museu da casa brasilera design award/ The MCB Design Award, held since 1986, arrives at its 32nd edition accomplishing the goals of valuing the design professionals’ activity alongside the Brazilian industry and incorporating the discussion over a wide range of actions that have been developed in the segment, besides revealing talents all over the country and recognizing professionals and companies. In 2018 the Design Award received 663 creations, which were evaluated by two judging committees. The “Product” categories (“Construction”, “Electronics”, “Lighting”, “Furniture”, “Textiles”, “Transportation” and “Utensils”) were coordinated this year by Levi Girardi, a designer graduated at FAAP-SP, CEO and founding partner of the design and innovation studio Questtonó, with

headquarters in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and New York. The committee was also composed by 16 expert judges who are active in the academic field and market.

Design, with book launchings, workshops and food trucks, besides the already traditional open meeting with the judging committee and winners.

The “Written Work” category, for the second year in a row, was coordinated by Cibele Haddad Taralli, a graduate, master and doctor in Architecture and Urbanism by FAU-USP (1974, 1984 and 1993, respectively) and a professor at graduation and postgraduation courses in Architecture and Design of the same institution. The committee was also composed by 31 expert judges.

The exhibit marks another chapter in the contemporary production of Brazilian design mapped by MCB and brings together the 122 awarded and selected projects in the “Product” and “Written Work” categories, while the Poster Contest exhibit, which used to be held in the first semester, will present 101 posters (1st place, 10 highlights and 90 selected works). For the third consecutive year the visitors will be able to elect their favorite poster through ballot vote.

The opening of the Design Award was reformulated in 2017 by replacing the award ceremony with a festival-like fair of specialized publications in Architecture and

poster contest/ The Poster Contest 2018 was one of the first preparations for the 32nd edition of the MCB Design Award. This year 424 pieces from all over Brazil were submitted, resulting in the choice of the winner, highlights and selected works for the exhibit.

The results showed many peculiarities, from effectiveness to singularity as media that a poster must wield. The winning piece, produced by designer Celso Hartkopf Lopes Filho, from Recife (PE), presents gesture as cultural identity and is composed by a digitally-made illustration mixed with pointillism and painting with primary colors distributed in grains, resulting in a postimpressionist pop with chromatic effect that resembles the flag of the state of Pernambuco. 3/

Among the highlights are posters that showcase the creativity of Brazilians. The creativity of authors Ronaldo Arthur Vidal, Lais Ikoma and Marcelo Siqueira, from São Paulo (SP), brought to the piece a tactile and optic appeal provoked by the printing of the text in bubble wrap, while Rodrigo Fiorin Pinheiro, from ESPM-Sul in Porto Alegre (RS), oriented by Rogerio de Abreu Dorneles, presented a rigid and translucid plan using acrylic and vinyl, mapping a graphic field in which background, figure and texture harmonize. Furthermore, another point that caught the judging committee’s attention were the posters with detachable parts. The piece created by Leonardo Tavares, from Unifil in Londrina (PR), and the work of student Gabriela Pagliusi Gennari, from FAU-USP in São Paulo (SP), invite people

to take information with them. Emblematic everyday objects were also present. Maurício Firmino da Silva Junior and Marcelo José Tavares Silva, from São Paulo (SP), used a flip-flop with nails to show this Brazilian representativeness, while Heitor Calado Simonetti and Fábio Santos Silva, from Universidade Metodista in Piracicaba (SP), oriented by Tomas Sniker, stemmed from a photographic appropriation of the artisanal rug as central image of the poster. Lucas Parra, Marina de Aquino, Andrea Freitas and Maurício Ackermann, from São Paulo (SP), relied on the surrealism of a bird (ovenbird) with a texturized headeye mimicking the serigraphy reticle, while Caio Camarinha, also from São Paulo (SP), through the agility and flexibility of a stamp with superpositions was able to create a project

that can produce originality at each action. The poster created by Rafael Amato Bruno de Lima, from Contagem (MG), presents an interesting composition which underlines fragility and deformity as visual resources, and Felipe da Cunha Ribeiro, from UEMG in Belo Horizonte (MG), oriented by Igor Rios, chromatically worked on a poster that mixes graphic icons and characters, allowing appreciation from a short or long distance. The exhibit of the Poster Contest 2018 happens in November, for the first time along with the exhibit of the 32nd MCB Design Award. As usual there will be public participation and visitors will receive a ballot to vote in their favorite poster.

