2014 SABRE BASEBALL
MARIAN UNIVERSITY GAME NOTES
W
ith the 2013 season in the rearview mirror, Head Coach Jason Bartelt and his staff are excited for what the upcoming season brings, which hopefully includes a number of victories for the Sabres.
The 2013 season was not one that was easy to digest for Sabre fans, as Marian missed out on the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference tournament after being swept by Concordia Wisconsin, whom they needed to at least split to earn a spot in the tournament. At times the bats were silenced and the offense sputtered during the last week of the season, resulting in two shutouts to the Falcons. What didn’t help matters was “Mother Nature’s” effect on the season, forcing Marian to play 12 of their 22 conference games in a span of eight days. Despite the setback of missing out on the postseason, Bartelt is satisfied with where his team is heading into the 2014 season. A large majority of the pitching staff returns, which posted a team ERA of 3.76, ranked third in the NACC. A huge factor in the team’s pitching success was junior Brandon Winfield, who finished the season with a conference-leading 1.89 ERA and an All-Conference Honorable Mention. In 52.1 innings, Winfield allowed 11 earned runs while striking out 42 and only allowing 13 walks. He’ll be joined by All-Conference Second Team selection, senior Sam Forkert, who after a successful spring with Marian and summer with the Madison Mallards of the Northwoods League, has garner the attention of a number of professional scouts. Forkert returns for his senior season after sticking out 61 batters in 58.1 innings, averaging 9.36 strikeouts per game. Joining Forkert and Winfield in the rotation will be juniors Bryce Taylor and Trevor Nicholson. In eight starts last season, Taylor went 5-2 with a 3.15 ERA, 43 strikeouts and 20 walks. Nicholson made five starts for the Sabres going 1-2. In 21.2 innings, he struck out 19 batters and surrendered 14 walks. All-Conference selection senior Chad Langley returns after posting career-highs in batting average (.408), RBIs (31), and hits (58). Bartelt has already penciled Langley in as his
2014 SABRE BASEBALL
MARIAN UNIVERSITY GAME NOTES clean-up hitter and hopes to provide some protection to the Racine, Wis. native to allow him to see better pitch selection over the course of the season. Highlighting the list of newcomers is a junior transfer from UW-La Crosse, Jordan DeBoer. The two year starter for the Eagles comes to Marian and will take over the shortstop duties for Will Martin, who the Sabres lost to graduation following last season.
“Jordan is the total package, and we’re excited to have him wearing blue and white this spring,” Bartelt said. “He can hit, he can run, he can play great defense, and he brings a leadership value to our program that can only benefit us.” While DeBoer headlines the newcomers for Marian due to the impact he’ll have from day one, Bartelt is quick to share that the other new faces in Fond du Lac will still provide a much needed role on the team in providing depth. “We had a tough stretch during the heart of our conference season last year and I felt it hurt us because we didn’t have as much depth as was needed,” Bartelt said. “This year, though, I feel like we were able to address those concerns and should be more prepared if we encounter something similar this season.” Behind the plate, senior Matt Bromley and junior Ryan Blise will split the catching duties with each bringing a different aspect to the game. Blise is a defensive specialist that has great tools behind the plate. Bromley, on the other hand, provides more offensive upside. Even with their different aspects, expect to see these two split time throughout the course of the season. Filling in at the designated hitter role will be a rotation of juniors Casey Schreiner and T.J. McCoy as well as sophomore Tony Grannis. Schreiner, a right-handed hitter, had six of his 13 hits go for extra bases in the limited action he saw. McCoy as a left-handed hitter batted .417 in 11 games including nine RBIs. Fitting into the mix at times will be Grannis, who will also see time as an infielder for the Sabres.

