Certainly, courage was also needed to produce these pieces of furniture that are seen to harbour the intelligence, the hopes, the weaknesses and the ingenuity of the most famous architects that have worked and continue to work in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The melancholic modern intuition of Mackintosh, the visionary precision of Le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand, the revolutionary certainty of Wright, Rietveld’s geometric folly, Asplund’s refined classicism and Albini’s fluctuation between rigour and freedom, shine forth in the I Maestri Collection; it is a sign of the times that banal imitators try at least in part to bask in the reflected glory of this light. The path traced out and taken by Cassina alongside the designers of the subsequent generations is unique as it follows the quest for diversity, to try new things, to take a risk on what still doesn’t seem possible. Here the “new” generations are and always will be Gio Ponti, Vico Magistretti, Mario Bellini, Gianfranco Frattini, Toshiyuki Kita, Paolo Deganello, Gaetano Pesce, Rodolfo Dordoni, Piero Lissoni, Philippe Starck, Jean Nouvel and all the other names that appear in this long tale: because each single person mentioned has been able to interpret their relation with the company and its structure afresh, knowing how to adapt over time to changes in shared techniques and feelings. This could be where Cassina’s capacity to create a new industrial model lies: the ability to combine personalities of very different natures, to hold them to the same design logic until objects that belong to the same order are born. An indefinable order, spread from a series of certainties: the search for utmost quality, continuous testing and adjustment of materials, the perfection of techniques and their execution. But first of all, at the origin of each project is the same invention, through the originality of forms, the novelty of colour, the richness of possible combinations, and most of all the idea that each new product is able to generate new behaviours which correspond to contemporary living.

intro

The Cassina collection is made up by models so paradoxically different that they mesmerize you at first glance. When browsing through the pages of this long history of shapes and images, the most virtuous designs of many designers stand out, but only at the end does a common style emerge: the research for quality that is strictly tied to the international culture of design which, with its desires and ambitions, seeks to reconstruct a new universe of objects for a new vision of living.

Sling chair with polished trivalent chrome plated (CR3) steel frame. Seat and back: — hairy hide (black leather arms).

Le Corbusier, Jeanneret, Perriand 1928  / 1965–2011

This lightweight and compact chair is a counterpoint to the Fauteuil grand confort, more massive, and it is in perfect balance with the table in steel tube and the chaiselongue. There are three versions of this chair which were all designed for different uses: the model that was shown at the Salon d’Automne in 1929, the version created for Villa Church in 1928, and another version created for the 1930 exhibition the Union des Artistes Modernes.

Armchair with polished trivalent chrome plated (CR3) steel frame. Loose cushions with polyurethane foam and polyester padding. Leather upholstery. Yet another timeless classic, one that made design history. Designed in 1928 and shown for the first time at the Salon d’automne, in Paris, in 1929, this was the archetypal armchair in that it expressed all that was new and modern about furniture, which was now beginning to be seen as “domestic equipment”. The careful separation of the caged frame from its inner cushions are a concrete affirmation of the chair’s Rationalist approach. A true classic.

Mat: — hairy hide (black leather headrest); — leather (headrest in black leather Headrest with polyester padding. Designed in 1928 this chair became famous in 1965 with Cassina, the LC4 is the definitive chaise longue: built in a shape designed for relaxation, the chair was created when the three designers teamed together to put man at the centre of their design, taking the idea that form and function should be at the service of relaxation, creating a perfect balance between its geometric purity and its ergonomic intent. The stability of the frame – for any angle of inclination – is guaranteed by the friction through rubber tubes that cover the cross bar of the base.

In formal terms this table references the many “basic supports” created over the centuries in architecture. Its simple almost sculptural base is reminiscent of the works of Max Bill with diagonal support bars cut off at the top being used for its square cross section. The three legs are bound together with a surprising twist given that each block has been created using four pieces of solid wood.

The head of the family for a collection of chairs bearing this name – including an armchair, a small seat and a couch – Cab was designed in answer to deep questions regarding the exact nature of the semantic meaning of furniture. The chairs were conceived with the aim of helping to stretch the body, acting almost as an extension of the body, the frame is made of tubular steel over which a stitched leather cover has been stretched, this is then fixed to the frame and held in place by four zips. The chair is now part of the permanent collection at the New York MoMA.

Black Enamel Steel / Clear Glass

Coffee tables in two sizes, square in shape, with polished trivalent chrome steel legs and steel (CR3) frame enamelled in semigloss black. Clear glass top, thickness 0.6”. This table, in its original form, measured 47.2”x31.5”x27.5”, and appeared as a desk at the Salon d’Automne in Paris in 1929, an integral component of the furniture designed as “Équipement Intérieur d’une Habitation”. The framework was reduced to the barest minimum – chromium-plated tubular legs and lacquered side pieces – and the effect is achieved thanks to the expressiveness of the treatment of these metals.

High stool characterized by three legs “cut” finished, in solid wood finishes: black-stained oak, natural American walnut. Low stool featuring three turned legs, the stool comes in solid wood finishes: black-stained oak, natural American walnut.

Franco Albini 1953 / 2008

Tabouret Méribel. Highly stylised milking stool designed by Charlotte Perriand for her mountain chalet in Méribel in France. This stool was inspired in both its use of simple materials and in its shape by the architecture of interiors typically found in the Alps. Tabouret Berger. Shown for the first time in Tokyo at the Synthèse des arts exhibition in 1955. The version shown here is the lowest stool, which is a stylised version of a shepherd’s milking stool hence its name. This stool can be used alone, or combined with the higher stool, the Méribel, both can also be used as a small table.

Bookshelves in American walnut. Folding frame. The four central shelves are removable. This incredibly simple folding bookcase is typical of Magistretti’s modus operandi in that it was created as the result of an analysis of the product type, followed by a reinterpretation of the sum of its parts, bringing together the different sides and shelves. The resulting design pragmatically plays with diagonal bracing to create support for the shelves and eliminate the side pieces. Less is more.
