New Era is here to enlighten, entertain and explore the young Zambian’s potential for all rounded success. It is our platform to incite conversations amongst young people as well as dismantle some of the mask notions society has labelled on the youths. As New Era, our promise is to remain true to you and stay dedicated to providing you with the resources and information to help you achieve holistic success with nothing missing so you love the life you live. In this issue of New Era, it is comforting to know that young people are taking economic and social development in their own hands and are making acts of deliberate conscious to solve some of our country’s many problems through entrepreneurship. They are marrying purpose with profits- a global trend and new business model approach through which creation of jobs for each other is taking place and profits are made whilst still making a positive impact in their communities. On the cover we feature Pompi a talented artist who has brought creative vision and solid business acumen by taking advantage of cyber space and has created Kokoliko a systems development program that helps people find jobs easily just at a click of a button! u yando Haangala is a beautiful, daring and different young influence. She is the brand that organisations eagerly want to identify with due to her consistent assertion of integrity of purpose and vision especially against the slaves of the ordinary- She is uncommon. Therefore it is no wonder that even the likes of USA President Barack Obama deem her fit to be among Obama’s Young African leaders. We get up and close with this young smart diva and get all the scoop on her special appointment. New Era: What is the Obama African Leaders Initiative all about and on what criteria where you selected as one of the young Leaders? Luyando: In order to build a new breed of young leaders in Africa, US President Barack Obama came up with the Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative 2014 when he visited Africa.
I believe this experience will help grow my mind as well as strengthen my current mentorship programs and media outreach For this initiative, they were looking for young people between 25 years and 30 who were already doing something in their communities in various fields such as business and civic leadership among others. I decided to apply for civic leadership and the application was quiet long. After the application there was a short list of people they called for interview and there I shared some of the things that I have been working on and thank God I was accepted! It’s a 6 week program at the University of Virginia and I get a chance to meet President Obama and his senior advisors. Apart from this I also got a further placement in their 8 weeks internship program. I really feel blessed to have been accorded this opportunity.

New Era: How do you intend to share this learning experience with young people back home? Luyando: I have mentorship programs I have been working on and I believe this experience will help grow my mind as well as strengthen my current mentorship programs and media outreach. It will also allow me the chance to meet great minds in media and mentorship and I will enable me to create a program back home that will be long lasting and will not just be about Lulu. New Era: You seem unwavering despite what life throws at you, how do you stay your eyes on the prize? Luyando: Yep life is not without its challenges! My two hashtags #letGodlead# and #wekeepmoving# I live by that. When life throws a curve ball at me I fall down, I stand up, shake up and I keep moving forward so God has really been a leading factor in my life and without him I wouldn’t be where I am today. I also have a great support system in my family and the few friends I have who keep encouraging me when I am low, I do get my low moments but I have learnt not to dwell on the low moments of life but to see what can be done about what is going right because low moments will always be there but don’t let them define you, choose to focus on the good things that are working.
My five success principles are 1. Stay humble, 2. Work hard, pray hard and play hard 3. Keep focused 4. Love those that support you like your family, friends and fans New Era Youth Mag

e is our very own home grown talent locally and internationally celebrated for his soulful African vibes audibly caught through his music and visually seen in his spirited performances. This Safaricom Groove 2014 award winner for Southern Africa artiste of the year and two times ZAMA Best Gospel Artist winner is onto bigger things, pioneering a group of companies aimed to solve Africa’s problems. We put Chaka Nyathando aka Pompi- the brains behind the systems development companies Atmosphere and Kokoliko on the spot and drew depths of inspiration. New Era: Who is Pompi? Pompi: I would describe myself as a passionate teacher who uses music as a medium. I am a lover of Art, design and honesty even though being honest can at times be really painful. I desire to be inspirational and strive to build a brand as a pioneer in most of my works because Africa lacks pioneers New Era: You remain consistent in who you are, how do you stay authentic? Pompi: The instruction when I got saved was for me to be honest. I am not afraid to speak my weaknesses because I believe church is a place of confession. I like truth because even when you are weak and confess it people tend to feel sorry for you and are moved to help you unlike pretending. New Era: What inspired you to start your own Music Label-Lota House? Pompi: I had a series of dreams emphasizing my purpose which was to see Africa come back to God and be saved. That is why l called my record label Lota which is a Nyanja word for dreams. My mission is to go into the

darkness with my light. Initially I started off alone and later Abel Chungu, Magnus and Tio joined because they too identified with the vision. New Era: What do you look for before signing an Artist to your label? Pompi: The Artist must be certain that music is their calling and must show unwavering passion, strong will and must be rooted in who they are because the world will shake them but they must not be moved. Another element is that they must come in with a “mission over reputation attitude” so if you are in this gospel industry to save reputation then it is not for you. Jesus Christ perfect in love died a criminal death so who are you to maintain a reputation? So one must be willing to sacrifice their reputation so people get saved and shouldn’t be afraid to preach to the darkness.

POMPI - THE BUSINESS MAN New Era: What is your brain child companyAtmosphere all about? Pompi: Atmosphere is a mass communication company that aims to communicate the gospel in a very strategic way. We are using various avenues as mediums of Atmosphere for example we have Kokoliko as one of those arms of atmosphere. Kokoliko is a solution that exists to provide jobs online, for instance if someone wants
New Era: What kind of woman gets your attention? Pompi: One who fears God and understands what it is God has called her for. One who I will consider a partner where we can drive and exchange in the driving together, we must be on the same road with regards to vision. New Era: Have you found her yet? Pompi: I do have a girlfriend and so far so good.

