Treasured trash . . .
Above: Sheepish. Right: Chook Chaser, creations by Alastair Mason. By Emily Friedel “CHOOK Chaser” started life as a motorbike brought home by Alastair Mason’s fourteen-yearold son, Lachey, as a fixer upper. Found to be beyond repair, the motorbike was destined to be reborn as a work of art when the swing arm serendipidously fell down and hit the back of Alastair’s leg. At that moment, what had been a bit of old junk looked very much like a bird to Alastair and he began building the legs, with the intention of constructing a vulture. As work progressed, however, the sculpture evolved into a giant rooster and was given its title not only because chook chasing is what roosters do, but in honour of the clapped out old farm bike, or “chook chaser”, that provided much of the raw materials. In addition to the cannibalised motorbike, the strutting rooster has old plough parts for tail feathers and comb, chainsaw chains for leg feathers and even an eggbeater in its head. The “eggbeater brain” came about after hours of hunting through scrap metal, trying to find the perfect piece to fill the empty space in the head. That’s a big part of Alastair’s creative process: fitting the pieces together in exactly the right way. “It’s amazing how long things can float around, Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2014/2015 – 9
then get a new job in life,” he says.
Left: Alastair Mason. Above: at work in his studio. Below: “African Mask”.
As a kid, Alastair made 1:24 scale models of cars and later got into woodworking. His current style of sculpting developed after learning to weld about six years ago. Alastair still uses his woodwork skills, and likes the effect wood and steel, organic and inorganic, can have when combined. “Sheepish” (a sculpture of a formidable fish, named because of the sheep skull used and for the irony) is a perfect example of the striking aesthetic that skillfully turned wood and scrap metal can produce. The idiom “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” is definitely apt for Alastair, who often finds gifts of old mechanical parts, wood and barbed wire deposited on his doorstep. He gets materials wherever he can and is always on the lookout; his troop carrier gearbox being rebuilt was just another opportunity to bring home a box of goodies to be converted into sculptures. Alastair’s careful choice of parts and attention to detail produce quite remarkable sculptures; this 10 – Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2014/2015
was recognised by those at this year’s Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show when “Chook Chaser” won the People’s Choice Award. The impressive rooster sculpture was also part of this year’s Tesselaar Gardening & Plants Expo Acquisition Exhibition (an exhibition where the winner receives a monetary prize and Tesselaar acquires the entered artwork and puts it on public display). “Chook Chaser” may be more of a phoenix than a rooster: a bird rising from a pile of discarded motorbike and plough parts. It takes a special gift to look at what is essentially rubbish and see the potential for great beauty, and Alastair’s exceptional art is the product of just such a gift.
Fermentation fascination . . .
Above: fermented kale. Right: beet kvass. By Emily Friedel and Rohan Dodds OUR foray into fermentation was triggered by fridgelessness (lack of a functional refrigerator). We learned the hard way how quickly food can spoil, especially during hot weather. Sick of vegetables looking sorry within a day or two of harvest and chunky milk, we began to research ways to prolong the life of our perishable foods and wandered into the fascinating world of fermenting. Fermenting, in particular lactofermenting (encouraging the proliferation of Lactobacillus –
bacteria which convert sugars to lactic acid), is an easy way to prolong the life of food. We have found it especially helpful for preserving vegetables we’d grown but couldn’t keep up with eating fresh or giving away. Not only is lacto-fermenting an easy (and in our opinion delightfully fun) way to preserve the harvest, it also comes with a raft of health benefits. Fermentation predigests food making nutrients more bioavailable, can break down or remove toxins or anti-nutrients and may generate additional nutrients. For example,

a 2004 study published in the Journal of Food Science found that lactofermentation of ground sorghum significantly increased the protein quality as well as niacin and thiamin levels of the grain. According to Sandor Katz, author of The Art of Fermentation, “Ferments with live lactic-acid-producing bacteria intact are especially supportive of digestive health, immune function, and general well-being.”
Above: sauerkraut is a great place to start experimenting with making your own fermented foods. Left: lacto-fermenting is the perfect solution to a glut of broccoli from the veggie patch.
So prolonging the life of food through fermentation may also prolong your life. Before attempting lactofermentation, it helps to understand the basic science behind the process. Various strains of Lactobacillus are naturally present on the surface of all plants, so any organically produced fruits and vegetables already contain the key ingredient (you can also use whey strained from yoghurt to boost Lactobacillus levels). Lactobacilli are relatively salt tolerant, so adding salt creates an environment where they can thrive but harmful bacteria can’t. The thriving Lactobacilli can then go about converting sugars and starches in plant material to lactic acid, which is a natural preservative that inhibits the growth
of harmful or putrefying bacteria. Hence, the basic ingredients for one of the better-known lacto-fermented products, sauerkraut, are: cabbage and salt. So simple! And a great place to start for anyone interested in trying to make their own fermented foods. Here is a basic sauerkraut recipe adapted from The Art of Fermentation: • Cut up cabbage of your choice (any type, or a mixture of types). • Place cut up cabbage in a bowl and rub salt into it with your fingers (roughly 1.5 to 2% of the weight of the cabbage, so around 1½ to 2 teaspoons of salt

per 500g of cabbage). • Push the cabbage into a jar or crock, packing it down as tightly as possible and squeezing the moisture out of it. • Make sure the cabbage is submerged under the liquid (add filtered or rainwater if need be). You can also keep the cabbage submerged by weighing it down with a plate or even a scrubbed clean and boiled stone (or anything else you can find that will do the job). • Cover the jar or crock with a lid or clean cloth. If you seal the jar with a lid be sure to release the pressure regularly as carbon dioxide
is produced during fermentation. • Start tasting the kraut after about a week, the flavour will change over time so you may want to leave it longer, testing every now and again. • If it smells or looks “off” at any stage err on the side of caution and chuck it in the compost! Once you have a feel for the basic sauerkraut you can experiment with any number of additions: grated carrot, berries, apple, dill seeds – you’re only limited by your imagination. And from there the veggie patch or local grocery will be a playground for fermentation experimentation.

