Jo and John Kasch live and breathe trail riding. Based in Narbethong, they provide a unique service organising and leading multi-day rides for people who can bring their own horse.
Happy trails with Pack Saddling Australia
By Emily Friedel
J
o Anne and John Kasch have taken their combined 80-odd years of trail riding knowledge to create an experience unlike any other in the country. Their business, Pack Saddling Australia, focuses on multi-day rides for small groups of people who can bring their own horse. Other than their steed, guests need only pack a few essentials. Jo and John take care of the rest. “We do everything for them, all their catering, accommodation venues, support drivers to take their vehicles from point A to point B. I make sure all the cogs are turning the right way, and John’s the guide,” Jo says. “Our rides are always an easy pace. We really do love it. We ride what we love, and we love what we ride. We’re passionate about our guests and that they all have a good time, and the thing that I want is to create good memories.”
Pack Saddling Australia is now approaching its sixth year, and Jo says business is booming. But this came after a rocky start. “The first year was bushfires, so we sort of sat here for the first year thinking, ‘oh my god what have we done, we’re not going to survive this’. And then there was covid for two years. But in amongst all that, we knew we had a good product, and we just kept plugging away. Now it’s growing bigger and faster, and it’s fabulous,” Jo says. To get to where they are now, the pair has taken all they’ve learnt over 40 years of riding and bundled it into tailored experiences where others can literally come along for the ride, and guests’ only concern is how much enjoyment they can squeeze out of it. John brings to the table a wealth of trail riding expertise. Having spent 12 years as the national trainer for the Australian Trail Horse Riders Association
accreditation course, he’s certainly got the safety side of things covered. His understanding of specific routes and the capabilities of his own animals also play a crucial role in ensuring rides go smoothly. “I know where all the water troughs are, I know distances, how long it’s going to take to get there. So, it’s not just going for a horse ride; I’ve got to line the accommodation up to the distance the horses can move. I won’t take a group of people out [on a trail] if I haven’t ridden it myself because you can drive along in a car and say that’s easy, but on horseback it’s completely different. It’s a logistics nightmare sometimes,” he says with a laugh. “I’ve got three working animals that are specialised in all different areas, and which animal I take depends on where we’re going. ‘Easy’ out there, one of the mules, is the hardest worker, but his specialty is the Rail Trail – he doesn’t Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2023 / 2024 – 17
Above: Pack Saddling Australia’s staple rides include trails that showcase the Murrindindi Shire’s natural beauty as well as trails further afield, such as the Kidman Trail in South Australia. Left: John with two of his mules. He says the animals he chooses to bring depend on the trial they’re riding as each has their own personality and strengths. care about bridges, he doesn’t care about going through tunnels.” “And he instantly instils confidence in horses around him,” Jo adds. For her part, Jo is also a highly experienced trail rider and thoroughly enjoys teaching others about pack saddling. “With pack horses, it’s all about weight and balance and size. Everything that we take packing, we try to get as multifunctional as we can. Because ladies can’t pick up a 25 kilo pack bag the way John can, there’s a way as a woman we have to pack differently. I encourage women with that and support them and let them know it’s ok, you don’t have to be a man,” she says. “We run one-day workshops and twoday workshops to teach people. Before they come and do a six-day packing experience, we make sure they’ve come and done at least a one-day workshop 18 – Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2023 / 2024
Above: People from all over the country bring their horses to take advantage of the experiences offered by Pack Saddling Australia. so they get to learn the fundamentals of what it’s all about.” “And we teach them on the trail how to load the animals, how to unload the animals, how to set up camp, things to look for, things that can go wrong when you’re riding. It’s that on-thetrail knowledge and experience that we give that supports them for future adventures.” Jo also brings her culinary skills to rides with prior experience in catering for events like weddings. But on the trails, it is her ability to work magic with a camp oven and fire that comes to the fore. “I have a broad of knowledge about dietary requirements and energy levels that you need out in the forest. On any of the trips you get ample delicious tucker – we’re nearly termed as an eating club that rides horses; we eat very, very well. And people enjoy what we produce out of the camp ovens. There’s not a lot of people out there who do camp oven catering anymore,” she says.
Jo says a big priority on the rides is making sure everyone is well fed, which can include stops at eateries along the trails to fill up.
Guests come from all over the country to experience what Jo and John have to offer. The Pack Saddling Australia rides take place on several trails throughout the state and even interstate. But to give people an idea of what a ride might be like, Jo describes the ride that leaves from their home base in Narbethong.
five nights, six days, and the guests come here to our property, then we saddle up and head off. We’ve got a couple of special camps out in the bush, and when they arrive, they’ve got individual tents with deluxe swags, which are white linen sheets, doonas, Arctic blankets, full-sized pillows, carpet rugs, chairs in their tents. It’s really nice – it’s glamping. They’ll arrive at camp, their horse yards are set up, there’s water there for their horses, feed there for their horses. They just unsaddle, fuss with their horses, and sit down – the fire’s going, happy hour’s ready, and dinner’s cooking in the camp ovens.”
“We’ve got our trips out of here, which we call Mystic Mountains trips. They’re
For horse owners who find the sound of that appealing and would like to take
advantage of the collective knowledge embedded in Pack Saddling Australia, all that’s required is a chat with Jo. “You ring us up, or email us, and we say what sort of trip do you want to do – do you want to go camping, do you want to do the Great Victorian Rail Trail, the Great Southern Rail Trail down in East Gippsland, the Kidman Trail in South Australia, we’ve got all these different options available. Then we say here’s your list of what to bring, which is just your personal items and your own horse feed, and that’s it. I do everything else.” For more information or to get in touch with Jo, go to packsaddlingaustralia.com. au or email info@packsaddlingaustralia. com.au Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2023 / 2024 – 19

