Dear Friends, Welcome to Museum of Glass Red Hot Gala 2019! On behalf of the Board of Trustees, staff, and volunteers, we thank you for being here tonight. We look forward to a wonderful evening of celebrating our shared passion for glass and glassmaking. Last year we offered you a glimpse of Preston Singletary: Raven and the Box of Daylight, which just left us after a remarkable year. Today we are readying two new groundbreaking exhibitions that we hope you’ll return to enjoy — Richard Marquis: Keepers and Transparency: An LGBTQ+ Glass Art Exhibition — opening on September 28 and October 12, respectively. This year also marks a transition for MOG, as we welcome Walt Riehl as our new Board of Trustees Chair, taking over from Gail Weyerhaeuser. Tonight we are proud to recognize Gail and Bill as our Honorary Chairs for this year’s gala. Please enjoy the program this evening and join us for a live demonstration with John Kiley and Dante Marioni at the Hot Shop After Party. We extend our deepest gratitude to our donating artists and to you all for joining us. DEBBIE LENK Executive Director

HOT SHOP AFTER PARTY featuring John Kiley and Dante Marioni John Kiley uses primary geometric forms for his glass sculptures, often balancing on edge and seeming to defy gravity. A native of Seattle, he began his professional career at the age of 19 at Glass Eye Studio and was a gaffer on Dale Chihuly’s team in the late 1990s. Kiley also worked as a principal assistant to Lino Tagliapietra from 1994–2011 when he became the Glass Director at the Schack Art Center in Everett, Washington. Dante Marioni is known for his mastery of Venetian glassblowing techniques. His elegant vessels are compelling; with bold colors, striking geometry, graceful forms, and impeccable finishes. His work can be found in major collections and museums throughout the world. Witness this exciting collaboration tonight at the hottest after party in town as they create a unique work of art to be auctioned off the pipe!

FLUENT STEPS Museum of Glass’s iconic installation, Fluent Steps, celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Designed to capture the play of light and water echoing the Pacific Northwest’s unique environment, artist Martin Blank intended for the installation to serve as a gift to the public as part of the Museum’s Permanent Collection. Completed on April 18, 2009, the sculpture celebrates the many moods of water through four small islands of glass — Cascades, Echo, Crystal Skin, and Wisps — and was inspired in part by the Museum’s location on the Thea Foss Waterway. In the Hot Shop, Blank was given the freedom to pursue his wildest dreams, where he ventured beyond the representational and into the abstract. At the end of a five-day residency in 2007, he presented his first sketch, in glass, of the vision that would become Fluent Steps. We thank you, Martin, for sharing your vision and generosity with us. Photo by Chuck Lysen.

PRESTON SINGLETARY Feasting Spoon $18,000 The art of Preston Singletary has become synonymous with the relationship between European glassblowing traditions and Northwest Native art. His artworks feature themes of transformation, animal spirits, and shamanism through elegant blown glass forms and mystical sand-carved Tlingit designs. The front has a reclining anthropomorphic figure symbolizing transformation or duality. This form is inspired by tradition, but informed by a modernist sensibility. prestonsingletary.com

O'Neill's work is an investigation of natural phenomenon and serves as a vehicle to highlight physical forces on a macroscopic scale, both literally and allegorically. studiomanufact.com

CLAIRE KELLY Blue Beach Ball ii $5,500 Claire Kelly’s work is an exploration of the language of line, pattern, and color. Blue Beach Ball ii was created during her 2018 residency at Museum of Glass, where she focused on expanding her aesthetic vocabulary and maximizing the effects of her cane and murrine patterns. The contrast between the bright, densely colored pinwheels and light blue background exemplifies the experimentation accomplished during her residency. Based in Providence, Rhode Island, Kelly worked with acclaimed glass artist Toots Zynsky before starting her own studio. Her work is inspired by the unconventional forms and patterns of mid-century Venetian Maestri Napoleone Martinuzzi and Carlo Scarpa. clairekellyglass.com

JEAN-PIERRE CANLIS
Jean-Pierre Canlis earned a BFA from the School of Art and Design at Alfred University in New York and worked with Dale Chihuly before pursuing his own business, Canlis Glass. Grey’s Harbor Swell represents the beauty of a wave early in its life, once it sorts itself out in the deep ocean, but before it breaks in shallow waters. Its gentle curve evokes the simplicity and strength of the ocean. Canlis's technical ability allows his work to connect his innate curiosity with work that evokes a personal narrative. canlisglass.com

DAVIDE SALVADORE Tre Bocche $4,000 Davide Salvadore was born into a family of glassworkers in Murano, Italy. At a very early age, he began following his grandfather into Murano’s furnaces. In 1987, he founded his own studio where he mixes flameworking and furnace techniques in new ways. As a result of his ingenuity and the inventiveness of his creations, Salvadore’s glass design and vibrant murrine patterns have become signatures of his artistic oeuvre. In 1998, Salvadore made the decision to turn away from traditional, functional glasswork. Around the same time, he began demonstrating his murrine technique in the United States, becoming part of the Studio Glass movement. davidesalvadore.com

DH MCNABB
DH McNabb uses traditional Venetian glassblowing techniques to create mixed media pieces and installations that use glass in new and innovative ways. Topographical Horizon Series: Badlands II – Sunrise Lick 2018 was inspired by the panoramic views and picturesque sunsets McNabb observed in his rearview mirror while driving across the United States for his July 2018 residency at MOG. He earned his MFA from Rhode Island School of Design and has worked with Stephen Powell, Lino Tagliapietra, and Dale Chihuly, along with others, each of whom have helped him negotiate his practice. “I have a memory from all these experiences, a memory though a material. AUCTION RULES AND INFORMATION 1. In accordance with laws of the State of Washington, a bid acknowledged by the live auctioneer is a legal contract to purchase the item and a bid acknowledged by the silent auction official as the top bid is a legal contract to purchase that silent auction item. By bidding in the live or silent auction, each bidder agrees to abide by the auction rules here stated. 2. The BANK will open to receive payments beginning at 9:00 pm. Please pay for all purchases before 10:30 pm. We will gladly accept your payment by cash, personal or corporate check, VISA, American Express, MasterCard, or Discover. Please make all checks payable to Museum of Glass. A receipt suitable for tax purposes will be mailed to you following the event. All purchases/transactions at Red Hot are exempt from sales tax. All other taxes and licenses are the responsibility of the purchaser. 4. Special thank you to Gail and Bill Weyerhaeuser for serving as Honorary Chairs for tonight’s gala, and to Gail for her long-time service as Board of Trustees Chair.
thank you
We also thank John Kiley and Dante Marioni for continuing the party in the Hot Shop and providing a glimpse of what makes MOG so special — being able to engage with artists as they create work. And we would not be here tonight without the generous contributions of artists from around the world who have found a home, a place to experiment, or collaborate at MOG. Red Hot involves the combined efforts of many staff, volunteers, and board members. We are so very grateful for your devotion and support of MOG. Lastly, our most heartfelt thank you to our guests for bringing your passion for glass to the event. Your participation is what enables the Museum to pursue our vision as a signature glassmaking venue shaping the future of glass. Thank you!
