ome to a respected and energetic cultural arts scene, celebrated restaurants featuring flavors from 35 countries, world-renowned theater groups and the brains behind U.S. space exploration, Houston is a diverse metropolis brimming with personality. With a revitalized downtown and expanded meeting facilities, Houston offers a cosmopolitan setting. As an added bonus for our nonprofit retail industry, the convenient METRORail connects downtown with the Museum District and Reliant Park, making it easy to travel within the city. With nearly 21,000 concerts, plays, exhibitions and other arts programs presented in Houston annually, residents and visitors have access to a wide variety of cultural programs. On any given night, it’s a safe bet that there’s a show somewhere in Houston’s Theater District. More than two million people visit the downtown area each year to attend one of the city’s worldclass performances. The 17-block area is home to Houston’s year-round resident companies, including the symphony, opera, drama and ballet. Houston is home to 90 consulates—the third-largest consular corps in the nation. Houston radiates with diversity, giving the city one of the most vivid cultural scenes in the country. Project Row Houses, The Ensemble Theatre and The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum are all devoted to showcasing African-American history and culture in the community. Talento Bilingue de Houston is one of the largest Latino cultural centers in the United States, and the Chinatown area showcases Houston’s growing Asian community.

And were you wondering about good eats? Houston’s restaurant scene is as ethnically diverse as its four million residents. ForbesTraveler.com ranked Houston as one of the best restaurant cities in America. The city is jam-packed with more than 8,000 tempting eateries that feature culinary flavors from more than 35 countries. Fast track your way through Houston’s top five mustsee attractions, like Space Center Houston, the Downtown Aquarium and the Museum of Fine Arts, with an oh-so-helpful CityPASS. Offering discounted admission to a diverse mix of attractions, plus helpful hints and reviews, CityPASS is your passport to fun. Houston Center for Contemporary Craft

Welcome to the 59th MSA Retail Conference & Expo!

Yee-Haw! Kick Up Your Heels in Houston..............8

ello Houston and hello to a new day at MSA. As all of us work on extending the experience for visitors to the many and diverse institutions we represent, MSA is at work creating a unique experience for its members, affiliates and other stakeholders with which it is connected. If it’s your first MSA Conference, you’re in for a real treat. If you’ve been before, you’ll notice some changes: • First time ever for you to earn credits toward a Knowledge Standards Certificate in Financial Management and Merchandise Planning. • First time ever for us to host a silent auction with a portion of the proceeds going back to our host chapter—MSA Southwest Central. • First time ever that a party opens the Expo—with food, lots of food. (And a lot of food throughout the three days we’re together!) And have you noticed that new MSA logo—it’s all about the new MSA! The Education Advisory Group (EAG) pushed hard this year to up the ante on the session content. And along the way the EAG members incorporated all sorts of adult learning concepts in everything from the room arrangements to working with the speakers to facilitate peer-to-peer conversations—as well as providing times when we can share with each other what we hope to learn and debrief on what we have already learned. Thank you! I encourage our vendors to take advantage of those sessions that were designed with their needs in mind. And don’t forget, you’re welcome at all of the networking events. This is your time to establish long-lasting relationships with the museums you support with your business. There is a lot more to see and do with the new MSA here in Houston. I’d really appreciate it if you checked out the changes going on throughout the whole association. Change is part of the MSA vibe right now. We’re trying new things to make the organization a better fit and a better value for the members and vendor affiliates it serves. The board members are happy to talk with you about those changes; the staff members (love those purple shirts!) may stop you in the hallways. They’re so excited to tell you about all the things they have in the works. Have fun! Spread the word! It’s a new day at MSA!

THE MSA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

T

he MSA Memorial Scholarship Fund has enabled dozens of nonprofit retail professionals to attend the MSA Retail Conference & Expo to learn more about their trade and strengthen their skills, thereby enhancing the industry. Originally, the scholarship was established and named in honor of Samuel Julius Greenberg, who served as director of museum shops for the Smithsonian Institution from 1982–1989. Sam believed that the MSA Retail Conference & Expo was the greatest learning opportunity for museum store managers. In memory of this exceptional man, MSA established the scholarship fund to help eligible museum store personnel attend its Conference & Expo. In order to recognize the contributions of those MSA members we have lost over the years, the scholarship was renamed the MSA Memorial

Scholarship in 2013. Contributions made now allow the donor to make an “in memory of” donation. Scholarships are awarded annually to MSA members who demonstrate financial need and have not previously attended a Conference & Expo.

