Antoni Muntadas The Last Ten Minutes II, 1977 Over the past thirty years, the work of Antoni Muntadas (1942) has built up a solid critical view of social structures and the construction of the collective memory by media such as television, the press and the internet, both in Spain and around the world, with particular emphasis on the USA, where he has been living and working since 1971. Muntadas uses video as a critical language, as a space for reflection on the transnational spread of information, and mediated reality in dialogue with geopolitical specificity. His influence on other artists has been crucial, which makes his work fundamental in the understanding of the way contemporary art has approached what the artist himself refers to as the ”media landscape”.

The Last Ten Minutes II presents three monitors showing the final ten minutes of TV programming in three cities of different countries: Washington, Moscow and Kassel. The minutes contain a succession of images that show the uniform ingredients across the media anywhere in the world: the latest news update, the stereotypical figure of the newsreader, national symbols and so on. The images are followed by recordings from the cities’ actual streets and people made by the artist himself. Putting the two recordings together illustrates the contrast between the human and cultural diversity in each different environment and the mundane television broadcast, presented to us as a homogenizing space, a nonplace where the image has become a deterritorialized sign. The video installation is the second version of a different piece, presented the year before at The Kitchen (New York), in which Buenos Aires, São Paulo and New York were the objects of study. It was done by Muntadas specifically for Documenta 6 at Kassel (Germany), a historical exhibition whose artistic director Schneckenburger tried to show up the role art plays in mass media society. The places chosen by Muntadas for this version add one more layer to the reading, as it confronts social realities that were politically opposed during the Cold War with the artistic context of the city of Kassel.
