Hylke and Neri Kijlstra at their award-winning helicopter rebuild business, Helico Australia, on Whanregarwen Road in Alexandra.

By Emily Friedel HIS WORK as an aircraft engineer has taken Hylke Kijlstra from the rolling pastures of Whanregarwen Road to the sweltering heat of the Northern Territory to the frozen expanses of Antarctica and back again. Hylke and his wife Neri now own a thriving helicopter rebuild facility, Helico Australia, which was among the 2017 Murrindindi Business Award winners. Helico Australia is based on Whanregarwen Road, just down the road from where Hylke first had his interest piqued by the inner workings of aircraft. In his late teens, Hylke worked for

Scott and Wendy Fennell in their vineyard and sometimes helped Scott with his mobile helicopter maintenance business. “I just started doing more and more with Scott, then eventually did an aircraft engineering apprenticeship and left the grapes behind. Once you get presented with helicopters, it’s pretty hard to go back – it’s a fun trade,” Hylke says. Once qualified, the national shortage of aviation mechanics opened up boundless opportunities for travel and adventure, and Hylke certainly took advantage of this. “You can go anywhere in

the world with it, everyone wants to be a pilot, but no one wants to be the grease monkey, so there’s a shortage of engineers,” Hylke says. Between 2008 and 2011, Hylke did three trips to Antarctica and Macquarie Island, spending months in sub-zero temperatures each time. He worked for Helicopter Resources as part of the support team for a group of scientists doing fieldwork based at Davis, Casey, and Macquarie Island stations. “We were basically the taxi service for the scientists. It was a lot of fun; it’s like a mining camp where

everyone’s huddled together, and you can’t go anywhere. Everyone has to be selfsufficient, but also everyone has to get along,” he says. Working on the frozen continent had unique challenges and, for the aircraft engineers, the daily routine was flipped on its head. “When the weather was good (no blizzards), the helicopters had to work all day, so we had to try and do the maintenance overnight. The sun doesn’t go down there in summer, and the wind pretty much stops overnight, but the temperature would still be around minus 15 degrees. Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2017/18 – 13

We had a little shipping container that was called the ‘heli-hut’, and we would work until our hands couldn’t move anymore because they were too cold, then swap out with someone else.” Hylke also experienced isolated life in weather at the opposite end of the spectrum working for HeliMuster NT on an outback station in the Northern Territory. “It was all work, we worked six or seven days a week, but we learned about the aircraft

and learned good work ethic,” Hylke says. Hylke and Neri met in 2006 when Hylke took some time off his trade to work at Mittagundi Outdoor Education Centre, where Neri was a director. Neri later joined Hylke when he went north to be part of the HeliMuster NT team – Hylke in the hangar, Neri in the office – and that was when they began to share some aircraftrelated work. As with the Antarctic, life on the remote station

presented unique challenges. Aside from the extreme temperatures, the tiny community of workers on the station – which fluctuated between four and around thirty-five between the wet and dry seasons respectively – was far removed from the rest of civilisation. “It was hot! But it was good. We had our own little house, which was pretty basic – just two bedrooms, corrugated iron and a concrete floor. We had a nice garden with

beautiful shady trees, so we could have a veggie garden, and the river was nearby, so there were some really beautiful aspects of it. I didn’t mind living in the middle of nowhere, having the food truck only come every one or two weeks, not being able to go shopping – I didn’t miss any of that stuff. But when we worked there fulltime, I found it quite socially isolating, ” Neri says. Two years of the heat was enough for Neri, so the pair ventured southward again

Below: Some of the Helico Australia team in the shed where they tear down and rebuild Robinson helicopters from all around Australia.

to Tasmania in 2010. Neri had her own business as a massage therapist, which gave her the flexibility to travel and the opportunity for them to pursue more aircraft work together. “I could tour around with Hylke – he would rebuild helicopters, and I would either be massaging people or sanding helicopters,” Neri says. Hylke’s and Neri’s decision to embark on a new type of adventure – starting a family – prompted them to put down roots in Alexandra and take their work relationship to the next level, creating Helico Australia together in 2013. For a couple of years, it was just Hylke and Neri working on the business, which provided mobile helicopter maintenance and

overhauls around Australia. Then, in 2015, they were joined by Terry Ross. “We thought we’d just do a few helicopter rebuilds every year, just enough to keep the three of us busy, and that’d do,” Hylke says. The ‘few’ rebuilds each year proliferated, and since March 2016, Helico Australia has gone from a crew of three to a crew of nine, employing both local and interstate engineers. “The original plan was to keep it small, but we just can’t keep up with demand unless we employ more people. We enjoy working as a team after it just being the two of us for so long. We have employed such lovely people, all with a strong work ethic and heaps of enthusiasm, and it’s

really nice – we have a very sociable team,” Neri says. Finding a niche in the Australian helicopter servicing industry has been a significant factor in their success. “We specialise in the Robinson company brand, which are entry-level helicopters. There are more Robinsons in Australia than all the other types of helicopter combined. Everyone wants to work on the bigger helicopters, so we thought we’d take up the slack on the little ones, which is paying off. It’s easy to stretch yourself too thin by having too many aircraft types that you look after, so we thought we’d stick with the one and get really good at it,” Hylke says. Helico Australia focuses on

