It’s all here in the Murrindindi Shire . . . To linger in Toolangi when the winds o’ Winter blow, Is to get an aftertaste of what old Noah used to know; And to loiter in Toolangi when the suns o’ Summer bake Is to suffer from a plethora of bullock-whip and snake; But your heart is full of gladness and it makes your spirit sing Just to linger in Toolangi, in Toolangi in the spring.

CJ Dennis – Toolangi

Your heart will be full of gladness and your spirit will sing too when you visit the many beautiful gardens open this spring across the Shire of Murrindindi from Eildon to Toolangi: old established gardens to new ones, native to European. Welcome to the spring edition of the Murrindindi Guide. As the weather warms and the days grow longer, take time to check out our waterfalls, the Great Victorian Rail Trail or visit a local winery. Celebrate the opening of the fishing season at the Goulburn Fishing Festival in Eildon in September. From agricultural shows, art exhibitions, leisurely to strenuous exercise activities for the whole family, and of course something for the rev heads, it’s all here in our magazine. Happy reading!

The bloke . . . FROM TOOLANGI ONE hundred and six years have passed since Clarence Michael James Dennis, – CJ Dennis – Den (7.9.1876 to 22.6.1938), poet, journalist and author of The Sentimental Bloke, first took up residence in an old shack in the small mountain hamlet of Toolangi, now a gateway to the Shire of Murrindindi. In 1908 CJ Dennis arrived at a camp in Toolangi. In 1915 Den built ‘Arden’ on the site of the old shack he had lived in. This is the only home he is known to have owned; he lived here until his death in 1938. Extensive gardens and lawns were established by Den and his wife Biddy. Two large tulip trees border the driveway and masses of rhododendrons, azaleas and maples are framed by magnificent mountain ash. A large pond is fed by a slowly turning waterwheel. Den wrote of 62 varieties of birds many of which can still be found in the gardens. Their bird song was the inspiration for the name ‘The Singing Gardens’ – which is also the title of his last work

Den in the shack at Toolangi. of poetry and prose (mainly about birds) published in 1935. In 1965 the original house burnt down and the gardens became neglected. In 1969 Jan and Vic Williams, the present owners of The Singing Gardens, bought the property, rebuilt on the original house site and

restored the gardens to their former glory. In 2008 Jan and Vic, along with the Toolangi community, celebrated the centenary of Den first arriving in the area. A festival with a poetry competition has since been held each year, to encourage poets, young and old, to

keep alive the name of CJ Dennis. This helps to give him his rightful place alongside Henry Lawson and Banjo Patterson. This year the festival will be held on Saturday 26th October and Sunday 27th October. At 1.30pm on Saturday, awards will be presented to prize winners

through the gardens and take you into the realms of their creations. Finish the day with a country-style high tea with ’Den’ and his friends. Have a turn on the soap box and share the closing of a perfect day with a perfect poem. Now is the healing, quiet hour that fills This gay, green world with peace and grateful rest. Where lately over opalescent hills The blood of slain Day reddened all the west, Now comes at Night’s behest A glow that over all the forest spills, As with the gold of promised daffodils. Of all hours this is best. CJ Dennis – Dusk

Cafe Alex . . .

ALEXANDRA

Café Alex: feeding the community By Emily Friedel

“CUSTOMER service is the be all and end all,” says Café Alex owner, David Dimech, and it is clear in the way he greets every one of his local customers by name, that he truly believes this. The service at Café Alex, however, isn’t limited to the customer. With a philosophy of buying local produce where possible, supporting other local businesses and even giving local artists a place to display their wares, this little café is providing a great service to the wider community. Striving for the greater good and to provide the best quality food possible, you will also find only free-range, ethically produced animal products as well as fair-trade, organic, locally roasted coffee. David and his wife, Cinamon, came to Alexandra in 2009 after having worked on super yachts (‘luxury floating palaces’) for 10 years, as captain and first officer respectively. The move and dramatic change in lifestyle were driven by a desire to get back to Australian soil and away from an industry that is “not the best for the soul.” Once

David Dimech. in Alexandra they needed something to do, so bought the local taxi service and then bought the café. The pair had no experience in running a café and for the first month would go home, collapse and think: “What have we done?” As they found their feet, though, running the café became easier and more fun, with the best part for them unquestionably being meeting the customers. Recently, David and Cinamon have decided to put Café Alex on the market. This decision was largely based

on the need for the café to be open 7 days a week in order to provide the best service for the community, through serving them directly and feeding the local tourism industry. Keeping the café open every day is a task that requires a great deal of energy, something David has in abundance, but much of it goes towards active involvement in other aspects of the community including Rotary membership, heading the Alexandra Traders & Tourism Association, running the local cinema,

being on the Dame Pattie Menzies board, providing the crucial local taxi service and working on the Rubicon Outdoor Centre School Council. You may just see David and Cinamon in Café Alex one day on the other side of the business, as customers having a well-earned, relaxing cuppa . . . Whether you’re after some lovingly prepared local produce, a great cup of coffee, some local artwork, a smile or even a café of your very own, Café Alex is the place to go!

Ceaca turns 30 . . .

30 years of Adult Education in the Murrindindi Shire IN 1983 there was a vision, an empty building and two women, Virginia Linton-Smith and Joan Broughan. Their aspiration was to bring adult education to Alexandra. The first classes held included oil painting, leather craft, bread making and quilting. The vision took shape and the Continuing Education and Arts Centre of Alexandra (CEACA) was formed.

