MHS - A Short History December 2023 marked the return of the Musical Heritage Society, an iconic American organization devoted to keeping interest in classical music alive. Formed in 1962, the founders of the Musical Heritage Society decided to create recordings and bypass the record companies entirely, offering their recordings via catalogs. Over time, over 4000 recordings were released, including the first complete cycle of Haydn’s symphonies, recorded by the Vienna Chamber Orchestra. In the early 1970s, after a customer complained about the lack of good liner notes on their recordings, Musical Heritage Society hired him and formed The Musical Heritage Review, a magazine devoted to allowing MHS members to offer opinions and thoughts about music, musicians, composers and

just about anything their writers felt led to a great love of music. In the late 1970s, Musical Heritage Society began making jazz recordings and founded the Jazz Heritage Society. The direct to the customer approach also boomed at that time, and MHS’s customer list grew to over 500,000 members. Many members of a generation of classical and jazz musicians made their debuts for the Musical Heritage Society record label. Joshus Bell, Dawn Upshaw, Andras Schiff and Yefim Bronfman made their recording debuts on the Musical Heritage Society label. The jazz label specialized in reviving the careers of jazz lions like Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck, Stanley Turrentine and Peggy Lee.

MHS’s record labels won 3 Grammy Awards, 1 for classical and 2 for jazz. The newest incarnation of the Musical Heritage Society will be dedicated to restoring the vast amount of recordings and writings that were created for the purpose of entertaining and educating the members of MHS. Over 1500 recordings remain unreleased. Recent reissues include recordings by Oscar Shumsky, Artur Balsam, Sahan Arzruni, The Aulos Ensemble and many great American musicians. Over 30 years of The Musical Heritage Review are also being slowly returned to circulation. These distinctive essays mesh scholarship with personal recollection. They are not meant to simply educate or explain, they are meant to convey first and foremost a love of music - the very passion that powers the Musical Heritage Society.