overhauling helicopters, which involves a complete teardown and rebuild after an aircraft has clocked up 2200 hours of operation or when it has been in service for 12 years. They work on helicopters that have come from as near as Thornton and as far away as Broome. “I get a lot of pleasure from getting an old bucket of poo in from somewhere and sending it out looking like new. We get to do everything from sheet metal work, to electricals, to painting, to upholstery. It’s good variety instead of just changing oil filters all the time,” Hylke says. Two years ago, Hylke and Neri moved the business into a large shed on Whanregarwen Road. With a few renovations, including Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2017/18 – 15

the installation of a roller-door big enough to let helicopters inside, the shed has allowed the work to come to them, rather than the other way around. The shed has some sentimental value for Hylke, too: it was once the home of his parents’ pottery studio and, after that, the workshop where his father constructed a 14-metre boat. The shed is also located just 150 metres from the home Hylke grew up in after his family emigrated from The Netherlands in 1989, and his parents still live there, just a stone’s throw away from where he is running his own business. So not only has Hylke’s career in aviation mechanics come full-circle with Helico Australia now based in his old stomping ground of Whanregarwen Road, but it has also given his family life a nice symmetry now that he and Neri are raising a family in the area he spent most of his own childhood. By Emily Friedel FOR LYN Hickey, catering is all about recreating the sense of togetherness and satisfaction she felt sharing a home-cooked meal with family while growing up in New Zealand.

airport, and we would watch the aeroplanes take off and land. Mum’s family is a big family, it was always lots of fun, with lots of food, and just good times, really, so there was always that good feeling around food,” Lyn says.

“We used to have Sunday roasts at Grandma and Grandad’s house. They lived on top of a hill in Wellington, overlooking the Wellington

These fond recollections of family feasts, which often included produce from family members’ backyards, have strongly influenced

Lyn’s attitude towards cooking and inspired the way she runs her catering business, Harvesting the Feast. “I see my catering style as slightly gourmet, but family style. It’s a good, hearty meal and that feeling that you get from sharing a meal together with friends and family. I love banquet-style catering, where people pass food around the table and

talk about it – to me, it adds warmth to an event.” Lyn came to Australia when she was 21 and after working in restaurants and a catering business in Kalgoorlie for seven years, she “threw a dart in the map and came to Victoria”. Once she found herself on this side of the country, it wasn’t long before Lyn decided to start her own catering business. Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2017/18 – 19

Above: Something for the sweet-tooth: Lyn’s individual pavlovas topped with vanilla bean cream strawberries and passion fruit. Left: a Harvesting the Feast light luncheon, perfect for a business meeting or get-together with friends and family. Photos courtesy Sam Hicks Marketing and Photography.

“My first event was here at the Fawcett Hall, it was a 50th birthday, and there were about 80 people. That was before we had the kitchen or even running water, I had a little marquee set up out the back – it was in the middle of winter and freezing cold. It was a total success, everyone loved it, and every event I have catered since has helped me grow and learn so much more.” Since settling in Alexandra eight years ago, Lyn has chosen to grow Harvesting the Feast slowly, working it around her family and the demands of raising four kids. She still operates out of the Fawcett Hall, which now has an extension with a commercial kitchen 20 – Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2017/18

and a woodfire pizza oven out the back overlooking Fawcett’s idyllic pastures. Lyn puts the hall’s pizza oven to good use on the third Friday and Saturday nights every month from April to October with her pizza nights, which are full of good food, chatter, and cosiness. Lyn also sponsors and caters the annual Fawcett Hall autumn dinner fundraiser at the end of May as a way to give thanks for the support she has received from the hall and associated community. Growing her catering business gradually has also allowed Lyn to adhere steadfastly to her ‘keep it local’ ethos. “It’s about knowing where

your food comes from, knowing what’s in your food, and knowing what chemicals have been put into your food. Not only do you get freshness and great flavour, but you get good health benefits from local produce.” Like her parents and grandparents in New Zealand, Lyn grows and raises as much of her own food as possible and uses her own produce for catering events. “I have pigs, sheep, cows, chickens, and then my veggie patch as well. I have a huge amount of strawberries so when it’s strawberry season I use my own fresh strawberries because you can’t beat them. And then all the herbs I use come from my own garden.”

While Lyn strives to give her customers in the Murrindindi Shire the warm feelings she associates with groups of people dining together, she hasn’t forgotten her roots. Eating with her own family is something she still holds dear, and she tries to travel back to New Zealand at least once a year to attend family gatherings – often still at her grandparents’ house – to catch up and bond over comforting, homemade food. One day, Lyn hopes that she’ll be doing the same for her children. “That’s what I’m looking forward to: eventually I hope that they’ll be coming home to me and having the big family dinners like I used to do.” For more information go to harvestingthefeast.com.au

Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2017/18 – 23

By Emily Friedel WHAT COULD a bag made out of an old bed sheet lead to? The people at the heart of Boomerang Bags Alexandra hope that reusable bags made out of recycled or unwanted materials could spark a greater awareness of environmental issues and widespread everyday lifestyle changes to tackle them. Boomerang Bags was started in 2013 by two Queenslanders, Tania Potts and Jordyn de Boer, who wanted to reduce the environmental impact of plastics in their town. Now there are over 475 communities around the globe participating in Boomerang Bags and contributing to the effort to eradicate single-use plastic bags. Alexandra has proudly made its way onto that list of Boomerang Bag towns. Over the past twelve months, Boomerang Bags Alexandra has gone from a conversation between business partners Mish Farkashazy and Sasha Barrow to a communitywide movement involving people from all walks of life. It seems that the philosophy behind Boomerang Bags is one that has clicked with locals, both young and old. “My son, he’s nine, loves making the non-sew bag, which is just made using a t-shirt and tied up. He made nine in two days. I actually had to keep a bit of an eye on him because he was taking clothes out of his drawer and cutting up a lot of quite good t-shirts!“ Mish says with a laugh.