If platforms are not going to provide us the space, we are going to create our own space.
New Era: You are a Graduate in Business systems Development. Why is it important for one to have an education despite having great talent? Pompi: Education has taught me structure and process and as an artist It has also helped me research as I write my songs. Systems development has helped me structure my day, time, tasks and deadlines, these lessons are small but do a lot for my businesses. School also helps you have an understanding of how the world works. I am passionate about education that is why I am currently helping kids go to school. School is man qualifying you but your gift is God qualifying you, school may help sharpen your gift but God gives the ultimate gift.
New Era: What is your leadership style?
New Era: What has been your biggest career highlight?
Pompi: My leadership style is target based. I don’t say how it should be done. I just define what and when I want it done, that way people are more creative and exercise their innovation. New Era: What is the one characteristic every leader must have? Pompi: I know it sounds cheesy and cliché but I must say discipline. It is something I am also working towards. Life has so many nice things calling you but you have to sacrifice in order to get the desired results. New Era: Who has the most significant influence in shaping you as a Leader? Pompi: I would say my Dad because he is a man of his word and is very careful with what he says because it becomes a contract. I have seen him live up to all his promises. When I was younger I thought it was because of old age hence the seriousness but now I understand that this great quality should be a part of every leader’s character. Success requires discipline and discipline needs sacrifice and the challenge is making those sacrifices, for example some of the things pressed on my heart to do is sponsoring kids
Things you didn’t know about Pompi 1. I am an introvert. I am actually very shy but obviously when it comes to doing my calling things change. I am fearless on stage when it’s about music but anything outside this element exposes that I am a wreck on stage. 2. I am a Business Systems Honours Graduate. 3. I have a company called Atmosphere which is involved in systems development projects. 4. I have gained a reputation as being difficult with my music with regards to sound I am very particular about excellence. I believe when you are giving a gift to God it must be wrapped up really well. I have turned down certain Christian events because I didn’t believe that stage honours God with regards to excellence.
Pompi: My biggest career highlight: hmmm (Long pose)… God has done a lot. I would say Uganda at the fat feast were 10,000 people were singing along to my music despite them not knowing the language. I felt honoured by the experience and the reception was unforgettable. We had police escort from the airport and sharing a stage with American Gospel hip hop superstar Sho Baraka was amazing. 4000 people gave their lives to Jesus that day. Another highlight for me was winning the Safaricom Groove 2014 award as Southern Africa artiste of the year. New Era: How would you guide a young person that strives to be like you? Pompi: I would encourage them to locate their gifting and stick with it. God can’t give you a fruit that will not be consumed, people will surely come and pluck from your tree. I am a business developer but I never thought that music was the fruit that I had to offer to the world that would bring me before kings but the same one that I sulad (looked down on) is the one that did it for me, not the one I anticipated. Also be unique and unusual because you are no ordinary being. New Era: What is your ultimate ambition? Pompi: My ultimate ambition is to be a media powerhouse that begins to decide the culture and the trends for my generation. I am also currently writing my next album so expect something this September. New Era Youth Mag

We take an exclusive sneak into the world of the gorgeous Abel Chungu Musuka New Era: How would you describe Abel Chungu Musuka? Abel: I am just an ordinary guy who encountered an extra ordinary God. New Era: How would you describe your music? Abel: I don’t have a genre for it, I know its gospel. I sometimes like to experiment with electric, rock, Reggae, RnB as long as it all just comes together and sounds right. There was so much of a box when I was coming up and people discover I am good at something

and encourage me to stay in it, they would say “Abel you are worshiper” but I believe worship is not a genre of music it is all about drawing peoples hurts to God. New Era: It evident that you are passionate about this generation, what is God’s heart towards young people? Abel: Like Jesus said let the children come to me, for such is the kingdom of God. There is so much neglect on young people in this generation. Long ago in bible times the Jews would be considered adults at 17, but in our culture we keep extending that line, delaying that maturity hence at 22 adults would still be telling young people you are still young and as a result even the mentorship process is delayed and the young people turn out to be poor decision makers. Young people act immature because they are taught immaturely. Young people have a great place in the heart of God they have so much energy and if mentored well its revival to a nation. They are dying to break out and be heard that’s why they seem rebellious but if we applied the wisdom of the old and
divert that energy there would be so much self-development that contributes to national development. New Era: Right now you are the artist with sold out concerts of over 2000 people in attendance and gates close like in the days of Noah, how do you do that? Abel: God does it for me. I picked a big venue for both albums- Miracle life a 2000 seater. Another element is great social media, radio push and great quality music that people enjoy and are proud to bring their friend. New Era: : What was the inspiration behind love unleashed? Abel: Love unleashed was inspired in when I was in the US in 2012. I went for a concert and whilst there Marlon, a friend of mine took me out to buy something in the store. There was a rough looking Latino in front of me in the line who was buying a big bottle of Vodka and after he went out I followed him and I asked if I could talk to him and he

Something spoke to me that night in camp and as we were in worship the song came….we cry for more our hearts cry for more. You see, the love of God has been shed upon our hearts but we have a decision to be available and pour out his love so I was inspired by love unleashed on that day. New Era: When can one start Evangelising? Abel: I think the moment you have a testimony. You don’t have to be years in bible school to evangelize. They overcame him by the blood of the lamb and the word of their testimony New Era: Why do you go sing and preach in night clubs and places deemed “unsuitable” for Christians? Abel: For us at Lota house we are people driven, reaching out with something different, vibrant and fresh, our mission is for the lost. People are so concerned about what is happening in the church and are forgetting lost people out there need to hear the gospel. The church is more concerned about preserving something that we have no control over. New Era: What is your ultimate ambition? Abel: My final biggest goal is to do a concert
in China with 1 million Chinese people worshipping God. I am always waiting on the day that China receives the gospel and freely accept God. That is why I wrote “Lets have church” it’s a hungry declaration that you can’t stop us. One thing I like about music is they can’t stop us, if I go there as a preacher they may be like no but music breaks through the strongest barrier.

New Era: You are a good looking young man, you could have been anything else why did you chose to be a Pastor? Abel: Funny thing is I don’t use the term Pastor I use my name because being a Pastor is a calling of grace it doesn’t make any one any super special, it doesn’t mean you have no flaws, I think it’s a cool job, others may make it superficial but at the end of the day we are just servants. I am hosting a new TV show coming out soon and I would really also love to pursue an acting career. I would love to break into movies not just gospel movies, I also do standup comedy in my spare time and I think I am really funny. New Era: Tell us about Zarina, how did you know she was the one? Abel: She is very pretty that’s how! I also saw visions of her before I even met her and when I would see her I become useless around her but later I gained confidence and made her join the youth group I was helping led at the time and from then on I have never set my eyes off her. New Era: And being a Young father, how has that changed you Abel: Hmm it has made me more responsible and I look forward to my future. Everything that I really want is to leave something for him, I just want to create a much better future for him. I wrote “say hello to the bad guy” track 13 it talks about homosexuality because I
How do you perfect your craft? 1. I don’t put my mind or gift in a box.I know I am not the best singer in the world but I want my voice to be the best at what it does so am not gonna try do runs like boys to men, I do myself the best of me. One of my biggest motivations when doing new songs is to sit down and watch Trace, Mtv and other secular music with the perspective of learning how these guys influence masses so I ask how do I counteract so young people put the junk down and say they want to listen to my music. I also did some vocal coaching in the states to help me improve my skill. I have lots of critics in my brother Musuka, my Producer Ian and a few others. 3. Never put a limit on what God is doing. Never be intimidated. When Emely Sunday was here she sang and asked if anyone wanted to sing I quickly grabbed the mic and sang and now we are good friends.

