Heroes and villians . . .
CLANCY TUCKER, EILDON
The creative world of Clancy Tucker By Tammy Lovett
CLANCY TUCKER lives in a world brimming with heroes and villains, triumph and romance and a good dose of mystery and intrigue too. Unlike most, Clancy spends his days dreaming up characters and breathing life into the world he creates for them. The Eildon-based author has been writing fiction stories for young adults professionally for 17 years, though Clancy says his love of writing started long before that. “I’ve still got the first three stories I wrote when I was eight,” he said. Decades on, Clancy is now a self-published and awardwinning author, releasing his first novel, Gunnedah Hero in 2011. A prolific writer, with 22 manuscripts and more than 150 short stories to his name, Clancy draws much of his inspiration from life experience and says the key lies in perceiving reality. “It’s about being observant,” he said. “Some people see more on a walk around the block than others do on a trip around the world.”

one Clancy admits, though he believes working with street children and his childhood probably pointed him in that direction.
“It’s a powerful story,” he said.
In each of his stories, Clancy says it’s important to include a role model. He believes it encourages reluctant readers to pick up a book and gives young people somebody to look up to.
“There’s so much real life to write about.” The decision to write predominantly for young adults wasn’t a conscious
“Life is pretty tough as a kid,” he said. A character in his own right, Clancy is straight talking and bursting with passion and enthusiasm. Perhaps this is what makes him such a keen observer and successful teacher. For the past three years Clancy has taught a writing class to members of U3A,

Exhibitions at Rustic Simplicity, Alexandra Imagine. Sustain. Conserve. RUSTIC SIMPLICITY’S ‘Imagine. Sustain. Conserve.’ is a group exhibition of local and Victorian artists, broadly exploring the theme of World Environment Day, which in 2014 falls on Thursday 5th June. This year’s World Environment Day theme is ‘Think. Eat. Save.’ an anti-food waste campaign based on the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization’s figure that a third of global food production is either wasted or lost. The message is think before you eat and help save our environment! For this exhibition contributing artists are encouraged to think outside the square; and to consider other factors (as well as the theme) such as the aesthetics of the artwork entered. ‘Imagine. Sustain. Conserve.’ will open with drinks and nibbles from 6pm Friday 2nd May and runs until Monday 16th June.
an organisation that provides educational programs for older citizens. Two of his students have published their life stories and others are working on writing and illustrating children’s books. Clancy also keeps an online blog that has an audience in 46 countries. In his daily posts Clancy shares writing tips and features interviews with other writers and fascinating guests, including a prisoner on death row in America.

Next on the busy author’s agenda are a number of true crime stories. It wasn’t something Clancy planned, but he says the stories “landed in his lap” and are too good to pass up. For news, writing tips and information on Clancy Tucker visit: clancytucker.com.au or clancytucker. blogspot.com.au.

Exhibitions at Old Post Office Fine Art Gallery, Seymour THE 2014 August occasion at the Old Post Office Seymour Fine Art Gallery will feature a solo exhibition of Expressionist oil paintings by Agnes Szetey in the main gallery. The exhibition opening is on Sunday 3rd August from11am to 4pm with complimentary refreshments served all day. The show continues until 28th September. Opening hours for the gallery are Wednesday to Sunday 11am to 4pm and Wednesday to Saturday 6pm to 9pm or later. Agnes is of Hungarian heritage, was born in Europe and migrated to Australia with her parents and sister. At the tender age of six her love and interest in painting began to emerge and she knew her future lay there. By fourteen her life's ambition was more apparent as she was devoting all her time and efforts to painting. Agnes is mainly self-taught, thus demonstrating the passion and dedication she has had all her life to painting. She completed a course at Monash
University in the Old Master's Techniques to further diversify and enhance her talent and over the years she expanded and broadened her knowledge in her chosen medium - oil! Her oil paintings range in size from miniatures to mural size. She recently completed
a wall size commission that has in excess of 20 horses coming over a rise in the high country. That painting now hangs in a major race course in Asia. Throughout the years Agnes has won a number of prestigious art prizes and numerous highly
commended awards, which in turn has kept her dedicated and motivated to continue creating her works of art. With over a dozen solo exhibitions, some complete sell outs, her paintings have been purchased by overseas and Australian investors and collectors who all admire her work. Many prominent art