Nice as pie . . .
NEE’S HIGH APPLE PIES
By Emily Friedel
HAVING her bare hands submerged in dough, feeling its texture and consistency, is something Anita Gottwalt revered from an early age. She has cherished memories of standing on a chair at her grandmother’s kitchen bench, arms deep in an oversized mixing bowl, creating culinary delights. A little over 18 months ago, after moving to Kinglake with her husband and two children, Anita decided to develop her love of baking into a small business. Anita’s “high” (as in tall – no skimping on the filling!) apple pies have always been a winner with friends and family, so it was natural that she chose this as a focus for her business. In fact, it was the overwhelmingly positive response to a post of one of her high apple pie photos on local social media that was the final nudge needed for the genesis for Nee’s High Apple Pies. Anita’s current apple pie recipe is the culmination of family secrets and many years of tinkering. The pastry she uses is based on a recipe her step-father gave her and those early cooking sessions with her grandmother, where she discovered the tactile pleasures of baking, still provide inspiration: “I am very particular about my pastry; the consistency, the texture and feel (raw and cooked).” Of course, a pie is only as good as its base ingredients and for her delectable

fillings Anita sources apples and berries locally from Apted’s Orchards in Arthur’s Creek and Blueberry Hill in Kinglake respectively. Anita’s dedication to attaining pie perfection recently paid off when she received accolades in the Official Great Aussie Pie Competition (part of the Fine Foods Australia Expo). Her apple pie entry won gold in the Gourmet Gluten Free section and two other entries took bronze in the Gourmet section. Native Finger Lime (Citrus australasica) By Angus Stewart THE Australian flora has a number of species of citrus that have, until recent years, been little known or grown by gardeners. The upswing in interest in growing edible plants
generally has fuelled an upsurge in the availability of the indigenous citrus varieties with the native finger lime leading the way. It produces thumb-shaped fruits that release a tangy flesh that is sometimes referred to as ‘citrus caviar’
because of its spherical shape. There are a number of cultivars now available through the nursery industry that feature different coloured fruits, ranging from green to brown or even red, and the zest from the skin is
full of delightfully aromatic oils that can be used in cooking. The flowers are relatively small and starshaped and are an attractive feature when you get up close to the plant. Native finger lime grows into an upright shrub with

spiky foliage that protects the small native birds that sometimes nest amongst the foliage. The growing requirements of the native finger lime are similar to those of the more tender types of exotic citrus. In the southern states the native finger lime will certainly need protection from frost. As with all fruit trees you will probably get the best result by seeking out a cultivar that has been propagated vegetatively, usually by grafting. Feed the plants with a low phosphorus native plant fertiliser at the beginning of spring and again at the end of summer. Yellowing of the new growth can result from iron deficiency that can be treated by a dose of chelated iron or iron sulphate. Mulch your plant to a depth of about 5 cm to keep moisture levels even, a practice that is particularly important during flowering and fruit set. Finger limes are used in the kitchen in a variety of ways and can certainly be used as a direct substitute for exotic limes for drinks, desserts and as a flavour enhancement for savoury dishes such as salads and Asian dishes. In addition to these uses, the little balls of ‘citrus caviar’ (that are extracted by cutting the end off the fruit and gently squeezing) can be used as a decorative and flavour enhancing garnish for a range of recipes limited only by your imagination! ESSENCE COFFEE LOUNGE, ALEXANDRA
By Cara Danieli
“I’M a big believer in what is meant to be will be” says Toni “and the café just sort of fell into my lap.” Toni Carter grew up in the Alexandra district and always dreamed of having her own business. Although not looking for a café at the time, when the opportunity arose Toni jumped at it. “It was the building, it just has this charisma.” Toni believes the best part of running the business is the customers. This is made clear through the way customers are greeted; always with a smile, the locals by name with the coffee they like

about the ambience of the shop that makes it special.
“We love our customers. Getting to know them, chatting with them, that’s what I love. We want our customers to know how grateful we are,” says Toni.
“We employ seven staff, and every one of them makes an effort to create a friendly, comfortable vibe for our customers.”
“Above all, we want them to be happy.” There really is something
The café has been in Toni’s hands for four years now, “a four years that has gone much too quickly.”
She acquired the café on the long weekend of June 2010, and had it completely renovated in three weeks, ready for business on 1st July. “It all happened rather quickly.” Toni loves the café, and is always finding ways to make it better. Currently, a courtyard is being created at the back of the café. It will be
finished in time for summer to accommodate the busy season. Toni likes to add diversity to the shop, even having themed nights such as Mexican or Chinese. “We like variety” says Toni, explaining the seasonal menu change and daily specials. “I’m excited about the summer menu coming very soon.” Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2014/2015 – 19