The controversy of the Casket incident New Era: why did you do such a disturbing act that brought such controversy? Ruff Kaida: It is according to the song I did it is track number 4 on my album called nikamisiya which means when I leave you how will I be remembered. New Era: Don’t you think that you lying in a casket was an extreme display of the message in the song Ruff Kaida: Being the artist I am, I wanted to bring reality to the song and make it real because it talks about when I die so I thought by doing so it would be a step ahead in making it real. Death is a fact to me, my songs are about truth. No one is going to escape death. So no one should be scared I understand many were scared but they shouldn’t be. I don’t know why people have even gone to the extent of calling it Satanism but I really don’t care what they think because Galations 2 :20 tells me I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live but Christ lives in me. I had done radio on the Copperbelt for 4 years and studied Journalism but I wanted more out of my career so I relocated to South Africa and began working on a different show on Africa Magic as a field presenter in the same year. By early 2013 I sort of laid out a plan for my life and where I wanted to be so I prayed about it and I came up with the

concept for Kumwesu under Ground Focus Productions for which I am the Production Manager. The concept looked great on paper and even more so after shooting a couple of episodes. We shot across Africa and that’s how Kumwesu was born.Sometimes people think KUMWESU is only for Zambians, but it’s not. The aim is to focus on SADC but not exclude the Rest of Africa. New Era:How would you describe the media industry in Africa and what qualities does it take in order stand out? Mutale: I would describe the media industry as competitive. Actually highly competitive. There’s so much talent out there so it’s very important to be on top of your game all the time. If one must stand out he/ she must be innovative, confident and hardworking. Another key point is to be able to re- invent oneself. New Era:You are your own Production Manager and an Entrepreneur in the business of media, what success principles do you live by? Mutale: 1 - Enjoy What You Are Doing. 2 - Create Something That Stands Out. 3 - Create Something That Everybody Who Works for You is Really Proud of. 4 - Be a Good Leader. 5 - Be Visible.

wise person once said “The best time to start anything was yesterday…. the next best time is now!” A more profound truth has seldom been spoken. All too often we think about that unguaranteed piece of real estate called “tomorrow” and are sure that things will remain as they are long enough for us to be able to make vital changes “tomorrow” – bad move. Make today count and develop a culture of saving as you will have been groomed in the art of putting away that little extra income for future purchases or event for a rainy day. Why Save? In an age where just about everything is instantly available literally at the click of a mouse or tap of a screen, it is easy to slip into a world of instant gratification with little or no regard for the future. It is a relatively common occurrence to hear about people borrowing purely for consumption and to keep up appearances. This is a sure fire recipe for disaster. One of my financial mentors once told me it was only acceptable to borrow money if it was going to be used as seed; meaning if it was going to yield some form of sustainable reward. He said

borrow to get educated or to build, for everything else, save. These words have stayed true to this very day and always reverberate each time there is a financial decision to be made. Many times all we need to ask ourselves before committing finances to some venture are the following questions: “Do I need this?” “Do I need this now?” “Will I lose anything if I wait for this item?” “Does this item hold any future benefit for me or am I merely satisfying a current want/ craving?” Often, by the time you are asking question number two you already have an answer and it is usually no. Sadly most instances of “need” are actually just wants that cloud our judgment and appear like necessities. Stop for a while, think rationally and you’ll be amazed at how that thing “you cannot do without” suddenly pales into the realms of “stuff I really don’t need” A Good Way to Save Whilst there exist numerous schools of thought on how much or how little to save, one thing remains constant – we all need to save some portion of our earnings. Obviously we mustn’t sacrifice living a decent life for the sake of saving as this would defeat
the purpose of earning to begin with. Ideally, anything between 10% and 50% of earnings should be saved. What dictates how much to save ranges from how soon you want to use the resources, amount currently being earned by the saver and even how willing the saver is to forego certain current items for the sake of the long term project/ activity being saved for. There is nothing magical about saving; just discipline and commitment to the cause. The best part is even a ten Kwacha saved every day equates into K300 each month, K3,600 each year and K18, 000 in five years. Factor in interest earned on your savings and you’ll be sitting pretty in no time. h e Lusaka Stock Exchange opened its doors on 21st February 1994. The formation of the Exchange was a response to part of the Government’s economic reform program aimed at developing the financial and capital market in order to support and enhance private sector initiative. The LuSE has operated a unified market (both equity and debt) for 20 years now. It has facilitated the raising of relatively cheaper long-term capital and in so doing complemented the financial sector product offering of short-term capital that is common place in the money market. The Lusaka Stock Exchange has an agenda to educate young people about the stock exchange and how they can participate and benefit from it.
BASIC FACTS about understanding the stock market by LuSE What is a stock exchange? A stock exchange is a market where the securities of companies and other institutions are bought and sold, i.e. traded. What are securities? Securities are instruments for raising finance

by the shareholders of a company. They come in two types-equity securities and debt securities. Equity securities, which are also known as shares, give one part-ownership of a company and with it the right to a share of a company’s dividends. Debt securities represent a debt by an organization. They can be issued variously by companies and governments both local and central. They do not give their owners ownership of the organization. They are usually issued for a fixed term and the amount of capital represented by them has to be paid back to their owners at the end of the debt security’s term. Debt securities usually also carry an interest charge which is paid to their holders at specified periods during the debt security’s term. What is trade? A trade is the action of transacting in securities on the LuSE. A trade is effected when buyers and sellers orders match at a given price. What is a primary market? Primary market offerings of securities occur when securities are offered for sale to the public for the first time.
What is meant by secondary market trading? Secondary market trading of securities occurs when shares that have been bought through a primary market offering are traded on the LuSE. What law governs the operation of the LuSE? The operations of the LuSE are governed by the Securities Act (No.38) of 1993 Cap 354 of the Laws of Zambia. The implementation of the Securities Act is the role of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Zambia. What is the proof of ownership of securities? There is what is known as a Contract Note (CN). It is issued after a trade has settled on the LuSE. The CN is produced by the buyer’s stockbroker who then hands it over to the buyer of a security. What is the Central Share Depository? The Central Share Depository (CSD) is a computerized central point in which all the shares of listed and quoted companies and all listed debts securities are held. It is a type of “warehouse” of records for the holders of all instruments that are tradable on the LuSE. An account is opened for every holder of the instrument. On that account is the name of the
What is meant by a listed company? A listed company is one which has a presence on the top tier of the LuSE, the “listed tier”. The listed tier is composed of public limited companies (Plcs) that have met the LuSE listing requirements, have had their listings approved by the LuSE Listing Committee and the full LuSE Board and have paid the listing fee commensurate with the market value of their issued capital. An Initial Public Offering (IPO) occurs when a company offers its shares for sale to the public on the LuSE for the first time. When a company decides to have an IPO it is said to be “Going Public”. Going Public describes the process through which a company converts itself from a private limited company to a public limited company (Plc) and subsequently sells its shares to the general public via an IPO over a licensed stock exchange.
As such, they remain on the LuSEs quoted tier.
What are listed debt securities? In order to be listed, debt securities must have first been registered with the SEC Zambia. After the debt securities have been offered and bought on the open market, the listing application is formally applied for after which the debt securities are indicated on the LuSE’s listed debt securities tier. What are quoted debt securities? As with listed debt securities, quoted debt securities must first be registered with the SEC Zambia. However, issuers of these debt securities never formally apply for listing on the LuSE.
What is a stockbroker? A stockbroker is a LuSE member firm and is licensed by the SEC Zambia to buy and sell securities on the LuSE on behalf of investors. To start the process of investing, the stockbroker will usually request the investor to open an account with them.
HOW TO INVEST In order for you to begin the process of buying and selling shares, you would first and foremost need to assign yourself with a broker. Having decided to invest in securities that are listed or quoted on the LuSE, investors must choose a stockbroker.

