When Michelle Mussett was broke and desperately struggling to support her three young children, home ownership seemed an impossibility. But with a ‘hand up’ from Habitat for Humanity Victoria, her family now has their own beautiful home in Yea Heights Estate.
By Emily Friedel
I
magine being months behind on your rent with three young children to care for. Imagine the constant worry of how you are going to feed and clothe your family with ever-growing debt looming over you. Imagine living in unhealthy conditions that compound the distress, but knowing you can’t afford anything better. This is the situation Michelle Mussett found herself in after separating from her husband. “You sit in the lounge room when the kids are in bed and cry. And then when they wake up, you just be brave, but you’re like an elastic band stretching the whole time thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, when is it going to end?’” she says.
Michelle tells her story sitting in the cosy lounge room of her four-bedroom home in the Yea Heights Estate – a far cry from where she was almost a decade ago when money worries consumed her thoughts – all thanks to Habitat for Humanity Victoria. Habitat for Humanity Victoria is just one of the many branches of Habitat for Humanity International, which is a not-for-profit organisation working with local communities in 70 countries to provide housing and improved shelter for low-income families. “Habitat’s cause is to create a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Now the starting point for that is, we believe – and it’s actually in the universal declaration of human rights – that access to
affordable and appropriate housing is a basic human right,” says Habitat for Humanity Victoria CEO, Philip Curtis. “We have a large section of our community which doesn’t have access to affordable and appropriate housing. In Victoria, we have 24,000 people who are going to be homeless tonight, they were last night, and they will be tomorrow night. We have another 30,000-plus people who are on waiting lists for government housing, and some of them have been on that list for over a decade.” Habitat for Humanity houses are built mostly by volunteers, including house recipients, and sold to families in need with interest-free finance. Philip believes this approach to helping those in housing
stress has effects far beyond just getting a (decent) roof over their heads. “Now we could just give the houses away, but I don’t think that would have the same impact on the families because, in the end, this program is not about the house, it’s about the family and helping them on what I sometimes refer to as a pathway out of poverty,” he says. “So what we’re saying to our partner families is we want to work with you to help you out of your current situation and into something better so that you’ve got stability and strength and you can build independence and selfreliance over time.” To provide this opportunity for housing security to fireaffected people after the 2009 bushfires, Habitat for Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2019/20 – 7
Above: Volunteers are the ‘heart of Habitat for Humanity’, providing much of the labour that goes into building the houses. Rod Brooks (pictured) is the man who coordinates all these helping hands for Habitat for Humanity Victoria. Below: One of the houses that was recently handed over by Habitat for Humanity Victoria. To date, Habitat for Humanity has built over 60 houses in Victoria and built or restored over 800,000 houses worldwide making it the largest not-for-profit builder in the world. Photos courtesy Habitat for Humanity Victoria. Humanity Victoria embarked on its most ambitious project to date: the 21-house Yea Heights Estate. “It’s different to what we’ve done in the past. In the past, our housing has been a bit more salt and pepper around the community, we’ve tended to build two, three or four lot subdivisions. So
one of the initial concerns [from the community] was that we were going to build a slum for a whole lot of poor people who were just going to continue to struggle,” Philip says. “Now I think that if you visit Prospect Rise in Yea, you’ll see that that’s not the case. We’ve got families that
probably just needed a little bit of help to take the next step, and we’ve seen them move from surviving to thriving. We’ve seen families really blossom and start to achieve the potential that maybe got lost or hidden due to the pressure of trying to survive.” Michelle’s family could well
be described as one of those that are blossoming. For them, a house in Yea Heights was the solution to their predicament, but it is not something Michelle ever imagined she’d need. Brought up in a middle-class household, it never crossed her mind that housing stress was lurking in her future.
