BARBARA HAUSER, KINGLAKE WEST By Tammy Lovett FROM remote regions of Africa and Asia, to strip clubs and homeless communities in America, artist Barbara Hauser has spent decades immersed in society’s subcultures for inspiration for her art. Famed for her portraits, the German-born painter now finds herself nestled in the hills of Kinglake West, exploring Australia’s unique characters to capture on canvas. Barbara came to Australia three years ago, where she met her partner Kinglake West resident John Anchen. A self-confessed rebel, Barbara says her paintings and alternative style reflect her personality. “It’s abstract realism; totally opposite.” “People look at my paintings and everyone puts other feelings in it and see different things, and that’s the abstract part. “It’s new realism. I started with it about 30 years ago – it was very unfashionable at the time. “It’s my style; it’s unique,” she said. Barbara’s technique strays from convention. “I don’t work with an easel. I have to paint on the floor because the paints I use are pretty wet,” she said.

her work an added level of complexity.

philosophy she has adopted; to create honest work that tells the stories of her characters.

Ethnic minorities, the gay community, prostitutes, strippers and the homeless feature heavily throughout Barbara’s work.

“Art is an honest thing.”

“They have stories.”

“It’s not important to give the style a name. It’s important what the people feel when they see it.

“I try to put their stories to the faces,” she said.

“You shouldn’t think, you should just do it,” she said.

Living in these communities has shaped Barbara as much as it has shaped her artwork.

Barbara has been painting since the age of five. “I was always in love with paint and colours.

“I soak up like a sponge; the stories, the smells.” With vivid colours and movement in her work it’s easy to see how Barbara’s subjects match her bold style. Barbara is currently working on her upcoming exhibition, Fame and Glitter, set to go on show in March at the Daylesford Chill Out Queer Country Pride Festival. The upcoming show will feature portraits of music legends, showgirls, works from the life drawing classes she attends in Melbourne and plenty of other subjects to captivate her audience. With a fascination for people, Barbara also plans to capture the essence of Australia’s Aboriginal culture in future exhibitions. She is planning to visit remote parts of Australia to live among these communities to gain an understanding of the people there. Barbara believes much of her success stems from the

“I still am.” But is hasn’t been an easy journey. Initially against her parents’ wishes, Barbara began a career in the arts. As a compromise with her family she studied graphic design, but soon realised she needed more freedom to express herself.

‘Walk the Talk’, a portrait of George the brickie who helped John build his house.

Barbara says there were times when her parents warnings came back to haunt her, when she had no income and found herself starving. But this only made her more determined to succeed and after seeing her work, Barbara’s parents now support their daughter’s decisions. “I had to fight pretty hard for my heart,” she said. “I don’t regret anything. I’m doing what I want to do.” To view some of Barbara’s work, or for a list of galleries where her work is currently on display, visit www.barbara-hauser.de.

robust and almost didn’t enter. Luckily, Marcus Fletcher of Binalong Rural, with whom they are in partnership, insisted they have a go. The fact that Chrissi and Doug use high quality, fresh, local ingredients and don’t use imported flavouring essences obviously worked in their favour, and certainly made an oil that will impress even the fussiest extra virgin olive oil connoisseur. The infused oils are just the beginning of Two Pickled’s extensive range of goodies. They make everything from chutneys (including the kick arse tomato chutney extra hot – not for the faint of heart, a “real bum burner” according to Chrissi) to dukkahs to jellies and syrup. Among their most popular tastebud ticklers are the smoked pumpkin chutney and garlic dukkah. Their muscat infused fig salami (macerated figs in muscat, freshly grated ginger and pistachios) also comes highly recommended and makes an incredible addition to cheese platters. Chrissi and Doug use both tried and true recipes, family heirlooms passed down from Chrissi’s mother and grandmother, and concoct their own unique blends through experimenting. They tinker with combinations of locally sourced ingredients and even grow their own citrus fruits, pumpkins, figs and rosemary. To get a recipe just right they will often work on it for months, and witnessing people’s reactions when tasting the fruits of their labour for the first time is one of the greatest rewards for Chrissi and Doug. Two Pickled are also long-time supporters of Marysville’s World’s Longest Lunch - part of the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival - hosted by Maryton Park (also featured in this issue). Celebrity chefs such as Stephanie Alexander and Poh of ‘Poh’s Kitchen’ have personally signed memorabilia acknowledging Two Pickled’s contributions to this event. This signed memorabilia adorns the walls of their tasting room, along with various awards and newspaper clippings singing the praises of their delectable edibles.

With Christmas rapidly approaching, why not get in touch with the Two Pickled team and make an appointment for a farmgate visit to find the perfect gift for a loved one whose stomach is the way to their heart? Be warned, though, you will be hard pressed to walk away without a few delicious little Chrissy presents for yourself once you’ve started tasting what’s on offer.

AN EVENT OF THE YEA ARTS CARNIVALE Murrindindi Guide – Summer 2013 / 2014 – 11

Say g’day to Yea . . .

2014 ARTS CARNIVALE

A masquerade enjoying the opening of the first Yea Arts Carnivale last year. Below: Laura Wallace , Marian Rennie and Lauren Kelly at the ‘art meets wine’ exhibition at Sedona Estate. MAKE sure that you find time to say g’day to Yea this January.