Above: some happy customers making use of the ‘Borrow and Bring Back’ Boomerang Bags at the Alexandra Fruit and Vegetable Shop. Page 23: participants at a Boomerang Bags Alexandra workshop at CEACA. Photo courtesy Mish Farkashazy.

“I was talking to the mother of a young woman who’d be in her 20s, and she said her daughter had never sewn before. But because of Boomerang Bags, this young woman asked her mum to get the sewing machine out and has now sewn 15 Boomerang Bags. It’s also nice that this movement is reviving some of these skills that had perhaps gone a bit out of fashion,” says Lucy Bond, who is among those helping to coordinate the project.

Jenny Coombs (L) and Jade Mitchell (R) at Alexandra Newsagency proudly displaying their Boomerang Bag stand. Photo courtesy Lucy Bond. Aside from those who have pulled out their sewing machines to make bags, support from the community has come in the form of donated fabric, donated sewing machines and other equipment, and participation in workshops to prepare ready-to-sew kits, with CEACA providing the workshop space for free. “I think it’s just a fantastic idea. Apart from it being a really good idea for the environment, it was a way for me to get involved in the community. I’m retired, but I am very reluctant to volunteer for structured programs such as ‘Meals on Wheels’. Boomerang Bags is a way for me to give my time, effort, and skills in a flexible way for a very worthwhile project,” says Vicki Ellis who has attended several

workshops and sews bags at home. “I found myself landed with the printing job at the workshops, which suited me fine. That’s the beauty: you don’t have to be able to sew to become involved, you can cut fabric, or even just go through the fabrics to find out what’s suitable, bundle up the kits, or iron – there’s always lots of ironing to be done. There’s a job for anybody. Even the little ones get there, and we teach them how to rip fabric.” Many local businesses have also jumped on board, happy to encourage the use of reusable bags. Ready-to-sew kits can be picked up and returned to Nanny Jan’s Third Drawer Down, Inspire on Grant, and CEACA. Free ‘Borrow and

Bring Back’ Boomerang Bags are available at the Alexandra Fruit and Vegetable Shop, Newsagency, and Alexandra Library – anyone is welcome to take one to keep and reuse (or return), but the idea is that these bags stay within the community. ‘Bought to Support’ bags, which are $5 each, are available at the Grant Street Grocer, Nanny Jan’s Third Drawer Down, and at Dindi Naturals. These bags are the purchaser’s to do with as they please, and with Christmas approaching, the ‘Bought to Support’ bags make a great alternative to paper gift bags or wrapping paper, or even make lovely gifts themselves. Wherever you get them from, Mish and Lucy say that the key to success with

reusable bags lies in the ‘reusable’ part. “I would very much hope that over time bringing your reusable bag becomes the norm and that the single-use disposable bag becomes a thing of the past. And it’s not so much about whether it’s a Boomerang Bag or another bag, it’s just that it’s that same bag being reused and keeping plastic bags out of landfill and out of our oceans. I think it’s just making that commitment to setting up a system, so you do remember to use them,” Lucy says. “All my reusable bags are in the car, and once I’ve taken them in the house, I make sure they go back in the car, and I make sure they’re in the front of the car, so I can see them and grab them,” Mish says. Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2017/18 – 25

bags over

Mish Farkashazy says that people shouldn’t be put off getting involved in Boomerang Bags by a lack of sewing skills: “We don’t care about perfection, as long as it’s usable it really doesn’t matter how skilled you are.” Mish and Lucy also know the long-term success of Boomerang Bags Alexandra is reliant on ongoing community involvement and want everyone to know they’re welcome to participate however they like, even if it’s just picking up a free bag and (re)using it or donating unwanted fabric. “Even my husband’s got involved because the tables at CEACA are a bit low for things like ironing, so he

Mish and Lucy hope that any contribution to the movement, no matter how small, will inspire other adjustments towards an environmentally friendly lifestyle, all of which add up, especially when they spread throughout the community.

has a flow-on effect, because it’s really satisfying. And there’s then that desire to do more, which can lead to bringing your own reusable cup to the coffee shop, to getting a compost or a worm farm going or sorting your recycling more carefully. It’s about incremental steps and doing what’s achievable for your household,” Lucy says.

“As people become more aware of one issue and perhaps make a change, that

feel so small in the face of environmental issues, but projects like Boomerang Bags allow the community to work together for a collective impact and provide a springboard for conversations and action.” “Who knows where a bag made from an old bed sheet could take us!” For more information go to www.facebook.com/ boomerangbagsalexandra or call Lucy on 0400 223 113.

By Carol Hopkins “WHAT DO you do with all your spare time?” is a question commonly asked of retired people. And, certainly, for many retirees, the loss of work and family responsibilities can leave a big gap in their lives. However, retirees who have joined Murrindindi East U3A find they have no problem filling in their time with over 30 courses and activities on offer to keep them socially, mentally and physically active. In any given month, members could find themselves visiting a winery, exercising to music, discussing a book, brushing up their computer skills, learning about Australian history, going on a bush walk or making sushi.

Page 31: U3A birdwatching group takes a walk along Granny’s Lane, near Alexandra. Above: Carol Hopkins (right) teaches Elizabeth Longham about Facebook. Below: Chris Clark (left) and Helen Grant practice making fresh pasta.