What has been the best advise you have ever been given? Always put God first and everything else will fall into place. Share with us more about your Save Our City Library project what inspired that? Save Our City Library is a charity that deals with dilapidated libraries in Zambia. Our first project and current project is the Lusaka City Library. I was inspired to help with the renovations when I first visited it with my mum in 2008 and we realized that there was a need for new books, computers and a general uplift. I have had the privilege of being a member of libraries that are very well stocked with books and resources whilst I was in the UK and I felt it would be nice for Lusaka to have that. It is also important for children to have base for developing a reading culture so that when they become adults, they continue reading and expanding their horizons.
Since then we have partnered with various organizations such as the Beit Trust, Rotary Club of Lusaka and Book Aid International who have provided a lot of support to us over the years. The Beit Trust funds went towards the general renovations, we did a lot of painting on the inside and outside, re-tiled the building, added a security feature replaced a lot of broken doors and added electrical units amongst other things. The Rotary Club of Lusaka received donations from one of their sister clubs in England and they bought 6 brand new computers. Book Aid International have been with us since 2008 and they have donated over 4,000 brand new books to date to the Lusaka City Library and they will continue to do more. We want to thank our individual donors as well for their support and we hope that they will continue to do more. Why are libraries important to you? Libraries are important because they provide a platform for everyone, despite their background, to develop and discover their interests. It can also be a good environment to meet others who share the same interests as yourself and it can create an opportunity to network. Obviously not in the quiet reading areas How has the program improved the library so far? Well I think the changes have been appreciated by the public and it’s a lot more welcoming. A number of people have started using the library again and reading the new books that are available on short loan. It looks a lot better and we hope that with more support, we can buy new furniture and replace the windows. How do you balance yourself as a corporate brand and a philanthropist? It’s very difficult; both are demanding but my job has to come first always because that is where I get paid. I usually spend my weekends and any free time I have on my charity work. So it is visiting the library, following up any issues that arise and responding to e-mails. It’s a lot of work but I enjoy both very much and both are very important parts of my life. How would you encourage well-wishers to support the project? Reading is the foundation for development and growth in any community, so I would encourage people to invest in this project as it will enable us to provide more resources and a better environments for people to read. He has written not one or two but five books whose main thoughts are about discovering and utilizing your potential and living a significant purpose-driven life. We chat with the much loved and highly celebrated author. New Era: Who has had the most influence in shaping you first as a person and as a writer? Dario: I have had a number of people who have deposited so much in me. Of course first on the list are my parents who allowed me to pursue what I fell in love with. I feel the greatest gift they gave me was to let me become the man I believed I should be; to live a dream that is truly mine and not who they thought I should become. Pastor Choolwe Mudenda- Gospel Envoy and my Pastor Walker Schurz. Miracle Life Family Church have influenced me in great ways. Growth by experience has also really shaped me. Making mistakes and correcting them plus reflecting on my past work and realizing that I can do much better. Reading other peoples work has equally helped me grow as a writer because I have learned and continue to learn how to communicate effectively. Dario’s greatest inspiration is his faith; his belief in God and Gods purpose. He feels that a lot of people live far below who God made them to be and always wants to inspire them to go deeper and become as authentic as they possibly can. To live a purposeful life. New Era: What challenges have you had to deal with?

Dario: My initial challenges had to do with resources. I didn’t have the money to get my work printed when I started. The costs were significantly high then for me since I wasn’t working and of course, no one was crazy enough to support a boys dreams, especially that of writing. I overcame this by selling the computer I had used to type the first book and raised the few kwachas that got some copies printed. The other challenges I have faced have been getting people to buy into what I do and this continues to be a challenge I have to deal with. With the type of writing that I do, one needs to build some credibility about themselves and their message and that’s what I keep doing. Perhaps the most common challenge to Zambian authors is that we must deal with a culture whose love for entertainment exceeds their love for knowledge. In other words, a culture that struggles with reading. Having said that though, I think I am seeing some changes for the better and I believe that change will continue. New Era: Who is Dario Chongolo? Dario: I consider myself to be nothing more than a young man with a gift to encourage and inspire the best in others. One that calls others to live significant lives. The kind of life that looks beyond self-interests but those of others too. I really think I am just a match-stick that God uses to light flames in the hearts of many. What I do with my life has taken a leap of faith. To get dreams of this kind working, you must develop a strong belief, almost a stubborn belief in what you are doing. Without it, the many discouragements that come your way will drown you so you much look to something greater and there is nothing greater than knowing it’s a God thing..
New Era: What local and international Authors inspire you? Dario: Internationally, Andy Andrews is one who is slowly becoming a personal favourite because of his style of writing. He has significantly influenced my style as well or perhaps has added a dimension to my communicating skills that I hadn’t used before. I have loved the writings of Chibamaba Kanyama (ACIEVEMENT VALUES FOR YOUNG ADULTS), Dr. Sichalwe Kasanda (BROUGHT UP TO FAIL), Brenda Muntemba (IN RETROSPECT), Prince Zulu (REACHING YOUR GOD-GIVEN DREAM) and a lot of other local authors. They always make me realize that Zambians are amazing writers. How many books have you written so far? Dario: I have only written 6 books; Sentenced To Succeed, Manifesting Your Destiny, Understanding The Masculine heart-boys will be boys (co-authored with Davies Malembeka) , Picking a Fight-dare to make a difference and Fighting To The Finish. In my profession, patience and precision are most essential as we spend a lot of time running experiments that require your at most attention due to the sensitivity of the enzymes that we work with. Share with us what your job entails as a research and teachers assistant at the Carleton University I am currently pursuing a Masters degree at Carleton University in molecular biology/ Biochemistry. I also work as a biology research assistant as well as a teacher’s Assistant at the University. My research is currently focused on protein engineering in the hopes of providing information to add to the development of various antibiotics and therapeutics. While my duties as a teachers assistant are to assist Biology professors by co-ordinating and supervising
What about your job gives you a sense of fulfillment? The fact that I am contributing to the betterment of society is what is most fulfilling about my job. Just the thought that the work and effort i’m putting in may one day be useful to someone.