Not only is Toni a foodie in the café, she’s a foodie in other aspects of the community, particularly the football club, and has been for 15 years. Toni is on the ladies committee which does catering at the club; Thursday night dinners, canteen on Saturdays and Sundays, as well as catering for other events that may be held through the club. She is very community oriented, with her involvement not only in the football club, but the traders association and her willingness to lend a hand, providing gift vouchers and hampers for community groups. “When the chance arose to meet Bette Phillips from Creative Ministries, and helpers involved in the Truck Drivers Memorial I jumped to their support; resulting in the honour board being
erected in the cafe before the permanent memorial was erected in Rotary Park. It brings families and loved ones to our town,” Toni said. “We are this year’s recipient of the Rotary Club Excellence in Business award, which is a great honour and one we don’t take lightly. We were nominated by some very special customers who appreciate our business.” Toni also does outside catering for private functions, from sandwiches to dinners. The café is open seven days a week, providing a comfortable place to relax with a coffee, enjoy a meal, and even have a friendly chat with the staff. Toni is glad every day that she took the leap. “Have faith in yourself and what you want to do,” Toni advises, “Just have faith.”

local and Victorian artists, featuring a range of art forms including photography, water colour painting, mixed media artworks including ceramics, recycled metal and timberwork, pastels, textiles and a range of other contemporary and more traditional art forms. The motivation behind the exhibition is to encourage creative gift giving of a handcrafted variety this festive season by providing an alternative gift option of quality, affordable art. The exhibiton opens from 6pm Friday 28th November with drinks and nibbles. This affordable art exhibition runs throughout December and the Christmas / New Year holiday period and will undergo a refresh and a renewal of artworks post Boxing Day, as the earlier
pieces on display will likely have found new homes over Christmas! Further Reflections Resident photographer, Cindy Ferguson has had a passion for photography from a very early age but exhibited only for the first time six years ago. Cindy held her first solo photographic exhibition,
‘Reflections’ to coincide with the opening of her gallery and gift shop in Alexandra in November 2011. Several years on, ‘Further Reflections’ marks the fourth exhibition of Cindy’s photography to be held at Rustic Simplicity, and for the second year running, she will team up with ceramicist and mixed media artist, Peter Hook. Peter has taught art and has exhibited widely both throughout Australia and overseas. Peter is currently living in regional Victoria, where he is developing his own artist studio. Ceramics often adorn his mixed media artworks, as do found objects and embellished metal and timber pieces. This joint exhibition of
photography by Cindy Ferguson and mixed media by Peter Hook explores reflections of their recent and more distant pasts, drawing on their life’s journeys, their places of origin, and the child within. The exhibition is open from 6pm Friday 23rd January until Monday 9th March 2015.

AT THE STATION
It’s all about the horses High on Mt Magdala. By Margaret Beer MY friend Zilla called out of the blue just before New Year: “There is a vacancy on my horse ride in the Victorian High Country and we go in two week’s time!” Well of course I said, “No way” – after all I am no
spring chicken and hadn’t been astride a noble steed for more than 20 years. Later that day, after some spousal encouragement and a scotch, I called back and said, “Of course I will go”. Then panic set in. I needed to at least have a practice.
Three riding school lessons, a couple of short rides with a kind friend and a severe yoga workout later, I considered myself to be as ready as I would ever be. For this ride, I was an honorary member of the “Forbes Mob.” We set off
from Forbes, arriving at Merrijig Lodge with time for a recovery day before the big ride and taking full advantage of what would be our last access to beds and hot showers for over a week. Day 1: Early on Monday morning, the saddled horses Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2014/2015 – 23

