Women’s Health

HAS NEVER BEEN MORE

IMPORTANT

I

read somewhere recently that women are the cornerstone of a family’s overall health. Needless to say, ensuring they have access to quality healthcare can lead to improved health for children and families. From pregnancy and childbirth to staying on top of breast cancer screenings, heart disease, osteoporosis, and even menopause, women’s health is a massive undertaking and something all of us — men included — should take very seriously. In the meantime, I thought I’d share a few inspiring quotes from women that relate to this topic. These quotes were pulled from various sources on the Internet. “Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself.” – Coco Chanel “I appreciate healthcare that gets to the root cause of our symptoms and promotes wellness, rather than the onesize-fits-all drug-based approach to treating disease. I love maintaining an optimal quality of life - naturally.” – Suzanne Somers “You always have to remember to take of yourself, first and foremost. Because when you stop taking care of yourself, you get out of balance and you really forget how to take care of others.” – Jada Pinkett Smith “A woman is like a tea bag — you never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water.” – Eleanor Roosevelt “As I see it, every day you do one of two things: build health or produce disease in yourself.” – Adelle Davis

by Diane Ciarloni | photos courtesy of Dr. Javaria Jabeen

r. Javaria Jabeen says life is short and there’s not a moment to waste. She believes, as well as lives, every word of that sentiment. Dr. Jabeen was 15 when she moved to the United States. She graduated high school in New Jersey and entered college to become a primary care family physician.

She chose to pursue certification as a DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) rather than an MD (Doctor of Allopathic Medicine).

I almost panicked. How could I do it with a big belly and walking like a penguin? The answer, I learned, was having a great staff.”

“Becoming a DO meant approximately 200 hours of additional study,” Dr. Jabeen explained. “A DO focuses on the entire person – mind, body, and spirit - to prevent injury or illness in the first place, rather than simply treat the symptoms after the problem occurs. That’s what I wanted as my focus, and it’s also why I evaluate a patient from head-to-toe. I want to treat everything, and not rely so heavily on a prescription pad.

She did it and, a few years later, the next ripple surfaced. “I began a full line of aesthetic services six years ago. Today, that part of the YZ Healthcare practice is rebranded as RIA Aesthetics. We treat and improve the physical appearance of the body, but we also address overall wellness with, for example, our IV drip therapies for immune health, energy, depression, anxiety, cognitive function, and more.”

“Family is very important to me, which is why I wanted to be a family doctor.” Dr. Jabeen decided early on to establish her own practice rather than work for someone else.

The most successful of Dr. Jabeen’s career circles bobbed up in 2016, when she became the Medical Director for Renew Medical Weight Loss.

“I want to be the one to determine how much time I devote to my patients,” she said. “I was less than 30 years old and pregnant with my twins when I opened my medical practice in Flower Mound.

Dr. Jabeen’s frequent expansion into new challenges pushed her 2,000 square foot practice space beyond its limits. She’s now scheduled for a September relocation to the former Cloud 9 Salon, with 8,500 square feet.

rit Stock was in his mid-30s and living in Lewisville in 2008, arriving there via St. Louis, Missouri, and McAllen, Texas. Less than 10-miles away in the Colony, using Highway 121, was Vanessa Hugo. Vanessa, also in her mid-30s, arrived in Texas via her home state of California. Both Brit and Vanessa were single with no serious prospects. That was a problem because both were ready to marry and to start families. “Meeting people – the right kind of people – isn’t always easy,” Brit recalled. “There’s work. There’s church.” That’s about it, especially if you’re not the type to hang out at bars or loiter in the frozen foods section of Albertson’s or Kroger. Brit decided to give love a nudge and enrolled in an online dating service. Luckily, Vanessa made the same decision at about the same time. They met in 2008 and started dating. They made each other happy and married in 2010. They moved to Flower Mound and had their daughter Elyse, who is about to be 10. Was using the dating service the right choice? “Yes, it was for us,” Brit said. “I know it’s not for everyone, but, as I said, it definitely worked for us.” The Stock family is in love with Flower Mound, expressing that love by giving back of themselves. “I learned by example what it meant to support your community,” Brit explained. “My parents were always doing something, especially if children were involved. They helped to send blind kids to camp. They helped children afflicted with muscular dystrophy.

