It’s pretty hard to top the sheer mass of some of our recent covers. Guys like Zack “King” Khan, Rich Piana and Martyn Ford to be exact. But we have done just that with a 6’3”, 325-pound ‘Goliath’ on this very issue and we knew that Craig Golias was a perfect fit for our hardcore style. Our cover feature brings the reader into the mind of the behemoth Golias and we were surprised to learn some facts about him when we sat down for the interview. The elephant in the room of the bodybuilding industry since the Arnold Classic in Columbus, Ohio was the anti-trust lawsuit filed by Lee Thompson and the NSL against Jim Manion and Raphael Santoja and the IFBB. Of course, no other media outlet touched this because they simply do not have the balls to. But we did and one-upped it by having none other than Randy Roach do a prequel, if you will. The author of the “Bodybuilding Smoke and Mirrors” series contributed an exclusive feature article on the monopolies that have existed in the industry basically since Day One. Sticking with our controversial style, we spoke with Renzo and Hanna Anerod about their upcoming documentary, “Too Big for the World,” which takes on the subject of the industry abandoning female bodybuilding. MSM has always supported these women and we were more than happy to help promote this film. No issue would be complete without a little steroid talk, right? Well, not only did we accomplish that, but did so with the return of a familiar column from Muscular Development. Thomas O’Connor MD, aka The Anabolic Doc, will now be one of our regular columnists and it is very rare when you can get the combination of real medical knowledge in this area. MD’s loss is our gain, as usual.

Nearly 50 years in the making, Irene Andersen felt that she was ready to take the next step in her career. The IFBB pro had a dream of competin g in the industry’s two most prestigiou s shows – the Ms. Olympia and Ms. International at the Arnold Classic – before she reached that milestone age. But when the 49-year-o ld mother of three felt that she hit her prime, the IFBB had pulled the rug from under her – and the rest of her sistren - by removing those two shows off their annual calendar to what was reported due as low ticket sales.

I’ve got two brand new issues of “Naked Ghetto Trash Babes” Magazine! One on my bedroom night table and one in the bathroom. YES, LIFE IS GOOD!!! LET’S RANT … I’m ready to explode!!! I’M HAVING TROUBLE REMEMBERING WHAT I WANTED TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT THIS MONTH *BIG SIGH* AHHH, YES. THOSE DAMN BIKINI GIRLS! LISTEN, I LOVE BIKINI GIRLS, BUT IN A ‘SEXUAL-DIRTY OLD MAN’ KINDA WAY ONLY! YES, THEY ARE HOT! OH, YEAH BABE. WHEN I SEE THOSE TIGHT LITTLE ASSES AND I GO FRIGGIN’ CRAZY! MMMMM, THAT’S GOOD EATING RIGHT THERE! HEY I ADMIT. I’M LIKE A ‘COMPASS PONTING NORTH!!!’ > *BOING-OING-OING* BUT, I’M SORRY. BIKINI GIRLS ARE NOTHING MORE THAN JUST TITS & ASS. THEY ARE NOT ATHLETES! LISTEN, I KNOW I’VE SAID THIS A MILLION TIMES BEFORE AND I’LL SAY IT AGAIN > BIKINI GIRLS BELONG ON STAGE IN A NIGHTCLUB, AT A BEACH CLUB OR BOARDWALK. ”I SIMPLEY PICK THE 5 GIRLS I’D FUCK FIRST AND THAT’S HOW I CHOOSE MY TOP 5 BIKINI GIRLS.” HHHMMMM…SMART GUY!!! OH, YEAH BABE. I GUESS THAT WOULD WORK FOR ME, TOO. Save a tree; eat a beaver! *wink* A QUICK CONFESSION: “I’M SORRY” IF I’M A LITTLE CRANKY. I’M A LITTLE FUCKED UP RIGHT NOW. *BIG SIGH* YA SEE, MY HERPES HAVE BEEN ACTING UP AGAIN SO I DIDN’T GO TO OHIO THIS YEAR FOR THE ARNOLD CLASSIC. I HATE WHEN THAT SHIT FLARES UP, IT FEELS LIKE SOMEONE PUT A CIGARETTE OUT ON MY DICK! MY HERPES IS NO JOKE; IT’S KEPT ME FROM GOING TO MANY BODYBUILDING SHOWS. I’D LOVE TO SHARE MY HERPES WITH A FEW IFBB PRO BIKINI PIGGIES BUT I’M OLDER & UGLY NOW SO I DON’T STAND A CHANCE! SO I FIGURED NOW’S THE TIME TO ‘COME CLEAN’ JUST IN CASE I’M EVER AT A BODYBUILDING SHOW AND I GET LUCKY BECAUSE SOME PRO BIKINI

PIGGIE FINDS ME HOT! OH, SHUT UP. IT MAY HAPPEN. YOU DON’T KNOW SHIT. SOME PRO BIKINI PIGGIE MAY THINK I’M DELICIOUS, ESPECIALLY SINCE THEY KNOW THAT I PAY CASH FOR SEX! *wink* ANYWAY MY SECRET IS NOW OUT! SO NOW THAT YOU ALL KNOW, LET ME EXPLAIN. OVER THE YEARS, I’VE BEEN WITH MANY ‘SEXUAL PROVIDERS’ (HOOKERS). LISTEN, EVER SINCE I WAS A TEENAGER, I’VE BEEN SODOMIZING (DRILLING FOR ASS CHOCOLATE …PACKING FUDGE) SKINNY GHETTO ‘METHCRACK WHORES’ DOWN IN THE BRONX AND PAYING GOOD MONEY FOR IT, TOO! HEY, I’VE EVEN DATED SOME OF THEM AND BROUGHT A FEW OF THEM HOME TO MEET MY FAMILY. AFTER ALL, THAT’S HOW MY FATHER MET MY MOTHER! I GUESS IT’S TRUE WHEN THEY SAY “THE APPLE DON’T FALL FAR FROM THE TREE!” BACK THEN, I DROVE A VAN AND AFTER MY RENTED GIRLFRIEND FOR THE NIGHT TOOK A FEW HITS OF CRACK, I’D PUT ON A CASETTE TAPE OF BLACK SABBATH’S “FIRST ALBUM.” WE WOULD THEN CLIMB INTO THE BACK OF THE VAN AND GET ROCKIN! HEY, I LEARNED AT A YOUNG AGE THAT BANGING HOOKERS IS A GREAT WAY TO MEET CHICKS WHO PUT OUT! I ESPECIALLY LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THE METH HEADS & CRACK WHORES WHO NOT ONLY CHARGE CHEAPER RATES THAN THE AVERAGE STREEWALKER, BUT THEY ARE ALSO ALWAYS SKINNY FROM USING A LOT OF DRUGS AND I JUST LOVE SKINNY GIRLS! HEY, LETS BE HONEST. MEN PAY WHETHER YOU TAKE A GIRL OUT TO THE MOVIES, DINNER, A CLUB OR WHERE FRIGGIN’ EVER! US GUYS ALWAYS PAY AND THERE’S NO