MARIAN UNIVERSITY GAME NOTES
At first, Langley will be the starter on day one and fans shouldn’t expect to see him move from that spot. As the sole returner from the 2013 All-Conference team, Langley is poised to build off his breakout season at the plate. Combine that with his 1.000 fielding percentage and you have yourself a top-notch corner infielder. Sliding over to second base, junior Chase Eagan and sophomore Tony Grannis are the top two contenders for the starter’s job. Both players are versatile and can play the position well. At times, Eagan has shown improvement in the offseason with his bat, but Bartelt is happy to know that he has two second basemen that he’ll be able to count on this season. Both can be valuable to the lineup and so it will be a challenge for Bartelt to find a spot in the lineup for them. At shortstop, DeBoer has been inked as the starter for opening day and Bartelt doesn’t see that changing any time soon. The Waupun native has also shown promise from the bullpen, so he could see some time. In fact, Bartelt eluded to the possibility of DeBoer having a prominent role coming from the bullpen. When DeBoer enters from the bullpen, look for sophomore Earl Vorpagel to slide in and handle the duties at shortstop. Third base provides the most interesting scenario for Marian who has four potential starters. Sophomore Tyler Oren will receive first look based on the fall season and the winter workouts. He provides a solid arm, which can be crucial for balls hit deep in the hole. Bartelt shared that junior Casey Schreiner, sophomore Cody Schaefer, sophomore Mitch Buss, and Grannis are all in the mix for the starting job at the hot corner. Expect to see them have chances during the spring trip to Arizona to prove themselves and earn the starting job. Trotting out to the outfield, there won’t be many changes from last season. Sophomore Adam Ryan returns for his second season with the Sabres and is expected to continue patrolling left field. “We have some versatility in the outfield with Adam as he has shown he can play in either left field or right

field,” Bartelt said. “With his bat in the lineup, we have both good power and good speed working to our advantage.” In center, All-Conference Freshman Team selection sophomore Cole Miklavcic will return and brings with him gazelle-like speed, something that Bartelt is very excited about on both offense and defense. “We’re looking at Cole to be our leadoff hitter once again, something that he excelled at last season,” Bartelt said. Miklavcic hit .348 with an on-base percentage of .414. In 112 at-bats, Miklavcic was only set down on strikes 13 times. When it’s time to shut the game down, the Sabres have an interesting card up their sleeve. Vorpagel and DeBoer could share setup and closing duties. Last year from the bullpen, made 10 appearances, logging 22.2 innings, struck out 15 batters, and allowed only six walks. In its preseason poll, the NACC selected Marian to finish sixth, which would give them a spot in the conference tournament. However, to simply make the tournament is not something that Bartelt is satisfied, nor is the rest of his team.

MARIAN UNIVERSITY GAME NOTES
“We believe heading into this season that if we get the right pieces in place, we can make a statement in the NACC,” Bartelt said. “We want to do more than just make the tournament and bow out in the first round.” While every series in the NACC is crucial for postseason placement, there are three in particular that will draw the close attention to the loyal Sabre followers. First and foremost, on April 6th, Marian will host Concordia Chicago at Herr-Baker Field. The Cougars were tabbed as the favorites to grab the NACC crown as well as a preseason Top 25 ranking by D3Baseball. “Concordia Chicago is at the top of our conference for a reason,” Bartelt said. “This series will be huge for us as it provides a measuring stick to see where we are at as a program.” The day before Marian hosts CUC, they’ll be on the road in Madison taking on Edgewood College. The Eagles were picked to finish 7th in the preseason NACC poll, one spot behind the Sabres. This rivalry goes all the way back to the days of the old Lake Michigan Conference and will certainly be a true battle for the Sabres. The third and final series that Bartelt tabbed was March 30th against Wisconsin Lutheran. Similar to Marian, they’re a program that has had success as of late, reflected in their fifth-placed position in the preseason poll. “The series against Wisconsin Lutheran matches up two programs that are very similar in how they’re built,” Bartelt said. “It’ll be interesting to see who can come out on top.” For many teams, the key to a successful season is consistency, which holds true for the Sabres. Last season, they ran into stretches where the offense would stagnate, resulting in 3-0 or 1-0 losses that could’ve easily been turned into wins. In addition to the offense, Bartelt believes their four-man rotation is among the best in the conference and on any given day could beat any team in the conference. Marian kicks off their 2014 campaign this Thursday in Tucson, Ariz. as a part of the Tucson Invitational Games. On Thursday, they’ll play a doubleheader against Bethany Lutheran, members of the Upper Minnesota Athletic Conference. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