SERVICING ALEXANDRA AND DISTRICT FOR 29 YEARS Murrindindi Guide – Winter 2014 – 11
A stitch in time . . .
The wall quilt hanging in the Alexandra Hospital, depicting a timeline history of the Alexandra area and the hospital, donated by the Alexandra Quilters. By Alison Farrell THIRTY YEARS ago a small group of women met to undertake lessons in patchwork and quilting under the tutelage of the very talented Shirley Hibbert. They enjoyed the classes so much that, at Shirley’s suggestion, the Alexandra Quilters friendship group was formed. Since then, the number of members has continued to grow so that today over 60 women meet twice monthly at the RSL Hall in Alexandra to share their love of this ancient craft, encourage each other with their projects and simply to enjoy each other’s company. An associated craft and chatter group meets on the third and fourth Fridays of every month at the local bowling club. Throughout the years, the quilters have given much to the local community. Early in the group’s history, charity quilts were made to raffle for causes close to the hearts of its members or to provide comfort to those in distress. Today a community quilt is made every year and donated to a local charity to raffle. Those who have benefitted have ranged from Kellock Lodge and Darlingford Nursing Home to the Secondary College’s driver education programme, the SES Support Group and the Yarck and Taggerty Fire Brigades. Proceeds from the group’s annual exhibition of work also go to the designated charity for the year. In 2014 this will be the Alexandra Playgroup. Last year a wall quilt was donated to the 12 – Murrindindi Guide – Winter 2014
Alexandra Hospital which depicts a timeline history of the Alexandra area and of the hospital itself. Seven large panels show the changing face of the town from its earliest inhabitants to the present day. A number of old photographs, reproduced on fabric, show the growth of the hospital from a small bush nursing building to the magnificent structure of today. This quilt was hung in the foyer of the hospital earlier this year, appropriately as part of the group’s 30th anniversary celebrations. Every year, in conjunction with Alexandra’s Truck, Rod and Ute Show, the Alexandra Quilters hold an exhibition of their work. For many years this was held in the Masonic Lodge hall with a number of lodge members helping with the setting up and hanging of the quilts. Following last year’s move to the Shire Hall, the 2014 exhibition will again be found here with additional opening hours on Saturday afternoon. It has been recognised in quilting circles that exhibitions by the Alexandra Quilters are well worth the visit. There is always a huge variety of quilts on display as most members have their own individual style that they love whether it is reproduction, floral applique, tiny hexagons or machine strip piecing. Each year a member’s challenge is also part of the exhibition. This year’s theme is “30 Years of Stitching Pearls” highlighting the group being in existence for 30 years. New members are always welcome to join Alexandra Quilters; beginners as well as experienced patchworkers. Contact secretary Denise Fiddes at alexandraquilters@gmail.com.

The group changed from the Upper Goulburn Food Wine and Culture Group as they felt it was important to bring the group back home, promote the Marysville Longest Lunch, make sure it was not lost and that the ‘local’ suppliers were able to showcase their products. “We had spent a lot of time promoting the area to Melbourne at food and wine shows, however after the 2009 fires things changed. The Mansfield members were growing and putting a lot of effort into their Longest Lunch and started to feel they wanted to have their own food group,” Sam Hicks, a spokesperson for Murrindindi Made said. “It is also in response to the Upper Goulburn Wine producers being broken into north and south regions, the south region being the border of Murrindindi and Mansfield shires near Merton Gap.” “It was warmly welcomed at our AGM in 2013 and via our first round of strategic planning last year we felt it was the new direction for the group,” Sam said. In March 2014 the new group launched its logo at the Really Long Lunch in Marysville. Producers are encouraged to use the logo to proudly proclaim their product is locally made and to assist locals to easily identify these products when shopping. The group’s black and white logo will enhance our producers’ own product labelling and will provide a recognisable symbol on Murrindindi made foods and wines. Businesses are encouraged to get on board with an introductory offer of 16 months membership for $85. www.uge.asn.au has all the details on how to get involved!

Marysville made . . .
MADE IN Marysville and Surrounds is a new gallery and giftware shop in Marysville run by volunteers. It was opened in February 2014 in the Marysville Central building and is a place where local artisans and producers of homemade jams and relishes can showcase their crafts. Paintings in various mediums and amazing photographic works adorn the walls and jewellery, glass, leadlighting objects, tie-dyed clothing, produce and giftware are all available for sale. As individuals these creators couldn’t dream of going it alone but together they have been able to build a successful business where they can create together, share ideas and find wonderful new friendships. In the future they hope to be able to offer workshops and demonstrations.
Tania is a proud member of the Made in Marysville and Surrounds group.
Let’s support our locals and head down to Marysville Central from Thursday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm to see the amazing talent of this community.

New UGFM studio for Yea UPPER GOULBURN Community Radio is to establish a new studio in Yea giving much easier access to broadcasting on community radio for the people of the Yea district. ‘UGFM’ – Radio Murrindindi, broadcasts across the Murrindindi Shire with four transmitters servicing the area at Alexandra and Lake Eildon, Yea and Highlands, Marysville and Lake Mountain and Flowerdale. For the past 20 years UGFM has broadcast from two studios located in Alexandra, and in 2009 established a third studio in Marysville. Programs from both towns are broadcast across the Murrindindi Shire as will those from the new studio in Yea. UGFM President Peter Weeks said that the UGFM Committee of Management had been working closely with the Friends of Yea Railway Committee of Management, the Murrindindi Shire Council and Heritage Victoria to establish the new studio at the Yea Railway Station. “The cost of the project is $40,000 with $10,000 of the funds for the project coming from the Federal Government through a Community Broadcasting Foundation grant; we are currently

Cheviot Ward Councillor and council representative on the Friends of Yea Railway Reserve Committee of Management Cr John Kennedy welcomes the new studio. “We are very pleased to be able to provide a new home for UGFM here in Yea. The communities of Murrindindi Shire benefit greatly from having such a hard working community radio station and to see the service broadening its capabilities is very positive,” Cr Kennedy said.
Local members of the community in the Yea district are encouraged to become involved with UGFM and train to become broadcasters, with the station ready for the opening of the new studio once fundraising is complete and the studio becomes operational. “Anyone interested in becoming a broadcaster will be trained to a level that will enable them to produce and broadcast their own programs across the Murrindindi Shire from any of our studios,” Peter said. UGFM can be contacted on 03 5772 2722 or emailed at info@ugfm.org. Murrindindi Guide – Winter 2014 – 17
A taste of tamworth . . .
Multi award winning duo, Merelyn and David Carter, Carter and Carter, coming to Alexandra in July. THE MULTI award winning country music duo Carter and Carter hail from our very own Kinglake and will be performing at a fundraising concert for UGFM community radio in Alexandra on Thursday 17th July. Carter and Carter (Merelyn and David) are a husband and wife team who have been creating Australian musical history since 2000 with the launch of their debut album ‘Dance Away the Night’. Their songs, including nine national number one country music hits, from their seven albums, DVD and three books, have indeed
given the world a snapshot of their lives which certainly have been colourful. “Each song we create is a snapshot of an aspect of our lives, a glimpse into our hearts and souls. Through our music we choose to share these snapshots with the world. Whether it be one, or one billion people, the challenge is the same – can we connect?” Merelyn and David said. And they certainly do connect; they have toured with their music for over 20 years. The music is positive, uplifting and inspiring. It encourages people to connect knowing that the life Carter and Carter write
about is real – it is their life, it could be anyone’s life. Merelyn and David have been married for 16 years and live with 49 animals on their beautiful mountain farm in Kinglake. They have two children and 3 grandchildren, and faith and family are their highest priorities. They have enjoyed travelling all around Australia and abroad meeting people who have influenced their lives and stories. There have been some lows though, including being caught in the middle of the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires and were heavily involved in the rehabilitation and rebuilding of the fire