As Greta Vallance, Secretary of Murrrindindi East U3A says, “There’s no reason for people to feel bored and isolated in their retirement. Our organisation offers a wealth of opportunities for people to learn and experience something new in a friendly, relaxed environment.” All activities are no cost, or low cost, and are run by volunteers, usually U3A members. “We actively encourage our members to share their particular interests, knowledge and skills with others,” Greta says. “For example, next year we have two artists running courses on printmaking and drawing, a 4WD enthusiast organising day trips, a history buff showing us how to research our local area and an information technology expert teaching computer skills.” U3A stands for University of the Third Age. Its aim is to encourage people over 50 to stay mentally, physically and socially active in their retirement years. Although it is called a ‘university’, there are no entry requirements, no exams and no awards are given. It is about learning for the love of it and, in the process, having fun and meeting new people. The ‘third age’ simply refers to the time of life when the stages of childhood, and then work and family responsibilities, are largely over. “Some people are put off by the term ‘university’,” Greta says, “but we are not an academic institution at all. We are a

community of people sharing our knowledge and skills which was the original meaning of the word.” For many of the courses and activities, such as birdwatching, bushwalking, 4WDriving, winery visits and concerts, there’s not a classroom, lecturer or PowerPoint presentation in sight. Even those courses based at the U3A campus emphasise informal, shared learning based on participants’ needs. As well, there are those activities like ‘Happy Hour’ that are purely social. Regardless of the activity, they all provide opportunities for members to talk, laugh and enjoy the company of others. “We find from our feedback forms that this aspect of U3A is particularly valued by our members,” Greta says. The Murrindindindi East group also runs interstate bus trips. In 2017, members enjoyed a week in Adelaide and surrounding areas. For 2018, the group has organised a trip to the Blue Mountains. “Our interstate bus trips are extremely popular with places filling up almost as soon as the trip is announced,” Greta says. As well as joining the local U3A program, members can also enrol in U3A Online. This is a ‘virtual’ University of the Third Age delivering a wide range of educational programs via the internet. All that’s needed to take part is a computer, internet access and some basic computer skills. There are over 60 courses on offer covering topics such as history, science, nature, literature, world affairs and philosophy to name a few. Being able to study at home is a boon to people who live in remote areas or have mobility problems.

U3A Online is a separate entity to Murrindindi East U3A and for a yearly fee of $35 members get access to as many online courses as they wish. More information is available at u3aonline.org.au. The University of the Third Age was established in France in 1973, but by the early 1980s, it had spread throughout the world, arriving in Australia in 1984. There are now over 300 U3A groups and 300,000 members right across Australia with over 100 groups and 33,000 members in Victoria alone. Murrindindi East U3A was formed seven years ago. From small beginnings, it has now grown to 110 members with a further recruitment drive about to get underway. To attract new members, and to keep existing ones, the group regularly revises its educational program. For 2018, fifteen new courses and activities have been added to the program covering topics such as creative writing, making greeting cards, art, bushwalking, computer skills, playing darts, 4WDriving, cooking and meeting local artists.

Above: Elizabeth Longham (right) and Helen and Howard Paix try to identify herbs. Below: Bob Scott and Greta Vallance sample the wines at Little River Winery.

It costs only $30 a year for individuals or $50 for couples to join the group, and you then have access to as many free courses and activities as you wish. You can enrol online at murrindindieastu3A.org.au or pick up the latest brochure in Alexandra at the Visitor Information Centre, the library or Goulburn River Books. Enrolment Day for 2018 is on Friday 12 January from 10am to 3pm at the U3A Campus in the Old Alexandra Hospital building, 20 Cooper St Alexandra. However, if you can’t make that date, you can enrol at any time using the membership form on the website or brochure. Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2017/18 – 31

AT ALEXANDRA PRO RODEO THIS SUMMER, man (and woman and child) will be pitted against beast in feats of strength and agility at the Alexandra Pro Rodeo. The best professional riders on the circuit will test their skills on the most formidable animals in contests that are sure to have the crowd on the edges of their seats. Both human and animal competitors are highly trained and, on top of that, the rodeo livestock is selectively bred for bucking – with both sides armed with ample athletic prowess, they are guaranteed to put on a great show. “We’ve been breeding bucking horses for over 30 years and same with the bulls,” says Gary McPhee of McPhee Rodeo Company. “We have one mare in the saddle bronc ride at Alexandra who has been six times saddle bronc horse of the year; then we have another one that has been bareback horse of the year.”

with the seasoned pros, some youngsters will showcase their riding skills (on appropriately sized steeds) in the junior bareback and barrel racing events.

And while the eight-second qualifying time may not sound like much to the uninitiated, a lot of excitement can be packed into that tiny period, especially if you’re sitting on an animal that is doing everything in its power to get you off its back.

“The ponies have to weigh over 200 kilos for the junior rodeo events, and when the kids enter, we get their weight and size and match them up to the ponies, so we don’t have a big kid on a little pony or anything like that,” Gary says.

“I have rodeoed for nearly all my life; when you’re in the rhythm and you know what you’re doing it’s sort of like riding a showjumping horse, there are things that you do to make it easier to ride. But on some horses, eight seconds feels like eight hours. Not every horse bucks the same, they learn their own little tricks, you’ve just got to know what to do and when to do it,” Gary says.

