The Museum’s Heritage Lottery Funded project, ‘Oxford’s Hidden Histories’ is well underway. We are excited to be working with some fantastic people and looking forward to getting your views and thoughts on the future of the Museum during our events and exhibitions.
Open Monday to Saturday | 10am – 5pm Visit the Museum of Oxford’s interactive galleries and explore Oxford’s fascinating story in two very different spaces. Explore Oxford is the only place to learn about the city and its people!
Celebrations of anniversaries are demonstrated in free exhibitions such as 125 Years of Nurse Education in Oxford and 30 Years of the Oxford-Leon Link. An outcome of the Urbansuburban project, looking at St Ebbe’s and the impact of the Westgate’s first development, sees Rachel Barbaresi’s artist’s book work being displayed in Explore Oxford. Local people are at the heart of further exhibitions, with the Art for All group and Gwynne Robins displaying their work. October half term abounds with family fun – Magic, Witches and Potions and Hubble, Bubble, Toil and Trouble will explore witchcraft, but within a Shakespearean setting. Discoveries being made at St Aldate’s in the Jewish Quarter Excavations will be revealed in an exciting day of displays, activities and talks in October. And as usual, most events and activities are free. Why not come along and see what your Museum has to offer?

The first stage of the Museum’s development is underway. We are excited to be working with architects Purcell, whose past projects include the National Maritime Museum, Museum Designers Simon Leach Design, who have worked on the National Museum of Northern Ireland, and, planning all associated activity and ensuring the Museum of the future is resilient, we are working with Cultural Consulting Network.

An exhibition of work created by the members of the Museum of Oxford Art Group. The group is open to everyone and many exhibits are by beginners. The diversity of what people produce in classes and at home is exciting and inspiring. Participants show that art really is for all, why not join in the fun? This artist’s book brings together Rachel Barbaresi’s research of St Ebbe’s in living memory for the ‘urbansuburban’ project for Westgate Oxford. Looking back to when the Westgate was first developed and beyond to St Ebbe’s as a densely populated urban area of Oxford, Barbaresi has met some of the original residents who have shared their memories of a time of dramatic upheaval. Follow this project at urbansuburbanoxford. blogspot.co.uk. Commissioned by Westgate Oxford Alliance in partnership with Oxford City Council, Oxford Archaeology and the Museum of Oxford. Oxford Brookes University and the Radcliffe Guild of Nurses celebrate 125 years of Nurse Education in Oxford through an exhibition. It will offer a unique perspective on an important, but so far largely hidden aspect of local history. The exhibition, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, will utilise a range of material exhibits, artefacts, papers and photographs to create a timeline between 1891 and 2016, and provide a representation of the changes to nursing and nurse education that have occurred over the last 13 decades.
The exhibition closes at midday on 28 October. Please note, the exhibition will be closed at 3pm on the 18 October.

@ Gallery Thereby Hangs a Tale is an anarchic exploration of Shakespeare and his influence on contemporary culture. Combining diverse pieces from 20 UK and international artists with works from Oxford school children, the show explores the Bard’s plots and players through sculpture, paintings, automata, drawings and multisensory installations. Shakespeare, but not as you know him.

What have we achieved? @ Gallery Corridor This exhibition is the final event in Oxford-Leon Link’s 30th anniversary year. The aim is to celebrate their achievements and those of Oxford’s twin city of Leon, Nicaragua. The exhibition records the relationship between Oxford and Leon and the great changes since 1986. The original twinning was with a postrevolutionary and often violent city. Now there is peace and relative prosperity, however problems of poverty, lack of education and poor health do remain.
