Welcome Dear Friends, On behalf of the Board of Trustees, staff, and volunteers, we’d like to welcome you to the 19th annual Museum of Glass Red Hot. We look forward to a wonderful time celebrating our shared passion for glass and glassmaking and raising proceeds to benefit the Museum’s youth and community programs. Red Hot 2021 comes at an exciting time for MOG. The Museum is prepping for a landmark year in 2022, which marks the Museum’s 20th anniversary. Additionally, Museum of Glass, in partnership with the city of Tacoma, will host the 2022 international Glass Art Society Conference in May. Both are milestones in the history of the Museum that we can’t wait to share with you, our community. We’re also excited to welcome revered artist Richard Royal to the MOG Hot Shop for a live, off-the-pipe auction for those attending the Red Hot Soiree in person. We thank Richard for his participation and extend gratitude to the many artists who donated to the event. Finally, we share our deepest gratitude to you all for joining us.

on the mic LAURA MICHALEK Auctioneer Tacoma-based auctioneer Laura Michalek has an eclectic background, including time spent as the owner of vintage modern furniture stores in Seattle. She was the youngest winner in the history of the Chicago Marathon, completing the feat at 15. She now channels that drive into helping non-profits meet their fundraising goals.

KATIE BUCKINGHAM Auction Emcee Katie Buckingham is the Curator at Museum of Glass and would argue that she has one of the best jobs at MOG—developing exhibitions, researching collections, and coordinating the Visiting Artist Residency Program. She supports our local museum community as the President of the Washington Museum Association.

HEATHER CORNELIUS Off-the-pipe Emcee Heather Cornelius is an independent artist teaching and creating ceramic art in Tacoma. Her goal is to transform the everyday experience by reimagining mundane manufactured items into quality objects containing energy and identity that can last a lifetime. Photo by Trevor Foyston. 6

featured hot Shop artist RICHARD ROYAL A native of the Northwest and resident of Seattle, Richard Royal is recognized internationally as one of the most talented glassblowers of the Studio Glass movement. His sensitivity and natural affinity towards the material reveal themselves within his extensive body of work. Royal’s artistic approach combines fluidity and bold abundance to deliver gracefully attenuated pieces that speak of their elegance and sculptural verticality. Royal will be creating a piece from his Diamond Cut series for tonight's off-the-pipe auction. This body of work shows the surface of the piece while simultaneously exposing its inner layers. This series has evolved over the past 40 years and is now about color and form, expressing joy and spontaneity, revealing the integration of the “inner” and “outer” self through time and growth.

TANNER WEISS LIVE AUCTION • BIDDING BEGINS AT 7:30 PM

Skyscraper $2,535 Based in Seattle, Tanner Weiss creates vessels that combine engraving with blown glass. Using the formality of line and line development, he has created a vocabulary of twodimensional applications that adorn three-dimensional objects. Weiss has worked for artists such as Jen Elek and Jeremy Bert, Janusz Poźniak, Megan Stelljes, Martin Blank, and Matteo Tagliapietra. Skyscraper is an elegant example of Weiss’ exploration of the visual impact of line, in this instance through the use of finely interlaced cane. This method of color addition contrasts beautifully with his method of subtraction by engraving.

Gray resides in Los Angeles and is a Professor of Art at California State University, San Bernardino and Resident Evaluator on the ongoing Netflix series Blown Away. PRESTON SINGLETARY AND NANCY CALLAN LIVE AUCTION • BIDDING BEGINS AT 7:30 PM

Raven in His Canoe $18,000 The art of Preston Singletary has become synonymous with the relationship between European glassblowing traditions and Northwest Native art. Says Singletary, “My work …has helped advocate on the behalf of all Indigenous people—affirming that we are still here—and declaring who we are through our art in connection to our culture.” Nancy Callan’s artistic voice as a sculptor reflects her pursuit of work created through a language of energetic cane pattern work, “The quest for the perfect form matched with the ideal surface, color, or pattern is an ongoing challenge. But most exciting are the new possibilities that open up through experimentation.” Raven in His Canoe is a unique collaboration, exemplifying the strengths of these voices.

ETHAN STERN $7,800 Pushing glass beyond the anatomy of the vessel, Ethan Stern’s work is an ongoing exploration of abstraction, color, texture, and light. He earned his Associates Degree in Ceramics at TAFE College in Brisbane Australia and his BFA in Sculpture and Glass from Alfred University in New York. Although glass typically reflects light, in Dark Light Stern is drawn to a richer, more luminous effect that can be achieved by carving and engraving the surface. These engraved marks, like the stroke of a paintbrush on canvas or a finger pushed into clay, leave evidence of the artist's hand and are undeniably connected to his process and the nature of the material itself.

He received a BFA in glass from California College of Arts in 2004. Abright maintains a studio in Oakland, California. Abright is highly acclaimed for blown glass and painted portrait sculptures like Untitled Bust. Abright believes that the physicality of sculpture lends more weight as a form of documentation than photography or written essays and articles. The intention of this gritty, lifelike work is to raise awareness of social issues in neglected, impoverished, and war-torn countries.

thank you Red Hot involves the combined efforts of many Museum staff, volunteers, and board members. We are so very grateful for your devotion and support of MOG. We’d also like to thank Richard Royal for being our featured artist of the evening and providing a glimpse of what makes MOG's Hot Shop so special—being able to engage with artists as they create work. And, we would not be here tonight without the generous donations from artists from around the world who have found a home and a place to experiment at MOG. We know the pandemic has greatly impacted the artist community and we are grateful for your incredible contributions. And, our most heartfelt thank you to our guests for bringing your passion for glass to Red Hot 2021. Your participation is what enables the Museum to pursue our vision as a signature glassmaking venue shaping the future of glass. Thank you! 53