products categories/ The MCB Design Award has been present for over three decades in the history of Brazilian design, enough time for design professionals to understand its relevance. Each edition brings a landscape of the moment we live in economy and culture, besides being an important place to discuss the conception of each piece or product that will be part of people’s lives. And this discussion brings together high-level professionals, among colleagues from the Design market and the academy, which compose our body of judges. This year we finally achieved a balance between genders with the same number of male and female judges, which has much enriched the process due to very different and judicious views on each theme. We’re glad! In addition to the two stages of traditional judging, the first one 16/

being digital and the second one having the actual pieces at the judges’ disposal, we had the opportunity to propose yet a third session. During the “Intervention” stage, all the judges could question the decisions previously made by the members of each category, including those of already awarded projects. An exercise of humbleness and openness to the views of colleagues, this innovation in the judging process allowed an even more transversal and comprehensive analysis, result of a more systemic and rich view of Design that takes into consideration different perspectives beyond each one’s expertise. Still in regard of the process, this year we’ll repeat the same successful formula of last edition. During the exhibit opening, the judges will be at the public’s

disposal to promote an open and informal discussion about the decisions made and to give feedbacks about rewarding or not a given project. Thus, we’ll continue to promote this rich formation process bringing authors together with their public and ever-constructive criticism, which invariably results in the improvement of Design production in Brazil. Regarding the presented projects, we watched a surprising evolution in the amount and quality of the works submitted to the “Electronics” and “Utensils” categories, probably result of a resumption of these so important segments of our economy. We saw products of international relevance, solutions that result from a judicial observation of habits and behaviors of the Brazilian consumer. The “Lighting” and “Furniture” categories historically have the higher representativeness

The awarded and selected products and systems in this edition stand out by the way they fit into new contexts and use experiences. Most projects were destined to the internal coating and finish segment, in residential or commercial properties. Traditional or usual construction materials such as concrete, ceramics, porcelain tile, and hydraulic tile are subtly reinterpreted. The perception and interaction occur through touch, in textures, and vision, in composition games of light

and shadow, fullness and emptiness, and patterns. The greatest highlight is the first place, which combined in a balanced way a good design to an improvement to the product’s usability. The “Prototype” modality, as important as the “Product” one for allowing the presentation of new ideas, experimentations, processes, technologies, and innovations to the segment, had no selected works in this edition of the Award. 21/

The system composed by apparent pulleys and sliding door rail stands out by its exquisite finish and for offering sliding through light, smooth touch. The damping, another quality to be highlighted, is provided by an oil piston built in the rail.

This product gathers qualities and features that make it worthy of the first place of this category.

Having a light appearance and elegant shapes, and being available in different colors, its easy assembly consists in

fixating aluminum pieces on the wall and then just fitting the rail and system. It allows full opening of the span without losing space. It can be used in both residential and commercial projects.

A concrete module with translucid properties that allows light to pass through cross-shaped polymers incrusted in the piece. The contrast between opacity and clearness results in a surprising, unexpected aspect which lets us glimpse figures, shadows and colors in a singular experience with this material. It’s a new look on the use of concrete by proposing a product that joins innovation and beauty. 24/

This project’s highlight is the material used to produce the sink, which was manufactured from flagstone-effect porcelain tiles with high precision in the cutting and joining of the elements. Two planes that converge towards the drainage center provide the visual lightness

of the piece. The central slit ensures water flow, collected later by a hidden groove, and acts as a guide for a wooden tray with porcelain tile center for soap and accessories. The fixation is obtained through support brackets on the wall.

Composed by two types of plates, this wall covering made of liquid mortar has excellent superficial finish, praising the chosen material itself. Another aspect worth noting is the visual dynamism provided by the positioning of the pieces, light incidence, observer’s position, and optical effect of the design. Developed from the study of concrete and kinetic art movements, especially those of plastic artist Willys de Castro. 26/

Beyond the rise in the number of subscriptions for this category, this edition is also marked by the increase in quality of the assessed projects. Whether domestic, personal or corporative applications, we verified the maturity of both the industry and professionals regarding the development of objects with material and aesthetical quality, providing solutions and finishes to compete at a global level. We are left with the provocation for this tendency to be maintained, and may the next edition challenge us even more when choosing the winners among many good projects. 31/

The project’s merit is bringing a more humanized language to a usually aggressive product, used at a time when women are fragilized – gynecologic exams and procedures. Besides the need for comfort of both patient and health professional, the project addresses a welcoming, cozy aesthetics, supported by wide research and a more delicate, feminine look to an extremely technical product.

