2013 is go!
This year is already one to remember. The usual corrupt politics and World War III raging, still, but also a meteor hit the planet (as predicted in an episode of Doctor Who), the Pope resigned, the Harlem Shake shook things up and sadly there is Bull n Gate gate, on the sad state of venues side. First round of Awards Seasons out of the way. The Oscars saga started early, on valentines day, in South Africa and at the ceremony in L.A., Adele sang “Diamonds Are For Skyfall”, or whatever live and it got an award for best almost-cover-version movie tune or something. The UK’s own celebrity’s in nice clothes and something to with music awards were on too. Hats off to the winners. The more success the better, right? The Brits bored even kids but at least Barack Obama got an NME award. Positvely, news was out that the global music trade value rose for the first time since 1999. And, at down to earth music life level, the small to medium venues had some sparkling moments of their own. Some of them featuring artists featured in the above previous issue (click it to view)

Spotted
the singer of outrageous rock n roll gods
in waiting, (pictured above, gearing up for the debut album release in a business like manne)., down the front for Sham 69. There were loads of up n coming musicians in the house withthe punk legends, (and amazing live reviews for the gig from the press across the board). . Anyway, you do NOT want to miss a Pink Cigar gig., great big songs ‘n’ show - but don’t take your grandma, along, or book them for a children’s party…
@rottenhillgang
Having caught Hollie Cook (above) a couple of years ago at an UpRise Festival event at Proud in Camden, I've been entranced by this up and coming music talent, so imagine the delight of catching her as part of the recent Rotten Hill Gang jam in the wild west of London. Taking the original punky reggae party vibe of the 20th century to its 21st century evolution, this is uniqulture in full effect. Its a session, filming, photography and above all friendly as fug. We chatted to some lovelies in the bogs and between sets. (I was also chuffed to meet Don Letts). Interviews were made after the gig.
This is a movement for fans of the under radar, authentic music buzz circuit. The anti-scene has more adrenaline to offer than Xcrement Factor style marketability towards what now passes as The Brits. this is definitely part of the 4real deal. That evening, Jim and Rupert from the Jim Jones Revue, Annie Bea, Reds Kin, Alan Wass and many more friends made the Rotten Hill Show a live party in a studio bunker experience. See https://www.facebook.com/rottenhillgang for images, vibe and news. Unlike in some gig-post codes of the capital, I didn't feel out of my South East London comfort zone as it wasn't about indie haircuts and hipster snobby snoozefuck, just obsession with music. A great night out with Heather Minx and Bad Wolf (pictured above with Mick Jones), it was awesome and we were in awe! Thanks to all who made us feel welcome. Caffy facebook.com/artfulmtb

@playhardgigs Launched at International Live Music Conference, last march Playhard’s live stream music show, and the artists involved, have made an impression. The global show is the perfect vehicle for Dingwalls, the Camden Lock venue of legends and potential, to share the UK's brilliant musical culture around the world during its 40th anniversary. Dingwalls is a landmark gig. Since 1973 an eclectic galaxy of stars including The Strokes, Coldplay, The Drifters, Gallows, Gilles Peterson, The Stranglers, Ellie Goulding and recently Noel Gallagher, Foo Fighters Tom Odell, Mumford & Sons have graced the stage. Cultural icons like Blondie, The Clash and The Sex Pistols have all played and hung out there, and are as much part of the firmament as it is of Britain’s musical reputation. Expect amazing high-energy shows and, with so many buzz musician, industry and media mover shakers at the early doors mixer, sparkling socials for London’s taste makers. (GotSeen TV)

The Ghosts ' (MixMag). Tipped as ones to watch by a plethora of national media. They've played festivals across the UK and Europe, sharing stages with big names. “Soaring and sublime synth pop” (The Guardian). Currently living and writing in a former music school where Elgar once taught, they were selected for SXSW and will release a new album later this year http://facebook.com/wearetheghosts

