Goulburn Fishing Festival
The Goulburn Fishing Festival will be back on this September, bringing 2,000 trophy sized trout and plenty of keen fishers with it. The festival, on Saturday 3 September, coincides with the opening of trout season in streams and rivers, and the Goulburn River is set to welcome thousands of excited freshwater fishers for the weekend.
Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) CEO Travis Dowling said 10 stocking sites along the Goulburn River, between Eildon and Molesworth, will share in 1,500 stonker trout and the Eildon Pondage is set to receive 500. “The Goulburn Fishing Festival and the release of stonker rainbow trout have become part of Victoria’s annual trout opening celebrations and many fishers have this weekend and this event firmly marked on their calendars,” Mr Dowling says. “The festival is a wonderful way to celebrate one of Victoria’s brilliant inland fisheries and also a great way to really get the next generation of fishers hooked with plenty of fun family activities.”

The stocking of stonker rainbow trout is all part of the State Government’s $35 million Go Fishing Victoria plan to get more people fishing, more often. Stonker trout were part of the recordbreaking effort last season in which 10 million fish were released right across Victoria, delivering on a key election commitment and setting a new Australian record for fish stocking too. The free Goulburn Fishing Festival, based at the Eildon Community Centre, promotes fishing in the region and there will be fun things to do for the whole family from 9am until 3pm. Free activities will include children’s fishing clinics with experts, fly-fishing lessons, face painting, prizes and raffles, a chance to speak to Fisheries officers, and tours of the Victorian Fisheries Authority’s Snobs Creek hatchery nearby, which grows trout and native fish for the statewide stocking program. There will also be trout stockings into the Eildon Pondage on the day that youngsters can help with. Just bring the gum boots! For more information, including a map of the 10 stocking sites, visit www.vfa. vic.gov.au/goulburnfishfest Victorian rivers and streams officially open to trout fishing on Saturday 3 September 2022. All lakes, including Lake Eildon and the Eildon Pondage, are open to trout fishing year-round.