14 | FLOWER MOUND TOWN LIFE | SEPTEMBER 2021

“My dad was also very sports-minded. We played everything there was, and he was often our coach. We learned the importance, and the rewards, of giving back by watching them. Hopefully, the same thing is happening with Elyse. I don’t think it’s so much teaching a kid as it is showing them.” Brit works for DFW airport, and Vanessa is employed by a financial institution. It’s before and after those hours when the extracurricular activities kick in.

“Vanessa was very involved with Keep Flower Mound Beautiful during our early years here,” Brit explained. “I’m guided mainly by Elyse. This is a fantastic place to raise a child, and I want to be involved in whatever affects my daughter. Making the community’s life better also improves her life.

“She plays soccer, and I’ve coached for six years. She came home recently with a flyer about Lacrosse and said she wanted to play. We said fine. I think she’ll enjoy playing something that I don’t coach! Lacrosse is a sport that’s just starting here, and I’m happy to help it grow. “Like my dad, I’m a big believer in kids’ sports. My grandmother used to tell him he had us doing too much in sports as kids. Tragically, my 16-yearold cousin died from a drug overdose. That’s when my grandmother changed her mind, telling my dad there probably should have been more sports involvement in my cousin’s life.”

Brit was previously president of a neighborhood HOA association, which provided him with a great deal of SEPTEMBER 2021 | FLOWER MOUND TOWN LIFE | 15

and she’s also the one who steps in and tells me those few times when I need to say no to something. I may be the one out front, but she has my back.

“A great deal of hands-on time is invested in Summit Club activities. We have pancake breakfasts, work with the police, raise money

for two NCTC scholarships for Flower Mound students, sponsor Christmas events, and a lot more. I had a good friend who once

counseled me on how I could do so much more. He said my reward

would be special moments, here and there, that would go straight to my heart. A local elementary school put a call out for mentors, and I

thought it could be a source for some of those special moments. We gave awards to all the kids at the end of the program; things such

as Best Smile, Most Upbeat, and so on. One of my kids was in line to receive his award, and I saw him looking around. I realized he had

no parents there and then, he saw me. Suddenly, a big grin lit up his face. Believe me, that was definitely a special moment, and it went

straight to my heart. Who knows? That one thing may help to build a better man and a stronger community member. “I’ll take all of those moments I can get and be grateful for each one.”

important for women’s physical wellbeing, why it’s so important as you age, how it

helps you stay lean and healthy, and how it increases weight loss. We believe that

weight lifting is a key component of every woman’s weight loss.

Losing muscle mass is one of the main

reasons women gain weight as they age Unless you do something to combat it,

most women naturally gain weight as they age. Everyone loses muscle mass as they

get older, beginning in their 30s. Since muscle burns calories so efficiently, this loss of muscle slows down your metabolism. And because women start out with less muscle mass than men, this slowed down metabolism causes weight gain more readily. The average female gains around 20 to 25 pounds of fat between the ages of 20 and 50. And unfortunately, it gets worse as you get older. After middle age, the average adult loses 3% of their muscle mass every year. But there’s something you can do!

In other words, when cardio is the only

part of your workout routine, you’re going your routine helps you gain muscle and lose more fat.

In one study at Tufts University, 10

overweight women were put on the same diet. Half of them lifted heavy

weights at the same time. At the end of the study, both groups had lost around

13 pounds. But while the diet-only group lost 9.2 pounds of fat, the group who

added weight lifting lost 14.6 pounds

of fat and gained 1.4 pounds of muscle.

This same 13-pound weight loss resulted in a much trimmer body for the weight lifting group.

