Without further ado, may I offer my congratulations on your joyous news. Your wedding will be just the start of a lifetime of happiness together and I send you all my best wishes for the future. W H E N Y O U C H O O S E to have your wedding or honeymoon on the Maltese Islands, you are following in the footsteps of some of history’s most significant civilisations. For more than 7,000 years, the Maltese archipelago has been singled out as a place to celebrate: we have some of the oldest sacral sites on these Islands, used for centuries as the location for lavish festivals. It is not officially understood why the ancient explorers settled
here, but you need only set foot on the Island for a matter of minutes to understand how the appeal has only grown stronger throughout the years. These Islands are alive with colours, sounds, flavours, aromas and activities, the location for great merriment at all times—and all only three hours’ flight from the UK. But there are also areas of utmost serenity, where one can feel as if transported to a secret paradise. The sun shines more than 300
days per year; the sand is golden; and the sea lapping through the bewitching lagoons is always blue. We have an enormous range of the highest-quality services here as well: from five-star hotels to rustic farmhouses; restaurants run by internationally-renowned chefs to family-owned vineyards. There are thrilling bars and nightclubs as well as spectacular examples of art and culture, plus outstanding sights of natural and man-made beauty. When the
sight-seeing is done, there are also spas and wellness centres to offer unparalleled opportunity for relaxation. Everybody on Malta and Gozo welcomes you as you celebrate the beginning of your life together. You will remember these Islands with great fondness as the location of your dream day. THE HEART OF THE MEDITERRANEAN Malta is truly magical as a wedding venue, a place where a photographer can turn a lens in any direction and capture a view of impeccable beauty.
THE ISLAND IS surrounded by the vast, shimmering expanse of the Mediterranean, with year-round sunshine glinting off blue water as far as the eye can see. Golden beaches snake around stunning lagoons; hilltop gardens peer over picturesque bays, harbours and lemon groves. The buildings too are exceptional: the entire capital city of Valletta, which has been named as the 2018 European Capital of Culture, is inscribed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites, while more than 300 churches are dotted across the Island, ranging from tiny, humble chapels to vast, ornate cathedrals, adorned in exquisite finery collected through hundreds of years. Religious wedding ceremonies can take place in any of these wonderful buildings, be it in one of the baroque parish churches or the simple mediaeval chapels. There are also numerous possible venues for civil weddings, including on beaches, in charming remote cottages or in a landscaped garden overlooking the Grand Harbour. You take centre stage on Malta knowing that whichever backdrop you choose will add nothing but more splendour to your most special of days. GETTING THERE AND GETTING AROUND The Island may feel a world away in terms of its peerless opulence and beauty, but Malta is one of the most accessible destinations in