Roaming the ranges . . .
By Emily Friedel THE CATHEDRAL Range is a local icon: a striking seven kilometre ridge of sharply upturned sedimentary rock that captures the imagination of outdoor enthusiasts and artists alike. For bushwalkers of all levels, the Cathedral Range is a treasure trove of native wildlife and spectacular views.

metres above sea level on Cathedral Peak and enjoy the well-earned vistas. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for wildlife as you ascend. You may be lucky enough to have a close encounter with the elusive superb lyrebird, a black wallaby or any number of curious reptiles.
The hike up Neds Gully Track and Cathedral Peak Track to Cathedral Peak offers a challenge, for both the legs and lungs, that culminates in breathtaking views in all directions.
Heading north from Cathedral Peak along the Ridge Track will lead you to the Little Cathedral Peak where you can savour the stunning panorama of the valley below – it’s a great place to sit a while, have a snack and catch your breath.
This particular trail takes you from the dense teatree scrub at the foot of the mountain through thick stands of grey box and stringybark and up to the stark, rocky outcrops of the ridge where you can sit 840
A short back-track along the Ridge Track from Little Cathedral Peak will get you onto Little Cathedral Track, which cuts across the side of the mountain back to Neds Saddle and Neds Gully Track. Returning via this
route allows you to get yet another perspective of the Cathedral with views of the seemingly endless greenblue mountains that stretch out into the Great Dividing Range. The walk described above requires a good level of fitness, comfortable footwear with good grip and can be done with a backpack. Times are a rough guide only, based on an average walking pace, and don’t take breaks into account: Neds Gully Track: starts at Neds Gully and finishes at Neds Saddle. This track is rated medium difficulty and will take roughly 45 minutes. From Neds Saddle you can go up to Neds Peak, which is a 15 minute, medium difficulty walk and this is an alternative to the more difficult walk up Cathedral Peak Track.
Cathedral Peak Track: starts at Neds Saddle and finishes at Cathedral Peak. This is a steep ascent, rated hard, that requires a good level of fitness. It takes roughly 45 minutes. Ridge Track: the Ridge Track starts at The Farmyard, passes through Cathedral Peak and finishes at Little Cathedral Peak and is rated as a hard track. The portion of the Ridge Track between Cathedral Peak and Little Cathedral Peak crosses exposed rocky outcrops and will take about 60 minutes. Little Cathedral Track: starts at Little Cathedral Peak and finishes at Neds Saddle. While not that taxing in terms of fitness, Little Cathedral Track can be tricky in terms of footing so is rated as hard and will take roughly 60 minutes. To do the entire circuit described above will take approximately four to five hours.

Bush tucker plants . . .
Warrigal greens By Angus Stewart ONE OF the easiest to grow and most useful bush food plants is known by several common names. As well as Warrigal greens it is also known as Botany Bay spinach or New Zealand spinach. Its botanical name is Tetragonia tetragonioides and it belongs to the ice plant family Aizoaceae. It is a widespread species that grows naturally around the coastline of southern Australia and New Zealand. The famous English explorer Captain James Cook used this plant as a fresh vegetable to ward off scurvy in his crew. Indeed, Joseph Banks took the plant back to Europe and introduced it there where it became a sought after vegetable, apparently served at high society dinner parties. For two centuries it was
probably the only vegetable that the Australian flora has contributed to world horticulture. It is a very easy plant to grow as it is rarely damaged by pests or diseases and is very quick growing. Seed should be sown directly into its final position in the garden after the last frost of the year. It adapts to a wide range of soil types and climates and does not need vast amounts of water as it is a succulent that actually stores water in the leaves and stems. It can also tolerate saline conditions as it is a halophyte (salt loving plant), which explains why it grows so well on the coastline. Give it plenty of sun and it will supply you with crunchy spinach-like foliage throughout the warmer months of the year, even in cooler climates. Warrigal greens is a scrambling sort of plant that
Warrigal greens. should be given plenty of space in the garden. I harvest the shoot tips on a regular basis, as they are the most tender, and this practice also makes the plant branch more, leading to more tips to harvest. The plants also tend to produce lots of seed which will self sow in your garden to provide the next crop. Simply pull out and compost any unwanted seedlings as they will tend to come up rather easily near the mother plant. The genus Tetragonia has around 50 species, so Warrigal greens has a few
botanical cousins. Another Australian one to collect is bower spinach (Tetragonia implexicoma) which grows along the coastline of southern Australia. It forms a large shrub and is also worth growing. Both species contain oxalic acid in the stems and leaves, as does normal English spinach and rhubarb. Oxalic acid is removed from the leaves by blanching in boiling water for a minute and then rinsing in cold water before serving. Enjoy your Australian greens! Alexandra truck show . . .
THE ANNUAL Alexandra Truck Ute & Rod Show is a vibrant spectacle that sees Grant Street (the central business district of Alexandra) adorned with several hundred impeccably manicured vehicles: from restored hot rods to new and working big-rigs. It is an extravaganza of exposed engines, flawless paintwork and polished chrome that gets the mechanicallyminded all revved up. The upcoming 18th annual show promises to be an action-packed, informative and fun event for the whole
family. It will be held on the Sunday of the Queen’s Birthday weekend (8th June) from 10am to 4pm and this year’s program is bursting with free entertainment for anyone who wants to come along for the ride. Exhibits of new trucks from several of the major manufacturers, including Scania, Volvo and Kenworth, will be a highlight of this year’s show – a must see for those who adopt the attitude that ‘bigger is better’. And for those with a need for speed, Red Bull Racing’s
Caltex Racing Team car will be on display. Vehicles entered in the 2014 Variety Club Truck Bash will also roll into Alexandra on the Saturday (7th June) marking the conclusion of their journey, after having travelled as far as Nyngan in central west NSW. If you aren’t that into cars don’t worry, while the kilometres of eye-catching vehicle displays are usually exciting enough to keep even the least automobileinclined individuals interested, this year’s show

