at WinKids,” she said. “Jack Lee is my coach. He’s really good at knowing when to push me. He’s been really helpful. Gymnasts can get some mental blocks. When I came to WinKids, he helped me overcome that.”

ver since she can remember, Meredith Wells has participated in multiple activities to stay busy. It started with gymnastics, then basketball, diving, volleyball, softball, cheerleading, and most recently, learning how to fly private airplanes.
So when it came time to choose a college to attend and which activities to partake in, the senior at Lewisville’s Founders Classical Academy decided on Baylor University. She signed a letter of intent to join Coach Felecia Mulkey’s six-time champion acrobatics and tumbling team. “It is so very exciting to be able to receive a scholarship for something that I love to do,” she said. “Throughout my whole life, I have worked so hard to get to where I am now, and I could not be prouder of myself for overcoming the obstacles that have been thrown my way.” Baylor was the third school she visited after Fairmont State University in West Virginia during spring break and Oklahoma State University in August. It was during her OSU tour in early August that she received a text from Baylor. Since she had been attending acrobatics and tumbling summer camps in Waco for about five years, she was quite familiar with everything and everyone there. “I told my mom while at OSU that ‘I think I’m just going to go here,” she said. “It www.LiveLocalMagazines.com
just makes sense. It’s close, I really like the campus.’ Ten minutes later, I got a text from Baylor. “At Baylor camp this year, I asked assistant coach Alia Nolan if there’s was a spot available for me for next year, and then
the other assistant Kelsey Rowell came up and said, ‘we would never discount you.’ It made me feel good.” “Out of all of the schools except for the cost, Baylor made the most sense. One of the big things that mean a lot to me is having good coaches who really care, and I found them at Baylor. I know a lot of the athletes at Baylor from being at the camps, and they are all super friendly. For me, it was the whole package.” Though Baylor has an aviation program, she plans to major in nutrition. However, she still might go into flying as a career. serving as the school’s assistant athletic director.
Wells began playing basketball between fourth and fifth grade and also competed in diving for 18 months with the national champion CG Divers in Southlake in 2014. At Founders, Wells captains the basketball and cheer teams and is a member of the Lynx Science Honors Club, Eagle Leaders service club, and National Honor Society. At Founders, she is a straight-A student with perfect attendance. Wells said her biggest success has been a second-place at nationals in trampoline with WinKids and as a member of two national cheer champions, including last April. With her college decision done, Wells can concentrate on doing her best in all her senior year activities. “Before I decided on Baylor, I was sending emails and texts to all sorts of coaches, and now I’m just hanging out,” she said. “The whole process between them and other schools where I was asking them, and Baylor was saying ‘we want you’ made the difference.”

Shop Local SUCCESS by Caylie Howard | photos courtesy of Shop Local Flower Mound facebook page
Shopping local and supporting local small businesses is so important, especially with the recent pandemic and the holidays approaching. Showing support for your local community is such a big part of the success of our county. When you shop locally, you get the personal feeling that you don’t get at bigger shops. When you walk in the door, you see your neighbors, friends, and family, and you know that you’re helping to keep the community thriving.

W
ell, fellow Flower Mounders... we’ve been waiting a long time for this moment and we are so happy to report that the first restaurant located in the River Walk at Central Park here in Flower Mound is officially open! And we couldn’t think of a more perfect restaurant than Sfereco to be the inaugural restaurant in this long-awaited development. Sfereco was created by Refined Hospitality Concepts, who own The Statler hotel in Dallas. In fact, the first Sfereco location is inside of The Statler. You probably heard about their second location opening in Old Town Lewisville a few weeks ago. And now we’re honored to have their third location right here in Flower Mound. When you visit Sfereco, think “Spaghetti Western.” It’s classic Italian food with a
little bit of a Texas twist. And that unique concept is all thanks to RHC’s owner, Robert Hall and their Corporate Executive Chef, Jason Tilmann. So, what does a “Spaghetti Western” menu look like? Think menu items like Brisket Meatballs, their version of a Supreme pizza called the 6 Shooter, and an Italian-style chicken fried steak which is a ribeye topped with meatballs, broccolini, and a mozzarella salad. But Sfereco has a lot of traditional Italian dishes on the menu as well including an incredible eggplant parmesan, shrimp scampi, calzones, and lots of delicious pizzas. Sfereco also has a full bar where they have some great signature cocktails, wines,
beers, and frozen drinks. Visit them for Happy Hour Monday-Friday from 11:00am7:00pm to enjoy some of their Happy Hour beers, frozens, and House chardonnay and cabernet by the glass.
As you can tell, Sfereco came to play. And like we mentioned, we couldn’t imagine a better first restaurant to open its doors in the River Walk. So, make your reservation to visit Sfereco as soon as possible! (They are asking for reservations, especially when they’re first open.) Enjoy the ambiance of looking out over the water, combined with Sfereco’s incredible food. Sounds like a recipe for success to us! 4120 River Walk Dr. Flower Mound, TX 75028 469.993.1201