With keen competitors of all ages and an action-packed schedule, the Alexandra Pro Rodeo promises to be an evening of excitement for the whole family. “It’ll be a really good show, Alexandra – about four hours of non-stop entertainment,” Gary says.

The rodeo program includes bareback, saddle bronc, bull riding, team roping, steer wrestling and barrel racing. Along

Alexandra Pro Rodeo will be held on 13 January 2018 from 6pm (gates open 4pm) at Dame Pattie Menzies Centre, entry opposit Yenkens in Station Street. For more information phone Andrew Embling 0418 266 038.

By Gazza from Eildon Bait & Tackle Eildon Pondage is a great spot for new and old anglers alike; it’s well stocked, has excellent access for families with children and the older angler that has difficulty with the steep banks of a river. A walking track goes completely around the Lower Pondage and is about 4 km for a circuit; there are also roadways and jetties that add to its accessibility.

On the opposite side of the pondage and lower down is a floating jetty and barbecue area, which proves to be popular as well.

The upper part of the Lower Pondage and the football oval are other areas worth targeting with lures and baits, however you do need to be aware that during the warmer months when the water is used for irrigation or generating power these areas can suddenly start flowing quite quickly and make bait fishing a little

difficult so stick with the lures when this occurs. Access for families in the Upper Pondage is quite good especially behind the Eildon Pondage Holiday Park where many anglers have enjoyed landing a trophy trout or two – here Power Bait, dough, lure and occasionally worms are the go. Right round both the Upper and Lower Pondage there are many picnic areas and tables for those that just want to enjoy the atmosphere of a relaxing visit to the country with a great view of the water and all that it beholds. Catch you later, Gazza

Lower Pondage. Two good reasons for this are: trout often cruise along this area when the water levels are just right, and there are no major obstacles to foul up a wayward cast. The Wonder Krocs, Tassie Devils and small Hard Bodies have a good hook up rate in this area.

For the more adventurous young angler who would like to have a crack at lure fishing, then I would suggest heading down to the long grassy banks of Bourke Street near the gates of the

in a scrubby or a bit of Power Bait. The other advantage is the facilities that are right behind you, such as a great play ground, a rotunda with barbecues and toilets just in case the youngest of anglers lack the attention span required to successfully land a trout.

Water activities

If you’re feeling really keen, you can continue from Point Mibus onto Bedrock Creek and return via the steep ascent up Estate Spur. At this time of year be sure to wear a hat and sunscreen, carry plenty of water and let someone know where you’re going.

Situated around the deep blue waters of Lake Eildon, Fraser is a great place for water activities at this time of year. Visitors and locals can easily access the lake from the day visitor and camping areas to go fishing, kayaking, canoeing, powerboating, water skiing, jet skiing and swimming. There are multiple boat ramps in the Fraser block, providing easy access to the lake at different water levels throughout the year. Walks For those of you who prefer dry land, there are plenty of walks on offer. The Bolte Bay Track to Point Mibus is a must-do for the perfect 38 – Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2017/18

Great for a family adventure and easy to get to, the track links Fraser’s three camping areas – Lakeside, Candlebark and Devils Cove Camping Area. During peak holiday periods, Parks Victoria will run Junior Ranger activities in the Fraser block. From discovery walks and games to outdoor crafternoon sessions, our rangers lead fun activities for children aged six to 12. See them for park information and if you have any questions during your visit. Campfire safety Every summer bushfires start from unattended and illegal campfires. Follow these simple instructions to make sure you’re not posing a bushfire risk: • only light campfires in designated Parks Victoria fire places • never leave a campfire unattended • always have an adult supervising the fire

EILDON HAS been selected to host the 2018 National Canoe Slalom and Wild Water Championship on 4th to 12th January 2018. This event will bring elite athletes, Olympians and world champions from all over Australia to compete on the iconic Goulburn River. Canoe slalom and wild water competitions have long been a part of Australia’s history, with paddlers being involved at an international level for more than 30 years. This year Australia’s own Jessica Fox will be a special 40 – Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2017/18

guest – she has competed at two Olympic Games, winning silver and bronze, and is currently one of the top three paddlers in the world in canoe slalom. The event will also incorporate the Australian Junior Championships to be conducted over three days. Kids aged between eight to 18 will be representing their schools in both wild water and canoe slalom events. Competitors in the canoe slalom will negotiate their way through a series of both upstream and downstream

gates, with points being added to their times for missing or touching a gate. Wild water competitors will engage in both short and long sprints through a series of rapids. ‘Boater Cross’ will be introduced for the first time to an Australian National event. This is an exciting new sport receiving a lot of attention both here and overseas. It involves groups of four competitors launching their boats off a 10 to 12 foot ramp into the water then navigating through several gates and

completing a mandatory roll during the run. This adrenalin-filled event is well worth watching! Grab a picnic blanket or chair and sit in the shade of the trees lining the beautiful Goulburn River – it will be a great day out with food, drink and vantage points available at The Outdoor Education Group, 716 Back Eildon Road and Snobs Creek Estate Winery, 486 Goulburn Valley Highway, Eildon. Events run from 9am to 12pm and 1pm to 4pm on all days. (see ad p39)