Community Bank Twilight Market commencing at 4pm.

In late January, as the holiday season draws to a close, the Yea area comes alive with the colour and vibrancy of the Yea Arts Carnivale from 19th to 27th.

This market will offer a vibrant mix of arts, crafts, local products and produce, community-based stalls, interesting items, clothing and good food, all right in the main street of Yea.

The small community of Yea gets together in true Aussie style to celebrate the arts with a wonderful array of events.

The opening will also feature a Freeza run pool party for juniors from 5pm to 7pm and for high school students from 7.30pm to 10.30pm.

Yea is often remembered as a great place to stop for coffee and a snack but in January it becomes a fantastic destination providing a range of things to entertain both the young and the young at heart.

Also keep your eye out for the colourful art bombing (yarn bombing) around the town.

The Yea Arts Carnivale is not a single event or even a single day, it is a variety of functions that are independently organized within the framework of the overall festival. The Carnivale was launched in January 2013 and was embraced by both locals and visitors alike. It includes many forms of art such as painting, sculpture, photography, poetry, music and drama. This year’s event will be officially opened on Sunday 19th January with the Yea 12 – Murrindindi Guide – Summer 2013 / 2014

During the week, and into the following weekend, there will be a range of great events. These include art workshops at the Railway Station and Meg Heres conducting a workshop at her exhibition at Marmalades in Yea. Check out the wedding dresses your grandmother may have worn at Beaufort Manor which is the venue for a vintage wedding dress museum, organised by the Historic Society. The Rotary Art Show opening will be held on the evening of Friday 24th January and provides a diverse range of artwork to peruse and purchase.

Enjoy the colours and fun of the art works, sit back, relax and listen to some great music or perhaps wander through the photographic exhibition in the railway shed. Bring the kids to explore the local wetlands which is home to an abundance of wonderful Australian wildlife. They can also join in the fun activities such as face painting, guided tours and an Aboriginal artist’s work. Tempt your taste buds with a wonderful array of special culinary events from beautiful a la carte menus to tasty snacks, not to mention the great coffee, and maybe breakfast at the Australia Day ceremony at 8.30am in the Plantation. You might even be tempted

to taste the creativity of the talented local vignerons and take home some samples. Some of the events can be found in the heart of the town, whilst others are located around the district, with maps available. Look for events in Yea and also the Highlands, Flowerdale and Strath Creek. A different event will occur every day, including performance arts, visual arts and food events. These are being organised by Jo Miller and team and are to be held at Gallery 34 and Manafest Cafe. The list of things to do and enjoy continues to grow as we go to press so make sure you visit the website for updates: www. yeaartscarnivale.com.au.

TAGGERTY

Little River Wines at Taggerty is nestled under the majestic Mt Cathedral. THE Little River Wines of Taggerty journey has been, at times, like taking a ride on the Big Dipper – breathtaking highs followed by jaw-dropping plunges into a low, but throughout, the zeal to produce high quality, enjoyable wines has never waned, according to Christine Challen. Philip and Christine Challen have been growing grapes along the Little River at Taggerty for almost 30 years and produced their first vintage of chardonnay in 2001, with help from friends and close neighbours, Oscar Rosa and Nick Arena, at Mt Cathedral Winery. This wine immediately won a Bronze Medal at the Victorian Wines Show. “This was our first major high and encouraged us in what

we’d always described as our folly. We decided we’d better be more serious in our endeavours and the hobby/ folly became a passion/ obsession; now our business is a full-time dedication,” said Christine. The Challens believe in permaculture and organic farming practices. They also contract fruit from other like-minded growers in order to produce a continuous portfolio of at least 5 wines. Their current range includes a Sparkling Shiraz, Taggerty Sparkling Brut, two Chardonnays, Syrah, Cellarhands Shiraz/Cabernet and Forgotten Hero (Petit Verdot).

mildew threats from wet summers. The highs have been the opportunity to develop different styles of wine, success in marketing their sparkling wine brand with awards and medals along the way.

As far as the lows go, these have included crippling frosts, smoke taint, fire damage and more recently

“But the biggest encouragement and high for us is the people we’ve met. Good food and wine

promotes cheer and positive social acquaintance. We’ve been fortunate to have made many lasting friendships as a result,” said Christine. Little River Wines are available locally from most hotels, restaurants and retail outlets. Visitors are welcome to the cellar door by appointment only, phone 03 5774 7644.

Maryton Park . . .

