2015 Summer Festival Summary

To expand the chamber music community and to enhance the enjoyment and understanding of the art form by championing the highest artistic quality in live performance, promoting in-depth audience engagement with the music and artists, and providing intensive training for aspiring professional musicians and industry leaders.

Music@Menlo’s 2015 season, Schubert, celebrated one of Western music’s most cherished musical voices, Franz Schubert, a composer whose prolific but tragically short career has shaped Western music over the two centuries since his death.

Overview Celebrating its thirteenth season this year, Music@Menlo has become an internationally acclaimed summer festival and institute combining world-class chamber music performances, extensive audience engagement, intensive training for preprofessional musicians, and a variety of activities which have broadened and enhanced the chamber music community of the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.

Music@Menlo was founded on the conviction that, while great music offers aesthetic pleasure and spiritual renewal at the most basic listening level, deeper engagement with the art form opens doors to inspiration and enlightenment. Great music generates connections with cultures across ages and continents and cultivates fluency in new and diverse creative languages. It enhances our understanding of Western history, intensifies the enjoyment of well-known works, and increases the appetite for and capacity to be engaged by unfamiliar music.

An immersive experience centered on distinctive thematic programming, Music@Menlo enriches its core concert offerings with myriad opportunities for in-depth learning to intensify audiences’ enjoyment and understanding of the music. The festival’s particular brand of enrichment complements core content, providing new ways for longtime concertgoers and newcomers of all ages to explore chamber music.

This summer, Music@Menlo presented Schubert’s work in a chronological journey through his compositions, assessing his influence that has lasted well beyond his brief but extraordinary thirty-one-year lifespan. Our audiences heard a body of work that is best experienced in the signature Music@Menlo fashion: with a full immersion in the three-week festival season, an adventure that mirrored the intensity and brevity of Schubert’s life. Through seven Concert Programs, five Schubertiade concerts, and three Encounters, festival participants had the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the life of Schubert.

The depth and content of Music@Menlo’s ancillary offerings provided opportunities for discovery and engagement unique to Music@Menlo. Through public Institute activities including master classes and Café Conversations and extended offerings including AudioNotes, forty professional musicians, five emerging young professional alumni-faculty members, eleven preprofessional musicians, thirty-one Young Performers, twenty-two interns, and thousands of audience members enjoyed exploring music through a lens of their own emotional responses.

2015 Summer Festival Activities MAIN-STAGE EVENTS Thematically Organized Chamber Music Concert Programs — In 2015, Music@Menlo explored the legacy of Schubert through a total of thirteen performances of seven Concert Programs in two venues.

Each Concert Program reflected Schubert’s short but brilliant career.

Schubertiades — Originating during Schubert’s life, these were social gatherings in private residences that included readings, dancing, dining, and the music of Schubert. They were often hosted by the members of the “Schubert circle,” his close friends and admirers, who simply could not get enough of Schubert’s music and were eager to hear his latest magical creations. Schubert biographer and Music@Menlo Encounter Leader Christopher Gibbs has described Schubertiades as “...certainly events, but also, perhaps, a state of mind.” Music@Menlo’s Schubertiades— immersions in the composer’s art—revive the concert tradition that entranced Schubert’s most loyal audiences. This series comprised five performances featuring a cadre of today’s finest recitalists and chamber musicians in Schubert’s most cherished works, including the late string quartets (courtesy of the Escher String Quartet), the final three piano sonatas (featuring Gilles Vonsattel, Wu Han, and Gilbert Kalish). Each program also wove Schubert’s lieder into programs alongside instrumental chamber music, reflecting in detail the composer’s process and astonishing development, and setting the context of the music within his life.