CEACA at Dame Pattie Menzies before relocation to the Old Court House in Downey Street (below) in 1990.

In 1990 CEACA relocated to the Old Court House on Downey Street and two years later CEACA became a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) which allowed courses to be offered such as Certificate III in Aged Care. In 2013, 30 years after the establishment of CEACA, there are many different areas of accredited courses on offer to best suit the needs of the community. Courses include Certificate III in Children’s Services, Education Support and Aged Care, Certificate IV in Disability and Training and Assessment with more courses planned for the future, such as Certificate IV in Home and Community Care and Diploma of Children’s Services. The provision of short personal interest courses continues throughout each term. In another leap forward, CEACA became registered with the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) in May 2013 which will allow CEACA to not only deliver accredited training in Victoria but Australia wide. CEACA is constantly evolving to best suit the needs of the community and changes in technology and will continue to do so in the years to come. Keep up-to-date with CEACA on their Facebook page or website. CEACA will launch its 30th year celebrations on 1st to 8th September during Adult Learners Week.

Arty facts . . .

MEG HERES MEG Heres became an artist by accident. Meg and her late husband enrolled in hobby classes, Meg ending up in the drawing and painting class as it was the only one with vacancies! Meg was born in Balranald, spending most of her childhood in outback New South Wales, and now resides in Yea. Painting as a full-time occupation since 1968, she received early training from a number of excellent, well known and respected artists. In the 1980’s she studied Impressionism and modern art at Monash University. By this time she knew that her future occupation was to be a full-time professional artist. Currently Meg’s work reflects the influence of the strong use of colour in oils, pastels and acrylics and her inspiration is the beauty that surrounds us every day. For many years Meg was guest artist demonstrator at the noted Camberwell Herald Sun Rotary Art Show.

Bubbles . . . AUSTRALIAN SPARKLING WINE SHOW, MARYSVILLE THE Australian Sparkling Wine Show held in Marysville on Tuesday 22nd to Friday 25th October is the only dedicated sparkling wine show in Australia. The inaugural event was held in 2010 and was conceived as part of the ongoing program to rebuild the region following the 2009 bushfires. Australian producers of sparkling wines are encouraged to select their best drop and enter the show. The competition gives producers an opportunity to gain national and international recognition and winners can promote their product as ‘Australia’s best’. Some of the country’s most renowned wine connoisseurs will judge the competition, with winners announced at a gala dinner on Friday 25th October to be held at the Marysville Community Centre.

A live interview with international wine writer Jancis Robinson will form part of the event, via videolink from the USA.

Whilst primarily a wine industry event there are a number of other events that highlight all that the region has to offer. These activities include: meet the locals community night; business breakfast; bubbles, beer and tapas evening; and gala awards dinner. The guest speakers

for the business breakfast will be Andrew Forrest of Fortescue Metals Group Ltd, and Paralympic cyclist Carole Cook. This year also sees the inclusion of an industry conference ‘trends, trade and technology’. The conference will be open to all members of the wine industry and includes a range of master classes, guest speakers and other exciting events. The committee of the Australian Sparkling Wine Show is excited to announce that the keynote speaker for the conference will be The Australian Wine Communicator for the Year, Tyson Stelzer. A live interview with international wine writer Jancis Robinson will also form part of the event, via videolink from the USA. With sparkling wine producers from all over Australia entering the show the event has now become one of the most prestigious wine competitions on the national wine calendar. The beauty of Bindaree CHRISTOPHER and Marcia Lamrock moved to “Bindaree” in January 1996. They were captivated by the peace and tranquillity of the property, along with the spectacular mountain views and native bird life. The garden had been neglected for many years with overgrown beds, ivy and blackberries taking over what was once a beautifully landscaped native garden. Seventeen years on, with Marcia’s love of gardening, colour, and design, the garden has matured. The garden now has over twelve thousand bulbs, a sustainable vegetable and herb garden and ‘coloured rooms’ as you walk through, all taking in the breathtaking views. There are a number of

spots to sit back and enjoy the garden’s mature trees, roses, orchard and rural sculpture pieces. New additions to the garden include a Japanese inspired outdoor lounge on the old tennis court, the gardener’s work shed and expansion of some of the existing garden beds. The garden is in the Australian Open Garden Scheme and will be open on 19th and 20th October from 10am to 4pm. Not only will you get to enjoy this garden, but why not join Christopher and Marcia for morning and afternoon tea or lunch, or find your own special place to sit and enjoy. All money raised supports ‘Dindi’ – an early childhood intervention program for special needs children. Also on offer will be plants, flowers, sculptures and

gardening accessories. For those with an interest in British classic sports cars there will be a few on display. A private restoration facility will be open and you will see a small select group of cars in the process of restoration. Permaculture . . . The Humpy Creek minigreens system By Emily Friedel & Rohan Dodds WHEN it comes to growing as much of our own food as possible, many of our successes and exciting new ideas have come about through trial and error, plain error or sheer luck. Sheer luck is by far the best method of coming to interesting conclusions regarding our growing methods, as it doesn’t usually go hand in hand with swearing very loudly and throwing anything within reaching distance into the creek in a fit of anger. Recently (early Autumn to be precise), sheer luck, good fortune with weather patterns and an excess of seed produced over summer,

PART 4 ~ MINIGREENS we are finding that this is beneficial for the plants, beneficial for us and beneficial for the soil.

resulted in a new method – for us, we are in no way claiming that we discovered anything new - of producing even more salad greens than we have ever had before.