Right: author in training. were trucked to the lower slopes of Mt Buller where I discovered I would be riding the wonderful Mouse, recently returned to trekking after bringing up her foal. There were fourteen guest riders, four staff including Chris Dunlop (the grand master of High Country Horses) and a couple of spare horses that ran free. The support vehicles with Chris’ wife (and accomplished camp cook) Fiona had already begun their journey to meet us for lunch at Bindaree Hut. From Bindaree Hut we travelled along the Howqua River to the overnight camp at Pike’s Flat. It was an “easy day” for the horses and riders to bond. It was also stinking hot, so a splash in the river was very welcome. Mouse and I were getting along fine and so far the body (mine) was holding out. Day 2: The Sixteen Mile Track, all uphill, was our challenge for the Tuesday. We bush-bashed through plenty of fallen trees and support team member Paddy needed his 24 – Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2014/2015
trusty chainsaw to get us through on this hot morning. Gemma, an inexperienced horse just learning the ropes and running free, gave us some nervous moments when she thought she knew a better way! Gorgeous wildflowers greeted us along the ride to Bluff Hut, where we stopped for lunch and soaked up the amazing view. From there we rode up and over Mt. Lovick to find Lovick’s Hut for the night. The horses had their usual evening care of a wash, nosebag, check for injuries or sore muscles and were let loose in a paddock around the camp. Day 3: At breakfast on Wednesday, Chris warned of a very steep climb that day and anyone nervous of heights should let him know. “Well!......” I squeaked, “Meeeee!” I was ready to bail and go in the support truck, but I think that may have been worse, considering some of the goat tracks it traversed. Finally, reasoning that Chris wouldn’t ask us to do it
if we couldn’t, I swallowed the nerves and got going. After several steep climbs, each time thinking “this must be the one he is talking about”, Chris called a halt. Before we ascended Mt Magdala, he arranged the horses in the order they would best scramble up to the summit. The calm, sturdy Mouse and I were somewhere in the middle and by then the nerves had gone. It is amazing the absolute trust one can put in a four-legged creature. Mind you, I didn’t look too often at the beautiful scenery over the cliff a couple of
Chris Dunlop leading at The Bluff. metres to the left! Mouse, on the other hand, seemed to enjoy the view and often gazed way off to the distance during our journey. I think she may have been a brumby in an earlier life. We devoured saddle bag lunches at the foot of Mt Howitt, then climbed to the flat summit where our twenty hot and thirsty mounts drained a waterhole. We sucked on the remaining water from of our saddle bags and continued on to McAllister Springs – cold spring water, green grass and shady trees AND the most amazing public toilet with huge glass windows over the valley. After an extended rest (some of us may have napped under a tree…) we hopped back in the saddle for our journey across Howitt’s
Plains: beautiful, high and treeless with storm clouds as a dramatic backdrop. We didn’t arrive at Howitt’s Hut until nearly dark, and must have been quite a sight twenty horses coming home across the plains at dusk - to the travellers with little children watching at the horse paddock gate. Day 4: Now, before we proceed, I should say that this ride was entitled “The 8 Day Wonnangatta Mystery Ride”. What I didn’t realise was that it was also a mystery to the organisers! We saddled up quite late on Thursday morning with Fiona planning an easy ride with us for the day, she had been informed by Chris that it was “only a couple of hours” and that the steep bit was only short. She should have known her husband
better! We found our way across the flat plains to the start of the “terrible descent” (with all due respect to Banjo Paterson) and scrambled down, down, down for several hours. Sometimes the line stopped, with horses nearly vertical, while a rubber horse boot was replaced and then down we’d go again. We reached the flat country at the head of Wonnangatta Valley with relief and munched our packed lunches in the steamy scrub. Wonnangatta Station is flat and grassy and protected by towering mountains (we had just ridden down THAT?) on all sides. It was a spectacular afternoon riding in to the old homestead site on the river where we set up camp under the elm trees. Day 5: The early morning
light heralded a very hot day and for the hard working horses and weary humans it was a day of rest. We wallowed in Conglomerate Creek with water dragons sheltering from the fierce sun under the bank. Day 6: And so the long climb out of Wonnangatta Valley and the three day journey home began. We rode along the Wonnangatta Track and up to Van Damme’s Helipad for a rest, then on to the junction of West Buffalo Road and Penny Track for a late lunch before heading downhill again to reach the flats and riding on to camp near Catherine Station. Exhaustion was starting to get the better of me and I wasn’t the only one feeling weary - we would all fall over our swags with tiredness and just lie there! The Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2014/2015 – 25
horses were doing well and continued to receive their exceptional care. In fact, that night, they were feeling lively enough to stage the “great escape”. It was a full moon and windy and the electric fence did not look daunting enough so they decided to go home, galloping past the tents at midnight. The staff used a substantial amount of good sleeping time corralling them and we spent the morning searching for several expensive rubber boots thrown in the spree. Day 7: We set off again along the picturesque Buffalo River valley with a cool breeze to add a little comfort to the glorious morning. A little cantering was called for to cover ground. I think it was actually a gallop – a while since I had done that!!! “I’m here to challenge you,” said Chris, and he was certainly delivering on that promise. Then it was up, up, up again towards Lake Cobbler. It was a very long climb, so to arrive at the top and see chairs set out with lunch awaiting, surrounded by 360 degree views of the smoke hazed mountains, was bliss. The bushfires in Gippsland were burning during the furnacelike weather but it was green and grassy up there in the Victorian High Country. After lunch it was “just through a couple of ups and downs” according to Paddy (code for a couple of hours) and the sight of Lake Cobbler sent everyone into whoops of joy. It was our last night – what can I say? Exhaustion, nostalgia, and it was COOL.

26 – Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2014/2015
Day 8: We warmed up our horses, a little stiff from the cold night air, and set off downhill again along Cobbler Track, down the very steep and stony Staircase, and then to King Hut where the support crew waited.
Paint horse Gemma, riderless, decided the waiting horse truck looked like a good idea after what she had been through and almost loaded herself! The horses were trucked out from a little further along King River and we rocked around in the back of a troopy while Glen drove us back to the Lodge for a hot shower and a farewell dinner. It was all over. The great mystery ride. The ride was challenging and, for me, a very intense experience. I asked Chris why he would take an inexperienced newcomer like me on a ride like that and his reply: “It’s all about the horses!” *** There have been many good riders claiming to be the model for The Man From Snowy River, the best known being Jack Riley. Banjo was cagey enough to never divulge his inspiration, and so kept the myth going.
In his carefully researched book ’Searching for The Man From Snowy River’ WF Refshauge eliminates all contenders but one on the grounds of wrong age, wrong place, wrong time. The only candidate left standing is Charles ‘Charlie Mac’ McKeahnie born 29 April 1868 and died in a fall from his horse in Bredbo NSW on 3 August 1895. Charlies family bred fine horses (capable of running down a fast wild horse) and his favourite past time was brumby chasing. Margaret Beer’s grandmother Edith Dulhunty (nee McKeahnie) was a first cousin to Charlie Mac so as a third cousin to Charlie Mac maybe Margie can claim that the spirit of the Man From Snowy River was riding with her . . . There are small, cosy sitting rooms dotted throughout the building that give residents the opportunity to meet with visitors quietly and privately (something that is not often available in aged care facilities, says Kellock CEO Suzanne Sawyer).

