STORYLINES

FIRST ONE UNDER THE BELT: Last Saturday night, the Sabres returned to the Blue Line and defeated Lawrence in convincing fashion, 6-2. This coming 24 hours after Friday night’s disappointing 3-1 loss, the Sabres found the right combination and click on all cylinders. Freshman Scott Milnthorp led the charge with two goals and an assist, while Brian Berger tallied two goals. From the blue line, senior Tanner Burton notched three assists, while freshman Mike Baldwin earned his first win in between the pipes for Marian. TAKING THE BODY: Coming into last weekend’s series with Lawrence, the Sabres knew they would be facing a physical team who uses their size and grit to create opportunities. Both teams landed their fair share of blows, but when the game shifted to the larger surface on Saturday, it’d be the Sabres who would gain the upper hand. SCOUTING THE RAIDERS: With their 0-4 record, MSOE is off to their worst start since the 2002-2003 season. It wasn’t until January 17th that the Raiders won their first game. Through the first two weekends of the year, Patrick LeBeau leads MSOE on the stat sheet with two goals. In between the pipes, Nick Kohn has gotten off to a rock start, posting a 4.11 GAA, allowing 15 goals in his four starts.

MARIAN HOCKEY

ith one year under his belt, Men’s Hockey Head Coach AJ Aitken has his squad set to run the gauntlet, a full-bodied schedule won’t give any breaks to the Sabres. The team will kick off their season this Saturday at UW-Stout, a squad that finished 10-15-2 last season. The league not only under went a name change, but the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association added two new members as St. Norbert and St. Scholastica join the conference formerly known as the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association. The Sabres were winless against both teams last year, losing to St. Norbert 3-1 and St. Scholastica 2-1. However, Aitken feels confident that his team Junior defenseman Thomas Nosella will be ready. “We’ve improved our depth. Josh Baker can be an All-Conference goaltender,” Aitken said. “I think we can compete with the top end teams in our conference.” The end of the 2012-13 season brought with it the departure of a number of key seniors in the hockey program, notably Mitch Kriz, Dakota Dubetz, Brendan Roberts, and Andy Kuechler. With the addition of some new faces, Aitken believes that his team can make a run. “We lost two captains in Dakota and Brendan, but since then we’ve added a lot of depth. We have six full lines now and a lot of roles for guys to grab onto.” Of the newcomers include transfers Rjay Berra (SUNY-Oswego), Ian Harvie (Williston St.), and Ben Morgan (Norwich). Berra, who had a successful career in junior hockey, struggled to find consistent playing time in his first two seasons at Oswego, hurting his offensive production. “Rjay is a skill forward with high end stick skills and has great vision on the ice,” Aitken said. “We’re looking for him to chip in offensively this year.” Harvie captained the 2012-3 Williston State Tetons to a NJCAA National Championship. A Cochrane, Alta. native, he scored 21 goals and added 24 assists over his two-year career at Williston State. “Ian brings great leadership to our team after leading Williston to a National Championship,” Aitken added. Morgan, who had a successful career in junior hockey, joins the Sabres from Norwich University. While Senior defenseman Tanner Burton playing for the Notre Dame Hounds

in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, Morgan put up 18 goals and 18 assists. “Ben brings a load of speed and quickness to our lineup,” Aitken shared. “We’ll be looking for him to add to our offense.” At the top of the list for the returning Sabres this year starts with All-Conference selection Tyler Klein. The Fargo, N.D. native erupted last season, scoring 15 goals and six assists to pace the team with 21 points. Klein was extremely dangerous on special teams as well, scoring four powerplay goals and two shorthanded goals. Senior goaltender Josh Baker “We’re expecting Tyler to take off where he left off last year,” Aitken said. “He excelled in a lot of situations and his confidence is huge.” Senior Matt Berger will captain this year’s squad. The Hartland, Wis. native will be looked to lead his team by example and be the voice on the ice for Aitken. With the potential with this year’s squad, Berger will be asked to shoulder a heavy load. Junior Brian Berger will return after compiling a successful sophomore campaign. The younger brother of Matt, Brian scored eight goals and added 11 assists last season. “We want Brian to have an All-Conference season this year. He’s a dynamic player that can shoot the puck really well,” Aitken shared. Before the end of the calendar year, Marian will have played three of the top four preseason selections in the NCHA. “Every weekend is going to be competitive this season. Knowing this, we want to breed competition within our lineup,” Aitken said. There were some new faces in the locker room when the team held their first practice last Tuesday. Derek Perl, a native of Toronto, has utilized the most of his time with the Sabres so far and has shown promise on the offensive side of the game. Sophomore forward Ben Morgan “Derek has great vision and poise with the puck,” Aitken said. “His ability will allow us to use him in all situations and give us more scoring production on the back end.” Freshman Brodie Jamieson has thrown his hat into the ring as a player who can expect