BEER & PLATTER GARDEN, MARYSVILLE

A taste of old Marysville By Emily Friedel THE Maryton Park beer and platter garden is nestled in a charming cottage garden on the side of a picturesque hill, just outside of Marysville township. A tranquil lake,

16 – Murrindindi Guide – Summer 2013 / 2014

complete with friendly resident ducks and just a few steps away from both indoor and outdoor eating areas, is the garnish on this idyllic little eatery. This year, the beer and

platter garden will open from November 9 until the Queen’s Birthday Weekend 2014, and Maryton Park owners Tony and Penni Thompson will be serving up locally sourced produce in a

setting that gives you a true taste of ‘old’ Marysville. As the name suggests, platters are on the menu. Made up of cheeses, cured meats, char-grilled vegies, olives and home-made

smoked trout pate, they are perfect for sharing with friends on a sunny day. There are also fresh fish and seafood meals available. To wash down these delectable goodies you can choose from a variety of locally brewed beers. Or perhaps the wines from the Yarra Valley would be more to your liking? Tony and Penni will also be adding wines from Beechworth and Bright to the drinks menu this year to give lovers of fine wine an even greater selection. Don’t worry, there is something for the sweet tooth too: Maryton Park’s own berries (grown on site) star in a brandy cup dessert with some cream thrown in for good measure. Simply mouthwatering!

Maryton Park is a superb venue for small wedding receptions, with stunning vistas and that tucked-away feeling that allows you to kick back and genuinely enjoy time with loved ones. Tony and Penni can provide all of those personal touches that make a wedding reception truly special, and memorable. There is also the option of staying at Maryton Park (a great honeymoon option straight after the wedding reception, or even if you’d just like to enjoy the fine selection of beers and wines without having to drive afterwards). The six single-bedroom country cottages, with queen beds and en suite bathrooms, have glorious views of the garden, lake and mountains. You can also

use ‘Jonesy’s Kitchen’, a place close to the owners’ hearts as it was built by a friend after the fires in 2009. Jonesy’s Kitchen is self-contained and has a barbecue area on the side – perfect for groups. The three luxury selfcontained cottages, brimming with country charm, have everything you need for a relaxing

getaway. You can sit on the deck, looking out across the impeccable Marysville countryside with a glass of fine wine, after melting away any residual stress in the spa. So, over the warmer months when a cold brew beckons, why not wander down to Maryton Park with a mate or two for refreshments and a healthy dose of relaxation.

Beer & Platter GARDEN Now open for another glorious spring/summer season • Saturday 12pm-9pm • Sunday 12pm-4pm Have you visited the Beer Garden yet? It’s a must visit for the warmer months. It’s a great place to relax, seating outside by the lake, in the rose garden or air-conditioned seating inside. Great old English favourites; ploughmans lunch, homemade fish and chips and a variety of

platters to choose from, or you can just relax with a coffee and cake or a Devonshire tea. We stock local wines by the glass, ciders and beers. Bar open all day. Experience the atmosphere, food and ambience. Nothing else compares to what we have to offer.

“We also offer gift vouchers, laybys and will order stock in for our customers as just a little extra service”, Leanne said.

Caroline has gained valuable experience in retail working with her mother and managing busy clothing boutiques in Melbourne Central. She has also tapped into the social media trends, adding this exciting element to Lit & Beyond for future growth. 18 – Murrindindi Guide – Summer 2013 / 2014

With new stock arriving weekly, it has always been a top priority to offer customers the latest trends in fashion and gift ideas.

Water, water everywhere . . .

LAKE Eildon is Victoria’s largest man-made water catchment and has over 500 kilometres of shoreline. Lake Eildon National Park offers something for everyone! Enjoy bushwalking, bird watching, picnicking, camping, cycling, boating, fishing and spectacular scenic drives. The park is known for its abundance of wildlife. Kangaroos come to the shoreline at dusk to drink and wombats, echidnas and koalas are often seen. During spring birdlife, orchids and wildflowers are prolific. Walking Walking is one of the best ways to explore the park. Two short circuit walks start from the Fraser Camping Areas. Explore some of the more remote and picturesque areas of the park with a longer walk. Take in spectacular views across the lake and surrounding mountains. The longer walks

are of moderate to steep grade, better suited to the cooler months. Wear appropriate footwear and let someone know where you are going and what time you expect to return. Picnicking Have a picnic with family and friends at Forsyth Flat or Herb Fitzroy Day Visitor Areas on the lake shore – both have free gas barbecues, shelters and picnic tables to cater for all weather conditions. Bike riding Coller Bay walking and bike riding track links the three camping areas in the Fraser block. Cycling is permitted on roads throughout the remainder of the park. Cycling is not permitted on tracks signed ‘Walkers Only’. Camping Fraser Camping Area has three designated camping

areas, all with unpowered sites. Lakeside, Candlebark and Devil Cove sites are suitable for small to medium sized tents, campervans and caravans. Facilities include toilets, hot showers, gas barbecues, shelters, picnic areas and boat launching facilities. Jerusalem Creek Camping Area, located seven kilometres east of Eildon, has fireplaces and pit toilets and allows dogs under control in the camping areas only. Camping fees apply and all campsites must be prebooked and paid online at www.parks.vic.gov.au or by calling Parks Victoria on 13 1963. No camping is permitted in the Day Visitor Areas at Fraser or Jerusalem Creek. Free boat based camping is allowed at Mountaineer Inlet, Coopers Point and Taylors Creek. Bookings are not required. No fires are permitted at Coopers Point.

Paddle power . . .

