S
omeone asked me recently to pick my favorite local small business. It was an honest question, but I couldn’t help but shudder at the thought of choosing just one.
It’d be like asking a parent to choose their favorite child. I can’t! I love all of them! I’m sure I’m preaching to the choir on this one, but I mention this because it’s the holiday season. The calendar has officially flipped to Thanksgiving, and before you know it, Christmas will be here. So, please do the right thing and shop local. I know it’s our job here at Murray Media to highlight small businesses in the pages of our neighborhood magazines and during Best of Denton County time. Still, I’ve always looked to my fellow smallbusiness owners for any of my needs. It could be something as simple as picking up donuts for the family on a lazy Saturday morning, grabbing a cup of coffee on the way into work, or gifting myself a long-overdue trip to the local day spa. And yes, it also includes buying Christmas gifts. The personal attention I receive is out of this world. These are my friends, neighbors, and even family. They work hard, and in almost every case, you can find what you’re looking for without having to go to a big-box store. As luck would have it, our local business scene is overflowing with the best of the best, and they’re all committed to a servant attitude. We should be supporting them during the holiday season. 1. Grapevine Grapevine residents love Christmas, and they definitely know how to celebrate. Festivities begin from mid-November and go through the beginning of January. With over 1,400 events spanning over their 40 day celebration, there’s events and fun to be had for the whole family. 2. Fredericksburg If you want to experience the Christmas traditions of Germany, look no further than the Texas Hill Country of Fredericksburg. 3. Galveston Galveston Island brings Christmas to life every year during the holiday season. They

DENTON COUNTY WOMAN TURNS 100 Ms. Dorothy Webb, a member of Denton’s very own Senior Center, turned 100 years old on November 9th. Dorothy enjoys exercising at the senior center and can also be found mowing the yard, patching fences, or building things. Dorothy also enjoys taking her long-haired Chihuahua, Heidi, on a walk every single day. Her secret to living to 100 is to stay busy, work hard and do what you have to do. This year, United Way is celebrating 10 years of its annual event, Dancing with Our Stars. And once again, the organization is giving back to the community one dance at a time.

here are people who bristle when they hear a Texan, native or transplant, mutter that slightly cocky adage that says, “Texas is a state of mind.” What does it even mean? Well, in the Texas fashion world, it’s often referred to as “Texas Boho.” It means it’s perfectly fine to wear a mink coat and cowboy boots to antique fairs. Or maybe butt-hugging jeans set against wrists, fingers, and ears dripping with diamonds. You don’t need to live on a ranch or ride horses to carry off a Western-style. Last year, the prestigious magazine Glamour made sure its readership understood the legitimacy of the long-lasting movement when it wrote that it is “alive and well.” It’s that open “state of mind” interpretation that Tyler Hawkins is encapsulating successfully in The Ranch Arrangement in Denton. Hawkins is six months into his ownership of The Ranch Arrangement, a 6,000 square foot store that focused on rustic ranch furniture with a spotlight on custom leather sofas, chairs, and accent pieces at the time of his takeover. The

35-year-old, single, former truck-driving oil-field-worker-turned-entrepreneur liked what was in the store, but he entered the venture with a specific plan.
“I especially love the leather,” he said, “and the fact we can customize it just about any way our clients prefer. I want to keep some of the rustic edges, but I also want to do some redefining of the word ‘west’ or ‘western.’” West/western, like Texas, is a permanently flexible state-of-mind. “I want to show people it can be rustic like it was in those early days, but it can also be a smooth, legitimate part of the present and the future,” Hawkins explained. “The store’s configuration is perfect for doing that because it has several spaces-withina-space. I’ve made those into separate vignettes, allowing customers to see and to experience how the rustic can have a natural flow into transitional, or even modern/contemporary. It actually gives life to that ‘state of mind’ concept.” Prior to Hawkins’ rearranging and redefining, the store’s generous inventory

came off as cluttered with a dose of hodgepodge. It was difficult to showcase particular items. That’s changed, especially with important accessories such as rugs. “We now have one room devoted to rugs,” Hawkins explained. “We have one rack of 8’ x 10’ rugs and another of 5’ x 7’. I’ve made a concentrated effort to offer a variety of quality, style, and design. The goal is to keep my established clientele of 50-year-olds-and-up satisfied, while also drawing in newer and younger customers. To do that, I’ve stocked rugs from machine-made to hand-knotted. We have a number of styles, including a lot of distinctive southwestern motifs.”