The method is simple: • take a cleared garden bed, possibly turned with new compost, slow release organic fertiliser, or blood and bone,

Growing seedlings in tubs, trays, and jiffy pots can be frustrating. It also creates additional expenses: buying seed raising mix, pots, trays, and so on.

• liberally scatter a variety of mixed salad green seeds and herbs, if so desired, and water lightly,

Seedling set-backs gave us many headaches over the summer with the heatwaves, plagues of grasshoppers and plant-shrivelling dryness.

• scatter a small amount of mulch and then wait for a green carpet of lush, young seedlings to appear in a very short amount of time!

So, we have taken one step out of our seedling rearing process, that step being growing seedlings in small pots and trays, and going straight to the source: the garden bed itself, just as nature intended.

Most of our beds were planted out in this manner at the very beginning of autumn with a mixture of seeds including varieties of cos lettuce, mustard

With the right conditions,

greens, rocket, dill and coriander. As the heatwaves of summer relented to the cooler autumn days the seeds germinated en masse. This resulted in a highly productive, naturally chaotic and aesthetically pleasing bed that benefits us in many ways. With a massive amount of small seedlings growing, pests like slugs and grasshoppers can only do so much damage, so far not enough to even register with us. Even the rats have been struggling to do any noticeable damage! Growing our greens in this manner provides them with protection from those critters that would harm them, and they support each other physically through sheer numbers, so a short hard rain shower or

We have started cutting these minigreens at their base and using them in salads. It’s hard to make a dent in their numbers, even after eating several large salads. However, we won’t pull up everything. What is left should grow strong and large, so when we are finished with the mini greens our full sized plants will remain providing us with more salad!

Rohan tending the minigreens.

When we harvest the salad greens, roots are left in the soil to break down, feeding microorganisms and adding plant matter back to the soil

thus improving its quality continuously. Additionally, weeds don’t get a chance to grow in such beds, as the seedlings completely crowd them out. Through this method of producing soft herbs (such as dill and coriander) and salad greens, not only have we had rapid success and almost instant gratification for ourselves and our stomachs, this success has spilled over into winter, usually a time where one would be dipping into stores from the summer and autumn harvest. Our greens are still growing strong, although not quite as quickly as the days become colder and shorter, and we find ourselves able to eat fresh greens on an almost daily basis without decimating any one plant in a desperate bid for something fresh from the garden.

TO THE MOLESWORTH HOTEL

By Georgina Beach TUCKED at the foot of rolling green hills on the banks of the mighty Goulburn River, Molesworth is a “blink and you’ll miss it” kind of place. But if you’re on the road headed to or from the shores of Bonnie Doon, or the ski slopes of Mt Buller – or perhaps are simply seeking the right spot to rest your head as you make your way along the picturesque new Great Victorian Rail Trail – Molesworth might be worth slowing down for! Owners of the Molesworth Hotel, Joanne and David James.

One of the small huddle

of 1970s-style structures marking the township, houses the inimitable Molesworth Pub. Conveniently located right on the Goulburn Valley Highway, next door to the caravan park, it boasts a cosy bar, 100 seat bistro and four motel rooms, each with television and ensuite bathroom. Owners Joanne and David James are both new to this kind of business – and the district, in fact – but they say the warm welcome and everready assistance

Waverley guest house . . . ALEXANDRA “GREAT place, right on the main street. Fresh bread, fruit and brekky items provided, plus a warm welcome. Spa bath, kitchenette, LCD TV and comfortable furnishings,” – a recent blog message said about Waverley Guest House in Alexandra. This grand old Federation style house in Alexandra was built by the Edwards family in the early 1900’s as a guest house. Waverley started life as a single storey dwelling and with the need to expand a second story was added some years later. Ken and Marie Bristow bought Waverley in 1987 and have tastefully renovated it to reflect the style of the bygone era, and to provide boutique accommodation for travellers. Period features, such as polished floors and timber ceilings, have been retained. It has become a favouroite place to stay with rail trailers. A secure garage is provided for bikes and cars. Recently some guests rode their bikes to Mansfield, returned two days later before returning to Melbourne, knowing their belongings were safe at Waverley. Each unit has bedroom/s with queen sized beds and linen provided; a bathroom with a 2 person hot spa;

lounge with chesterfield couch, TV and dining table. Kitchen facilities include electric jug, toaster, bar fridge and preparation bench. Tea, coffee and milk are provided. This is the perfect setting to partake of your complementary gourmet hamper consisting of cereal, fruit juice, yoghurt, bread, croissants, muffins and other local produce as available. Tariffs range from $160 per night to $180 per night with

Marysville marathon . . .

Marysville marathon runs again RUNNERS and walkers will flock to RACV Marysville for the 5th annual Marysville Marathon Festival on 17th November. They will follow scenic forest trails and rivers, and be rewarded by waterfall views, as they cover distances of 4, 10, 21 (half marathon), 42 (marathon) or 50 kilometres (ultramarathon). The races start and finish at Gallipoli Park, in the town’s

centre, and include just a few kilometres of bitumen along Falls Road. “Entrants come back every year and see huge changes in the regeneration of the bush, and more and more homes being rebuilt since the fires,” says race patron Dr Lachlan Fraser. “They have a great day out and get a buzz from supporting our recovering community.” Mount Pleasant rboasts much-bette than-commonpub food, at very reasonable prices in a lovely openkitchen bistro

Wall walking . . .