The product deserves praise as it incorporates Braille, facilitating cooking by people with visual impairment. Aesthetically

This year’s selection and award seek to showcase the wide Brazilian production, with pieces of high design quality both in industrial scale and small series. The jury understands that the award’s role is honoring good production, as well as indicating what can be important to culture and industrial production. We also seek to show a wide range of prices, with serial lowcost, excellent-quality products sided with exclusive, more restrictive pieces. We noticed a larger number of subscriptions of students and prototypes, which was understood as the growing validation of the award as a tool

of promotion of new talents. For those initiating their careers, presenting themselves to the industry and public is essential. We wish to increase the number of students’ works. Also, there was a decrease in professional, industrial and public lighting equipment. Because of that we brought a larger number of invited pieces to endure public evaluation The three awarded works are complementary: one by a Brazilian designer working abroad, one showcasing the nation’s greatest industrial quality and one that values our artisanal memory, our woods and poetries.

These three should represent the best of our production. The jury long debated about this order: privileging the industrial, the beautiful, the magic, the bold vs. the elegant, and coming to a decision involved the entire group. It’s the synthesis of this selection. We believe the current production shows maturity and originality. We wish the award promotes good design, good industry. We hope MCB keeps promoting the approach between designers and the industry, those who provide and those who consume. Receiving such prize is encouragement, recognition, competitiveness. 43/

Amarcord quickly captivated the jury. The creative use of light refraction results in the visualization of the dome as a diffusing element. The dome, when the light is off, is completely transparent. When it’s on, the LED lighting seems to make it translucid, like a lamp. The dimmable control softens the light intensity making its use more flexible. With elegant application of new technologies; minuscule, potent light sources; and a certain magic that surprises us, this lamp is pleasant in many ways. It shows us precise, sophisticated digital lighting. It has an exquisite, classic silhouette, precise proportions and high quality technological production, without ornamental excess.

2nd place lighting/ Lanterna

piece. The typical texture refers to the fabrics of Japanese lamps, or even to the gas lamps that used to mesmerize us in farms or carnivals. With its technical accuracy and paying homage to traditional elements, it doesn’t seem recurrent, but classic. The piece can be used individually or in various configurations, being very flexible in its use.

We believe this was the first time we saw the professional use of 3D printing, different from its application during the creative process, here as a finished product. so. Two pieces were presented that illustrate different plastic possibilities: one received the third prize and the other was selected for the exhibit. The awarded piece shows a beautiful marquetry work, while the second is soberer and more versatile, less colorful, but very elegant.

Luiza shows us the qualities of Brazilian wood and the work we do to honor it. With its noble material turned into support, composition, ornament, it keeps us cozy company. nk55mk01 is part of a wider project by Viabizzuno, which developed a very sophisticated system of modular components that allows a range of compositions. Designers and architects from all over the world were invited to compose the complementary elements that define the many variants. The selected creation echoes the first filament lamps, creating a nostalgic, modern combination. The pierced metallic cylinder that distributes the light is subtly capsuled in a borosilicate glass dome that controls its tone like an ancient amp valve.

Aware of our responsibility, we the judging committee established the parameters of evaluation that we consider the most important to the subscribed products and prototypes. Concept, design, creativity, originality and ergonomics combined with

constructive and technological solutions were the guides to our selection. Besides the traditional residential segment, we tried to give attention to projects aimed at social and institutional furniture fields to foment future social, collective and educational actions and even DIY. Cadeira AVA’s main raw material is wood. The piece’s language is techno-organic by the union of digital technology and handmade, resulting in refined ergonomics. The meeting points between structure, seat and back rest, obtained by machining, create line and outline fluidity, in line with the pattern of the wood. The result is great precision in execution. The three-dimensionality of the chair is a game of revealed thickness and fittings. This in addition to the construction technique that makes good use of the wood and results in strong finger jointing draws the attention of the observer beyond recognizing it as furniture.