GUARANTEE THAT WE ARE GONNA GET MUSH POT PIE (PUSSY) OR THE ASS AT THE END OF THE NIGHT! AND KEEP IN MIND, BACK THEN I WAS ALWAYS BROKE, SO I WANTED THE LITTLE BIT OF MONEY I HAD TO BE WELL SPENT. SO I FIGURED THAT I WOULD CUT OUT THE MOVIE & DINNER BULLSHIT. ESPECIALLY SINCE I LIKE MY GIRLS TO BE SKINNY…REAL SKINNY! SO IN THAT CASE, WHY WOULD I BUY THEM DINNER? DUH! SHEEET, I DON’T WANT TO SPEND MONEY IN A RESTERAUNT TO FEED HER FOOD; FUCK THAT! HEY, I’D RATHER BUY HER A HIT OF CRACK OR METH, BECAUSE THIS WAY SHE WOULDN’T BE HUNGRY, ANYWAY! YA SEE, I’M SMART. I AIN’T STUPID! HELL, THE ONLY DINNER I WANTED TO FEED HER WAS MY BEST BODYPART, MY ASS BUSTER (MY DICK, YA FRIGGIN’ MOMO). HEY, TRUST ME. I USE MY CASH MORE WISELY BY FIRST HAGGLING A CRACK WHORE FOR A GOOD PRICE. AND THEN GETTING TO THE BOTTOM LINE, YO, IF I’M PAYING CASH AND A GOODIE BAG OF DOPE (CRACK, ANGEL DUST OR METH), SHE’D BETTER GIVE ME THAT ASS! I KNOW YOU GUYS FEEL ME ON THIS! ANYWAY, THIS IS A PUBLIC NOTICE TO ANY PRO IFBB BIKINI PIGGIE - IF YOU WANT YOUR ASS ORALLY KISSED *WIGGLING MY TONGUE* - LULULULUL - AND THEN DRILLED, AND IF YOU THINK I’M A HOTTIE, I AM WILLING TO PAY YOU BIKINI GIRLS CA$H! JUST CONTACT JOE PIETARO AT MSM HEADQUARTERS FOR MY CONTACT INFO. “Never judge a man by the stains on his ‘tighty-whities.’ It’s what’s inside that counts!!!”…GV … BACK IN THE DAY - I WAS AT GOLD’S GYM IN VENICE, CALIFORNIA BACK IN 1994 AND WAS TALKING WITH MIKE MATARAZZO AFTER A HARD SWEATY TRICEPS WORKOUT WHEN WE BOTH WERE INTERRUPTED BY A MOMO BODYBUILDER WHO CAME WITHIN SECONDS OF BEING KO’D BY MATARAZZO. OK, NOW LET ME EXPLAIN. MATARAZZO WAS LEANING AGAINST A BARBELL RACK SIPPING ON A DRINK & TAKING A LITTLE BREATHER BEFORE GOING ON TO TRAIN HIS NEXT BODY PART. THEN AS I WAS GABBING AWAY TO MATARAZZO, THE MOMO BODYBUILDER -ACTING ALL COCKY - CAME OVER TO THE RACK TO GRAB A BARBELL WHERE

MATARAZZO WAS LEANING. YO, THAT’S WHEN MATARAZZO LIFTED HIS LEG AND BLEW A REALLY ‘LOUD SMELLY PROTEIN FART’ JUST AS THE MOMO BODYBUILDER TOOK THE BARBELL OFF THE RACK. KEEP IN MIND, THIS MOMO WAS WALKING AROUND THE GYM WITH HIS LATS FLARED, ARMS BENT AND A PUMPED UP EGO ALL DAY AND HE KEPT STARING AT MATARAZZO, WHO KEPT GIVING THE MOMO THE ‘JERK OFF’ SIGN WITH HIS FIST. THEN WHEN MATARAZZO ‘FARTED’ ALMOST IN THE MOMO’S FACE AS HE GRABBED THE BARBELL, THE MOMO GOT ‘PISSED OFF.’ IT WAS COMICAL BECAUSE MATARAZZO LOOKED AT ME & SMILED, SO I KINDA KNEW SOMETHING DEVIOUS WAS COMING AND I ALSO KNEW MIKE “TIMED IT” TO HAPPEN THAT WAY! THE MOMO THEN FLARED HIS LATS AND STUCK OUT HIS CHEST TOWARD MATARAZZO LIKE HE WAS SOME SORT OF TOUGH GUY AND SAID, “THAT’S FUCKED UP, BRO.” MIKE JUST LOOKED HIM DEAD IN HIS FACE AND GAVE THE MOMO THE ‘BLOW ME’ SIGN (HE PUT HIS FIST TO HIS MOUTH AND WIGGLED HIS TONGUE IN HIS CHEEK) AS I LAUGHED MY ASS OFF! THE MOMO THEN STEPPED TOWARD MATARAZZO WITH HIS ‘CHIN IN THE AIR’ AND FLARED LATS OUT EVEN FURTHER. MATARRAZO QUICKLY GOT REAL SERIOUS & TOLD THE MOMO TO “PUT YOUR PUNY LATS AWAY AND GET THE FUCK OUTTA MY SIGHT OR I WILL EMBARRASS YOU BY BEATING YOUR ASS IN FRONT OF EVERYONE IN THE GYM, YOU FUCKIN’ PUSSY!!!” MATARAZZO THEN QUICKLY TOOK A QUICK STEP, STAMPING HIS FOOT HARD ON THE FLOOR AND LUNGING HIS BODY TOWARD THE MOMO. YO, THE MOMO BITCH RAN FOR HIS LIFE! MATARAZZO & I BOTH LAUGHED OUR ASSES OFF BECAUSE THE BIG JUICED-UP BITCH RAN TO ANOTHER PART OF THE GYM AND STAYED FAR AWAY FROM MATARAZZO. YO, I LOVED MIKE MATARAZZO! HE WILL BE MISSED!!! SADLY, BECAUSE OF HIS YEARS BATTLING ‘HEART DISEASE,’ MIKE MATARAZZO CUT HIS TIES WITH THE BODYBUILDING WORLD. HE CHOSE INSTEAD TO CONCENTRATE ON HIS FAMILY, RAISING HIS KIDS AND JUST LIVING HIS LIFE ‘CLEAN.’ AND IN THE END, MATARAZZO WAS SOUR ON OUR SPORT. HE FELT LIKE TAKING STEROIDS AND EATING SEVEN POUNDS OF BEEF A DAY HELPED RUIN HIS LIFE! MAYBE HE WAS RIGHT!!! R.I.P. MIKE MATARAZZO.