Kat Heneghan in front of her food van. Coming from a family of cooks, Kat has been experimenting with dishes for over 20 years. But it was only recently that she realised her dreams of being a chef.
Foodie Kat W By Emily Friedel
hen Kat Heneghan talks about food, her face lights up and she gives animated descriptions of the dishes she makes. It’s clear that Kat loves food and cooking, and the name of her food van business captures this perfectly: Foodie Kat. In fact, Kat loves cooking so much that she gave up the opportunity to be on a popular cooking show to pursue formal cookery training. “Back in 2016, My Kitchen Rules spotted one of my foodie pics on Instagram and asked me to audition. I politely turned it down to pursue my studies in commercial cookery at William Angliss Institute in Melbourne.” “My mum was like, ‘but you could be on TV’, and I said, ‘I don’t wanna be on TV, I want to cook’.” However, even with 20 years of personal cooking experience and the accredited course under her belt, Kat struggled to find a job as a chef. She says it was tough to get in without commercial cooking experience. Eventually she got her foot in the door with the help of her mum, who was very supportive of Kat’s efforts to forge a career as a chef. Through her mum’s job at Parliament House, Kat was given a chance to work in the kitchen there. The experience left a lasting impression on her. Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2023 / 2024 – 21
Kat’s husband, Dermot, came up with the lively design for the Foodie Kat van. “Parliament Head Chef Michael gave me my first opportunity in a commercial kitchen. [He] was a really, really good head chef. He never yelled; he was calm. And even if he was a bit stressed or a bit frustrated, you didn’t feel intimidated. I thought, ‘I’m going to try to be like you’. He had time for everybody. Everybody was equal. And he would compliment me, so that kind of encouraged me,” Kat says. Chef Michael’s last piece of advice to her was something Kat has held onto while starting her own food business. “When I said, ‘I want to be like you’, he said, ‘it’s not always about getting to the top, Kat, so long as you’re happy, that’s what really matters’.” Sadly, Chef Michael passed away from cancer before he got to see her come into her own with Foodie Kat, which started in October 2022 after Kat and her husband, Dermot, moved from Melbourne to Eildon. Kat says when she first made the tree change, she missed a lot of the food she could readily get from services like Uber Eats in Melbourne. So she started cooking more foods like that at home to satisfy her cravings. From there, she suggested to Dermot that they get a food van. And that’s exactly what they did. The van was white, bare and empty when they picked it up from the Daylesford area. Luckily, Dermot is a graphic designer and was soon able to fix up the aesthetics. “The short and sweet brief: make it look country and that anything could come out of it. Anything. Because I said I’m going to change my menu every week, and then it started slow, but I think people ended up loving my food. Word of mouth helped a lot,” Kat says. Kat has stayed true to her plan for an ever-changing menu. With her thoughts constantly on food and what she’ll 22 – Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2023 / 2024
Kat recently celebrated the one year anniversary of Foodie Kat at On Point Brewery in Alexandra. Kat says that without the help of the community, Foodie Kat wouldn’t have made it this far. experiment with next, there is a stream of new and exciting dishes to try, which is mixed in with longstanding favourites. Kat describes her style of cooking as “simple, hearty, and tasty food with a slightly modern twist”, and she is very fond of comfort food. The Foodie Kat menu centres on Asian fusion cuisine but brings in influences from all around the world, including Morocco and the Mediterranean. Being Filipino born, Kat also serves food inspired by her homeland. “Because the Philippines has got a Spanish background, so a lot of Spanish cooking influence, that’s also in my cooking. I introduced a Filipino dish a few months back and was scared because it was very different – it was rice noodles with prawn sauce, prawns, pork crackles, and herbs. Even my husband was a bit ‘I don’t know’, but people liked it.” For this summer, Kat relates her bold menu plans with enthusiasm. “It’ll be starting with house-marinated pork skewers with house-made pickles. We’ll have spring rolls, we’ll have my fried chicken with creamy blue cheese sauce, and the seafood boil – it’s a mixture of seafood, scalloped potatoes, corn, chorizos in herbs, lemon and garlic. People loved it when I made it, so that’s coming back. I’m also going have some Filipino-inspired grilled seafood on the menu come summertime, and that includes the stuffed squid. I also want to introduce Asian desserts. Every single day I think about food and what I’m going to make, so there’s a lot more to come. That’s why it’s called Foodie Kat!”
If that menu teaser sounds enticing, there is more good news: Kat also plans to increase the availability of her services in the local area over summer. Kat home delivers food to Eildon and Taylor Bay for free, and to Alexandra, Thornton and Rubicon for a small delivery fee – and this list is continually expanding as demand grows. The distinctive Foodie Kat van can also be found at many local markets, which will include Eildon’s Twilight Markets from December through to March. Kat is also hoping to find a spot to park the van in Eildon a couple of times a week so more people can come to her to get their foodie fix. Kat is clearly excited about growing her business and local presence over summer, alongside her growing menu. Taking Chef Michael’s advice to heart, Kat says she is doing what she loves, and she wants to share her enthusiasm for variety in food and tasting new things. “Try my food. Absolutely just try my food. Give it a chance. [My] fave Chef would have to be Anthony Bourdain. His approach to food was so wholesome, non-judgmental, and his willingness to try everything and make food bring people together. This is what one of the things I love about cooking. That at the end, it is shared with people. So I honestly believe that food brings people together.” For more information on Foodie Kat, you can find her on social media, just search for “Foodie Kat” on Facebook or @foodiekat11 on Instagram. The best way to place food orders is to send a text message to Kat on 0403 664 172. Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2023 / 2024 – 23

The Black Spur Inn – a welcoming haven By Sam Hicks
N
estled along a bend in the Maroondah Highway lies a historic gem, the Black Spur Inn. Originally constructed in 1861 as a Cobb & Co. changing station and licensed as a hotel in 1863, this charming inn is steeped in rich history and is now set for an exciting rebrand. The inn boasts a picturesque location: the surrounding landscape is a sight to behold, with a captivating mountain ash forest gracing the 30-kilometre scenic route from Healesville to Narbethong. This road, known as the Black Spur Drive, serves as a vital link connecting the idyllic Yarra Valley to the mountainous realms of Marysville and Narbethong, all nestled within the stunning Murrindindi Shire. As it winds through the woodland vistas of the Yarra Ranges, this road follows the Maroondah Highway, leading travellers on a journey up the Great Dividing Range. It’s renowned for its towering trees and awe-inspiring

intertwined with the timber industry, which played a significant role in its growth.
The Black Spur Inn, also known as the Narbethong Hotel by some, has been a welcoming haven since its inception as a licensed hotel in 1863. Over the years, it has hosted a diverse array of travellers, from hopeful gold prospectors seeking their fortune in Enochs Point, Woods Point, and Jamieson to tourists exploring the historic Black Spur Road. The inn’s name has an intriguing origin, with some attributing it to the surveyor John Wrigglesworth and others to the Welsh town of Narbeth. The area’s history is
The Black Spur Inn has weathered the trials of history, surviving two bushfires, including the devastating 1939 bushfire, where it provided refuge to the local community. Remarkably, it was once again spared during the catastrophic Black Saturday bushfires in 2009, again supporting the local community – a testament to its enduring presence in the region’s landscape. Di and Jim Kennedy, the inn’s owners since 2006, hold a deep appreciation for its historical significance.
They have welcomed a diverse range of visitors, offering a warm and friendly atmosphere. Jim also runs the popular Safetrek 4WD training business in Narbethong, adding to the inn’s appeal as a hub for adventure seekers. “History is a big part of the Inn,” say owners Di and Jim Kennedy. “It’s something we honour and offer as a tribute in our 18th year here. From the subtle items in our venue with local history books in our reception to photos on the wall showcasing those milestones in our history, the Black Spur Road, and that of our region.” Over the years, they have Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2023 / 2024 – 25