EILDON

“WOW! What a view! What a fantastic walk!” These are some of the comments from the happy walkers on the first Rotary ‘Walk the Lake Eildon Wall’. Held on the Sunday morning of the Melbourne Cup weekend in November, it was a resounding success. Organised by the Rotary Club of Alexandra, over three hundred walkers took part – families, couples and individuals – some with their dogs, some with strollers. They really enjoyed the course. It is not a walkathon; rather, just a great walk through this picturesque area of Eildon – for fun and fitness for all the family. There are three choices of course. The first choice takes walkers on a loop from the start at the Lions pavilion next to the Eildon Pondage, over the lower pondage spillway and on around to the road bridge and back to the start, a flat

course, easy for strollers. The second course takes walkers on a loop along the upper pondage to the wall, up and across the actual wall on a ‘berm’, and down the other side back to the start. The views from up on the wall are spectacular! It is a unique opportunity. The public is not usually allowed to walk on the wall, but thanks to the generosity of Goulburn Murray Water and AGL it will be especially opened for the day. Many ‘early birds’ last year saw mobs of kangaroos grazing in the beautiful park-like area below the wall. The third option is to do both loops, a distance of around eight kilometres. “There must be another one next November! We’ll be back!” was a much repeated request last year. So here is your opportunity. Come join us this November! For more details see calendar listing in the back of this magazine.

GREAT VICTORIAN RAIL TRAIL

Rail trail a hit on the world scale

IT’s name may have changed amid some small controversy but there’s no doubt that the Tallarook to Mansfield rail trail is a real hit with bicycle enthusiasts. Take the views of Dr Richard Gregson and his wife, Dianne, from Sydney. They are true cycling enthusiasts and have tested many rail trails around the world. They‘ve ridden 300 kilometres along the Canal du Midi in France from Toulouse to Sete, and along the Danube River from Passau in Germany to Vienna, Austria – a trail that was once used by horses pulling barges, as well as the Sarlat-de-Caneda Rail Trail in Perigord, France. In New Zealand, they’ve pedalled the Tasman’s Great Taste Trail at Nelson, the Hawkes Bay Trail at Napier, and the Central Otago Rail Trail taking in Queenstown to Dunedin. Here in Victoria their cycling experience includes the Lilydale to Warburton trail through the Yarra Valley, and the Murray to Mountains trail from Wangarratta to Bright via Beechworth, as well as the Tallangatta Trail. The Gregsons discovered the previously-named Goulburn River continued page 40

continued from page 35 High Country Rail Trail when trawling the internet looking for their next cycling adventure. They began their Great Victorian Rail Trail ride with an overnight stay at the Mansfield Traveller’s Lodge and noted the “very obliging” staff. “Their excellent facilities included a well-equipped, large communal kitchen,” Dr Gregson said. “Then we were transported by the friendly folk at All Terrain Cycles to Tallarook and rode back to Yea, having left our car at Mansfield.” Hitting the pedals at Tallarook, they followed the Goulburn River with its rich river flats flanked by sharply rising hills, rocky outcrops and a jagged ridgeline. The Trawool Valley is so stunning it is listed on the Australian Heritage database for its cultural and scientific (geological) significance. It’s a landscape of State significance. Stopping at Yea, the couple enjoyed an overnight stay at The Peppercorn. This historic hotel was built in the 1860s and retains many beautiful original features while incorporating comforts and convenience of the modern era.

Locals know Galley 34 as much for its extraordinary art exhibitions but also for its home-grown, home-made tastetantalising food. The gallery has exhibited some of Australia’s best known and much loved artists, as well as works from highly skilled and talented artists from around the region working in diverse mediums. Emerging artists’ work are showcased with as much enthusiasm as established artists. Serving delicious free trade coffee, much of the seasonal produce comes from vegie patches and orchards around the district. It’s organic or free range and seriously good. Gallery 34 fare is also known locally for its very reasonable prices. “Fantastic breakfast,” Dr Gregson said. Cycling on through the historic Cheviot Tunnel, winding on to Alexandra the couple enjoyed the hospitality of Ken Bristow at the Waverley Guest House. They loved the well presented period décor in the selfcontained apartment which is very conveniently located.

Accommodation, food and company impressed: “lovely people, lovely food”, the Gregsons said.

Changing landscapes with stunning scenery and frequent glimpses of birds and wildlife made for a discovery tour of note, but the facilities along the trail were also an important plus for the couple. The Gregsons reported that toilets along the rail trail were among the best they’d come across.

The next morning the couple enjoyed breakfast at Gallery 34 in High Street, Yea.

The Gregsons are now adding to their rail trail experience with another cycling trip – this time in Italy.

