COASTAL THE COAST ISN’T JUST F O R H O L I DAY S . . . O R IT NEEDN’T BE. It can be for life or a lifestyle. Every year thousands of people choose the coast as a place to move to from further inland. Whether it is for the big skies and flat fenland of East Anglia, the commuter friendly coastline of the south east, the creeks, headlands and estuaries of the Westcountry or further afield to the north of England, Wales and Scotland there is something for everyone. It seems that despite the warmer climes of France and Spain the British coast remains a firm favourite with homebuyers. The weather can certainly be a little more changeable but the relative security of the UK property market makes buying here often a safer option and a better investment. In the late 60s and early 70s when continental travel gripped the imagination of the British public some of our coastal towns dropped out of favour. Now there are clear signs that these are back in vogue again. Their period seafronts and charming villas offer plenty of scope and return for the creative buyer. In these pages of Mayfair Coastal you will find plenty of examples of some of the best properties for sale by the sea. Do also check out the Mayfair Office website – mayfairoffice.co.uk – for a more in-depth look at what is available around our shores. But if you are tempted by the weather elsewhere don’t forget our sister site – mayfairinternational. com. There you will find properties to suit all tastes and pockets.

Watch collectors love to talk about the “classics”– the best, most enduring models from years gone by that are as attractive today as they were on the day they were made. For whatever reason, certain vintage watches posses a timeless appeal, either thanks to their innovative designs, mastery of traditional forms, association with cultural or artistic eras, or some other combination of ephemeral qualities. But it’s easy to forget that, once upon a time, these watches were brand new. Often, they weren’t even particularly popular when they were first released; rarely has anyone predicted they would achieve a legendary reputation. It begs the question: which watches out there today will become the classics of decades to come? The watch for review here may be a perfect example of just such a future classic. This is the Zenith Heritage Ultra Thin, a timepiece that was new in 2010, but which isn’t regularly featured among Zenith’s most famous and eye-catching models. This is a watch that devoted collectors and industry insiders talk about as a real gem; something subtler than the icons we’re used to seeing; something built to endure rather than dazzle. The context for the Ultra Thin, which Zenith has since repositioned within the “Captain” collection, is the legacy of Jean-Frédéric Dufour. Having been made Zenith CEO in 2009, Dufour did such a good job for the company that he was offered the position of Rolex CEO just five years later. Dufour took the reigns from the controversial previous CEO Thierry Nataf, who had embraced more extravagant, attention-catching deigns and whose tenure is now discretely forgotten

in the Zenith history books. It’s an easy place to be forgotten—Zenith’s heritage stretches all the way back to 1865. If any company knows about classic horology, it’s Zenith. Fast forward to the current decade, and the release of the Ultra Thin. Unlike some of its high-end competitors, Zenith is not particularly known for the thinness of its watches, but it categorically succeeded in producing a fine example of ultra thin haute horlogerie that could easily stand its ground against the likes of Jaeger-LeCoultre and Piaget. At just 7.6mm thick, the watch is exceptionally graceful and slender, even if it is not exactly record-setting. If you’re used to more regular proportions, you’ll find the Ultra Thin slips under your cuff very nicely, and is so light that you’ll hardly notice its presence. Indeed, as a sumptuous dress watch, it’s clearly designed to do just that. But timeless elegance is not achieved by thinness alone. The real glory of this piece comes from a subtle combination of all its qualities: masterful aesthetic restraint, flawless finishing, a superb mechanical calibre and the quintessential beauty of its case. The Ultra Thin enjoys a comfortably modern 40mm case diameter and, combined with the thin bezel, this creates a large expanse of dial. The effect is impressive thanks to the subtle golden sunburst effect radiating from the dial, and further enhances the grace created by the case’s thinness. When we think about classic watches, one key quality comes to mind: uncluttered dials. The most elegant timepieces have traditional, minimalist