MAKE 2015 SCHOLARSHIPS POSSIBLE Help ensure that the next generation of nonprofit retail professionals gets a chance to participate in the networking, education and expo experience. As institutions’ budgets tighten, this scholarship fund is a lifeline to our community. Don’t let that diminish; we need your contributions. Donations may be made at the MSA registration desk.

MSA ANTITRUST POLICY

M

SA is a nonprofit association organized to advance the success of nonprofit retail and of the professionals engaged in it. MSA is committed to helping member institutions be competitive in their respective markets, fiscally responsible and, in general, assets to their institutions. Through the MSA Retail Conference & Expo, chapter meetings, seminars and various publications, the association brings together museum representatives and vendors. The MSA Board of Directors recognizes that the association’s activities could be seen by some as an opportunity for anticompetitive conduct. Thus, the board takes this opportunity to express its undeviating policy to comply strictly with the letter and spirit of all federal, state, applicable trade regulations and antitrust laws. Any actions of MSA or its staff, officers, directors or members that violate these regulations and laws is detrimental to the association’s interests and is unequivocally contrary to MSA policy.

The following rules apply to all MSA activities and must be observed at all MSAsponsored activities and functions under all circumstances—without exception—unless specifically noted here. To assist MSA staff members, officers and committees in recognizing situations that may raise the appearance of an antitrust problem, the board of directors has adopted this Antitrust Policy. Should questions arise as to the manner in which the antitrust laws apply to activities of MSA or any of its committees, such questions shall be directed to MSA headquarters.

GUIDELINES • MSA shall not be used for the purpose of bringing about, or attempting to bring about, any understanding or agreement—written or oral, formal or informal, express or implied—regarding prices, terms or conditions of sale, distribution, volume or customers. • No MSA activity or communication shall include discussion—for any purpose or in

any fashion—of pricing methods or other limitations in timing, costs or volume of production or sale, or allocation of customers. • No MSA activity or communication shall include any discussion that might be construed as an attempt to prevent any person or business entity from gaining access to any market or customer for goods or services, or to prevent any business entity from obtaining a supply of goods or otherwise purchasing goods or services freely in the market. • MSA-sponsored activities shall not include any activity or communication, which is, or might be construed as, an agreement to refrain from purchasing any products, services or supplies from any supplier. These rules apply to informal discussions at MSA-sponsored activities and functions as well as formal presentations and meetings. Antitrust compliance is the responsibility of every MSA member, affiliate, sponsor and staff member.

T

his year’s program was developed with input from a volunteer planning group. The sessions are based on MSA’s eight Knowledge Standards. The Knowledge Standards highlight the core knowledge, skills and abilities needed to perform the responsibilities of a nonprofit retail professional. The application of the Knowledge Standards program at our institutions will help museum stores become a more integral part of the institution’s mission and success. Be sure to thank the 2014 Education Advisory Group (EAG) members for their tireless efforts when you see them in Houston.

Use the Knowledge Standards icons to customize your schedule so that you can focus on the sessions most applicable to the issues you face in your institution today.

OPENING KEYNOTE SESSION: Integrating the Museum Experience

......................... Convention Center—Grand Ballroom A

SPEAKER: Elizabeth Merritt, American Alliance of Museums/Center for the Future of Museums Museums have traditionally segregated the mission-based from the retail experience, even as a few bold innovators experimented with seamless integration of the two. Now, more organizations are beginning to adopt this approach. How can we accelerate a culture in the field, embracing the museum store as an integral facet of the overall visit—on or off line? How can technology and aspects of physical design advance this integrated vision? Elizabeth Merritt will use the forecasting of AAM’s Center for the Future of Museums as a springboard to explore how innovations in communication, data sharing and cultural consumption are shaping this trend.

Hilton—Grand Ballroom G-I Get yourself ready for two days of innovative learning and connecting with your peers at this interactive session. This year, MSA is trying a new formula to spark conversation and thinking. Join one of four groups to continue the conversation kicked off by keynote speaker, Elizabeth Merritt. Using the four key themes discussed by Elizabeth on Saturday morning, groups will construct ideas and share thoughts while getting energized for two days of fast-paced learning and fun!

9–10:15 a.m. STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT

3-D Printing: How Will it Impact my Store?