By Geoff Strong “YOU bought sea kayaks? For Lake Eildon, isn’t that overkill?” The interrogator obviously did not know what the lake’s waters are capable of dishing up when the wind blows and is concentrated by those steep sided hills that give the waterway’s shoreline its charm. About 15 years so ago, in a small open canoe I accompanied a fitness fanatic friend who swam two kilometres from Goughs Bay to the southern shore. Doris our chubby blue heeler came too. He made the swim without drama, but the drama hit about the second he got in the boat to return. Dark storm clouds down the western end of the reach toward Eildon town, sent their advance guard- winds approaching 80 kilometres an hour. The water, glassy on the way over became surf for the return. Fortunately it was blowing the direction we headed and this tiny boat with two men and a dog, surfed the waves back

to town. I learned not to underestimate the lake. We’ve had a house overlooking it since 1988 and watercraft: including sailing dinghy, powerboat, small plastic beginner’s kayak, a couple of old fibreglass kayaks plus the canoe. None of these give as much fun and sense of achievement as sea kayaks. About five years ago we bought two identical ones to use on Port Phillip Bay. They are good in foul weather. Two years ago this type was paddled across Bass Strait. Longer kayaks are generally faster and these are 5.3 metres, which rewards good speed for effort; important if you want to cover distance. Let’s face it, boasting an area six times that of Sydney Harbour, you need to be able to cover distance if you want to explore Lake Eildon’s attractions. Sea kayaks also have waterproof storage hatches front and rear, allowing camping trips. Strapped to our car roof we brought them to the lake and they proved a success. I’ve paddled from Gough’s

ON LAKE EILDON

Bay to Jerusalem Creek, Big River, the Howqua and made the 20 km to Jamieson’s outskirts in a little more than two hours. That’s 10 kph average and I can go faster in a burst, which annoys the hell out of jetskis and speedboats keeping to the 8 kph limit inside the yellow markers. I’ve even overtaken a houseboat. Leaving a crease on glassy water or bashing through high chop, on your own or with friends is a powerful feeling, especially sensing it is done by your muscle. We are both in our 60s and not especially fit, but it pays to begin kayaking with some instruction and paddle mild conditions first. Most kayaks used on the lake are those little sit on tops; fun to just get out on the water, but slow. Few venture far from the shore or their owner’s houseboat. Another alternative are fishing kayaks. Our neighbour has one, pedal powered, sporting rod holders and even an electronic fish finder. He goes a considerable distance and we’ve joined him a couple of times

About a year ago, sick of shipping up the Melbourne kayaks, I found a couple of cheap second hand sea kayaks on Gumtree classifieds, to keep here permanently. They were different makes, both 5 metres long, needed considerable repairs, but performed well. Also there are lots of rivers and creeks feeding into the lake offering opportunities, especially in spring, for whitewater kayaking, using appropriate short kayaks. One further possibility dawned after being pulled over by the Mansfield police for a breath test. The officer spotted the kayaks on our car roof and admitted being an enthusiast. In fact he was about to take delivery of new custom built TK1 kayak the next day. These are an Olympic racing class about four metres long and fast, but probably a handful in rough water. We said we would look out for each other on the lake, but I am yet to spot him. Subconsciously I might expect a kayak with a blue flashing light. Murrindindi Guide – Summer 2013 / 2014 – 31

Eildon fishing report By Gaz from Eildon Bait and Tackle IN THE past few months Eildon has hosted the Goulburn Fishing Festival and the Big Fish Competition and both proved to be most successful. The Goulburn Fishing Festival saw over 700 hundred people through on the Friday and Saturday. While the giveaways and prizes were a favourite on the Friday night, the big winner was the addition of a fireworks display at 9pm on the Eildon Pondage.

Fun was had by all, including little Mitchell, at the inaugural Big Fish Competition in Eildon.

Saturday we had tours of the Snobs Creek Fish Hatchery, cooking demonstrations, tackle tactics, as well as great bargains on the latest tackle.

The Big Fish Competition held on the Eildon Pondage had 230 entrants, with many more enjoying the music on Saturday night and the wide range of food and wine available on Sunday. Fifty six trout were caught over the weekend with the largest being 56cm caught by Dave Edmonds. Over 30 children left with smiles on their dials after receiving rod and reel combos for participating in the event. All in all a very successful couple of weekends and with a bit of tweaking it will be great to see both events go from strength to strength. Now to the fishing: the rivers are starting to fire up again after the closed season. Big River has been producing good numbers of small rainbow and brown trout

mainly taken on scrubbies and bladed vibrax and celta type lures. A few good sized trout between 1lb and 3lb have also been caught. Burnt Bridge camping ground saw a 55cm yellow belly, several red fin and a few trout taken over one weekend. The Goulburn River has been cranked up to 3,500 megalitres and fishing well. Powerbait is working between Eildon and Thornton and further down towards Alexandra scrubbies, rapalas and bladed lures are worth a shot. A 5lb brown trout has been caught on a scrubby near Gilmore’s Bridge. The Rubicon has been a little tough lately with only the odd report of small rainbows being caught.

