HISTORY: The Foresters lead the all-time series against Marian 7-0-1...In last year’s games, Lake Forest won the opener 5-2 before tying 1-1 in the second game. BIG STORY: The Sabres are on cloud nine following last Saturday’s upset of sixth-ranked St. Schoalstica. Marian used four third period goals to send the Saints packing. Junior Amanda Waigand tallied a natural hat-trick in 1:17 of time to lift the Sabres to victory.

STORYLINES

- - - TEAM SCOPE - - MARIAN: The Sabres opened the second half of their season in impressive fashion last weekend, splitting with St. Scholastica. It was the second consecutive ranked opponent that Marian had faced after wrapping up the first half of the season in December against No. 8 UW-Superior. A 6-3 defeat on Friday left the Sabres with a bitter taste in their mouths and vowed to make amends on game two, and that they did. Marian showed strong resiliency in scoring four unanswered goals late in the third period to cruise to victory. ST. SCHOLASTICA: Through the first half of the Foresters’ season, things were in good shape. Lake Forest was in second place in the NCHA, going 0-1-1 against conference-leading St. Scholastica. Last weekend, the Foresters hosted Bethel University, tying on Friday night 3-3 and losing on Saturday 4-2. Similar to what Marian saw last weekend, Lake Forest is a highly potent offensive squad, averaging 4.64 goals per game. Their power-play is operating at a 31.9 percent efficiency, good for third in the NCHA. WHO’S HOT: NCHA Offensive Player of the Week Amanda Waigand returns to the ice after a four-point weekend. The junior tallied an assist on Friday night’s 6-3 loss to St. Scholastica before registering a hat-trick on Saturday’s 5-2 win...Michelle Greeneway leads the offense for the Foresters with 17 goals and six assists. The junior forward is averaging 1.9 points per game.

SEASON PREVIEW

Freshman forward Jessie Meluch

E

ntering its fifth year as a program, the women’s hockey team saw many new faces don the black and blue in October. In total, 12 student-athletes were recruited by Head Coach Jamie Kivi for the 2013-14 season. As with any young squad, the Sabres experienced their fair share of bumps and bruises along the road, but have plenty to be proud of in the young season. The Sabres couldn’t have asked for a better start to their year, opening with a convincing 5-1 victory over St. Catherine’s. In the tilt, junior Amanda Waigand began her offensive crusade, tallying four points on two goals and two assists. Not only was this the first win on opening day in program history, but Waigand also set the school record for points in a game (4). Beginning conference play in just their second weekend of the season, Marian hit the road for Adrian, Mich. The Bulldogs flexed their muscle in Friday’s game, winning 4-1. Marian would come back with a fight on Saturday, taking a first period lead thanks to a Nina Laurie short-handed goal and a power-play tally from Waigand. The lead would be short-lived, however, as Adrian powered back with three unanswered in the second to reclaim the lead. Sophomore Kelly Leslie managed to bring the Sabres to within one with her goal in the third, but Marian couldn’t find the equalizer, falling 4-3. “Amanda is someone we look to when we need a goal or an offensive push,” Kivi said. “Offensively has been a threat, especially on the power play and even when

teams try to shut her down she has found a way to come through for us.” Marian welcomed Finlandia for their first home series of the year on Nov. 15-16. A strong performance by the defensive corps and junior Amanda Alexander provided to be enough to earn the first shutout of the year as the Sabres rode the wave of goals from Waigand and Leslie to win 2-0. Looking for the series sweep, Marian would need the heroics of Laurie who scored twice in the third period to tie the game back up at two. Freshman Rian Lennon would cap off the third period comeback with the gamewinner with less than three minutes remaining. “Rian has stepped up big time both offensively and defensively for us,” Kivi said. “She has gotten stronger as the season moved on. Right now, Rian is playing more like a junior or senior rather than a freshman.” Through the first five games of the season, the Sabres were sitting at 3-2 with a shutout and a series sweep to their name. The good fortune began to fade as they dropped their next five contests by a combined score of 19-6. Over this stretch, the squad worked through their problems, clawing their way to a 2-2 draw against #8 UWSuperior on Dec. 14.

SEASON PREVIEW

Following the holiday break, the Sabres will play 11 straight NCHA games, beginning with St. Scholastica on Jan. 10. Now will be the crucial time for the squad to step-up and take charge. “We have 13 conference ahead of us, so the majority of points are still on the table,” Kivi said. “Every game is going to be important for us if we want to get into the playoffs.” If Marian wants to secure their spot in the Slaats Cup Playoffs, they’ll need to corral points down the stretch. They have shown over the first two months of the season that they can play with the best of the best, so don’t be surprised if they make a run and solidify their spot for the postseason.

Junior forward Lauren Zachwieja

“Overall, we need to focus on playing a complete game rather than showing up for one or two periods,” Kivi said. “Strategically, we need to tighten up our defensive zone and find a better transition on the breakouts. Offensively, we need to clean up our passing so that we aren’t just throwing the puck around. This will lead to better scoring chances for us to finish.” The Sabres will open up the 2014 portion of their schedule Friday, Jan. 10 when they host St. Scholastica at the Blue Line.

HEAD COACH

HEAD COACH: JAMIE KIVI

The 2013-14 season marks the second for Jamie Kivi as head women’s ice hockey coach at Marian University. In her first season at the helm, the Sabres won three games, which tied a school record. All three victories came consecutively with a series split at Augsburg followed by a sweep on the road against Finlandia. The Sabres had their first-ever player honored to the All-NCHA squad as goaltender, Amanda Alexander, earned honorable mention accolades. Prior to Kivi’s arrival at Marian, she helped St. Norbert establish a women’s ice hockey program from scratch and compiling an impressive .500 record in the ever-competitive Northern College Hockey Association in its first two seasons of existence. As the full-time assistant at St. Norbert, Kivi was involved in all aspects of the program, primarily the recruiting efforts, the analyzing of game statistics and player performance, and the preparation of the defensive strategies. Prior to joining St. Norbert’s staff, Kivi was a standout defensemen for Division III Elmira College in New York where she led her team to three ECAC West conference titles and three Division III Frozen Four appearances. She was twice named Reebok First Team All-American and was a finalist for the Hurd Award, given by the American Hockey Coaches Association to the Division III Women’s Player of the Year. Kivi now resides in Fond du Lac, Wis.