I am exceedingly humbled and profoundly gratified to have her show me the ropes as my life coach, guide and trusted advisor. She is beyond a mentor because she stretches beyond for me like only a mother would. This phenomenal woman is Head of Human Capital at Standard Bank Group of Companies, owns a well-established Farming Business and is also Proprietor of LIF Magazine, a platform on which she taught
me and prepared me to one day realise my dream- New Era Youth Magazine. So now I turn to her and get valuable lessons on how to be successful in this business as well as other areas of life. This is mentorship with the Master. Mutale: What challenges did you have to deal with in your youth? Eve: My mom died when I was nine so my whole young life I was kept by my sister and the challenge with being kept is you receive kept love and kept hope so by the time I was in grade 12 I wanted to keep myself so when I wrote my last grade 12 paper on a Friday, I was on a bus to Lusaka on a Saturday to look for a job and keep myself. I became born again before going to campus and that helped me focus and achieve beyond the challenges young people face.
Mutale : How did you become Celtel (now Airtel) Director of Human Resource at only 25 years old? Eve: When I was in 2nd year of campus I decided to look for a full time job despite being a full time student so by the time I graduated I had a solid job with 3 years experience. All this started with putting prices on food items at Quicksave and whilst there I was moved to filling, then administrative assistant and when the manager learned I was studying HR on campus, he promoted me to HR and there I helped grow human resource from 200 to 700. Not too long afterwards Celtel advertised for an HR officer. I was only 21 when I went in and little did I know they wanted to get rid of the manager and find a replacement so in only two months they tested me and before long the lady who was my manager was fired and they told me you are the HR manager. Pastor Jay my mentor then gave me valuable lessons, he taught me to work hard and get to work an hour before everyone and leave later than everyone and the thing about hard work is it doesn’t go unnoticed. So one day David Venn, my boss then, called me in his office and made me an offer to either go out of the country to work in a different environment or a promotion in my department and of course I loved the idea of the promotion! I was so excited to be a Director at 25! You see, my age did not interfere with my work during my formative years because I headed my Father in law’s advice, he instructed me to never disclose my age. So that was my secret and it worked for me. Mutale: What leadership advice would you give to someone starting their own magazine? Eve: The first thing I tell people in my business mentorship classes is that personal mastery is of absolute importance when one is starting out. You must know yourself and what you like. Don’t start a business in something you don’t like. When I started Let it Flow (LIF) magazine I loved magazines, I read every True love magazine to a point where I could predict what the next one will look like so Self-mastery is cardinal you must know what your strengths are because if you know your strengths you can resource around your weaknesses because no one is 100%. If you are going to do what you don’t like it will show. Secondly know the skill, like for you who is starting your own magazine, writing should be part of the skill set you develop and be the master of that. Having a skill for the job is easy because skills can simply be developed so then when your

Mutale: Talking about staying power, how does one stay on top? Eve: Always understand your market and what drives them, you need to stretch further and make people want to need your product and not just want it and innovation is what makes that happen. In Zambia the problem is everyone wants to do what others are doing but the person that innovates something new is the one that will make it. Right now Zambia needs manufactures we have enough of traders. Mutale: Ma, we do dream and often times develop the perfect plan but when life happens it often derails us, how can one keep one’s eyes on the ball Eve: Derailment is good, I don’t see it as a bad thing because derailment builds character. The only thing that keeps your eyes on the ball is to have a vision that is unwavering. When you have dreamt and conceptualise what you want to become, derailment will come but you will always look at what you want to accomplish. In my coaching classes I like to make my students cut out pictures from magazine and make their own visual boards. And at first they will cut funny things like cars, houses but as we go they start pushing harder and cut things bigger than themselves. If something is not bigger than you it will die as soon as the first derailment comes. If a vision is bigger than its owner it lasts beyond the visionary as seen with the likes of Coca cola and apple. Your dream must consume you and it will be painful to birth but if you think of stopping you can’t stop because you know it is something God would not want you to do so this Youth magazine has to be bigger than you, it will succeed. Mutale: Did you have a mentor growing up and why is it so hard to find one Eve: I had different mentors at different stages of my life like when I was younger I had Pastor Jay who sort of grounded me in what I was going to become he taught me the foundations and I also had mentors in my CEOs but outside that I started looking for more in my mentors so then I decided to split my mentorship into different pockets as I grew older because I couldn’t find one whole person. It is not possible to find one holistic mentor because people are flawed no one can ever be flawless. I have somebody who is helping me be a millionaire because she is a millionaire so I pay her to mentor me to become one but will she mentor me in other things of life no she won’t so then for those things I look to my other mentors. 1. God has to be at the core of it, if God is not calling me to do it then I won’t commit to it. 2. My family. Having gone through a divorce I value this principle. If it is not working for my husband or my daughter Natola then it won’t have my attention. 3. Respecting people. I won’t do something that disrespects people even if it is as little as coming late for a meeting. I am usually 30 minutes early just to respect the person. I also don’t look down on people and care enough to address them as Ma’am and Sir whether they are high or low because that is my brand. 4. I keep learning because learning keeps you questioning and growing. The moment you think you know everything then you die. I love learning from kids, if you asked me who I am listening to right now you will be shocked to learn it is a young musician called Davido. I keep learning even from the old Madalas and everyone. I open my eyes, keep humble and learn from even the most unsuspected of places. 5. Be financially savvy. I have seen people who had it all but due to lack of financial discipline they lose it all so I aim to be financially savvy. Do not keep up with people who don’t sleep thinking about you. I used to think it is important to drive the best car and wear the best clothes but why do it for people. This month if you can’t afford nails think about doing stick-ons by yourself. a m probably the wrong person to give anyone financial advice because while growing up, I really wasn’t that good with looking after my money. On the other hand though, I may be the best person to teach someone because the older I get, the more hard knock lessons I learn. Two sides of one coin – take your pick. I didn’t study financial management or Banking and Finance but I have lived life so I know a thing or two. This is not book stuff. This is real life. I know that if I had started way back when, I would certainly be a wealthy woman before I hit the big Four O. I will start by telling you likely mistakes for any young person, then I will delve into what I did wrong and then I will conclude by sharing what I think you can do to be wealthy by the time you hit the big four O.
Common Mistakes
Forever Young - A lot of young people think they will be forever young. Try as they might they just don’t picture themselves as older or even as old people. Always remember that you will get older. The older you get, the less energy you have so you are better off making money while you are young. Mommy and Daddy – Thinking that mommy and daddy will always be around and will always provide the lifestyle that we are used to. You may be growing up in the suburbs, eating 3 hearty meals a day, driving a decent car – all paid for by mommy and daddy. Well guess what, mommy and daddy had to work to get where they are. If your mommy and daddy are like my mommy and daddy, they had to pull themselves up by the boot straps to become successful. You too have to start somewhere and that might be lower than what