Europe. Flights from the major UK cities take less than three hours, and the Island is small, meaning transfers to whichever venue you choose is simple. There are a fleet of luxury vehicles on Malta to transport you in style and elegance, from chic Rolls Royce and Mercedes limousines to classic, convertible Bentleys and Daimlers. Your guests need not be left out: many of the Island’s vintage buses are now available for private hire. The journey to and from your wedding venue can become among the most memorable moments of the day. Other options are unique to Malta: a traditional karrozzin – a small carriage, drawn by one, two or four horses – can whisk you around the Island. And later you can drift away to begin your life together on a dghajsa boat through the majestic Grand Harbour in Valletta. R E S T I N G YO U R H E A D The Maltese have a welldeserved reputation for exceptional hospitality and there is an enormous range of resorts, boutique hotels and guest houses across the island. There are five-star properties with facilities to match the most
luxurious establishments in the world, as well as numerous rental properties in the finest locations, often with views across the sea, private swimming pools and terraces. The Riviera Resort and Spa, for example, is situated on the very northern tip of Malta and enjoys a peerless view across the sea to both Gozo and Comino. It has three swimming pools – one indoor and two outdoor – and guests can peer out across the sea as they swim. Similarly, the contemporary styles of the db Seabank Resort and Spa offers high-end, allinclusive packages a stone’s throw from the Island’s largest sandy beach in Ghadira Bay. Its sister hotel, the db San Antonio Hotel and Spa, overlooks the picturesque St Paul’s Bay. The Corinthia Hotel is located in St Julian’s, close to the centre of Malta’s vibrant nightlife. Yet the rooms stare out over the tranquil sea, flooded in the year-round sun. There are also a selection of charming boutique hotels on Malta, offering distinctive features and high-quality facilities in a more intimate environment. Hotel Phoenica is located amid 7.5 acres of garden at the entrance to the UNESCO-listed capital city of
Valletta. Rooms offer views across the historical Grand Harbour. Almost all of the Island’s hotels provide exceptional wedding packages, meaning your guests can enjoy your big day without having to worry about where they can stay. TA S T E S O F PA R A D I S E The cuisine of Malta represents its enviable location in the middle of the rich sea and combines influences from across the Mediterranean region. Ingredients are fresh and wonderfully flavoured, prepared with a combination of rustic cooking techniques and haute cuisine. Caterers on the Island can prepare any meal for all specifications, including traditional wedding breakfasts, expansive dinners, canapés and buffets, all prepared with the finest local produce. Several top European chefs have made their home on Malta, transforming the Island into a hub for gastronomes. It is always also possible to sample Malta’s array of award-winning wines, many still produced by small familyowned vineyards, and the Island’s own beer. All of Malta’s hotels provide bespoke wedding menus, combining both traditional and modern food, while numerous
catering companies can also tailor menus to be served at any venue of choice and to satisfy all tastes. PA M P E R I N G A special day demands special treatment, particularly for the happy couple and their closest friends and family. Malta is home to some of the world’s finest spa hotels, where the opportunity to be pampered is far too attractive to be passed up. The very latest, luxurious treatments are all available on Malta, including algae body wraps, Thalasso therapies and balneo baths. There are Vichy showers, Okkaido and massages in a hydrojet tub. You can find the most state-of-the-art facilities on Malta and Gozo, and expertly designed all-inclusive packages. Myoka spas are unique to Malta and Gozo and can be found across the Islands. Myoka’s main focus with wellness is the overall improvement of quality of life, with particular emphasis on relaxation, inner peace and individual equilibrium. The Myoka Ayurveda Centres, whose treatments originated in India in about 5000BC, draw on seven thousand years of wisdom distilled to purify the body, mind and soul.

with ricotta cheese or peas), fenek (rabbit stew) or ftira (a flatbread topped with numerous ingredients). It is always possible to sample Malta’s array of award-winning wines, many still produced by small family-owned vineyards, which offer wine-tasting tours. There are also countless vibrant nightclubs in which to dance the night away, which sometimes spill over into beach parties. Tired legs can always be rested beside swimming pools, in peaceful cafes or in the spa.
Similarly the list of locations for civil ceremonies is endless and includes ancient citadels, ornate landscaped gardens and romantic beaches. Wedding parties are welcome at a vast array of exquisite locales.