Michael Steinberg Encounter Series — Encounters, Music@Menlo’s signature series of multimedia symposia led by classical music’s most renowned authorities, embody the festival’s context-rich approach to musical discovery and add an integral dimension to the Music@Menlo experience. The 2015 festival season’s three Encounters explored Schubert’s enduring legacy and significance in our time, giving audiences context for the season’s varied program. These ticketed events continue to be some of the most sought-after programs at the festival. This year, Music@Menlo welcomed Christopher H. Gibbs, Susan Youens, and Ara Guzelimian as Encounter Leaders.

CHAMBER MUSIC INSTITUTE Forty-two conservatory-level performers and promising young musicians, ages nine to twenty-nine, participated in the 2015 International Program and Young Performers Program of the Chamber Music Institute. The Institute offers an intensive program where students have unparalleled opportunities to hone their musical skills through daily ensemble coachings. They attend all festival concerts and lectures, appear before and interact with large festival audiences, and receive ongoing professional mentoring.

Coaches and Artist-Faculty — The Institute provides students with direct and sustained contact with leading musicians and musicologists. Most artists on the festival’s elite roster of mainstage performers instruct and collaborate with students in coaching sessions, master classes, and other Institute activities.

This year, five Chamber Music Institute alumni returned as coaches for the Young Performers Program, and International Program alumna Gloria Chien (’06) continued as Chamber Music Institute Director. Renowned pianist Gilbert Kalish returned as International Program Director, and four of the five members of the coaching faculty joined Music@Menlo’s main-stage professional artist roster.

International Program — Eleven students, with an average age of twenty-five, participated in the International Program. They came to the Institute from prestigious educational institutions including the Juilliard School, the Cleveland Institute of Music, New England Conservatory, and Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. All International Program participants attended the Institute at no cost, through generous support provided by contributions to the Ann S. Bowers Young Artist Fund.

Young Performers Program — Thirty-one students, with an average age of fifteen, participated in the Young Performers Program, thirteen of whom were from the San Francisco Bay Area. Through special funding from the Tenth-Anniversary Campaign, fourteen students from outside the Bay Area were provided housing at the nearby Crowne Plaza Palo Alto Hotel. Seventeen Young Performer families were awarded full or partial need-based financial support and/or merit-based scholarships from the Ann S. Bowers Young Artist Fund.

Concerts by Chamber Music Institute Participants — This year, Institute students performed in three Koret Young Performers Concerts and thirteen Prelude Performances, all of which were free and open to the public.

ARTS MANAGEMENT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM Twenty-two college students and recent college graduates participated in the 2015 Arts Management Internship Program.

Interns were trained in all aspects of arts administration including development, event planning and catering, marketing and merchandising, operations, patron services, production, publicity and publications, and student services. The interns, who were integral to the success of the festival, worked side by side with the festival’s staff as highly visible members of the Music@Menlo team. Over the past thirteen years, the festival’s Arts Management Internship Program has served 233 interns from 110 colleges and universities around the world. The internship program is supported in part by the David B. and Edward C. Goodstein Foundation.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Chamber Music Institute Concerts: Koret Young Performers Concerts and Prelude Performances (FREE) — Sixteen afternoon and early evening concerts (three Koret Young Performers Concerts and thirteen Prelude Performances), performed by the Chamber Music Institute participants, provided ideal points of access to chamber music for families, young listeners, and the broader community, with a total combined attendance of 3,771 across three different venues.

Café Conversations (FREE) — Discussions led by festival artists and special guests included “Curating Concerts: Programming from Schubert’s Time to Today” with musicologist Christopher H. Gibbs, “The Art of Katia Setzer” with 2015 Visual Artist Katia Setzer and Cathy Kimball, “Arenas of Learning: From the Streets of New York to the Woods of Vermont” with Juilliard School of Music Dean Ara Guzelimian and David Finckel, and “Gods among Us: Adolf Busch and George Enescu” with violinist Aaron Boyd. Live webcasts of all Café Conversations were provided; these are available on Music@Menlo’s website.

Master Classes (FREE) — The festival’s artist-faculty led eleven master classes in 2015. Live webcasts were offered of all master classes.