This former Ou Est Le Swimming Pool member is as individual as they come. Having neatly transferred the synth pop flame over to his pseudonym persona, he has allowed himself to tinker, adding slightly haunting ingredients to the mix and is set to release an album soon, expect tidal waves of interest. Little Night Terrors- “Pure Pop Dynamite” about to throw a hand grenade into the music scene. They have been holed up in a Kent farmhouse with Arctic Monkeys producer, Simon Barnicott, losing their minds, but finding their future. Within a year of forming they have self-released two singles, gone Top 50 iTunes chart, been played on TV, sold out every show in their Leicester home town and gigged with The Vaccines and The 1975. Utterly unstoppable. http://www.littlenightterrors.com/
Cold Comittee (Live 4 Ever) The newer wave rock and roll quartet from North Wales are being picked up by Radio and in demand at the coolest hot ticket shows. Having recently supported Miles Kane, they've a new single 'Iceman' up their sleeves ready to unleash on their fast swelling fan base which includes one Liam Gallagher‌ https://soundcloud.com/coldcommitteemusic
The Broxton Hundred Sprinklings of Psychedelia, plenty of groove and knack for a pop tune. The trio formed early 2012 and were such a hit at Playhard in Autumn that they have already been invited back. Armed with the seeds of a fan base, they release an EP lin the near future and are tipped to catch in performance. (Louder Than War). https://facebook.com/thebroxtonhund red

K New album, new single, free download and get Access All Areas with the band!
Born out of the ashes of Larrikin Love, The Treatment and Marner Brown, K are set to release their first single 'Too Young To Die', on 1st April. Debut album, 'Rise’ follows in the summer. Both are preceded by a free download, 'Stand Alone' (an homage to Hunter S Thompson), available now. The recordings were funded through fan-driven label PledgeMusic. Over the past few months K have been working hard in the studio crafting the album.
It was recorded in The Charlatan's Big Mushroom studios with producer Jim Spencer (whose credits include Oasis, New Order, Johnny Marr, The Vaccines etc) after the band got a personal recommendation from The Charlatans' own Jon Brookes. Jim Spencer’s reaction to what he’s heard? "The tracks sound massive, with Fiachra Kerrigan's vocals as good as you would ever need to be as a rock vocalist... think Rod, Liam, and Paul Rogers rolled into one." Go to http://vathq.co.uk/artists/k/offer/ not only for your free download but also to be entered into some truly exclusive, dream competitions. Thanks to the band's partnership with Alfa Romeo you can win a day's racing at Goodwood, including a skid pan experience! And a great VIP package for any rock n roll music fan; you and a friend can hang out all day with the band at a gig of your choice, including sound check, rare dressing room hangout pass, watch the gig from the stage and enjoy a night out with them afterwards! Respected for the power of their live shows and addictive songs, they look set for great things in 2013. On this wavelength, and in appreciation of their fans helping to make the album, K kicked off their massive year with a packed launch at the Queen Of Hoxton in London. Starting with a pep talk from their manager… (continued/…)

Where’s Strutter? at Playhard, Camden Dingwalls (January 2013) Photographed by Christine Rush.
Psych pop rockers, Where’s Strutter? have made a real impact at the start of their career. Playing high profile gigs around the country with many other artists (selling out a few of their own headlines) their gigs mix high octane performances and eclectic diversity. The music is a driving force, finding acute satisfaction in extreme dynamics and a wavy euphonious guitar sound. Debut EP ‘Apollo’s Bloom’ is available now and explains a concept representing the bands early visions. The band spent 2012 recording, experimenting and playing at their studio HQ owned by independent, ‘The Manchester Label’. Chapters in the tale towards a debut album…
The Darlingtons are a band starting to get noticed. Debut album, laid the foundation for increased attention and they are not looking back. Hailing from Somerset, they are armed with hooky, life affirming tunes that reflect all aspects of suburban culture good, bad (and surreal). is a lt-guitarpop laced with melancholy and dark under tones. This sound of new independence has a hint of classic alternative, also. A driven, hard working band, reflect hope and conviction . Lyrics read like a running commentary on life’s disapointments. Instead of moaning laments on social
media about their environment, lives and people, they fuel those feelings into songs from the heart. Wrapping them up with emotion and energy in a widescreen setting. The band are by no means activists, but more sentiment fuelled idealists wearing rose tinted glasses, urged on by belief and, passion. They are currently pouring their souls into a second album. Not only do come recommended as a live band by audience feedback, but these potential indie disco faves additionallyt excude an engaging positivity. That will help to make 2013 a step up year for them. This is the time to catch them at close range on a (growing) UK tour. Always positive to hear of artists that really can be arsed. Best of luck to them.