Mandacaru is more than a coat rack, it’s a contemporary, multifunctional piece of furniture with a fun side: it’s a rack, a table, a stool and/or a lamp depending on the accessories. The possibility to combine the three accessories to the main piece and the different positions made possible by the system of bolt-free fitting make it perfect for the different contemporary ways of living. The piece is integrally made in wood worked in the classic carpentry molds, valuing pure fittings and the consequent interaction of user and piece. The various finishes in ebony and other Brazilian woods gives a greater personality to Mandacaru. 68/

It’s composed by steel tie rods and joints in wood cubes made by cutting rafters. Its building process is simple, and the materials are easy to find, turning it into an accessible project possible to be build anywhere in the world. Despite its simplicity, the result is rugged and has a strong aesthetical appeal due to the modularity of the elements. Easy to assemble and disassemble, its structure makes compaction for transportation easy, and the adjustment between tie rods and wood cubes allows different sitting positions. 75/

The creative process presents authorial quality to the confection of textiles related to the local community of Bertioga, in the shore of the state of São Paulo. A conscious development in process and production creation, using native plants with natural pigment such as carqueja, tannins, eucalypt, red onion and mastic, among other colors produced by reusing water, making use of local labor and its traditional knowledge combined with research, investigation of new practices for textile elaboration.

Fishing boat produced by rotomolding, with excellent finish and very well-thought design. Each structure, cut, recess and compartment enjoy the entire hull for a specific purpose. The interfaces are designed to attend to the user. Dry compartments ensure clothes, equipment and even a battery safe from water. The seat is adjustable and there is a propelling set composed by pedals, mast and propeller, which is in front of the pilot. To facilitate transportation in and out of water by only one person, Gamefish has a kind of retractile landing gear, in the stern of the boat, a unique characteristic. The product was designed, developed and built in Brazil, which makes us very proud. 93/

Design has the important role of bringing intelligent, practical and quality solutions. This prototype goes beyond, promoting inclusion to users, Family and friends. The national Market deserved a product to this end, which caught our attention and deserved the 1st place. Developed to the project Heróis sobre Rodas (Heroes on Wheels), the product’s goal is promoting inclusion in street races, valuing self-esteem and becoming a resilience tool to all its users. A result of national design, it’s a compact, light, easy-to-transport product with a folding system and a seat covered by a padded, waterproof fabric, which brings comfort to the user. The 5-point seat belt and the feet platform with stripes ensure safety, relying yet on a rear suspension that improves the tricycle’s performance on rough terrain, providing more comfort to both the user and the conductor.

In the “Utensils” category of this MCB Design Award’s edition, we selected 11 products and 4 prototypes that represent different project typologies and proposals, whose main features were appointed individually. In the first stage, the choice of products and prototypes that stood out happened through evaluation of the presented information about each one regarding material use and production process, market characteristics and configuration, considering aesthetical, functional and ergonomic aspects. In the second stage, we were able to get in direct touch with the objects and assess them using judicious analysis of the presented proposition, through verification of its features, seeking to recognize

innovation character of the project’s process and/or result. It’s worth noting that only after evaluation and selection by the jury were we able to know which companies and designers stood out. We could then realize the relevance of industrial poles in the South of the country, that presented a high volume of releases and products with quality, a result of investment in Design. The awarded and selected pieces have proposals, solutions and ideas that involve different questions to be highlighted, such as concern with ergonomics and usability, production challenges, attention to adequate use of materials, care with the sensorial characteristics perceived when handling the product/prototype, etc. Under “Products” we find

pieces that are part of people’s day-to-day in their domestic, work or leisure environments. They’re relatively common objects that presented improvements and concern with aesthetical and finish aspects, with their usability pointing to a better understanding of use situation, quality of experience and thus needs, desires and new ways of enjoyment from this context. Under “Prototypes” we highlighted from pieces whose purpose is assessing the solution proposed by the industry – in terms of technical, ergonomic, use, and aesthetical performance – in a stage prior to production until product proposals that reflect academic investigation and show development potential.