The beauty of weight lifting is that as you lose fat and gain muscle, you typically

lose inches from your waistline even if you don’t see a change on the scale.

Muscle mass supports increased and long-lasting weight loss

Muscles are metabolically efficient and promote weight loss by burning more

calories—even at rest. When you increase muscle, you increase your metabolism.

your workout, your body continues to burn calories.

Weight lifting helps women slim down as they trade fat for lean muscle

Despite an old misconception, weight lifting will not bulk up women. Even

though women will build muscle lifting weights, becoming bulky is difficult.

Women have lower levels of muscle building hormones, called anabolic

hormones. This makes it much more

difficult for women to build muscle mass. Not only do you not need to worry about

bulking up from weights, but women who participate in weight training actually become smaller and look leaner.

THAN THAT.”

It’s the native Texan blood flowing through his veins that prompted Bryan to first conceptualize his larger-than-life eateries. He came from ranching cowboy roots. He worked cattle from horseback. He branded and he roped. He mended fence, and maybe best of all, he rodeoed. He never passed up a chance to buck a bronc out of a chute or toss a loop over a steer. Even in those early days, Bryan had a non-stop mind hard-wired to creative channels. Challenges were embraced and he was always learning. He judged cattle and www.LiveLocalMagazines.com

horses through the Future Farmers of America program, and he was instrumental in developing some of the organization’s procedures. This laid the base for his fascination with business operations. “I loved everything about the cowboy culture,” Bryan said, “but I never considered making ranching my life’s work. I knew early on that I wanted to be a part of the service industry. I’m a strong people-person, and I wanted to add value to the lives of as many people as possible.” Bryan spent a year and a half in college classrooms, but a desk wasn’t his style. “I couldn’t concentrate on books when all I thought about was working and making money,” he admitted. “I dropped out when I was asked to go to work for a restaurant. I cooked and did a lot of other things. I loved it! I was home!” Bryan hired on with Outback, traveling around the country opening dozens and dozens of new locations. He thrived and he learned, and he met Brian Gasperson. He switched his allegiance to Cotton Patch restaurants in 2003, which is when he hooked up with colleague Alan Mann. He spent nearly 13 years with CP, leading the popular chain’s product development. He also formulated a clear vision of his future, which was based on his passion for cooking and his now well-defined desire to own restaurants. “The concept of what I wanted was 15-years in the making,” Bryan explained. “I didn’t just wake up one morning and decide to open 22 | FLOWER MOUND TOWN LIFE | SEPTEMBER 2021

t’s okay to admit it, ladies. We’ve all dreamed of looking at a special someone from beneath a fringe of long, luxurious lashes. Well, wake up! Today it’s possible through the expert skills and technologies at The Lash Lounge which, by the way, was voted the Best of Denton County for the fourth consecutive year. The franchise was established in 2006. Yvonne Hemphill, former VP of Operations for The Lash Lounge corporate office, and husband, Terrell, purchased a The Lash Lounge franchise in 2017. They opened January 30th in the Robertson’s

Creek Shopping Center in Flower Mound. Previously, there was a The Lash Lounge location in Highland Village, but its owners retired a year earlier, leaving the salon closed and the customer base scattered.

Business Spotlight The Hemphills’ Lash Lounge has distinguished itself as the flagship for the chain’s other 10 DFW salons, set apart from similar facilities by its total customization for each individual client. “The Lash Lounge was the very first salon to focus on lash extensions,” Yvonne said. “We took that focus forward another huge step when we began customizing extensions for each individual client who walked through our doors. One of the greatest benefits of customization is it allows us to preserve the integrity of the natural lashes. “Appointments begin with consultations, educating customers in what is healthy and sustainable for their natural lashes. For example, extremely thick, long extensions cannot be supported by fine, thin lashes. It’s like hanging a heavy ornament on the very end of a Christmas tree branch. All our technicians are trained to analyze natural lashes, to determine thickness, length, and the resulting weight ratio. This is not a one-size-fitsall application.” There are three lash extension applications. “The Classic has one extension on each lash,” she said. “If you have 20 natural lashes, you will have 20 longer lashes when we’re finished. The Volume uses a fan of lashes, as many as seven, on each lash. We make our own fans. Going back to that 20-natural lash example, if we apply five-lash extensions/fans to each of those 20, you would have 100 lashes per eye when done. The third style is Hybrid, which is a mix of the first two.” The expert technology and application during the two to 2 and one-half hour process is amazing. “It’s also tremendously rewarding when you watch a client look in a mirror and her face lights up when she sees her eyes. She’s ready for anything!” Yvonne said.