Visual Artist — Each season, Music@Menlo invites a distinguished contemporary visual artist to exhibit a selection of works during the festival and showcases the artist’s work in the festival’s publications.

In 2015, artist Katia Setzer’s work was featured in the season’s promotional materials, including the brochure, program book, and season poster, as well as on note cards, the Music@Menlo website, and in an on-site installation in Stent Family Hall.

Volunteer Team — More than 125 volunteers assisted with housing festival artists, students, and administrators, ushering at festival programs, and hosting events, as well as customer relations and other festival operations.

Travel — Music@Menlo’s travel programs offer patrons incomparable insider access to some of the most significant historical and cultural landmarks while they enjoy a musical listening experience like no other. In late April 2015, Music@Menlo traveled from Rome to Lisbon aboard the Corinthian cruise ship and featured performances by Music@Menlo festival favorites Arnaud Sussmann, Matthew Lipman, David Finckel, and Wu Han. Then, in September 2015, Music@Menlo led a group of twenty-five patrons through Europe’s greatest musical capital, Vienna. Inspired by the 2015 festival theme, Music@Menlo explored the rich background of Vienna’s musical history and featured performances by David Finckel, Wu Han, Ani Kavafian, Lily Francis, and Ciro Vigilante.

MULTIMEDIA Virtual Engagement Pilot (Quodlibet) — As part of its ongoing efforts to provide a deeper online experience of the festival, and to optimize its extensive library of audiovisual material, Music@Menlo launched a pilot project on its website during the summer of 2015 entitled Quodlibet. This online resource integrated a trove of written, audio, and video content to offer a unique exploratory experience of the Viennese tradition through the Classical and Romantic periods, drawing on works that have been featured at Music@Menlo over the past thirteen years. In the coming years, Music@Menlo will continue to develop online resources that provide the festival community with many ways to access past seasons—through written pieces, video content (including master classes, artist interviews, and concert performances), contextual information, and the world-class recordings on Music@Menlo LIVE, the festival’s exclusive recording label.

Festival Video Webcasts — Video of Encounters and select festival educational content, including master classes and Café Conversations, was streamed on the Internet and drew 2,375 plays during the festival period. Total minutes of streamed content quadrupled from 2014 to more than 46,400 minutes. All video content will remain online indefinitely.

Video Project — An in-residence videography team produced videos featuring all facets of festival happenings, including excerpts of concerts, portraits of artist-faculty, student experiences in the Chamber Music Institute and interviews with musicians. Videos were posted online, where they drew over 4,700 plays, an increase of 37.5 percent over 2014.

Radio Distribution — Through a partnership with American Public Media, audiences can revisit Music@Menlo performances on more than 245 radio stations internationally, reaching more than 1.4 million listeners each week.

AudioNotes — These preconcert listener guides featured musical examples and interviews with performers from the 2015 festival and were offered on CD and as downloadable MP3 files.

Music@Menlo LIVE CDs — Recordings of the 2015 season, engineered and produced by Grammy Award-winning recording producer Da-Hong Seetoo, are scheduled for release in early 2016.

Music@Menlo’s entire back catalogue of LIVE recordings are also offered online in digital format through Classical Archives, iTunes, and Amazon.

Winter Activities 2014–2015 WINTER SERIES Complementing the world-class chamber music programming that distinguishes Music@Menlo’s internationally acclaimed summer festival, the Winter Series offers three exciting opportunities to further explore the vast richness of the chamber music literature, interpreted by some of classical music’s most commanding performers. The 2014–2015 Winter Series, three Sunday afternoon performances, took place at the Center for Performing Arts at Menlo-Atherton and the Schultz Cultural Arts Hall in Palo Alto.

Last season’s Winter Series was greeted by positive critical acclaim and brought new audiences to Music@Menlo while offering yearround engagement for current audiences. The series opened with Mozart’s Piano Trio in E Major, K. 542, one of the finest essays in the trio literature. The program, performed by a stellar group of artists from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, highlighted the transition from Viennese Classicism into the Romantic era.