The great outdoors . . .
Alexandra Secondary College Hillary Challenge Team: raft build challenge.
A voyage of self discovery with the Outdoor Education Group By Emily Friedel
accessible to anyone.
IMAGINE how eerie a possum call in the dead of night would sound to a kid who’d spent their entire life in Hong Kong! For two Chinese girls who arrived in Australia one day and found themselves camping in the bush the next, those guttural sounds were positively frightening!
Pete Griffiths, OEG Director of Business Development, says: “Our work is more important to us than simply business. It’s all about getting more people outdoors.”
For those two girls, learning that the strange noises were nothing to be scared of and that they had the capacity to cope in situations outside of their comfort zone, was all part of the voyage of selfdiscovery and development of resilience that are central to an Outdoor Education Group (OEG) program. OEG works with a diverse range of both school and community groups, striving to make their programs
In fact, in 1996 OEG made the decision to become a not-for-profit organisation to ensure they were prioritising outcomes for their participants rather than working to benefit shareholders. With groups of people from all walks of life seeking them out, OEG must cater for widely differing needs and abilities, and believe the only way to do this properly is to tailor each and every program to the group it is intended for. For this reason, OEG’s programs are often two years in the making
and involve a great deal of careful planning; long-term relationships with schools and community groups are sought rather than “flash-inthe-pan” programs. Counter to the culture of risk aversion that has pervaded parenting and schooling for the past decade, OEG uses a solid framework of risk management to allow greater exploration, giving kids an opportunity to test their boundaries and understand that their decisions have consequences. Bush walks at their Marysville camp are planned so that kids walk through streams, lift rocks and generally get wet and dirty – the kids absolutely love it! It is the philosophy that risk, when carefully managed,
can be a powerful tool for personal development and building resilience that allows OEG to provide genuinely adventurous programs, such as an extended hike in Tasmania that included three days off track and even swimming across the Franklin River en route to Frenchmans Cap. Such programs are the culmination of many years’ work with a school developing outdoor skills and personal qualities such as taking responsibility for the individual’s and the group’s welfare, and they remind us of how capable young people are when given the chance to extend themselves. Thankfully, the tide of risk aversion is slowly turning as a mounting body of research suggests that regular Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2014/2015 – 33
Alexandra Secondary College Hillary Challenge Team: finish line at the national finals. unstructured outdoor play and connecting with nature provide a host of benefits in terms of children’s development, including boosting self-esteem, reducing anxiety levels and improving problem-solving skills. This changing attitude was reflected in one school principal’s specific request that managed risk be included in the OEG program for his students in order for them to learn how to deal with things that aren’t planned. Pete says that an increasing number of children coming through OEG programs have parents who don’t have practical outdoor skills. So while recognition of the value of outdoor activities is increasing, there is also the challenge of supplying role models and teachers to guide the incoming wave of second generation 34 – Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2014/2015
heavily urbanised, outdoorinexperienced people. To help meet the growing demand for outdoor education staff, OEG works in partnership with local training providers to deliver the highest standard in vocational training. Charlotte Bisset, CEO of CEACA (Continuing Education and Arts Centre of Alexandra) says: “CEACA and OEG were integral partners in the establishment of the Murrindindi Training Institute, whose fundamental purpose was to link local industries with education and enhance training opportunities within the local region.” Pete, who has been working in the field for some 30 years, advocates outdoor education as a great career path and would encourage more people, particularly
Murrindindi Shire locals, to look into it. In fact, OEG is one of the biggest employers in the Shire and they would love to have more local staff on board. Providing employment is but one of the ways in which OEG supports the local community. They work with numerous local community groups and schools and even source local produce wherever possible for their catering. Lauren Sartori of Berry Street says: “The partnership between Berry Street and OEG has been successful and long standing. For the past eight years, Berry Street and OEG have been working together with Alexandra Secondary College and the Alice Sloan Trust to deliver the Alice Sloan Youth Leadership Program. This program provides local
young women with an opportunity to experience an outdoor expedition which assists them to identify and build on personal strengths before beginning a year-long leadership program. Additionally, this partnership has enabled young people more generally to access outdoor experiences in their local area … including those who are disengaging from school and/or their community. Outdoor education components of programs for vulnerable youth can be pivotal in assisting these young people to develop the personal skills that they require to meet their full potential.” This year, OEG celebrates its 30th birthday – a huge milestone for an organisation that was started by three canoeing instructors who each chipped in $1000
Alice Sloan Youth Leadership Program expedition participants: above, rafting on the Goulburn River and, below, returning home after their 10 day expedition! to get the project off the ground. Over the past 30 years as OEG has expanded and reached more people, its aims and guiding philosophy have remained steadfast: “Outdoor education at its core can be as simple as fresh air, exercise, connecting with nature and with friends,” says Pete. This sentiment is echoed by Alexandra Secondary College students, Tilly Bessant and Laura
Gillespie who participated in OEG’s Hillary Challenge (a series of outdoor adventure challenges for school teams) this year: “[The] Hillary Challenge has been an amazing experience and has challenged us both mentally and physically. We have been involved in a variety of activities that we would never have had the chance to experience before such as initiatives of all descriptions, multi-sport races, a rogaine,
endurance runs and bike rides. All of us have become a lot closer and we have learnt a lot about ourselves and each other. We have completed many training sessions that have built our teamwork and leadership skills. It’s been really challenging at times but it has been heaps of fun.” The simple act of reconnecting people with nature can have profound
and enduring effects. For those two girls from Hong Kong, the memories of their camping trip in the Australian bush and the insights it gave them will no doubt last a lifetime. Likewise, the 30,000 students who are lucky enough to participate in an OEG program each year will take away their own valuable experiences, memories and friendships.