Hawkins realized the importance of promotion when he signed the papers for The Ranch Arrangement. One of the first projects he launched was a complete reworking of the store’s website. “I intend to include more and more products online,” he explained, “and to encourage more online purchasing. A person recognizes our quality as soon as he or she visits the store. That establishes a comfort level for future online buying. I’m also finding that most people check the website before making their first visit. So, there’s a complete circle.” 18 | LAKE CITIES LIVING | NOVEMBER 2021
By December 1, Hawkins plans to have a lot of new, carefully curated leather furniture in the store. “The feel, the smell, and the overall character and integrity of leather will always be my first love,” he admits. “It’s been there since I was a kid. We have only high-quality leather and it’s all made in the USA. I want people to come in and touch it, run their hands over it, sit on it. I’ll have a lot of traditional styles, as well as a broad latitude for customization. “To me, leather offers the perfect framework for that state-of-mind we
talked about. It’s able to make a smooth, seamless transition from the past into the present as well as the future.”

he entire social scene has endured a couple of rough, negative years, making many folks wonder if human goodness died out somewhere along the way. However, Miss Ann Russell, 65, of Lake Dallas, is not a member of that club. Life has not been an easy journey for Miss Ann, but she’s never failed to play the cards she was dealt with grace, dignity, and above all, gratitude.
“My father was an alcoholic and died when I was 16,” she said. “I watched him struggle, and I also saw the tremendous good that God and Alcoholics Anonymous did for him.” Marriage wasn’t a part of the script for Miss Ann, but caring for others was. “My mom came down with cancer,” she explained. “I lived with her in Little Elm so I could take care of her. I also realized I needed an education so, while looking after her, I went to college to become a home economics teacher in Lake Dallas. I cleaned offices at 4 in the morning to help pay for things.” By her own admission, drug and alcohol usage was fairly common during her younger years. That, along with the possible predisposition inherited from her father, caught up with her. “Thankfully, I saw what God and working through AA did for my dad,” she repeated. 24 | LAKE CITIES LIVING | NOVEMBER 2021

"So I didn’t waste time going there myself. Again, God and working through AA, did the same for me. And I now have 37 years of sobriety.” Miss Ann became a certified teacher in Lake Dallas ISD, concentrating on home economics until the course was dropped from the curriculum. Her mother passed away while she was still teaching. “I was making the drive from Little Elm to Lake Dallas long before there was a bridge,” Miss Ann said. “It was quite a trek back then. One day, I saw a For Sale sign in front of a cute little house just down from the middle school. I sold my mother’s house in 2001 and bought it.” Health problems always plagued Miss Ann. They still do. She could no longer stand for long periods when she left teaching due to bulging discs in her neck. She was unemployed for two years when she applied to FEMA in 2004 and was hired. She’d undergone a neck fusion, but it did nothing to ease the pain of long hours at a FEMA computer. She retired very early in 2016. Somewhere during the long work hours, the physical pain and the medical procedures, Miss Ann lost track of the condition of the cute, little house she bought in 2001. It was her home for two decades, and like a loving but comfortable marriage, she didn’t notice the rotting fascia and other widespread deterioration of her “partner.” Reality broadsided her when, less than two months after undergoing heart surgery, she received a letter from the city of Lake Dallas. It
outlined a list of expensive repairs to make within 30-days to avoid a lien. “I had no idea what to do,” Miss Ann said. “This was all new to me. I couldn’t afford an attorney, and I couldn’t afford to make the repairs, especially not in 30-days.” She confided in a couple of friends, and that’s when the basic goodness of people began spreading rainbows over the little house. “Friends helped me start a GoFundMe page,” she said. “I’d never heard of such a thing, and it really wasn’t easy to ask for help. AA and God taught me to be a helper and a giver, but I never thought about the help coming toward me." She added, “Even now, I work at not being a blubbering idiot about the whole thing, but my gratitude runs so deep for all of the people who stepped forward with money, donated labor, and so much more. We’re not finished with the repairs, and it’s taking more than 30 days, but the city is working with us. So many special people and new friends came into my life because of this; people such as Vicky (Moody), who’s been a true godsend. Not only does she help coordinate everything, but she calls every day just to check on me. I hate talking about the negative stuff in my life. That probably sounds crazy because that’s all I’ve done here. But I have far more good than bad. I have food, a solid roof over my head, my cat and so many friends who care about me with so much love. A lot of people say I haven’t had an easy life, but you know what? I’m so grateful God let me have it!”