The Black Spur Inn’s strategic location makes it an ideal base to explore the surrounding natural wonders, from hiking and waterfall trails to mountain biking and nearby
attractions like Marysville and Lake Mountain. The inn’s commitment to the region extends to its menu, featuring local produce and an extensive selection of regional and national wines and beverages, including coffee made from locally roasted beans. People are encouraged to visit and reconnect with nature and be as energetic as they like. Options include just relaxing in Narbethong, hiking, exploring waterfalls and walking tracks, bringing their mountain bikes or horses, driving or riding the many four-wheel-drive tracks in the surrounding state forests, visiting nearby Marysville and Lake Mountain, or seeking water sports at Lake Eildon. Accommodation at the inn caters to various preferences, from boutique hotel rooms to lodge-style accommodation, suitable for couples, families, and groups. With 16 rooms and an atrium restaurant seating up to 120 guests, the inn is versatile and equipped with modern amenities, including electric car charging points. As the inn celebrates its 18th year under their ownership, Di and Jim have decided to embark on a rebranding

journey for the start of 2024. The Black Spur Inn will be known as Black Spur Inn – Country Guesthouse, reflecting its evolution over the years. The iconic Cobb & Co. coach, a historical symbol of the Black Spur Road, will still grace the new logo. Despite the rebranding, the inn’s commitment to exceptional customer service, quality food, and comfortable accommodation remains unwavering. The changes will be rolled out gradually over the coming months, with the historic sign at the front of the inn showcasing the new logo as a first step. To stay updated on the exciting transformation of the Black Spur Inn – Country Guesthouse, follow their social media channels. It’s a new chapter in the inn’s storied history, promising to uphold the legacy of warmth and hospitality for years to come.

Picturesque walks on country lanes Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2023 / 2024 – 29

here’s no doubt that the Murrindindi Shire is spoilt for choice when it comes to places to walk. There’s the 134-kilometre Great Victorian Rail Trail, which runs through much of the shire as well as the numerous walking tracks in the four national parks and nine state forests that are located within the shire’s boundaries. Less well known and explored are the many quiet, picturesque country lanes that wend their way through the area. These lanes often provide fresh glimpses into the beauty of our shire. Some have impressive views of mountains and lakes, others have beautiful farmland and bushland dotted with streams, dams and lagoons, and quite a few support abundant bird and animal life. While it is certainly possible to drive along these roads, there is nothing quite like walking to enable you to fully appreciate the sights, 30 – Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2023 / 2024
sounds and smells of the countryside. The walks described in this series are all relatively easy, on good gravel or bitumen surfaces, and are out-andback routes of around 1-1.5 hours requiring minimal navigation. They can easily be shortened – or in some cases lengthened – depending on your fitness and the time you have available. Even though these roads are not particularly busy, it is always best to walk facing the oncoming traffic, move off to the side of the road when you hear cars or motorbikes approaching and, if possible, wear bright clothing. It’s also a good idea, particularly in warmer weather, to have water either with you on the walk or in the car for when you return. So, instead of just walking the same old routes around town, why not go a little bit further and sample some of the delightful country lanes our shire has to offer.
Parsons Road Locality: Fawcett Distance: 4.4km return Highlights: Picturesque farmland dotted with creeks and river red gums Getting there: Take the Goulburn Valley Highway from Alexandra towards Cathkin/Yarck. From the Ampol service station on the outskirts of town, travel around 5km and then turn right into Spring Creek Road. Follow this road for 4.4km until you see the turn-off to Parsons Road on your left. Park your car on the grassy verge near this intersection.
Description: Parsons Road is a quiet gravel track lined with magnificent river red gum, box and stringybark trees that follows a creek valley through undulating farmland. Soon after you start the walk, you will cross a bridge over one of the major creeks. The road then follows a smaller tributary creek as it climbs very gently uphill. Along the way you are sure to see and hear flocks of eastern and crimson rosellas, galahs, corellas and sulphur-crested cockatoos. At the half-way point, you might also see a herd of the delightful, shaggy highland cattle. As you come to Topsy Vale Farm on your left, veer right and continue until you
reach a gate with a “Private Property” sign and warnings about trespassing. Turn around here and retrace your steps. This is a reasonably shady track, but it can become muddy in places after heavy rain.
Crystal Creek Road Locality: Whanregarwen Distance: 4.8km return or, with the extension, 7.2km return Highlights: Tall, lush forest; abundant birdlife; glimpses of Crystal Creek and the Black Range Getting there: Take the Maroondah Highway through Alexandra towards Buxton. From the tourist park on the outskirts of town, drive 2.4km and then turn right into Whanregarwen Rd. After another 2km, turn left into Crystal Creek Rd and follow that road for 6km until you see a large, cement CFA water tank in a clearing on the right. Park your car there, making sure you don’t block access to the tank. Description: This is a beautiful walk at any time of the year, but it is a particularly good choice for hot days as there is plenty of shade. The bitumen road is fringed with tall, damp forest, which supports an amazing array of birdlife including the eastern whip bird with its characteristic whip-crack call. Wonga pigeons, bowerbirds, yellow robins and fairy wrens are also common, and wallabies frequently bound across the road. From time to time, through breaks in the vegetation, you will catch glimpses of Crystal Creek and the hills of the Black Range. From the CFA water tank, walk along Crystal Creek Road for 2.4km until you
Crystal Creek Road is lined with tall, lush forest. Right: Crystal Creek as it tumbles into a pool near the road. pass the Black Range Forest sign and reach Crystal Break Rd coming off on the right. At this junction, the road becomes dirt and you can see Crystal Creek tumbling into a fern-fringed pool. This is a good place to turn around and retrace your steps. However, if you would like to extend your walk, you can continue for a further 1.2km up Crystal Creek Rd, through the forest, to a Y-intersection with an unnamed road. It’s best to turn around here as both roads soon lead into a powerline easement and pine plantations. Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2023 / 2024 – 31

Halls Flat Road Locality: Alexandra Distance: 6.2km return Highlights: Views of extensive wetlands; a glimpse of Mt Cathedral; a colony of bellbirds Getting there: From the Maroondah Highway in Alexandra, take Halls Street past the Alexandra Secondary School for 0.6km to just past Pendlebury Street. Park your car on the grassy verge on the right. Description: Although this walk starts on a bitumen section of Halls Flat Road on the fringes of Alexandra, it quickly becomes gravel and enters rolling farmland. For the next 1km or so, the undulating road follows a narrow valley with a small, tree-lined creek before
it reaches the extensive river flats and wetlands of the Goulburn River. Your elevated position on the road enables you to look over a vast network of billabongs, dotted with river red gums, and populated by water birds such as ducks, swans, cormorants, herons and egrets. Ahead of you, in the distance, you can see the distinctive shape of Mt Cathedral.
Above: View of wetlands from Halls Flat Road. Below: Pretty dam on Halls Flat Road.
Continuing down the road, you will pass cattle farms fringed by small wetlands. In spring, you may well hear the calls of one or more of the five species of frogs that make this area their home. After about 3km you will pass a pretty tree-lined dam on your left, before reaching a patch of swampy bushland where you will hear the loud, piercing chimes of the resident bellbirds. Just a little Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2023 / 2024 – 33

