HISTORY: The Sabres lead the all-time series 14-2-1...The two squads split last year’s series with Marian winning game one by a score of 4-3 and Concordia Wis. winning game two by a score of 6-3...The head coach of the Falcons, Jason Wise, was previously the head coach at Marian for eight seasons...Before leaving Marian, he compiled a record of 119-88-14

STORYLINES

BIG STORY: Last weekend’s sweep of Northland kept Marian in the chase for a solid playoff spot, but they’re going to need some help from other teams in the conference...If Marian hopes to host an opening round series of the NCHA playoffs, they’ll most likely need to win five of their last six and hope for Lake Forest to drop potentially three of their last six - - - TEAM SCOPE - - MARIAN: A sweep could not have come at a better time for the Sabres. After going winless in their previous nine contests, Marian swept Northland at the Blue Line last weekend, winning 4-1 and 5-3. In Friday’s game, the Sabres converted twice on the power play, with freshman Brodie Jamieson scoring both goals. Senior Josh Baker grabbed a pair of wins on the weekend, moving to 4-9-0 on the year. All four of Baker’s wins have come when Marian has swept an opponent (MSOE & Northland). CONCORDIA WISCONSIN: The Falcons are just one point ahead of Marian in the NCHA standings and enter the weekend winless in their last four outings. Before that, however, Concordia was on a six-game winning streak, dating back to November 30. In their current four-game skid, the Falcons have been outscored 23-10. WHO’S HOT: Junior Brian Berger has recently found his shooter’s curve, scoring three goals and three assists in his last five games...He’s joined by senior Matt Williams, who’s lit the lamp three times and earned helpers on two more in his last five games...A young Concordia team is paced by Devin Stuermer and Brett Penner who have combined for 20 goals and 17 assists...In his last five games, Stuermer has three goals and one assist while Penner has three goals and two assists

FIRST HALF REVIEW

MARIAN HOCKEY

ollowing their first round exit in the MCHA playoffs a season ago, Head Coach AJ Aitken and his staff brought in some pieces to help get his team over the hump. While their overall record won’t blow anyone away, they’ve put themselves in a position to be contenders in the second half of the season. The Sabres could not have gotten off to a more frustrating start than they did this year. On opening night, an overtime penalty shot by UW-Stout handed Marian their first loss on the year. Senior Tyler Klein put the Sabres out in front early on in the first, but a strong third period by the Blue Devils would erase the lead. Things didn’t get any easier for the boys in blue, as they hosted St. Norbert the following Friday. Klein led the way once again, giving Marian a 1-0 lead in the first period. But the Green Knights came back with two unanswered over the final two periods to escape an early season upset. A four-goal third period the following night by St. Norbert would set Marian back to an 0-3 start, which is something that every team wants to avoid. The squad would suffer one more setback to Lawrence before busting out to a 6-2 win at the Blue Line to earn their first NCHA points of the season. Marian was also able to hold onto the “Battle of 41” trophy with their shootout victory. “After losing on Friday, I thought Saturday was a mustwin game for us and our guys responded well,” Head Coach AJ Aitken said. “We had a lot of new faces in the line up and it was great to see our depth come through with a win at home.” Traditionally a powerhouse Freshman defenseman Derek Perl in the former MCHA, MSOE entered their weekend series with Marian winless and found no love from the Sabres. Senior Josh Baker posted back-to-back shutouts, while the offense chipped in four goals on Friday and another two on Saturday to put Marian on a three-game winning streak. Non-conference games against UW-Superior and UW-Stevens Point would see a tale of two nights, as Marian put up seven goals on the Yellowjackets, but then were held scoreless against the Pointers. Klein, in his first game against his former team, scored three third period goals to put the game out of reach. “Tyler has been our best player so far without a doubt,” Aitken said. “He can play in all situations and has shown that he can score on any shift. Teams are forced to pay attention to him at all times.” Two disappointing losses came in the MIAC/NCHA Showcase on Thanksgiving weekend, as the Sabres lost both games by a goal to St. Olaf and Gustavus Adolphus. Senior Matt Williams scored three times on the weekend, but would see his team fall to St. Olaf, 4-3, and to Gustavus Adolphus, 3-2. Marian wrapped up the 2013 portion of their schedule with a home series against thirdranked Adrian. The Bulldogs came in with the top offense in the NCHA, averaging 5.00 goals

per game, and only allowing 1.22 goals per game. In game one of the series, freshman Derek Perl scored with 43 seconds remaining in the third to send the teams to overtime. Neither team could gain the upper hand, resulting in the 2-2 tie. “Derek has impressed from the start with his patience with the puck and offensive ability he has shown,” Aitken said. “He continues to earn more playing time and is being relied on more in key situations such as the power-play, penalty kill and last minute situations.” Senior forward Matt Williams The Bulldogs flushed out their frustrations on Saturday, scoring six unanswered goals. Three of the six came on a two-man advantage five-minute major power-play. With only four regular season home games remaining for the Sabres, Aitken applauded the support that the team has received from the community.