Single father Daniel went from living in his car to a brand new Habitat for Humanity home. A year after moving in, he secured fulltime, permanent employment for the first time in his life. CEO Philip Curtis says that if you help people solve their housing problem, they are then able to tackle other issues in their lives. Photo courtesy Habitat for Humanity Victoria. “It can happen to anyone. My parents always tried really, really hard to give us what we needed, and we never went without at all, and then you land yourself in a situation where you go how on Earth did I get here? It doesn’t just happen overnight, but it still happened pretty quickly,” she says. Philip says the people Habitat for Humanity Victoria assists wind up in housing stress for a range of reasons, but whatever the reasons, a lack of suitable housing seriously impacts quality of life for them. “Why are they in that situation? Sometimes it’s just one poor choice that’s driven a lot of other things, or it’s a failed relationship, or it’s domestic violence, and they’ve had to flee to get to somewhere safe, it’s a whole variety of things, but not having an affordable and appropriate place to call
home just drives a whole lot of other challenges that make it difficult to live and put you in a situation where life becomes about a struggle to survive.” In Michelle’s case, an affordable house was what she needed to get back on her feet, gradually chip away at her debts and give her kids what they needed – it was the key to getting her life back on track. “It’s been a relief; it’s taken all that stress off. So it’s a hand up, not a handout, but it’s still a gift in many different ways; you don’t have all the worries that you did have. You now have somewhere that you can live; it’s safe, and it’s affordable.” This pattern of housing stress relief leading to a raft of other positive changes in families is one Philip says he witnesses often. “Over time, what we see is improved outcomes in
the areas of education, employment, health and lifestyle for children and parents,” he says. “We have another partner family, a single dad, and he moved into his house about this time last year. Now when we first met him, he was living in his car most of the time, and his two children were living with his mother in the two-bedroom bungalow behind his sister’s house. I got a report this week that for the first time in his life, he’s got a fulltime, permanent job. I think that just the confidence of having some stability around where to live has just changed so many things for him.” There are currently 15 Habitat for Humanity houses in the Yea Heights Estate, each providing “simple, safe, decent and affordable” shelter for people who, like Michelle, somehow found themselves in dire straits at one point and may not have
been able to find their way out on their own. “We’re all really different people. We’ve all had our own struggles, we’re different age groups with different aged children, but there’s always going to be that Habitat connection – we’re all here for a reason,” Michelle says. Habitat for Humanity Victoria plans to complete the Yea Heights Estate by mid-2020 and give six more families a chance to enjoy the things in life that many of us take for granted. “I hope, and I’m fairly confident that it will provide each of our partner families with a really strong foundation on which they can build a future. I hope that over time, Prospect Rise in Yea just becomes another street in town,” Philip says. A testament to its owner’s determination and handiness, most of The Lodge was constructed by Geoff himself. By Emily Friedel
W
hen Geoff Boulter bought a 67-acre bush block in Taylor Bay in 2005, he never intended it to be a business. He planned to create a haven for his retirement years when he wrapped up his career as a safety advisor in the gas and oil industry. Geoff was out in Merrijig one day looking at prospective retirement properties but found the prices out of his budget. On the way home, he popped into Eildon – a place full of fond memories from his youth – to see what was available. “I used to go to Bonnie Doon when I was a teenager. When we got our licences, a couple of my mates got boats, and we’d always go to Bonnie Doon to waterski. Those were the days when you could actually touch the bridge going under it. Some of the time the water was so high you couldn’t get under the bridge,” he says. After seeing some properties that weren’t up to snuff, the estate agent took Geoff to one that probably didn’t
fit his criteria, but thought he might as well check out while he was in the area.
of research and found there’s a need for boat storage units,” he says.
“We drove in the little dirt track, there was the shed up there, and the three carports were down the bottom, and when you came up the very top of the hill, you could see the lake. I thought that if you faced the house straight out towards the lake, it had potential.”
“So I decided to do the storage units, but also do accommodation as a side thing, so that people store their boat here, and if they want to stay overnight, they can.”
So he got the property, and he got to work. He lived in the shed while building the house in between working on offshore rigs. “It took three and a half years; a lot of that time I was still working overseas, so I’d go away for a month, come back and work on the house for a month, then go back to work to have a rest.” Then, when oil prices took a steep dive four years ago and affected his livelihood, Geoff’s plans for the property went out the window. “When the goalposts change, you’ve got to change with them. I was left thinking one day prices will get back up, but what am I going to do in the meantime? That’s when I came up with the idea of turning this into a business. I did a bit
When choosing a name for his new business, Geoff went with the name his son gave it many years before. “My son Graig gave me a timber plaque that’s got Taylor Bay Country Club as a Christmas present. I put it away, and it wasn’t until I considered starting a business that I thought, ‘Do I rename it or do I just stick it up?’ In the end, I said it’s already got a name, let’s just use that. So the Taylor Bay Country Club was born in about 2007 or 2008, but I never imagined it was going to be something like this.” As with the main house, now known as The Lodge, when it was time for construction to begin on the storage units and cabins, Geoff did as much of the work as possible himself, and he has been steadily chipping away at his goals for the last four years. Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2019/20 – 13
Right: The sign gifted to Geoff by his son many years before the property became a business. Below: Inside Dingo’s Den, one of the self-contained cabins at Taylor Bay Country Club. “When people ask me what I do in my spare time, I say I don’t have spare time – I work on the property, I enjoy it.” Geoff says nine years in the
navy followed by 16 in the Metropolitan Fire Brigade played a significant role in shaping his ‘can-do’ attitude and his ability to focus on the tasks he sets himself.