THERE’S A lot of action in Kinglake West at the moment – with a lot more to come – with Kinglake Forest Adventures now open to the general public for weekend adventures. Owners Colin and Michelle French made the decision in 2016, to expand their existing school camp business (previously known as Kinglake Ranges Wilderness Camp) by opening their facilities on weekends and school and public holidays to families and action seekers. It’s a move that locals are applauding as it promises to bring significant benefit to the community through increasing local tourism. “We wanted to create an attraction that uniquely shared the experience of our forest and that proudly represented the parks and forests of the Kinglake Ranges” says Colin. “As an attraction, it will bring people to the area for a day and weekend stays which will ultimately benefit other businesses and increase local employment.” An adventure oasis With Kinglake Forest Adventures located on 800 hectares of forest, there are plenty of activities that people of all ages and abilities can experience. As an all-encompassing nature based adventure oasis, adventurers can get a taste of sky high thrills with challenging tree climbs, swing bridges, soaring zip lines, a flying fox and daring free fall jumps. For the speed demons (or the cruisers) they can hurtle (or turtle) on the mountain bike tracks and skill up at the bike clinics. “All our activities from the tree top challenges to the mountain bike riding are progression based so are perfect for beginners to the more advanced,” says Colin. “We have families with young kids, groups of friends and even work teams coming here to test their limits, face their fears and have some good old fashioned, fresh aired fun. Those who prefer to stick closer to the ground, can hang out in the recreation arena flinging frisbees, kicking the hacky sack or balancing on our slacklines. They can also meander with the resident wallabies or journey along the banks of the King Parrot Creek, amidst century old ferns listening to the unique interpretive tours.” “Our interpretive experience apps offer visitors a forest experience with a difference,”

says Colin. “Via our easy downloadable app you can journey through the forest learning of the surroundings and its inhabitants, the ancient history of the area or hearing of the more recent heartbreaking stories of Black Saturday. Best of all each of the three tours are downloadable in English, Mandarin and Hindi.” There is certainly a lot of history in the area with the forest once an ancient ocean floor and the more recent Black Saturday Fires that destroyed the original camp in 2009. Visitors also can view time-lapse footage in the Discovery Centre of the regeneration over the years since the fires. “Kinglake Forest Adventures is the perfect location for anyone looking to escape the crowds and spend time with their tribe. We wanted to create a place where real connections and lasting memories can be made. Outdoors, in the fresh air and in person” said Colin. Local tourism The business itself has already provided a number of new job opportunities in the preparation of getting Kinglake Forest Adventures ready for action. This included building swing bridges, zip lines, a flying fox and other tree top challenges and the creation of different mountain bike tracks suitable for all ages and levels. “Moving forward our staff and suppliers will also represent a cross section of the community from local mums and students in various service roles, outdoor recreational specialists facilitating activities to the tradies responsible for ongoing maintenance and butchers and bakers supplying goods for our camps”, says Colin. Colin and his team have found the whole experience of creating this new forest precinct, for people to enjoy nature in a safe and joyful environment, very rewarding. “I am so grateful to be working with such a fantastic team that works largely ‘outside the box’ and has a new idea, a new way and a different job come their way almost on a daily basis. It’s challenging and energising and requires a really strong and supportive culture. Which is exactly how it is,” says Colin. Kinglake Forest Adventures officially opened in September and is open on weekends, school holidays and public holidays. You can book your visit in online via www. kinglakeforestadventures.com.au

EARLY SUMMER is a wonderful time for wandering through Marysville’s verdant forests. With the days getting longer and the remnants of spring rain still feeding waterfalls, taking a stroll in the cool bush is especially rejuvenating at this time of year. Lady Talbot Drive is a stone’s throw from Marysville town centre and offers walking trails that will delight any nature lover. The journey to the trail heads is a treat in itself, with striking views of skeletalised mountain ash rising out of a sea of tree ferns. There are also several picnic spots along Lady Talbot Drive if you fancy a bite by

the clear waters of the Taggerty River. There are four trails along Lady Talbot Drive: Keppel Falls, Phantom Falls, Taggerty Cascades, and The Beeches (unfortunately The Beeches was closed at the time of writing, so this article only covers the first three trails). The walks are all unique and surprisingly different given how close they are to one another, so it’s worth exploring each of them. The Keppel and Phantom Falls trail heads are accessible with two-wheel drive when dry, but four-wheel drive is best to reach Taggerty Cascades and The Beeches. You can find more information about

these walks and others around Marysville at the Marysville Lake Mountain Tourist Information Centre or on the free Visit Marysville app, available through iTunes or Google Play. Keppel Falls Distance: 2 km, approximately 45 minutes return. The winding trail to Keppel Falls is flanked by towering walls of vegetation, with the odd gap where you can pause to admire the neighbouring mountain and the Taggerty River running through the valley below. Most of the track is clear and easy to walk, but there are a couple of short,

steep patches that will get your legs working, and the odd fallen tree trunk to negotiate.

This trail plunges you into the dense temperate rainforest, and tree fern fronds arch over much of the path.

The trail ends with a fenced wooden platform that provides the perfect spot to watch the water rushing down Keppel Falls and soak in the serene forest atmosphere.

There are also two bridge crossings that provide rest stops with glorious scenery: the first lets you gaze along the Taggerty River as it courses through the undergrowth and the second gives you a bird’s eye view of the valley.

Phantom Falls Distance: 1.6 km, approximately 45 minutes return. The Phantom Falls trail leads you up the mountain along a steep track with lots of stairs and some hairpin bends, but excellent maintenance makes it a joy to walk.