..............................................................Hilton—Grand Ballroom B

MODERATOR: Elizabeth Merritt, American Alliance of Museums/Center for the Future of Museums PANELISTS: Jennifer Beradino, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and Janet Brunckhorst, Asian Art Museum The rise of home-scale digital fabrication is encouraging new forms of creative engagement with objects. In a world where any object can be turned into data, and that data turned back into an object, we can “replicate” anything we scan. What does that mean for museum stores? There is a clear market niche for museums to fill by harnessing the potential for 3-D technology to create replicas or personalized modifications of museum objects. Watch a live demonstration of the equipment in action as you hear from the experts in the 3-D printing industry. Elizabeth Merritt will moderate the session, leading the group through a dynamic discussion on the many ways this technology could be used in the museum store. MERCHANDISE PLANNING

Pricing Strategies for Maximizing Profits

..............................................................Hilton—Grand Ballroom C

SPEAKER: Tom Shay, Profits Plus Solutions, Inc. Retailing has many rule-of-thumb guidelines. Many of these rules are used to determine the prices of merchandise sold in stores. Too often, these same rules call for taking the cost of an item and multiplying it by a certain factor. Using examples that attendees see and purchase in their everyday shopping experiences, this session will show you how to increase your margins while establishing and maintaining an image of being priced properly within your marketplace. Understanding how you make the determination when you buy will help you make the determinations when you price. Increased margins are sure to follow for those implementing these pricing strategies.

COMMUNICATIONS

One Big Museum: Making Yourself a Seat at the Table ............................................ Hilton—Grand Ballroom D PANELISTS: Chris Michel, The National World War II Museum, and Sally Struever, Portland Museum of Art

In the traditional museum environment, the retail team can often feel left out of key conversations and decisions. But more and more, the museum world is trending towards a more inclusive, collaborative “one big museum” approach. Using case studies from several museums, large and small, the panelists in this session will make the case why museum stores deserve a seat at the table, and how our perspective and experience enriches the institution at every level. You’ll walk away with concrete strategies and the confidence to go back to your museum’s leadership, pull up a chair and get to work.

9-11:45 a.m. STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT

Workshop: Creating a Comprehensive Business Plan .............................Hilton—Grand Ballroom A/B SPEAKER: Andrew Andoniadis, Andoniadis Retail Services

Increasingly, museums expect their stores to be run like a business. An integral part of any retail planning is writing a business plan. This workshop will include two segments. Segment one will focus on descriptions of what should be included in a practical museum store business plan. In the second segment, participants will divide into similarly sized institutions to discuss, with assistance from Andrew, the inclusion of key content in more detail. At the end of the session, you will walk away with a customized business plan framework, specific to your store.

10:15–10:45 a.m. Morning Break ........................ Hilton—Grand Ballroom Foyer Grab another cup of coffee or get hydrated before you head into the next round of educational sessions!

10:45–11:45 a.m. STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT

A “Bookish” Conversation .....Hilton—Grand Ballroom C

MODERATOR: Jama Rice, Museum Store Association PANELISTS: Bernard Bonnet, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and Stuart Gerstein, Philadelphia Museum of Art Publishing and book sales are important to many museum stores and other nonprofit retailers. While they provide an extension of the institution’s mission through scholarly content and aesthetic design, they also can serve as an immense source of revenue. Museum stores are facing a growing problem as online retailers encroach upon the business and the margins of book buyers and sellers. What does this mean as museum retailers assess the benefits versus the costs of publishing? Are there plausible solutions for the issue or is this the new reality? Is there action that MSA members can jointly undertake? Join MSA’s Executive Director/CEO Jama Rice as she moderates this candid conversation between two industry experts.

Copyright Considerations....... Hilton—Grand Ballroom A SPEAKER: Carlotta Ramirez, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

Postcards, paintings and publications…oh my! We’ve all seen the “©” symbol, but what does it have to do with museum stores and product development? This presentation will delve into the copyright basics every museum retailer needs to know. Eye-catching case examples and fun analogies will leave you with the necessary tools to understand and successfully navigate your copyright concerns, including what to watch out for, current issues and licensing options you may have. BUSINESS RELATIONS

Product Development: Watch it Live!