On a more sombre note, Rotary Park on Grant Street is also the home for the newly constructed Victorian Truck Drivers Memorial, which will be officially opened the day before the Truck, Ute & Rod Show. The memorial, which is a tribute to drivers and all participants in the road transport industry who have lost their lives at work, was erected by local volunteer tradespeople with most of the construction materials being donated and with active support from Murrindindi Shire Council and the Creative Ministries Network of United Care. The memorial opening will take place at 2pm on Saturday 7th June and will be followed by a nondenominational service. Any families interested in participating are invited to make contact with the organiser, Bette Phillips on 0409 768 883. All-in-all the 18th annual Alexandra Truck Ute & Rod Show is set to be a spectacular celebration of everything from the throbbing V8 engine of a fully decked out B&S ute right through to the artistic display in a log truck’s paint job. This year’s show will be

ALEXANDRA TRUCK UTE & ROD SHOW
By Emily Friedel
THE ANNUAL Alexandra Truck Ute & Rod Show hosts the last woodchopping tournament of the year on the Central Victorian Axemen’s Association (CVAA) calendar. It is the last chance for athletes to display their prowess and collect aggregate points that will determine the best axemen of the season, so is sure to deliver some awe-inspiring performances. The sport of woodchopping was invented by Australian pioneers and in true Aussie style the first recorded competition came about through a bet in a pub: a burly bushman bragging about his skill with an axe was challenged by a lightlybuilt local vet. A contest was arranged to see which of the men could cut through a three foot wide log first and bar patrons laid down their bets. Despite the large discrepancy in size between the two axemen, the finish was so close that a winner couldn’t be chosen and a brawl broke out amongst the gamblers. That first contest, way back in 1870, highlighted that size and brute strength aren’t everything in woodchopping. Speed and

This year’s competition promises some particularly exciting events, with close rivalries from the recent Sydney Royal Easter Show being revisited. Laurence O’Toole Junior who took out the World Championship Underhand Event will once again be pitted against Brayden Meyer who came in a close second. Brayden, who has been awarded Victorian Champion of Champions for the past three years running, was a stand-out at last year’s Alexandra Woodchop and will certainly be one to watch at this year’s tournament. So this Queen’s Birthday

Weekend, be sure to make your way down to Rotary Park in Alexandra to catch axemen and woodchopping implements of all shapes and sizes in a show of mind-boggling skill and athleticism. It will be fantastic entertainment for the whole family and the hotly contested events are guaranteed to produce as much excitement as that first woodchopping bet in 1870 (without the resulting brawl of course). 60 years of Simpsons Fuel I & M Simpson was established by Ian and Mary Simpson in 1953, mostly carting milk from local farms to the Alexandra Butter Factory. They also carted general freight from the local railway siding and supplied drum petrol to local farms for Commonwealth Oil Refineries (COR) which later became British Petroleum (BP). Son Gordon joined them in 1976 and a short time later the company purchased the BP distributor at Buxton, and became I & M Simpson & Son P/L. In 1985 the business partnered with Caltex Austraila and moved into the Caltex Depot at 25 Aitken Street in Alexandra which it still occupies today. The fuel distribution network covering Mansfield was purchased in 2006 from Adrian and Graham Smith and Marcus Smith was employed to look after that area. In 2013 Simpsons Fuel built a 24 hour diesel stop to service the Mansfield region.