“Joining the navy at 17 was a bit of a shock for me, but it did teach me a lot about discipline, about what’s right and what’s not. So nine years of that, and I’d had enough,
but it sort of followed me into the fire brigade, which is a very regimented sort of job as well.” Now with The Lodge, 70 storage units, two completed cabins and another on the way, a dam stocked with yabbies and fish, and the original shed converted into a fitness centre, Geoff shows no signs of slowing down. He is preparing for another 30 storage units, a motorbike track, an infinity pool, and a hunter’s cabin. “It’s an ongoing project,” he says. And perhaps one day, he will down tools and finally enjoy the view of Lake Eildon from his deck as a retiree just as he’d initially planned. fine building graces Marysville’s Pack Road. The exterior has large, timber-framed windows, a wide verandah, stone walls, an outdoor deck overlooking the Steavenson River and lawns, a landscaped garden and car parking area. Inside is a welcoming entry and meeting room with a large boardroom table and a pool table, a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom with disabled facilities and a large workshop area with specialist woodworking equipment. This is the Marysville and Triangle Community Men’s Shed where, more than likely, you will find women as well as men creating anything from utilitarian items to beautiful timber works of art, items for their homes, commissions and community projects. When the women saw the
completed facility, they were itching to work there too. Director of Marysville’s Little Fishes Gallery and immediate past president of the men’s shed, Bob McNamara, says that the idea to accept female members was proposed at the Annual General Meeting and accepted about three years ago. “I think the men quite like it.” On Wednesday mornings it’s men only, women and men on Wednesday afternoons and Thursdays, and any other times. Having a kitchen and a large gas barbecue means that members can cook lunch and continue their projects throughout the day. At the monthly dinners, socialising continues around what was once JL Gould Sawmill’s huge board table. Individual members take turns at preparing a meal of their choice, the shed funds the ingredients and partners are welcome.
Once a month, this is where you will find members of the Marysville RSL subbranch meeting, and once a year crowds are invited to morning tea here after the Anzac Day ceremonies. Presently the shed has about 35 financial members, about one third being women. Bob McNamara says the women seem to be more active and have encouraged activity amongst all the members. The men are always helpful and respectful. According to Bob, “All members must complete a workshop skills and safety course, and new members work with skilled and experienced members. In time, these skilled members will likely be the women.” A more recent shed member is former Marysville Lolly Shop lady and now committee member, Julia Harris. In describing her experiences, Julia says, “I was using the jigsaw for
the first time. Everyone was watching, and I got stage fright! Having member Noel McGregor as a mentor has been fabulous.” Retired real estate agent and shed secretary is Grant Stinear. Grant says, “Many of the shed members, including the men, have had to learn new skills. Some very strong friendships have been made and maintained, and fellowship and support are there for members who are going through tough times. “ “We have members with diverse skills and backgrounds. We have fun, and if we mention a problem, someone will have the answer. One of the best things is that the shed has helped rekindle old skills. Some of the members are making things for their own houses. One of our ladies, Glenys Ross, has developed new skills and her works are more free range,” adds Bob McNamara. was established to get the show on the road.
Glenys, who runs Marysville’s Fernbrook Cottage B&B, has made beautiful gifts and has work in Marysville’s MiRA artspace. “Woodwork is something that I had always wanted to do. We began with an excellent safety course for using all the equipment. The blokes have been great, and I’d like to have more time to use the shed,” she says. mental health and help tackle isolation, especially in rural environments. Following the fires of 2009, there was a very urgent need to provide a venue for men in the Triangle area (Taggerty, Buxton, Narbethong,
Granton and Marysville) to talk and restore. There was a long road ahead and for their much-needed shed – they had to chase money via a series of funding bodies, find an appropriate site, obtain the appropriate planning approvals, select an architect and a builder and do the hard work. A working party
As an interim measure, a temporary meeting place and storage was provided in Dickinson’s shed on the Buxton-Marysville Road. There the men held regular dinner meetings, discussed plans, received progress updates and watched as donated equipment and exotic timbers salvaged after the fires began to flow in. “The late Mark Lewis was one of the driving forces for the shed. At the time, he was working with Berry Street and assisted with our funding applications. Our first president and chairman of the initial working group
Shed members Bob McNamara and Julia Harris amidst some of the shed’s latest projects. was Marysville’s Richard Holland,” Bob says. At that time, Richard described the early days as “a protracted funding merry-go-round.” But finally funding came good through a variety of sources including the Department of Planning and Community Development, Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority, Mitchell Health, the Murrindindi Shire with tremendous support from the late Mark Lewis representing Berry Street. The finished product is also the result of huge volunteer input. Thanks to the skills, dedication and equipment of the local community, much of the site preparation, project management, and finishing off were done on