............................................................. Hilton—Grand Ballroom D

PANELISTS: Barry Bell, Found Image Press; David Graveen, Popcorn Movie Poster Company; and Ari Lowenstein, Unemployed Philosophers Guild Three seasoned product development professionals with more than 60 years combined product development experience will give you their perspective on developing custom products for your institution or clients. Using three real-life projects for upcoming exhibits that were submitted by your peers, actual products/ prototypes will be developed, shown and discussed. The panel will discuss preparation of images, content, fully developed text and logos, as well as target price points, product mix, typical turn-around times, etc. Vendors new to the field also can learn about the project management aspects of product development, including ways to build long-lasting relationships through the creative process.

12–1:30 p.m. Membership & Awards Meeting With Lunch

........................................................... Hilton—Grand Ballroom G-I

The MSA Membership Meeting might just be called a working lunch, as you will be asked to help the MSA Board of Directors and staff tackle the issues facing the association. Join the MSA Board as they discuss the successes and pitfalls this past year as the organization began a renewed focus on its strategic plan. Hear the association’s Executive Director/CEO talk about the road traveled over the last months as the staff worked with volunteer task forces and committees in implementing the plan and a description of the road that still lies ahead. Participate in a conversation about the future of MSA and how you can actively take part in shaping it. In addition, the MSA Awards will be presented to honor nonprofit retail professionals and vendors. A buffet lunch will be served.

1:45–2:45 p.m. Sharing Solutions From the Field ............................................................. Hilton—Grand Ballroom D MODERATOR: Andrea Miller, Museum Store Association Throughout the years, the category-based discussion group sessions held at the MSA Conference have generated dozens of topics for conversation. Using the most popular topics that focused on extending the experience as a framework, this is your chance to share your innovative solutions and learn from your peers at this fast-paced, interactive session. Topics include: e-commerce, social media, staffing, special events, membership and “other duties as assigned.”

STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT

Adapting Technologies to the Museum Store Environment .....................................Hilton—Grand Ballroom B SPEAKER: Keith Ostfeld, Children’s Museum of Houston

Many museums see technology as something that has to be custom-made: specialized games, hand-held devices with guided tours, touch screens with custom-built content, etc. But, is there an easier way to use existing, offthe-shelf technologies to create meaningful experiences? In this session, we will discuss a redefinition of “technology” in relation to the museum and its implications for the store and take a brief tour of many technology projects around the country from RFID to QR codes. We’ll also explore how the Children’s Museum of Houston is using this technology in partnership with the Fiddle Sticks Toys Museum Store. FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

Aligning the Museum Store and CFO Office

............................................................. Hilton—Grand Ballroom A

SPEAKER: Tracy Cude, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art As we all know, museum stores occupy a unique space within the organization by representing both the mission and business of the institution. Yet few individuals naturally possess both the creative/visual talents as well as the analytical skills required to operate at the highest level in both arenas. Pairing the retail knowledge (visual display, product development, product selection, etc.) with the financial analysis that CFOs need and want, Tracy will explore common language, terms and strategies for aligning the store’s goals with the CFO office using a basic business plan approach. Eligible for certificate credit. OPERATIONS

New Developments in Point-of-Sale Systems ...............................................Hilton—Grand Ballroom C PANELIST: Brian Charles, TAM Retail Systems (additional panelists TBD)

Join the discussion in this roundtable on the ins and outs of retail management systems. Find out how your colleagues are using POS systems to meet visitor needs. This session will explore topics such as trends in PCI compliance, secure mobile and tablets sales, smart phone and tablet inventory procedures, using the POS for advanced fundraising, and creating real-time dashboards.

2:45–3:15 p.m. Afternoon Break ..................... Hilton—Grand Ballroom Foyer Satisfy your sweet tooth and get re-energized with a cookie break!

3:15–4:30 p.m. COMMUNICATIONS

Are You Getting in Your Own Way? How Attitude and Approach to Customers and Staff Make All the Difference to Your Bottom Line ............................................................. Hilton—Grand Ballroom D

SPEAKER: Lindsay Anvik, See Endless, Inc. This revitalizing retail session will leave you feeling like you can go out and conquer the world and sell your entire inventory. Learn effective techniques to approach challenging situations, customers and staff. Discover the best ways to break out of “retail ruts” and get re-energized about your business.

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

So, You Think You Know UBIT?

