COASTAL
COASTAL ONE OF THE UK’S N AT U R A L T R E A S U R E S I S ITS UNIQUE COASTLINE. Often charming, sometimes awe-inspiring, never boring, it is not surprising that so many people choose to live along the 7,760 miles of UK coast. As this special magazine shows the Mayfair Office group of estate agents has member firms that handle a large and wide variety of property in exciting coastal locations. In fact our specialist estate agency network offers the best possible resource for those wishing to buy or sell property by the sea. From the rugged coastline of Devon, Cornwall and Pembrokeshire to the dramatic East Anglian salt marshes and across the Channel to Jersey, there is somewhere for everyone. There is something for everyone too, whether it’s a house or apartment on a magnificent cliff top location, beside a gentle tide-washed creek, within a modern marina development with private mooring, or in a bustling seaside town. For sellers we offer the finest route to market. For buyers we offer the finest route to their new home. Being located in the best places is very important but more crucial are our agents – as knowledgeable, expert, helpful and enthusiastic as any in the market. Ask them about beach huts, weekend hideaways, holiday rental investments or somewhere to retire to, as about well as the host of activities that go hand-inhand with living by the coast. I hope you enjoy this introduction to coastal living, Mayfair style.

OMEG A SEA MA ST ER C O - AX IAL CH RONOG R A PH ‘ BU LLHEAD’ OMEG A SEA MA ST ER PRO FES S IO NAL 300M ‘JA MES BON D 50T H ANNIVERS ARY’
The Seamaster’s history is filled with twists and turns, all starting with the 1932 Omega Marine. This strange, twin-cased watch was the first to be patented for use by commercial divers, and kick-started a race to produce the most robust watch possible. Omega’s first Seamaster followed in 1947, and was primarily intended for use as an everyday watch that could be worn without fear of damage from dust and water. Then, in the early 1950s, following the growth of scuba diving as a sport, a glut
16
M AY FA I R COA S TA L – ISSUE 1
of dedicated dive watches began to appear. First was Blancpain’s Fifty Fathoms, which was launched mere months before the Rolex Submariner; the Seamaster 300 followed in 1957. The Seamaster 300 was a radical departure from the original. The slender case became chunky, the elegant dial bold and clear, the depth rating swollen to a colossal 300 metres. But that wasn’t the end for the older model: while the 300 inherited the role as flagship of the Seamaster range, the traditional piece was re-named ‘De-Ville’ and sold as an entry-level watch. It became more popular than Omega expected, and so the De Ville became it’s own collection. The baton of the original Seamaster’s design was passed down to the Seamaster Aqua-Terra, which continues to maintain the essence of that founding watch. The 1957 Seamaster 300, however, found its own niche among the seaweed and silt of the deep. But deep wasn’t deep enough; Omega needed to go deeper. With the help of Jacques Cousteau, Omega developed the Seamaster 600, nicknamed the ‘PloProf ’. Launched in 1971, it battled against Rolex’s Sea-Dweller to become king of the sea. Both watches brought innovation to the table, but it was the Sea-Dweller that ultimately secured the all-important contract with diving agency COMEX. After a lull following the devastating quartz era, which decimated many of the world’s best watchmakers, Omega’s fortunes turned around with the release of the 1993 Seamaster Professional. A clever placement on the wrist of James Bond reignited a former passion for the brand and its flagship dive watch, which hasn’t abated since. BREATHE IT I “LIVE IN THE SUNSHINE, SWIM THE SEA, DRINK THE WILD AIR…” – R A L P H WA L D O E M E R S O N
The variety filled British coastline has long been considered a place where we can not only escape the stresses of everyday life but also improve our overall wellbeing. Breathing in the sea air, going for a bracing swim or simply soaking up the seaside atmosphere are hailed by many as great ways to maintain a healthy body and mind. But is there any truth in these beliefs? And can living beside the sea actually enhance our mental and physical welfare? H I S TO R I C B E L I E F S The British seaside first began to be seen as a healthy and pleasurable destination in the 18th century but it wasn’t until the Victorian era that the concept of a healthy trip to the coast was really embraced by the masses. The railway age brought with it cheaper and easier access to coastal towns and saw a huge development in popular seaside towns and villages around the country, both for tourism and for permanent residency. Ever since, a trip to the seaside and, even
more substantially, a permanent move there has been viewed as a healthy option that provides both a short and long term tonic. It was this common thinking that inspired a recent study from the European Centre for Environment & Human Health, University of Exeter to look in to why and how spending time by the coast leads to better health and wellbeing. The study used data from the UK’s 2001 census to examine how health varied across the country, and found that people were more likely to have good health the closer they live to the sea. Furthermore, the analysis also showed that the link between living near the coast and good health was strongest in the most economically deprived communities. Senior Research Fellow at the European Centre for Environment and Human Health, Dr Ben Wheeler said “We know that people usually have a good time when they go to the beach,