PRESENTS: THE PRIEST HOLDS MASS

By Lee Priest

The men’s classic physique division is just another money maker for the NPC and IFBB. It’s just another class for guys who can’t be bodybuilders to fall in to. It’s all a joke and if you have these classes, put them in separate days from bodybuilding. The bodybuilding fans don’t want to see shit GQ models prancing around like wankers. Perhaps the biggest question is when will the NPC/IFBB stop adding classes? We can see it’s all about the money and creating stupid classes for every Tom, Dick and Harry. This new classic physique was meant to bring back the nice lines of Bob Paris, Berry Demey, Frank Zane, Milos Sarcev, Flex Wheeler, Chris Cormier and the like. And, yes, you can still have lots of muscle but have the classic body. What the NPC/IFBB needed to do is fuckin’ judge and make their judges held to account for their shit judging. They have the criteria: SYMMETRY, SIZE, DEFINITION but sadly the first one does not count anymore as we can see by placing pot belly pigs high in the line-ups. Listen, NPC/ IFBB - if this isn’t the body type you like, then why reward it? Why place them high? You’re killing the sport yourselves. Place those types lower and then they’ll learn they need to change their look. These new classes are for all of those who can’t be bodybuilders. They use the same amount of drugs but have shit genetics. Next, will they have just chest and arms classes for guys who just train those body parts? Love how the NPC/IFBB also makes you

10 | MUSCLESPORTMAG.COM

wear their posing trunks now for these classic physique divisions. Let’s make more money off these stooges! Real bodybuilding fans don’t want to see all these other crap classes. If you want to see that, then go to the fucking beach; they are everywhere. The women are a joke with bikini and God knows what else and they’re really just glorified strippers. Sadly, strippers are smarter and making real money. These girls do it for a photo shoot and to stand at a booth for a few hundred bucks and some supplements. NPC/IFBB just judge how you are meant to fuckin’ judge and we would have men and women with muscle looking great and how they should. Oh, no. You just let it all go and judge by God knows what because it sure ain’t judged by what your judging criteria states. But then again in the NPC/IFBB, there is a whole section on drug use and random testing. Mmmm…how the fuck is that working out for you? Will you drug test the Mr. Olympia, Arnold or any pro show? Because using steroids goes against your rules and code of ethics and take it from me, I know what happens when you break the rules. So how many this year will be tested and suspended… since you’re a stickler for the rules?

VALID POINTS Veteran bodybuilder Toney Freeman made some great points in that “Generation Iron” video regarding the seven compulsory poses and the venues. Yes, they are called ‘mandatory poses’ and everyone should do the same pose at the same time. Some twist, go slow, hit it all weird. The NPC/IFBB have respective rule books stating the poses and how to do them but once again, the rules don’t apply. Take the relax pose, for example, with the heels together. Yet people like Branch Warren and some others have their legs wide apart; it’s just stupid. Also, there’s no consistency in the judging. They will place a Warren-style body first then someone like Freeman second and then back to a blocky guy for third. You can’t go from a blocky/fat gut to a symmetrical then back to blocky and so on; it makes no sense. Until the

athletes take a stand, nothing will change. So they need to find their balls and use them. With the venues, some of them are like old bingo halls because promoters just want to save money. If the lighting is bad, then the athletes look bad. Backstage at some of these places, it’s a total joke. It’s funny how these organizations are a non-profit but yet they are all about making money. I laugh about how over here in Australia, they make the athletes pay for an international passport to compete at the Arnold Classic. That’s over 300 competitors all having to pay $40 cash the day of the show or you can’t compete. It’s sad the way the sport is going, but again, until the athletes or the fans take a stand, oh well, just lube up, bend over and keep taking it in the ass.

A group shot of the awesome 5%ers that helped make the entire Arnold Classic (Ohio) weekend an incredible experience and it just seems to get better and better each year. 5% ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT LYDIA FERNANDES

I met Lydia when she competed at the 2015 Arnold Amateur and not too long after that, she joined us as one of the 5% sponsored athletes. At only 25 years of age, she has a great future in this industry and we’re proud to have her on board with us. “Being on the 5% team has opened so many new doors for me and I’m so thankful to be in this group,” says Fernandes. “I began training seriously around three years ago as just a then-one-time thing because a friend of mine suggested it.” But something happened in the gym that day…the same thing that happened to every one reading this article. Fernandes was bit by the bug and was hooked. “I trained 10 months for my first WPD show in New Mexico and won my class, but there was no overall,” she explains. “And then a year later, I placed 11th at the same Arnold Amateur show where I first net Rich.” MUSCLESPORTMAG.COM | 15

Hot Stufnfe Testostero

Potentiator TESTOSTERONE BUILDS MUSCLE One of the most crucial factors for success in the muscle building process is the hormone testosterone. This substance is normally produced in the healthy human body, although its amounts may vary widely between individuals. In fact, its production level can vary widely in the same individuals depending on such specific factors as age, illness, stress, diet, exercise. So important is testosterone to an exercise program that only small variations in serum (blood) levels can mean the difference between strong, well developed muscles or a flabby, smooth appearance.

MANY ATHLETES USE DRUGS TO BOOST TESTOSTERONE Unfortunately, many athletes and weightlifters are resorting to synthetic chemical testosterone sources (anabolic steroids, etc.), to improve their muscle and strength building programs. While significant short term results are undeniable, such practices can lead to serious health complications as well as personality alteration and extreme psychological dependency. For those athletes and weightlifters who do not wish to go the drug route, nutritional science has been relentlessly forging ahead with new and better alternatives. We are pleased to offer you one of the most advanced and powerful natural steroid alternatives – HOT STUFF. This product is a potent hormone igniter containing substances which help stimulate the natural testosterone levels of the body. Each serving of HOT STUFF is jammed packed with 40 grams of high quality whey and milk protein blended together with 6,000 milligrams of key testosterone boosters. THIS IS SOME REAL TALK TO ALL YOU ASPIRING BODYBUILDERS. PEOPLE ASK THEMSELVES, ‘WHY IS BODYBUILDING DYING? WHY IS EVERYONE CROSSING OVER TO MEN’S PHYSIQUE AND CLASSIC PHYSIQUE? WHY IS THE COMPETITIVENESS OF BODYBUILDING DYING?’ No, it’s not because of the fuckin’ drugs; they all take drugs. The two most important things that you need to be a great bodybuilder are genetics and discipline, not boatloads of steroid and HGH injections like many of you believe. Bodybuilding is dying because very few people can deal with pain and suffering…PERIOD. To build legs, you must endure painful workouts with days of wobbling around and being a complete mess doing your everyday activities. I’m the first one to tell you my legs are lacking big time because I’m a big ol’ pussy when it comes to leg day and pushing past the pain. Ninety-nine percent of these little ‘wanna bes’ dropping into these other classes dream of being a freaky bodybuilder. But because they aren’t mentally tough and want the easy way out, they switch to a division where they’ll get rewarded for less pain/dedication/discipline