..............................................................Hilton—Grand Ballroom C

SPEAKER: Angelyn Zephyr, CPA, Accurate Accounting CPAs, LLC Nonprofit retail serves as a valuable revenue source for museums and other nonprofit organizations. It extends the mission and provides a service to visitors. For years, nonprofit retailers have struggled with the concept of Unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT). How does the tax exempt status of an organization affect the products stores can carry? What exactly is UBIT and how important is it that you follow its basic guidelines? Using real world examples, Angelyn will help you determine the taxable or tax-exempt nature of the product lines in your store, as well as present a brief look at the deductible expenses that reduce taxable income. After this session, you will return to your institution more confident and prepared when it comes to buying decisions, while considering the impact of the tax on your bottom-line profits. MERCHANDISE PLANNING

Increase Profit With Inventory Control

..............................................................Hilton—Grand Ballroom B

SPEAKER: Tom Shay, Profits Plus Solutions, Inc. While many museum stores use a computerized point-of-sale system, managers often do not understand the functionality of the inventory control system. This session will illustrate how to properly establish re-order points based upon the seasonality of sales as well as the lead-time necessary for product replenishment. Inventory control is more crucial than ever before. You can’t have dead inventory sitting on the shelf nor can you be out of necessary items. This session shows how to get that balance. CUSTOMER RELATIONS

More Than a $1: Benefits of Engaging With Kids in Museum Stores ....................... Hilton—Grand Ballroom A

PANELISTS: Blue Anderson, Columbia River Maritime Museum, and Raymond McKenzie, Asian Art Museum of San Francisco Institutions that are primarily focused on kids’ programming (zoos, science centers, etc.) have learned about the advantages of fully engaging young visitors in the store, but many non-child focused institutions do not always create a welcoming experience for the youngest in their stores. Some of the reasons given for this lack of welcome are the perceptions that there is little value when kids take a trip to the store, that there are too many challenges to managing young visitors or that kids won’t contribute to a better experience for our older visitors. Explore the benefits and challenges of hosting children in your store through practical solutions, all while creating an engaging experience for kids.

4:30–5 p.m. Connecting the Dots: Your Daily Session Summary ............................................ Hilton—Grand Ballroom G MODERATOR: Elizabeth Merritt, American Alliance of Museums/Center for the Future of Museums

Join Elizabeth Merritt to discuss the innovative and fresh ideas presented throughout the day in an interactive format. What was your favorite session and why? What tips and tricks are you taking back to your store for immediate implementation? What did your neighbor in a particular session pick up that perhaps you hadn’t? What “a-ha” moment do you want to share with the group that was inspired from the keynote address? What are you excited to learn on Monday to complete your MSA Conference experience? Using a quick hands-on activity that you could apply in your institution, Elizabeth will tie it all together and get the group ready for the final day of learning and sharing.

6–8:30 p.m. Networking Reception ..................... Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and Contemporary Arts Museum Houston

Join us in Houston’s Museum District for MSA’s networking reception hosted by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH) and the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH). Enjoy delicious food and drink while mingling with colleagues at these culturally rich museums. At the MFAH you won’t want to miss the “John Singer Sargent Watercolors” exhibition. Presenting more than 90 of Sargent’s works, this exhibition combines the two most significant collections of watercolor paintings by Sargent (1856–1925). At MFAH, you’ll also want to explore the museum’s impressive collections of American painting, sculpture, decorative arts and antiquities. Make sure to stop by the MFAH shop to complete your visit and see their distinctive and vast collection of gifts and books covering many interests and styles. On the way to CAMH for dessert, take a stroll through the Cullen Sculpture Garden nestled in-between these two institutions. On view at CAMH is a video installation by English-born, Mexican based artist, Melanie Smith, who represented her adopted country at the 2011 Venice Biennale. And, of course, you’ll want to check out CAMH’s Museum Shop, named one of the “Top 100 Houston Shops” by Houston Chronicle—which identified it as one of the city’s “best-kept secrets.” Show your MSA badge and get a 20 percent discount at both shops!

MSA Leadership Series: Enhancing Your Emotional Quotient ......................Hilton—Grand Ballroom B SPEAKER: Ed Hennessy, Leadership Call, LLC

(By invitation only to current and incoming board, committee and chapter leadership.) The success of MSA’s leadership depends on trust, engagement, collaboration, teamwork and interpersonal relationships. Discover and learn how to inspire, influence and positively impact others within our organization with the “interpersonal” emotional intelligence component. Emotional Intelligence is a set of emotional and social skills that influence the way we perceive and express ourselves, develop and maintain social relationships, cope with challenges and use information in an effective and meaningful way. Participate in individual and group exercises aimed at enhancing your leadership skills. You will be able to take what you’ve learned and apply it to your MSA volunteer experience, as well as all leadership positions you hold. COMMUNICATIONS

I’m a Fan of Following: Facebook & Pinterest Optimization .................................... Hilton—Grand Ballroom A SPEAKER: Lindsay Anvik, See Endless, Inc.