to see some quality minutes early on for the Sabres. A North Vancouver native, Jamieson has made an impression on Aitken early on. “Brodie’s got great speed that he effectively uses to attack on the rush,” Aitken said. “With that kind of ability, he can be a dangerous player on the ice.” Every team needs a quality faceoff winner and the Sabres appear to have found that with freshman Adam Ritchie. Standing a 6-2, Ritchie has made it known that he’s here to compete with the best, an attitude that has caught the attention of the coaching staff. “Adam has displayed a knack at the face-off dot,” Aitken said. “He’s got great hockey sense on top of that which makes him a quality addition to our program.” The NCHA released their coach’s poll on Monday, with Marian selected to finish fifth. Newcomers to the NCHA, St. Norbert received all nine possible first place votes (coaches could not vote for their own team). Following them, Adrian, who received one first place vote, was chosen second with 73 points. A fresh face to the conference, St. Scholastica was picked third with 62 points. Harris Cup finalists from a year ago, MSOE was picked fourth with 62 points. The Sabres were selected fifth, earning 44 points. Lake Forest entered at a close sixth, with 42 points. Lawrence (34), Concordia (28), Northland (13), and Finlandia (13) round out the rest of the preseason selections. “The competition level in the NCHA is much higher, but the expectations haven’t changed,” Aitken said. “Our ultimate goal is to have home ice advantage for first round of the Harris Cup Playoffs.” Marian will return to Fond du Lac for their home opener on Friday, November 1st as they host St. Norbert at the Blue Line Center. The Green Knights made a run to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament last year and are winners of three of the last six National Championships, all of which came as a part of Aitken’s tenure as associate head coach.

HEAD COACH

HEAD COACH: AJ AITKEN

The 2013-14 season will mark the second for A.J. Aitken as head coach of the Marian men’s ice hockey program. He led the Sabres to a 13-121 overall mark and the program’s fourth straight MCHA North Division title after spending the previous nine seasons as associate head coach of the St. Norbert College men’s hockey program. Prior to arriving at Marian, Aitken was a key contributor in St. Norbert’s recruiting efforts and helped lead the Green Knights to a second consecutive NCAA Division III national title and third in the last five years in 2011-12. During his tenure with the Green Knights, Aitken was involved in all aspects of the program, primarily for the team’s recruiting efforts and in guiding the junior varsity program. St. Norbert won three NCAA Division III championships, played in seven NCAA Division III Frozen Fours and six NCAA Division III national championship games. The Green Knights are a sparkling 217-37-23 during his time on the hockey staff. Aitken is a native of Fort McMurray, Alta. and played for NCAA Division I Michigan Tech from 1997-2000. During his four-year career, Aitken played in 140 games, scoring 14 goals and adding 17 assists for 31 points. He also served as the Huskies’ team captain during his final two seasons. Aitken, a finance major at MTU, was also named Academic All-WCHA twice. As a professional, Aitken played with Macon and Memphis of the Central Hockey League. His stint in Memphis from 2001-03 resulted in being a part of a pair of CHL championships. Aitken, his wife, Rachel, and three children, Eliza (8), Ian (5) and Hattie (1), currently reside in Fond du Lac.

MARIAN HOCKEY

eaded into its 16th season of operation in 2013-14, the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association has grown into a force to be reckoned with in hockey in the West and at the NCAA Division III level. The biggest recent change came in April of 2013, when the league changed its name to its current title and joined forces under the same conference umbrella with the women’s side of the former NCHA. That coincided with expansion once again, this time adding both St. Norbert College and The College of St. Scholastica to bring the membership of the men’s side up to 10 schools.

HISTORY OF THE NCHA

That change was monumental, as the first 15 seasons of league play came under the title of the “Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association”. The new era of the league was embarked on with the new name and logo, moving forward as one of the top conferences in the country. The leader of the change has been at the top, where Dr. G. Steven Larson was named the second commissioner of the league in July, 2010. The original Northern Collegiate Hockey Association dated back to 1980 and included a lengthy history that consisted of 12 NCAA National Championships won by six different members. There was plenty of history to merge when the new era began, one that most notably came into play when discussing the student-athletes’ goal of winning a championship. The NCHA tournament champion will continue to play for the “Harris Cup”, named after MSOE Director of Athletics Dan Harris, who served as the first president of the MCHA and helped get the league up and running to become what it is today. The regular-season champion will receive the “Peters Cup”, named after Bob Peters, the long-time Bemidji State coach. Peters won 728 games and 13 national championships with the Beavers, including two NCAA titles as an early member of the NCHA back in 1984 and 1986. The Peters Cup is an NCHA tradition, as it had been handed out to the NCHA playoff championship winner since 1998. The former MCHA grew up in a hurry after receiving the long-awaited NCAA automatic qualifier to the league’s postseason champion on April 14, 2009. The 2010 postseason marked the first time the winner of the Harris Cup advanced to the NCAA Tournament, with Adrian College falling by a single goal to the No. 3 team in the country that postseason. The MCHA then left quite an early impression in year two of having the automatic qualifier, with Adrian claiming a pair of NCAA Tournament victories in the 2011 postseason before falling by just a goal in the NCAA National Championship game, finishing as the No. 2 team in the country.