MARYSVILLE

Marysville’s hidden treasure

VENTURE beyond the main street of Marysville and you will find many of her hidden treasures. One such treasure is revealed as you pass from Marysville’s wonderful adventure playground, KIN playspace, into the open space and tranquillity of Gallipoli Park. Nestled like a jewel in the centre of these well-kept public gardens is an ornamental lake, home to a host of waterbirds and even the occasional platypus. Surrounding the lake and casting myriad reflections on these tranquil waters is a monumental work of art, 1000 Hands, created by the community and recently dedicated to the community. Conceived as an affirmation of place, and for many a tangible pledge to support Marysville through her journey following the 2009 bushfires, each

individual tile is a work within the work. It is possible to spend hours absorbing and interpreting the messages and stories sealed in every frozen moment in time. Pause for a moment by the wisteria arbour, or pick a sunny spot on the amphitheatre, there are plenty of places to sit and take it all in. To find the 1000 hands, start from the Visitor Information Centre on Murchison

Street. Follow any pathway from here into the surrounding parkland. Once you have crossed Leary’s Creek, look for the giant flying fox or the glint of sunlight on still water. At this point, the hands will find you. 1000 Hands is a Triangle Arts Group (TAG) project. For more information about community arts in Marysville and the Triangle (including Buxton, Taggerty, Narbethong) call 0431 450 160.

Spend some time on the suspension bridge and see if you can spy a platypus (best time to do this is dawn and dusk). Take your camera and binoculars and sit awhile in one of the two bird hides and you will be rewarded. Listen carefully and you will be able to identify many different sounds, quite a few of which will be frogs busily calling out to their mates. If you manage to get to the wetlands in the early morning, you may observe swamp wallabies feeding quietly, or perhaps see a water rat scurrying around in one of the back lagoons looking for a yabby breakfast. Stop awhile at resting points along the boardwalks and look for a water rat having a grooming session or just sitting on an exposed log resting in the sunshine. See how many different

They make for great photographs. Don’t forget to look both up and down as you walk, as there are koalas and different species of possums residing

in the river red gums and their hollows, and echidnas in the undergrowth. Be patient and you will experience not only the peace and serenity of the wetlands, but observe unexpected sights and want to return to see it at different times of the day and in different seasons. When you have completed your leisurely stroll, why not visit the information shelter on the Police Paddock (opposite the Police Station) in Hood Street. There you can learn about the history of the Yea Wetlands, check out the plants in the waterwise garden, follow the fossil trail path, and if time, cook yourself a sausage or two on the free electric barbecue at the shelter. Wetlands are wonderful!

Birds . . .

OF THE MURRINDINDI SHIRE

Watching birds part 3 By Bob Tate

THE shire of Murrindindi has a wide scope for bird watching. For a full list of some easy to get to places to find birds in the shire please consult the flier ‘Birds and where to find them’, available from the visitor information centres. Each edition of this magazine I will reprint one of these places. Alexandra bushland Travel south in the main street (Grant Street) and go past McKenzie Reserve entrance for another 1 kilometre to a gravel road on the left which swings left again to the top of the hill, then turn right to the lookout. This walk is steep if you walk to the fence facing the large gate, but can be avoided by using the tracks on the west side of the lookout. The walk can be done in two parts and both are circuits which join up to be one if you follow the fence line. (Take care, if leaving the track – unguarded mining holes in this area.) Recently we found a goshawk nesting in this reserve which successfully raised one chick. This area bounds the transfer station and until recently was used as a rubbish tip and so has been knocked around more than McKenzie Reserve, but still there are often many birds and orchids in season. Walk grade 2 out of 10. The southern boobook or mopoke owl This is one of the more common owls of the district, although it is more often heard at night rather

than seen. It is recognised by the call uttered with monotonous regularity MO POKE in two distinct notes. In the early gold mining days there were many places called Mopoke gully or similar, and one of these places at Fryerstown near Castlemaine was where my own grandfather was born. The bird is widespread over Australia in a large range of habitats from rain forest to farmland, from the edge of deserts to parkland in the suburbs. It also lives on a large range of food, which consists of mammals such as possums, mice, insects, and other invertebrates. Owls have both eyes pointing forward in a large facial disc, the latter consisting of stiff feathers surrounding the eyes. The ears are asymmetrical, and all this gives the bird wonderful vision and hearing. Plumage is soft with a comb like ridge on the outer edge of the flight feathers allowing silent flight. Owls can fly through the bush at night completely silently and catch prey by grabbing with large widespread talons, one toe of which points sideways allowing a very wide and strong grasp. They also have a broad head and long neck, although this is concealed in feathers, and the legs are feathered almost their full length. Owls are probably more common in the district than realised because they are night time creatures.

The southern boobook or mopoke owl. Other species around here are the barn owl, the powerful owl and, one would like to think, the barking owl, although the latter is quite rare in Victoria. The only barking owls I have ever seen in the wild were on a recent holiday in Queensland where there were two birds in the caravan park in Townsville. The campers who were near their roost certainly could point them out to me, as their constant barking, like a small dog, all night was not on their list of enjoyable night time relaxation events.

Something Eildon fishing report By Gaz from Eildon Bait and Tackle WITH the rivers closed around Eildon, the lake, even though slow from time to time, is still the place to target. Lake Eildon is around the 70% mark and on a slow rise at the moment. Big River has been producing some nice browns around the two pound mark on spotted dog / spotted ghost and shadow Rapalas. Assorted Tassie devils are also a good way to go. Conditions have been a little all over the place recently, and when it comes to trolling, flat line and down rigging have both worked, but the 30 feet mark is as deep as you will need to be.