Facebook and Pinterest are the best and most lucrative social media avenues for retailers. Discover methods to help you optimize your page, get more engagement and increase your fans and followers. If you completed Lindsay’s survey, your store’s social media page may be used as an example in the session! This will be your chance to get personalized feedback on your social media outlets. Best practices for Facebook advertising, which can be confusing and frustrating, also will be discussed. MERCHANDISE PLANNING

Leaving the Nest (Temporarily)

..............................................................Hilton—Grand Ballroom C

PANELISTS: Mary Douthit, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art; Stuart Gerstein, Philadelphia Museum of Art; and Michael Guajardo, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Leaving the comforts of your home base to host a satellite or popup store can be overwhelming, intimidating and risky. Three industry experts versed in satellite stores, pop-ups and exhibit shops will discuss the essential elements of logistics, merchandising and marketing. The panel will also share their secrets to effective collaboration with the satellite location and/or exhibit development team. Eligible for certificate credit.

Moving Your Volunteer Program From Good to Great! ....................................................Hilton—Grand Ballroom B SPEAKER: Muffin Clark, Rice University

This workshop will provide the tools and knowledge needed to develop or enhance your volunteer program. BUSINESS RELATIONS

Sourcing Locally: Pluses, Minuses—and Methods! ............................................Hilton—Grand Ballroom C

PANELISTS: David Duddy, deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum; Julie Steiner, The Barnes Foundation; and Stuart Hata, de Young & Legion of Honor, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco Do you shy away from using artists, artisans and sources that may be right next door? There may be some extra work and the creation of customized systems to make it a success—but the payoff can be fantastic, both in building sales and building community for your institution. This panel will offer innovative approaches, best practices and helpful tips for success (as well as some potential pitfalls). STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT

Retailers as Storytellers: Connecting With Curators, Customers and Communities

............................................................. Hilton—Grand Ballroom A

SPEAKER: Carla Johnson, Type A Communications Retailers are central to the core mission and experience of an institution, yet boards, administrators and other internal stakeholders often fail to give them credit for their role. Often the riff stems from store managers thinking like entrepreneurs, and boards and administrators thinking like conservators. So how do you find common ground that advances the vision of your institution? Storytelling. Storytelling can serve as the thread that builds credibility internally with your board members, administrators and other influencers. By using storytelling as a “North Star” for communications, you can shift perceptions about your role and as a strategic partner and revenue source.

12:15–1:45 p.m. CLOSING KEYNOTE LUNCHEON: How DO They Do that? Secret Tech Weapons for Museum Store Staff ........................................................... Hilton—Grand Ballroom DE

SPEAKER: Beth Ziesenis, Author, Speaker and Nerdy Best Friend What if you could whip up a graphic to brand your newest product lines in a matter of minutes? Or schedule a meeting without having to send three dozen emails to find a time everyone could meet? Or create a dazzling multimedia video for a museum store event? And what if you could pull all this off without spending a dime? Join “Your Nerdy Best Friend” (a.k.a. author Beth Ziesenis) to discover how to use free and bargain technology tools you never knew existed to wow your customers and colleagues. This high-energy session will give you 30+ tools that will leave people asking.”How DO they do that?”

What products and services do you offer the nonprofit retail industry? All Found Image Press products are handcrafted in the USA! We have an eclectic archive of more than 50,000 vintage images covering every topic, place and occasion from everyday to holiday, from Los Angeles to New York to Paris, from decorative arts to sailing ships to wildlife. Choose from more than 100 calendar titles and 35 postcard booklet titles or select from our extensive archive to create your own line of high quality note cards, postcards, boxed notes, matted prints, magnets, lined journals, sketch books, easel desk calendars and postcard booklets. Our very popular custom product development program offers low minimums, short runs and short turn-around times. You can select images from our archive or supply images from your institution or collections. Our products are printed on-demand in San Diego, Calif., on high-quality acid-free paper and—except for our postcards, magnets and boxed notes—are individually packaged in clear glassine bags.