RIGHT FIT Every Woman Deserves The

hen shopping for a new bra or bikini, finding the right fit that also matches your style, personality, and beauty is important. There are big-box lingerie and department stores all over Denton County, each claiming that they have just the right amount of variety to match any woman’s needs. But it’s not often that they deliver on that promise. A new specialty lingerie boutique in The Shops at Highland Village called La Myrrah promises to buck that trend, offering the luxury and style every goddess deserves and at prices that simply can’t be beaten. “We want to give every woman exactly what she is looking for, whether it be fit, comfort, or style, in an atmosphere that is comfortable, exciting, and satisfying,” general manager and majority owner Maily Aljendra Garcia said. “Having seen what is out on the market today, there is a gap that needs to be filled. No one helps you. It’s not always the right fit, and there’s no attention to the client. Closing that gap just makes sense.” She added, “Most women go from store to store trying to find the bra they are looking for, and when they do, they spend a lot of money. You can come here, pay the right price, and get a better variety.” La Myrrah wants you to feel like this is “your lingerie store.” They believe every woman should look good in all situations, whether at work, home, at the beach, or out for a night on the town. And with that comes the importance of always ensuring the right fit! They offer Latin American designed lingerie lines, including bras, shapewear, swimwear, and jewelry in a wide array of sizes and styles paired with excellent customer service. “Our slogan is ‘The Real Fit’ because seven out of 10 women in American don’t find the right bra for them. We offer beautiful bras and bikinis that are luxurious and can compete with anything on the market in terms of material, size, style, color, and variety,” Garcia said. “A woman deserves to feel like a goddess. It matters that she looks good everywhere.”

SAFE for Winter

by Triple A A/C | photo courtesy of Triple A A/C

all is finally here! As our North Texas temperatures start to cool, it means it’s time to get your home’s heater ready for winter weather. February’s “Winterpocalypse” really took a toll on many heating systems. We saw that 95% of service calls had issues that could have been avoided with preventive maintenance. Ignoring maintenance of your system could mean your system is underperforming, unsafe, or simply won’t run at all. The great thing is, there are two things you can do to prevent a system breakdown or a safety issue for your family!

36 | FLOWER MOUND TOWN LIFE | SEPTEMBER 2021

The first thing you can do to help make sure your system is ready to go for the winter is to change the filter. Dirty filters are the number one cause of heater failure, so make sure those filters are changed regularly. The second thing you can do is to schedule your heater’s maintenance to be performed by a trained professional. We have special tools that are required for heating tune-ups, as well as thousands of hours of training to ensure your system is prepared to operate safely and efficiently.

Dirty filters are the number one cause of heater failure...

We saw that 95% of service calls had issues that could have been avoided with preventive maintenance. For gas operated heating systems, a trained professional should: •

Check for gas leaks at the heater.

Inspect the heat exchanger to look for any cracks that could let Carbon Monoxide escape into the home.

Ensure the gas pressures are set correctly.

Perform the initial heater start-up and make sure the system is operating properly.

For Heat Pump systems, a trained professional should: •

Wash the outdoor unit with a foaming, dirt removing, coil cleaner. This helps the system breathe and allows it to heat the home better.

Make sure the Heat Pump is coming on and operating properly. If it is not operating properly, it could lead to an unexpectedly high utility bill.