Violinist Kristin Lee and pianist Gloria Chien followed the trio with Beethoven’s fiery Kreutzer Sonata. Though composed more than a century later, Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s cinematic Piano Quintet harkens back to the tradition of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, appropriating the most cherished qualities of their music—its formal elegance, melodic beauty, and effortless charm—for listeners of modern times.

and continued with one of the twentieth century’s most towering achievements in the genre—Béla Bartók’s Fourth Quartet. The program concluded with Robert Schumann’s lush and spirited Third Quartet.

The series came to a close with a program that spotlighted the clarinet repertoire and that instrument’s enchanting palette, encompassing tender lyricism and virtuosic panache. A cast of Music@Menlo favorites, led by clarinetists David Shifrin and Romie de Guise-Langlois, with violinist Arnaud Sussmann and pianist Hyeyeon Park, presented an exceptional program of works for clarinet and ensemble. The afternoon’s offerings included Bartók’s Contrasts, Stravinsky’s Suite from L’histoire du soldat, and Paul Schoenfield’s wildly entertaining Clarinet Trio.

WINTER RESIDENCY AT MENLO SCHOOL In 2015, the eleventh annual Winter Residency Program at Menlo School brought a select group of the festival’s Chamber Music Institute alumni back to campus to engage with Menlo School educators and students in a series of unique programs including sixteen classroom presentations, four private performances, and an assembly for the Upper School. These programs reached nearly the entire Menlo School student body of more than eight hundred students, all over a six-day period in March 2015.

The Winter Residency musicians also performed in the annual Chamber Music Institute Benefit Concert, which raises awareness and funds for the Chamber Music Institute.

The second Winter Series concert featured the acclaimed Jerusalem Quartet, which made its eagerly anticipated Music@Menlo debut, performing an afternoon of masterworks from the string quartet repertoire. The program opened with the captivating Rider Quartet

Music@Menlo 2015 in Numbers 2015 AUDIENCE AND COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION • Music@Menlo’s total audience numbers surpassed 11,600, including 4,670 audience members for paid festival events, more than 5,200 attendees at free concerts and educational events, 861 audience members for the Winter Series, and 931 Menlo School Winter Residency participants and attendees.

• Chamber Music Institute students numbered 42, including 11 International Program artists and 31 Young Performers Program participants.

• Twenty-two college students and recent college graduates were trained in the rigors of festival production and arts administration through the 2015 Arts Management Internship Program.

• Annual Fund donor participation increased from 462 in 2014 to 478 in 2015; 30 percent of 2015 donors were first-time or rejoining contributors.

• In 2015, 27 percent of ticket-buying households were first-time ticket buyers, a total of 216 households.

Music@Menlo’s Future Through its unfaltering commitment to excellence over the past thirteen years—in education and programming, engagement and relationship building, and innovation—Music@Menlo looks towards a strong and sustainable future of thematic and inspiring programming, education of both musicians and listeners, and mission-driven support of chamber music and musicians. On the occasion of the tenth year, in 2012, Music@Menlo invited its community to celebrate its innovations and its impact on the chamber music industry, its artists, and its audiences.

At that time, Music@Menlo successfully completed its TenthAnniversary Campaign, which provided the Music@Menlo Fund with over $3 million in additional contributions from the Music@ Menlo community. This fund has lifted and will continue to lift the organization to the next level of excellence in all areas: artistic programming and performance, the education of Chamber Music Institute participants, audience engagement, and Music@Menlo’s expanding impact on the classical music industry.

Through annual fundraising and special initiatives to replenish and grow the Music@Menlo Fund, Music@Menlo will continue to operate with an eye on the future, keeping the mission central to all activities, while upholding a sustainable organizational model for years to come.

Music@Menlo over the Years • 350 Chamber Music Institute participants have been immersed in a rigorous exploration of chamber music under the tutelage of the Institute’s esteemed artist-faculty.