30% mark on average and with the recent stocking of 2,000 yearlings it has improved the angling prospects for the school holidays. There is also a planned stocking of brood stock in the near future, but we don’t have a date just yet. Riverside Drive, Bourke Street and near the bridge are the best spots at the moment. Fluro vibrax spinners, the old gold kroc, pink and purple Tassies are the lures that have had success. As far as the baits go, power bait, local dough and meal worms have all worked.

Swing those bells . . .

THE SPORT OF KETTLEBELLS

What are kettlebells? By Emily Friedel THE kettlebell is an iron or steel ball with a handle (much like a kettle without that spout, hence the name) that was first put to use, not as a fitness tool, but as a counterbalance on scales used for weighing grain in Russian markets many centuries ago. Russian peasants began to swing and toss the kettlebells around and soon enough the Russian military saw their potential for imparting formidable fitness on their soldiers. It was in the Russian military that the sport of kettlebell lifting began. Getting the kettlebell overhead for extended periods of time was found to be the perfect general physical preparation for soldiers, having great carryover to the varied tasks they had to perform on a daily basis. Studies also found that this sort of lifting helped develop the all-important ‘mental toughness’ military life necessitates. Competitions were organised where soldiers could test their physical and mental endurance against their peers and in 1948 the first official kettlebell sport competition took place in Moscow. So what exactly does kettlebell sport involve?

Basically, it requires the athlete to lift the kettlebell overhead with a time limit of ten minutes; the person with the most (legal) repetitions wins. There are two main events: biathlon (a ten minute jerk set followed later by a ten minute snatch set) and long cycle (a ten minute set of clean and jerk). The names of the individual lifts are the same as 48 – Murrindindi Guide – Spring 2013

those for Olympic weightlifting, and they share the same basic principles; but with the kettlebell they are modified for power endurance work rather than a single maximum effort lift. To compete in kettlebell sport an athlete requires all-round, balanced fitness and technical proficiency. Lifting a significant amount of weight overhead for ten minutes, (for example professional men will jerk a pair of 32kg kettlebells, that’s 64kg moved on every rep), demands strength, endurance, flexibility and cardio to all be balanced with one another – it is no use being strong if the other qualities aren’t developed. Strength alone may get you through a couple of minutes but to last the full ten you’ll need a lot more. For this reason it is a very healthy sport, where injuries in professional athletes are rare and athletes tend to have long careers (one of the legends of the sport is still competing in, and winning, open class events at the age of 52). Kettlebell sport is slowly permeating the West and recent Australian competitions have had upwards of 30 competitors! For more information on kettlebell sport over here you can check out The Kettlebell Garage on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ TheKettlebellGarage.

ENJOY MURRINDINDI’S WATERFALLS

Cora Lyn Falls

Phantom Falls

Murrindindi Shire is a great place to enjoy an escape to tumbling waterfalls and lush ferny gullies. There are many waterfalls to see and walking tracks of varying lengths to enjoy on the way to each waterfall. Falls of the Yarra Ranges National Park Nestled in lush bush in the Yarra Ranges National Park near Marysville are three waterfalls, each with its own unique character. If you’ve never visited the waterfalls of the Yarra Ranges area you’ve been missing out! Several waterfalls located

50 – Murrindindi Guide – Spring 2013

within a short drive of each other make a drive and walk tour of the waterfalls a great outing.

1. Phantom Falls A steep but rewarding 1.6km return walk takes you up from the Taggerty River Valley to the falls above. A

stunning clear view down to the river below the lookout allows you to see the path of the river from the falls. Melting snow and heavy rain tumbling over the falls in spring bring the valley to life.

2. Keppel Falls Keppel Falls and spectacular views of

the Taggerty River Valley can be enjoyed from a roadside lookout. If you feel like a walk, the 2km return walking track leads to a spectacular viewing platform jutting out over the river.

3. Cora Lyn Falls With two creeks joining at the top of the falls, Cora Lyn is a wonderful place to visit after heavy rain. While you’re visiting these falls you can walk the full 4km loop track and enjoy the many other sights along the way, including one of Australia’s tallest trees and the remains of the historic Cambarville township.

Steavensons Falls

Snobs Creek Falls

Rubicon State Forest 6. Snobs Creek Falls Snobs Creek Falls offer spectacular views as they drop more than 100 metres over a series of rocky outcrops. It is a short walk down steep steps from the carpark to an observation platform right next to the falls.

7. Rubicon Falls

Cumberland Falls 4. Cumberland Falls Hidden in a damp rainforest gully near Cora Lynn Falls are the Cumberland Falls. There are sweeping views of the Cumberland Valley from Sovereign View. There is a 4km loop, 2 hours walk from Cambarville picnic area carpark with short steep hills, formed track and some obstacles. This breathtaking walk passes rare, mature-aged mountain ash to beneath the Big Tree, a 400-year-old giant standing 85m above the forest floor.

Rubicon Falls is accessed by 4WD but the tracks are closed to vehicles during winter. It is, however, worth the 45 minute walk up hill to visit the falls in winter especially after decent rainfall. Follow the Rubicon River and walk up Rubicon River Road from the power station. The falls are only visible from the road. Keep a keen eye out for the bird life especially lyrebirds.

Murrindindi Scenic Reserve Situated at the northern end of the Toolangi State Forest the reserve provides excellent opportunities for camping, bushwalking, picnicking and fishing. Visit the Cascades and Wilhelmina Falls.