At Phantom Falls, the metal viewing platform reaches out close to the water so you can see it crashing down the nearby granite rocks then disappearing below. Taggerty Cascades Distance: 250 m, approximately 20

minutes return. The Taggerty Cascades trail runs alongside the Taggerty River as it plunges down the valley. The track is moderately steep with stairs most of the way. The trail takes you through a cool, dark mass of tree ferns and moss-covered tree trunks. There are a few spots offering clear views of the Taggerty River diving down small waterfalls. At the bottom of the trail, there is a metal bridge across the river where you can watch the water tumble down boulders into a pool surrounded by towering myrtle beeches.

By Emily Friedel MANY OF us have gone through life under the misconception that corn only comes in yellow. But corn’s palette covers the spectrum from pure white to ebony. And one particular cultivar, glass gem corn, can produce an entire rainbow of kernels in a single cob. Glass gem corn is an heirloom variety developed by a part-Cherokee farmer in Oklahoma. As a youth, Carl Barnes, who is now in his eighties, began exploring his Native American roots. A large part of understanding his heritage involved learning about ceremonies related to planting, harvesting, and honouring seeds. He collected and grew older varieties of corn seeds, and began to notice the reemergence of ancestral types

that some Native American tribes had lost. Barnes gave seeds from these ancestral types back to the people who had lost them, and, in return, received seeds from ancient corn varieties. Over time, Barnes selected seeds from the most colourful cobs, eventually producing the eye-catching glass gem strain. Glass gem corn is aptly named and yields cobs that look more like tightlypacked precious stones than a vegetable. It stands in such stark contrast to the common conception of corn that it almost looks fake. So much so that Google offers ‘is glass gem corn real’ and ‘glass gem corn hoax’ as suggestions for popular searches when you type in ‘glass gem corn’. Corn is a relatively easy

vegetable to grow, and the glass gem variety is no exception. Even those new to backyard produce can happily grow a crop of this aesthetically pleasing food. But there are a few tricks to getting a good crop of corn, and avoiding the disappointment of poorlypollinated, patchy cobs. Corn is a wind-pollinated plant, so planting it in blocks of at least three rows (spaced about 50cm apart) gets better results than planting in a single row. You also need a decent number of plants to ensure good pollination – 30 or more should do the trick. Around the Murrindindi Shire, late spring or early summer is a good time to get your corn in the ground. Plant seeds about 5mm deep and about 25cm apart. It’s important that all your plants

mature around the same time for optimal pollination, so it pays to plant a few seeds in each hole and keep the strongest seedling. It’s also important to have relatively fresh seed (less than a year old is best) that comes from a batch with a good germination rate. Corn grows big quite quickly, and to do this, it needs a lot of nutrients and water. Starting with compostenriched soil helps, as does weekly feeding with a seaweed-based fertiliser. A thick layer of mulch around your corn will help keep moisture in the ground without excessive watering. Glass gem corn cobs will grow to about the size of the standard cob most of us are familiar with from the supermarket or greengrocer. One way to tell if your corn Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2017/18 – 57

is ready to harvest is to feel it – if it feels about the right size and you can make out all the bumps of the kernels under the sheath, it’s probably ready to go. Shucking glass gem corn is like unwrapping Christmas presents. Each cob has its own pattern of colours, and there can be a lot of variation between cobs. It’s a lot of fun discovering the jewel-like seeds snuggled up beneath the sheath. Glass gem corn kernels have a hard outer layer, so it’s not ideal for eating off the cob like sweet corn, but does make great popcorn or can be ground down to make cornmeal. And if you think it looks too pretty to eat, which is understandable,

you can dry the cobs and use them for decoration around the house or in craft projects – they look a whole lot more impressive than wax fruit! Growing glass gem corn is not only a wonderful way to liven up your backyard produce, but it’s also a powerful reminder of the edible plant diversity that we’re losing. When you open up your first cob of glass gem corn and see those magical, rainbow-coloured kernels sparkling in the sun, you’ll never think of corn as just another yellow vegetable again.

Jamaican Cornmeal Porridge Making the cornmeal

This recipe serves 3-4 people.

First, you need to dry your harvested glass gem corn cobs. Shuck the corn and leave it in a dry, well-ventilated area on newspaper or a screen or hanging – avoid moisture as it will allow mould to grow. Drying time will depend on conditions, and can take anywhere from a week to several weeks. Slower drying helps avoid stress cracks in the kernels, which is best if you’re also saving seed for next year’s crop or plan to store the dried corn. When the corn is completely dried, remove the kernels from the cob. To make the cornmeal, grind the kernels in a grain mill or Vitamix. The dried kernels are very hard, so will be too tough for an ordinary blender and may cause it to overheat. To make our cornmeal, we used an old coffee grinder and ground the corn in very small batches. Making the porridge Once you have your cornmeal ready, it’s time to put it to good use! This recipe for Jamaican cornmeal porridge is quick and easy, and a gluten-free alternative to oats. It has a lovely, earthy flavour, and the glass gem cornmeal has a subtle colour – purple in our case.