but there is strikingly little evidence to indicate the effects that spending time at the coast can have on health and wellbeing. By analysing data for the whole population, our research does seem to suggest that there is a positive effect.” The study concluded that many of the positive effects ‘may be due to opportunities for stress reduction and increased physical activity’, but more specifically, what elements of the seaside experience are considered by many to provide a mental and physical boost? SEA AIR Ocean air is filled with negative ions which strengthen our immune system and improve our ability to absorb oxygen by neutralizing damaging free radicals. These negative ions can also balance levels of seratonin, making us less prone to anxiety. Sea air may also make sufferers of cystic fibrosis (CF) feel better. Researchers at Ben-Gurion University in Israel discovered that CF patients exposed

to air at the Dead Sea (which has a high oxygen level) ended up with more oxygen in their blood, which improved their breathing. According to a member of the research team, the incredibly high concentration of minerals found in the Dead Sea’s mud, sulphur pools, thermonuclear springs, and in the surrounding atmosphere, also aided the breathing of patients with respiratory problems. S E A W AT E R Richard Russell, an 18th century physician, was an early proponent of the health benefits of sea water and whilst his initial hypotheses that drinking the stuff could cure anything from jaundice to gout, his further testament that bathing in sea water brings physical benefits is something that is still popular today. One such area is Thalassotherapy which covers a variety of treatments involving sea water and marine minerals and is used by spas and wellbeing resorts all over the world. This type of wellness experience is a huge attraction for keen spa devotees who swear by the improved benefits of a sea water based treatment. There is also a school of thought that suggests a dip in the sea can help a number of skin conditions, including acne and eczema. Many parents report that their child’s eczema improves after swimming in the sea. And while this could be due to other factors such as relaxation, a change of climate or diet, sea water does have antiseptic properties and may reduce an infection associated with the eczema.
SUNSHINE While we may not be blessed with the fairest of climates in the UK, getting the sun on our skin is still something we are able to do all year round and is vitally important to our wellbeing. Sunshine is the main source of vitamin D, a vitamin which plays an important role in strengthening the bones and boosting the immune system. Increasingly, doctors in all corners of the world are warning that in our desire to avoid the risk of skin cancer, we have gone too far the other way and aren’t getting enough sun. In Australia, one in four people now has a deficiency of vitamin D and symptoms of this include muscle pain, weak bones, fatigue, lowered immunity, depression, mood swings and sleep irregularities. Being beside the sea has been shown to increase the likelihood of getting outdoors and being outside in the daylight for 15 to 30 minutes a day, even in our climate, can significantly affect our health. EXERCISE From a casual stroll along the beach to the more adventurous sports of kite surfing and yachting, the British coast offers ample exercise opportunities for all walks of life. The necessity of regular exercise is widely known and with a multitude of reports informing us of how vital it is for both our mental and physical wellbeing, if you are in an environment that encourages exercise of any kind, this can only be a good thing. It has been suggested, not just in the Dr Wheeler
study but many others, that those living near the coast are more active than those further inland and with the wide variety of sporting activities the seaside brings, the likelihood of increased participation at all levels is obvious. MINDSET Whether you are skimming pebbles across the sea, staring out to the horizon or sunbathing, one of the special aspects of being near the water is that it inspires contemplation. Researchers have discovered that the sound of waves actually alters the wave patterns in the brain, promoting a deep sense of calm and sending you into a relaxed state. ‘Mindfulness’ - taking time out to focus the brain, much like meditation - is something that is becoming increasingly popular in all areas of society and the contemplative nature of being near water is a perfect place to practice this. So there are many factors that seem to support the theory that simply being beside the sea is good for body and mind with numerous studies having been commissioned to back this up with scientific fact. Much of it is still opinion based but what is undeniable is the beauty of UK coastline and how many people of all ages love living beside the sea and wouldn’t choose to live anywhere else. As Dennis Wilson of The Beach Boys famously put it, ‘I don’t know why everybody doesn’t live at the beach, on the ocean. On the beach you can live in bliss’.