Human trafficking involves the use of force, coercion, or fraud to obtain some type of labor or sex act. Traffickers might use violence, manipulation or false promises of wellpaying jobs or romantic relationships to lure victims into trafficking situations. Investigation Unit. The unit will begin with a Sergeant and two investigators whose sole purpose will be the detection and
investigation of Human Trafficking. The
unit will receive specialized training and coordinate with other local, state, and
federal agencies to detect, investigate,
and make arrests of those involved in the trafficking of human beings.

his satisfying recipe features a traditional “stand-and-stir” style risotto complemented by a delicious blend of crisp-tender sautéed vegetables. Here, a mix of onion, peas, carrots, asparagus, yellow squash, and zucchini add an appealing pop of color, texture, and flavor to a delicious base of creamy risotto.
INGREDIENTS: 2 T. EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL, DIVIDED ½ C. WHITE ONION, CHOPPED SMALL ½ C. FROZEN PEAS ½ C. CARROTS, CHOPPED SMALL
1/3 C. ASPARAGUS, CHOPPED INTO 1” PIECES 1/3 C. YELLOW SQUASH, CHOPPED SMALL 1/3 C. ZUCCHINI, CHOPPED SMALL SEA SALT AND BLACK PEPPER, TO TASTE 1 C. ARBORIO RICE ½ C. DRY WHITE WINE

DIRECTIONS: 1. Add one tablespoon olive
oil to a large high-sided skillet set over medium-high heat.
Add the onion, peas, carrots, asparagus, squash, and
zucchini and season with salt and black pepper, to taste.
2. Cook, stirring frequently,
until the vegetables are crisptender and start to develop some color, approximately 4-5 minutes. Transfer the
vegetables to a bowl and set aside.
3. Add the remaining olive oil and the Arborio rice to the skillet. Toast the rice for 1-2 minutes while
stirring continually. 4. Reduce heat to medium
and pour in the white wine.
Deglaze the skillet by gently scraping the bottom with a
spatula or wooden spoon to loosen any browned bits. 5. When the wine is
completely absorbed, add
one-half cup warm broth to
the skillet and cook, stirring continually, until absorbed,
approximately 4-5 minutes.
Repeat this process with the remaining broth, one-half
cup at a time, until the rice is tender and creamy.
6. Stir in the sautéed
vegetables, Parmesan cheese, and lemon zest. Cook for 1-2 minutes, or just until heated through. Remove from heat and stir in the fresh parsley. Season with additional salt
and black pepper, if desired, and serve immediately with
additional Parmesan cheese on the side. Enjoy!

e loved visiting Mad For Chicken to figure out what it is that the community has so quickly fallen in love with. I think it’s safe to say their double-fried Korean-inspired chicken wings are a big draw, but there are lots of other amazing things about Mad For Chicken you need to come enjoy.

Mix together the cider, rum, & schnapps in a large pitcher. Add the apples to a small bowl and toss them with the lemon juice. Thread the diced apples onto skewers. Pour the spiked cider into glasses filled with ice, then garnish with an apple skewer and serve.