18 | MUSCLESPORTMAG.COM

so they can post their first place trophy all over social media for recognition. And on top of that, they will bash the way bodybuilders look just because they don’t have what it takes to be a freak.

would have listened to your high school and college professors preaching a 70% carbohydrate diet. In five years, my prediction is bodybuilding at the amateur level will be non-existent and

These guys like to use excuses like: My health/less drugs/ bitches love this look, etc., which are all pure EXCUSES. None of this shit is healthy; if your so worried about health, you

even at the pro level, no one will have contracts big enough to make a living and it’s going to

all go downhill. But that’s the mindset of the new generation; everyone wants to get rewarded for less work. Back in February, I was prepping for a fuckin’ warm-up and it was the hardest thing I’ve EVER endured in my life. But I went to bed every day with a smile on my face because I fuckin’ loved it. I don’t love competitive bodybuilding, but I love the process/daily changes/ experimentation with nutrition and drugs and learning the human body inside and out that competitive bodybuilding brings to the table. So please save us from the bullshit. Promoters want money and they know they’ll get it with the amount of lazy “aspiring bodybuilders” ready to give up for something “more attainable” and just simply a fuckload easier.

BY JOE PIETARO Bravo to all of you out there who have been not only visiting our website regularly, but our social media pages, as well. Our Instagram page has been blowing up and the reason why hasn’t gone unnoticed. All of the likes, comments and reposts by everyone is much appreciated. We have said from the get-go that MSM is much more than just a bodybuilding media outlet, but rather an entire movement that has been nothing like the industry has seen before. And this army standing with us has made that a reality. Thanks!

MONDAY NIGHT MADNESS “Expect the Unexpected’ was our tag line when our podcast was called Xtreme Radio under the Muscular Development banner during our tenure there. But neither Gregg nor myself could have imagined how fucked up this show has become once we didn’t have the shackles of Steve Blechman holding us down. We have been going off on anyone and everyone in the industry, talked politics, race relations and whatever else we felt like discussing. No holds barred radio, for certain.

We view the MSM crew more like an outlaw gang than a group of columnists. Our guys are outspoken and do things the way they choose to, not the politically correct way or how the ‘powers that be’ would prefer. That is akin to the New World Order back in the WCW of the 1990s. When “Hollywood” Hulk Hogan turned heel and was the leader of the rival faction, the nWo turned the wrestling world upside down. CRAIG “GOLIATH” GOLIAS FILLS OUT HIS MASSIVE 6’3”, 325-POUND FRAME – BY JOE PIETARO PHOTOS BY JASON ELLIS

Wedging himself into the vehicle for the ride to the gym, he barely notices the small spot on his shirt from the pre-workout shake that was consumed a few minutes earlier. “I should upgrade to a bigger truck,” he mutters to himself as his massive 6’3”, 325-pound physique seeks comfort in the driver’s seat of the already-spacious Hummer. All of these thoughts slowly fade away as heavy metal blasts through the speakers to make the commute akin to a relief pitcher’s bullpen session. “The loud music gets me hyped up for the gym,” says Craig Golias, who makes this same trek six days per week to a place where he has more than doubled his body weight in a decade. Golias was a much different person as a teenager than he is now. Sure, he was one of the tallest guys in his high school,

one of them was a metal band called Killing is Creation. I was the lead vocalist and a few years later, we actually had a record company interested in signing us. But we eventually broke up.” Although he had been dabbling into the gym life for a couple of years, Golias began to get serious when he was 22, a year after the breakup of the band. He eventually moved

becoming a bodybuilder has a lot to do with genetics. Golias is a perfect example of that because he goes against the grain with a few of the givens, if you will. “I have a very small appetite and am never really hungry,” he admits. “I have four meals and one protein shake a day; that’s it. And I don’t really max out (on lifts) and don’t do deadlifts, either.”

GOLIAS MAKES THE TREK SIX DAYS A WEEK TO THE GYM, A PLACE WHERE HE HAS MORE THAN DOUBLED HIS BODY WEIGHT IN A DECADE but was rail thin at around 150 pounds. And he hadn’t been bit by the weight lifting bug just yet, but rather had his sights set on becoming a rock star. “I was in a bunch of bands back then,” he recalls, “and

from Cleveland, Ohio to sunny California and things began to click for him. A lot of people say that regardless of what else you do,

Perhaps showing a little modesty, Golias is in a YouTube video banging out 20 reps with 405 pounds on the incline bench. So one can only imagine what his ‘one rep max’ would be on it!

I THOUGHT ABOUT COMPETING AGAIN JUST TO PROVE SOMETHING TO MYSELF BUT IN ALL HONESTY, I LOST THE ITCH In 2007, the then-23-year-old entered a local NPC show and and took first place in the super heavyweight division. “The (bodybuilding) bug then bit me hard,” says Golias. “(But) I had no coach and messed up my diet a lot.” More humble statements out of him because Golias placed second (2007 Muscle Beach), fifth (2008 Excalibur) and second again (2009 San Jose) in his next three competitions. He then entered the 2009 NPC USA show and plummeted to 15th place, but had a theory as to why. “My conditioning was pretty good but I lacked size.” A year later, Golias made some improvements and finished second at the Los Angeles show, which propelled him once again into the USA in search of an IFBB pro card. “I took the stage 25 pounds bigger but this time around, I sacrificed some of my conditioning,” the man nicknamed Goliath says, referring to a repeat of his national-level placing. After that, Golias took a few years off from competing and eventually donned the posing trunks one last time. “I really only competed to get in shape for a photo shoot for a company I had started at the time,” comments Goliath, who left on a high note by winning the 2013 Los Angeles Championship. There is a contingent of people in this industry who feel that the world revolves around the competition aspect of bodybuilding. But it is a hell of a lot more than that and a mass monster like Golias realized that the minuses outweighed the plusses by a large margin. “I thought about competing again just to prove something to myself but in all honesty, I lost the itch,” Goliath says matter-of-factly. “I like the massive look and feel that has (gone away) over the years. I always preferred the likes of Paul Dillet and Markus Ruhl… just plain monsters! And it has died down a lot since the early 2000s. “It would be fun to try and bring that mass look back but, like I said, I lost the urge to be miserable all damn day and starve myself,” he continues. “Plus the fact that I have been eating so little food for long that it would make it even harder for me.” Sure. Tell that to the cab of his SUV. Be sure to follow Craig Golias on Instagram @craiggolias