A modern classic There was a time when you could find an artisan boat builder in every port in Britain. While this may not be the case now, the British marine industry still contributes around £1bn to the UK economy and provides more than 12,500 jobs. The unique skills and products that this sector provides are a source of national pride and in a time when so many industries are struggling to keep pace with technological developments, it is interesting to see how one which has centuries old traditions has adapted. Cockwells are a prime example of how a traditional boat builder can thrive in the modern world. From custom yachts and motor launches to superyacht tenders, each Cockwells build is a bespoke project designed and constructed to the owner’s precise requirements. Their team has traditional shipwright’s skills but also use advanced engineering and boatbuilding techniques which enable them to create leisure and commercial vessels up to 80ft. Cockwells are one of the few yards with the knowledge and skills to be able to build or repair a yacht in any material. However, in our age of ever evolving technology it is vital that even the most traditional of manufacturers embrace any
beneficial developments to their trade. Fine craftsmanship is vital, but to succeed in delivering what the customer desires, builders need to also be well versed in the latest technology. Cockwells believe this understanding is integral to their business and believe they are able to overcome any technical challenges their clients may throw at them. One example of how they have managed to incorporate such advancements in to previous builds is the advanced joystick control system; something that provides effortless and accurate control on board and can be fitted to any drive system. Electric windows, electronic privacy glass and on board Wi-Fi are some of the other luxuries previously fitted on their diverse range of yachts. Cockwells are experienced in working to a detailed design package or developing designs in-house from a basic concept. All of their projects are carried out to the highest standards and with an excellent personal service before, during and after the boat building process. From the first meeting and initial concept drawings right though the production of the boat until delivery and beyond Cockwells involve their clients as much or as little as they wish.

ideal for families looking for a fun day away or those who just want to walk in an area of unspoilt nature.
L E E B AY Situated on the north coast of Devon upon slopes of a narrow wooded valley you’ll find the village of Lee. The wonderfully secluded beach of Lee Bay is located 2 miles West of Ilfracombe. Situated below the magnificent Lee Abbey, a rocky beach which is boarded by glorious Devonshire countryside. Much of the nearby area is heavily wooded which makes for some fantastic walks and trails.
E M B L E TO N B AY Located in Northumberland, Embleton Bay is a glorious wide sandy beach with the ruins of Dunstanburgh castle providing a stunning backdrop. The beach is one of the most underpopulated on the coast which stretches for miles in to the distance. Awash with rocky outcrops and rock pools, it is
C O M P TO N B AY One of the Isle of Wight’s best kept secrets, Compton Bay can be found in the much loved open landscape on the southwest section of the Isle of Wight. The beach offers a two mile stretch of contrasting light and dark sands, and in the distance you’ll see the white chalk cliffs at Freshwater. The beach is a favourite for surfers and the nearby expanses of downland are rich in florae and varieties of butterfly for the nature lovers.
B L U E P O O L B AY Situated near Llangennith on the South Coast of Wales you will find one of Gower’s most enchanting bays. There are no roads or lanes leading
to this beach, its location is very sheltered, as such only those who know about its existence are more than happy to take the walk to access it. The ‘famous’ Blue Pool itself is a vast rock pool which according to legend is bottomless....unfortunately that’s not the case, (the depth has been measured between 4-8 metres depending on tide), but it is still deep enough to become a very popular spot for diving.
B ROA D H AV E N SOUTH Few areas of Britain can boast the number of beautiful beaches that reside in Pembrokeshire. Broad Haven South is located 1 mile south east of the village of Bosherston. A wide sandy rural beach which stretches back inland to dunes that lead from The National Trust owned Bosherston Lakes. This beach has masses of soft sand at low tide ensuring enough space for everyone.
KYNANCE COVE Considered by many to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. There is a steep 10 minute walk down
to reach Kynance Cove but that does not stop visitors who know what awaits them once they arrive. On a sunny day the sea turns a brilliant turquoise, reminiscent of the Caribbean’s finest waters. Best visited in low tide when the receding waters reveal mysterious caves and the beach in its full glory.
S OA R M I L L C OV E Soar Mill Cove is a secluded cove near Salcombe in south Devon. A tiny remote sandy inlet set below the rugged black towers of Bolt Head and is not apparent until you are virtually on top of it. The beach is accessed via the south west coast path. A beautiful spot to while away a warm summer’s day.

The Italian west coast is one of the finest sailing destinations in the Mediterranean. There is the extraordinary Portofino, treasure of the Ligurian Sea, or the archipelago of the Pontine Islands laying south of Gaeta. However, nothing can touch the alluring charm and rustic beauty of the Amalfi Coast in the Gulf of Solerno. The ultimate way to take in its full majesty is by sailing along the coast and dropping anchor at various locations along the way. This is not just the domain of the experienced sailor who wishes to navigate their own vessel, for the less experienced there are plenty of sailing tours offering fantastic experiences. Many who decide to embark on this trip head off on a popular loop around the Bay of Naples and Amalfi Coast, which starts and ends at the island of Procida. Here are some of the highlights on the way.