• Over 200 artists have come to Music@Menlo from all over the world to perform in the main-stage concerts, give multimedia Encounter lectures, coach in the Chamber Music Institute, and work with Menlo School students in the annual Winter Residency.

• 233 interns have gained real-world experience from the industryleading Arts Management Internship Program.

• 78 CDs have been released on the Music@Menlo LIVE label.

• The annual operating budget has increased from $445,600 in 2003 to $2.1 million in 2015.

• The festival produces 56 public events each year, reaching over 11,600 students, musicians, and audience members, with total free program attendance exceeding 5,200 annually.

Chamber Music Institute Alumni Updates (September 2015) Five International Program alumni returned to Music@Menlo for the Winter Residency to work with Menlo School teachers and students in a week of interactive, cross-disciplinary music education: • Rebecca Anderson (violin, International Program ’14) • Miki-Sophia Cloud (violin, International Program ’11) • Jeonghyoun Christine Lee (cello, International Program ’14) • Anna Petrova (piano, International Program ’14) • Cong Wu (viola, International Program ’14) Cellist Mari Nagahara (Young Performers Program ’15) and the members of her piano trio (Trio Adonais) won the second place medal and a scholarship of $1,800 in the Junior Division of the 2015 Fischoff Competition, held in Notre Dame, Indiana, in May 2015.

The trio studies at the New England Conservatory Prep School in Boston, Massachusetts.

Pianist Michael Mizrahi (International Program ’06) has been named one of five international recipients of the S&R Foundation’s 2014 Washington Award. Presented annually by the Washington, D.C.– based foundation, the Washington Award recognizes individuals who display outstanding ability and artistic excellence. It supports those who contribute to an international cultural dialogue.

Rachel Naomi Kudo (International Program ’12) won Second Prize at the Ninth National Chopin Piano Competition, which took place in Miami, Florida, in February 2015. As Second Prize winner, Kudo won a cash award of $35,000 and automatic acceptance into the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw, Poland, in October 2015.

Violist Cong Wu (International Program ’14) was the guest artist at the National Arts Centre Orchestra Young Artists Program in Ottawa, Ontario, during the summer of 2015. Working alongside Artistic Directors Pinchas Zukerman and Patinka Kopec, he taught the talented pre-college-level violists in the program.

MUSIC@MENLO Cellist Christopher Nunnally (International Program ’03) performed at the Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival in October 2014 on the festival’s Next Generation series. Nunnally is currently the Director of Orchestras at Rose High School and the Oakwood School in Greenville, North Carolina. He completed his bachelor of music degree at East Carolina University in 2002 under the tutelage of Kelley Mikkelsen and his juris doctor degree at New York Law School in 2008.

Cellist Atticus Mellor-Goldman (Young Performers Program ’14 and ’15) and the members of his string quartet (Incendium Quartet) won a first place medal and a scholarship of $2,300 in the Junior Division of the 2015 Fischoff Competition, held in Notre Dame, Indiana, in May 2015. The quartet studies at the Colburn School and also at the Pasadena Conservatory in Southern California.

Violinist Yue Qian (Young Performers Program ’13) and violist Hayaka Komatsu (Young Performers Program ’11 and ’12) both garnered top prizes at the 2015 American String Teachers Association National Solo Competition.

Violinist Tee Khoon Tang (International Program ’04) has created her own mini-festival in Singapore that took place in May 2015, entitled “Transcending the Ordinary: The Late Works of Schubert.”

The festival featured Music@Menlo alumna cellist Olivia Jeremias (International Program ’04).

Musical America named violinist Francesca dePasquale (International Program ’13) its New Artist of the Month in February 2014.

Two Institute alumni—Stephen Waarts (Young Performers Program ’06–’09) and Kenneth Renshaw (Young Performers Program ’07 and ’08)—were selected as finalists of the 2015 Queen Elisabeth International Violin Competition.