FIRST HALF REVIEW

MARIAN HOCKEY

Junior forward Brian Berger

“Thank you to our student section for their continued support at the games. It is awesome to see the students come out and cheer on the team. I really believe that we have the best student section in the league.” After the holiday break, Marian will hit the road, facing Concordia-Moorhead and St. John’s (Minn.). They’ll return to the NCHA schedule the weekend of January 18 and 19 when they play a home-and-home series with Lake Forest. “Every point in the conference is very important,” Aitken stated. “There is no way we can take a game off or shift off as it is going to be very competitive in our conference.”

HEAD COACH

HEAD COACH: AJ AITKEN

The 2013-14 season will mark the second for A.J. Aitken as head coach of the Marian men’s ice hockey program. He led the Sabres to a 13-121 overall mark and the program’s fourth straight MCHA North Division title after spending the previous nine seasons as associate head coach of the St. Norbert College men’s hockey program. Prior to arriving at Marian, Aitken was a key contributor in St. Norbert’s recruiting efforts and helped lead the Green Knights to a second consecutive NCAA Division III national title and third in the last five years in 2011-12. During his tenure with the Green Knights, Aitken was involved in all aspects of the program, primarily for the team’s recruiting efforts and in guiding the junior varsity program. St. Norbert won three NCAA Division III championships, played in seven NCAA Division III Frozen Fours and six NCAA Division III national championship games. The Green Knights are a sparkling 217-37-23 during his time on the hockey staff. Aitken is a native of Fort McMurray, Alta. and played for NCAA Division I Michigan Tech from 1997-2000. During his four-year career, Aitken played in 140 games, scoring 14 goals and adding 17 assists for 31 points. He also served as the Huskies’ team captain during his final two seasons. Aitken, a finance major at MTU, was also named Academic All-WCHA twice. As a professional, Aitken played with Macon and Memphis of the Central Hockey League. His stint in Memphis from 2001-03 resulted in being a part of a pair of CHL championships. Aitken, his wife, Rachel, and three children, Eliza (8), Ian (5) and Hattie (1), currently reside in Fond du Lac.

MARIAN HOCKEY

his weekend will be the final home game of the regular season and will serve as senior day for the class of 2014. The four-year seniors that are on the roster are special to me. I started broadcasting for Marian four seasons ago and I’ve seen them grow as players, students, and people. I know in college that players graduate and move on to other things, but it is always tough to say good-bye to seniors, and this class will be no different. In this week’s edition of “In Front of the Mic” I thought I’d share my favorite moments from each of the seniors that may be playing for the last time at the Blue Line.

Ashton Reinboldt may not be a four year senior, but he’s had plenty of memorable moments as a Sabre. My favorite Reinboldt moment was when we were playing MSOE in Milwaukee. He got behind the defense in the Raider zone and had a one on none on the goalie. He beat the goalie on the far side and top shelf after making a nice move on him. That would be the only goal that we needed that day in a 2-0 shutout. Matt Williams is a player that I’ve covered for both the Sabres and the Bears. I know how hard he worked to become eligible to play for Marian and it is one of the things that I really respect about him. My favorite Williams moment came this year when we were playing Gustavus Adolphus, and he had two goals in the second period. I’ve always thought that is was so cool that Matt Berger got to play with his brother Brian, it’s not something you see a lot of at the college ranks. An ever more of a rarity is seeing two brothers in the sin-bin together like what we saw last weekend against Northland. I’ve found it amazing that his parents have gotten to see so many of their games together. My favorite Matt Berger moment had to be when we were playing St. Norbert in 2011. He one timed a shot off of a faceoff and hit twine to give the Sabres the lead in the second period. Less than three minutes later, Brian would follow suit, giving Marian a two-goal lead over the defending national champions. Even though Tyler Klein has only been with the Sabres for two seasons, I will miss watching him play. I love how hard he works on the ice and his overall skill set. He has had plenty of great moments in his brief time here. My most memorable Tyler Klein Moment came this year against Superior. His dad made the trip from Fargo that night to see Tyler play against his former team. Klein netted a hat trick in the game, and I don’t know who was happier about the performance. His dad had a smile from ear to ear after the game, and Tyler seemed pretty pumped up after the game as well. I think this season Tanner Burton has won the “Roughneck” award most. The award shows his willingness to do anything to help the team win games. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen him blocking shots in his career and there have been times when he could barely get back to the bench, but he’d be back out there for his next shift. My favorite moment came a couple of season ago. Tanner registered a hat trick out of nowhere against Northland in 2012. I can’t believe that Chris “Freddy” Frederickson is finally a senior. He is always the host of our team events and makes them fun and interesting. I don’t know if he is going to stick around or not, but I hope he does so that he can continue to be our master of ceremonies. Josh Baker has so many memories for me to pick out, and it was tough for me. I’m pretty sure that he’s the only goalie that I’ve seen that’s had to serve his own penalty. He had to twice in his career. My favorite Baker moment came this season when we were playing Stevens Point. Josh made 47 out of 49 saves in the game. And a lot of those saves were grade-A chances from Point. The attack was in our zone most of the game, and he made save after save. I thought that it was the best game I’ve ever seen him play. Those are my favorite moments from this year’s seniors. Let’s hope that there will be plenty more this season.

It’s your dream you can make it as big as you want.

IN FRONT OF THE MIC by ADAM HILL

My favorite moment from Robbie Bailey came in the 2011-12 season. We were playing Lawrence at home and he scored the game-tying goal. I remember that this was a tight game, and the Lawrence rivalry really added to the intensity.
