HOLIDAY SEASON

S

omeone asked me recently to pick my favorite local small business. It was an honest question, but I couldn’t help but shudder at the thought of choosing just one. It’d be like asking a parent to choose their favorite child. I can’t! I love all of them! I’m sure I’m preaching to the choir on this one, but I mention this because it’s the holiday season. The calendar has officially flipped to Thanksgiving, and before you know it, Christmas will be here. So, please do the right thing and shop local. I know it’s our job here at Murray Media to highlight small businesses in the pages of our neighborhood magazines and during Best of Denton County time. Still, I’ve always looked to my fellow smallbusiness owners for any of my needs. It could be something as simple as picking up donuts for the family on a lazy Saturday morning, grabbing a cup of coffee on the way into work, or gifting myself a long-overdue trip to the local day spa. And yes, it also includes buying Christmas gifts. The personal attention I receive is out of this world. These are my friends, neighbors, and even family. They work hard, and in almost every case, you can find what you’re looking for without having to go to a big-box store. As luck would have it, our local business scene is overflowing with the best of the best, and they’re all committed to a servant attitude. We should be supporting them during the holiday season. I know I will. Will you? Thanks for reading our latest issue!

It ’s SECRET

SANTA T ime Great Gift Ideas for the Cubicle Next Door

I

by Caylie Howard

t’s that time of year to start thinking about office holiday parties and gift exchanges. It’s a time of year to show your appreciation for the people you work with every day. Are you stuck on ideas for what to get that special co-worker? Here’s a list of thoughtful and budget-friendly gift ideas that your work friends will absolutely love.

Blanket

Do you have that one co-worker who’s always cold? Gift them a blanket this holiday season. They can keep it at their desk so that when they get a bit chilly, they’ll be able to bundle up and get warm and cozy. Giving the gift of warmth this Christmas is sure to make you an office favorite.

Self-Heating Coffee Mug

There’s always that one person who is known for making a cup of coffee and then making 15 trips to the break room to reheat it. A self-heating coffee mug would be the perfect gift for this co-worker. It would save them time and help them be more productive during the day by not having to get up and reheat their coffee every 30 minutes. It’s a gift that keeps on giving.

HydroJug

Is there someone in the office who is super into fitness? Or maybe they’re trying to get into the habit of a healthier lifestyle? Gifting them a HydroJug this holiday season is a great way to show your support in their interests or lifestyle. A HydroJug is ideal for staying hydrated throughout the day.

Wine Tumbler with a Bottle of Wine Do you know of anyone in the office who is a wine connoisseur? Buy them a wine tumbler for their holiday gift. You can even customize it to each person’s interest to make it a more personal item. Pairing the tumbler with their favorite bottle of wine is sure to earn you some major brownie points.

Candle Candle buying can be a real addiction. It can also be a costly problem to have. Get in the spirit of giving this Christmas season by purchasing some limited edition holiday candles for that co-worker who just can’t help themselves. They will love it, and their wallet might thank you, too.

Wireless Phone Charger and Stand Is there someone in the office who is constantly on their phone? It’s almost as if their phone is glued to their head. If so, a wireless phone charger and stand would be the perfect gift for that co-worker. With this gift, you’re eliminating the anxiety of their phone dying halfway through the day with no way to charge it. And with this gift, they can still use their phone as it charges. You’ll be the office champion with this gift choice.

Aromatherapy Diffuser

The workplace can be stressful, especially if you also carry a heavy workload. Some people handle stress better than others. If you have a co-worker who doesn’t cope well, try gifting them an aromatherapy diffuser this holiday season. The stressrelieving aromas will surely help mellow them out. And it’s a gift that the whole office can enjoy. You’ll knock it out of the park with this holiday gift idea.

anta isn’t the only one making a list this year. Thanks to the programming folks in the tech world, holiday shopping has become a lot easier. Whether you shop online or shop around the mall (is that still a thing?), you may want to take your first step by downloading an app that can end gift anxiety. With the help of these apps you will be able to create gift lists, stay within budget, organize lists according to each person, and keep track of your purchases. Throw out the Post-Its and scrap paper, and no need to check the list twice. These apps are customizable and allow you to have everything you need in one secure location.