bit further on you will see, on your left, a rough track with a gate and an old, rusted sign saying “Soil, gravel etc”. This is a good spot to turn around and retrace your steps as the main road soon leads into private property. Although the walk has patches of shade, there are some exposed sections, so it might be best to avoid this walk in hot weather.
Thoms Lane Locality: Thornton Distance: 5km return Highlights: Farmland with rolling hills and pretty creeks; giant river red gums; some native bushland Getting there: From Thornton, take the Back Eildon Rd for 2.5km and turn left onto Thoms Lane. Park your car on the grassy verge on the right near the intersection. Description: This delightful 34 – Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2023 / 2024
walk follows a quiet gravel road through farmland threaded with creeks and dotted with magnificent river red gums. The cows in the area are quite inquisitive and may come to the fence to check you out and then follow your progress along the road. Essentially you are walking in a creek valley with rolling hills on either side. After about 1km you will reach an extensive patch of natural bushland on your right and this continues for the rest of the walk. At the head of the valley, you will come to a Y-junction in the road. Take the left-hand branch and continue for a short distance until you reach the gate of Glenmere Park. Turn around here and retrace your steps. In the next issue of the Murrindindi Guide we will feature another series of walks you can take on our country lanes. In the meantime, “Happy walking.”

ycleDindi 24 will return for the eighth time in nine years on Saturday 16 March 2024. This year’s event will again showcase the wonderfully scenic Great Victorian Rail Trail, through the shires of Murrindindi and Mansfield.
Cycle Dindi
Organised by the Rotary Clubs of Yea and Alexandra, with assistance from the Friends of the Great Victorian Rail Trail, CycleDindi 24 is a fully supported, family friendly bicycle ride that starts at either Alexandra, Merton or Yea depending on what distance the rider wishes to do and which starting location is easier to access. There are numerous choices of rides depending on where you start, where you ride to, and how long you wish to ride for. This year, pricing has increased slightly. All adults are $50 and all seniors are $40, regardless of the ride undertaken. School age children remain just $10 with group discounts available on request. Lunch is provided at a private property in Cathkin by the Goulburn River, and riders always enjoy this scenic and peaceful location. There will again be a coffee van on site for you to purchase your caffeine fix and delicious hot damper to sample. Gentle gradients along much of the route make it suitable for most ages and fitness levels. The trail is a beautiful journey, traversing rolling hills with stunning views and including a ride through the historic Cheviot Tunnel. There is fun to be had in the shearing shed, with a chance to view sheep dogs at work. This will happen at a working farm (Nutfield) right on the rail trail route and includes a delicious homemade Devonshire tea, which is
The historic Cheviot Tunnel. included in the entry price. This has been a feature of all CycleDindi rides to date and has proven to be exceptionally popular with all riders. Picturesque Gallipoli Park – perfect venue for functions By Heather Moss
T
he beautiful town of Marysville is lucky enough to have one of the most picturesque parks in the region. Gallipoli Park has been a focal point for locals and visitors since the early days of the town, stretching from Settlers Park near the Marysville Holiday Park, along the area between the Steavenson River and Falls Road to Bruno’s Sculpture Gallery on the southern boundary. Just some of the features within this lovely area include the Wisteria Walk, Gallipoli Park Lake, tennis courts, skateboard park, undercover barbecue area, the Trevor Harrow Oval and the Black Saturday Memorial. Since 2010, an outstanding feature in the park has been the Marysville Community Centre, a modern multi-functional building that has been the venue for many varied events, both private and public. This wonderful asset is the perfect solution for those locals and visitors planning an event requiring a venue with facilities for large and small private, non-profit and corporate groups. The upper level of the building consists of two function rooms 38 – Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2023 / 2024
– the Lake View Room and the Tree Fern Room – which can be made into one large space. This area is served by a fully equipped kitchen and has a wonderful view over the park and lake. It has been used for private and business events, meetings, club dinners, and weddings, just to name a few. In the lower level of the building, there are club rooms, change rooms and a full-sized sports stadium. This area also has its own kitchen, and as well as being set up for basketball, volleyball, badminton and netball, it is also used for larger events such as the Alexandra Secondary College Deb Ball and, of course, the annual Marysville Music Festival. The Marysville Community Market is held in Settlers Park every second Sunday from September to May. A recent initiative is the introduction of Twilight Markets to be held in the stadium four times a year on long weekends – Australia Day, Labour Day, King’s Birthday and Melbourne Cup weekends. All areas of this wonderful building are available for hire at reasonable rates. Just check out our website or call or email for more information. The Whittlesea Garden Expo is coming
T
he Whittlesea Garden Expo, run by the Rotary Club of Whittlesea and held on the first weekend in March each year, is going from strength to strength.
Last year Millie Ross, from the ABC’s Gardening Australia, was our keynote speaker. This year our keynote speakers will be Melissa King from Channel 7’s Better Homes and Gardens and Chloe Thomson who is a local horticulturalist, podcaster and videographer who runs ‘Sprout School’. But just like last year, we will be having several great speakers throughout the weekend on a wide range of very interesting topics. Got a question? The Expo is the place to get an answer from one of our experts. The Expo will showcase a wide range of unusual, quality plants, garden ornaments, accessories, pots, tools, garden furniture and more. And all the while, you can be enjoying the music as you stroll around, taking in all the beautiful wares before you. Or sit and relax while you enjoy something to eat
from one of our food sellers, a coffee or an ice-cream. Have a chat with our renowned local artist, Thel Cardwell while she works. And we haven’t forgotten the children – there will be activities for them to enjoy as well. The Whittlesea Garden Expo is very much a community event and involves Rotary, the CWA, the CFA, Men’s Shed, Whittlesea Football Club and the Whittlesea Agricultural Society. It is all about the community supporting the community, so come join us, snap up a treasure and enjoy the friendly atmosphere. The entry price covers both days, so you won’t miss any presentations and if you regret not buying that special plant, you can come back! Tickets are available online through Trybooking at a discounted price. Otherwise pay at the gate. Check out our website www.wgexpo.net.au for more information or to book a stall.