It’s a hospital cart designed in Brazil that can be used in many patient support situations, as well as different environments (nursing homes, clinics and hospitals). This product’s great advantage is its fabrication technology, bringing roto-molding to the production of hospital equipment. The product’s lightness and maneuver easiness are highlights, but we recommend more attention to some details and accessories, such as the roller support and the metal tray, regarding shape and dimension. It’s an innovative product in this sense and because of that it deserved this honorable mention.

written works categories/ The MCB award to written works, published and unpublished, annually grants distinction to the intellectual production of design research and practices, being a contest of the greatest importance to the circulation of ideas and reflections in academia and the publishing segment.

The body of awarded works stands out for original and contributive approaches to valuing of design as reference to education and practice, for the merit of achieved results and for the openness to the promotion of new studies and researches, not leaving aside the intersections and inputs from other applied social sciences that collaborate to design thinking.

The “Unpublished” awarded works had a larger number of subscriptions this year and are represented in three works that deserve distinction, a result of researches that were unanimously chosen by the jury. They represent a qualitative extract of the current Brazilian academic production about Design, with recognition of institutions, students and advisors.

Whereas the editorial production that composes the “Published works” category is represented

The exquisite critic essays by Juliana Suzuki and Nilce Arravechia contribute to the book’s success, not forgetting to mention the family members, guardians of the time capsule open with this edition. Authors comment and discuss, from wide historic documentation and personal records in travel journals, the formative trajectory and work consolidation of this professional (1905-1946). A discrete character unknown to the great public, he produced in a short time an expressive set of buildings that surprise for their language and the unison dialogue between architecture and interior design, clearly identified with the art déco movement from the 1920-1940s and the more pure-


lined modernism. The book shows us a production of masters who integrated architecture and design – inside and out, judiciously and to the minimal details, dedicating to the design from furniture to lock, from 1:1 lighting to façade perspective – and presents the author’s systemic, integrating conception, which can be seen in his urban projects of residential, institutional and cultural buildings. The unprecedented material is presented in bilingual edition with excellent editorial and graphic quality, bringing competent narratives about project and production in architecture and interior design. The abundant iconographic documentation was generously and carefully selected and makes reading accessible and pleasurable, an original, complex time portrayal of the modernist innovations that coexist with conservative solutions and the judicious details of demands. 121/

Launched by Instituto Sergio Rodrigues, this bilingual work edited in exquisite graphic project presents essays and chronicles written by Sergio Rodrigues during the 1950-1960s for Módulo and Senhor magazines, a little-known side of the designer. It brings a selection of nine texts, illustrated with historic pictures and reproductions of furniture and interior architecture croquis designed by him, being each text followed by writings from curator Afonso Luz, that contextualize the time portrayed presenting references, notes e critic essays that also show the

little-known and revolutionary work of Sergio Rodrigues as an architect. Luz presents an understanding of the social, cultural and political moment in which each work is located, deepening concepts and showing Sergio’s methodology for project conception, emphasizing experimentation during the process. He creates counterpoints to Sergio’s singular way of approaching his work, his irony when dealing with polemic subjects and his relationship with clients. He also highlights the designer’s proposal for industrialization both in architecture and furnishing, not abandoning however artisanal production processes. The book innovates by focusing not only Sergio’s furniture, but also his texts with precious references that clarify historic contexts and help us understand his thinking, contributing to the designer’s historiography. It comes with a facsimile of the catalogue of the “Casa individual pré-fabricada” exhibit, at MAM Rio in March, 1960.

reflection about the current ways of living, in which the house and their inhabitants (especially women) inspire analysis under different points of view. It addresses through competent textual and visual narratives the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo throughout a time trajectory, with emphasis in the institutional graphic signature and its transformations throughout time. It’s worth noting that the discussion about graphic memory and material culture in Brazilian design is an important contemporary theme, and its relationship with public Museological institutions’ identity is a valuable contribution. In this work the author demon-

strates effort in defining concepts and differences between visual and graphic signatures, which can serve as a reference to other works with similar theme or time frames, including those prior to the institutionalization of the Design field in Brazil. The consistency of the thesis is manifested in its clear methodology, extending itself to appendices and annexes and exposing a rigorous research procedure, anchored in primary sources and the accurate image selection represented by precious synthesis that permeate the entire volume.