Villa Arrigo is an elegant property in San Pawl tat-Targa, an exclusive area in the Maltese islands. It is conveniently situated within walking distance of a nearby chapel and Villa Arrigo also hosts numerous weddings within its grounds. Couples can have their civil ceremony followed by a reception, dinner or a simple get together at the venue, with each wedding organised entirely around the individuals. Villa Arrigo was originally known at the turn of the 20th
century as Villa Garcin and belonged to the Garcin family. After many generations the estate was sold to The Agius family, who in 1986 decided to rent the property to Ralph Arrigo, who changed the name of Villa Agius to Villa Arrigo and turned it into one of Malta’s leading event venues. PALAZZO PARISIO & GARDENS
OVERVIEW Palazzo Parisio is a stately home with a history, architecture and interior unique in Malta. Originally built in 1733 by the Portuguese grand master Manoel de Vilhena, it was later bought and embellished by the Marquis Giuseppe Scicluna in 1898. As a banker, philanthropist and pillar of the establishment, it was his vision and passion that inspired the spectacular interiors. The magnificent walled gardens rank among the best in Malta. They can be utilised as a beautfiul
backdrop for big events and have even featured in movies such as The Count of Monte Cristo. Christiane Ramsay Scicluna, Baroness of Tabria, who has been responsible for the ambitious restoration of the palace and gardens, now manages the house and all its operations with her daughter, Justine. A stunning venue for all kinds of events, the essence of the Palazzo Parisio experience is best exhibited when seen as the setting for a wedding, as it is the perfect blend of romance, style, exclusivity and excellence. CAPTIVATED BY THE COSMOPOLITAN CHARMS OF MALTA After getting engaged in one of the most beautiful villages in France, on the banks of the River Dordogne, Scott and I knew we wanted a romantic, intimate wedding to match this occasion.
WHEN WE RETURNED home our research began, initially looking at venues in France and Italy until we were persuaded by several sources to consider Malta. From here we stumbled across a wedding planner, Sarah Young, who very quickly responded to our email with a host of options. We had never been to Malta before but were so impressed with Sarah’s efficiency and suggestions that we arranged to visit St Julian’s in May last year. From the instant we arrived our hearts were captured by the blend of fishing-village charm with the plethora of cosmopolitan bars and restaurants, to the luxurious Portomaso Marina. After meeting Sarah and viewing the sea view villa we had selected as a potential venue, we had no doubt this was exactly what we were looking for, particularly with the almost guaranteed sunshine! We booked our wedding for June 2014 and prior to this Sarah

gave us lots of ideas and made the whole planning process so easy. We arrived four days before our wedding day and met with Sarah and her team again to finalise the arrangements and legal duties which took all the stress away knowing that everything was in hand. Our ceremony took place in a private outdoor area with spectacular views of the sea and a clear blue sky, followed by a stand up reception with champagne and canapés. We then dined al fresco on a private terrace with 17 guests, all of whom fell in love with Malta just as we did and described the whole experience as exceptional. Everything from the flowers, the food, the photographer, the guitarist, the hairdresser, was
perfect. There was enormous attention to detail in every aspect of the wedding, and we enjoyed every second of our special day. We thought it would be difficult to match our expectations, but
our time in Malta ended up exceeding them. We can’t wait to come back to relive it all! Laura and Scott Capindale from Lincoln, UK

champagne. We are very fashion conscious and had found our finest outfits, focusing particularly on our shoes!
W E F I R S T M E T in We decorated the venue all in November 1999 when we were white flowers and crystals. When both holidaying in Thailand with our guests arrived, they were friends and happened to be in the greeted by classical music and same local bar. We were living in different countries at the time, so tried a long-distance relationship, but Mikael quickly fell in love with Malta and so moved to the Island. We got engaged about five years later and made a promise that if the law ever changed to permit civil unions in Malta, we would seal our commitment to one another. The law eventually passed in April 2014 and we couldn’t believe that it was now possible for us to be recognised as equal partners. We both love the Island - it is filled with history and culture and the Grand Harbour is simply amazing - so we made it a point that the venue needs to have a harbour view. We chose Hastings Gardens in Valletta, the historical capital city of Malta, and it was a day that we will never forget.

Both of us gave speeches in which we remembered the long and sometimes difficult road we had taken to get where we were. The community had sometimes been hard on both of us and our families, but the end was worth it, and we were able to look into the crowd and see our parents and closest friends and family watching with pride. We cried our hearts out.
Our spirits were quickly lifted again by the talented Maltese singer Chiara, who has represented Malta three times at the Eurovision Song Contest. She is Mikael’s favourite singer, and we were able to sing and dance through the night with her, as well as everyone closest to us. Many had flown in from hundreds of miles away especially for our unforgettable day. Stephen and Mikael