Relax on the lake this summer in a Lakeview boat
Bob and Daniel Davidson of Lakeview Boat Hire standing on one of their pontoons in front of the iconic Lake Eildon dam wall. By Emily Friedel
T
here is nothing quite like cruising around Lake Eildon’s glassy water on a sunny day with a light breeze, cold drink in hand, and good company. Although this may sound like something out of reach for those who don’t have their own boat – or access to a mate’s – that’s not the case. Bob and Daniel Davidson from Lakeview Boat Hire have pontoons that can be booked with little more than a few clicks online; no boat licence needed. Bob says that for customers, being able to drive the boat and enjoy the lake in the way they choose is what makes the boat hire special.
The Lakeview Boat Hire pontoons seat eight or nine people and are built for comfort. No boat licence is needed to drive one.
“I get a lot of tourists – I get people coming from all over the world here. And they come out to this lake and they can’t believe how big it is. They just love it, and the fact that they can drive it themselves. Because most of the people that come out have never driven a boat in their lives. We just explain it all to them, and the boats are very easy to run. The motors are restricted, they only do 10 knots, which is about 19 kilometres per hour, and that’s why anyone can drive the boats. If you can drive a car, you can drive this. ” For some people, a lack of confidence in their Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2023 / 2024 – 47
The jetty where the pontoons are moored is within walking distance to El Lago Bar & Restaurant. Bob says a boat ride and a meal at El Lago go very well together.
Whatever their reasons for going out on the lake, Daniel says their boat hire customers return with smiles. boating abilities quickly dissipates with some instructions and a bit of practice. “You get the people who go out of the harbour real slow, but then they come back in real quick!” Bob says. Daniel says that the pleasure people get out of hiring a 48 – Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2023 / 2024
boat is evident when they return to the jetty. And it seems the idiom “time flies when you’re having fun” holds true for exploring Lake Eildon on a pontoon. “Definitely always have smiles at the end of a hire. They don’t know how quick times goes on the lake. A standard two-hour hire
seems like a long time but goes super quick,” Daniel says. “They come back and say, ‘oh I wish we’d taken longer’, and we say, ‘well next time you can do that!’,” Bob adds. The pontoons are certainly well-suited to longer trips for those who opt for more hire
time. Accommodating eight or nine people, the boats are steered using a wheel (rather than the outboard motor) and have cushioned seats. There are swimming ladders off the back and a Bluetooth connection to the radio so customers can play their own music. For those who want to try their luck fishing, there is a live bait tank under one of the seats that fills up with water and a fish finder on the dash (it’s BYO fishing rod, though). All requisite safety gear is also provided, and fuel is included in the hire cost. “They can bring food and drinks – we just don’t allow cooking on the boat. But a lot of people find places to pull up and have a barbecue along the bank, enjoy their day, and just go swimming
or fishing. It’s great,” Daniel says. Bob and Daniel are very familiar with the joys of spending time on the lake and love it even after working the 12-hour days that come with the warmer weather. They also sleep on the lake when on duty, running the hire business out of a nearby houseboat, so one of them is always around. Being semipermanent lake residents only seems to enhance their fondness for the place. “You look at this, who wouldn’t enjoy this?” Bob says. “We love it here. Even when the sun’s going down and the mountain ranges change colour. It’s just beautiful,” Daniel adds. Bob bought Lakeview Boat Hire in spring of 2015 and says the unique experience
it offers people has meant the service pretty much sells itself. “Just the fact that people can come out and drive the boat themselves and bring all their family. They take videos, they go home and show all their friends, their friends come up, and it’s just gone on like that for the last eight years. The word of mouth has really gone nuts.” It was after Bob had some recent health issues that Daniel came on board to keep things ticking over. “Helping out has taken a lot of stress off Dad – giving him more time to relax at home, spend time with his granddaughter,” Daniel says. Daniel even braved this past winter on the lake when Bob would normally have shut down. The steady stream of visitors looking for local activities meant the
extended opening season was a success. “We had boats out every weekend. So it was really good – makes it worthwhile coming up,” Daniel says. However, the hotter months will always mark peak season for boating on Lake Eildon’s expansive surface. The pontoons are in such demand during summer that Bob recommends booking at least two weeks in advance to get a desired timeslot. Securing the ideal boating window may involve planning around other local attractions or even a meal at El Lago, which is just a stone’s throw from the jetty. “People will book the boat for a couple of hours before they go to the restaurant for dinner. It’s a good way to do things,” Bob says. Bob and Daniel welcome groups with people of all
ages and say that they see all sorts coming out for many different reasons. There are lots of family groups with multiple generations, fishing groups, groups celebrating birthdays or other events, and even groups for work functions or parties. Ultimately, taking a pontoon out on the lake is fun for just about anyone. So, even if you haven’t driven a boat before – perhaps especially if you haven’t – this might be the summer to take the wheel and get properly acquainted with the waters of Lake Eildon. If previous customers are anything to go by, you’ll likely return from your boating adventure with a smile on your face, and possibly at greater speed than when you left. For more information on Lakeview Boat Hire or to book a pontoon online go to lakeviewboathire.com.au

full lake and the river systems having had a good flush again recently, the fishing in spring has been excellent and the outlook for summer is going to be even better with the natives in the lake.
Trout will still be active at first light and last light – the use of a down rigger or paravane to get down deeper into the colder water is the best method during the day.

Yellow belly and Murray cod are on the move with schools being found around the lake’s edges. This can be very challenging as the small saplings provide cover for the fish but also help to snag your lure, jig or bait. Trolling lures that dive from 2.5 metres to 6 metres near the banks will produce fish. Jigging vibes and soft plastic grubs in black, green, or gold around trees and rock ledges are also a great method to
The Goulburn River will most likely be at a high level with the call for irrigation, so fishing the slower, deeper water is the best option using power bait, worms, maggots, mudeye, spinner and shallow diving lures, dry and wet flies. Popular areas to fish are Thornton beach, Gilmores bridge, Mc Martins Lane, Breakaway Caravan Park, and Alexandra bridge. Rubicon River for the more adventurous
angler has a very healthy population of trout, with some escapees of Brook trout from the trout farm higher above, providing some excitement. The Acheron, Steavenson and Little Steavenson rivers are worth a look with the odd larger fish holding in some of these water ways. Eildon Pondage will have its annual stocking of trout for the school holidays, with mostly rainbow trout around the 300 to 500 gram size but there are still plenty of larger fish that will be willing to take power bait, local dough, worms, maggots, mudeye, wet and dry flies and spoon type lures. I wish everyone a Merry Christmas, have fun on the lake, pondage, and rivers, relax and most important catch a fish.