Birds . . .
Watching birds By Bob Tate AN area not previously available for bird watching is the Great Victorian Rail Trail and there are many parts along this route which provide excellent places to observe birds. One favourite is the section between Cathkin reserve and Molesworth. There is plenty of parking which ever end you decide to start. Along the route are many lagoons and water holes of various sizes and which, when containing water, will also harbour many bird species including waders, ducks, crakes and rails as well as nearby bush birds. One of these birds which is regularly seen along this section is the Yellow billed spoonbill which may be
OF THE MURRINDINDI SHIRE
observed with its bill in the water probing for food. For these birds to gain maximum advantage of these wetlands the water levels do not need to be high, as most of them will feed along the muddy edge. The spoonbills The spoonbills are rather large wading birds of which there are two species in Australia, the yellow billed, which we see here in Alexandra and the royal which is more of a coastal or salty area bird. The yellow billed is the larger, up to 90 centimetres high whereas the royal is slightly smaller at 80 centimetres. They are characterised by their large, wide, spoonshaped bills. The royal has a black bill and legs whereas
the yellow has a yellow bill and legs. The end of the bill further opens out to look like a spoon, and when feeding this is held slightly open and swung from side to side. This movement in conjunction with the bird wading around with its large feet stirs up the aquatic life on which it feeds. The food is then grabbed by rather hook like structures in the mouth. The bird throws its head upwards and back and the food drops into the back of the mouth to get swallowed. 700 items have been found in the stomach of one spoonbill. The shape of the bill was developed before the science of physics and the Venturi effect explains the reason why. Place a spoon in a glass of water with
sediment in the bottom and move it from side to side. The flow of water over the curved surface causes differences in pressure in the water creating movement which stirs up the sediment. Both species are found all over Australia where wetland habitat occurs but not in the central desert areas. However the yellow billed favours still fresh water so is more likely to be found around farm dams and inland swamps. The royal favours salty areas and therefore found around the coast or anywhere there are salty type swamps. I have seen flocks of 50 or more royals on the town common in Townsville in Queensland. There is a yellow billed which regularly visits our place in Alexandra and I have seen it on other dams in the surrounding area.

Aqua cafe & bar . . .
So much to offer at Eildon marina By Anthony Mitrow QUEENSLANDERS Greg and Tracy never imagined that “gloomy Victoria” would be the place for this waterloving couple to settle, but spending some time in Eildon’s houseboat scene quickly changed their minds. The region’s beauty and potential was too much to resist, and when they received an offer to manage the reopening restaurant next to Eildon’s exclusive boat club, it was too good to refuse.
Top: tasty food, sincere service and a beautiful view makes for a relaxing afternoon by the lake. Above: Greg and Tracy are keen to promote all the region has to offer.
The couple are now preparing for what they anticipate will be their busiest season yet at Aqua Bar and Café at 190 Sugarloaf Road, Eildon.
Sitting in the tastefully refurbished restaurant, taking in the panoramic view of green hills rising out of the clear blue lake, they talk of more growth and potential on the horizon. “I think initially there were people on the houseboats who wanted to keep (this part of Lake Eildon) as the best kept secret,” Greg said. “But the more attention we bring to what’s on offer here, the more facilities we get, and the more facilities you get, the more you’re able to fully enjoy the lake.” Greg said Eildon was uniquely positioned to cater for lake users. “We’ve got a pontoon down there so people can come Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2014/2015 – 45

There are houseboats at the top-end that can take around 14 people, but then you’ve also got pontoon boats for small groups that can be taken out

for a day or half day. “If you’re thinking about a houseboat holiday you can come up here and sit out on the deck, have a drink and consider your options.” With few venues having direct access to Lake Eildon, Greg said another choice has been greatly appreciated. “Before this place opened there were really only three ‘destinations’ you could get to directly from the water. One was the Jamieson Hotel, one was the Bonnie Doon pub, there’s Jerusalem Creek, and when this opened up here it became the fourth destination,” he said. “We are a destination that

offers a marina people can moor on. Even when the water is low, there is always water in this end of the lake. You will never have to walk through the mud. “But the prime attraction at Aqua is being able to sit in comfort and get great service while looking out at the boats on the water – it’s a beautiful view.” The shade sails over Aqua’s popular deck area have now been replaced with an all weather roof so it can be enjoyed the whole season through. Murrindindi residents have also been taking advantage of Aqua’s prime location.
Greg and Tracy said they were pleased to be making one of the most beautiful parts of the region more accessible to the public. “This section was closed to the public for 13 years. When we first opened up two season’s ago, people (from the Eildon township) were coming up and they haven’t been up to look at the lake for five years,” he said. “And we’ve made sure, menu-wise, it’s good value for money. We don’t try to be a five star place – it’s here for people to relax and enjoy. “There’s a great range of food from fish and chips to chicken chardonnay.

Houseboat heaven . . .
By Tim Skerritt BACK in the 1950’s motorboating was the burgeoning new summer recreational pursuit. My grandfather, who owned the Alexandra Ford dealership, had the fastest boat on the Weir back then, a wooden clinker called “Galaxie” powered by an inboard Ford side-valve V8 and capable of 50 miles per hour! Lake Eildon’s surface area was dramatically increased after the new dam wall was completed in ‘56 and its wide flat waters provided for miles of exploration. By the early ‘60’s fibreglass skiboats were being imported from the USA and as kids we used to camp out at Fraser Park watching our dads and uncles showing off their water-skiing prowess, a new sport that was spurred on by the development of the outboard motor. With Lake Eildon the only inland waterway in Victoria
allowing houseboats, houseboating became increasingly popular, with early versions being little more than a plywood caravan strapped to a few forty-four gallon drums with a small outboard for propulsion. Sanitary facilities often amounted to a hole in the floor with everything else thrown over the side! Since those early days houseboat building and maintenance is now a multimillion dollar industry in Eildon. New regulations allowing houseboats of up to 60ft long and 25ft wide mean the industry can now sustain itself twelve months of the year, supporting dozens of businesses employing specialised engineers and tradesmen, and pouring valuable tourist dollars into our local economy. Modern houseboats, some costing up to two million dollars, are holiday homes on water, with up to three decks and powered by twin
diesel inboards or twin petrol inboard/outboards. Providing year-round comfort with state-of-the-art technology, air-conditioned heating and cooling, modern kitchens, en-suites and entertaining areas, some even have spa-baths. They are more environmentally friendly and energy-efficient these days, with ablution tanks, and solar power, LED lighting, satellite TV, mobile phone and internet connectivity, making for a luxurious, safe and hassle free experience on the water. Over the summer season, on any one weekend up to 40,000 visitors come to our region, and the population of holiday makers on and around the lake can rise to over 2,500, virtually making it a “floating village”. With the number of houseboat licences capped at 770, there are two private marinas with permanent moorings on the water, at Eildon Boat Club and Darlingford Waters
Boat Club. Houseboats of varying capacities and accommodation options are available for hire all year round from the two marinas with public access from both road and water at Eildon Boat Harbour and Jerusalem Creek. The ability to have a change of scenery by moving to a new location, to calmer waters or to tie up in one of hundreds of inlets and quiet coves for a shore-side barbecue are some of the attractions of a houseboat holiday. Houseboating and watersports go hand-in-hand and fantastic family fun can be had using a houseboat as a base for swimming and fishing, or for the more adventurous, wake-boarding or jet-skiing, and I’ve even seen them tied up together for parties. Sure beats the old ex-army tent and canvas stretcher back in the day!