TOP GIFT LIST TRACKERS

this season GIFTSTER Free IOS | ANDROID

This simple and easy-to-use app is a private gift registry that allows you to organize lists for groups of people. Get your family and friends to join Giftster; each person creates a list of their wants and you are able to see it and buy it with just one click. The “reserve” feature is great because it eliminates duplicate gifts and the hassle of finding receipts. THE CHRISTMAS LIST $2.99 IOS | ANDROID

No idea what to get? This app has a curated list of all the top gift ideas for this year; you can browse through and add to your wishlist. With only four main parts to the app, it is easy to get started. Create a list, share with your friends and family, claim the items you want to purchase, and then set a budget for each person on your “Nice-List.” Stay organized and don’t lose track of time with this app’s fun Christmas countdown feature. SANTA’S BAG Free IOS Have you ever found a gift in the closet after Christmas? Unwrapped, no name, and no idea why you bought it? Santa’s Bag relieves the holiday brain fog with its simple to use category feature. After you’ve created your lists, added each person, and picked out their gifts, you can then categorize each gift as an idea, purchased, wrapped, or given. Do you hide gifts? In the app, add a location next to each item and the app will remind you where you hid it! GIFTED $2.99 IOS Re-gifting. It’s a thing. Not only does Gifted allow you to make lists and budgets like the other tracker apps, it goes one step further by keeping inventory of gifts from previous occasions. With the gift closet, you are able to track all your spare gifts: homemade gifts, items you bought on sale, the ones you want to re-gift, or the over-sized sweater Grandma Betty made you last year. And it is all noted in the app so you don’t re-gift to the wrong person! CHRISTMAS GIFT LIST Free ANDROID Christmas gifts are personal. At least they can be with the Christmas Gift List personal profile features. For every family member or friend you enter in the app, you can create an on-going list of likes, dislikes, and interests. The app archives the information so each year you can remember the non-drinkers, the ones with food allergies, or that Billy doesn’t watch Sesame Street anymore. This app also supports multiple currencies and languages! A good gift-list app should be able to handle the fast-paced, multi-tasking race that is the Christmas season. We’ve found the best of the best for you! Put down the pencil, pick up your smart phone and choose an app, and let’s end gift anxiety once and for all!

t’s not every day that a woman gets excited about going to the lingerie store. After all, finding the right fit that also matches her style, personality, and beauty is important. And achieving that look with a bra or bikini can sometimes feel overwhelming as they find themselves visiting one big-box lingerie or department store after another.

“We want to give every woman exactly what she is looking for, whether it be f it, comfort, or style, in an atmosphere that is comfortable, exciting, and satisfying.” 32 | LANTANA LIVING | NOVEMBER 2021

If this scenario sounds all too familiar, La Myrrah is the alternative you’ve been looking for.

Located in The Shops at Highland Village, La Myrrah wants you to feel like this is your lingerie store.

They believe every woman should look good in all situations, whether at work, home, at the beach, or out for a night on the town. And with that comes the importance of always ensuring the right fit!

They offer Latin American designed lingerie lines,

including bras, shapewear, swimwear, and jewelry in a wide array of sizes and styles paired with excellent customer service. Recently, they added even more

lines to compliment all your needs, including comfy pajamas and pants.

And if that weren’t enough, they’re offering musthave luxury and style at prices that simply can’t be beaten.

“Most women go from store to store trying to f ind the bra they are looking for, and when they do, they spend a lot of money. You can come here, pay the right price, and get a better variety.”

“Everyone who comes into our shop tells us

repeatedly, ‘Thank you for giving us an option. We’ve been used to going to one shop, but now we have

an alternative,” general manager and majority owner

Alejandra Garcia said. “Most women go from store to store trying to find the bra they are looking for, and when they do, they spend a lot of money. You can come here, pay the right price, and get a better variety.”

She added, “We want to give every woman exactly

what she is looking for, whether it be fit, comfort, or

style, in an atmosphere that is comfortable, exciting, and satisfying.”