Birds . . . Watching birds By Bob Tate ONE OF my favourite bird watching places is the new Great Victorian Rail Trail. There are many places to watch and walk, and one of the good ones is the section between Cathkin and Molesworth. Take the road towards Yea for 15 kilometres and just before the road joins the one to Mansfield there is a turn in to the reserve where parking is easy. Walk in an easterly direction towards Molesworth as far as you wish. It is approximately 3 kilometres to Baynes crossing with another 2 kilometres to Molesworth. There are plenty of water holes/lagoons along the way hosting a wealth of birds in season. One of these is the white faced heron. This heron is found all over Australia, anywhere where its favourite habitat of the shores or edges of lagoons, billabongs, rivers or ocean occurs. It stands about 670mm high with a long slightly down curved beak. It is a two tone grey in colour with white

around the face and front of the neck. Along with other birds of similar habits, such as egrets and bitterns, they have powder feathers on parts of the body. These are very fragile and contain a powder which the bird uses to preen itself and remove debris, including fish slime from its feathers. They feed on the edge of the water especially when there is a margin of mud or sand. When feeding a long G shaped neck suddenly shoots out of the bird with what appears to be an extension aided by a special hinge mechanism at the 6th vertebra. Food includes marine life as well as mice, grasshoppers and lizards. Grasshopper plagues occur in many years and the herons have a ball engorging themselves. Unfortunately insect eating birds of all sorts are susceptible to toxic sprays, whether the sprays are quick kill ones or those which enter the food chain and have longer term effects. The nest is a rather large messy stick structure built

at a reasonable height and not always near water. These birds are non swimmers and there is a high mortality of the young if they build over water. The babies often fall out and drown. The call is a very harsh croak. Wading birds feed on the edges of shallow water and dams built to favour these birds should have gradually
sloping sides. We had a small dam cleaned out in the dry time and had it made saucer shaped with a gradual slope to the deeper part. The birds love feeding around the edge which is lined by rushes and tussocks and this vegetation gives shelter and habitat for many types of water birds as well as the herons.

Omi’s apfelstrudel . . . By Emily Friedel
ONE OF my fondest childhood memories is laying apple slices out on paper-thin pastry, making strudel with my Omi, mother and sister. Of course, the memories of eating the strudel are up there among the favourites too. The making and eating of strudel were communal activities, accompanied by much chatter and laughter; it was so much more than just cooking and I hope to get the next generation of the family involved as soon as their little hands are ready for apple-laying work. Strudel consumption is most satisfying when you’ve been involved in the process from the start, which means plucking ripe apples from the tree in autumn. Apples that are too tart for eating raw make beautiful strudel, so backyard and roadside crops of sour apples needn’t go to waste. There are countless roadside apple trees in the Murrindindi Shire that fruit prolifically and are a wonderful source of free food (if you can get to them before the cockies do!). I won’t tell you where they are – half the fun is exploring the area to find these little fruit-laden goldmines!
CLOSED FOR WINTER FROM EARLY JUNE TO EARLY AUGUST
The most recent strudel we made with foraged roadside apples, eggs from our spoilt flock of chickens and river red gum honey from our beehives. It was a very special (and tasty) strudel indeed. If you would like to try it out for yourself, here is the apfelstrudel recipe that has been in my family for generations, passed down through the Bavarian side.

PART 1: THE PASTRY
7. Cut the dough into four, one section is enough for one strudel. You can freeze the remaining portions.
This makes enough pastry for four strudels, you can freeze any dough you don’t want to use immediately. Each strudel has four to six or so generous portions. Ingredients
1
• 450 grams of plain flour • 2 tablespoons of oil (we just use olive oil) • 2 eggs • A pinch of salt • Up to 250ml tepid water with a dash of vinegar in it
2
3
10. Lay the dough out on the tea towel and very carefully stretch the edges out as much as possible, the dough should be very thin and ‘see through’ by the time you’ve finished, and should cover most of the tea towel.
2. Slowly add in the water, mixing with the fork as you go. 3. When the dough is moist enough to hold together you can stop adding water, and form it into a ball. 4. Knead the living daylights out of the dough for at least 10 minutes – you can’t knead this dough too much, the more the better. The dough is kneeded enough when you cut it with a knife and it has a marbled look. 5. Take the dough into your hands and throw it down hard (flogging) onto the bench top and vent all of your frustrations! Lots of times. (This step is hard to photograph!)
(Prepare apples at this stage while pastry is resting).
9
9
PART 2: THE FILLING
4
6
Sorry, there are no precise measurements for this, it’s largely done by feel and adjusted according to taste, how far you can stretch your dough (the more it stretches the more you can squeeze on) and the type of apple used (for example with a really tart apple you may want to increase the amount of sugar or sultanas). Any baking apple is suitable for this recipe - Omi thought that the old Aussie favourite the Granny Smith was ideal for strudel!
6. Put a little oil on your hands and pat ball of dough with it to stop it forming a crust and rest it, covered, at room temperature for about half an hour.
8
(Before starting the next step have a clean tea towel ready to place the dough on).
9. Take up the dough and further stretch it out across the backs of your hands, being careful to not tear it.
Method 1. Make a well in the flour, put the salt, oil and eggs in and mix with a fork.
8. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface, getting it as thin as possible.
10 Ingredients • • •