Patty pig’s pilgrimage . . .
Kabelo holding Patty the Pig while Merelyn and David entertain some children in Lesotho, with music and singing.
Patty the Pig takes Carter and Carter on a life changing journey LAST year Merelyn and David Carter, the famed country and western music duo Carter & Carter, made the twenty-nine hour journey from Kinglake to Lesotho in Africa to meet Kabelo, their World Vision sponsored child. The Carters were accompanied by Warrick Morton and Patty the Pig, a papier mache piñata who was made for a children’s party 20 years earlier but was constructed too thick to smash open and reveal the surprises. Patty may have been a failure as a piñata, but she was a highly successful fundraiser and managed to garner just under $4,000 (which is enough to purchase around 76 pigs) for World Vision, on one of Carter and Carter’s “A Taste of Tamworth” tours through Victoria and New South Wales. This is the story of Merelyn and David Carter’s adventure in Africa. It was always going to be a journey of contrasts as we navigated our way to Africa and back.
Upon arriving in Maseru, the capital of Lesotho, we met our World Vision guides Liau and Mpiti and, with their contagious warmth and welcome in our hearts, we headed into the city. Liau and Mpiti answered what must have seemed like a thousand questions from us, with the patience and pride of ones who obviously love their country and their people. Our patient guides explained some of the main challenges facing the colourful people of Lesotho. The effects of the changing climate, which sees the rains coming later and decreasing the already short growing season, are a problem compounded by the absence of infrastructure leaving local farmers without access to much-needed irrigation. They explained to us that many families have no adult present. Children are looking after children and often the only meal they get each day is at school, and if they can’t get to school they go hungry.
The children have either lost their parents through HIV/Aids or they have gone to work in South Africa leaving the children behind. Another challenge is the far-reaching and unpredictable effects of flooding and snow on the communities, who are reluctant to relocate; their culture and religion tie them to the homes of their ancestors and even those who are relocated to safer areas are often pulled back. We absorbed all of this as we meandered through the ramshackle outer streets of Maseru, thinking we were developing at least the beginning of an understanding, then we arrived at our picturesque and comparatively opulent accommodation. We were struck by the contrasts; Maseru wasn’t what we expected. We headed for the local shopping mall for lunch. On our way we passed makeshift stalls made from sticks covered in tatty plastic or sheets of Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2014/2015 – 51

There were people everywhere in their Sunday best enjoying the smells, colours and sounds. Laughter and dancing permeated the chaotic scene – they may not have much, but they seemed happy. We weren’t sure what to expect at the mall. The outside was a plain building with various advertising signs, a little drab, but there were cars and people everywhere. What we saw when we got inside shocked us: it was like walking into any local shopping mall in Australia. We were taken on a tour around the city, asked many more questions, then it was off to bed to get ready for our big adventure the next day; meeting Kabelo. We drove along goat tracks on the way to Kabelo’s school. We watched carefully as we passed the homes of the country’s poorest – some looked okay (again what did we expect?) Others were obviously only just holding together. The school visit was amazing. We were formally welcomed by the vivacious and constantly laughing headmistress. “I am happy!” she told us in English. The children sang and danced for us and we taught them the Hokey Pokey. Awesome! The simple gift of three leather soccer balls and a pump brought shouts of jubilation, and pandemonium broke lose for a few minutes until the headmistress gently brought the children back to order. Unknown to us, a soccer ball was top of the wish list, as children in Lesotho now have an opportunity to work towards playing professional soccer. Then it came time to meet Kabelo. We were all nervous. Merelyn already 52 – Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2014/2015
had tears of emotion at what we were witnessing. They named the child we had been supporting for five years out in front of the whole school. Poor little kid – he was overwhelmed. We said hello and then his siblings joined us and we headed off to spend the afternoon with them at their home, where we sang and danced and let the universal language of music bridge any communication gaps we had. Exhilarating, emotional, exhausting! The next day we visited some of the success stories that World Vision assistance has facilitated in the communities of Lesotho. One beautiful lady we met is now known as ‘a huge success story’. Three years ago, she was granted a pair of pigs of a larger and more meaty variety than those usually farmed in the country. Education taught her that she had choices in breeds and could increase her yields, simply by choosing the most appropriate breed. Now she has sixteen pigs, four sheep and recently acquired a few chickens. She has been educated on how to breed the animals to their fullest potential, and has started a support group in her area for the local farmers to share her knowledge.
women about HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment. Everywhere we went we sang, which was the ultimate ‘ice breaker’. They are extremely musical people and love their gospel music which worked for us – we sing gospel too. We saw ‘keyhole gardens’ where recycled water is channelled into raised garden beds, and we saw how they are learning to preserve their food at harvest without the use of electricity.
We journeyed further along the goat track to visit with some corn farmers. Their traditional ways of farming were no longer working, so World Vision has assisted in them receiving education in conservation agriculture that teaches them more effective methods.
We journeyed home, less than a week later, exhausted yet thrilled to have had this opportunity to see such great things in action. Yes we saw the challenges, yes we felt a glimpse of the heartache, but mostly we came away feeling that we had been uplifted and encouraged that each and every one of us here in Australia can make a difference in the world.
We visited the local maternal health clinic supported by World Vision. This clinic is involved in the education and care of pregnant mothers and their children, up to the age of five and is playing an important role in educating
Carter & Carter thank all who have contributed to Patty the Pig so far and World Vision for this wonderful opportunity. You can find out more about World Vision at www.worldvision. com.au.