FEMALE BODYBUILDING DOCUMENTARY DELVES DEEP By Joe Pietaro | Photos by Hanna Anerod/Courtesy of Reality Film

Nearly 50 years in the making, Irene Andersen felt that she was ready to take the next step in her career. The IFBB pro had a dream of competing in the industry’s two most prestigious shows – the Ms. Olympia and Ms. International at the Arnold Classic – before she reached that milestone age. But when the 49-year-old mother of three felt that she hit her prime, the IFBB had pulled the rug from under her – and the rest of her sistren - by removing those two shows off their annual calendar due to what was reported as low ticket sales. “We think that it’s just excuses to remove female bodybuilding and it’s not true,” says Renzo Anerod, who, along with his wife Hanna, own Reality Film, a production

company that is releasing “Too Big for the World,” a documentary chronicling Andersen’s quest for answers why her sport has abandoned the women. “After having followed Irene and other female bodybuilders, we know that they have a lot of fans around the world, but they have been successfully invisible. ‘Slow burn,’ as one of the people in the film says.” The film will premiere on August 27 at the Sherry Lansing Theater in Paramount Studios in Hollywood, California before it will head on an autumn tour throughout the United States. (Information on screenings will be available on www.toobigfortheworld. com.) It will include not

only how the industry has turned their collective backs on female bodybuilding, but also society’s discrimination and ‘their fear of strong and muscular women.’ The IFBB had been dropping hints for quite some time that it was not fully behind female bodybuilding. Just go back a few years with the 20 percent rule that was never really enforced and the judges allowed the sizes of the rewarded competitors to grow year after year. They created the problem and did nothing to rectify it. “We feel that there has been a hypocrisy and double messages that had been spread among the competitors,” says Anerod. “That the women should downsize and look more feminine, but the judges (continued) to reward muscle mass. And then they tell the women that they have gotten too big and remove them. “We see it as an enormous betrayal and abuse of power against these athletes that have been dedicated to this sport for decades.” What makes it even harder to swallow is the fact that so many new categories have been introduced (MPD, WPD, classic physique) since female bodybuilding’s dates were seriously diminished. But the women themselves that

FEMALE BODYBUILDERS DON’T HAVE ANYTHING AGAINST MPD, WPD && CLASSIC PHYSIQUE, BUT WHEN IT HAPPENS AT THEIR EXPENSE, IT’S LIKE A KICK IN THE STOMACH have been frozen out have not taken it personally… to a point. “Our experience is that female bodybuilders don’t have anything against the other divisions or that new ones have been added, but when it happens at the expense of (their division), it’s clear that it comes as a kick in the stomach,” Anerod says with emphasis. One show that has taken the stick, if you will, with female bodybuilding is the Wings of Strength Rising Phoenix, which has become the de-facto re-

placement for the Ms. Olympia. “We see (them) as heroes that lift up female bodybuilding in a way that has never been seen before,” comments Anerod. “We love what they do and Irene will, of course, compete at the Rising Phoenix show this year.” Being around so many of these great athletes making this film gave the Anerods a lot of new knowledge about them. But there was one common trait that all of them possessed. “Independence,” Hanna Anerod says without hesitation. “Most of them

are strong individuals and go their own way. To be a female bodybuilder demands an enormous amount of strength to go against what society sees as ‘female.’ We’re very impressed by all female bodybuilders who have the courage to challenge this norm no matter where they live in the world. Many of them see bodybuilding as a lifestyle and a sport and not as a beauty contest.” And, as Irene Andersen found out, that’s a lot more important than any stage.

At last year’s 2015 Arnold Classic, Arnold Schwarzenegger himself spoke out harshly over the contest’s final placements. Arnold had long expressed his dissatisfaction with the lack of symmetry shown by the competitors, specifically how the athletes’ midsections had vastly expanded since his own competitive years of the 1970s. He favored Cedric McMillan, who with a very aesthetic, symmetrical look, only placed fourth at the 2015 show. Schwarzenegger’s derogatory comments came immediately following the bestowing of his “Lifetime Achievement Award” to the very man who bore responsibility for Schwarzenegger’s judging headaches: Jim Manion, the president of the IFBB Pro League, the vice president of IFBB North America and the president of the National Physique Committee (NPC). One year later at the recent 2016 Arnold

38 | MUSCLESPORTMAG.COM

Classic, Schwarzenegger received at least some satisfaction, as Cedric McMillan moved to second place behind winner Kai Greene. McMillan was actually leading Greene after the first round, but Greene managed to harden his look later in the event and once again symmetry fell to muscularity. More interesting, however, the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award winner, IFBB President Rafael Santonja, was joined by last year’s winner Manion in being served notice for a federal anti-trust lawsuit. The lawsuit was actually filed by former NPC judge and chairman of Texas, Lee Thompson. Thompson is a retired successful oilman who resigned from the NPC on September 14, 2015, the day he launched his own NPC Global organization. Thompson quickly found himself at odds with the NPC on numerous fronts, including name infringement which forced him

to change his organization to NSpire Sports League LLC (NSL). Nonetheless, bigger problems came when Thompson felt that the NPC was violating the Amateur Sports Act of 1978 by interfering with athlete participation for NSL’s December 12, 2015 Space City Championships. This led to a multi-faceted lawsuit launched by NSL against the NPC on November 5, 2015. Two days later, your MuscleSport Magazine founding editor Joe Pietaro reported on the strong language used by Thompson and company against the NPC when he shared allegations such as, “extortion, coercion, intimidation, assault, battery, fraud, fraudulent inducement, tortious interference and duress.” Further claims against the NPC were on contest rigging, interference with athletes to compete freely, industry sponsor manipulation and tax fraud violations on NPC’s tax

exempt status. On November 14, 2015, NSL and the NPC supposedly settled the lawsuit wherein NPC President Manion issued a statement indicating that there would be no interference by the NPC on athletes wishing to compete in any NSL events. The NPC had been sued previously for this very infraction back in 1982 by the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). Regardless, the clashing continued and Thompson felt his November 14th settlement was breached by NPC officials and thus NSL refiled their lawsuit in a federal court of Southern Pennsylvania in January of 2016. Compounding this retaliation, Thompson and company filed an additional federal anti-trust suit in the state of Virginia against both the NPC and the IFBB. It was this latter suit for which Manion of the NPC and Santonja of the IFBB were served notice on March 4, 2016 at the Arnold Classic.