The Eildon Pondage has been well stocked for recent events and all the usual baits and lures are doing the job. The local dough is the best of the artificial baits and an assortment of the power baits are working as well. Gold krocs, pink, purple and frog pattern tassie devils have also taken trout. Good numbers of 3-5lb rainbow and brown trout have been reported. Remember that the bag limit for trout in the pondage is 5, but only 2 over 35cm are allowed per person.

oargie lures in 10-15ft of water. Up to 5lb brown trout were taking spotted dog rapalas in the Big River arm. The grassy flats that have been recently covered are doing well with both scrubbies and ordinary garden worms. In the coming months yabbies will be worth a shot chasing yellow belly and cod. Once again remember cod season reopens on 1st December and the size you are allowed to keep is between 60 and 100cm.

Lake Eildon has reached 95 per cent and the best areas have been the freshly covered ground near Fraser camping ground, Jerusalem Creek and over towards Bonnie Doon.

I haven’t had too many reports on the reddies, mainly small ones in the main arm on bobbers and worms, but once again warmer weather will fire these guys up in the near future.

Yellow belly 5-10lb, were being caught trolling purple

Simon Davis our ‘three hatted’ executive chef, has recently joined Flowerdale Estate from the heady gourmet world of award winning restaurants in Sydney; including Bennelong at Sydney Opera House, Claudes and Quay. BY NICI THOMPSON

CHALLENGES surround us all these days. Certain designers embrace challenge more than others and that certainly applies to event designers who cope with all sorts of obstacles before producing the finished, shining product. Nici Thompson, based in Alexandra, loves a challenge and likes to bring her own touch to all her floral arrangements. For those brides who believe they can do everything themselves, including the flowers are best to think again. Professionals can bring a cachet, a style, a uniqueness that sets them apart. A huge budget is not a necessity, but discipline and knowledge are. Flowers by Nici Thompson certainly know how to create the WOW factor! For the coming season brides are looking for something

different, not only in their gowns but in their flowers. What’s on trend for the year ahead? Vintage chic is still to the forefront and it seems set to continue. Colour in a bouquet is becoming more popular, with some startling choices. Art Deco is echoed in the actual shape of bouquets, together with stunning hair pieces and combs.

Scott Hill and Carly Ware were married on Saturday 26th October at Keppel Waters on the Buxton-Marysville Road with a reception following at the Narbethong Hall and scrumptious food by Michael Jaeger from Marysville. Nici Thompson supplied the beautiful flowers. Photos courtesy Kapture Photography.

Nici says the most noticeable and exciting trend is the move towards floral headdresses, bags and jewellery. Another interesting development in design terms is a move towards architectural bouquets some of which even reflect the venue of the ceremony. Blissfully wedded . . . A PERFECT day in Alexandra, with blue skies and warm temperatures, was the setting for the relaxed, casual wedding of Kevin Evans and Julie McLeod. Kevin is a racehorse trainer and Julie is the owner of Alexandra Signs. The charming ceremony was performed by marriage celebrant Glynne CousinsPietzsch in the rustic setting of the Alexandra Timber Tramway on the station platform. The bridal party, dressed in purple and silver, arrived at the platform on the Krauss 0-4-0 steam locomotive. After the ceremony the guests, especially the children, enjoyed a ride on the train with special thanks to Gerry and Jane Laws. Miller’s Mensland sourced the shirts for the men in the bridal party and the bride’s purple dress was stunningly complemented with her bridal bouquet, created by Nici Thompson of Alexandra. Guests had a wow of a time at the reception held at the Alexandra Race Club where the purple and silver theme continued in the tulle and love hearts from Brooke Savage and helium balloons. A fabulous mix of music and mood lighting provided by Killa Entertainment kept the

Blissfully wedded . . . By Karen Williamson

THERE was nowhere more beautiful to have our wedding than at our farm ‘Bonnie Brae’ in Molesworth. We wanted to do something that was a shared fun experience, spending time with our 60 guests. It also had to reflect who we are so we opted for a three day farm wedding with camping and activities. We also had to be able to organise it ourselves in between farm work and with virtually no budget. We decided to build a wedding village in one of our paddocks to create the feeling of community; a space where people could relax and little kids could play. The tents and food marquees circled an old free standing chimney, ceremony area and children’s play area to create the village feel. A lot of our guests arrived on the Friday to help build and decorate our Wedding Village. Rather than presents we asked guests to bring a plant we can grow in the wedding garden we are going to create, also a plate of tasty homemade treats for afternoon tea.

The plants people brought were beautiful with lots of Australian natives. They were used to decorate the wedding village, along with flowers brought from guests gardens.

We wanted our guests to be a big part of our celebration so we invited them to take on jobs. Phylis made bouquets and button holes, an activity she had never attempted before. We had no idea what they would look like until the day or how she would bring them with her from Sydney, but she did and they looked amazing. The Senches brought along a photo booth and generator, Pammy organised a tea and coffee stand, with the old stove going for 3 days for hot water. The gang from Kew erected the marquees and decorated them with solar lights, table decorations and crockery. The crockery, cutlery and many of the decorations came from local opportunity shops for that lovely eclectic rustic mix, but also to benefit our community. A full sized teepee went up with a bit of effort as we were lacking any skill in that area. The teepee was a

all the best Christmas gifts for your family are hidden in

The wedding was amazing, relaxed and personal, with lots of time to spend with people we care about. The evenings were full of campfires, singing and hot chocolates, the mornings for fishing and exploring. We enjoyed it so much and didn’t want it to end – we might have to start planning some anniversary events!