8. Wilhelmina Falls

5. Steavenson Falls Located just out of Marysville on Falls Road, Steavenson Falls drops some 84m into the Steavenson River Valley making it one of Victoria’s tallest waterfalls. The falls are floodlit from dusk until 11pm. Walk 300m to the base of the falls along a walkway. Toilets and an observation deck are provided. Another viewing platform is a 20 minute walk up to the top.

Wilhelmina Falls

Rubicon Falls

These spectacular falls drop 75 metres down a steep granite rock face and flow all year round. The hand railed viewing point at the base of the falls is a great place to take a photo or two. Continue up the stairs to the top of the falls, here a new viewing platform is located providing spectacular views of the surrounding mountain range. The track is fairly uneven and steep in places. This is a 6km return walk from Water Gauge camping site, and suitable for experienced bushwalkers. Murrindindi Guide – Spring 2013 – 51

Murrindindi Cascades 9. Murrindindi Cascades At the Cascades, the Murrindindi River drops steeply over granite boulders. From the carpark cross the road and follow the moderately steep, stepped track, approximately 0.3km, down to where two foot bridges cross the river at the base of the Cascades.

Masons Falls

Wombelano Falls

Kinglake National Park Kinglake National Park is a great place to visit if it’s waterfalls you love.

11. Masons Falls Masons Falls, the most-visited place in the park, has been re-opened after a huge amount of work completed in the years following Black Saturday. The picturesque cascading falls and picnic area are now back on the map, and people are flocking to enjoy them once again. The 45 metre falls are close to the top of the Great Dividing Range and are particularly spectacular after heavy rain. The large shady picnic area has barbecue facilities, shelters and toilets and the falls are only a short gentle walk away.

12. Wombelano Falls

Strath Creek Falls Mt Disappointment State Forest 10. Strath Creek Falls Strath Creek Falls is an impressive 50 metre waterfall situated in the Mt Disappointment State Forest. It is accessed from Murchison Road (at the top of Murchison Gap). The last 1 kilometre drive to the carpark is steep and not suitable for caravans, buses or campervans. The walkway from the carpark to the viewing platform is a moderate incline. 52 – Murrindindi Guide – Spring 2013

There is a remote feel to the 15 minute walk in to Wombelano Falls along the narrow, winding bush track. Lyrebirds abound deep in the gully, while the greater gliders wait for dusk before they emerge from their homes in old-growth eucalypts. This is a particularly lovely place to visit in late winter when water flows are strong and the blackwoods are flowering. Fenced in . . . RELUCTANT or unable to choose healthy, sustainable timber due to high prices and scarcity?

Would using sustainable/ recycled timber cripple your budget? Want something healthier and better looking than treated pine? Want your job to be the best it can be? With Golden Cypress™ you won’t feel guilty using chemically impregnated products, half-rotten recycled stuff or species sourced from shrinking or fragile ecosystems. This Granton based business is owned by local Rod Sheppard who says “Golden Cypress is sustainable, naturally durable, dimensionally stable and surprisingly affordable.” Sourced from old, sick,

redundant or dangerous trees that landowners don’t want anymore, this waste product is rescued, and locally converted into something wonderful and useful – both beautiful and stable. Post and rail fence-kits, sleepers, bollards, garden beds, structural F7 grade, large section posts and beams, boardwalks, furniture, benchtops, boat-building: indoor or outdoor Golden Cypress is the first choice for switched-on architects, designers, government departments, contractors and homeowners across the eastern states. Cut from big stuff – these old, slow growing trees, with tight growth rings make for remarkably stable timber.

As Australia’s largest supply network, Golden Cypress™ Timber Sales gives you the most cost-effective outcome by matching your specific application to one or more of their clearly defined grades.

Sourced from Australian farms Golden Cypress is ethical, affordable and durable. For more information refer to advertisment below or phone Rod on 0400 540 589.

Show time . . .

ALEXANDRA & YEA

Alexandra THE Alexandra Spring Show will see its 130th anniversary in November 2013 and a big celebration is planned. One major change will be extending this year’s show to include the Sunday – a family oriented day with a new dairy goat exhibition, a gymkhana for younger riders, adult riding club classes and a second day of working dog trials. Of course a celebration must include a party of sorts – a community bushdance is planned for the Saturday evening, fronted by the five-piece band ‘Couchgrass’ from Benalla. There will be no excuse for young and old not getting up and having a good time. Food and beverages will be offered on the night by other community groups keeping all dance proceeds locally. Prizes for best dressed and most energetic dancer will be up for grabs so lets see lots of locals and visitors on the night. On Saturday there will be an interactive animal nursery and for those with pets, come and make the pet parade a great

success. As always there will be games and rides in sideshow alley to test your skill and stomach. You can’t go past the ladies’ pavilion at any agricultural show – entries have been steadily growing over the years. There is a huge range of open and children’s age group classes so the ladies’ pavilion competition isn’t just for mums and nans. It is a great opportunity to get your kids involved in their local community. Demonstrations from the ‘shearing guns’ and Alexandra Dog Obedience Club will feature again this year. Mark Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th of November in your diaries and keep an eye out for advertisements and the show schedule in the lead up to the show. For more information don’t forget to check out www.alexandrashow.com.

Yea THE 99th annual show of the Yea Agricultural, Pastoral and Horticultural Association will be held on Saturday 23rd November.