Ingredients 2 cups water 2-3 cups coconut water or coconut milk ½ cinnamon stick ½ teaspoon salt adjust to taste 1 cup cornmeal 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ½ teaspoon nutmeg Sweetener of your choice (honey or coconut sugar work well) • Fresh fruit of your choice

• • • • • • • •

Method 1. Bring 2 cups water, 2 cups coconut water, and ½ cinnamon stick to the boil. 2. Slowly add the cornmeal, whisking as you go to prevent lumps. 3. Reduce the heat to low and cook until the mixture thickens (about 15-25 minutes), stirring regularly. Add more coconut water to adjust the consistency if you like. 4. Add vanilla extract, nutmeg, and sweetener of your choice. 5. Turn off the heat and serve porridge while it is still hot. 6. Add fresh fruit and enjoy! Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2017/18 – 59

By Emily Friedel SOMETIMES TERESA Bills stares for hours at secondhand objects she has found – scuffed-up mannequin parts, dismantled barbeques, or decommissioned kitchen utensils – before deciding what to do with them. Then, with a clear vision and a lot of elbow grease, she transforms these unwanted items into lively artworks. A pair of mannequin legs becomes part of a mosaic bar table, an old Weber gets a new life as a birdbath, and cutlery is combined with beads to create eye-catching wind chimes. Teresa’s business, Mosaics and More, started as a hobby about nine years ago. But when she moved with her family from Orbost to Thornton four years ago, it really took off. She now spends the bulk of her days working away in her shed with her hands busily creating – or mind busily pondering how to create – upcycled masterpieces out of things other people no longer want. Wind chimes made by Teresa Bills of Mosaics and More adding a little music to the Murrindindi Guide HQ garden.

“I haunt the op shops and grab anything I can find that’s different; I like coming up

with ideas to make something unusual and one-of-a-kind,” Teresa says. Along with rejuvenating the secondhand treasures she stumbles upon, Theresa also makes custom pieces using items people bring to her. “A lady came to me with some gemstones from her sister who had passed away, and she wanted a mosaic mirror with the gemstones incorporated in it, so I did that for her. I had another lady who brought in a kookaburra statue that had broken, so I incorporated that into a mirror, with the kookaburra sitting on a log,” Teresa says. Her pieces have also been sought out for surprising reasons. “I had a lady with MS [Multiple Sclerosis] come in, and she was looking for wind chimes made with just spoons, because the spoons aren’t sharp, and she said she was going to put it where she hits her head on it to remind her to do things.” To add to the fun of creating her unique pieces, Teresa likes to put a hidden quirk in each one – like a single bead that

Her love of arts and crafts is something she shares with her 16-year-old daughter, Jayde, who is on the autism spectrum. On top of being something they bond over, their creative pursuits give them both space to retreat and relax.

Much to Teresa’s delight, Jayde’s tattoo designs and polymer clay ornaments will soon be joining her own work, further adding to the diversity of the ‘and More’ part of the business, which has grown over the past nine years to include everything from dream catchers to bejewelled deer antlers.

transience of all things, and to see the futility of our desire for things to be otherwise. This next solo exhibition of photography by Cindy Ferguson (as well as again being printed on stone, amongst other media), is a collection of images from her travels: of interesting art and architecture, amongst other things, of a seemingly permanent nature. This exhibition also revisits the first two narratives, which form the basis of the trilogy, and which include photography demonstrative of our ‘Repeating Patterns’ in life, and of our ‘Roads a Little Less Travelled’ – both physically and metaphorically speaking. The art works demonstrate the beauty to be found in such journeys, despite the challenges they present. The exhibition runs from Friday 23 February to Sunday 29 April 2018.

Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2017/18 – 67

BOTANICAL ILLUSTRATION was at the very roots of the earliest voyages of discovery to Australia. Think of plant names that you are familiar with – banksia (named for Sir Joseph Banks) and grevillea (named for Charles Joseph Greville his sailing buddy) and so many more. Back in the day, the only way to categorise and study Australia’s most unusual plants was by illustrating them. Sydney Parkinson, a native of Edinburgh, drew Banks’ specimens life size as the voyage progressed but sadly died at the age of 24 in present day Jakarta on the trip home.

Above: pear by Margaret Zaal. Below: anemone flower by Donna Carter. Page 67: camellia by Donna Carter.

Life for present day botanical artists is nowhere near as demanding of life and limb. Mostly it’s a question of picking a tempting specimen, photographing it on your phone or iPad (for on-going reference if your flower doesn’t survive) and reproducing it in a way that accurately represents your subject and is creatively pleasing. The usual media are watercolor and graphite (pencil) but all other media are acceptable if less typical. The Alexandra Botanical Artists Group spends every other Tuesday engrossed in drawing and painting plants. The core group consists of Donna Carter, Alexandra resident who studied at the Botanical Gardens in Melbourne. Her work is to be represented in their 2018 calendar. Donna is a perfectionist and her work is painstaking, highly detailed and exquisite. She has a terrific understanding of colour. Margaret Zaal lives in Swanpool and drives over to spend bi-weekly painting days and restore her ‘mojo’. A natural teacher, Margaret exhibits frequently as part of North East Artisans in Benalla. Her work is vibrant, detailed and accessible. The third member of the group is Mandy Valsinger, who studied briefly at the Sydney Botanical Gardens before moving to Alexandra 15 years ago and has returned to the art form as a beginner after retirement. Mandy says, “What I gain from our group is encouragement and guidance. That doesn’t take the form of a lesson, but rather an opportunity to spend a few hours with people who have similar interests in a totally relaxed and non-judgmental atmosphere. Whenever I hit a roadblock with a project Donna and Margaret are generous with clues to find the answer. It’s amazing how the time flies – all too soon it’s time to pack up and go home. Plus Donna has great taste in music which makes our day even more pleasurable.” The group has moved location several times in search of an ideal home. It will meet as part of a new studio style concept at CEACA starting 31 October. They are very interested in finding new members, particularly those interested in botanical art and illustration but more than happy to spend the day with artists who just want a harmonious painting day. The group has a Facebook page Alexandra Botanical Artists giving further information or call Mandy on 5772 1999 or contact CEACA.