Birds . . .

Watching birds part 4 By Bob Tate

WITH the onset of summer the bush is filled with the sounds of birds calling to attract their mates ready for breeding. The migrants have all arrived back after their winter holidays up north or other places and the bush is now really alive. One of the species of birds which fill our forests is the Rufous Whistler. A small bird but one which echoes through the forest with several calls, one sounding like a very sharp Eeee-chong and the other a long series of varying notes which often sound like a never ending stream of music. This bird will leave us each autumn to return at the start of the spring each year. It is only about 16-17.5 cms in size with a grey back. The male has a white throat with black bib and a rufous abdomen, whilst the female has a striped

OF THE MURRINDINDI SHIRE rufous/brown abdomen. Both have wing bars of a dark brown colour with some white margins. Despite its wonderful colours it is often hard to find as the voice is very ventriloqual. Destination Acheron With each edition of this magazine I try to highlight a place to look for birds. This time it is the Acheron Road. Travel south from Alexandra for 9kms to the turn to the left on Acheron Road, continue on this road up and over the hill (gravel) and beyond a small strip of bitumen. Park anywhere here off the road and walk the length of the road to dead ends either along the Acheron Road or turn up Yellow Box Road. This road is wide with good vegetation on both sides and often a wealth of birds. The large trees will also have mammals and the Tuan or Brush Tailed Phascogale is known to occur along here.

GREAT VICTORIAN RAIL TRAIL

At back from left: Danielle Roberts and Hanneke Geysen, with Murphy James and Lachlan Roberts zooming along on their balance bikes. By Kat James LAST Saturday, the weather was perfect, but my two year old was full of energy so we thought we’d better make the most of the beautiful day. After a few phone calls there were 3 kids and 3 mums in varying stages of pregnancy making our way to The Great Victorian Rail Trail. The two boys aged 2 years were on their balance bikes, which they can move at a great rate of knots, and the

little one in the pram. We expectant mummies were in no hurry so the flat rail trail was perfect for an easy stroll and the boys could race ahead on their bikes, while we chat away uninterrupted. The great thing about the trail is that it’s very safe for the little ones. There are very few roads to cross and if you do cross a road, you get plenty of warning to be able to bring the tear aways back to your side before crossing

Hosts: Ken & Marie Bristow 56 Nihil Street Alexandra Phone: 03 5772 1146 or 0409 411 816 waverley@ycs.com.au www.waverleyguesthouse.com.au

together and letting them loose again. There are no steep drop offs or gutters to get a wheel stuck in. If you are pushing a pram, the trail is smooth and easy to navigate. Those who are up for a challenge can find the hills, but for us there are plenty of sections to suit. As well as letting the two year olds expel some built up energy we could enjoy a few living creatures along the way. There were ducks

and all sorts of birds, not to mention the cows and sheep along the way too. The boys were also pleased that we could see the highway in sections and got very excited when the big trucks passed us by. After our walk we decided that this should be a regular occurrence and will still suit us as we progress to more of a waddle than a stroll, and even after the new little ones arrive.

Books at Yarck . . . TWO years ago Catherine Wherry and Jeremy Morrison opened “Books at Yarck” on the Maroondah Highway in the charming village of Yarck. Shortly after they moved from Melbourne to Merton they fell in love with the attractive building and the cottage garden at 6591 Maroondah Highway. When it came up for sale Catherine bought it and started planning for its conversion to a second hand bookshop. It is now a friendly independent bookshop, open five days a week (see ad in rail trail section) with an extensive stock well organised by category. This includes a wide range of topics including a good selection of military and sport books as well as cooking, gardening, art, biography, nature, and all

categories of fiction (adult, children, Australian, classics, romance, western, sci-fi and crime).

AN essential part of our community, The Murrindindi Library Service has three libraries and a mobile service. All are air-conditioned and provide a peaceful, stress free environment in which to browse.

There is a cosy area with two chesterfields for reading in comfort inside, and also a “deck with a view” for outdoor reading in fine weather. Patrons are invited to bring their drinks in from any of the nearby cafes. Catherine is an avid reader herself and is happy to assist anyone who needs help with choosing books. Identifying “mystery” books (ones that your friend said you would love, but neglected to give complete details) is one of her specialities as she spent many years as an “information detective” (sometimes known as a librarian). She will also help customers to track down books they are looking for when possible. She is always delighted when she can provide a book that someone has been seeking (maybe for a long time), and it has happened a few times lately. Jeremy’s special interest is military books,

and he has amassed a very impressive collection for Books at Yarck. Sport is another specialty, especially cricket. The shop has lots of windows, providing good natural light, is heated in winter by a wood fired stove, and cooled in summer by an airconditioner. Everyone is made welcome to browse at leisure. Books and magazines are available to suit all pockets from 50 cents, $1, clearance stock for $2, and even a FREE box. The majority of books are priced at less than $10.