a voluntary basis. Finishing off included electrical wiring, painting, floor sealing, tiling, grouting the stonework and building access ramps. The shed was officially opened in May 2013 by the Governor of Victoria, Alex Chernov. Prior to being destroyed in the fires, the building on the Pack Road site was home to the Marysville RSL and the treasures of the Marysville History Centre. While the RSL can continue in a new home at its old address, the history centre now houses a magnificent collection in a large home and display shed on Darwin Street. Maintaining and operating a men’s shed costs money – there’s the insurance,
water and electricity bills, equipment maintenance and upgrading, replacement parts for equipment, tools and consumables. There is no ongoing outside funding so the shed must be financially self-sustaining. Income is derived from memberships, community projects, commissions and fund-raising events such as a trivia night. The shed presently has commissions to make bench seating for Marysville’s St John’s Anglican Church’s labyrinth project, cow sculptures for Narbethong’s Saladin Lodge, rustic tables for Marysville’s Jazz and Blues Weekend, where members will also man the bar and also points along the Marysville Marathon. More
projects are certain to follow. The Marysville Triangle Community Men’s shed welcomes new members, and Julia is hoping that more women will join in to learn and create garden decorations, possum and bird houses, garden signs and other items to be sold at the Marysville market. In a men’s shed, there is no pressure. Members can just come in and have a yarn and a cuppa or a game of pool if that’s what they are looking for. In accepting his nomination as the shed’s new president, Bruce Dayble says, “The shed is what we make it. It is a place where we can get together to work and find fellowship. “ Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2019/20 – 19

A
recent study by Parks Victoria found that people are well aware of the physical and mental health benefits of spending time in nature, but many of us aren’t reaping these benefits as much as we’d like to – or should. Of the thousand Victorians surveyed, 96% think spending time in parks can help improve physical health, and 93% think it can help improve mental health. Despite this understanding of nature’s positive effects on wellbeing, 64% of respondents do most of their exercise indoors, and 75% said they would like to exercise outdoors more often. So what’s stopping people from getting outside? According to the survey, the number one issue (cited
22 – Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2019/20
by 65% of respondents) is a perceived lack of time. Other barriers to spending time in nature identified by the survey included safety concerns and accessibility features. Parks Victoria’s Health and Community Activation Manager, Shauna Jones, suggests there are simple strategies to overcome some of these barriers, while Parks Victoria is actively working on breaking down others. “To combat the barriers and realise the benefits of nature, plan your day to include time outdoors. Hopping off the train one stop earlier or walking to the park during your lunch break can help overcome those time constraints.” Combining activities in parks with socialising may reduce some of the perceived time obstacles – no need to carve
out a separate timeslot for a café trip – while making exercise feel more enjoyable and safer. “It’s more fun and more likely to be motivating for people to go with other people,” Shauna says. “Women in our survey also reported feeling safer when they join in our walks that we lead with volunteers or with the Rangers.” For people who already exercise multiple times a week (49% of survey respondents), taking some of that exercise out into green spaces can enhance its benefits. “The mental health benefits of spending time in nature are being validated over and over again in terms of managing levels of stress hormones like cortisol, which has been shown to reduce demonstrably within the first
15 or 20 minutes of being in a natural environment,” Shauna says. And for those who already have an exercise routine, outdoor exercise also provides an opportunity to develop other aspects of their physical fitness. “Even though you’re fit on one level, the outdoor experience can challenge you differently. Maybe your pathways aren’t as predictable, and you have to have a bit different level of strength or endurance to manage the outdoor environment.” For those who do very little exercise (51% of survey respondents exercise once a week or less), parks offer a free and non-threatening means of developing fitness and experiencing success. “I think that [going for a walk in the park] might be that
kind of entry-level activity that helps to start build their self-confidence and their sense of self-efficacy so that once they get over the hurdle, they can go to the next level, and it continues to build their belief in themselves that they are capable of doing it.” To empower people with more knowledge to find a park that suits their needs and caters for any mobility limitations they have – from pushing prams to requiring wheelchair access – Parks Victoria recently launched their new website. “We’ve done a huge amount of work to improve the type of information about the
accessibility of parks, and to give that information by park. We have worked on identifying things like where the accessible toilets are and what the camping opportunities are. We grade all of our tracks and trails, too, so people can determine whether they are suitable for a beginner walker or an intermediate – there is something for everyone,” Shauna says. “We are also starting to install, in some of our parks, barbeques that allow different cultural groups to cook in a way that is consistent with cultural belief systems whether it’s halal or kosher, so our new site identifies where some of
those features are by park, which is great.” While some people may want to spend more time in nature specifically for their wellbeing, Shauna says that regardless of your intention for visiting a park, you’ll get health benefits from being there. “We know that about 75-80% of what people come into parks to do is go for a walk; whether they call it hiking or bushwalking or meandering, they’re walking, they’re engaged in physical activity.” “And in terms of parks, I would say that being in nature sharpens your senses differently as well because