Is this really anything new under the sun? Any veteran of the Iron Game knows that the muscle industry has been plagued with personal lawsuits over the past 75 years. We have seen Bob Hoffman sue Joe Weider, Weider sue Hoffman, Dan Lurie sue Weider, Weider sue Lurie, Ferrigno and Schwarzenegger sue Lurie, the AAU sue the NPC and a myriad of other suits. However, NSL’s anti-trust suit against the IFBB and NPC is perhaps the most serious threat to the muscle monopoly that we have seen to date. Modern bodybuilding has seen basically three eras of dictatorial rule with overlapping demagogues dating back to July 4 of 1939 in Chicago, Illinois when the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) ran a physique show alongside its Senior National Weightlifting Championships.

Since 1888, the AAU governed over much of the fields of amateur athletics in America, including weightlifting, beginning in 1928. Bob Hoffman of York, Pennsylvania leveraged a successful oil burner business through the depression years of the 1930s to grow as the patriarch of American weightlifting. Using his business resources, Hoffman manufactured barbells, coached his own York-based weightlifting team, acquired competition assets and began his own publication in 1932 called Strength and Health, a media platform utilized to bolster his position within the Iron Game industry and, of course, to market its wares. By the 1940s, Hoffman had pretty much monopolized the Iron Game economy and was by then a powerful influence within the weightlifting faction of the AAU. Although a good number of the early AAU bodybuilders were also weightlifters, Hoffman exhibited MUSCLESPORTMAG.COM | 39

very little respect for bodybuilding. However, bodybuilders purchased barbells, magazines and courses. Thus, Hoffman felt it financially strategic to control bodybuilding and its athletes through the weightlifting committee of the AAU. With accusations pointing at Hoffman nudging Mr. America victories towards bodybuilders with a weightlifting background as often as feasible, it was inevitable that other budding entrepreneurs would attempt the launch of alternative organizations. Hoffman’s advantage over any potential threat from a rival federation was his close association with the AAU and its existing nationwide infrastructure making it pretty much the only game in any town for amateur competition. Any athlete attempting to compete outside of AAU sanctioning would risk losing their amateur status. Hoffman and his York-based operations enjoyed a tight lock on American amateur bodybuilding for almost 40 years under this atmosphere. This monopoly was never really challenged until 1940 when Joe Weider launched his own magazine, Your Physique. Joe was joined by young-

Fueled by competition and polar ideologies, the Hoffman/Weider feud fired up through the 1950s with enough slander to land both parties in court several times. Joe Weider’s former partner, Dan Lurie, would join them on all fronts (publishing, governing and lawsuits) when he launched his own organization, World Bodybuilding Guild (WBBG) in 1965, followed by his magazine, Muscle Training Illustrated in early 1967. Regardless, Hoffman’s York gang was still the big dog in the yard with their influence over the AAU Weightlifting Committee, which also still controlled American bodybuilding. Hoffman’s iron grip on York’s near 40-year-reign was finally broken through the 1970s due to his age, the Amateur Sports Act of 1978 and a few catalytic industry players. In 1968, the general secretary of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) informed Ben Weider that the IWF was going to drop its sanctioning over international amateur bodybuilding. The IFBB was also an international governing body, but they held little power at that level of the sport in the late 1960s. Oscar State had taken a liking

regulations. State was also responsible for bringing an already existing global structure of countries from the IWF to the IFBB. With all these facets moving into position within a viable constitution, the IFBB held their first official congress of affiliated national federations in 1970 in Belgrade, Yugoslavia and elected Ben Weider as their president. Even with its new international status via State, the York controlled AAU Weightlifting Committee in America still refused to recognize the IFBB and refused to affiliate itself with anything involving the Weiders. However, State would lead the Weiders and their IFBB into the 1970s, where timing and climate could not have been any better for change. The Amateur Sports Act of 1978 broke up the AAU’s stronghold over American amateur sports, thus bodybuilding was finally liberated from its weightlifting overlords of the previous decades. The amateur bodybuilders were also then free to compete wherever they chose without penalty. The AAU remnant for bodybuilding

THE 2016 LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD WINNER, IFBB PRESIDENT RAFAEL SANTOJA, WAS JOINED BY LAST YEAR’S WINNER JIM MANION IN BEING SERVED NOTICE FOR A FEDERAL ANTI-TRUST LAWSUIT er brother Ben in 1945 when they launched their second publication, Muscle Power, later that year. With the help of veterans George Jowett and Emmanuel Orlick, the Weiders rolled out their International Federation of Body Builders (IFBB) through the latter 1940s. The early IFBB was no threat to the vast nationwide structure of the AAU, but with their two publications, Joe and Ben Weider definitely began cutting into Hoffman’s muscle market. 40 | MUSCLESPORTMAG.COM

to Ben years earlier and was giving the Weiders a golden opportunity to take real control of the sport worldwide. He encouraged Ben to get his fledging organization in legal order. State’s myriad of officiating and administrative skills were instrumental in creating the appropriate federation profile that entailed a democratic election of a board of directors, the establishment of a code of ethics and a sound list of rules and

evolved into its own autonomous governing body that settled as the National Physique Committee (NPC). Freed from the anti-Weider York gang, there was far less interference for the NPC (now fully in charge of American amateur bodybuilding) to accept, affiliate and coordinate with the international authority for the sport, the IFBB. It was the intellect, guile and tactical savvy of Ken Sprague that was instrumental in this affiliation and transition of power from York to the Weiders in the late 1970s. He was the mechanic who installed Manion to the Chairmanship of the newly forming NPC in 1977 and the one who stuffed the ballot box in 1978 to keep Manion in office. By the dawning of the 1980s, the Weiders had finally grown into the new bullies on the block. Sprague had departed, Allen Dalfen had restructured the Weider industries and Wayne DeMilia had established himself and was fully qualified in taking over for Sprague as head IFBB mechanic. The Weiders had intertwined their industries into serious conflicts of interest with their tax exempt international governing body, the IFBB. With Manion running the inherited AAU/NPC nationwide amateur infrastruc-