Read and access free wi-fi or in house computers with internet. Libraries have both adult and children’s sections and you can borrow new releases and classics, DVDs and audio books to make the miles disappear. Contacts Alexandra, Grant Street, phone 5772 0382. PART 5 ~ WHY NOT THROW IN A HOUSE OF STRAW

Left: learning how to build a straw bale house and, above, a finished dwelling.

Photos courtesy Viva Living Homes.

Huff and puff but you can’t blow this house down! By Emily Friedel CONTRARY to what the Three Little Pigs might have you believe, straw houses can be very tough and enduring structures (not so easy to blow down). Some strawbale homes built in America in the early 1900’s are still standing and being lived in. They are also surprisingly fire resistant, having been tested by the CSIRO to withstand a bushfire up to BAL29 (there are only two bushfire attack levels higher than this). They were tested in Germany up to temperatures of 900 degrees celcius. They can also be exquisitely beautiful. My husband and I are owner/builder hopefuls who are concerned about environmental impact; on a tight budget and clueless when it comes to building. To begin to rectify the latter we recently did a little road trip up to Mudgee in northern NSW, to participate in a very hands-on natural building course at Milkwood Permaculture, run by Sam Vivers of Viva Living Homes. Over four days we were given a basic understanding of a variety of natural

building technique, but for us, with our needs and constraints, strawbale building came out the favourite by a long shot. One of the benefits of strawbale is that it is an incredibly good insulator, with an R-value (measuring resistance to heat loss/gain) of R 8.0, which is many times higher than insulated brick veneer (which has an R-value of R2.0). Such an excellent level of insulation is highly desirable in a very variable climate such as our own. Another desirable characteristic of strawbale construction is how “healthy” it is. The natural materials used don’t give off toxic gases and they “breathe”. By absorbing and releasing moisture they help manage humidity in the air, thereby maintaining a more stable internal environment and resisting the growth of mould, as water doesn’t condense on the surface. In fact, if a lime render or lime wash is used mould can’t grow at all as it is antibacterial and antifungal. Strawbale is, in the scheme of things, a building medium that is relatively accessible to the novice builder.

After constructing and rendering a couple of strawbale walls during the course, our confidence in our ability to do a decent amount of work on our own home grew. We still have a great deal to learn, but it’s certainly doable (and will certainly be an adventure). While we were greatly encouraged by the course, we were also given a dose of reality. Contrary to what many people believe, strawbale homes aren’t that cheap, and if you get someone else to do all the work for you it may cost around the same as a double brick home. The good news is that the cost is largely in the labour, so for owner/builders who are willing to do a significant amount of the work, use plenty of found or recycled materials, build slowly and maybe con a bunch of friends to help, it becomes an affordable option. Possibly the most exciting aspect of strawbale building for us is the opportunity to have a home that we have, at least in part, built with our own hands. Gardening . . . Summer gardens By Sandy Burden Misty Valley Nursery IN THE sunny warm days of summer, our flowering plants provide such a bright and happy space and the cool greens of the leafy trees respite on those hot days. I’d love to introduce you to a few of my favorites – roses – the crepe myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica) and flowering gums. One of the most consistent and reliable flowering plants is the rose and to me a rose is not a rose unless it’s perfumed, not to say there aren’t many beautiful blooms that have little or no scent, but how gorgeous is a rose with both. There are many new roses that flower again and again if they are pruned and the old blooms removed, and they are often more hardy and disease resistant.

My favourite rose at present is Ebb tide with dusky deep purple buds that swirl open into very double, old

fashioned flowers coloured a velvety plum wash with a haze of sultry smoke. This repeat bloomer is intensely clove scented.

traditional deep green, however I also like the blue conifers such as the smooth Arizona cypress (Cupressus glabra) ‘Blue Ice’.

The Firestar rose, the official rose of the CFA, is the first rose in the Firestar series and is best described as a scented deep orange to raspberry pink double flower in clusters.

This lovely symmetrical conifer has neat blue foliage with a silver hue in winter; a classic Christmas tree shape.

It is now joined by Firestar Phoenix, a very fragrant softer deep pink rose that fades little by little into a yellow hue. Both of these roses help raise funds for the CFA. A bunch of roses is a wonderful and traditional gift, how much more wonderful is a rose bush that will keep on giving year after year. The crepe myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica) is a beautiful small ornamental deciduous tree. It flowers mid to late summer in colours from white to pinks, purples and reds. This stunning deciduous tree develops a distinctive mottled trunk and branches

that remain attractive whilst dormant, and crepe myrtles are also available in a shrub or dwarf form. The flowering gums (Corymbia ficifolia) are bursting into full bloom from early January on, with stunning arrays from dusty pinks to vibrant oranges and reds. These native trees, originating from Western Australia, have adapted to the Victorian foothills well with many mature examples in our local gardens. For a number of years grafted varieties have been around and guarantee the colour you choose. There are dwarf forms to natural sized trees from 2 x 2 metres to 6 x 4 metres or seedling grown up to 10 metres in height. There is a great variety of eucalypts to suit smaller garden spaces for tough evergreens trees. As summer begins we think of the Christmas Tree. Why not have a living tree rather than a cut tree which only lasts a few weeks? A potted Norway spruce gives the

Last but not least are the humble hydrangeas. These shrubs, known for their huge flower heads, seem to have been in our gardens forever. I remember blues and pinks depending on the soil PH, but there is much more to them; the white Hydrangea arborescens stays white and there are pinks and blues that do also. Different forms of flower exist like the delicate lace cap (Hydrangea macrophylla normalis). They fit in the garden as a wonderful planting under trees or under windows and they are restricted only by our imaginations and the harsh westerly summer sun, but then aren’t all our gardens. Happy New Year and Happy Gardening.

