The Museum of Danish America celebrates Danish roots and American dreams.

The Museum of Danish America is the national museum dedicated to DanishAmerican experience. Its collection and exhibitions are housed in a magnificent half-timbered museum building in Elk Horn, Iowa, just six minutes from Interstate 80. The 30acre Jens Jensen Prairie Landscape Park surrounds the museum building, offering walking trails through a restored native prairie. The museum’s Genealogy Center collects resources to trace Danish immigrants and their families in both Denmark and the United States.

The museum shop and this catalog reflect the spirit of Danish culture and include the work of Danish and Danish-American artists, artisans, and product designers.

BY PIet HeIn (1905-1996) – tHe rAtIonAL IdeALIst Piet Hein has been called a universalist, with work encompassing scientific publications, essays, poetry and architecture. The special Piet Hein touch is the superiority of the form in relation to the objectives, the medium and – for that matter – the contents.

The first time Piet Hein utilized the super ellipse was in the design of Sergels Torv in Stockholm in 1959.

In the years that followed he toyed with other uses for this harmonic figure, leading to the Super Egg, sports arenas, tables, textiles and many other fascinating items. on tHe cover: The Super Egg – a threedimensional expression of the super ellipse formula. The Super Egg was “laid” for the first time in 1965. It is able to stand upright on both ends – without cheating.

Snowflower Lamps - NEW! Being in continuous connection with its surroundings, the Snowflower lamp from Danish designers Mencke and Vagnby hovers in the air, moving with each breeze or touch to create a dynamic interaction display. It’s shaped from 150 identical lightweight “petals” that guide light away from the bulb in an artistic expression of “a crisp and blue skied winter day“, as its creators explain. A poetic description from the designers give us an idea of the atmosphere created around this simple, beautiful piece of lighting: The Snowflower is drawn with the brushes of light and shade, creating a vibrant translucent pattern, like rays of sun, breezing through a leafy crown. The final touch of gravity performs perfect curvatures on the slender design of Mencke & Vagnby.

The light from the Snowflower lamp is 100% glare free and can be fitted with new energy saving bulbs as well as traditional ones. Materials shape this self-assembly lamp into an elegant yet playful design – polystyrene petals are carefully placed on a skeleton of 30 ribs connected by a bottom and top ring – all surrounding a lamp holder with a 3 meter long textile power cord. SUPER-EGG – New! The Super-Egg is the three dimensional expression of the SUPERELLIPSE-formula. The Super-Egg was “laid” for the first time in 1965 at manufacturer Skjøde in Skjern.

The Super-Egg immediately became very popular, and became a major article of export especially in the USA. The company, which made the Super-Egg in those days had to pick an international name, and which then was “The Super-Egg World Center”. Baltic amber was created approximately 40-50 million years ago. Simultaneously amber inclusions were created. This process took place mostly in the thick, damp forests of subtropical and moderate climates. The trees were releasing solid resin, which was dropping continuously and trapping parts of plants and insects.

Some species of insects are found in amber more often than others. Insects which were not attracted or even deterred by the smell of resin, naturally are very rare in amber inclusions. If we look through museum collections as well as private amber inclusion collections 90% of them consist of insect inclusions.

Thanks to amber inclusions we are able to learn about the world millions of years ago. They contribute hugely to the exploration of world history and help us to unravel the secrets of mother Earth.

The species found in amber are extinct but most have a modern counterpart in the current world.

Based on these findings researchers are building genealogical trees, looking for similarities between species and causes of extinction.

Note: The vast majority of amber inclusions are no larger than 2 mm.

The cheerful, sweet Hoptimists were originally designed

by Danish cabinetmaker Hans Gustav Ehrenreich (1917-1984) in 1968. In keeping with the spirit of the day, his figures were characterized by their bright colors and rounded shapes. Ehrenreich participated at several international exhibitions, receiving many honors for his 1 craftsmanship both at home in Denmark and abroad.

The Hoptimists were originally produced from 1968–1974. In 2009, designer Lotte Steffensen and the Hoptimist company relaunched the worldfamous Hoptimists, in consultation with Ehrenreich’s son Jørn Ehrenreich. For Lotte, it was important for the Hoptimists to be as authentic and in the spirit of Ehrenreich as possible.