you have quite a different set of inputs, whether it’s silence alone or whether it’s birdlife or just fresher air. I do think quite a lot of those things can be subtler benefits. Even if it’s not your motivation for going into a park to receive all those benefits, you receive them anyway, which is quite interesting.” So whether you consider yourself the healthconscious sort or not, why not get out into a park this summer? You’ll no doubt feel better for it. For more information go to https://parkweb.vic.gov.au or to find a walking group near you go to http://park-walks. eventbrite.com

T
here is something really special that happens when a community comes together to support its children and each other. Over the past five years, the children of the six schools across the Kinglake Ranges, together with David and Merelyn Carter (Carter & Carter), have collectively written 27 songs , 12 of which have been recorded on the album Country Kids – Sing Out Loud, plus a rousing finale of ‘I Am Australian’. The children recorded their vocals to the professional band tracks produced by David and Merelyn, working with ‘A-team’ musicians Gavin Pearce, Hayden Meggitt and Brett Wood, and engineered by Phil Lawson. The lead vocals were recorded at Cheeky Fox Retreat in Kinglake in the purpose-built studio area – a wonderful legacy from the original owners, Thomas and Tessa Libreri, and the current owners Jason and Linda are hugely supportive of the project. Many thanks for their great hospitality. David, Merelyn and Phil went to each of the schools to record the beautiful voices of all the students together to complete the tracks – a big thank you
to the teachers for helping make this happen. Four large blank canvases, together with paints and brushes were presented to each school, and the artwork project
was launched in tandem with the album recording. The children’s expressive art has been used on the CD booklet and also as a display at the launch concert, which was held in the Kinglake Ranges Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2019/20 – 25

A
s the weather warms up, and we’re enjoying the outdoors more, so are the many snakes that inhabit the Murrindindi Shire. While a close encounter with one of these native reptiles may get the heart racing, there is plenty you can do to stay safe and avoid being one of the few thousand Australians that get bitten by a snake each year. Melbourne Zoo Ectotherms Keeper, Alex Mitchell, who has been working with reptiles in zoos for the past 15 years has some practical answers to questions about getting along with our native snakes. What are some of the common myths about our native snakes in Victoria? Myth: Snakes will chase you Typically snakes will actively avoid people, and given the opportunity will move away from humans. Snakes have a similar flight response to that of a scared person and will try and pick the quickest escape route. However, sometimes that escape route may be the same for the human and the snake, which could be one of the contributing factors to this myth. Myth: All snakes lay eggs A number of snakes found throughout the world actually give
30 – Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2019/20
birth to fully developed live-born young. In Victoria, snake species such as tiger snakes and copperheads are examples of this. What should you do if you see a snake? Australia has quite a large number of highly venomous snake species, so as a general rule, it is best to assume that any wild snake that you encounter is a potentially dangerous species and treat all snakes in the same manner. It can be difficult for the untrained eye to identify venomous snakes from nonvenomous species such as pythons. If you encounter a snake, it is best to give the animal a wide berth of at least several metres. It is relatively safe to observe the snake from this distance. However, if you encounter a snake quite close to you (such as right by your feet), standing still and waiting for the snake to move away is often the best course of action. Snakes are reluctant to bite humans unless they are provoked. If you have snakes living nearby, what are the best options for keeping your family and pets safe? Discouraging snakes from living around your house, or moving throughout your property can be achieved by:
• Taking measures to limit the number of food sources for snakes around your house or property – particularly rats and mice. By keeping your residence rodent-free, snakes will have less of a reason to be there. • Keeping the surroundings of your house and backyard tidy and well maintained. Remove any potential shelters for snakes, such as log or rock piles, sheets of tin on the ground, etc. • Make sure your grass is cut low, remove fallen branches and prune large bushes. Snakes feel quite exposed when moving across large areas of open ground and will often avoid these areas. • Bird aviaries and chicken pens can be quite attractive to snakes. Keep these well maintained, secure, and free of rodents. A fine wire mesh around the lower perimeter may discourage snakes from entering. If you encounter a snake in your backyard or house, there are also a number of licenced snake removalist experts who can be contacted to help safely shift this animal for you. What are the most common causes of snakebites in Australia? Snakebites and fatalities in Australia are fairly uncommon compared to other countries throughout the world. On average, approximately 3,000 people are admitted to Australian hospitals per year for a snakebite. A number of these patients may have been bitten by non-venomous species. However, on average, two of these 3,000 bites are fatal.
Above: Alex Mitchell has been working with reptiles in zoos for the past 15 years, so he knows a thing or two about our native snakes. Photo courtesy Zoos Victoria.
Below: Eastern brown snakes (Pseudonaja textilis) are one of the most common snakes in North East Victoria and, according to the Australian Snakebite Project, is the species you’re most likely to get bitten by. Photo Shutterstock.