you are used to. Going with flow – Following what our friends are doing. Why not flip the script and be the financial knowledge trendsetter? Learn as much as you can so that you become the thought leader in wealth creation. Sink your teeth into some financial information, get yourself a financial advisor and share this with your friends.
My Mistakes
Trendy – I always had to be the best dressed. I spent so much money on clothes and having a good time. Guaranteed this is extremely important as there are just some things you have to get out of your system ☺ but you have to be wise about it. I could have spent less money on my wardrobe and still be as hot as coals. Generosity – my friends could always count on me to buy the drinks or the dinner or pay the concert charge. Infact most of them counted on me so much that I don’t recall them ever contributing to our lifestyle. Ignorance – It never even crossed my mind to save money. I loved to spend. Saving or investing wasn’t even an option that I knew about.
What You Must Do
Care Enough to Start – That’s all it takes. The hardest part of anything is the beginning. Once you care enough to start, you will certainly find out the information you need and be able to Start Young – Start NOW! Not too long ago, a young lady told me that she was having problems convincing her mum to allow her to move back home. She wanted to move back home so that she could save money
spent on rent and direct the saving towards construction of a small flat. Now that’s what I’ m talking about! If she continues on that trajectory It may not be real estate that you decide to invest in as this obviously requires a whole lot more time and capital but you certainly have options that would not strain you in any way. Bride: My best moments include walking down the aisle escorted by both my parents. And at the reception hall, seeing what our years of planning and preparing had translated into. It was so beautiful. The décor by Mwape and Martha Mbewe was really a job well done. Also having Abel Chungu Musuka and Mutamula Mwale sing some Christian love songs and some praise and worship during the church ceremony was beautiful. My entrance song was played and sang live. It was an awesome and joyful experience What is the beauty in marrying young? Couple: It feels like we are just friends and not a couple under oath to spend forever with each other. It’s easy to relate when you are both inexperienced and new to this beautiful thing called marriage. It’s a wonderful feeling. The people that made it extra ordinary The reception had Lulu Hangala and Abel Chungu Musuka as MCs. They entertained the audience in between the program and the Groom’s Elder brother Kasambwe, who is a Dallas based professional comedian in the USA, got the guests laughing with his antics. Kayambila choreographed the dance routines, together with his old time friend Jophael Banda who was also on the line-up.

Lemon and Garlic Roast Chicken Ingredients 1 (2.5 to 3kg) roasting chicken Salt Freshly ground black pepper 1 large bunch fresh thyme 4 lemons 3 heads garlic, cut in half crosswise 30g butter, melted 225g streaky bacon rashers 240ml white wine 120ml chicken stock Method How to make Lemon and Garlic Roast Chicken 1) Preheat the oven to 220째C/ Gas mark 7. Remove the chicken giblets. Rinse the chicken inside and out. Remove any excess fat and leftover pinfeathers and pat the outside dry. Place the chicken in a large roasting tray. 2) Liberally salt and pepper the inside of the chicken. Stuff the cavity with the thyme (reserving enough thyme to garnish the chicken dish), one lemon, halved, and two halves of the heads of garlic. Brush the outside of the chicken with the butter and
sprinkle again with salt and pepper. 3) Tie the legs together with kitchen string and tuck the wing tips under the body of the chicken. Cut two of the lemons in quarters and scatter the quarters and remaining garlic around the chicken. Lay the streaky bacon rashers over the chicken to cover. 4) Roast the chicken for one hour. Remove the bacon from the top of the chicken and set aside. Continue roasting the chicken for an additional 30 minutes, or until the juices run clear when you cut between a leg and

Method How to make Cheesecake Cupcakes Melt the butter in a small pan over a low heat. Put the biscuits in a plastic bag and using a rolling pin crush them to a fine consistency and tip into a bowl. Mix in the butter and the golden syrup until nice and sticky. Divide between 12 cake cases and with a back of a spoon or a small glass which fits inside pat the mixture down. Preheat the oven to 180째C/Fan 160째C, 350째F, Gas Mark 4.

Add the wine and chicken stock and bring it to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for five minutes, or until reduced by half. 6) Slice the chicken on a platter. Garnish the chicken with the bacon slices, roasted garlic, reserved thyme and one lemon, sliced. Serve with the gravy.
Combine the sour cream, cream cheese, egg, flour, lemon zest, half the lemon juice and the golden syrup in a mixing bowl. Use a hand blender to mix together until smooth. Spoon the filling into the cake cases right up to the brim and bake on the middle shelf of the oven for 15-20 minutes to set the cheesecakes. They should still be pale in colour when they are ready. Remove, leave to cool in their tins for about 30 minutes then carefully transfer to cool completely on a wire rack. In a small pan combine the rest of the lemon juice, the ginger, the pears and the golden syrup. Simmer for 4-5 minutes until the pear is just cooked - be careful not to break the pear up. Lift the pear and ginger out with a slotted spoon to a bowl then boil the syrup for 5-8 minutes to reduce it down to 1 tablespoon, drizzle over the pears and leave to cool. Spoon the pear mixture over the tops of cheesecakes, arrange on a plate and serve.