La Myrrah recently had a ribbon cutting on November 9 and its grand opening on November 12th.

If you have been to La Myrrah before, you know what Alejandra says is 100% the truth. Most women travel far and wide to find the perfect lingerie, only to be

disappointed at every turn. Even if they find the right look, most are stuck with the wrong size. They also don’t receive personal attention while they shop.

Alejandra and her team are the complete opposite. They greet every customer with a warm smile as

soon as they walk in the front door. From there, they ask the right questions, listen to each customer’s concerns, and come up with real solutions.

A perfect example is one customer who came

in recently looking for a new bra. She had been

wearing a 34DD, but after talking with Alejandra for only a few moments, she was given more accurate www.LiveLocalMagazines.com

confident and beautiful.

“Having seen what is out on the market today, there is a

gap that needs to be filled,”

Alejandra said. “No one helps you. It’s not always the right

fit, and there’s no attention to the client. Closing that gap

just makes sense. Our slogan is ‘The Real Fit’ because

seven out of ten women in

America struggle to find the right bra for them. We offer beautiful bras and bikinis

that are luxurious and can

compete with anything on the market in terms of material,

size, style, color, and variety.

A woman deserves to feel like a goddess. It matters that she looks good everywhere.”

Every nook and cranny of La

Myrrah was designed with its customers in mind. In other words, they knew they had

the best products, but they

needed a warm and inviting

environment to complement their quality lingerie. That

process may have taken a little longer than Alejandra wanted due to the pandemic and

various shipping delays. Still, anyone who has been in the store lately will tell you that

it has a completely different look and feel.

“The shop finally looks exactly how I envisioned it all those

many months ago,” Alejandra said. “The look is here. We

went with the best look on the market today, and we

can’t wait to hear what our customers think.”

alvation Army’s Red Kettle began in 1891 by Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee. McFee became distraught at the thought that so many citizens of San Francisco were going hungry during the holiday season. His solution? Provide a free Christmas dinner to the destitute and poverty-stricken locals. His only major bump in the road was how to find the funds to make this happen.

36 | LANTANA LIVING | NOVEMBER 2021

www.LiveLocalMagazines.com

McFee couldn’t sleep at night as his heart filled with worry. He thought and prayed to develop a solution on how to financially fulfill his commitment to feeding 1,000 hungry citizens of San Francisco on Christmas Day. After many tireless nights of prayer, he was taken back to his days as a sailor in Liverpool, England. McFee remembered that at Stage Landing, where the boats came in, there was a large iron kettle called “Simpson’s Pot.” People who passed by would simply toss in a coin or two to help the less fortunate. The very next day, McFee took that idea and used it for his own cause. He placed a similar kettle at the Oakland Ferry Landing at the foot of Market Street. He put a sign next to the pot that said, “Keep the Pot Boiling.” It didn’t take long after that for him to receive the funds he needed to feed the hungry people on Christmas Day. Six years after that, the kettle initiative spread from the west coast all the way to the Boston area. That same year, the www.LiveLocalMagazines.com

combined effort nationwide resulted in 150,000 Christmas dinners. The Salvation Army now assists more than four and a half million people during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Captain McFee’s kettle idea launched a tradition that has spread worldwide. Kettles are now used in places such as Korea, Japan, Chile, and more. But in our home area of Denton County, our elected mayors take that tradition one step further with the annual Mayoral Red Kettle Challenge. The Mayoral Red Kettle Challenge involves the mayors of Lewisville, Flower Mound, and Highland Village, and is a friendly competition to see which town can raise the most money for the cause. “I could not be prouder of our Tri-City residents in Denton County for all they’ve given in the Mayoral Red Kettle Challenge over the past three years. I look forward to seeing what we do this year,” Highland Village Mayor Charlotte Wilcox said. For the past three years, the Mayoral Red Kettle Challenge has successfully brought our local communities together for an incredible cause during the holiday season. But no matter who wins this year’s battle, there will be joy and applause coming from each mayor and citizen. Mayor Wilcox added, “Friendly competition aside, the Salvation Army is the real winner for all they do to help those in need, and I know we are all grateful to have such an incredible organization in our communities.”