Method
11. Brush the top of the strudel with melted butter.
1. Preheat the oven to 190 degrees Celsius.
4
2. Use a pastry brush to paint the pastry (laid out on the tea towel) with melted butter – cover the entire surface.
10
3. Sprinkle a handful of bread crumbs evenly over the butter.
PART 3: THE SERVING
4. Lay the slices of apple over the entire surface of the pastry, in a single layer. 8
5. Sprinkle with sultanas. 6. Sprinkle with sugar or drizzle with honey. 7. Sprinkle with cinnamon. 8. Splat dollops of sour cream all over the top.
9
9. Slowly lift one end of the tea towel to roll the strudel up (don’t leave the pastry on the towel
12. Cook for approximately 45 minutes in the preheated oven, brushing the top with butter every 10 minutes or so. This makes the pastry on top slightly crunchy.
11 longer than necessary as it’ll stick). 10. Gently pick up the tea towel with the strudel and roll the strudel off the towel onto a greased baking tray.
This strudel can be served with cream, ice cream or custard for a delicious, but relatively healthy dessert. Or you can try serving it with plain yoghurt for a healthy meal – we eat it for dinner sometimes! Be sure to sit down and enjoy it with loved ones. Guten appetit! Gastronomic gastropods . . . that populate her snail farm beside the Acheron River in Taggerty, ‘Yarra Valley Snails’.
farm and now sells snails to both restaurants and private customers.
As with any livestock, there is a spectrum of approaches to farming gastropods and Robyn has chosen to ‘freerange’ her stock for ethical reasons: it is kindest to the snails and a more sustainable method.
If your interest in snail flesh has been piqued, keep an eye out for them on the menu at TarraWarra Estate in the Yarra Valley in the near future. And if you are keen enough to try preparing your own, Robyn advises that they have a very subtle flavour so drowning them in garlic butter is a no-no as far as she’s concerned.
Her snail farm is simply an area fenced in with corrugated iron and divided into sections with shade cloth, allowing her to rotate forage crops. To the uninformed it looks like snail escape would be inevitable, but Robyn’s snails are quite content in their home and their territorial nature means they generally stay put.
By Emily Friedel ON SPECIAL occasions, Robyn Schrader likes to serve her snails whole - without trickery or disguise – wrapped in a sage leaf, a slice of prosciutto and wok fried. While most people are initially hesitant to consume what is so obviously and
unashamedly a common garden snail, once they have taken the plunge their attitude is quickly changed to: “I’d have that again!” Robyn is proud to display her snails in their entirety on the plate, and this is an extension of the respect she has for the little critters
It could be argued that Robyn’s venture into snail farming was fate. One Wednesday evening about seven years ago when she would normally be at yoga, she was at home with a sore back instead and caught part of a show on Sonya Begg, Australia’s ‘original snail lady.’ After seeing the program, Robyn knew she had to give it a shot and not long after was on her way to Orange in NSW for a consultation with Sonya. Since that first consultation with Sonya, Robyn has worked hard to develop her
Tamara Fox Equestrian
Like the snail itself, the escargot industry in Australia is coming along slowly and Robyn has faith that “the snail will make its own way.” In fact, this year Yarra Valley Snails was a state finalist in the ABC delicious Produce Awards and recently there has been a spate of media coverage on snails as food, including articles in The Age and Daily Telegraph featuring Robyn. Robyn is a passionate advocate for snail farming and even offers a consultation service for others who might want to give it a go. Snail farming is potentially a low-cost, high-protein and sustainable endeavour – Robyn encourages anyone who likes snails and is willing to treat them with respect to get into it. warn, though, that it’s labour intensive and should not be viewed as a ‘get rich quick’ scheme. Robyn spends about 6 to 8 hours a week tending to her snails, on top of fulltime work as a real estate agent. Planting forage crops, harvesting and purging the snails are all important steps ensuring the end product is not only fit for human consumption, but also makes very tasty little morsels. Snail meat is low in fat, low in cholesterol and high in protein, offering a novel source of nutrition for those with an adventurous spirit and desire to cook with exciting ingredients. They are also a great talking point, so why not adopt Yarra Valley Snails’ motto for your next dinner party: ‘slow down and taste a snail”?! Nursery for natives . . .
FLOWERDALE
Above: a great variety of healthy native plants including wetlands, groundcovers, grasses, shrubs and trees. Below: Rick and his dog. NESTLED AWAY on a 16 acre block of land in the peaceful and picturesque town of Flowerdale, you might stumble across a man, his dog and a native plant nursery. Four years after the first batch of seed was sown, RAW Plants’ pride and enthusiasm for growing native plants is as healthy as the plants themselves. Growing native plants is more than just a business for Rick Wheeler, the owner of RAW Plants, it’s a passion that has taken him away from a potential career in civil engineering. This passion has also led him to join the King Parrot Creek Environment Group (KPCEG) committee where a keen interest in both flora and fauna is shared by all the members. So if you’re ever looking to plant native plants Rick will be more than happy to offer any knowledge that would benefit your project
and RAW Plants can supply the plants required at very competitive prices. Like many children, Rick was fascinated by nature, visiting seedlings he’d grown from seed each day to see how much they had grown and pulling out pesky weeds to ensure these native plants had the best opportunity to thrive. It’s probably no surprise that at the age of 14 his first job was working in a wholesale nursery where he became competent in many aspects of plant production and also onsite installation. After 10 years at this job, and a degree in civil and infrastructure engineering, Rick noticed that the nursery he worked at needed to expand, the only option being to purchase new land. So after some discussion with his parents and his then boss, the concept of RAW Plants was brought to life. With permission to use a fair chunk of his parents Murrindindi Guide – Winter 2014 – 53

As a first job, 60,000 cells of common tussock grass were grown for his former employer, kick starting the business and sending Rick on a very steep learning curve for the next two years. After coming to grips with the requirements of running every aspect of the nursery single handedly, RAW

Currently under expansion, the nursery will soon be able to hold over 350,000 hiko cells or over 200,000 forestry tubes. Whilst the nursery focuses on tubestock, RAW Plants also supply plants in cells, 10cm and 14cm pots. Cells are grown to order only, and a