MANTELS by Caylie Howard
With stockings hung by the chimney with care, it’s safe to say that the mantel is a centerpiece for all things Christmas décor. There are so many different ways and styles to make your mantel merry and bright this holiday season. A staple in all things Christmas decorating is the classic holiday garland. There are so many different types of garland to choose from. No matter what is in your color wheel for the holidays this year, you can be sure that there is a garland that will fit perfectly into your theme. Garland is commonly used to be wrapped around your banisters, however, it’s also

a fantastic way to spruce up your mantel and bring the spirit of Christmas to the room. Having the festive Christmas garland as your base of mantel décor really helps to add dimension to your display. By adding differently sized and shaped décors such as elves, trees, nutcrackers, ornaments, and candles, you bring a bright and joyful essence to your space. One fun way to dress up your mantel is by adding lighted garland. This is a great option to add ambiance to the room in the evening. With the lights shining from your festive mantel as you relax by the fire watching your favorite Christmas movie,
you are sure to truly feel the spirit of Christmas. Having a jolly and joyful holiday mantel truly helps to tie your holiday space together. And with holiday garland, you’re sure to impress with your merry mantel this Christmas season. But no matter how you choose to decorate your mantel this Christmas, remember to give, love, and be thankful for the year’s blessings with your family and friends during this Christmas season. Have a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

In today’s day and age, we are becoming more and more focused and committed to teaching the young people of today to be accepting and inclusive of everyone. That’s why having the gift of Miracle League, and all that Miracle League represents, come to Flower Mound is such a huge step for our local community.
www.LiveLocalMagazines.com
The very first Miracle League began in Georgia in April of 2000 as a way to give people of all ages with special needs the opportunity to get out of the stands and onto the baseball field. “We’ve got kids that have siblings that play baseball. They’ve grown up watching them play the game. Now the tables have turned and they’re the ones that are playing and their siblings are cheering them on,” Jeff Fisher, Executive Director of Miracle League North Texas, said.
The town of Flower Mound had its first Miracle League season in the fall. “We were only expecting about 20 kids or so, but we ended up starting with 43. It blew our expectations out of the water. We never closed registration, so we ended up finishing the season with 57 kids,” Jeff said. By word of mouth, Miracle League in Flower Mound spread like wildfire. “We ended up adding a whole new team at the end of the season because of how many players we had,” Jeff said.
On that opening day in 2000, the rosters had grown to more than 120 eager and excited players. And just like that, the wonderful gift of Miracle League spread across the country. Currently, there are 320 active Miracle League organizations including in places such as Puerto Rico,
Miracle League North Texas in Flower Mound found its home at Baker’s Field Park on one of their softball fields. However, Jeff noticed that the kids in wheelchairs didn’t have the easiest time on the traditional fields. “We’re hoping by the fall of 2022, we will have raised
“We’re always looking for players,” Jeff said. “It doesn’t matter how old you are. We are all about being inclusive. We want you to come out and have fun.”

support of the Flower Mound Youth Sports Association (FMYSA) and the Town of Flower Mound. “They have both been so incredibly supportive,” Jeff said. Miracle League of North Texas’ mission statement is to provide children and young adults the opportunity to play baseball regardless of their abilities. “The most rewarding part of all of this is getting to see the smiles and pure joy on these kids’ faces,” Jeff said. And thanks to the help of the staff, volunteers, along with everyone who has had a hand in Making Miracle League a success, it’s looking like Miracle League will be creating that joy for many years to come. miracleleaguentx.com 214.923.4421