Pet power . . . Pets for the Elderly By Denia Ford MURRINDINDI Shire is a choice location for many retirees, a collection of quiet and comfortable towns nestled in picturesque hills, not too far from Melbourne. Regardless of age,

employment or social status, pet ownership can benefit a person’s mental and physical wellbeing and as a veterinarian, this is particularly evident for an ageing population of owners. For the elderly owner, their pet is a constant and reliable source of companionship – someone to talk to when they are alone; to provide comfort and support in times of sadness; most importantly, someone to care for – a reason to get up and make the most of every day. Studies reflect elderly citizens that own a pet make fewer visits to the doctor and are less likely to suffer high blood pressure and depression than those without a pet. Having to walk or play with their dog keeps elderly

owners active without it seeming like a big effort. Walking down the street or rail trail and visiting the local park also provides many social opportunities with their pet being a starting point for conversation. My 85 year old Nan is the perfect example – her dog Kobi accompanies her on her daily walk to the shops to get the paper and be prepared for a chat if you ask how her dog is. Security is another reason she loves having Kobi around, as do many elderly pet owners. He barks when someone comes to the door and she even tells the story of when he attracted her attention to my Pa who had fallen and was unable to get up – her “SuperDog”. You don’t necessarily have to own a pet to reap the benefits they offer.

Pets are allowed to visit residents of both Kellock Lodge in Alexandra and Darlingford Nursing Home in Eildon. Twistie the Jack Russell is frequently seen around the halls of Darlingford with one resident, Marcia, a particular fan. She said having Twistie visit makes her “feel whole again” – she loves having him around to talk to and to care for. Of course it isn’t just the owners that benefit from having a pet – the pet of a retired owner most definitely appreciates extra time they get to spend with a human companion that has fewer work commitments. It is always nice to work with older clients who have an extra special bond to their pet as you know they will be treated well and loved dearly.

Mud puddles . . .

THERE seems to be a bit of a buzz around town about a fitness trend that has swept through the major centres and is slowly creeping it’s way across the nation – obstacle racing! A few years back the industry was primarily US and UK based and only for the ‘hardcore’ or ‘mad’ athlete. The first event, taking place in the UK was aptly named ‘Tough Guy’ – a four-hour foray into every experience known to man: water, ice, electricity, fire, and mud to name but a few. The industry in Australia started with a few small operators and has, over the

last 12 to 18 months, grown into a credible and exciting way to stay fit and interested in your training. Each course is greatly different in shape and style with one common theme – you are going to get covered in mud! A local Melbourne company, aptly named The Warrior Challenge runs three events per annum at Lake Mountain. Participants run a 14.4km course jumping over walls, crawling through mud, swimming through ice pits and some wear crazy costumes while doing it! Managing Director, Al Gray,

AT LAKE MOUNTAIN

says that this is an excellent and exciting way to maintain your fitness. “These courses are demanding and physical in nature and we recommend a degree of preparation prior to participating.” “That said, the Warrior Challenge is one obstacle race that is tailored to what we call the ‘everyday hero.” “We have parents participating with their teenage kids, people competing in an event for the first time, CrossFit trained athletes, and groups out to just have a good time. In fact, in our summer event,

the Viking Challenge, we have a fancy dress leg where we have a prize for the best dressed Viking.” “We encourage families to participate together, and teenagers to compete as it is a fantastic and fun way to keep fitness exciting, and it also makes for a great FaceBook profile picture when you exit the mud pits,” Al said Winter races are usually in July, summer races in early December and March. The next challenge at Lake Mountain is on Saturday 7th December. Entry is via the website at www. warriorchallenge.com.au.

Mark Austin with Sam Eagles on a Harley and Roger McCallum on a Suzuki lead a group of local riders out of Alexandra on a weekend ride. Yea’s final meeting on the Saturday of the Australia Day long weekend features the Yea Picnic Cup. Big things are in progress at Yea with Racing Victoria completely re-railing the track with the new, safer flexible plastic running rail. There are plenty of opportunities to reserve a site for your group under the shady elm trees at any of the three meetings. Have a family celebration, party or anniversary, a Christmas break up, even a wedding or a buck’s party. Several local caterers are available to assist a function although many visitors like to self cater. There are also plenty of facilities – a licensed bar, barbecue, pizza oven and club house catering on the course each day along with plenty of bookmakers and an on course TAB. Pony rides, face painting and a jumping castle are there to entertain the children.

STRENGTH sports in Australia seem to get lost and under appreciated amidst a sea of tattoo covered AFL players, rowdy rugby league players, celebrity dating cricketers, and a swath of touring mutlimillionaire international sports stars.
