National Portrait Gallery Paris to Monaro: Pleasures from the studio of Hilda Rix Nicholas Designed by Brett Wiencke Stunning. Beautiful high quality photography used well to enhance the legibility of the subject. Every element has been perfectly and sensitively considered. Nice choice of paper, format and variety of techniques. The playfulness of typography compliments the artist and intention of the story. 9

Great use of colour coding. Well-chosen stock, works will with the artworks. Faux interpretation of traditional binding techniques is effective.

WINNER Hazelhurst Regional Gallery and Arts Centre Alex Seton: Roughing Out Designer: Analiese Cairis Elegant white space with nice column widths and returns. Delicate colouring is sensitive to the work. Interesting font and oddness of layout work well.

WINNER National Gallery of Victoria Robin Rhode: The Call of Walls Designer: Dirk Hiscock (NGV) The interpretation of the art is great design and has interesting balance and scale. Revelation of production of the work is magical. Riske nature of the design is reflective of street art.

BOOK LEVEL A HIGHLY COMMENDED Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa Peter McLeavey: The life and times of a New Zealand art dealer Designer: Alan Deare (Area Design) Biography brought to life by the design and use of illustrations throughout.

WINNER Botanic Gardens of Adelaide Imitation of Life: a visual catalogue Designer: Kate Burns (Kate Burns Design) A unique publication, made with love. The designer carefully and cleverly considered content (classification) and presented it in a non-academic and beautiful way.

BOOK LEVEL B HIGHLY COMMENDED Australian Museum Feathers of the Gods Designer: Amanda Lo Teer (Australian Museum) Very contemporary with interesting combination of stocks and foiling. Nice details on trench fold. Beautiful colour palette reflective of content.

WINNER The Kerry Stokes Collection Pierre Bernard Milius: Last Commander of the Baudin Expedition - The Journal 1800-1804 Designer: Andrew Rankine (Atypica Creative Communication) A delightful object. Exceptional attention to detail. Beautiful materials (foiling and ribbons) with high quality production values.

The New Zealand Art Activity Book Designer: Spencer Levine Fun design allowing children to learn about the collection. Nice tactility of paper and interactivity.

My Art Designer: Jo Hein (Art Gallery of NSW) Outstanding direction in kids’ book design in contrast to many other publications. Solid, robust production techniques, fit for use by children. Educational and nonpatronising design with great use of colour. Reflective of the collection with creative elements for children.

The website has a nice storytelling approach with intuitive navigation compelling the user to explore the content. The great use of colour reflects the period and objects displayed. 41