42 | MUSCLESPORTMAG.COM

ture now totally affiliated with the IFBB and DeMilia rebuilding their professional component, Ben and Joe Weider gained their monopoly over an enormous chunk of the bodybuilding economy worldwide. Through the 1980s and 1990s, Ben and Joe would amass hundreds of millions of dollars from their leveraged industries and give very little back to the IFBB. DeMilia grew tired of this environment, and after years of butting heads with Ben Weider, due to extreme ideological differences, Wayne would depart the IFBB in 2004. This was a significant loss to the IFBB and the tumultuous relationship between DeMilia and the Weiders is a fascinating, never-told-story, that will be exposed over the next couple of years. Regardless, Manion would take over the professional component, thus creating yet more conflicting interests as he was then already head of the American amateurs with the NPC and now taking control of the professionals of the NPC’s international governing body, the IFBB! Through the 2000s, competitive bodybuilding would change dramatically in presentation, categorization and especially administration. With this evolution came a change in demographics both in the competitor lineups and those seated in attendance, thus significantly changing the audience-to-competitor ratio as well. Behind the scenes accusations of contest fixing, competitor coercion and sponsor manipulation were intensifying more so than ever heard in past years.

Joining the NPC in 2002, rising to the NPC chairmanship of Texas in 2004 and IFBB Pro League judging in 2006, Thompson would get his fill of this contaminated environment by 2015 when he left it all to establish his own organization in September of that year. As noted above, it did not take long for the backlash from the powers that be which forced Thompson to launch his first lawsuit on November 5th of 2015 due to NPC officials interfering with the amateur athletes wanting to compete in Thompson’s newly formed NSpire Sports League. When a settlement for the lawsuit was breached, he refiled early in 2016 then followed with an anti-trust suit aimed at both the NPC and IFBB. It should be an interesting 2016, as this is no doubt the most serious legal threat ever confronting any of the Iron Game monopoly holders over the previous 100 years. Will the 49-year-old retired oilman, secure in his financial and social status, be able to ignore the massive greed and control allures that have plagued the industry’s former demagogues and finally offer bodybuilders a legal and fair playing ground? Stay tuned with MuscleSport Magazine! Randy Roach is the author of the “Muscle, Smoke & Mirrors” history series and co-host along with Tamas Acs of their weekly podcast. BE YOUR OWN BRAND

Today’s Bodybuilding/Fitness Media Personalities BY JERRY WARD

Bodybuilding, fitness and physique has taken a new turn in 2016. No longer is it only about looking good and competing, but it’s also about social media. You can build your body, but NOW make it a brand and all on your own by building these different social media apps and getting a following. It’s now about who you are perceived to be rather than what you look like on one day onstage. In this day and age, you have to be something more than a pretty face and set of abs; you need to be individual. So we now have many people in the media that just about everyone can relate to - Rich Piana, Chris Jones and Matt Ogus to name a few. Then there are the anti-heroes, the people that most love to hate. Sure they have their own following, but those people are not in fitness and bodybuilding. They are into, well.... other things. People like Vegan Gains and someone I recently had a falling out, with former friend Jason Blaha. The pull to social media and making money from it can be pretty interesting. A lot of money to be made, careers to be made, all based on reputation and perception. And people can bend that in different ways. My way? It’s to be honest, upfront and straight forward. And people can relate to and respect that even if they 46 | MUSCLESPORTMAG.COM

10 YEARS AGO, JASON BLAHA WOULD HAVE BEEN A LAUGHING STOCK – A FAT, BALDING, HEAVY-BREATHING FITNESS ‘EXPERT’

THEN THERE ARE THE ANTI-HEROES LIKE VEGAN GAINS AND JASON BLAHA, WHO HAVE THEIR OWN FOLLOWING OF PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT INTO FITNESS AND BODYBUILDING don’t agree. That’s why Donald Trump has so many supporters. Even though when he started, I was like, ‘No way will people back him.’ But he says the truth and what others are thinking and doesn’t care what anyone thinks - pretty much just like me. Blaha is not as interesting as the rest of us…by a long shot. So he lies and makes up things about his past like he was trained in the CIA, did tours in Operation Desert Storm even though he was never in the military and killed people for his country. Now he is disabled by definition even though he competes in powerlifting and has some big lifts. Lies. All lies, but he can bend and spin things to his liking to get people to follow and think, “Holy shit, this guy is cool.” Ten years ago, he would have been a laughing stock. A fat, balding, heavybreathing fitness expert who would have

no following. But with the magic of social media, lies and building the character he plays, he now has a following and makes money. Who knows what the future holds for the fitness and bodybuilding industry, but the Internet is part of it and seems like social media is going to be a part of it, as well. I’m still learning about this stuff and trying to keep up as best I can with the different apps. So see you on Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube! Let’s roll back in history to a time before the Anabolic Doc and I’ll tell you the tale of how this whole thing happened. In 2005, I graduated from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, Internal Medicine residency training program and opened up my own old school primary care medical practice.

50 | MUSCLESPORTMAG.COM

During this time, men who were on anabolic steroids were coming to see me. Initially, I was like many other doctors intimidated and scared. Guys heard that I was a doc and also a “lifter,” so they came. After years of successfully caring for men on steroids, I decided to create a division just for people “using steroids.” I was able to listen to their health concerns and realized that these guys came to see me for an alternative to steroids and wanted advice from a real medical expert. They did not want “juice” from me, rather they desired advise on how to get off anabolic steroids and still feel okay with their sex drive and wanted answers to what years of anabolics have done to their bodies. The hell with the thought that “steroid-users” have a death wish! One night, after a glass of red wine and searching Go Daddy for 30 minutes, I found that www.anabolicdoc.com was open for $12.00. I was going to be the first doc in America ready to care for people who are using anabolic steroids. Next, I decided to put an ad in. It said, “Keep lifting as HEAVY as possible, as HEALTHY as possible, for as LONG as possible.” The phones started ringing off the hook! Who knew that men on steroids

Muscular Development was supposed to be about ‘No BS,’ but they were all about money & not truly for their readers actually cared about their health! Guys were coming in from Texas to see me! Yeah Buddy! Then, after less than six months, I received a call from Steve Blechman, owner of Muscular Development magazine. He said that if I was for real, he would give me my own monthly column called, The Anabolic Doc. The last thing he said was, “If you can actually write a column that my readers like, you’re hired.” The Anabolic Doc column lived for almost three years till at last, I pissed off Mr. Blechman’s advertisers. MD was supposed to be about “No BS”, but like the real BS in life, MD was all about money and not truly for its readers. So in June 2012, the Anabolic Doc was fired. Thank you Mr. Blechman for the

opportunity you gave me! Since this time, I have seen thousands of men on steroids. I have made many medical discoveries that I want to share with the world. It is unfortunate that still today, most physicians do not understand anabolic steroid use and how important it is to NOT turn these men and women away, but to take them in like we do any other person/patient suffering with using an agent that may hurt them. After all, we openly take care of alcoholics, smokers, obese, HIV (+)/AIDS, hepatitis B and C positive, heroin and meth users. We, as healers have taken an oath to respect “all” patients and do our best to provide ethical medical care. What the hell happened to the steroid user?