Ensure the emergency heat strips are operating properly and coming on when they are supposed to.

When the temperatures start to drop to 65 degrees, it is time to call us to get your home’s heater ready for winter weather. With properly trained technicians and family service based right here in Flower Mound, we are ready to help you avoid a breakdown this winter. Call us for your heat system maintenance today at 972.440.1065. www.LiveLocalMagazines.com

hen we think about luxury items, we think about fast cars, diamonds, name brand clothing, or even expensive bags. One thing that most likely doesn’t come to mind are feminine hygiene products. Most people would consider those products a necessity. But many women around the world know that that’s not the case. Non-profit organization, She Supply, has made it their mission to eliminate period poverty for women once and for all. The idea of She Supply began in August of 2016. Chairwoman of She Supply, Kathy Meyer, went on a youth choir mission trip and was introduced to the issue of period poverty. Seeing that this was an issue, Kathy got a group of women together for lunch where they discussed the notion of creating an organization to help women who were suffering from this injustice. In September of 2016, the group applied to be a non-profit organization. It was here that She Supply truly began to make a change in our society. “It started with women bringing items such as pads, tampons, and panty liners to group functions,” Vice Chairwoman, Dr. Lisa Pierce Johnson said. “Period poverty is effecting hundreds if not thousands of women in Denton County,” Lisa said. “We have 161,000 women in Denton County that live below the poverty line. The most shocking part of this is that feminine hygiene products are included as a luxury tax item. This means that women who live below the poverty line can’t use their Lonestar cards or government funds to purchase their feminine hygiene necessities, such as pads and tampons.

“Women are having to choose between food for their children and their need for feminine hygiene products.”

42 | FLOWER MOUND TOWN LIFE | SEPTEMBER 2021

www.LiveLocalMagazines.com

“Women are having to choose between food for their children and their need for feminine hygiene products,” Lisa said. What started as a small organization has quickly grown into something bigger than they ever imagined. “We started with three partner agencies, Pedi Place, Friends of the Family, and Salvation Army,” Lisa said. The foundation began with packing parties, where the women would take 10 feminine hygiene products and package them into little baggies and then deliver them to the partner agencies. “In the last four years She Supply has grown beyond belief. We now work with 15 partner agencies,” Lisa said.

still deliver small packaging to the

Salvation Army because that is what that partnering agency needs for the area.

“This year we’ve already exceeded our number of donations from last year,” Lisa said.

As of the end of July, She Supply had delivered 228,705 packages to their partnering agencies.

“People are blown away when we tell

them that feminine hygiene products are considered a luxury,” Lisa said.

The luxury tax was started during the

war and was intended to create funds for the militia. What started out as

helpful has now lost its usefulness. “No one believes that these products are a luxury,” Lisa said.

Period poverty is something that affects 1 in 4 women. And yet,

tampons and pads are some of the

least commonly donated items to homeless shelters and food banks. “No one wants to show up to a job interview and have a fear that they’ll have an accident,” Lisa said. “Having the resources to be able to receive feminine products creates a sense of decency and greatly impacts a woman’s confidence. We’re empowering women. We’re sisters lifting each other up.” She Supply has gone above and beyond to create feminine hygiene equality for the women of Denton County but also our surrounding areas. What started out as a small group of women wanting to meet a need has turned into an organization that is changing the lives of our locally deprived women. She Supply is opening the eyes of people everywhere that period poverty is a real thing and it’s time for a change.

