Artista, artibista, kultur kudeatzailea, senarra, aita, aholkularia, gizaki aparta eta askoren lagun mina, Gernikako “enbaxadorea”leku guztietan.
Bill Kelly 1943an jaio zen Estatu Batuetako auzune industrial batean, non gazte talde bortitzetako kide izatea gazte askorentzat araua zen. Baina Billen kasuan, artea bere gogoaren erdian egon zen beti, eta arteak eta bakeak markatu zuten bere bizitza osoa.

Artista, artivista, gestor cultural, marido, padre, mentor, ser humano excepcional y amigo íntimo de muchos, embajador en todas partes de Gernika y sus gentes.
Bill Kelly nació en 1943 en una barriada industrial de Estados Unidos, donde la pertenencia a bandas juveniles violentas era la norma para muchos jóvenes. Pero en el caso de Bill, el arte siempre estuvo en el centro de su mente, y el arte y la paz marcaron toda su vida.
Estudió arte en el Philadelphia College of Art (actual Universidad de las Artes) y en la National Gallery School de Melbourne, donde en 1975 estableció su nuevo hogar, y donde tanto contribuyó a las comunidades que le acogieron, al tiempo que se convertía en decano del Victorian College of the Arts.
William Kelly visitó Gernika muchas veces, solo y con su familia. Y también trabajó en muchos lugares del mundo, muchos de ellos trágicamente marcados por el sinsentido de la violencia, como Gernika, Hiroshima, Irlanda del Norte y Sudáfrica. Su visión del arte y la paz sirvió para crear una escuela en cada uno de estos lugares.

Entre sus performances artísticas destacan Fuego y luz en la Plaza de los pacificadores (2001) y Figuras espirituales: Pasajes de la Paz en la Plaza del Fuego y la Luz (mostrada durante la V Conferencia Internacional de Museos por la Paz, celebrada en 2005 en Gernika). Éstas marcaron un preludio y un epílogo en la forma de entender la relación entre arte y paz en nuestra villa.

WILLIAM KELLY (EEUU 1943 – AUSTRALIA 2023) AMBASSADOR OF GERNIKA AND AMBASSADOR OF ART AND PEACE AROUND THE WORLD
Artist, artivist, cultural manager, husband, father, mentor, exceptional human being, and the close friend of many, ambassador everywhere of Gernika and its people.
Bill Kelly was born in 1943 in an industrial slum in the US, where membership in violent youth gangs was the norm for many young people. But in Bill’s case, art was always at the center of his mind, and art and peace marked his whole life. He studied art at the Philadelphia College of Art (now the University of the Arts) and the National Gallery School in Melbourne, where in 1975 he made his new home, and where he contributed so much to the communities that welcomed him, while becoming Dean at the Victorian College of the Arts.
William Kelly visited Gernika many many times, alone and with his family. And he also worked in many places around the world, many of them places that had been tragically scarred by the senselessness of violence, including Gernika, Hiroshima, Northern Ireland, and South Africa. His vision of art and peace was used to create a school in each of these locations.
He visited Guernica in the late 1990s for the first time, invited by Gernika Gogoratuz and his relationship with the symbolic village portrayed by Pablo Ruiz Picasso continued until his death. Kelly had several exhibitions, including Art Towards Reconciliation (2000) and Humanist Art: Symbolic Places (2003) at the Gernika Peace Museum and at the Casa de Cultura. He also set up and collaborated in the various bi-annual Art and Peace meetings held in Gernika since 2003.
He was one of the two artists that make the drawing of the Gernika Awards for Peace and Reconciliation along with the basque artivist Alex Carrascosa
His artistic performances included Fire and Light at the Plaza of Peacemakers(2001) and Spiritual Figures: Peace Passages at the Fire and Light Plaza(shown during the 5th International Conference of Museums for Peace, held in 2005 in Gernika). These marked a prelude and an epilogue in the way of understanding the relationship between art and peace in our town.