The lowland copperhead (Austrelaps superbus) inhabits grasslands, heathlands, woodlands and open scrub, preferring to live near bodies of water where it can hunt for frogs, lizards and other snakes. Photo Shutterstock. A high percentage of snake bites occur in Australia each year when people attempt to catch, handle or kill wild snakes. The probability of getting bitten by a snake significantly decreases if you avoid these actions. It’s also important to remember that snakes are a protected species in Australia. For children, it is especially important to educate them about what actions to take when they come across a snake – such as not to approach, or touch a snake. Taking measures to proactively snake-proof your home as much as possible, as mentioned, can also minimise the likelihood of your child encountering a snake. What should you do if you get bitten by a snake? In Australia, the pressure or immobilisation method should be used immediately in the event of a confirmed or suspected snake bite. This method involves using a pressure bandage
to slow down the speed at which snake venom can move throughout the victim’s body until the victim reaches hospital for further treatment. All Australians should be aware of this important and potentially life-saving first aid. Do not apply a tourniquet, attempt to cut the bitten area, or try to suck the venom out of the wound. To avoid being bitten by a snake when bushwalking or enjoying the outdoors, always be aware of the placement of your feet. Wearing long, loose pants can also be a safety measure as typically the fangs of most Australian snakes are actually quite short and may have difficulty penetrating through loose-fitting material. For more information on snake safety: Check out the St John Ambulance Australia’s snakebite safety resource on their website: https://stjohn.org.au/assets/uploads/ fact%20sheets/english/FS_snakebite.pdf

ougher than old boots, giant saltbush (Atriplex nummularia) stands stoic in many of Australia’s semi-arid and arid regions. Able to withstand the harshest of conditions – from drought to saline soils – it’s prized as a fodder crop and a regenerative landscaping tool. It’s also valued by gardeners for its attractive silvery foliage and bushy growth habit, which lends itself to hedging and screening. What most people don’t know about giant saltbush is
that it’s not only edible, but it’s one of our tastiest and most versatile native herbs. With leaves high in protein and minerals, it’s also a nutritional addition to meals. And with celebrity chefs like Kylie Kwong touting its virtues in the kitchen, giant saltbush is as deserving of a spot in the herb garden as those low-maintenance Mediterranean mainstays like rosemary. Growing giant saltbush Giant saltbush (also known as old man saltbush or cabbage saltbush) is easy to grow from seed either sown
direct or in pots. Autumn, early winter and spring are the best times of year to sow giant saltbush, and soaking the seeds in water for at least an hour before sowing improves germination rates.
more attention, only growing well with regular watering and benefitting from frost protection during winter and some native fertiliser during the warmer months when actively growing.
While giant saltbush is a relatively quick grower, if you don’t want to wait for seeds to germinate, tube stock and larger potted plants aren’t too hard to come by.
Once established, however, giant saltbush can survive everything from 40-plus degree days in full sun to heavy frosts and needs very little care.
Saltbush tolerates a wide range of soil types, including clay-heavy and alkaline soils, but isn’t too keen on acidic conditions or waterlogging. Young plants need a bit
Giant saltbush grows up to three metres tall and five metres wide, but is happy to be pruned to keep it compact (which also means plenty available for pepping up mealtime). Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2019/20 – 39
Cooking with giant saltbush Saltbush leaves have a slightly salty, tangy flavour and fleshy texture. Fresh leaves are great for adding zest to salads or making a bed for roasting meat or fish, while dried leaves are used for seasoning or (when ground) a salt substitute. They are also terrific tossed into stirfries, or stir-fried on their own to make a delectable side dish that complements a wide range of meals.
Ingredients • • • • • • •
3 tbsp peanut oil 200g fresh saltbush leaves 20g ginger, julienned 3 cloves garlic, thinly sliced 1 red chilli, thinly sliced 1 ½ tbsp soy sauce 3 tbsp vegetable stock
Method 1. Heat peanut oil in a wok until shimmering. 2. Add saltbush leaves, ginger, garlic cloves and chilli. 3. Stir-fry until wilted and fragrant (2-3 minutes). 4. Add soy sauce and stock, stir-fry until hot (1 minute). 5. Serve and enjoy!

uring a time of great change in Australia’s community services sector, Menzies Support Services is continuing its mission to provide services and opportunities to people requiring supports in the Murrindindi and Mansfield regions. The organisation’s vision is to support people to achieve their goals and aspirations as valued and respected members of the community. Clients participate in group programs, receive individualised support at home and in the community, and are supported to take part in employment,
education, social and recreation activities. Dame Pattie Menzies Centre, a property on the Goulburn Valley Highway at Alexandra, was established as a direct result of an enormous community lobbying and fundraising campaign. Dame Pattie Menzies became the patron of Dame Pattie Menzies Centre in 1978. In 1979 a property known as ‘The Mount’ was purchased by the local community with funds raised locally and matched by the federal government. For many years all services were based at the centre, but with the growing need for services with the rollout
of the NDIS in the Goulburn Region, the organisation began preparations to expand. The Menzies Support Services administration team is now based at 49 Nihil Street Alexandra. The new site is the central hub for general enquiries, requests for support services, training, meetings, plan management and support coordination services. Following the move to the office, a client receptionist program was introduced, providing participants an opportunity to be part of the administration team. Client receptionists answer phones, greet visitors, assist with the
mail run, and a variety of general duties around the office. The program aims to support the development of communication and clerical work skills. The relocation of administration functions to our Nihil Street site has created more space at The Mount. Two rooms, formerly used as offices, are now available to service users. Group programs continue at The Mount and in the wider community setting. Programs include opportunities to undertake vocational training. Menzies Support Services, in conjunction with GoTafe, hosted the Certificate II in Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2019/20 – 43

is very much a part of the community. Clients present regular sessions at radio UGFM, participate in All Abilities sports days across the area, provide helpers at the Thornton Eildon Football Netball Club, host fundraisers including Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, and contribute to local culture and events.

