CHELSEA OLD TOWN HALL

London Art Biennale

Preface The London Art Biennale 2019 gathers 120 artists from 40 distinct nations selected by international museum and gallery professionals to represent the

art of the world in London, the capital of contemporary art. Previous editions

of the Biennale have exhibited artworks from across the globe, showcasing

artists who are present in some of the most important museums worldwide, as well as emerging artists chosen for their talent.

This prestigious show takes place on the King’s Road, Chelsea, where artists such as Augustus John and Alma Tadema created what is known as the true artistic centre of London. Designed by John Brydon in 1885, the Chelsea Old Town Hall is a classic example of Victorian design and elegance offering the

perfect environment in which to celebrate the rich cultural messages conveyed by the selected artworks.

Art is the most powerful form of global expression that possesses the abili-

ty to unite nations and the London Art Biennale passionately promotes art as a common language between all people. The exhibition is a proud and

prestigious event that celebrates the universal communication that visual art enables.

The 2019 Biennale is honoured by Lady Sophie Windsor who will graciously inaugurate the exhibition and open the event. Lady Sophie, formally Lady Frederick Windsor, is a person of exceptional creativity, talent and artistic sensitivity who is the perfect ambassador of the Biennale.

Biennale and Charity Charity is always an important part of the Biennale and Lady Sophie is the ideal patron to help raise awareness for the causes. A fundraising raffle will take place in which a Fiat 500 can be won as well as luxury items from international designers such as Dubarry of Ireland, Cavalli, Moschino and Versace.

Over the years, tens of thousand of pounds have been raised and donat-

ed to Rotary International’s “End Polio Now” Charity, the Salvation Army

and London’s Air Ambulance. The charity cheques were presented by the Mayors of Kensington and Chelsea; Councillor Christopher Buckmaster in 2013; Councillor Mrs Maighread Condon-Simmonds in 2015; and Councillor Elizabeth Rutherford in 2017. In the past, artworks by artists such as

Andy Warhol, Pietro Annigoni and Jose Van Roy Dali have been donated by Gagliardi Gallery.

To further support the charities, the Biennale will present a project that eloquently connects the worlds of art, virtual reality and mental health to raise

funds for Age UK and the Rotary Club of Kensington and Chelsea. The Bien-

nale will showcase a profound 5 year project by Dominic Green M.A FHEA and Danny Bacchus M.A FHEA of Sheffield Hallam University in which

they utilise virtual reality to communicate the life of a person struggling with their mental health. The project was realised with artist Marcel Schreur,

thirty year oral cancer and seven year vascular dementia survivor. Aiding the cause to raise awareness and to allow people to experience what it is like

to have a serious mental health issue, Lady Sophie will introduce the chari-

table cause to the Biennale guests and will be the first person to experience

the Virtual Reality creation, which will be presented by Dominic Green M.A FHEA and Danny Bacchus M.A FHEA.

The Timeless Glory of Chelsea Meets the 21st Century In the heart of Chelsea, contempo-

rary art lovers are invited to view and admire contemporary creativity at the London Art Biennale, the

recurring cultural event that, every edition, is enriched with new cre-

ative talents that contribute to an already vibrant and heterogeneous

artistic heritage rooted in Art History.

“Venus Verticordia” by Dante Gabriel Rossetti

Celebrated artists have conceived

and created timeless masterpieces while wandering through the ele-

gant and eccentric district of Chelsea. Thus establishing a resonant creative hub that, even today, is the heart of one of the world’s art capitals. From the sublime romantic land-

scapes by Joseph Mallord William Turner, who lived in Chelsea, to

the ancient glories allegorical-

ly depicted by the refined touch

of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Chelsea has seen the rise of the hailed

Pre-Raphaelite

painter

Dante Gabriel Rossetti, precursor of the Aesthetic movement

and main inspiration for a second generation of artists and writers

such as William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones.

The Timeless Glory of Chelsea Meets the 21st Century Chelsea’s artistic Golden Age and prolific art scene is catalysed by enlightened cultural

circles and liberal sympo-

sia, such as the wonderful Leighton House, which has

been transformed into one of “The Roses of Heliogabalus” by Lawrence Alma-Tadema

A fantastic cultural experience, show-

the most sophisticated and

unique museums in London.

casing an unprecedented collection

of paintings and sculptures by Lord Frederic Leighton and his contemporaries.

Chelsea is a landmark Royal borough, also for the Post-Impressionist master Augustus Edwin John, recognised

for his brilliant portraits, and his sis-

ter Gwen John, who is known for her paintings of anonymous female sit-

ters. In respect to the London Art Bi-

“Self-Portrait” by Gwen John

ennale, the great pillars of the past wel-

come the artists of today as progressors of this rich cultural legacy.
