STORYLINES
HISTORY: The Cobbers lead the all-time series 2-0-0, with the teams last playing in 1996. ConcordiaMoorhead won both games of that weekend series by scores of 11-3 and 10-3. Saturday will be the first ever matchup between Marian and St. John’s. BIG STORY: Coming off the holiday break, all three teams will be looking to kick things off on the right foot. For Marian, this will be the last weekend of non-conference play before spending the next six weekends in NCHA play. - - - TEAM SCOPE - - MARIAN: Heading into the 2013-14 season, the Sabres were well aware of the challenge that laid in front of them. Although it took them longer than they would have liked to get their first win under their belts, they battled through adversity and are in a position to catch teams off guard in the second half. Just before the holiday break, the Sabres claimed valuable points over Adrian in a 2-2 tie. CONCORDIA-MOORHEAD: With a three-game winning streak intact, the Cobbers will give Marian everything they can handle Friday night. Last time out, Concordia-Moorhead claimed victory over UW-River Falls with a 2-1 overtime win. Senior Chris Neamonitis made 44 saves in the effort, good for his eighth win of the season. ST. JOHN’S: The Johnnies will present a difficult challenge for the Sabres on Saturday, as 21 different players on their roster have tallied at least one point. Last time out, St. John’s were the victors in a non-conference battle with St. Scholastica, winning 3-2. WHO’S HOT: Sabres forward Matt Williams has four points in his last five games, scoring three goals and adding an assist ... For the Johnnies, Josh Gross has posted two goals and five assists in his last five, good for seven points ... The duo of Caleb Suderman and Andrew Deters has the Cobber offense cruising in their last five games. Suderman has three goals and five assists, while Deters has three goals and four assists. GP

FIRST HALF REVIEW

MARIAN HOCKEY
ollowing their first round exit in the MCHA playoffs a season ago, Head Coach AJ Aitken and his staff brought in some pieces to help get his team over the hump. While their overall record won’t blow anyone away, they’ve put themselves in a position to be contenders in the second half of the season. The Sabres could not have gotten off to a more frustrating start than they did this year. On opening night, an overtime penalty shot by UW-Stout handed Marian their first loss on the year. Senior Tyler Klein put the Sabres out in front early on in the first, but a strong third period by the Blue Devils would erase the lead. Things didn’t get any easier for the boys in blue, as they hosted St. Norbert the following Friday. Klein led the way once again, giving Marian a 1-0 lead in the first period. But the Green Knights came back with two unanswered over the final two periods to escape an early season upset. A four-goal third period the following night by St. Norbert would set Marian back to an 0-3 start, which is something that every team wants to avoid. The squad would suffer one more setback to Lawrence before busting out to a 6-2 win at the Blue Line to earn their first NCHA points of the season. Marian was also able to hold onto the “Battle of 41” trophy with their shootout victory. “After losing on Friday, I thought Saturday was a mustwin game for us and our guys responded well,” Head Coach AJ Aitken said. “We had a lot of new faces in the line up and it was great to see our depth come through with a win at home.” Traditionally a powerhouse Senior goaltender Josh Baker in the former MCHA, MSOE entered their weekend series with Marian winless and found no love from the Sabres. Senior Josh Baker posted back-to-back shutouts, while the offense chipped in four goals on Friday and another two on Saturday to put Marian on a three-game winning streak. Non-conference games against UW-Superior and UW-Stevens Point would see a tale of two nights, as Marian put up seven goals on the Yellowjackets, but then were held scoreless against the Pointers. Klein, in his first game against his former team, scored three third period goals to put the game out of reach. “Tyler has been our best player so far without a doubt,” Aitken said. “He can play in all situations and has shown that he can score on any shift. Teams are forced to pay attention to him at all times.” Two disappointing losses came in the MIAC/NCHA Showcase on Thanksgiving weekend, as the Sabres lost both games by a goal to St. Olaf and Gustavus Adolphus. Senior Matt Williams scored three times on the weekend, but would see his team fall to St. Olaf, 4-3, and to Gustavus Adolphus, 3-2. Marian wrapped up the 2013 portion of their schedule with a home series against thirdranked Adrian. The Bulldogs came in with the top offense in the NCHA, averaging 5.00 goals

per game, and only allowing 1.22 goals per game. In game one of the series, freshman Derek Perl scored with 43 seconds remaining in the third to send the teams to overtime. Neither team could gain the upper hand, resulting in the 2-2 tie. “Derek has impressed from the start with his patience with the puck and offensive ability he has shown,” Aitken said. “He continues to earn more playing time and is being relied on more in key situations such as the power-play, penalty kill and last minute situations.” Freshman defenseman Derek Perl The Bulldogs flushed out their frustrations on Saturday, scoring six unanswered goals. Three of the six came on a two-man advantage five-minute major power-play. With only four regular season home games remaining for the Sabres, Aitken applauded the support that the team has received from the community.