Year-round fishing opportunities in Murrindindi
T
he Shire of Murrindindi and surrounds offers some of the best recreational fishing opportunities in Victoria. This region is home to the most popular river and lake fishing destinations in Victoria – Lake Eildon and the Goulburn River near Thornton. Anglers visiting Murrindindi region, chase brown trout, rainbow trout, redfin, Murray cod and golden perch. Year-round fish and tips Brown and rainbow trout are abundant in the cool rivers and creeks of this region. Favourite methods include walking on rivers and creeks and casting lures (spinners, small diving lures and soft plastic) or fly fishing (wet fly’s yearround and dry fly fishing in the warmer months). Bait fishing is also popular which can be active (drifting a weighted worm down a river reach) or passive – sitting back and waiting for a bite, using worms, powerbait, mudeye and other local baits. Most creeks and rivers hold strong populations of trout year-round however fishing is closed between June to September to protect spawning fish (trout and salmon specific regulations – VFA). The Goulburn River from Eildon to Alexandra is regularly stocked and has been providing some incredible fishing for brown and rainbow trout in recent months. Trout are also readily caught in Lake Eildon by flat trolling tassie devils or diving lures or by using paravanes or downriggers. Trout prefer cooler and deeper water during summer so getting the lure down at this time of the year can work very well. Redfin can be found in deeper pools
of larger rivers but are most often targeted in Lake Eildon. They travel in large schools and are often found at the base of submerged trees. Here anglers use worms for bait, small jigs, blades, or lipless crankbaits. If you haven’t caught a reddie in 10 minutes, move to the next tree and repeat. Depth sounders are very handy to locate redfin schools that can pop up anywhere throughout the lake. Golden perch are most abundant in Lake Eildon and are most active in November when they school together to breed. At this time of the year, they are readily caught by trolling diving lures and bibless crankbaits just out from the bank in 2 to 4 metres depth. Golden perch also respond well to spinnerbaits or diving lures cast at snags. Golden perch in Lake Eildon can grew very large (up to 8 kg) but most fish are in the 2 to 3 kg range.
Murray cod are Australia’s largest freshwater fish that are revered by recreational fishers around the world. In the last decade, because of fish stocking, Lake Eildon has emerged as one of the best Murray cod fisheries in Australia. When conditions are right, its not uncommon to encounter several 1 metre plus Murray cod in one fishing session. Murray cod respond to many of the same lures as golden perch but make sure your lures are bigger and strong enough to withstand a Murray cod strike. In the last few years, high resolution active target sonar technology (livescope) has dramatically improved Murray cod catch rates at Lake Eildon. Murray cod are now regularly caught at night using huge surface lures, particularly in winter and at night. To read more about all the exciting things underway for fishing – check out the VFA webpage!

The mistletoebird: a special relationship between bird and plant by Carol Hopkins
A
s its name suggests, the mistletoebird has a close connection with the semiparasitic plant know as mistletoe that grows on the branches of host trees. Mistletoe is classed as semiparasitic because, while it takes water and nutrients from the tree, it is also able to produce its own food via photosynthesis. Contrary to popular belief, the mistletoe found in Australia is not an imported weed but a native plant with over 90 species occurring in a wide range of habitats across all states except Tasmania. Also contrary to popular belief, mistletoe rarely kills the trees it infests and, as we will learn later, may actually be something of an unsung hero in terms of attracting wildlife and contributing to biodiversity. So, what is the relationship between bird and plant? Well, for a start, the mistletoebird’s diet consists overwhelmingly of the berries of the
mistletoe – around 85% in fact – with nectar, insects and other berries making up the remainder. The bird’s digestive tract is perfectly designed to extract nutrition from the outer flesh of the berry while leaving the inner seed undamaged. A short gut, combined with the absence of the muscular, foodgrinding gizzard found in other birds, mean the berries pass out quickly with minimal damage from mechanical or chemical action. (It can actually take as little 5 – 20 minutes for a seed to pass through a mistletoe bird.) Obviously, this has big advantages for the mistletoe. But the advantages the bird brings to the mistletoe don’t end there. When the mistletoebird defecates, it usually perches along, not across, the tree branch making it much more likely the seeds will land on the branch rather than on the ground. The seeds are passed out in a sticky, glutinous blob, which the bird wipes onto the branch
with a twisting motion. All these factors help ensure the seeds take hold and germinate. Although other birds, such as honeyeaters, also eat mistletoe berries, none are as good as the mistletoe bird for facilitating the successful spread of the plant. One study showed that 43% more mistletoe seedlings were established from seeds passed by the mistletoebird than by those passed by the spiny-cheeked honeyeater. Not surprisingly, mistletoebirds are only found where mistletoe is growing, which is usually in areas supporting large, mature trees, although it is rare to find the birds above 1000 metres because it is too cold. The birds are locally nomadic, moving around in response to the presence of berries. They can be hard to spot as they are usually found singly or in pairs flitting about in the top of the tree canopy. Their small size – around 10cm long – also makes them hard to see. Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2023 / 2024 – 55

However, the vivid red on the male bird’s chest and rump, contrasting with his black back and white breast, may catch your eye. The female is more difficult to identify being dark grey with a whitish breast and a faint blush of red on her rump. It’s most likely you will hear the birds’ high, piercing, repetitive calls long before you see them. Mistletoebirds breed from August to April depending on their location in Australia and when the local mistletoe is bearing fruit. Their nest is a work of art – a pear-shaped purse, with a slit-like, side entrance, woven out of plant down, spider’s webs, lichen and leaves – and hung from a leafy twig. The female does most of the work building the nest and incubating a clutch of three to four eggs, but both parents get involved in feeding the young, which are ready to leave the nest about two weeks after hatching. While the mistletoebird’s status is currently listed as of “least concern”, erroneous beliefs in the past about the mistletoe plant destroying trees led to some people to try to eradicate the bird. One Australian farmer in the 1930s claimed to have killed over 1,200 mistletoebirds in six years – a shocking statistic. Now, however, we know that mistletoe – and the mistletoebird – are not harmful, but helpful, to the environment. The flowers and fruit of the plant attract a wide range of wildlife including birds, butterflies, insects, koalas, possums and sugar gliders. Additionally, many birds, including the mistletoebird, use the dense, leafy growth of the plant as a safe place to build a nest and to hide from predators and the elements. The leaf litter under a mistletoe infestation has also been found to be particularly rich in microbes, which, in turn, supports a diversity of plant and animal life.

One recent study in native woodland near Albury in NSW found that removing naturally occurring mistletoe from a designated patch of bushland resulted in bird diversity dropping by onethird in that area. In recognition of mistletoe’s role in increasing biodiversity, ecologists have started to manually place mistletoe seeds onto the branches of trees in streets and parks in inner Melbourne. The hope is that the mistletoe will attract more creatures, both great and small, to the urban environment. Let’s hope mistletoebirds are among the new visitors because there’s no doubt that these little birds are real stars in helping mistletoe to survive and flourish.