The fabulous attractions include a new event with the Victorian Rabbit Association participating in the show. This special section is expected to have up to 100 entries. With production of quality beef being one of the strongest agricultural industries in the district, the Yea Show mirrors local success, with its renowned line-up of magnificent stud and commercial cattle. The feature cattle class this year is Herefords. Dog events include sheep handling and yard dog demonstrations and the very popular dog high jump. Children are well catered for with a puppet show, animal nursery, face painting, rides, showbags and the children’s pet show at 10am.

There are children’s sections in all parts of the show and children are encouraged to participate and enter in whatever area they’re interested. Help them to make their entry and watch the excitement when they win a prize. Marvel at the exquisite arts and crafts and the talents and expertise of local artisans; stunning photography, beautiful floral displays lovingly arranged by locals from the bounty of their gardens; and the tempting treats in the cookery section. Don’t forget to check out the wonderful children’s work in the CWA school’s display. Horse events, alpaca displays, fleeces, spinning and weaving demonstrations, trade displays, delicious foods and much more will fill your day.

Taggerty vet . . .

By Georgina Beach

IT was past midnight, in the midst of a Taggerty Winter. My beloved dobermanns had been missing for over seven hours, and I was quietly losing my mind, so I made a call for help. Standing in darkness, on a frost-bitten hillside, I caught sight of a torch flickering through the scrub below. I called out, and the voice which answered belonged to veterinarian Rebecca Parth. Sometimes, vets are given a bad rap, accused of being big on bills and short on time. Veterinary medicine is a challenging line of work: whilst doctors receive ten years’ tuition on a single species; vets get only six, and thereafter, are

expected to diagnose and cure every ailment of anything which lives and breathes but isn’t human, and thus cannot tell them where it hurts. This wasn’t the first evening the Taggerty vet had volunteered her time for the sake of an animal – or indeed, a person – in peril, and I’m sure it won’t be the last. Maybe it’s because she too has a farm filled with incorrigible critters, and knows only too well how it feels when you’re having “one of those days”, and how hard it is to balance the budget when the four-leggeds get fed first. Throughout her childhood, Rebecca spent every weekend and school holiday on her parents’ cattle property at Taggerty, dividing her time between riding horses and helping tend to every animal the farm had to offer. By the time she finished school, her dreams were crystal clear. One: establish a Taggerty Veterinary Clinic, and two: breed and train her own

Just over a decade later, the first of the those dreams is a daily reality. After six years at Melbourne University, and four earning her stripes at Gisborne and Kilmore veterinary practices, in 2008 Rebecca came “home” for good.

Already, there have been a few real showstoppers... but the current rising star is a mild-mannered young chestnut by the name of Ginger. Not quite five years old and already testing at Level 3 dressage, her future is looking very bright indeed!

Basing herself on a picturesque farmlet on the Thornton Road, she worked out of the back of her trusty Landcruiser for eighteen months whilst her new clinic was being built.

So whilst the life of a young female vet on the road at all hours can be far from a picnic, the view from the Taggerty Veterinary Clinic windows is a sunny one – most days!

During this time, the locals came to know her as one person they could rely on. Now, with the shiny new clinic well and truly worn in, and countless cases coming through the doors each week, there are many local farmers and pet owners alike who’d simply be lost without her. And in her “spare” time? Well, she’s working on her second dream; producing that champion. Horses are her passion in life, and she has been breeding studbook Warmbloods for seven years now.

AKADEMOS RALLY 20TH OCTOBER

The team of Will Orders and Lauren Gray please the spectators on their way to winning the Akademos Rally. Photo courtesy John Doutch. Rally Championship or the Australian Rally Championship.

In 2002 the club revived the AKADEMOS in the Blue Range forest area.

The event quickly grew in stature and became a “must win” event on the Victorian Rally calendar in the 1960s.

Like most events from that era, crews would start the event around sunset, and only the leading cars would reach the finish before the sun had risen again.

During the 1970s and 1980s, for many the halcyon days of rallying in Australia, the event had its base in East Gippsland and was a round of either the Victorian

That long, demanding form of rallying began to become less appealing to competitors and organisers alike and the event went into a recess after the 1993 running.

Here a combination of excellent forest roads and a welcoming local community have enabled the event to grow to the point where it once again represents the “must do” event on the Victorian Rally calendar.

THE AKADEMOS Rally came on the scene in 1961, when the Melbourne University Car Club organised its first Open Rally in Victoria.

Anyone who has accidently found themselves seeking accommodation in and around Alexandra on the

weekend of the event can attest to the popularity of the event, and the financial benefit it brings to the area. Staged in May for 5 years, using an afternoon/evening format, the event was moved to October in 2007 becoming a Sunday event held entirely during the daylight hours. One reason for the move to Sunday was to better fit in with local logging operations, which don’t

Once a year the roads through the forest, normally the home of rumbling log trucks, become the domain of specialised, high speed rally cars. During the event, two separate radio networks are set up to manage the event. Two specialised medical vehicles (First Intervention Vehicles) are stationed strategically through the forest, and in recent times

satellite tracking of vehicles is starting evolving. Along with deployment of officials on the ground, this enables the competition cars and the general public to be kept safely separated during the event, with the Department of Environment and Primary Industry granting permission for the event to have exclusive use of the roads for the one day of the year when AKADEMOS comes to the Shire of Murrindindi.