CHOKINGHAZARDS by Dr. Janet Webb, MD

W

hen thinking about choking hazards, our first thought is usually food. That’s because at least half of choking episodes are due to food. The other half could be secondary to a myriad of other household objects. With the upcoming holiday season, there will be lots of fun foods and toys introduced to your home. Here are a few reminders and tips to keep your home and children safe.

FLU SHOTS AVAILABLE

Food Hazards As always, nuts are especially dangerous due to the hard and round nature of nuts. Other similar foods include hard and sticky candies and whole grapes. Monitor your children when eating raw fruits and vegetables, especially if babies do not have a full set of teeth yet. Avoid giving children under the age of 4 years old popcorn, bubblegum, or chunks of hard meat and cheeses. Toy Hazards When bringing toys home, always read the label for age appropriateness. Toys should have an age range listed, but use them at your discretion. Be sure to show and teach your child how to play with the toy. Beware of small parts that can be detached. If it fits into the mouth, it is likely too small. Small batteries may be in the packaging. If you have any concern that a button battery may have been ingested, take your child to the nearest emergency department. They can be corrosive to the GI tract. Finally, watch for other small items like buttons, marbles, magnets, and even balloons. If you do find that your child is choking on an object, allow them to cough if they are able to. If they are not able to breathe, have someone call 911 and perform back blows in infants and the Heimlich maneuver in older children.

Ask The Expert: Decorating

T

GUEST ROOMS by Allison Fifer, POSH Home Staging & Redesign

he holidays are upon us! Living in a shopping metropolis and a destination for fun, it’s not a matter of if, but when will overnight guests arrive? Let’s talk about creating the perfect space for your overnight guests; one that says “Welcome! Glad you are here.”

The perfect room starts at the walls. Wall colors set the tone for the room. You want to select a fabulous color palette - a paint color that is light and fresh will keep the room feeling bright and airy, avoiding a gloomy or dark feel. Secondly, you want to select flooring that provides a feeling of warmth. Most guest rooms in Texas are either carpeted or have a cozy rug on a wood floor. Stepping onto this thick woven fabric will provide a setting that is peaceful, warm and inviting. Once your wall and flooring are in place, it is all about layering. Furniture is next and is the core of the room while bedding, pillows, art and accessories add the personality. There are two key factors to consider when decorating — size of room and use of the room. The old adage of “Form follows Function” is particularly true in designing this room.

For a bedroom that is specifically designed for housing guests, one should consider a queen sized bed with two nightstands and a 3-drawer chest. This will provide good balance to the room and cover basic needs for a guest. Additionally, if space allows, include a chair and ottoman where a guest may sit to enjoy a cup of tea, read a book, take off shoes or just be still. If your guest room is also doubling as an office, you may consider placing a quality sleeper sofa, day bed or an attractive futon in the room instead of a bed. All options will sleep two and save on space.

maker would make their visit special, adding that 5-star experience. Keep in mind that everything should be based on the size of the room. All items should be to scale so you avoid a room that looks cluttered. Having proper light is also important as a lot of people like to read at night. Two nice lamps will give the room balance while providing for reading. Adding color to the room can be done with your area rug, tasteful artwork and bedding. The bedding makes the bed and adds a flair of drama. The ideal scenario is for your guest to walk into your guest room and say “Wow! Thanks for having me!”

Adding in “creature comforts” are a nice bonus for your guests and include quality bedding, a big screen tv, reading materials, scented candles, extra towels, soft linens and pillows. Adding a coffee

he Lantana Living team is honored to celebrate Ariana Tashakkori, who’s now a Stamps Scholar! She’s determined, hardworking, and ambitious! On top of that, she loves animals and wants to spend her life working for their protection and welfare.

“It truly is the reason why I get up every morning, and knowing that all of my hard work will help me reach my goals is enough to push me through every challenge.”