Wellbeing: less consumption may be more By Emily Friedel
R
educing consumerism is often framed as a way to lessen the enormous impact we humans have on the natural environment. And it is. According to the United Nations, unsustainable consumption is a key driver of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. But did you know that easing up on your consumption could also benefit your wellbeing? Research findings in several areas of psychology are converging to indicate that less consumption supports wellbeing, while more consumption is associated with the opposite effect. Studies on voluntary simplicity – (an anticonsumerist way of life) – suggest that deliberate choices and actions to consume less could make us more content. Published in the Journal of Positive Psychology, a 2017 systematic review (a review that aims to systematically find and appraise all relevant literature related to a research question) concluded that almost all of the 23 included studies demonstrated that voluntary simplicity was associated with greater wellbeing. It’s important to note that this finding doesn’t provide strong evidence for voluntary simplicity causing greater wellbeing – it provides evidence for a relationship between the
two. However, the overall finding is consistent with theoretical perspectives on voluntary simplicity that suggest consuming less could solve a lot of problems, including those related to pervasive societal discontent. The trend in voluntary simplicity research is also consistent with a 2014 systematic evaluation of the relationship between materialism and wellbeing, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Research. This review found that placing high
importance on material possessions was associated with lower wellbeing. A similar finding was made in separate research looking at the relationship between wellbeing and the value people place on money. Among other things, researchers have suggested that voluntary simplicity may be beneficial for our mental health by allowing us to focus on what is meaningful in life. In a similar vein, psychological needs satisfaction has been proposed as a mechanism for the benefits associated
with voluntary simplicity: a simpler life (by choice) may result in having psychological needs better fulfilled, which improves life satisfaction. In fact, surveys of voluntary simplifiers indicate their motivations for adopting such a lifestyle often revolve around meeting core psychological needs, such as having more time for relationships and community, and more time for leisure. At the other end of the spectrum, strong desires to attain and hold onto material Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2023 / 2024 – 59
possessions may be an expression of unmet psychological needs. A recent study published in 2020 in the Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry found that among people with hoarding tendencies, those who had a stronger attachment to possessions also harboured greater feelings of rejection. A much older study published in 1995 found that materialism was related to envy, public self-consciousness, and social anxiety. This research certainly gives credence to the idea that we sometimes use possessions to mask other deficiencies in our lives. Of course, Buddhists of various denominations have been warning for millenia that desiring and being attached to stuff brings about suffering. It seems like science is slowly catching up and communicating a similar message. At the very least, consuming more is probably not the best path to happiness. Also, having fewer things probably means less cleaning, which should be enough to spark joy for most people. For more information on voluntary simplicity, you can visit the Simplicity Institute website (an organisation founded by University of Melbourne researcher Dr Samuel Alexander and medical specialist Dr Simon Ussher) https://simplicityinstitute.org/

John Sharp, an ecologist and artist, is fortunate enough to be able to pursue their life’s passion both as a career and as a hobby.
Love of animals inspires work and art by Carol Hopkins
I
t’s not often you come across someone who is fortunate enough to be able to pursue their life’s passion both as a career and as a hobby. But John Sharp, an ecologist and artist, has managed to achieve this. Ever since he was a child growing up on his family’s farm at Pheasant Creek in the Kinglake district, John has been passionate about animals. And it wasn’t just the farm’s cows, sheep, chooks, ducks and dogs that stole his heart. John also used to spend a lot of time wandering through the beautiful bushland
that bordered the farm and became very fond of the native birds and animals in the area. After finishing secondary school, this love of animals led John to study zoology at the University of Melbourne. Having obtained his master’s degree in zoology in 2013, John then went on to work as a consultant ecologist and is now a senior ecologist with global consulting firm Jacobs, undertaking environmental studies, with a focus on zoology, throughout eastern Australia. Somehow, throughout this busy time, John’s passion for animals and the Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2023 / 2024 – 63
mistakes”. In both cases, once the image is completed, ink is carefully applied to the surface of the plate and then passed through a press with a sheet of paper to produce a print. The whole process can be extremely time consuming. John estimates his linocut of the wedge-tailed eagle (pictured) took 70 to 80 hours to carve out, and then another 30 to 45 minutes to produce each print. John only produces from 10 to 20 prints of each image because he wants his artworks to be limited editions. However, by making his art a family affair (his mother and father do all the framing), John saves himself and his customers a lot of money on these limited-edition pieces.
environment found another outlet – his art. From a very early age, John had shown a talent for art. This was fostered during his primary and secondary school years and culminated in one of John’s final art pieces for Year 12 being selected for the Top Arts exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. The selected work was a linocut of a forest scene entitled “The Eternal Watcher” and encouraged John to continue pursuing his art after leaving school. His artistic endeavours got a further boost when he was asked to exhibit his linocuts of the Kinglake forests after the Black Saturday bushfires in the foyer of the 2009 Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission building. John felt that the stark, blackened trunks of the 64 – Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2023 / 2024
burnt trees were a perfect subject for linocuts, and the splashes of colour from new growth imbued interest and hope. Success also came with exhibitions of both his linocuts and etchings at art shows and galleries throughout Victoria, including a solo exhibition at the former Gallery 34 in Yea. In producing his images of animals, birds or trees, John favours the techniques of linocutting or drypoint etching. With linocutting, he carves the image into a sheet of linoleum with a sharp instrument. But with drypoint etching, he uses a mounted pin to carve the image into an acetate sheet. John says that drypoint etching is “really like drawing with a pencil, but you are using a pin, and you can’t make any
Although some of John’s artworks depict trees and other plants, his primary focus has been on animals. His subjects have often been the result of his study or his work. An experiment on how possums react to predators’ scents for his Bachelor of Science degree resulted in an etching of this cheeky animal. “I spent many evenings in parks watching possums and decided to do an etching to remember them by,” John says. Similarly, his etchings of rednecked wallabies arose from the research he was doing on this species for his master’s degree in zoology. “Of the group I studied, there were several which were particular favourites of mine, and I began to miss them as
soon as my study finished. So, I decided to remember them with a series of etchings,” John explains. He even gave each of them names. A stint as a volunteer at an Elephant Rescue Park in Thailand resulted in an etching of a baby elephant. “I fell in love with the elephants and decided to do an etching of one of the youngsters,” John says. Sometimes, John is just captivated by a particular animal or bird he sees in the wild. It might be the echidnas he finds fossicking in the bush near the family farm, a spoonbill he notices trying to preen its feathers with its rounded beak, or a mother koala he spots carrying a very large baby on her back. Understandably, John is also very concerned about conservation and has
completed a series of striking works depicting animals from throughout the world that are currently endangered. One dramatic image is of the Amur leopard, which is found around the border of China and Russia. Due to poaching and habitat loss, it is now listed as critically endangered with only around 120 of these majestic creatures left in the wild in 2023. Another work depicts a Grevy’s zebra from the Horn of Africa, which is at severe risk of extinction, primarily due to being hunted for its skin. In this image, the zebra appears to be looking directly at the viewer and imploring for help. Other endangered animals in John’s print collection include the Rothchild’s giraffe from Northern Africa, the ringtailed lemur from Madagascar and the Sumatran tiger from Indonesia. John hopes that featuring these threatened
animals in his art will raise awareness of their plight. Through a combination of talent, persistence and hard work, as well as the enthusiastic support of his family, John has managed to turn his passion for animals into both a successful career and a rewarding hobby while at the same time raising awareness of the need to value and protect the wild creatures in our world. No small achievement. John has an ongoing display of his work at Yarrawood Estate winery, 1275 Melba Highway, Yarra Glen. Alternatively, you can find images of all his works on Instagram by searching johnsharp_art. Alexandra Community Christmas Tree Festival
Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2023 / 2024 – 67
Since 2014, the Alexandra Community Christmas Tree Festival has been run by a dedicated committee of volunteers. The festival now takes place in the Alexandra Shire Hall, which is filled with over 300 Chrismas trees for most of December. By Emily Friedel
D
uring December, the Alexandra Shire Hall will once again be brimming with over 300 Christmas trees. This year’s annual Alexandra Community Christmas Tree Festival will be the tenth since the Christmas Tree Festival Committee started running it. As with every other year, the 2023 festival will showcase a unique display embodying the Christmassy creativity of local businesses, community groups, schools, and anyone else who gets the urge to adorn a tree. But, like all prior festivals, this one will be held together by the hard work of the Christmas Tree Festival Committee, their many volunteer helpers, and an ample supply of Christmas spirit. “People walk in and say, ‘This isn’t just Christmas trees. It’s Christmas’,” says Pam Petersen, secretary of the Christmas Tree Festival Committee. The Christmas Tree Festival Committee began running the festival after Pam’s daughter saw a need for some extra pairs of hands to keep the event going. “It all started at St John’s Anglican Church with Father Geoff Poliness and another parishioner, Peter Pierce, with the Festival of Trees [in 2012]. I got
68 – Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2023 / 2024
involved because I went to decorate some trees, so I did that for one year. Then the second year I went back, and he was really struggling to decorate trees, so my daughter and I went up and helped him fill the rest of the trees. As we walked away, my daughter said, ‘Mum, I think we need to get involved in this,’” Pam says. So the next year, the festival was renamed the Alexandra Community Christmas Tree Festival and relocated to St John’s Hall. Back then, it was a relatively short event, taking place over a few days. These days, the festival fills up the Alexandra Shire Hall for most of December, with the first 11 days of the month dedicated to setting up. Around 2,500 visitors soak up the Christmas cheer each year, many of them taking it home with them or finding renewed enthusiasm for the festive season. “People have left and said, ‘I wasn’t going to put my tree up this year, but now I’m going to go and put my tree up because this has inspired me to do it.’ It has put people back in the spirit. I’ve known people who have suffered depression, and they come in and they feel better when they leave,” Pam says. Alexandra’s festival has also been so
successful that Pam says it has inspired many other towns to start their own. “Whittlesea now have one, and I’ve had phone calls from Murchison and another one out in the Western District. And these have been people who have just driven through, stopped, gone through the festival, and gone, ‘Our town could do this.’” Along with the trees, the Alexandra Community Christmas Tree Festival has a display of Christmas quilts from the Alexandra Quilters, a stall and, in recent years, some extra fun for the little ones. The new addition of seek-andfind games for children has been well received, partly because keeping the kids busy means their caretakers have more time to wander around the display at a leisurely pace. “Last year they had to go and find the elves. This year it will be gnomes – we hide them among the trees. That keeps the kids occupied, so the parents or grandparents can look at the trees a bit longer,” Pam says. Santa also makes scheduled appearances, much to the delight of any youngsters in the vicinity, and local kindergartens have excursions to the festival so their pint-sized pupils can experience the wonder.
Anyone can decorate one of the provided Christmas trees at no expense, but some businesses choose to go the extra mile and craft a themed tree. Along with their activities at the Shire Hall, The Christmas Tree Festival Committee has endeavoured to spread Christmas joy as far as possible by taking on the responsibility of decorating the main street of Alexandra and donating to the Embassy of Ideas Christmas lunch, which is put on specially for those who may not be able to celebrate Christmas with family or friends. Importantly, Pam says the Christmas Tree Festival is an event all community members can participate in for free – it costs nothing to decorate one of the trees provided – and patrons are only asked for a gold coin donation. It’s also an opportunity for local community groups and businesses to promote themselves, and some have gone to extra effort to make their own trees to trim. “Tyrepower made one of tyres. Hedger’s built one, which was very big and made out of wood. We had a bicycle wheel one last year that was made by WeCycle
down at the Embassy of Ideas, and the chemist did one that had reindeers made out of medication bottles,” Pam says. Although a hall full of such creative Christmas trees and decorations has an enchanting effect, behind the scenes is the much less whimsical reality of hard work. There are manual labour jobs like unpacking and assembling trees, plenty of forms to fill out, and a great deal of planning. Pam says that around a hundred volunteers help with the myriad of duties, but there is always a need for more. “We’ve had the local panel beaters for the last two years get all of his workers, and they move the collection for us [ready for set up]. We need more strong, younger volunteers because we struggle at the other end packing up because we have to move them too; it’s a mammoth job.” Pam also emphasises that the
festival relies on community support, including the simple (and enjoyable) act of attending. And with the display changing each year, there is a fresh dose of Christmas cheer on offer even for those who have been before. “Everything gets moved around, the colour scheme changes, the organisations decorate differently. The only thing that stays steady are the trees,” Pam says. And, of course, the Christmas spirit that comes with them. The Alexandra Community Christmas Tree Festival runs from 11 to 31 December, 10am to 9pm each day (closed Christmas Day). For more information or to get involved, contact Pam on 0415 476 639, email alexandraxmastreefestival@ gmail.com or go to their Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/ alexandracommunitychristmastree festival You can also wander into the hall anytime it’s open during the festival to have a chat or lend a hand.