With the growth of She Supply, the nonprofit organization now sees donations on

“This has been an amazing journey,” Lisa said. She Supply even saw success last year during the height of COVID-19. She Supply delivered 249,000 packages of bras, panties, and feminine hygiene products during COVID. “In the world of period poverty, we use a term called cycles funded. The amount of donations we delivered last year equaled to 45,000 cycles,” Lisa said.

taying fit and healthy is often viewed as trendy. And although each generation has produced varying approaches to wellness, there is no doubt that a focus on health is a consistent part of our culture. However, staying healthy can become an individual fad when you find yourself one day up and ready for the gym and other days face down, usually in a bowl of ramen noodles. The truth is the same for dental health, and in this women’s wellness issue, it is important to keep in mind the importance of consistent dental and oral health care — especially for women. According to the National Women’s Health Network (NWHN), many women go without necessary dental care because of challenging barriers “connected to and made worse by other access challenges, such as finding transportation, taking time off work, and arranging childcare.” It is not uncommon that many wives and mothers delay their own dental care to ensure their families receive dental care first. This often results in the necessity of major dental restorative work that could be prevented prior to the neglect. Though the sentiment is noble, all family members deserve to receive proper dental care to avoid dental catastrophes.

Women also face certain unique dental concerns. Again, according to NWHN, fluctuating hormone levels during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause, as well as from oral contraceptive use, can lead to severe gum disease. Pregnancy also presents unique dental concerns as poor diet or morning sickness that can result in acid reflux and can cause damage to the teeth. Receiving dental care while pregnant should also be a team effort between the dentist and obstetrician to ensure the safety of the mother and baby while considering comfort level, medications, and radiographs. Keeping these concerns in

So, remember, as you focus on your overall health and wellness, do not overlook the value of dental and oral health by keeping your trainer close and your dentist closer! Happy smiling!

WICKED BOLD VEGAN KITCHEN

t's all about family at Flower Mound's newest vegan establishment, Wicked BOLD Vegan Kitchen. Owners Deric and Brooklynn Cahill named the restaurant after their family members - Brooklynn, Ophelia, Landon, & Deric. And they began their vegan journey after they learned their daughter couldn't eat animal products like cheese and eggs.

Back in Florida, they started out with making vegan chocolate out of their apartment. And when they moved here to DFW, they decided to expand their chocolate business and also open up a vegan restaurant where they can share some of their favorite vegan products and recipes with the community.

Their guacamole flight, which comes

We were able to sample quite a few things from their kitchen menu, including:

cheese topped with lettuce, onions,

with three types of guacamole —

including a chocolate guacamole. Yes, you read that right. And yes, it is surprisingly delicious!

We also tried their popular Italian

Sandwich made with vegan pastrami, capicola, pepperoni, and American

tomatoes, and spices. You'll be surprised how much this tastes like a meat-lover’s Italian sandwich!

We also got to sample one of their new

bowls - the Texasmexus made with black

In addition to being a vegan kitchen, Wicked BOLD is also a sober bar, getting creative mixing up cocktails without the alcohol. Some of the mocktails you can try at their bar include a Smoked Rosemary Palo, a Cucumber Fizz, and a Chocolate Whiskey. It was fun to see so many people coming in to experience Wicked BOLD for the first time while we were there, and we can't wait to see their continued success here in our community. So, whether you are an experienced vegan or you're just curious what eating vegan looks like, we'd love for you to head to Wicked BOLD soon to meet Brooklynn and Deric and their family. Our moods were instantly lifted by walking into their restaurant and talking with them, and we know that yours will be too!

Then to top it all off, we finished up with

their famous tabletop S'mores complete with some of their own signature

chocolate and a tabletop fire pit so you can roast those marshmallows to perfection.

FIGHTING LIKE A

SUPERHERO

magine someone asking a mother how her cancer-stricken daughter is doing, and the first thing she says is “fabulous!” Isn’t it strange? “It feels weird to be cheerful about it, but it’s hard not to be positive when that powerful energy is around you,” says Jennifer, a former journalist at Fox News Channel whose daughter has been going through cancer treatment for the last few months. “I’m not saying she doesn’t have a bad day here and there, but now that her lymphoma symptoms are gone, she’s living her best life!”

That’s the story of Amanda, a 17-year-old Flower Mound girl who is fighting cancer like a superhero!

