papirklip by cynthia mckeen Danish-American artist Cynthia McKeen has been working in acrylics, watercolor, ink, paper and photography for over 40 years. Under the name of Proongily, she spent a number of years in store, graphic, interior and exhibit design before changing to the die cut and custom paper cutting business in the late 80's. McKeen's influence comes from her dear Danish grandmother who taught her the intricate art of paper cutting or papirklip. Her paper work has sold in museum stores across the country, and her work in a variety of mediums has been shown in the United States and Japan.

BRINGing QUALITY DANISH DESIGN TO AMERICAN CHILDREN AND FAMILIES

maileg
What's the secret to Maileg's magic? The answer is unexpected materials, fun fabrics, quirky designs and a quite obsessive attention to detail. Their products are made as traditionally as possible with natural materials. Maileg designs are amusing and playful with whimsical touches of old fashioned Scandinavia. Every detail that goes into each item is made with love and admiration. Hand knitted dresses and hand stitched eyes fill the toys with stories of their own and personalities that bring them to life. Of course the toys do not talk, but they will surely make you giggle with joy!
1. Santa with Sack, micro, #4419 • $20.00 This is a great holiday display item. Santa's sack is perfect for delivering a gift. It is also a great place for a child to put their Christmas list for Santa!

the dagmar cross necklace
For those of Danish heritage, the Dagmar cross is a popular gift for christenings (baptisms), confirmations, and weddings. Several hundred years before Denmark officially became a Christian country in 900 AD, missionaries came to preach about Christianity. They often brought crosses which they wore to show their new faith. The crosses were made of gold, silver or bronze. Many were placed in churches or buried with their owners. Of the few that survive today, one of the most elaborate and beautiful is known as the Dagmar Cross. The ancient origin makes this cross truly a treasure for all Christians.

BJØRN WIINBLAD
Bjørn Wiinblad is an artist who embraced it all. One-off ceramics, plaques, posters, theatrical costumes, stage design, tapestries and large sculptures. From the smallest to the largest. From the hand-made to the mass-produced. Like some exotic bird he landed in 1945 in the midst of Danish art and design history. From there he left his clear imprint on the visual culture of the coming decades with his fantastical, always recognizable line and style. As a phenomenal image-maker Wiinblad created a magical universe that later became part of our lives and memories. This catalogue invites you into Wiinblad’s world – a world of beauty and sensuality, of dream and luxury. It tells the story of Wiinblad, his art and life and his idiosyncratic position in the larger narrative of art and design history.

Courage and Defiance, by Sibert Honor author Deborah Hopkinson, brings to life the remarkable story of the Danish resistance and rescue of over 7,000 Jews during WWII. When the Nazis invaded Denmark on Tuesday, April 9, 1940, the people of this tiny country to the north of Germany awoke to a devastating surprise. The government of Denmark surrendered quietly, and the Danes were ordered to go about their daily lives as if nothing had changed. But everything had changed. With her talent for digging deep in her research and weaving real voices into her narratives, Hopkinson reveals the thrilling truth behind one of WWII's most daring resistance movements. #4725 • $17.99 8. NEW! The Simple Gift of Walnut Grove is a documentary about the life of an early 20th century Danish immigrant named Hans Hansen (1876-1953), as told by his son, 96-year-old Walter Hansen. Hans emigrated from Denmark to the United States in 1899 and built a farm out of the native timber he found alongside a marginal piece of land on the Cedar River near West Branch, Iowa. Within Walter’s soft-spoken account emerges the dynamic of a father-son relationship forged under the harsh conditions of the early Midwestern settlement. The film’s powerful soundtrack includes works performed by Victor Borge and the Danish String Quartet. 18 minutes. This film, by John Richard and produced by the Museum of Danish America, is the featured work played in the Museum of Danish America's Multimedia Room. The film received seven film festival awards. #4639 • $14.95