When the shows must go on
W
ho could forget the heady days of the Covid lockdown?
One of the many casualties of this time was a planned Easter exhibition of paintings by local artist and author Bev Aisbett. The show was to take place at the gallery of Rennies at Acheron, a beautiful estate 6 kilometres from Alexandra, owned and directed by celebrated artist Marian Rennie. The Covid crisis meant that Bev and Marian had a long wait before Bev’s ‘Heartfelt’ exhibition was finally launched on the following Australia Day weekend, which featured Bev’s muchloved figurative and abstract works and sculptures by ‘Mad Queen’ Regina Dudek. As it transpired, the wait was worth it, with many visitors not only enjoying the art but also discovering the magic of the gallery, gardens and delicious fare available at the gallery café – made by Marian herself.
However, the challenges did not end there. The floods of 2022 meant that the gallery was marooned by floodwaters for many weeks. The raging waters of the Goulburn River also led to the destruction of the historical single-lane wooden bridge less than a kilometre from the gallery, which meant that access to the gallery from the direction of Taggerty was no longer available (but remains accessible from Alexandra). On the calendar for Rennies at Acheron this summer is a new show by Bev Aisbett – ‘Terra Flora Animalia’ – to be launched on Australia Day weekend. Bev’s 30 year career in the arts has been highly versatile, including cartooning, illustration, textile design, painting, sculpture, and author of self-help books for people with anxiety and depression. This year’s show sees the emergence of a new direction in Bev’s works, which now include vibrant and lively abstracts capturing the spirit and beauty of
the region, along with her signature figurative pieces. Her new colourful pieces reflect the hope and resilience of nature and local community. Bev will be sharing the exhibition space with sculptor Ann-Maree Gentile with her whimsical ceramic pieces. The ‘Terra Flora Animalia’ exhibition by Bev Aisbett is on 27 to 29 January 2024, with an opening night on Friday 26, at Rennies at Acheron, 132 Breakaway Road Acheron.
