Water for wildlife

Heatwaves and extremely hot days are becoming a fact of life in Australia’s summers. They’re something most of us don’t enjoy but can live with – we humans have plenty of options for cooling down when outside temperatures become uncomfortable or even dangerous. Our wildlife, on the other hand, has fewer options and high temperatures can be deadly, especially without easy access to water. So, this summer, when preparing your house and garden for the heat, why not add some water for wildlife? If you are going to leave some liquid refreshment for the critters that visit your property, there are a few things you can do to ensure they get the most out of it. First, use shallow dishes so that small creatures don’t drown, or place rocks and sticks in bowls of water so they can easily climb out. Second, put your water offerings in shady, sheltered places that are protected from curious pets so shy wildlife feel safe to make use of them.

And third, water dishes at different levels around the garden will allow land-dwellers as well as winged visitors to get a drink when they need it. If you’re lucky, you may even find that putting out water gives you the opportunity to observe more of our incredible native wildlife from the comfort of your own (air-conditioned) home.