BEAUTIFUL AND AUTHENTIC WEDDING IN MALTA Our journey to married life began in a pub near our home in Ireland, where we first met, and then progressed through a wonderful proposal during a mini-break in Rome.
I T R E A C H E D its highest point of all at our sensational wedding in Malta, which was every bit as romantic as we could possibly have hoped. We first learned about Malta as a wedding destination by talking to a wedding planner in Dublin. Immediately we were captured by the possibilities of the island, where there were so many options of churches for the ceremony and venues for the reception. Our planners were
16
WEDDIN G S IN THE MED
incredibly professional and always had answers to our questions. They worked really hard at making our day as special and memorable as we’d hoped and we will be forever grateful. We eventually chose to get married in the awe-inspiring church of St Nicholas in Siggiewi, and we still remember how some of the locals stopped in the street to watch Tara arrive, which really added to the wonderful feeling of authenticity. There was a red carpet rolled out over the stairs and although both our stomachs were in knots ahead of the big day, the nerves suddenly evaporated as she walked over it and into the church. It was perfect. We suddenly felt like we were alone even
though we were surrounded by our family and friends and our gorgeous little girl Ella. Fr Philip was wonderful throughout and
really made us all feel so welcome. We chose to have our reception at the Limestone Heritage Parks and Gardens, which is such an amazing and unique outdoor setting. Our first viewing of it was at night-time and it really took our breath away with the lighting and waterfall feature and we couldn’t wait to have our reception there. We choose white and light pink to decorate the venue. The bridesmaid dresses were light pink with black straps so Mary Grace and Stephen, our planners, tried to incorporate this at the venue. We had a picture table plan, where we had a funny picture of each guest assigned to each table. The food was great, and then we partied the night away as husband and wife. Everyone told us that it goes by so fast, and it really does. But it was amazing. We enjoyed every minute of the day. Tara and David Sweeney

W H E N W E S AT in the Gunpost Cafe one evening just outside Valletta and watched the most glorious sunset over the Mediterranean Sea, we realised we could not have wished for anything more. It was absolutely priceless.
We had wanted a location for our honeymoon that was easy to get to and where we could have a relaxing and easy-going time, like any couple after the excitement of their wedding day. Malta was a great location as it was a country neither of us had visited before, yet we could get to almost effortlessly. When we were in Malta, we found we could do as much sightseeing as we wanted without feeling exhausted at the end of the day. We had nothing really planned ahead, and it suited us just to play it by ear. We went to the amazing harbour village of Marsaxlokk, which was a paradise for photographers, and also to Mdina, which was beautiful and so relaxing and takes you back through the centuries. We stayed in a renovated 16th century building in the ancient capital of Valletta
and just enjoyed exploring all of its cobbled and winding streets and its magnificent architecture. The weather was great, and the food was delicious. We found one
small cafe/wine bar in particular and visited quite a few times for lunch and dinner. The welcome was always friendly there, and it’s useful that most of the locals speak English. 'As a honeymoon holiday, not having to stress about what to do or organise everything in advance was really important to us. We loved the serenity, the romantic atmosphere and colourful skies. We got exactly what we wanted: a peaceful stress free time and we discovered that Malta is definitely a destination for photography enthusiasts, food lovers and romantic souls! If you want serenity, Valletta is ideal as it is very quiet at night. In general our advice to other couples is just to enjoy all the romance this lovely island has to offer! EVERYTHING AND MORE IN GOZO At only 67sq km, Gozo offers a scaled-down version of all of the best of Malta, plus its own serene character. Odysseus was held captive by Calypso’s love here, and contemporary visitors will be equally charmed by Gozo.
T H E W E L C O M E offered by the native Gozitans when you step off the short ferry ride from Malta is invariably warm, but the speed of life is more laid-back; the beautiful countryside is there to be calmly savoured. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie enjoyed an extended honeymoon period in Gozo. After spending some of the first days of their married life on the Island, they returned within a month and stayed for more than eight weeks, having found the ideal location