hen I think of Sifelani Mwale and her compassionate heart I am reminded of these words “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did but people will never forget how you made them feel” by Maya Angelou. Sifelani aka Sife, has a heart driven by compassion and a desire to give of herself to helping children in her community get an education. And even when she has nothing to give, her love and care are enough in changing these young lives for the better. Not only is she a powerful Gospel singer but she is a celebrity with a cause.
What is your project all about and what inspired you to start this project? Our project is called Saving Our Future Today (S.O.F.T), it is a non-profit making organisation whose major intention is to establish schools that will offer quality affordable education to less privileged children all over Zambia. S.O.F.T initiative is currently running Jedidiah Christian Academy which is based in Makeni Konga. What inspired S.O.F.T? When I came back from University in S.A, we moved to Makeni and there I realised how
most families had very low incomes and could hardly pay for their children’s fees so then I decided to open up a school or may I say a tuition centre where I could teach the kids the ABC’s for free. I didn’t think that in a months’ time I would have over 80 pupils because when we started we had no roof, no chairs or boards but daily the children would still come because they were hungry for an education. Eventually, I had over a hundred children and I didn’t have enough teaching materials or teachers to meet the numbers of children so then I thought we get the parents to contribute about K5 a month so that I could pay teachers because I personally teach for free but the others need to survive. The process wasn’t always easy but God saw us through though we had to close down in 2011 because there was no place for the children to sit especially in the rainy season. But this year in 2014 God blessed us with a building to rent and we reopened and in 2 months we have over 90 children who have enrolled. How did you find courage to carry out such a life changing task? When it hurts your soul to see the little ones you love not being able to have something you believe they deserve to have, you don’t think about what it really takes all you do is jump into action to save a life even when you don’t have the resources. I did not know how or where but there is just a push of instinct that jumps in and pushes me to want to do the imaginable. I would say only God knows. What challenges do you face? We have had financial constraints but another challenge that really bothers me is that of knowing that most of the children that pass through my hands might never go beyond the level of their parents. man who has very little to his name looked at me and said, “thank you for the work you are doing in the lives of our children. My son is now able to speak in English to his mother then he laughs and says his mother can’t understand English because she never went to school,” he went on to say something that really touched me to a point that tears rolled down my face he said, “I know I will never be able to pay for my son until university but let me do what I can when am able to. When he left, it pained me to know that that little handsome and intelligent boy might end up with nothing much because his dad has no money to go beyond what we can offer. Why is giving back to these young lives so important to you? Simple it is more blessed to give than it is to receive. I am happy to see some children come out with great testimonies, others have finished grade 12 some are in grade 9 etc. I have seen God and His faithfulness that is why I leave everything in order to follow Him. Share your thoughts on the importance of education in the lives of young children and how individuals can support. Education is the best way of empowerment and engagement with society. It is such a powerful tool and is the only sure way of bridging the gap between the affluent and those less privileged. At S.O.F.T we believe strongly if you give a man a fish you feed him for a day but if you teach him how to fish you feed him for life. We want to teach our children how to fish so that come what may they are equipped and ready for life. urpose is not something we invent. It is something we discover, and the discovery is continuous. In other words; purpose has layers to be discovered. Another thing to appreciate is that purpose, in this respect is contextual and that context is time: Time in the sense that you and I only have this much time to live. I love the psalm that declares; “teach us to number our days that we might gain a heart of wisdom.” Scripture also says of David that when he had served his generation, he slept. Let us establish a working definition of purpose. It is simply what God wants you to do with your life during your lifetime: The WHY of your existence. One thing to pull out of this definition is that it is what GOD wants you to do… I earlier alluded to the fact that purpose is not invented; it is discovered. That means that your creator has specific intentions for your existence on the earth. In Ephesians 2:10, scripture says that we are God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works. Purpose is about those good works God created for you to walk in. Now, let me be quick to mention that just because God intends something for you doesn’t necessarily mean that it will automatically happen. Purpose requires your
cooperation. Let me qualify this point by referring to the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Canaan. One thing that is clear is that God intended that they should enter Canaan but interestingly that generation did not because they were disobedient. So we have established at least two things: 1) Purpose is discovered 2) It requires your cooperation The other thing I mentioned is that the discovery process is continuous. As you take the first steps into your purpose, you will begin to discover and uncover the other dimensions to your purpose. The important thing isn’t seeing the whole picture but knowing what step to take next. So walk in what you know now and you will keep discovering the other layers. How then do you know that you are walking in your purpose? There are some “litmus” tests really. 1) It is a God thing; I have kind of already alluded to this aspect but let me add something else. Purpose glorifies God: It brings honor to Him and therefore it is moral and ethical 2) Purpose is a people thing: whatever God wants to do with your life, He has other people in mind. Take the example of Joseph in the bible. He sees himself becoming a ruler someday. This was personally exciting and beneficial for him yet he was also the same
person who masterminded the preservation and storage of food in preparation of the coming famine. It is critical to understand that it’s not just about you; it’s about others as well. 3) You are equipped for your purpose; your gifts and abilities and the skills you acquire are some indication of what you will do well in life. In addition to this, you will most definitely have other people tell you what you are gifted at doing. 4) It is fulfilling. Perhaps nothing in life is as satisfying as doing what you were born to do. It’s almost like the reward is living out your purpose itself. This is often accompanied by an enormous amount of energy. Walking in your purpose does not drain you, as a matter of fact, it energizes you. This of course isn’t a conclusive list. I often tell people that when you discover your purpose, you will know it. Based on the above parameters, a good question for me to ask you is that what is in your heart to do? That good and godly thing. The scriptures declare that God will give us the desires of our hearts. A good way to look at this is to see it this way; God will give you what to desire. So I ask again; what is in your heart to do? What do you desire? Let me conclude with a question. When you come to the end of your life, will it really matter that you ever lived?

Humility because that is what it takes to listen to others and attitude because how you respond to things matters. I think a great lesson in following is to follow the way you would like to be followed; to respond to the way you want to be responded to. The truth is that how you respond to leadership gives permission to others to respond the same way to you when you lead. The other important reason to following is that it really prepares you, if you are attentive to what you should expect as a leader. It gives you an opportunity to see from the outside that you too will be criticized, spoken of unfairly, misunderstood and sometimes unfairly treated. You kind of prepare yourself on how you will respond to such things when you lead. It’s not so much how you are treated as it is the lessons you learn in those times that matters.
Most of us need help to develop the discipline that will enable us to lead ourselves successfully. I recommend enlisting the services of a mentor or coach if you like. I know this to be important because I have experienced first-hand the benefits of having a mentor. As a matter of fact, part of selfleadership is that you are responsible to identify the areas that you need help in and find a way to develop those areas. In short pay the price that your growth demands.
LEARN TO LEAD YOURSELF Leading yourself is perhaps the most challenging thing you will ever do. It requires developing disciplined behavior; habits and mannerisms that make it possible for you to attain your goals. If you can successfully lead yourself, then you can successfully lead others.
In conclusion then, we must remember that we lead from who we are and not necessarily from what we know. Therefore our number one goal should be to continuously become the kind of leaders that we demand of others to be. In other words we must become the type of leader we would love to FOLLOW.