Amanda developed some discomfort in her body in March. Starting from itchy skin, when it just did not stop, the family sought medical help. The body continued showing multiple signs. It was June 10th, and almost three months since her symptoms started, Amanda was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma. “When we first heard the news, I felt like the whole world dropped out from under us. I cried a lot. I was crying, and Amanda put her arm around me and told me it would be okay,” Jennifer shared. “It was that moment I saw her inner strength, and I was just amazed by her reaction.” It’s an emotional phase for a mom to watch her daughter go through all of this. Still, as Jennifer says, Amanda’s positive attitude is contagious, and it makes this whole process easier on her and everyone who knows her.

“I CAN SMILE BECAUSE I KNOW HOW FAR I’VE COME, AND I’M TRYING TO LIVE THE BEST LIFE I CAN UNDER THE CIRCUMSTANCES.” 50 | FLOWER MOUND TOWN LIFE | SEPTEMBER 2021

“Words cannot express the pride and admiration of how my daughter has attacked this situation. When we received the cancer diagnosis, we tailored our reaction and support to Amanda’s reaction to the situation. She immediately was ready to start treatment, fight this disease, and move towards a cure to continue with her life,” dad Rob mentioned. Jennifer added “The doctor called and told me the news. I told Amanda, and she www.LiveLocalMagazines.com

said, ‘I already knew that.’ No tears. She had diagnosed herself a few weeks before with that exact cancer after reading many blogs and WebMD,” Jennifer explained. Amanda is a wonderful girl who has this inexplicable courage to convert her pain into power. She was committed to the fact that she’s a strong girl and she can beat cancer. “I can smile because I know how far I’ve come, and I’m trying to live the best life I can under the circumstances,” she said. “Focusing on helping others also keeps me motivated and smiling.” About a month into her treatment, she realized that many families out there cannot afford diseases like cancer. She discovered the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and signed up for the Light the Night Walk with an aggressive goal of raising $25,000 by November. She did this all without the prodding of her parents. Lymphoma www.LiveLocalMagazines.com

Society has contacted Amanda through social media and thanked her for her contribution. Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a cancer of the immune system. Reports say an estimated 8,830 new cases are expected in the U.S. in 2021. September is Lymphoma Awareness Month and also Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. So, there couldn’t be a better month to tell the world the story of Amanda! This Flower Mound High School senior who plans to go to college and be a pediatric nurse has not only the town but the entire country standing by her side. On a Facebook group named Team Amanda, you’ll see hundreds of people from all over the nation wearing purple wristbands that say “Team Amanda - Fight Like A Queen.” People are sending love, wishes, and prayers to her. “Our circle of friends, immediate community, LISD, and the Town of Flower SEPTEMBER 2021 | FLOWER MOUND TOWN LIFE | 51

Meal trains, gifts, well wishes, offers of help, sharing personal cancer stories, and a re-connection to old friends have kept us positive and reinforced the idea that we are all in this world together, Rob shared. “There are many people quietly dealing with cancer. Amanda’s willingness to share her journey and put herself out there should help to teach and educate the entire community about this disease and other struggles we may not know our neighbors are dealing with.”

ed and white are only the beginning of the types of different wines. This initial classification of wine is based only on the color of the wine and has absolutely nothing to do with the types of grapes used to make the wines. It also has nothing to do with the different combinations of ingredients, the various vintage years, or even the quality of the wine, or the time the wine is aged. Let’s take a look at some of the different types of wines that may be familiar to you, and some you may not have been introduced to as yet.

REDS

Reds KNOW YOUR

Whites

Red wines are made with either a red or black variety of grape. Just as there are different types of citrus such as tangerines, grapefruit, clementine, or naval oranges, which all have different properties; grapes also have a wide variety of taste and color. These different grapes are then crushed and some even blended into different combinations in order to make the various types of red wine.

Shiraz, also known as Syrah by European vintners, is a hearty red wine with intense, spicy undertones as well as an extremely long finish on the palate. Merlot is usually considered an “introductory” wine as it has a smoother texture and is less rough on the palate. Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the worlds’ best known variety and is brimming with flavors of black currant when still young in age and rolls into more of an oak flavor due to the barrels in which it is aged.