for their romantic film By The Sea, written by Jolie. Hollywood’s best-loved couple were captivated by Gozo’s secluded bays and beaches, as well as its exclusive bars and restaurants. You will be similarly swept away by its unique beauty. According to legend, Gozo is the model for Homer’s isle of Ogygia, and a cave near the vibrant red sands of Ramla Bay was the home of the nymph Calypso. The Greek hero Odysseus was held here for seven
years; however long you gleefully stay will not be long enough. RUSTIC CHARMS Gozo is dotted with charming small villages, comprising perhaps a single shop, restaurant or hotel surrounded by clusters of authentic farmhouses. Although the rustic appeal of these centuries-old buildings remains untouched, many are now fully appointed with all mod-cons, including swimming pools, airconditioning and wi-fi, and offer a
unique way to combine tradition with contemporary luxury. Many of these homes are available to rent both for a wedding ceremony and for longer, residential stays. Some of the houses are situated next door to one another, meaning your wedding party can be both secluded and also close by. The local architecture utilises the Island’s iconic golden limestone, which designers have complimented with fittings of rich Mediterranean colours. The
backdrop is at once stately and warm, a perfect setting for your once-in-a-lifetime celebrations. The outstanding selection of buildings on Gozo also house some of the archipelago’s most exclusive boutique hotels and spas. The more intimate settings lend themselves to seclusion and tranquillity, with broad wooden doors opening into private gardens, terraces and courtyards. The five star Ta’ Cenc Hotel, in Sannat, for example is a haven of unadulterated relaxation. The guest rooms, all of which are on ground level, have been specifically designed to be in harmony with the surrounding unspoilt countryside, while its private
cove looks out on to nothing but the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea. UNIQUE SIGHTS AND SECLUSION Few sights in Europe are as enticing as Gozo’s “Azure Window”, a 28-metre high limestone arch, jutting from the rugged cliffs above Dwejra Bay. A popular destination for scuba divers and recreational sailors, it has also featured in films such as Clash of the Titans and The Count of Monte Cristo, as well as in the sensational television series Game of Thrones. It is among the most romantic locations in the Mediterranean,
matched only perhaps by the similarly iconic tiny island of Comino, the third and smallest inhabited island in the Maltese archipelago—albeit by only four permanent residents. Comino is a nature reserve and bird sanctuary, but best known for its “blue lagoon”, where honeymooning couples can lose themselves among the exquisite natural beauty. Gozo’s Ggantija Temples are among the oldest free-standing temples in the world, dating from 3,600 BC. Meanwhile the Island’s fortress capital of Rabat is a bustling hub; markets, restaurants, galleries and shops are scattered at the foot of the citadel, which stands tall and surveys the whole of this bewitching island.
A S U S TA I N A B L E , AWA R E E C O - H AV E N ON GOZO The natural beauty of Gozo – its dramatic coastline of secluded lagoons and peaceful beaches – gives the island its particular, tranquil identity. Better still is the manner in which Gozitans are safeguarding their unique home for future generations to enjoy. By 2020, Gozo will become an “Eco-Island”, a rare haven of selfsustainability and environmental awareness. As an Eco-Island, visitors and residents of Gozo will enjoy a better quality of life as part of a society committed to a wholesome natural and cultural environment. The Island’s cultural heritage will remain strong, along with improved water management, education and agricultural methods, plus better transport and energy conservation. Eco-Gozo provides an assurance for sustainable development in Gozo, and a continued success for the island in the future. N OT H I N G M I S S I N G ON SMALL ISLAND Although noted for its size and intimacy, the small island of Gozo still offers a wide selection of churches and venues for marriage. It is also covered by the same new law that now allows same-sex couples to legally commit to one another, and civil partnership ceremonies can be arranged on Gozo.

