The Museum of Danish America celebrates Danish roots and American dreams. The Museum of Danish America is the national museum dedicated to DanishAmerican experience. Its collection and exhibitions are housed in a magnificent half-timbered building in Elk Horn, Iowa, just six minutes from Interstate 80.. The 30.-acre Jens Jensen Prairie Landscape Park surrounds the museum building, offering walking trails through a restored native prairie. The museum’s Genealogy Center collects resources to trace Danish immigrants and their families in both Denmark and the United States. The museum Design Store and this catalog reflect the spirit of Danish culture and include the work of Danish and Danish-American artists, artisans, and product designers. She designs around the clock; even while traveling she carries her notebook where inspirations turn into drawings on the spot. She is gifted with a particularly quaint design style that is admired around the world. Dorthe has created illustrations for books, magazines, and even TV stations have asked her to create special toys for children’s channels. Dorthe Mailil has won several design prizes for her fantastic designs and has proudly presented Maileg in renowned art galleries around the world, including: Louvre Paris, Caixa Forum Barcelona and MoMA New York. the dagmar cross necklace
For those of Danish heritage, the Dagmar cross is a popular gift for christenings, confirmations, and weddings. Several hundred years before Denmark officially became a Christian country in 900 AD, missionaries came to preach about Christianity. They often brought crosses which they wore to show their new faith. The crosses were made of gold, silver or bronze. Many were placed in churches or buried with their owners. Of the few that survive today, one of the most elaborate and beautiful is known as the Dagmar Cross. The ancient origin makes this cross truly a treasure for all Christians.
