STORYLINES

DROP THE PUCK: Marian will open up the 2013-14 season on Saturday, Nov. 2 as they travel to St. Catherine’s in St. Paul, Minn. The Wildcats finished last season at 11-12-3, falling in the opening round of the MIAC Tournament to Bethel University. The Wildcats return their leading goal scorer from last season in Bailey Rasmussen. As a sophomore, she led the team in goals (11), with four being on special teams. Between the pipes, Alex Hall returns for her senior season. As a junior, Hall went 7-7-2 and posted a 2.28 goals against average making 518 saves. SECOND TIME ROUND: Head Coach Jamie Kivi returns for her second season behind the bench for the Sabres.

SEASON PREVIEW

ntering her second season with the Sabres, Head Coach Jamie Kivi is optimistic about the pieces that are filling in the empty spaces of the puzzle. With her first full recruiting class in session, the second-year coach has raised the bar for her players, pushing them to compete on every shift and in every game. Headlining the returners to the 2013-14 squad include All-Conference Honorable Mention goalie Amanda Alexander. The Sault Ste. Marie native turned away 579 shots last season, good for a .935 save percentage. With the added depth that the Sabres have

Senior defeseman Sophie Schieldt

added this season, Alexander should see a decrease in the number of shots she sees per game. Joining Alexander is Amanda Waigand, who led the Sabres in goals (13) and points (17) last season. Waigand currently is first place in Sabres history for career points, goals, and power play goals. Kivi will be looking to her to continue her high-octane offense on the top line. Kristin Skubic returns for her third season with the Sabres. A Chesterfield, Mo. native, Skubic will be looked to for the intangibles that often times go unnoticed. “I think you’ll see her offensive statistics grow this year,” Kivi said. “But Kristin is a strong two-way utility player that we are fortunate to have.” In addition to the 10 freshmen joining this year’s roster, the Sabres also welcome three

transfer students to the team. Junior Lauren Zachwieja comes to Marian after spending the last two seasons at Adrian College. A native of Franklin Park, Ill., Zachwieja will be joined on the team this year by her younger sister, Allyson. “Lauren is going to be a solid two-way player for us,” Kivi said. “She has the ability to create plays at both ends of the ice.” A second transfer from Adrian, Nina Laurie, joins the squad this year after taking a hiatus during the 2012-13 season. In her last season of play, Laurie netted nine goals and added 11 assists for the Bulldogs. “She’s a goal scorer, plain and simple,” Kivi said. “Nina sees the game extremely well and can be very creative with the puck.” In the NCHA Preseason Coaches Poll, the Sabres were picked to finish sixth. St. Norbert earned four of the six first-place votes, followed by Adrian, Lake Forest, St. Scholastica, and Concordia. Marian was selected ahead of Finlandia in the poll. “Jessie is a smart player who knows her way around the ice,” Kivi said. “She’s one of the freshmen that you should see contribute from day one.” “The NCHA is a very competitive conference,” Kivi said. “Any team can win on any given night, so that places a high priority on preparedness.” One of the keys for the Sabres this year will be their consistency. If they can limit their mistakes and hone in on highlighting the core, expect them to turn some heads. Headlining the incoming freshmen this year is Sarah Bier. Hailing from Barnhart, Mo., Bier is an offensive defenseman that can create plays for the Sabres on the attack. “Sarah possesses a hard shot from the blue line, but can also distribute and set up her teammates for the goal,” Kivi said.

SEASON PREVIEW

Each one of these student-athletes has a unique opportunity that many of their peers never get. With the women’s ice hockey program still in its infancy, they have the ability to create a legacy that will be remembered for years to come. The road may be bumpy, but with Kivi at the helm, this team will go places.

HEAD COACH

HEAD COACH: JAMIE KIVI

The 2013-14 season marks the second for Jamie Kivi as head women’s ice hockey coach at Marian University. In her first season at the helm, the Sabres won three games, which tied a school record. All three victories came consecutively with a series split at Augsburg followed by a sweep on the road against Finlandia. The Sabres had their first-ever player honored to the All-NCHA squad as goaltender, Amanda Alexander, earned honorable mention accolades. Prior to Kivi’s arrival at Marian, she helped St. Norbert establish a women’s ice hockey program from scratch and compiling an impressive .500 record in the ever-competitive Northern College Hockey Association in its first two seasons of existence. As the full-time assistant at St. Norbert, Kivi was involved in all aspects of the program, primarily the recruiting efforts, the analyzing of game statistics and player performance, and the preparation of the defensive strategies. Prior to joining St. Norbert’s staff, Kivi was a standout defensemen for Division III Elmira College in New York where she led her team to three ECAC West conference titles and three Division III Frozen Four appearances. She was twice named Reebok First Team All-American and was a finalist for the Hurd Award, given by the American Hockey Coaches Association to the Division III Women’s Player of the Year. Kivi now resides in Fond du Lac, Wis.