well known to locals and has become a tourist attraction, with visitors often stopping to take photos. Participants are involved in all stages of the process from the initial idea to sourcing materials and assembling the final creation. Each year, a haybale instalment is displayed at the entrance to the Alexandra Spring Show.
While changes in the sector continue, Menzies Support Services is remaining focussed on their role in the community, providing services tailored to the individual’s goals and support needs. Any member of the community wishing to learn more about the organisation and services offered is invited to visit the Nihil Street office.

Louise with the ‘Arabuna Lands’ painting.

f ever anyone deserves the epithet ‘a born artist’ it would have to be Louise Foletta, a renowned watercolour painter who divides her time between Melbourne and the family farm at Buxton. From the age of two, Louise remembers being fascinated by colour, whether it was the flowers in the garden
or fabric samples brought home by her father from his textile mill. Later, at primary school, she became known as ‘the artist’ and started winning prizes for her work. Louise was so keen to bring vibrant colour into her artwork, she saved her pocket money to buy one special Derwent pencil at a time because the standard coloured pencils were too pallid.
In secondary school, she used every opportunity to take extra art classes and was fortunate to be encouraged by her art teachers. One of these, the celebrated artist Joan Gough, became a lifelong mentor and friend. Her grandfather, too, played a role, fostering the teenage Louise’s talent by giving her an art book for Christmas every year. “I remember, each year, just
soaking up the art book,” Louise says. Later, Louise consolidated her skills by studying painting at the Caulfield Institute of Technology and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. Soon after, she left Australia for an extended overseas trip, visiting famous galleries in South-East Asia, Europe and the USA as well as studying watercolour with Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2019/20 – 47

paintings, many by famous artists.
From this youthful passion, Louise has built a distinguished career spanning more than 50 years. Her prize-winning work has been included in exhibitions throughout Australia as well as in the USA, Taiwan, Singapore, China and Korea and can be found in the collections of corporations, universities, government departments, local councils, regional galleries and private schools.
The natural world, in particular the landscape, has always been the focus of Louise’s art. While her classmates at primary school were painting ballet dancers and horses, Louise was painting trees. This love of the natural world was fostered by frequent visits to her grandfather’s farm at Buxton where she would explore and draw.
Although Louise paints in a range of mediums, her first love is watercolour, originally inspired by viewing her grandfather’s collection of watercolour 48 – Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2019/20
Now, Louise travels all over Australia and even to the USA to find inspiring landscapes. She particularly favours deserts because they represent the landscape ‘laid bare’ to reveal its ancient origins. Deserts also reveal the
texture of the land, something Louise loves to capture in her work. But, for Louise, it is not simply a case of painting ‘pretty pictures’. She wants her work to tell a story. Currently, Louise is working on a painting from her 2017 trip to Arabuna lands. The Arabuna are the traditional owners of the land in the Lake Eyre Basin in far north South Australia. Louise explored this country with Aboriginal elder, Reg Dodd, and learned about the Dreamtime stories associated with the area. She has now incorporated those stories, quite literally, into her painting. Another story Louise has told in paintings is that of Black Saturday, the horrific bushfire that devastated so much of Victoria on 7 February 2009. For Louise, it is a very personal story as she and her two adult sons were in the thick of the fire on their Buxton farm fighting for their lives on that day. Fortunately the farm was saved but the fire had a profound impact on everyone. “Your whole world was changed, totally changed. You couldn’t believe it was real,” Louise says.
However, less than two weeks after the fire, Louise took up painting again, recording the scenes around her. At the time, specks of ash were still falling from the sky and can be found on the surface of one of her paintings. Louise has now produced an impressive body of work that acts as a important, visual record of this catastrophic event. While there is no doubt that painting helped Louise cope with the trauma of the fire, it wasn’t only Louise who benefited. When her Black Saturday paintings were exhibited in the local area they enabled others to open up and talk about their own experiences of the day. Louise found this very rewarding because, as she explains, “I have always wanted the works I do to have some meaning, to be important in some way. This, for me, is success.” As well as painting, Louise has been a tireless teacher and mentor of other aspiring artists offering classes at the Council of Adult Education, Summer Schools at her Buxton property, workshops throughout Victoria and
private lessons. And, as if that’s not enough, she has also been a driving force in numerous organisations that support the arts and artists including stints as president of the Contemporary Art Society of Victoria, Watercolour Society of Victoria and the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors. It is all part of Louise’s philosophy of sharing her talent with others. Despite her long and distinguished career, Louise is showing no sign of slowing up. Right now, she is busy producing paintings for a number of upcoming exhibitions, there are workshops in the pipeline and her Buxton studio will be open on long weekends throughout the year. With her love of art as strong today as it has been all her life, Louise is the embodiment of someone with a lifelong passion for art. rtist, cartoonist, illustrator, author and counsellor, Bev Aisbett, is best known for her self-help books in her unique cartoon format for sufferers of anxiety and depression – the most popular being Living With IT – now in its 24th year in print. Bev began her career as a cartoonist and illustrator in the major press with her strip Animal Revenge in the Sunday Herald magazine. This was followed by regular illustrations for Terry Lane’s column in the Sunday Age, cartoons in the Bulletin and Woman’s Day and strips in New Woman and New Weekly magazines at their inception, as well as illustrating numerous educational, health and corporate texts. In 1994, she founded and directed the HaHa Gallery of Comic Art at Gasworks Park, Albert Park, featuring works by Australian cartoonists. In 2003, after moving to the Murrindindi Guide – SUMMER 2019/20 – 51
western suburbs of Melbourne, she founded Salmay Gallery in Newport.
mural at Spicy Water Cafe, Newport.