NAPLES Naples is the capital of the Campania region and the largest city in southern Italy. A lively and vibrant city full of historical and artistic treasures within the narrow, winding streets, it is worth spending a few days here. Take in one of the world’s finest collections of Greek and Roman antiques at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, for opera devotees there is the stately San Carlo, which remains a must-visit as the oldest active opera house in Europe. However, there is one thing you must do above all else...you are in the home of the pizza and as such are never far from the delicious aroma emanating from an oven. Beware though – they take pizza seriously in Naples, so much so that in 2004 the Ministry of Agriculture issued regulations outlining how a real Neapolitan pizza should be made... so don’t go asking for stuffed crust.
ISCHIA Situated in the northern end of the Gulf of Naples, this volcanic island is a great place to start your trip. The largest of Italy’s Phlegran island archipelago, Ischia has wide open stretches of forestland. After docking, head out to visit Castello Aragonese a sprawling 15th-century fortress that was once used to protect the island from pirates. At Le Fumarole Beach you can relax on the warm sand, which is heated from a volcanic basin that lies underneath the bay.
AMALFI It’s now time to cruise south away from Sorrento and head to the town of Amalfi on the breathtakingly beautiful Amalfi Coast. Just sailing along this stretch of exquisite coastline will make the entire trip worthwhile. Amalfi is, as one would expect, the village most representative of the Amalfi Coast. The harbour and small colourful village are surrounded by green mountains and there are many sites to discover, such as the Cathedral of Sant’Andrea with its distinctive stripy façade. In the evening, dine at one of the many restaurants that line the seafront, or for a late evening drink there are a cluster of bars nestled in many wonderful squares. For those who not only like spectacular views but also a bit of a workout, there are walks along the narrow clifftop trails and through the lemon groves to the village of Ravello. Here the must visits are Villa Cimbrone and the “terrace of Infinity”, and Villa Rufolo, with its beautiful gardens that so inspired the composer Wagner. Before leaving, be sure to stop off at La Dolceria dell’Antico Portico for a coffee and pastry.
S O R R E N TO Dominating its own little bay-within-the-bay, Sorrento's seaside vocation is given historical depth by its wealth of Renaissance palazzi and Romanesque churches. Quaint artisan workshops are packed together within a maze of medieval alleys and there are many worthwhile cultural attractions – such as the Museobottega della Tarisalignea, dedicated to the history of Sorrento’s marquetry work, or the delightful 14th-century cloister of the church of San Francesco. POMPEII When the eruption of Mount Vesuvius started in AD79, it caught the local population utterly unprepared and afterwards the ancient city lay buried for centuries until its rediscovery in the late 15th century. Now a UNESCO-listed archaeological site , you can explore the area at leisure, seeing exquisitely preserved temples to the ancient gods, as well as an amphitheatre, frescoes and Roman baths.
P O S I TA N O Just a short way along the coast is Positano. It is set in a dramatic vertical panorama of colours; the green of the Monti Lattari, the white, pink and yellow of the Mediterranean houses, the silvery grey of its pebble beaches against the blue of the sea and sky. Although similar to Amalfi with its steep narrow roads, huge fortified walls and numerous watch towers, Positano is a majestic historical town in its own right. It became a chic retreat for the glitterati from the early 20th century after a new road united the town with Sorrento and Naples – Picasso, Steinbeck and Liz Taylor are just some of those that fell hopelessly in love with the landscape and this is reflected by the high-end fashion boutiques dotted throughout the town.

CAPRI Cruise northwest and you come to the glamorous island of Capri. Known in Greek mythology as the “isle of the sirens” it was a favoured resort of the Roman emperors. The town of Capri is the most glamorous on this voyage: you’ll find the biggest selection of designer shops, nightclubs and, of course, the famous Piazzetta: the centre of the island’s glitzy social whirl. Anacapri is less crowded and here you will also find Grotta Azzurra – the famous Blue Grotto lagoon – a tiny sea cave at the waters edge that’s illuminated by shards of sunlight entering through cracks below the surface of the water – a magical experience.
PROCIDA The final stage of the loop takes you back up to Procida, the oldest and smallest island in the bay of Naples. Here you can do a final bit of sightseeing: visit Terra Murata – the historical centre of Procida – or Castello d’Avalos, a 16th-century fortress where you can look out over the vibrant Marina Corricella. Film buffs can try to spot locations used in movies such as Il Postino and The Talented Mr Ripley. As your journey comes to an end what better way to celebrate than in one of the fine local restaurants, such as Ristorante Vivara or Caracale.