We have difficulty with it and submit to almost unmanageable urges that compel us to act in a manner divergent from good relationship behavior. Men tend to be the main offenders in this epidemic. We men have that massive male ego to contend with for one, and an almost primordial instinct to “win” at every endeavor we partake in. Timing (Make Time) Make it a Priority. Make that effort, sit down across from her after a long day to discuss work, friends, how both your days went and your relationship but do seize the opportunity to mention how well things are going or if not, bring up areas you need to improve on to give her what she needs. I also must add that, do not shy away from explaining to her what you need from her. Remember we are all human, and we do not have psychic powers to guess what our partners need. Do Crunches: This is one of the best exercises you can do to start strengthening those abs right away, in your home, without ever needing to go to the gym. Do not forget to listen! Be an Active Listener Active listening and not just passive hearing. It’s not that hard to be an active listener but it does require a few traits that men sometimes find baffling such as patience, concentration and modesty. • Patience because you have to give her as much time to listen to her message as she needs, point blank • Concentration is key because you have to not only look at her, but also focus on her: her eyes, her body language and her voice. What is she saying? What is she telling you? What does she want you to know? • Many men, have a problem letting someone
take the floor for an extended period of time. Hence the modesty. They like to hear their own voice and want others to hear it too. These men want to dominate the conversation. It should be highlighted that this is not a good trait, not conducive to good relationship connection. So by all means toss your ego aside and let her speak. And above all else, let her have the last word once in a while, most of the while. Trust me; it’s not a sign of masculine weakness to do so. Look Out For the Nonverbal Communication Not that am the best man there is on this earth but when my woman is sad, upset angry, my sensors are on high alert and alarms go off in my head. I just know. Get to know your partner in depth, maybe her body language is less subtle than other women, but still, as soon as an instinct in you is set off try by all means to quickly attempt to douse the fire. Remember that communication is a two-way street: It requires the proper delivery of a message, as well as an active listener to process it. If you keep that in mind and do so with compassion, sensitivity and hold that ego at bay, you should come out a winner... you know what I mean.

This is a good exercise to do if you’re worried about making your ab muscles look too big, and you just want them sleek and toned. • Lie on the floor on your stomach, with your legs stretched out behind you. • Lift yourself up onto your forearms. Your elbows should be directly below your shoulders, with your arms pointed forward, like a Sphinx. • Raise your torso and legs up so that your arms and tiptoes are holding your body’s weight. You should feel your ab muscles tighten. • Hold the position for 30 seconds. Relax on the floor, then do another 30.
Do the single-leg stretch to work your upper abs. Lie on the floor on your back with your knees bent. Slightly lift your head towards your chest. Pull your left leg into your chest, and grab it with your hands. Then, lift your right leg to a 45 degree angle, hold for a few seconds, then switch legs. Don’t forget cardio. Perform cardiovascular exercise, like running, biking and swimming, a few times a week. Remember that your body needs to burn fat so that your abs will be visible, and cardio will help with full-body weight loss

How many regrettable onenight stands have you gone into mistakably thinking sex will seal the deal? Jumping into bed with Mr Wrong is not only damaging to your self-esteem, it even puts your health in danger - and there is no sensible reason you should do it. Slow down and get to know yourself and a potential mate; a successful relationship isn’t built between the sheets. By Michele Borboa The risks of dropping your drawers Using sex in hopes of “sealing the deal” puts women’s emotional and physical health at risk. Self-esteem-wise it’s a roulette game. Eventually some women figure out that holding out for the good stuff is the way to go, but the price they pay for that intrinsic information is staggering. Those women who don’t figure it out end up suffering any number of ways -- including alcohol and drug addiction, depression, anxiety disorders, etc. – due to the fact that they have externally referenced their basic value as a person and objectified their own worth. Many of those same women who are lucky enough to awaken from this destructive pattern will forge a path of purpose, self-discovery and love, and re-emerge stronger and wiser for it. However, some women don’t make it out at all and compromise having had the chance to experience real and true love. Benefits of waiting to have sex When you know love doesn’t have a shelf life (in other words, waiting before you hop in the sack), you get to enjoy real courtship, the magical dance of romance where every kiss, holding of hands and glance is potentially filled with passion and more. things down, two people can really get to witness each other and explore sincerely whether or not they are a great fit. This, of course, applies only to those who actually want a healthy, fulfilling, sustainable relationship and not just a good time. Ultimately, for two people who wait before having sex, the relationship gets to be built on this bedrock of trust, support and gives them what it takes to go the distance. What you need to know Firstly, self-esteem isn’t built between the sheets. So if someone leaves you or doesn’t call you because you said no you need to remember that people with a healthy selfesteem don’t take rejection that personally, and rather move on to the other 3.5 billion opportunities to find love and intimacy with someone who does call, is respectful and actually displays behaviours that show they want to be with that person. Second, waiting for sex isn’t about the other person; it’s about you. It’s about knowing when you are ready to be with someone in a sacred way, sharing your sacred self. It takes time to make sure who a potential mate seems to be matches what you feel. Only then can you decide if they deserve your trust. When do you want to find out the guy you just slept with is a player, sleeping with several other women, or has a wicked STD or worse? Before or after you have sex? Bottom line: It hurts more when we don’t take care to wait and things go wrong. It is worth the wait!

olf is a precision club and ball sport which requires accuracy, consistency and exactness in its delivery. One must know when to drive, approach and putt in order to get the ball into the winning hole. Internationally, we have the likes of Tiger Woods that have mastered and monopolised the game and locally we have our own champ and she, yes she is making enormous waves in the world of golf! She is young and beautiful, her name is Melissa Nawa. New Era: When did your love for golf begin? Melissa: I was initially forced into it by my dad so I really didn’t like it at first but then the love came when I started understanding and doing it well. New Era: What have been your challenges as a young female golfer? Mellissa: The challenges I faced when I started was in regards to it not being “as fun” because I was the only girl for a really long time so it was hard to enjoy myself but then that changed when more girls joined and now that I have my own academy of young girls I have company. The other challenge I have

always faced is that of sponsorship because it is very hard. New Era: Why is it important for young people to play a sport? Melissa: I think it is important because it keeps them away from negative endeavours and can also be life changing when welldeveloped because it opens so many opportunities for travel and job opportunities. New Era: Kindly share with us your favourite golf moments and wins. Melissa: They are quite a few but the first memorable one was winning Lusaka Junior open and them giving me a male trophy because I was the only girl playing and they didn’t think I would actually win. Other favourites for me include the Uganda ladies open, Egypt ladies open in the same year, Zambia ladies open as well as sports woman of the year (2008). New Era: What inspired you to begin mentoring and training young girls? Melissa: I have always dreamt of teaching young people the game of golf. It has always been on my to-do list and give back to my
community through golf. I just didn’t think I’d focus mainly on girls, but I love it. New Era: You also have a program on Saturday morning where you teach the “Bwanas” such as Bank Director, how do you manage to teach those older than you and of high status. What coaching style do you implement? Melissa: Funny thing is I don’t get intimidated because I know my sport and what I am talking about. I am ready to teach anyone who wants to learn and I would like to have more of the working women on Saturday its just that right now I am focused more on my younger girls academy but I still make allowance for those that want lessons so simply approach me, we set a date and time and we start from the basics. I have become a bit more lenient on the older clientele because I know it is a little harder to learn something new when you are a bit older but with my younger girls I ensure our sessions are intense and very strict because I want them to be disciplined whilst they are still young.