Over the last 20 years, the focus of her creative work has largely centred on painting, with her images proving popular for their mythical, dream-like themes, whilst reflecting the inner journey of her work as a counsellor.
In March 2009, Bev held a major exhibition of Domestic Madonnas at Without Pier Gallery, Cheltenham and in August 2009 at Smart Artz Gallery, Sth Melbourne. Pieces from the Domestic Madonnas series is currently shown here.
Her painting Man and the Moon was exhibited at the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery in 2006 as part of The Serious Side of Cartoonists exhibition during the national Stanley Cartoon Awards events.
In November 2009, Bev exhibited at Tasmania Shop and Gallery, Hobart where she was invited to do a solo show, following interest in her ongoing stock room pieces at the gallery.
A solo exhibition was held in April 2007 at the Dancing Dog Café, Footscray, followed by a further solo exhibition at the Bagel Tree Café, Williamstown in 2008. Other works have since been displayed and sold at local cafes and businesses, including a commissioned
Bev’s solo show Life is just this Stage I’m Going Through at Louis Joel Arts Centre, Altona in June 2010 was also well received and she exhibited in Hobart again in November 2010 with Domestic Madonnas at the gallery’s request.

Bev released her autobiography All of It,
published by HarperCollins in June 2012 which also features one of her paintings The Long Sunday on the cover. All of It was nominated for the Stella Literary Award. Also in 2012, Bev’s painting Love Is a Thorny Crown was a finalist in the She Art Prize exhibition at Walker St Gallery, Dandenong In 2013, Bev opened Piece Gallery in Yarraville, exhibiting her own and other artist’s work, which unfortunately had to close its doors in 2016, after which Bev worked from her live-in art studio in Coburg North. Bev made a tree change and moved to Alexandra in January 2018 this year where she has continued with her writing and her love of painting. In January, she has been invited to present a major exhibition Heartfelt at Marian Rennie’s gallery in Acheron.

oncerts4Causes is staging a fundraising Christmas concert in the beautiful historical gardens at Rennies at Acheron on Saturday, 14 December starting at 4pm. The concert will be featuring singer/ songwriting duo, Soloman and Lacey with supporting artist, Tayla Arnett and cameo guest, Craig Lloyd. Hugh McSpeddin, (aka Humania), a Melbourne-based lighting and projection artist who has been involved with lighting for new music, dance, artists and festivals since 1968 will also be presenting a dazzling light show after dark. Concerts4Causes was established by Gary Soloman, Marian Rennie and Christine Challen. It functions as a collaborative event company which partners with community organisations to raise funds by staging music, art and wine events. This year’s Christmas concert at Rennies and the accompanying Sponsorship Program is designed to raise funds for Kellock Lodge in Alexandra. Gary Soloman has been performing
with bands and artists since he was a youngster in the mid seventies. He writes and records from his studio in Narbethong and plays guitar and sings solo and with his daughter, Tallulah, in venues throughout Australia. He teaches singing and instrument playing and has a passion to nurture and support young people through the gift of music. Supporting artist Tayla Arnett is a prodigious musical student destined for a bright future in the industry. She recently performed in the Sunday afternoon program at Grant Street Grocers in Alexandra. Craig Lloyd is also under Gary’s tutelage. He’s CEO of Murrindindi Shire by day with an alter ego as a very talented musician. His preferred music genre is country and western and he has just been accepted into the 2019 Tamworth Music Festival. Marian Rennie is an accomplished and renowned visual artist, having worked in film on set and costume design, as well as with furniture, ceramics and textiles, as a mural artist and as a painter on mixed media. Her gallery
at Acheron is surrounded by several acres of established gardens, originally planted by her mum on the family farm, bordered by the Goulburn River. Marian is also a restaurateur, lovingly creating unique dishes with hints of Morocco and the Middle East using local and fresh garden produce. Christine Challen in partnership with husband, Philip, is a vigneron and wine producer at Taggerty. Little River Wines was established more than 30 years ago and now crafts premium, low volume sparkling and red and white table wines. With an extensive working history which includes the arts and hospitality, she relishes the opportunity to promote local artists and artisans and develop the Concerts4Causes concept. Tickets for the concert are available at Eventbrite for $25.00. Picnic hampers can also be pre-booked and café-style food, as well as wine and beer, will be available for purchase for the duration of the show.