The Stamps Scholarship is a prestigious undergraduate scholarship for students who demonstrate academic merit, strong leadership potential, and exceptional character. “I was in the middle of a session with the college student that I tutor. I saw the ‘225’ area code and knew where the phone call was coming from,” Tashakkori said. She is 18 and a freshman at Louisiana State University. “Naturally, I expected a rejection. So I was crying tears of joy before they had even finished delivering the news to me. All I could say was, 'thank you,' over and over again. I eventually had to return to my tutoring session slightly puffy-eyed.” She was awarded this scholarship during her senior year of high school, and it will cover four years of full tuition plus the cost of attendance. There is also a $14,000 enrichment stipend. Before enrolling at LSU, Ariana attended Guyer High School, Harpool Middle School, and E.P Rayzor Elementary School. Ariana is a science lover, with biology and ecology being her main interests. She’s pursuing a major in Natural Resources, Ecology, and Management, with a concentration in wildlife ecology. She also intends to minor in physical 46 | LANTANA LIVING | NOVEMBER 2021

Zoological Association. Along the way,

she hopes to aid in endangered species conservation efforts and educate the

public on the importance of ecological protection. She also looks forward to

assisting in increasing populations of

endangered and vulnerable species while also improving the welfare of animals in captivity. “I believe that zoos are

imperative to protecting and maintaining biodiversity, and I want to help ensure

that zoo animals are kept ethically," Ariana said. "After graduating from LSU, I will go on to attend veterinary school and then complete an internship and zoological medicine residency."

Growing up, her parents instilled in

her a love for academics and a drive to

think that my love for animals played a huge part in my success. Everything that I have achieved so far was motivated by my ultimate goal of protecting animals, and that goal is what keeps me going,” she added. “It truly is the reason why I get up every morning, and knowing that all of my hard work will help me reach my goals is enough to push me through every challenge.” Ariana has lived with her mother, father, and grandpa in Lantana since 2009. Her father was an immigrant from Iran, and he worked tirelessly to build a life in America for his kids. Both of her parents are psychologists who worked in academia, so she grew up recognizing the importance of education. “It is so important to me that I make my parents proud after they sacrificed so much to help me get to where I am, and I know that

adding the DVM title to my name will do exactly that,” she mentioned.

“Her intelligence, passion, humor, and compassion toward others are just a few of her remarkable characteristics. She’s also been dabbling in circus performances, which she hopes to continue with LSU in the spring.

On her typical days, Ariana is occupied with classes and homework. Outside of class, she’s an undergraduate research assistant under Dr. Ashley Long, a renewable natural resources professor at LSU. Her duties include compiling

HUMAN TRAFFICKING is modern day slavery

H

uman trafficking is modern day slavery and affects every corner of the world. Texas and Denton County are no exception. Interstate-35 being an un-tolled highway and a major cross-country, north-south route, is one of the main trafficking routes in the country. Human trafficking involves the use of force, coercion, or fraud to obtain some type of labor or sex act. Traffickers might use violence, manipulation or false promises of wellpaying jobs or romantic relationships to lure victims into trafficking situations. Traffickers often recognize and take advantage of people who are vulnerable.

WE ARE HIRING If you are interested in a career in Law Enforcement, join our family and be a part of a great organization. Detention Officer I positions start at $38,752.00 per year. Visit our website to apply. www.governmentjobs.com/ careers/dentoncounty

There are approximately 25 million enslaved worldwide. At any given time in Texas, there are 234,000 victims of labor trafficking and 79,000 victims of minor sex trafficking. To combat this issue,

Sheriff Tracy Murphree, with the approval of Denton County Commissioners Court, will implement a Human Trafficking

Investigation Unit. The unit will begin with a Sergeant and two investigators whose sole purpose will be the detection and

investigation of Human Trafficking. The

unit will receive specialized training and coordinate with other local, state, and

federal agencies to detect, investigate,

and make arrests of those involved in the trafficking of human beings.