Donkey magic . . . Matilda the healing Donkey By Joanne McInnes I BELIEVE there is a healer in us all, but for some reason, some of us shine brighter than others when it comes to the healing arts. Most of us are born with the innate wisdom of how to heal ourselves, but over the centuries this has been programmed out of us through societal beliefs. Fortunately, most animals still know how to tap into that part of themselves. Matilda, our resident, and much loved donkey, is a sentient being that shines brightly as a natural healer, having maintained a strong ability to see and perceive life on a different level. Matilda was rescued many years ago and at the time had very deformed hooves and it seemed as if she carried the world on her shoulders. With love and care and a herd of Welsh ponies to live with, she soon started to make herself known. Her loud brays could be heard a mile away, and replaced the rooster for our early morning wake-up calls. Being quite the emotional girl, she would always let me know if something was amiss, like an equine escapee wandering out of their paddock. I’m sure the rest of the herd thought she was a right old dibber dobber! It’s Matilda’s highly tuned perception and need to communicate that makes her stand out from the rest and she didn’t wait too long to tell me what her purpose for being was. One day, whilst out walking through
Animal Healer, Sande Cornelius and Jo McInnes with Matilda the Healing Donkey.
my field of ponies and the donkey, I felt Matilda “tap in” and connect with me energetically and with her soft voice, whisper, “I’m a healer”. It’s not unusual for me to experience this type of thing as I’ve been talking and listening intuitively to my animals all my life, but I have to say, some messages are stronger than others and Matilda’s was very strong. From that point on I observed her to see how she interacted with other animals; it became obvious though, that her talent was with people; she was the archetypal wounded healer.
It is quite an amazing thing to watch when people first meet her. They instantly fall in love with her and just want to be in her presence.
other times they lie on a massage table, and she has also been involved with group therapy sessions at our intuitive clinic days.
If they can cope, I will tell them she is a healer, if not, I just let the process take place.
It is interesting to observe that Matilda’s reactions with each person are different. The more emotional baggage they carry the more demonstrative she becomes in wanting to shift it, or bring awareness to it.
The innocent energy of children inspires her, she loves them and will let them climb all over her, smiling all the while. When Matilda interacts with someone she is generally able to pick up where the energetic blocks are with that person. Sometimes people sit on the grass,

for a few weeks who was having marital issues. He is quite an academic and extraordinary artist but his extremely high intellect gets in the way of listening to others, especially his wife.
It is a pleasure and an honour to watch Matilda when she is in the healing space. She will completely tune into the person and it’s as if she wonders off to ancient galaxies; it is like watching a Buddhist monk in prayer.
As much as I love my friend of over 30 years, I would hate to live with him and could sympathize with his very patient wife.
Sometimes her messages can be less than subtle and this also depends on how much the person is ignoring something in their life. I had a friend stay with me
I suggested that he go and spend some alone time with Matilda and lie beside her in the paddock. Within no time she had quietly nipped is ear with her teeth, enough to make the point but without hurting him. He got the message and has been working on being more of a
listener in his relationship. Matilda loves to love and loves to receive love. She thoroughly enjoys the healing vibrations of the Tibetan singing bowls that we place on her back as our way of thanking her. If left to her own devices she would stand with one on her permanently, that’s how much she resonates with them. Matilda is just one of the beautiful equines that I work with in teaching my “Heart Space” program. The “Heart Space” program is about healing and relationship. So much of what people are used to with horses is
“action”; this has nothing to do with “being”. Most people who take up an interest in horses quit within the first 2 years because what they never harnessed was the relationship, without which there is no trust or willingness from their equine partner. Jo and her team at Holistic Equitation teach people how to “feel” and “listen” to the imperceptible messages horses are sending all the time, helping the horse feel heard and creating a deeper connection for both horse and owner. For more information about the Heart Space program visit www.holisticequitation. com.au.

CYCLING TOUR, LAKE EILDON
THE SEVENTH annual Eildon Junior and Women’s Cycling Tour, organised by the Blackburn Cycling Club (founded in 1946), and run on behalf of Cycling Victoria, is scheduled again for this year on the 12th and 13th July. The women’s event is now into its third year, increasing women’s opportunities to compete in Victorian cycling events.
Along with the Women’s Tour, the Junior Tour continues to grow in participation every year. There is strong support from local businesses including Outdoor Education Group, Golden Trout Motel, Eildon Parkview Motor Inn, Rubicon Hotel Motel, Thornton Caravan Park and
Eildon Dam to the north, a breathtaking and technical descent allows single riders to gain more time on the trailing bunches, before driving it home through Thornton and along the rolling Goulburn Valley Highway, back into Riverside Drive for the sprint finish, followed by presentations to all winners at about 2pm. Regarded as the best Junior Tour in Victoria the event attracts the best riders in the state and some from interstate who take the opportunity to try and match it with the Victorian riders.
Blue Gums Riverside Holiday Park and is regarded as the best Junior Tour in Victoria.
This is a great boost for the region in what is traditionally a quieter period.
With an expectation of over 170 junior cyclists, along with over 80 volunteers undertaking roles from traffic control (for the safety of riders and motorists), to first aid officers, plus the support of the families of the riders, the tour is expected to attract over 700 visitors for the weekend.
The carnival-like atmosphere of the tour kicks off with a time trial. Individual riders compete against the clock on the Back Eildon Road on the Saturday morning from 9am. This is followed by a road race in the afternoon commencing around 12.30pm with an iconic finish on the dam wall which all
cyclists enjoy. On the Sunday races start from the reserve at 10am on Riverside Drive. Junior and elite level women cyclists wind firstly through the picturesque flat lands around the Goulburn River and its billabongs, then up through the notorious Skyline hill climb. Upon reaching the summit, where the road and mountain opens up to glorious views of the
“Eildon region in July provides challenging courses against a stunning backdrop of lush mountains and waterways. We run approximately 25 events across a range of age groups, receiving a lot of positive feedback from riders, parents and officials who love participating in the Eildon Junior and Women’s tour,” race director David Gallagher said. For information about the event or the club contact the Blackburn Cycling Club on 0407 308 755, email info@bbn.org.au or visit the website www.bbn.org.au. Murrindindi Guide – Winter 2014 – 57