A HAPPILY EVER AFTER ON THE SALT PANS IN GOZO It was a warm, sunny day in August, with the deep blue sea glinting and the delicate fragrance of sea spray in the air.
Limousine drove up to the villas to pick up the bride accompanied by her father and bridesmaids, as tradition calls. The beach looked like a scene from a storybook: a small, secluded, sandy beach with a white canopy and chairs complemented the red carpet and the jaw-dropping backdrop: the Mediterranean beneath the setting sun, giving the sky a warm, honey glow. After the ceremony was over, drinks were served to celebrate the event and many photographs were snapped away. The entire party then made I T S E E M E D L I K E an its way by vintage bus to another ordinary day on Malta’s sister striking location for the festivities. island, but it was a day that would The Salt Pans and surrounding be forever etched in our memory: area were transformed into a our wedding day on the idyllic spectacular venue. All the energies were worth it, though, as the bridesmaids all looked sensational in their pink and grey dresses and, in the middle, Sarah was simply stunning in her gown. The groom and his men wore white trousers and grey shirts with little white dots, while the rest of the wedding party all looked amazing in their best attire. A vintage bus picked up the groom, groomsmen and wedding guests and they were soon on their way to the beach where the marriage ceremony was to take place. TAKING IT EASY WHILE HONEYMOONING IN GOZO Like most honeymooners, we wanted a lazy relaxing holiday, with good food and easy day trips. Neither of us knew much about Gozo so it was good to discover a new place together.
and had a lovely daily routine of day trips each morning, stopping off to see interesting churches or villages, then a stop at a favourite ice cream shop, then back to the hotel for a swim and the spa. We always found it easy to find good cocktails and dinner! We loved the fish dishes in the restaurants, especially Aljotta the fish stew, but all the Maltese specialities were great. The people were friendly and spoke good English, it also helped us Brits that driving was on the left, and the roads were quiet so there was no travel stress. THE ISLAND HAS a My favourite part of the fantastic climate for an autumn honeymoon was taking a honeymoon, and was perfect for guidebook to breakfast. I realise our week in October. that might not sound romantic, We stayed at the Hotel Ta'Cenc but it was! At home we eat in Sannat, which had a great spa and pool and was near an amazing cliff with great views. It was lovely for walks, though we were both nervous when the path went close to the edge! I think the most memorable bit was going on an evening stroll after dinner, a bus passed and on a whim we decided to get on. We ended up in the capital and headed up to the citadel where our quiet evening turned into a bit of an adventure, but an easy one too- the island is so small and nothing is very far away, we found a bar when we wanted a rest and then it was a quick taxi ride back to our hotel. We visited most of the popular sites like the Azure window and Ramla Bay, and had a good day trip to Comino. We hired a car
carob tree, while planning fun things to enjoy together. Gozo is a small place and I'd suggest not rushing it, plan walks and appreciate each place fully rather than trying to pack too much into one day. The beaches have lots of quiet coves so it's perfectly possible to claim yourself a beach for two - which is a perfect honeymoon thing. Joanne and Stephen Bartley, Whitstable, UK

a wedding celebration that is both meaningful and unique. “It is of paramount importance to me to see that all is in order on the day and that the event unfolds like clockwork to the satisfaction of all concerned,” Sarah says. She has enjoyed organising modest weddings on a smaller budget, for the couple and their close friends, and also putting together lavish weddings for VIPs who want to entertain close to 2000 family and guests. Sarah can organise civil weddings, catholic weddings, symbolic services and civil unions.
She guides couples through all the legalities involved in rendering the marriage vows valid, and Sarah and her team have all the available information at their fingertips about traditions, etiquette, protocol and trends. The planning starts with Sarah helping couples draw up a realistic budget so there is no gap between the dream and the reality, irrespective of the many bargains she can procure for them. Next she helps them choose the venue. The couple may want anything from a modest celebration in a small wayside chapel to a romantic wedding in an old Palazzo with all the trimmings that help to create an atmosphere of luxury and opulence. Whatever is wanted, Sarah can organise it. The rest follows. Sarah sees to everything from the pre-nuptials through to the end of the honeymoon.