“Thank you to our student section for their continued support at the games. It is awesome to see the students come out and cheer on the team. I really believe that we have the best student section in the league.” After the holiday break, Marian will hit the road, facing Concordia-Moorhead and St. John’s (Minn.). They’ll return to the NCHA schedule the weekend of January 18 and 19 when they play a home-and-home series with Lake Forest. “Every point in the conference is very important,” Aitken stated. “There is no way we can take a game off or shift off as it is going to be very competitive in our conference.”

HEAD COACH
HEAD COACH: AJ AITKEN
The 2013-14 season will mark the second for A.J. Aitken as head coach of the Marian men’s ice hockey program. He led the Sabres to a 13-121 overall mark and the program’s fourth straight MCHA North Division title after spending the previous nine seasons as associate head coach of the St. Norbert College men’s hockey program. Prior to arriving at Marian, Aitken was a key contributor in St. Norbert’s recruiting efforts and helped lead the Green Knights to a second consecutive NCAA Division III national title and third in the last five years in 2011-12. During his tenure with the Green Knights, Aitken was involved in all aspects of the program, primarily for the team’s recruiting efforts and in guiding the junior varsity program. St. Norbert won three NCAA Division III championships, played in seven NCAA Division III Frozen Fours and six NCAA Division III national championship games. The Green Knights are a sparkling 217-37-23 during his time on the hockey staff. Aitken is a native of Fort McMurray, Alta. and played for NCAA Division I Michigan Tech from 1997-2000. During his four-year career, Aitken played in 140 games, scoring 14 goals and adding 17 assists for 31 points. He also served as the Huskies’ team captain during his final two seasons. Aitken, a finance major at MTU, was also named Academic All-WCHA twice. As a professional, Aitken played with Macon and Memphis of the Central Hockey League. His stint in Memphis from 2001-03 resulted in being a part of a pair of CHL championships. Aitken, his wife, Rachel, and three children, Eliza (8), Ian (5) and Hattie (1), currently reside in Fond du Lac.

IN FRONT OF THE MIC by ADAM HILL
ollege hockey is truly a unique sport, especially at the division three level. Teams get a long break to go home and see their friends and family back home. The Sabres had a 37-day break from the action and I’m sure the players are chomping at the bit to return to the ice this weekend. The first half of the season had many ups and downs. I’m going to highlight the ups of the first half of the season. My first half MVP for the season is the hardest category for me. This season the Sabres have had some pretty solid goaltending with senior Josh Baker and freshman Mike Baldwin between the pipes. Baker has stopped almost 92 percent of the shots he’s faced, and Baldwin has stopped 91 percent of the shots he’s faced. I seriously considered them for co-MVP. But my first half MVP has to be senior Tyler Klein. He leads the team in goals scored and points. He has eight goals and nine assists on the year. He has also provided the team with great senior leadership. One of the moments that I’ll never forget is when Klein returned to UW-Superior and netted a hat trick. His dad made a surprise visit to the game and he had a smile that went ear to ear. My best newcomer of the year was another tough choice for me. This year’s team has a different look to it, and has lots of great new players. My choice for newcomer of the year has to be freshman Brodie Jamieson. He has recorded two goals and six assists on the season. Jamieson also leads the team in plus-minus at a plus-7. My play of the year so far has to be freshman Derek Perl’s goal to tie the game late against Adrian. There was just 47 seconds left in regulation, and Marian had already pulled Mike Baldwin. AJ Aitken used his timeout to get the right play set up and to get the right players on the ice. Senior Matt Williams won the draw back to Perl who whistled a monster slap shot past goaltender James Hamby for the goal. The two teams would skate to a draw and the Sabres would earn a tough point from the Bulldogs. The funniest play of the year was freshman Adam Ritchie’s empty net goal against MSOE. Ritchie hit one of the slowest shots in the history of hockey. The puck was moving in slow motion like the end of an 80’s action movie. Two MSOE players whiffed on knocking the puck down and it slowly rolled into the empty cage. We all had a huge laugh at that goal on the bus ride back to Fond du Lac. I’m really looking forward to the second half of the year. I think this team is poised to make a run in the NCHA. The tough first half slate should help this team for the rest of the season. The Sabres could be a very dangerous team in the second half. This team has the right mix of veterans and youth. I also think that the long break has helped this team, and we should be fresh and ready to win a lot of games.