able Breeze stood out from other youngsters for two reasons. First was by virtue of her pretty, lyrical name. The second was by the way she always answered the age-old question posed to children by adults. “What do you want to be when you grow up?” asked aunts, uncles, cousins, and family friends.
54 | FLOWER MOUND TOWN LIFE | DECEMBER 2021
www.LiveLocalMagazines.com
With wide-open, candid eyes, Sable consistently responded, “I want to be a superstar.” There was something about the tilt of her head and the lift of her chin that underlined her answer, giving it an air of valid confidence. Sable’s parents never blinked when they heard their daughter’s answer. Instead, using that wordless and magical language between parent and child, they gave their silent pledge to support every step of her journey. “There is absolutely nothing I could have ever done to deserve the kindness and generosity of my parents,” Sable, 25, of Flower Mound, said with obvious gratitude. “They are always there, no questions asked, and no answers needed.” “It’s like I always knew there were songs inside of me. I knew I needed to write them and to sing them. I needed to do that not to just become a superstar, but to help people through their own difficult and troubled times.” Sable grew up listening to different types of music, developing an appreciative ear for all genres. “I think I’m the product of a lot of blending,” she said. “There’s folk, pop, country, and classic rock. For me, all the influences came together into what I refer to as mellow pop. I write all my songs and accompany them with a ukulele, an acoustic guitar, or an electric guitar. I choose whatever instrument best fits the mood of the song. The result is my music is more chill and more laid back than the style of other pop artists. I think it would be accurate to say I have a quieter pop style.” “I bought my first instruments when I was 17, after saving enough money from the retail jobs I worked. I taught myself to play them through YouTube.” Sable learned early that just being good at something isn’t enough to achieve superstardom. There’s also the process of letting other people see your talent. It’s called marketing and, sometimes, it can be the most difficult part of the journey. In January of 2019, a series of unplanned steps landed Sable in T’s Bar and Grill in Lewisville, where she met musicians J.C. Scars and Tim Naylor. “Soon after we met, J.C. introduced me to James Greenlee, who owns Vetted Studios. Our personalities clicked and we started working together to record and produce my songs. Tim, who’s an accomplished guitarist, played lead guitar for my single Not Afraid.” Sable has released three EPs this year. An extended play recording typically has fewer tracks than a long play or LP. “They’re both pricey and time-consuming to put together,” she continued. “After that, the next step is to have them picked up and released by major online streaming networks.” Most of my growth as an artist has come through live www.LiveLocalMagazines.com

It’s also called work, but I love every minute of the effort. “I play a lot of gigs throughout Denton, Lewisville, Flower Mound, and all points in-between. This is my main source of income and provides the money to finance everything else that goes into the process.” “I also devote a lot of time to maintaining a social media presence. It’s critical that I keep my schedule current and in front of people, letting them know where I’ll perform and when. It’s one of my most effective ways to advertise.” The question of “What do you want to be when you grow up” changes with the passage of time. Frequently, it becomes, “Where do you see yourself in five years?” “I’ll be 30 years old,” Sable answered, “and much closer to where I wanted to be when I was five. I’ll be more successful than I am today, and that success will include inspiring others through my music.”

t’s not uncommon for people to fall on hard times, especially in the last two years. No matter what the circumstances may be, the struggle is still the same. In times of need, it can be difficult for people to reach out and ask for help for themselves and their family. Many people have a fear of being judged or being looked down upon simply because of their difficult situations. At Heart of the City, they truly do care for the people of their community and they make it their mission to treat every person that walks through their doors as a valued member of society.

these people are in and better their lives. “Heart of the City is a big umbrella and under that are three different major programs. One is the Farmers Market Food Pantry, the second is Graham’s
Totally Free Clothing, and the third part is called Thrive where we do life skills coaching.” Rob Veal, President and CEO of Heart of the City, said.

Heart of the City truly does try to meet all of the community’s needs. They offer food supply, clothing, and life counseling on how to get out of the situation these people are in and better their lives. Heart of the City was born in 2019 and the nonprofit just celebrated 2 years of giving quality help service to the community in need. However, the idea of Heart of the City came to be in 2009. “It took me, personally, about 10 years to be able to get into a position where I had the time to do this. So in January of 2019 I stood in front our church and said, ‘God’s leading me to start this and I need two people to help’ and a couple of senior adults in their seventies say ‘we’ll plug in and help’,” Rob said. The first thing that Heart of the City did was hold a free clothing giveaway. “Everyone has extra clothes in their closets, so everyone brought clothes and we gave them to the community and that’s how we began to establish links in the community,” Rob said.
A couple of months after their free clothing giveaway, the nonprofit began to raise funds for an office expansion. “In four different dinners we raise $42,000 to remodel our building and make the food pantry,” Rob said. “October 28th, 2019 was our first day to serve,” Rob said. The goal for the Farmers Market Food Pantry was to serve around 200 to 300 families a month. But then COVID hit. “The whole world shut down, but we never did. We actually reprogrammed everything and started serving at people’s cars, and when we did that, we serving an excess of 250 families every Saturday. We exponentially grew,” Rob said. www.LiveLocalMagazines.com
Heart of the City has designed their facility to make each person that walks through their door feel like they are getting a true, high end shopping experience. When you step into the Farmers Market Food Pantry, you truly feel like you are walking through a grocery store. When you walk through the Door of Hope in Graham’s Totally Free Clothing, you feel as if you are strolling through a local boutique. Every experience you have at Heart of the City is made to make you feel valued and important, which is just one of the things that make Heart of the City such a special part of our community.