designs that make them highly legible and able to withstand the changing of fashion. The Ultra Thin scores highly on this measure, boasting a supremely classic yet thoroughly modern look that is the essence of refinement itself. What does feature on the dial—nice large hands, detailed appliqué indexes and a wellconsidered small seconds subdial—only serves to improve the sense of modesty, rather than eat away at it. Because of this, as well as the magnificent sunburst finishing, the watch looks equally fantastic in each of its different case materials and dial colours. Finally, the Ultra Thin is blessed with that essential ingredient for any classic: an in-house movement, made specifically for this piece. Zenith is one of the most renowned makers of fine mechanical calibres, and the automatic Elite 681 is no exception. At just 3.47mm thick and a conservative 126 components, the 681 exhibits the very best of the Zenith manufacture, up to and including the gorgeous 4Hz tungsten oscillator with Côtes de Genève patterning that you can ogle through the sapphire caseback. As one of the earliest watches added to the Zenith stable under the helm of Jean-Frédéric Dufour, the Heritage Ultra Thin has all the makings of an iconic timepiece that could endure for years to come. We look forward to celebrating its classic status in 2050! John Wallis is a contributor to Watchfinder & Co.’s digital publication The Watch Magazine. THE WIGHT STUFF Planning on visiting Cowes for the first time? Here’s a few handy tips to make the most out of your trip. Get up, get out of bed. Make sure you catch the start of the sailing, which is usually around 10am. A great vantage point can be found just off the castle of the Royal Yacht Squadron, while another popular viewpoint is on the shore side in front of the Esplanade. Finger in the air. Understanding the wind direction will help in choosing where best to watch the action. To give you an idea, if it’s a westerly the grass on The Green will be good, if it’s an easterly you may want to choose Cowes Parade. Down the home straight. See the competitors coming to the finish around 4.30pm – head to the Royal Yacht Squadron to cheer them in. OPE NING PAG E : YACHT I N F U LL SAI L. You can book on arrival in Cowes, but this is on a first-come firstserved basis, so if possible it is a good idea try to sort it out in advance. Come for a day, stay for a week. There’s so much to see and enjoy, so try to stay for at least a few days, then you can enjoy the full range of what Cowes has to offer. Tune in. Cowes Radio provides a vital source of up-to-date information and is available on any FM radio. Boom banger bang! Be sure to catch the spectacular fireworks display that ends the week of international yacht racing. Why does it always rain on me? Unfortunately the sun doesn’t always shine – this is the UK after all – so dress appropriately and be prepared for our infamous changeable weather.

The legendary Cromer coxswain Henry Blogg T H E C O A S TA L TO W N O F C R O M E R , N O R F O L K I S N OTA B L E F O R A N U M B E R O F R E A S O N S B U T N O N E M O R E S O T H A N F O R B E I N G H O M E TO T H E M O S T D E C O R AT E D L I F E B O AT M A N I N R N L I H I S TO R Y, H E N R Y B L O G G .

Often referred to as ‘the greatest of the ‘lifeboatmen’ Blogg spent his entire career at the Cromer Lifeboat Station and was coxswain for some of the most courageous rescues of the last century. His 3 RNLI gold medals, 4 silver medals, George Cross and British Empire Medal are testament to a man who dedicated much of his life to saving others. Born in Cromer on 6th February, 1876, Henry was introduced to the world of fishing and life boating by his stepfather John Davies. Leaving school at 11 to help his stepfather on the family crab boat, Henry quickly gained the knowledge of the local tides, currents and rocks that would serve him invaluably for the rest of his life. When he was 18 years old he joined the Cromer lifeboat crew and made his first service on 28th December 1894 aboard the lifeboat Benjamin Bond-Cabbell. The arduous row and gruelling weather conditions didn’t put him off and this service became the first of 387 launches in his 53 year career. In 1902, after 8 years of service and at the age of 25, Henry was voted in as Second Coxswain. 7 years later, in November 1909, Henry was unanimously elected by the crew as Coxswain - a position he would keep for the next 38 years. During this period there were several spectacular services that resulted in Henry and his crew saving countless lives and displaying bravery of the highest order. THE MEDAL WINNING SERVICES On 9 January 1917, having already launched earlier in the day, Henry and his crew were called out to the stricken wreck of the SS Fernebo in what would become one of the most memorable and daring rescues of the time. Fighting gale force winds and torrid seas, in an open boat powered only by oars, the boat was thrown back on to shore at least 3 times. After a monumental

effort they finally reached the shattered ship at midnight under searchlights from the clifftop. The 11 crewmen were safely brought ashore by which time Blogg had led his men for nearly 14 hours of seamanship in the toughest conditions imaginable. One of the longest services Henry was involved in started on 14th October 1932, when an Italian vessel, Monte Nevoso, became stranded on Haisborough Sands. The lifeboat made numerous launches to the vessel, while the Monte Nevoso’s captain and three other crew refused to leave the ship. With the weather turning for the worse, the four men eventually left in their own motor boat when the vessel broke up and the lifeboat returned home, some 52 hours after the original launch. 29 crew in total were saved as well as a St Bernard dog called Monte who was presented to Blogg by the grateful captain of the ship after the rescue. On 26 October 1941, the SS English Trader of London ran aground on a sandbank on the other side of Haisborough Sands. In torrid conditions and heavy seas, the lifeboat sent out to the rescue was thrown on its side, launching 5 of the crew, including Henry, in to the sea. After being picked up by the one crewman still on board they returned to the nearest harbour in Great Yarmouth and set out again at 3am. By this time the sea had abated and the ship’s 44 crew, who weren’t expected to last the night, were rescued. Henry retired in 1947 at the age of 71, a full 10 years over the retiring age, having saved 873 lives. No other lifeboat crew member has been awarded as many medals as Henry Blogg and he is rightly remembered as a favourite son of the town of Cromer. There are reminders all around the town of Blogg’s great deeds and heroism and in 2006 the RNLI Henry Blogg museum was opened standing proudly near the spot where he went out on his first rescue.