Pianist Alex Chien (Young Performers Program ’12 and ’13) and violinist Robert Chien (Young Performers Program ’13) were featured in the 2014 Festival del Sole season highlights video.

Violinist Yaegy Park (Young Performers Program ’13) won the gold medal at the Fortieth Annual Stulberg International String Competition in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Three Music@Menlo alumni, pianist Michael Brown (International Program ’10), violinist Kristin Lee (International Program ’09), and violist Matthew Lipman (International Program ’11) were recipients of the 2015 Avery Fisher Grant.

Intern Updates (September 2015)

After completing her master’s degree in arts administration at Boston University in 2014, Erica Leung (Development Intern ’11) worked with Boston Lyric Opera as Audience Services Manager and is now Manager of Annual Giving at Celebrity Series of Boston.

Sarah Donahue (Patron Services Intern ’11; Operations Intern ’12) is currently living in Cincinnati, Ohio, and is working with the Cincinnati Symphony and Pops Orchestra as Production Coordinator.

Ellen Milligan (Publications & Publicity Intern ’13; Artist Liaison ’15) graduated from Ohio State University in May 2015 and is teaching English in Toulouse, France, for seven months.

Sofie Dunderdale (Student Liaison Intern ’13) joined the staff at SRI International in Menlo Park as Market Analyst in March of 2015.

After four years on staff with Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Serena Robbins (Artist Liaison Intern ’09) is now Marketing Manager for the 92nd Street Y in New York City.

Lauren Eigenbrode (Student Liaison Intern ’06) is currently Admissions and Alumni Relations Manager at the Crowden Music Center in Berkeley. She previously worked at the San Francisco Symphony as Corporate Partnerships Coordinator.

In May 2015, Andrew Goldstein (Operations Intern ’11) and violinist Kristin Lee (International Program ’09) cofounded Emerald City Music, a yearround chamber music series based in Seattle and Olympia, Washington.

Following Music@Menlo’s innovative approach to concert programming, they will offer seven thematic concerts beginning in fall 2016.

Zachary Green (Patron Services Intern ’09 and ’10) recently finished his master’s degree at the Juilliard School and has since joined the Hyogo Performing Arts Center Orchestra in Japan. As a member of its double bass section, he maintains a busy schedule of over one hundred performances per season.

Leslie Irwin (Publications & Publicity Intern ’14) graduated from Loyola Marymount University in May 2015 and was recently hired as Communications Manager at Smuin Ballet in San Francisco.

Jiwon Kang (Student Liaison Intern ’09; Operations Intern ’10) is currently Coordinator of the Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program at Washington National Opera. She completed her internship at the DeVos Institute of Arts Management at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and returned to Music@Menlo on her vacation this summer to serve as Resident Advisor for the Chamber Music Institute’s Young Performers Program.

Andrew Stein-Zeller (Production Intern ’13; Operations Intern ’14) is Publicity Associate for DOTDOTDOTMUSIC, a leading public relations agency serving artists and organizations in the vibrant new classical music scene.

Reflecting on his Music@Menlo experience, Stein-Zeller writes: “Two consecutive internships at Music@Menlo served as the foundation for my career path as a contemporary classical music publicist. The festival environment pushed me to develop my skills in organization, time management, communications, teamwork, and creative problem solving; all of these skills have allowed me to succeed, thrive, and advance in the classical music industry, and I’m very happy to have spent my formative years with the M@M family!”

Andrew Tripp (Recording Intern ’12) is currently Assistant Director of Conservatory Audio Services at Oberlin College, a position he began in January of this year.

After completing her undergraduate studies in music theory and composition at Boston University, composer Yuekun Mo Zhao (Production Intern ’14) is now based in London, where she has begun her graduate studies at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.

Nina Zhou (Development Intern ’13) was recently hired as the Executive Assistant to the Director of Development at the San Francisco Symphony.