HISTORY OF THE NCHA

MARIAN HOCKEY It all started back in the late 1990’s, when a group of independent NCAA hockey programs that all formed within the same time period came together to aid in scheduling and provide additional competitive opportunities for their programs. Hence, the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association was born prior to the start of the 1998-1999 season. Charter members of the league were Benedictine University (Lisle, Illinois), The University of Findlay (Findlay, Ohio), Lawrence University (Appleton, Wisconsin), Marian University (Fond du Lac, Wisconsin), Milwaukee School of Engineering (Milwaukee, Wisconsin), and Northland College (Ashland, Wisconsin). The University of Findlay (OH) hosted the first-ever MCHA Tournament and claimed the league’s first championship. After that inaugural season, Findlay left the league to pursue NCAA Division I membership in hockey and Benedictine dropped their hockey program moving them out of the league. In the spring of 1999, the University of Minnesota at Crookston joined the MCHA to bring the total membership to five institutions. The next addition to the MCHA occurred in 2004-05 when Finlandia University (Hancock, Michigan) joined the conference. After staying at six members for three consecutive seasons, the MCHA saw expansive growth and moved to eight teams for the 2007-08 season, as Adrian College (Adrian, Michigan) and Concordia University (Mequon, Wisconsin) joined the ranks of the conference. The expansion did not stop there, as Lake Forest College (Lake Forest, Illinois) was accepted into the league and began play in the 2009-10 season, with MinnesotaCrookston leaving following the 2008-09 campaign to bring membership to eight schools for the next four years. None of this would have been possible without the dedicated and forward thinking leadership of former MCHA President Dan Harris. Harris, currently the Athletic Director at Milwaukee School of Engineering, spurred creation of the association and led it into the next century. His leadership was so valuable to the conference, that the MCHA named the league championship trophy after him when he formally resigned as the league president following the 2001-2002 season. Terry Brand, who was named the first commissioner of the league in the summer of 2005, was also instrumental, staying in that role until the end of the 2009-10 campaign. Chris Zills started as the league’s Director of Public Relations prior to the 2000-01 campaign, maintaining all statistics, producing the weekly report, and administering the MCHA website. Jim Olson, who was named to his post in July of 2007, completed the staff as MCHA Supervisor of Officials, overseeing the league’s referees. Under the new NCHA, those two staff members will keep similar roles, with Olson overseeing all officiating matters. Zills and Brian Monahan, who previously worked behind the scenes for the MCHA and NCHA to publicize their respective leagues, will be moving into similar, but different roles moving forward for the “new” NCHA. Monahan will serve in the role of Director of Public Relations, taking an active role in promoting, social media, blogging and other “faces” of the media. Zills will be the Director of Sports Information, maintaining the behind-the-scenes aspect of the communications department. The Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association promotes sportsmanship and exists to enhance the academic and athletic well-being of its participants. The members of the MCHA are competitive with any college hockey program in the nation that competes at the NCAA Division III or II level.

MARIAN HOCKEY

ockey is a game that provides lots of firsts. Players can score their first goal, assist on a goal, or get their first win in net. A team can win their first game, shut out a team, or win a shootout. I remember my first hockey game that I ever got to do playby-play. The Sabres were playing Concordia Wisconsin in 2010. I had never broadcasted hockey before, and I was never so nervous in my entire life. I’ve always heard that hockey is the hardest sport to broadcast. I’ve always loved the game, and I wanted to help the team out. We had some major technical difficulties before the game started, and the broadcast didn’t start until the beginning of the third period. But once the broadcast began my nerves went away, and it was show time. I felt like a fish in water, and knew that I would always want to call hockey games. This was despite all of the technical difficulties and my inexperience. I will sometimes listen to that game and just laugh about that experience. This weekend brought many firsts for the 2013-2014 Sabres Hockey team. They of course earned their first victory of what should be many on the season. Freshman Mike Baldwin was in net and won his first game that he started for Marian. We also had some first time goal scorers for the Sabres. Freshmen Scott Milnthorp and Derek Perl scored their first goals of their college careers. Sophomore Ben Morgan also lit the lamp for the first time donning a Marian University jersey. I often wonder if players remember their first goals at every level or if it’s just business as usual for them. This weekend ended in a thrilling way. Lawrence and Marian split the weekend series, and it was a shootout that would determine who would get the Highway 41 Trophy. This was the first time that I have seen a shootout in college hockey. I also must admit that I’m not a huge fan of shootouts, but it was an amazing way to determine who gets the trophy. The excitement of the fans and the team after the shootout win was awesome. It was a great way to cap Freshman defenseman Derek Perl off a weekend of firsts for the Sabres. This past weekend was also parent’s weekend, and we had our annual dinner at the Coliseum. I always love meeting the parents of our new players and catching up with the parents of our returning players. It was another amazing event, and I want to thank Joe and Karin Frederickson for all of their work that they do planning and coordinating our team events. They are so instrumental in setting everything up and I don’t know if any of it would be possible without their help. Right now I’d have to say the best Movember mustache on the team has to be senior Josh Baker. His stache looks like something that you would see on Sons of Anarchy. Or he could be the villain in Over the Top and arm wrestle Lincoln Hawk. Until next week, it’s your dream you can make as big as you want.