Ski Trails Loop
LAKE Mountain’s winter wonderland appeal has been enticing tens of thousands of visitors annually for almost 100 years. Recently it has become an all year round playground, offering flying fox, tube run and laser skirmish, and has this year introduced a new walking trail for summer fun.
A leisurely 4 kilometre walk along the ski trails, about 1.5 hours return to the village. The walk winds its way through the snow gum woodland so walkers are able to see the recovery process of the snow gums after the 2009 bushfires. With information about the different and remarkable ways in which the eucalyptus responds to fire, the walk is informative as well as beautiful.
Lake Mountain Resort now has three different trails – Ski Trails Loop, Summit Loop and Bjarne K Dahl Memorial Walk. Visitors can take in landscapes of snow gums and alpine heath, plus panoramic views of the Victorian Alps across The Great Dividing Range to Melbourne from the Yarra Ranges National Park.
Once the trail reaches the top of the hill, walkers are able to look out across the headwaters of the Taggerty River and the Echo Flat heath land and moss beds. plants return and the land recovers from the devastation of the bushfires. Summit Loop Walking Track The five kilometre track begins with a steep 200 metre rise before levelling to a gentle incline to the summit. The trail is predominately snow gum woodland, but is also abundant in alpine ash and mountain hickory wattle. Walkers will see on this track too, the severe impact left by the 2009 fires as well as the strong recovery that has now become a battle for survival as the seedlings turn to trees and begin to compete for nutrients and light. The walk offers spectacular views from the Marysville lookout and the Alps lookout and passes over several
granite rock faces before reaching the junction with the Snowy Hill track. The walk provides picturesque scenery as it continues to the Taggerty Valley view. Bjarne K Dahl Memorial Walk Opened in March this year, this short, wheel chair accessible boardwalk at Snowy Hill allows visitors to learn about the history of fire and its environmental impacts, as well as the ski history of Lake Mountain. “The new boardwalk at Lake Mountain is a wonderful place to appreciate our much loved gum trees in a sub-alpine setting. Its construction is a testimony to community strength following the 2009 bush fires,” Scott Gamble, Resort Manager, Lake Mountain Resort said.

Wake up . . .
Wakeboard titles on Lake Eildon WAKEBOARD Victoria’s state titles will be held on 28th February, 2015 at Eildon Pondage and with some of
the best riders in Victoria competing, there’s sure to be some awesome tricks, massive air, huge stacks and
lots of entertainment! Wakeboard Victoria was born about 20 years ago and began with a bunch of riders just wanting to get together to compete against each other on an informal basis. As it evolved more and more riders joined in on the fun and today it is one of the leading grassroots wakeboarding organisations in Australia which has produced some great riders on the international scene such as Chris O’Shea and Brenton Priestly. Keeping an eye on the horizon, with current riders like Chloe Mills, Lachy Sim, Sam Rennie and Sam Singleton, the future is very bright for Victorian wakeboarding. They are affiliated with the national body, Wakeboard Australia, and also with the AWWF
who provide insurance for all riders nationally. Each state in Australia now has its own competition forum and once a year we all get together to hold the Wakeboard Nationals at various locations around the country. Wakeboard Victoria has riders of all ages and ability levels and caters for these with various divisions from novice (for our very young riders) up to ‘open pro’ division where the most experienced riders can compete and show off their skills. We love seeing the young riders developing a passion for the sport and improving their abilities over the course of the season and encourage anyone who loves wakeboarding to join us. If you’re in the area, why not come down and take a look!

Eildon fishing report By Gaz from Eildon Bait and Tackle THE Goulburn Fishing Festival and the Big Fish Competition have come and gone, with great excitement and success had by all. With recent trout stockings in the pondage, good numbers and sizes of both rainbow and brown trout have been taken. Irrigation, environmental and power requirements all play a big part in how to fish the pondage, so it pays to have a few tricks up your sleeve.

First rule of thumb, if you see fish rising try floating your bait. If they’re not rising they’ll be feeding lower down so use a sinker to weight your bait to the bottom. You also need to remember the majority of trout in the pondage are hatchery fish and used to being fed artificially, so baits such as power bait and local dough do really well, and for some reason the best lures to use soon after the fish are released
are the pink Tassie devil type lures or the ever reliable gold Kroc. Over the next few months, with the weather starting to warm up, mud eyes and worms start working as well. The experienced fly fishermen will start taking note of weather conditions and the different hatches of