What products and services do you offer the nonprofit retail industry? Comments from many happy customers: • “Just gorgeous! Oh, how fun!” • “This is elegant! I feel so sophisticated in this necklace!” • “It is more than a necklace; it is a work of art!” • “Every time I wear one of your necklaces, people ask where I got it.” Dale Levy, The Lady From Venice, is well known for her one-of-a-kind jewelry designs, but this year she became involved with the design of the beads and created two lovely collections that are reproducible—the Elegant Swirls Series (see page 46) and the Allegra Fun Series (shown above). These are luxury items, MSRP $200. She also offers the Juliet Collection, unique and quite modern in design, as well as a lower price point collection called the Aventurine Series, with jewelry that appeals to all ages, from the youngest girls to their grandmothers. The Lady of Venice has selected the best of Murano, Italy, to bring to the MSA Expo in Houston. Besides her jewelry collections, she offers economic small gift items, glass sculptures on elegant stands, and new mediumsized sculptures in glass. Themes include fish, birds, hot-air balloons and clowns, all new and delightful.

What products and services do you offer the nonprofit retail industry? Made with Your Mission in Mind™ : We take our tagline seriously. Old World Artisans Int. uses your digital images from your museum exhibits, historical monuments or city landmarks to design and create custom-sewn fabric and leather products based on your mission statement. Our research shows that the cultural commerce visitor is searching for products which are: • Made in America • Lightweight • Packable • Immediately Useful • Giftable • Collectible • Custom Products with Provenance Cards • Attractively Packaged • Based on Your Mission Statement We create travel bags and accessory products to meet their needs. We offer a 100% guarantee and no minimums. We also offer original, signed, numbered, limited edition artwork on leather cushions, as well as giclee canvases, and many other products. We also have lots of new products planned to debut in Hartford next year!

What information about your company do you want to share with attendees? Found Image Press has been supplying superior paper and gift products to the Museum Gift Shop industry for 16 years and has been a proud member of MSA for 14 years. We have created custom products for many of the most important cultural institutions in the USA. We pride ourselves on our high level of customer service and on our flexibility in helping you get the product you need in your store to drive sales and further the mission of your institution. Our archive and product offerings can be viewed at our web site, www.foundimage.com.

What information about your company do you want to share with attendees? At Old World Artisans Int., we want to preserve the skills and craftsmanship that once made our country a world leader in manufacturing. With needles, brushes and cameras, we combine our efforts to share these skills, put people back to work and help to bring our factories back to the United States.

What products and services do you offer to the nonprofit retail industry? Q3 Art, owned by artists Marvin and Michelle Shafer, offers contemporary and affordable handdyed, anodized aluminum jewelry, mobiles and clocks handmade with great care in the USA. We make all our aluminum components out of 80% recycled reprocessed aluminum. Our pieces are all tumble-polished and individually anodized and hand-dyed. Hand dying parts allows us the extensive color palette we use. From earth tones to jewel tones, we have you colored! Our jewelry designs include earrings, pendants bracelets, broaches and Judaica. We make and design both contemporary, hand-forged and textured mobiles and desktop mobiles, as well as thematic whimsical mobiles and clocks. Our themes include celestial, music and fish. We have experience with color and designing custom mobiles and jewelry to relate to a show or an event in your museum.

What products and services do you offer the nonprofit retail industry? ScreenCraft offers a complete line of beautiful, natural marble gifts that are fully customizable with any art. This customization allows us to create a one-of-a-kind gift for every shop! Commemorate an exhibit, celebrate your location, inspire guests with quotes and beautiful art. What products and services do you offer the nonprofit retail industry? Uprintondemand.com is definitely thinking out of the traditional “gift shop box.” We give the nonprofit retail industry the necessary software and tools and the complete manufacturing backup service to enter the multi-billion dollar print-on-demand industry. Some museums have more than 100,000 curated, local photographs. Our cutting-edge software allows you to monetize such photographs at the simple click of a mouse. Your culture-loving visitors are able to select any single image and choose how to take that piece of history home in any one of more than 2,752 price and size combinations. Their purchases can be in colour, black and white or sepia. The work can be reproduced on a selection of nine different materials from poster to canvas to stunning metal. More and more consumers are using technology for their purchases and you can take part in those sales. We have created a model that works by bolting onto your existing gift shop offering.

What information about your company do you want to share with attendees? We have a wonderful high-quality art product that is sold in many of the finest museum shops and galleries across the country. With a great price point, our top-selling fashion-forward earrings are unique, light weight and collected by many loyal fans. Hand made in our Chicago studio.