Pinot Noir is a light colored and flavored wine that is

rarely blended.

Zinfandel is a highly blended wine that makes the greatest variety of wines, from a light pink blush to the deep, ruby reds. A few reds that you may not be aware of are the Barbara, used widely for the production of rich cooking www.LiveLocalMagazines.com

wines and tomato sauces; the Brunello, which is only permitted for use in making the bold and rare Tuscan wine, Brunello Di Montaleino; Gamay which is a wine meant to be drunk shortly after bottling for a crisp, fruity taste; and Tempranillo which is a full-bodied red wine, usually blended in with Grenache to develop the flavor.

WHITES

Chardonnay and Pinot Gris are undoubtedly the two most popular grape varieties when it comes to white wines. These are usually the go-to wines for most white wine drinkers. Chardonnay has a velvety citrus flavor, while Pinot Gris has a bit more acidic bite as a young wine.

Sauvignon Blanc is another popular white wine, which is drier and less fruity than many of the other white wines, but still offers a fresh finish.

Semillon is an interesting white wine with more of a fig-like character. Semillon is usually blended with Sauvignon Blanc to help increase the fullness of the wine. Muscat, which has no resemblance to muskadet wine, but common to the name, provides an extremely musky aroma. Riesling, which is originally from the regions of Germany, boasts a dry yet sweet flavor with a good bit of acid to round out this “pleases everyone” wine. This is a short list of the wide variety of wines. Of course, you want to find a wine that you love and can always enjoy. However, it is good to experiment with different wines to develop your palate and explore new wines. A fun way to do this is to host or attend a wine tasting party. If you have a local wine shop, ask about wine tastings they host. Or, grab a friend and a new bottle of wine and imagine the fun and possibilities! SEPTEMBER 2021 | FLOWER MOUND TOWN LIFE | 55

aise your hand if you knew Marcus High School had a Clay Target Team! Anyone answering yes should be aware it won its first national titles in June — less than a month after capturing a state championship.

Marcus took the varsity Sporting Clays division at the Texas Youth Education in

Shooting Sports (TXYESS) in Waco and Fort Worth and the United States Youth Education in Shooting Sports (USAYESS) events in San Antonio. Participating on both teams were John Perkins, Alex Siebert, Logan Harris, Grant Holdorf, and Hunter Garner. Now a senior, Garner joins Holdorf, a junior, on this year’s team.

Also returning is sophomore Olivia Simmons, who won the girls’ national junior varsity American Skeet and Skeet Doubles. She also joined Max Bradlo, Josh

Wynne, James Eade, and Brayden Scott to earn gold in junior varsity American Skeet, American Trap, and Sporting Clays. The intermediate squad finished third in all three disciplines.

Winning state titles at Marcus dates back to 2015-2016, five years after the

club was founded as part of the Youth Target Foundation by Jeanie Almond.

Her granddaughter, Makenna Van Sant, was one of 12 students who were part of that original team.

Devin Barge, a competitive clay target shooter since the late 1990s who is a multiple nationally-certified instructor and referee and range safety officer,

served as co-head coach with Glenn Smoot until 2019 and by himself in 2020-

2021 when his daughter Taylor graduated. Barge started as an instructor and has returned to that role this year under new head coach Dave Hubbard, whose son Michael is an eighth grader at Lamar Middle School.

“Success comes from focusing on being good people and doing the right

thing,” Barge said. “The sport is simple in concept and the mechanics. It’s fun

but not necessarily easy. It’s the same principle as golf and the bow and arrow. It’s all about execution. It’s simple but not easy.”

Barge helped the program grow to as many as 60 members between 2015-16 and 2018-2019. It dipped to about 35 last year and this year due in large part to the COVID-19 pandemic which canceled state and national competitions. 56 | FLOWER MOUND TOWN LIFE | SEPTEMBER 2021