It is absolutely crazy that there are at least four million “active” steroid users currently in America and the average doctor does not know TRT vs steroids or what D-bol is! My fellow docs are brilliant, caring and in my opinion ready to learn about how to heal patients on steroids. We need to give them a chance. Maybe it’s because of medical marijuana or just the right time, but the time is now for anabolic steroid education and for people using anabolic agents to reach out to their health care providers. My goal is to bring attention to the dangerous medical issues associated with anabolic steroid use and provide alternatives to steroids! When I wrote for MD, I was a MUSCLESPORTMAG.COM | 51

It is crazy that there are at least 4 million active steroid users in the US and the average doctor doesn’t know TRT vs. steroids or what D-bol is badass for sure and my style was like a “steel-toe boot” tearing through your front teeth. I’ve mellowed out with age, but don’t think my articles will be boring! I will write as I do from the heart and tell it as it is and what I think. Political correctness is not my style or how I roll! I’m back and more pissed off than ever! The fact that people using steroids have to go to the internet and get medical advice from “BroScientists” is completely insane! Now, by no means does this mean I am giving a “blessing” on anabolic steroid use! As a matter of fact, I want to teach that anabolic steroids can be very dangerous and that we need to protect people from using these agents. We need to educate the world about the true nature of what these 52 | MUSCLESPORTMAG.COM

“medical” agents are all about. Forget the MLB pro, I’m focusing my career on the average Joe who uses steroids for personal use and wishes he knew more before he started. The most important group we need to keep off of steroids is our children. Unfortunately, teenagers are one of the fastest growing groups of new anabolic steroid users. This has to be addressed! One thing that many steroid users tell me is that they regret starting steroids as a “naïve” user. This is what I would like to prevent or at least provide education on. You can expect to see articles from me regarding how anabolic steroids cause medical disease, how they shut down a man’s natural testosterone level (despite PCT),

a real medical condition called Anabolic Steroid Induced Hypogonadism (ASIH), how steroids can cause heart disease, kidney and liver disease, depression, sexual issues and prostate issues. I am the medical expert on anabolic steroids and will discuss how these drugs work on everyday people and why they use them. I will conduct anonymous interviews with steroid users, asking them questions regarding medical issues they have experienced and explain my management rationale. No doctor has ever done this! It’s time to heal through education. Strap in folks, the Anabolic Doc is back!! Stay Strong and Healthy. Dr. O Be sure to visit the Anabolic Doc’s website, www.anabolicdoc.com.

WHEN JESSICA HOPKINS FIRST SUITED UP IN SEATTLE MIST GREEN SIX YEARS AGO, THE THENLINGERIE FOOTBALL LEAGUE WAS IN ITS SECOND SEASON AND IN A TRANSITION YEAR, OF SORTS. BORN OUT OF THE SUPER BOWL PAY-PER-VIEW HALFTIME LINGERIE BOWL, THE NEW LEAGUE WAS STILL LOOKING FOR AN IDENTITY. “That first year, the LFL drew more of a model type and the league was more focused on the looks and the body, with the athletic skill being almost secondary,” recalls Hopkins. “So a lot of the girls were pretty and fit 58 | MUSCLESPORTMAG.COM

but not necessarily what I would constitute as (being) a football player.” Now in its seventh season, the league has been rebranded as the Legends Football League (since 2013), modified the uniforms,

gone global and had its own reality television show. A major component of that has been the caliber of athletes coming on board. “We are drawing girls who played sports at a very high level and are looking for that next thing to compete in,” comments Hopkins.

SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE

Before joining the Mist, Hopkins was a figure competitor in the NPC and placed second (2010 Vancouver Classic) and fifth (2010 Emerald Cup), qualifying for the nationals. But she decided to forego that for the gridiron. And that has been an excellent choice. Perusing her on-field accomplishments, the wide receiver/free safety has been one of the steadier players in the LFL and a mainstay on her hometown Mist. She has been a team captain since Day One, won

the 2011 Commissioner’s Award in only her second season, is a three-time winner of the Team Leadership Award, nominated for the Top-3 Wide Receivers of All Time Award, a two-time Pacific Cup Champion, 2015 LFL Champions and 2015 Hall of Fame nominee. She was nominated for the LFL Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2015. Hopkins also was nominated for the MVP Award and Defensive Player of the Year Canada Award in 2012 in her one season playing for the British Columbia Angels in 2012 in LFL Canada.

THE INTIMATE RECEPTION

Once the ‘lingerie’ moniker was changed, the uniform underwent a few adjustments to reflect that. Gone were the garters, lace and choker and the shorts were altered. “I didn’t mind any of the uniforms but I was personally more comfortable with the boy

H short bottoms we used to wear than the current bikini cut ones,” the two-way player admits. “But the garter was definitely an annoyance while playing, as I was always adjusting it (once) it slid down my leg after running or making a tackle. I’m excited about our new uniforms by Sleef. They are filthy!” ‘Uniform malfunctions’ are not exactly uncommon and Hopkins has witnessed quite a few and even experienced one of her own. “It’s bound to happen when you are just trying to tackle someone and you grab what you can,” she says. “Sometimes you end up grabbing someone’s bottom or top. There are penalties if it appears intentional but for the most part, it’s incidental and we are just trying to make a play.”

Network and Hopkins viewed that as an overwhelming positive. “I think that anytime you can get on television, it’s a good thing as it’s going to bring more attention

and awareness to our league.” Yes, the women are incredibly sexy and are great athletes, as well. But there’s more than

that, according to Hopkins. “I truly believe that every girl in the league is sexy…not just

by how she looks but because of WHO she is,” she concludes. “We are mothers, daughters, sisters, teachers, nurses, military personnel, trainers, role models, leaders and athletes. We are driven focused, determined and intelligent women that go after our dreams and refuse to give up until we’ve reached them. “And THAT to me is SEXY.”

MSM has always supported female

bodybuilding and we showed that with this Heather Armbrust cover for our third ever issue. We also had a feature article on the New York Yankees, a back training piece, Dan Lurie in our ‘Vintage Muscle’ column and more. Even in its infancy, MSM showed that we would always think out of the box and not be a follower in the industry.