GotseeN
Gotseen.com was created in 2008 to provide a FREE platform for unsigned bands. The whole ethos was that all proceeds from any transactions would go directly to the bands. Then they started their global platform - GotSeeN has streamed over a thousand gigs to help unsigned bands get noticed. As music lovers increasingly annoyed with BIG corporate music businesses 'ripping off' bands, not a penny was charged. The project is growing in profile and potential and now needs some help back for more equipment and staff. Get in touch to get involved and support. I can vouch for them. Even before artists invite their own fans to watch, our Playhard streams have an average audience bigger than three sold out Brixton Academy shows. @theseauk The Sea new EP ‘High On…’ + UK / Europe tour. Alex and Peter are brothers and they are The Sea. They list their interests as music, surfing, sex, love and life. Then live them!
Morrisson, they have kept working hard (via a very scary road accident – this is a real deal musical tale of ups and downs with a great soundtrack). So its good to see things going well.
One of the thing that makes this duo essential is that they are part of a groundswell of Monthly Planet caught up live star turns obsessively with The Sea for an enjoying what they do, interview last summer just wearing that heart on their before they headed out on sleeve and connecting with an arena tour with James an audience that feel the same. Real music shames hipsters and attracts gig goers who want to hear and
FEEL as well as see. Each tour and release swells an ocean of fans with another wave. The combination of blues versus their guttural emphatic harmonies kick your ears into touch in the opening collision of ‘High On...’ the EP released on April 11th. Influences such as MC5, The White Stripes, The Kills and a smattering of Stooges jostle for attention as the boys put pedal to metal with a fresh punk vibe. It’s raw, fast and dirty. Video; 'Get Up, Stand Up, Die' http://youtube.com/watch?v=ICocqjhYY4k The pride that some artists are showing in authenticity, with an ethic to work hard, can make me a born again music fan. The obvious pleasure that bands like The Archie Sylvester Trio get from making analogue recordings is palpable. Bluesy riffs that would have struck a chord with Robert Johnson, increasing on the up n comers circuit, with no main stream media hype to join the dots. In this vein, The Sea are firmly turning their backs on the industry . They don’t give a damn about ‘playing the music biz game’, photo shoots, stylists, marketing gurus and meme scams. There are no click tracks, horns and strings here! Just a guitar, a drum kit and screaming vocals – all turned up LOUD. Gigs are a white hot sweaty and sweaty. Their magnificent reputation has earned shows with The Kills, The Enemy and Muse. The Sea love it. It shows. @badforlazarus1
Bad For Lazarus, Good for music.. Oh. My. Word. In other words, blown away. Bad For Lazarus call it heavy nasty pop with guitars. They shake, rattle, rock n roll it out live like thunder and lightening personified. Rich Fownes (vocals / guitar / bass), Dominick Knight (vocals / bass), Richie Monroe (vocals / guitar), Ross Crick (drums) and Liam Dowling (keys / noises / guitar) came together to raise “Motown Hell on stages across the land. They tour consistently (old skool social networking) and their chaotic wall of musicality at decibels is an impressive monster of a show.
After various adventures and misadventures in the music world, Bad For Lazarus were drawn together to share their love of roadside services, small vans and the assured destruction of every onstage monitor and mic-stand in the country. We like Motown and we like Richard Hell...so we sound like Motown Hell. But their “motown hell” is under for instance pinned with SONG skills. Take http://youtube.com/watch?v=G_q315zTEb0 Sure the line up has some previous pedigree, but having seen them live it feels like this band started from scratch once they clicked and loved what they were doing. Not so much a “Supergroup” as a super group, if their set at London's Bull & Gate was anything to go by. BFL are eager to work hard, get out there and play for people. Tour dates a plenty - UK and Europe – coming together at https://facebook.com/BadforLazarus