“I’m sorry that this unit is necessary, but I’m confident this unit will be successful in saving those being trafficked and bringing to justice those responsible” Sheriff Murphee said. *If you believe you are a victim of human trafficking or may have information about a potential trafficking situation, please contact the US National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 or call Denton County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-388TIPS. CHOOSING

Outdoor AN

WREATH W

reaths are a popular decorating option indoors. The great variety of wreaths and their wondrous beauty make them popular with designers and decorators. The use of wreaths outdoors also provides an excellent opportunity to increase the aesthetic appeal of one’s home. Often found on doors or lamp posts, outdoor wreaths are popular outdoor decorating items.

52 | LANTANA LIVING | NOVEMBER 2021

www.LiveLocalMagazines.com

Of course, the most famous type of outdoor wreath is the door wreath that is so often used at Christmas. Usually made from evergreen branches and decorated with sturdy touches that can withstand the elements, the Christmas wreath annually adorns millions of outside doors. There are, of course, many other outdoor wreath options. The Christmas wreath, however, offers a wonderful standard against which other alternatives should measure up. Christmas door wreaths are sturdy. The balsam fir or other evergreen branches tolerate the weather well without significant degradation. All other outdoor wreaths should share this quality. An outdoor wreath will be constantly exposed to the elements. Any outdoor wreath under consideration must be able to handle the probable climate of the region in which it will be used. It makes little sense, for instance, to use a delicately assembled floral wreath when it is exposed to high winds. Likewise, a wreath resplendent in cloth bows is poorly suited www.LiveLocalMagazines.com

NOVEMBER 2021 | LANTANA LIVING | 53

for a rainy environment. Any wreath chosen for outdoor use must be sufficiently sturdy. Not only should the wreath itself be sturdy. It is also important that the strong base of the wreath be decorated in a manner that allows it to survive the weather. Delicate decorations should be avoided. Items fastened to a wreath should be affixed with wire or a similarly strong method. A small dab of glue from a hot glue gun or a thin piece of thread will never sufficiently attach decorations for an outdoor wreath. Decorating with outdoor wreaths can improve the look of a home and make it an inviting place for guests. However, appropriate care must be taken to choose wreaths that possess great sturdiness and longevity.

Overcome Your Fear of Writing

by Steve Gamel, Owner of Edit This

H

ave you ever written something and been too scared to share it? Do you have what you feel are great stories sitting in piles of spiral notebooks that have never seen the light of day? Are you fearful of the 5,325,001 terrifying outcomes of letting a stranger read your work?

You're not alone. Writers of all experience levels and walks of life are burdened by fear every day. We know it's simply part of the creative process, and yet, so many of us let it hold us

back – time and time again. But why? After all, we love to write! Why be afraid of what we love? Writing means something to us. It makes us happy and fulfilled. Even today, nearly 25 years after I started my writing career, I get scared of what people will think, what they'll say, and if they'll take my passion for the written word seriously. I felt those fears even as I was writing my book. I think sharing those fears in Write Like You Mean It and offering solutions that have worked for me helps other writers realize that they're not alone and that it is OK to be a little fearful.

The trick is not to let those fears keep us from becoming the writers we want to be. The excerpt below is a peek behind the curtain at what many writers experience. It also acts as a launching pad for the tips, tricks, and life hacks included in the rest of the book. To start writing, you first have to overcome your fears. Once you can do that, the writer's life is full of endless possibilities. “Beyond the fear of being dismissed as amateurs and having our love for the craft thrown back in our faces before anyone ever reads a word, many aspiring writers have a secondary fear of sharing their work – having it published and potentially read by hundreds of thousands of people – and subsequently judged. Even if we don't necessarily fear the act of writing poetry, song lyrics, blogs, newspaper articles, or novels, we hold back out of fear of what people will say or think, how they'll react, and what type of feedback they'll give. ‘What if they find a mistake?’ we worry. ‘What if they call me a fraud?’ ‘Am I ready for what people might say about this?’ I can't blame anyone for struggling with this aspect of fear. There is an incredible amount of vulnerability that comes with writing something and then putting it out there for the masses. After all, we're also putting a piece of ourselves out there.” I'm not God's gift to writing, but I've learned a thing or two over the years, and my message to other writers is this: You are talented. Your work deserves to see the light of day. Readers deserve to experience your passion. So get out there and share your creation – and write like you mean it!