EAST CENTRAL DISTRICT RIFLE ASSOCIATION
Shooting from 600yards. F Class on the left (with the colourful ally stock and telescopic sight) and Target Rifle on the right with its traditional timber stock and peep sights. Women regularly participate in modern precision shooting with great success. The people standing are the scorers and the man in the red vest is the Range Officer in charge of the safe operation of the range while shooting is in progress.
Precision Target Shooting a challenging and competitive sport THE SPORT of target shooting began in Australia in 1861 and in the local area at Gobur in 1886. The Gobur Rifle Club has remained active since its beginning except for the suspension of shooting due to the world wars. Today the sport is organised by the East Central District Rifle Association Incorporated, an amalgamation of the Yea, Alexandra, Eildon, Merton, Mansfield, Gobur, Euroa and Violet Town Rifle clubs. There are two ranges, one at Gobur and the other at Violet Town. At Gobur shooting is at 50m, 300, 500, 600 and
700 yards and at Violet Town 60m 300, 500 and 600 yards. Two classes of shooting are currently used on the local ranges. First the traditional “open sights” or so called “peep sights” with no optical advantage, similar to rifles used in the Olympic and Commonwealth Games. This is known as Target Rifle Class and in its current form is a specialist single shot rifle, with little resemblance to black powder army issue “martini henry” rifles used in the 1800’s. The second class uses a more “conventional” rifle with telescopic sights and is
known as F class. Within this class there are sections that cater for hunting rifles right through to custom built very specialised rifles. In both classes the expectation is that the equipment will deliver all shots into a 38mm circle at 300 yards or 250mm circle at 1000 yards, the big variable being the ability of the shooter to keep the shots in these very small areas. Currently the world’s best group at 1000 yards is just over 75mm in diameter. Shooting is from the prone position and for those with limited mobility shooting can be from a bench.
Gender is not an issue, one of the top competitors in the local pennant matches was a member of the Australian team that travelled to South Africa in 2013 and is female. Currently members include Commonwealth games representatives, world champions and state champions including the 2014 Victorian National. Like to have a go? Contact Gobur Rifle Club secretary Rob Chaffe on (03) 5772 1620 or visit www.vra. asn.au. The club is always looking for new members, young or old, male or female! THORNTON EILDON FOOTBALL & NETBALL CLUB
The Thornton Eildon Football and Netball Club make a return to the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League after a three-year recess. By Tammy Lovett
for its revival.
IT’S BEEN three years in the making and for stalwart, president and treasurer Wayne Kupke, nothing could be sweeter than watching his beloved Thornton Eildon District Football and Netball Club (TEDFNC) make a return to the league.
The club now has two football sides, seniors and reserves and two netball teams, A and A reserve.
In April the ‘Boners took to the ground in division two of the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League for the first time since the 2010 season.
President, treasurer and stalwart of Thornton Eildon District Football and Netball Club Wayne Kupke swells with pride as he watches his beloved team take to the ground. 60 – Murrindindi Guide – Winter 2014
With dwindling numbers, the club was forced into recess in early 2011, but was dealt a lifeline last year when a dedicated group of members began pushing
“In all the years I’ve been here, this is the biggest buzz,” Wayne said. “It’s a magnificent thing for the community.” Now with almost 100 members, TEDFNC has committed to a two-year contract with the league to ensure the club remains viable in the future. “We’re striving so hard just to make it happen,” Wayne said. “It’s been a hard road.” “This is about survival,
not about winning premierships.” Seniors football coach and player Brad Coller has had and instrumental role in seeing the club return to the league. “It’s great to see the club going again and everyone with jumpers on,” Brad said. Brad’s passion for the club began many years ago and he is the third generation of his family to play for the ‘Boners. “My grandfather, dad and two uncles played before I did. We’ve played over 700 games altogether.” Brad also coached the senior side to victory in 2007, making him the youngest to do so in the club’s history.
Seeing the club’s longstanding lineage back on track has proved a proud moment for Brad, who says his motivation was born out of his “love of the club”. “Nobody knew what they had until they didn’t have it anymore,” he said. Assistant netball coach Kristy Creed said players are buzzing with a renewed sense of determination. “We are all really excited the club is running again. Thornton-Eildon is such a family oriented club; such a great honest feel about the place.” “We have a fair few ‘oldies’ returning to netball who are over the moon to put on the blue and white again and new recruits that have straight away taken on the
determined ‘Boner spirit,” she said.
“It was a big part of my life gone.”
“We know we have strong competition ahead, but we won’t let it get in the way of making our team members and supporters proud of our first season back.”
According to Wayne, the key to the club’s success will be looking forward, not back.
Wayne Kupke first became involved with the club 14 years ago when his son and daughter donned the blue and white after moving to the area. Wayne might never have strapped on a pair of boots and taken to the ground himself, but he says the club has been a big part of his life for more than a decade and was crushed when it was forced into recess. “I use to spend a big part of my life here. I really missed it,” he said.
“It’s a different era from what it used to be; a new beginning, you can’t go back and dwell in the past,” he said. “If we can be successful on the field I can’t see any reason why it can’t go beyond the two years.” Wayne says the club is continuing to seek community support to ensure its success into the future. Sponsorship and increasing player numbers will be crucial in the club’s fight to remain viable. “We’ve got a positive future,” he said.
